XFA pdf filesize grows...

Hi all
I have a pdf containing some small jpgs (18pcs 4-20Kb) and some subforms (29pcs). Forms is contracted at the beginning. Its very dynamic, where i can click a header to expand/hide a product view in child subform.
The size of the is very big:
PCordning_form_V3_9.xdp = 378 kb
PCordning_form_V3_9.pdf = 676 kb
when i fill out the pdf and save, I show 2 product subforms with small jpgs, the size grows to 1.544 kb. I do not embed fonts or images, so I think it is strange!!!
- Anyone know why it grows so much??
- Any tricks to make it grow less??
- Why isn't the pdf format more efficient. I know its xml based, but normally the xdp design is (almost) allways bigger than the saved dynamic pdf, so I am a little puzzled.. ideas are very welcome ;)

Actually I recommend validating the level of the graphics necessary as the first step to reduce your output file size, that is usually the problem and the place to look first and the smartest solution since you pay a heavy price for over jealous attributes of graphics. As far as the PDF output compression option, I believe it is under the PDF print type group of options but I am sure there is documentation on the PDF print options available either in Documaker Studio help and/or in online documentation.

  • Javascript error when launching XFA pdf from browser

    Hi all,
I am trying to use my XFA PDF from a browser. On my local system I have  set up a web server and am launching my PDF from there. However, I am getting a ReferenceError with regards to one of my Javascript functions.
My PDF has dependency on a javascript file that resides in the Acrobat path as follows:
    C:\Program Files\Adobe\Acrobat 9.0\Acrobat\Javascripts\
When I use my PDF directly from an Acrobat instance, everything works fine. The issue comes up only when launching from server. How do I link the javascript file to my PDF?
Edit: The user is going to be launching the PDF from the server via a web browser. In such a case where do I place the javascripts?
    Help appreciated,
    Thanks

@George: thanks for the quick response!
My JS code contains a readFileIntoStream which I learnt is also to be run under privileged context. (still learning the ropes here.. ).  I have been trying to incorporate the JS code directly into the PDF to get around this privileged context..  but I am unable to find a non-privileged equivalent for readFileIntoStream..
Basically my users would be accessing the PDF from the server direct via the browser. For my testing purposes I am able to run the PDF directly from my desktop via an Acrobat instance without any hitch as the scripts are folder level like you mentioned. Is it possible for the users to be able to access the javascripts from anywhere on the server rather than directly from the PDF?  Please note, users will not be saving copies of the PDF on to their local machines (in which case we could have pushed the JS file along to their machines) . I need to ultimately run the PDF from browser.
    I hope I am clear..
    Thanks.

  • How to print non XFA pdf from LC

    Hi,
I am aware that this is not neccessary a LC Output question, but could not find a better place for it
I cannot find a service in LC ES2 that can print a normal (non XFA) pdf to a printer – can this be true?? If it is an XFA form, we can use the generatePrintedOutput and create PCL or PS depending on the target printer. But how would you do it with a flat pdf with watermark or a word document converted to pdf on LC??
Must be alot of clever people having solved this issue outthere, bring it on
    Thanks,
    Thomas Groenbaek
    Jyske Bank, Denmark

I know, but I do not want to send the pdf directly - want to convert it to ps or pcl.
If the pdf is a XFA i can use the generatePrintedOutput and works fine. But in this case it is a "flat"/non xfa and I want LC to be able to convert it to a printer language format to print it. How is this done in the best way?
I see a toPS from convertToPdf service, is that handy?
    Is xdc files the way?
good input and best practices is appreciated
    Thanks,

  • Generated PDF Filesize Concerns

    Hello,
I have am creating PDFs by generated XDP files from ColdFusion. Each PDF could have different sections that would appear or not based on the XML data passed in with the XDP file. I am concerned that having all of the sections in one file may bloat the generated PDF filesize? Is this true or is the PDF filesize only dependent upon the information that is actually displayed when it is generated (rather than both the displayed and hidden design elements)?
Are there any resources that folks have found useful for PDF file size optimization techniques?
    Thanks.

    Hi Sergiusz,
Thank you for your reply. I look at what you wrote and try to make some test...
    1) For first I download FontForge, which can generate type1 font from true type. So I open FontForge and open my Arial.ttf font and use "Generate Fonts" to save my Arial.ttf font to pfb and pfm (whoch are need to set in uifont.ali). I have to change encoding, because my font has 2byte encoding so I reecondode the font from ISO10646-1 to ISO8859-2 and generate to pfb.
    2) Then I navigate REPORTS_PATH from regedit to my *.pfm and *.pfb files.
    3) I add these lines to end of my uifont.ali
    [ PDF:Embed ]
    Arial = "Arial.pfm Arial.pfb"
    ArialNarrow = "ArialNarrow.pfm ArialNarrow.pfb"
    4) Then I generate my report but nothing change... I check "Font used" in my pdf file, but there were not my fonts embedded I guess..
I also try PDF:Subset, but it doesnt change anything... I try PDF aliasing to see if my uifont is working - this work very well, but I dont need to change font...
Any other advice? Thank you so much to everyone!

  • How to process (populate & merge) XFA PDF Forms using Adobe library in Java

We have the XFA Forms (.pdf) created in Adobe LiveCycle designer 8.2 ES. We have the following requirement :
    1. We need to populate data in those forms using standalone Java programs.
    2. We need to merge the populated forms and create a single PDF out of these forms, using standalone Java programs.
Can both of these be done using Adobe PDF Library or Acrobat SDK?
What is the difference between Adobe PDF Library or Acrobat SDK?
We already have the licensed version of Adobe Acrobat Professional 9 with LiveCycle Designer 8.2 ES. Where can I get the relevant Adobe Java APIs from?
Can someone provