Update Application Versions in Profile Manager
When using Profile Manager I have noticed the version must match on an application both on the Server and the Client when using the Restrictions Payloads setting. We utilize the Restrictions Payload in PM to control what Applications users can open in a lab enviroment. As an example we recently updated Office on the clients to 14.3.5 so I updated the server to 14.3.5 also. However the PM still sees all of the Office Apps as 14.3.0 which prevents the application from launching on the client. Similarly when I have installed a new application, like Trend Micro, the new Application does not show up in the list of Apps.
My question is this, how do you re-sync, force scan or update PM with the latest applications and versions? I have rebooted and recycled the service without success.
Thanks for any help in advance.

Looking at the code for the /mydevices page, it appears that Server 4.0 supports all the same devices as Server 3.2.2:
OSX (10.7 and later):
if (majorVersion >= 10 && minorVersion >= 7) {
osIsValid = true;
iOS (iOS 4.1 and later):
if (osVersion >= 4.1) {
osIsValid = true;

Suggestion. Application for Ringtone Profile Manag...
One of the functions that I used to use a lot on Nokia N8 Belle is the Ringtone Profile Manager. The possibility to create different profiles and scheduled them to change at a certain time of the day.
For example, I´ve created a Sleep profile with no sounds, notifications, also that puts the phone on Battery Saver mode (using Situations app) that I activated when I was going to sleep, and scheduled to end and change back to normal at 7:15 AM, just before the time I´ve set the alarm to wake up.
It was a very usefull function. You need to understand Symbian is dead and buries and Windows Phone is not Symbian. Sure it had it's perks and had some nice/great features. It was also a pita to maintain and update. It died for good reason.
There will always be stuff in old hardware and software we like. It is what it is and times change. Apps are here to enhance what we do with our phone on a day to day basis. much can now be done using the new API and it will be far more productive to converse wih app developers who work on/have apps that approach what we like. Much of what you and other seem to want would be completely irrelevant to others and this is where the apps come in.

Start update info command without profile manager
Hi all,
i've configured profile manager2 over mountain lion 10.8 to enroll about 200 ipad all around the world.
My question is:
is there a way, for example, to initiate an update info to a single device or multiple devices, from command line terminal not using profile manager?
In this way i could schedule some query to update automatically the informations about the devices enrolled.
thanks
alessandroPresuming the user has taken the iPad off site
You need to make sure the ports profile manager requires are accessible for ios devices outside of your LAN
and your mdm server name is resolvable outside of your LAN
The device you're tying to push to also has to be online, if the iPad has no network access you won't be able to push anything to it . If it's an iPad with cellular data that's not so much of a problem. if it's not and the user hasn't or can't connect it to wireless, you won't be able to push anything until they do
If your pushing an app out, the user also needs to accept the installation
If the iPad is still onsite they may have also deleted wifi profile and are unable to connect to the wireless
Easiest thing to do is get it back and see what they have done -
What Mac OS X versions does Profile Manager support in Server 4?
I remember that Mavericks server dropped support for lion clients in profile manager when 3.0 came out, and before we decide if we are upgrading to Server 4 and Yosemite, I was wondering if anyone knew what OS's are supported by Profile Manager in Yosemite Server. Thanks!

Mac Mini Profile Manager installing/updating ipad Apps - HELP!
Hi,
i am hoping someone might be able to help with the following.
we have a mac mini server to remote manage 25 ipads using profile manager.
this works well as we can lock, wipe and clear passcodes etc.and attach the policies without any trouble.
However we are trying to push out an app (version 1.4) to the devices and this is sort of working but not fully.
if the app is already installed with version 1.3 it doesnt update even though in profile manager, 'active tasks' it says successful.
if you go go into profile manager and select the device and select 'update info' this registers against the device but still shows as the old version.
if we delete the app from our test ipad and push it out via profile manager it goes in active tasks as successful then the ipad has a pop up message box saying the xxxxxx.ourdomain.co.uk would like to install the app, once this has been ok'd it installs on the ipad ok, but when you select the app it tries to open then goes back to the screen again and never opens the app.
if you download the app direct from itunes it opens with out any trouble.
here is the process i am using.
on the mac mini server.
download the app via itunes
then in apps i drag the app on to the desktop, this creates the .ipa file
in profile manager, select the device, edit apps and browse to the .ipa and upload
select the uploaded app and 'add'
when you save this, then go to active tasks it gets pushed out to the device and reports as successful
then the app either doesnt update if old version is installed or installs if no app is installed but doesnt open
any help welcome
regards
GavinGavin,
We've run into the same issue that you mentioned. My understanding of the Push App functionality of Profile Manager is this:
Pushing apps is designed to be used to deliver In-House developed apps over the air (OTA). Meaning, if your organization develops an app for use on its own devices, you can upload the .ipa to Profile Manager and push it out while bypassing any App Store interaction. The In-House .ipa would contain its own provisioning profile that would dictate who is allowed to run it.
When you download an app from the App Store, the .ipa that you get actually contains the AppleID that was used to purchase/download the app in the .plist. If you then push that app to a device that has never been used with that AppleID, the app will fail to launch as it cannot verify that you actually own the app.
Before we go any further: what I'm about to discuss isn't officially condoned or supported by Apple, which means it is inheritly risky and could be patched over at any time.
In order to bypass the issue, what has worked for us is to sign into the App Store on each iPad with the AppleID that is used to purchase the apps on your Mac Mini. You need to download at least one app to the iPad while logged in with that AppleID in order for the iPad to retain the AppleID after the iPad users log in again with their personal AppleID. After you have done that, users may once again log in with their own AppleID.
At this point, you can push an app to any of those devices that have been paired with your Mac Mini's AppleID at least once. The apps won't (immediately) crash.
Here's the catch: I'm told that the .ipa contains an "expiration date" of sorts. Once that date has elapsed, your iPad will attempt to extend the expiration date by connecting to the App Store to verify that the same AppleID that was used to download the app in the first place is still active on the device. If it is not, the app may once again crash when you attempt to run it. Now, this expiration date or timer is not disclosed, meaning, if this is really the case, you will have no idea when the apps will stop working. It could be weeks, or months, or years. A gamble, really. So, use that at your own risk.
Currently, there is no official method for pushing App Store apps Over-the-air with Profile Manager or any other Mobile Device Management platform.
Remember!: If you are even considering pushing apps in the manner mentioned above, you will still need to account for licensing. As an organization, you must have purchased the same number of copies of an app as you intend to install on your devices. This is a non-issue with free apps, but for auditing purposes, you'd best look into VPP or steer clear of pushing apps altogether.
I hope some of that helped clear up your question.
Good luck! -
Profile Manager crashes with Application
I am having a problem with running and apple script app and was hoping someone may have a suggestion. The app works great and as expected when run by a user. It creates an alias on the user’s desktop and links it to their windows Documents folder that already exists on our network. This part I am very happy with. The code is as follws, then I export it as an application:
mount volume "smb://servername/share/" & (system attribute "USER")
set localMyDocs to quoted form of POSIX path of "/Users/" & (system attribute "USER") & "/Desktop/Documents"
do shell script "ln -sfF " & "'/share/" & (system attribute "USER") & "/folder' " & localMyDocs
Previous experience showed that it is required to add an application to the /application folder on the server so that it will show in the application list in profile manager. This works with word, abobe CS and so on without the need for a full install.
When I add the applescript app to the servers /applications folder the profile manager website crashes when I try to add any applications:
If I remove the application from the server the error goes away and I can add applications again. This is a bit of a head scratcher, has anyone got any ideas?

10.8.4 running Server and Profile Manager.
I have a simple applescript that launches a bash script. In WGM I used to have it launch on login. Now on PM I have learned I need to put it in the server's /Applications folder.
When I try to access applications while using PM from the server, I get the same error as you. If I use a web browser on my Mac there is no error but the box stays empty (saying 'Loading Applications') with no apps in it.
Similar errors as yours show in the server's Console in either case. Ruby is crashing.
Will go looking for a script to look at...

Profile Manager no longer works properly after update to FF 29.
I am a developer and I previously used the profile manager to manage 3 instances of Firefox. I had one open for Development, 1 for testing and 1 for production. Each was color coded by a theme for easy discernment of which instance I was in.
After the update to 29, the profile manager no longer seems to work properly. The theme from one profile proliferates to all the profiles and it is now very difficult to tell what instance I am in.I found that after Firefox v29, a LOT of my settings and<BR>
add-ons were changed / reset. Try this;
'''''[https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/troubleshoot-firefox-issues-using-safe-mode Start Firefox in Safe Mode]'''''
<BR>While you are in safe mode;<BR>
'''''Firefox Options > Advanced > General'''''.<BR>
Look for and turn off '''Use Hardware Acceleration'''.<BR>
Then check ALL of your settings. Browser and add-ons. Then restart. -
Can configurator/profile manager group apps
Appologies if this post is in the wrong section.
I have been asked to set up profile manager in such a way that the on-site admin can not only wirelessly deploy apps to devices, but also group and re-group those apps together on the devices screen over-the-air. End result should be that end users do not have to wade through a sea of apps just to find one application (users include a large number of very young children, so it has to be easy to direct them to specific apps).
Now I'm aware that this could be achieved by making a back-up of a pre-configured device, however, this doesn't work well in terms of maintaining the iPads configuration since any new apps added would fall outside of the grouping and the devices would need to be returned to the server room to get their configurations updated with a new backup image and would defeat the purpose of using Profile Manager. I have attempted to convince the on-site admin that they should assign the devices to gropus in profile manager so that Group A only get the apps they use, Group B only get the apps they use, and so on the really isn't keen on the idea because there would still be way too many apps (we're talking 50 or so per device) to wade through just to find the one the class will use.
Is this possible or will it at some point in the future be possible? The advances made by this new version of profile manager and the VPP store is fantastic, but it'd be nice if this feature could be added at some point in future.
Kindly
StomIf I remember it correctly the user (Apple ID) get a 30 days grace period during which they can migrate data from the app and continue use it. When that period ends they get the opportunity to buy the app for themselves and continue using it for their own money.

Errors deploying Enterprise iOS app through Profile Manager
We manage about 35 iPads through Profile Manager, including deploying a custom made app.
We first deployed this app in July and had no problems with it. Our third party developers have released an update for iOS 7 and we are running into problems pushing it out through Profile Manager.
When I try to upload the IPA file through the web interface I get the attached error. Looking at the logs I see the following errors:
Sep 16 14:42:50 mdm.servername.com ProfileManager[210] <Info>: Unable to find icon file for '/var/devicemgr/ServiceData/Data/tmp/temp_extracted_folder_for_data_file_30/Pay load/Hope.app/Icon-72.png'
Sep 16 14:42:50 mdm.servername.com ProfileManager[210] <Info>: Unable to find icon file for '/var/devicemgr/ServiceData/Data/tmp/temp_extracted_folder_for_data_file_30/Pay load/Hope.app/Icon.png'
This is the first time we've tried to update our custom app. In trying to narrow down whether it was a problem with Profile Manager or the app I uploaded an older version of Apple's Podcast app, and pushed it out to a test iPad, then uploaded the current version through Profile Manager and pushed it out to the iPads with no problems.
Our developers say that nothing has changed from the original version to the new version.
Any ideas? We could solve this by opening the firewall for some ports (443, 1640, 2195, 2196, 5223, ) and ip addresses (17.0.0.0/8). Have a look at

How to rename registered devices on Profile Manager
When we use the Profile Manager for our iPad control, we can not select the each iPad to rename them . Is there any way we can rename the devices in Server side? Would you advise us how we can configure in Server side for allowing to rename them?
We use OS X:10.9.5/iOS:8.1/Server:3.2.2You can only rename supervised devices with the profile manager.
All other devices will not show the Rename option at the Devices section.
The users can rename the devices and the new name will be shown after executing "Update Info" at the profile manager. I don't know any other way, with the exception of using the Apple Configurator. -
How to configure profile manager in Maverics when DNS is externally managed?
Are there any guides to configuring Profile Manager as a MDM?
Here is my story.
Recently installed Mac mini at a school where the DNS is externally managed by the Education departments IT group. Upgraded to Maverics and installed Server app. Configured profile manager to the point where we could generate a trust profile and enrolment profile. Doesn't work because there is no DNS entry for Mac mini server. Create entry but need to change host name and computer name and local machine name to match entry. Suddenly profile manager not working at all. Delete server app and it's configuration file in ~/Library/. Reinstall. Now Profile manager won't even activate. Speak to Apple on phone, run various commands to reinitialise Open Directory and reset profile manager. To no avail. Apple say to reinstall Mavericks, Server and try again.
Funny thing is I got profile manager to work as an MDM in a test environment, but changing DNS after doing so much configuration seems to have made a real mess of things. Vowing to make a time machine backup as soon as Mavericks re-installs.
Anyone know of any guides other than the one on krypted.com, which appears to be for the previous version of Profile Manager.
StomIn general, either your OS X Server box has a DNS translation for its address, or it doesn't.
If you don't have valid DNS, you will have problems with various services, as DNS is fundamental to distributed authentication and encryption, among other uses.
OS X Server doesn't recover well from installations that start off with DNS errors, and the wipe and reinstallation suggested by Apple is usually easier than resolving the various issues that tend to arise within the configurations of the various services.
If your server doesn't have a valid DNS translation, then either add the DNS translation into your organization's local DNS environment, or work to retrain or replace the folks that are unwilling or unable to administer and to properly maintain local DNS services, or (far less desirably) configure and start your own parallel DNS services. There are other options, of course.
I'd escalate this discussion to management, and let them sort this out — at its core, this very likely isn't a technical issue. -
Version 26 works fine. When it updates to version 27.01, I get undefined entity. I've tried uninstalling and then reinstalling. I've tried to bring up profile manager but it doesn't come up. I've tried deleting Firefox folders. I'm very disappointed that Firefox rolls out an update that causes problems. None of your recommendations is working and I really hate to lose Firefox but this is pathetic. I'm using version 26 as much as i can till someone gives me the right solution. Is there a simple link to click on that will clear up any old profiles and simply fix this issue?
That means you need to clean reinstall.
Certain Firefox problems can be solved by performing a ''Clean reinstall''. This means you remove Firefox program files and then reinstall Firefox. Please follow these steps:
'''Note:''' You might want to print these steps or view them in another browser.
#Download the latest Desktop version of Firefox from http://www.mozilla.org and save the setup file to your computer.
#After the download finishes, close all Firefox windows (click Exit from the Firefox or File menu).
#Delete the Firefox installation folder, which is located in one of these locations, by default:
#*'''Windows:'''
#**C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox
#**C:\Program Files (x86)\Mozilla Firefox
#*'''Mac:''' Delete Firefox from the Applications folder.
#*'''Linux:''' If you installed Firefox with the distro-based package manager, you should use the same way to uninstall it - see [[Installing Firefox on Linux]]. If you downloaded and installed the binary package from the [http://www.mozilla.org/firefox#desktop Firefox download page], simply remove the folder ''firefox'' in your home directory.
#Now, go ahead and reinstall Firefox:
##Double-click the downloaded installation file and go through the steps of the installation wizard.
##Once the wizard is finished, choose to directly open Firefox after clicking the Finish button.
More information about reinstalling Firefox can be found [https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/troubleshoot-and-diagnose-firefox-problems?esab=a&s=troubleshooting&r=3&as=s#w_5-reinstall-firefox here].
Please report back to see if this helped you!
Thank you. -
Server 4.0 stuck on "Updating Profile Manager service"
Updated my Mac mini server to Yosemite, bought server 4.0 and installed it.
Then started the update procedure, but the progress bar only goes half, then stuck at "Updating Profile Manager service".
Waited for more than an hour, no progress. Killed the update and tried again, but the same result.
Anyone a solution ?

firefox has been running slower. When this happens I'll reboot my computer and this speeds up firefox. When I restarted the computer firefox would not open. Just the spinning wheel with no access to the tools.
After I force quit - it says ignore or notify/report to apple. I tried sending a report, and it ques up the box with details, system config, etc... but when I click on send - it will not let me send one - I've never been unable to send a report before.
I uninstalled, then reinstalled. Upon opening I get the spinning wheel and nothing happens - I need to force quit. I see on this mozilla help site that I need to update my profile manager. I followed these instructions - Finding your profile without opening Firefox Open Finder and go to your home folder. Note: your home folder is usually the name of your Mac user account From your home folder open /Library/, then /Application Support/, then /Firefox/, then /Profiles/. Your profile folder is within this folder. but when I got to library - application support - there is no firefox listed. You can do a disk check with the chkdsk.exe program.
If you run the chkdsk.exe program from a cmd.exe Command window then you can read the response from the chkdsk.exe program.
Open a cmd.exe window:<br />
Start > Run: cmd.exe <press Enter>
At the command prompt (>) type or Copy&Paste: chkdsk.exe /f /r <press Enter> (put a space before /f and /r)
If you get something like: Would you like to schedule this volume to be checked the next time the system restarts? y/n then answer the question with "Y" and close all programs and reboot the computer.
A possible cause is security software (firewall) that blocks or restricts Firefox without informing you about that, possibly after detecting changes (update) to the Firefox program.
Remove all rules for Firefox from the permissions list in the firewall and let your firewall ask again for permission to get full unrestricted access to internet for Firefox and the plugin-container process.

Why is the Profile Manager web portal inaccessible after update to 3.2.1 ?
We run the Profile Manager in OS X as an MDM. We also use the Device Enrollment Program.
After updating to 3.2.1, the web portal for Profile Manager became inaccessible, and DEP checkbox in Profile Manager became unchecked.
I've attempted to re-enroll in the DEP, but it always rejects the Token I give.
I don't know if the two problems are related or not.
Does anyone have a solution?
This is the log from the Profile Manager Service Log when I attempt to log in to the Profile Manager portal.
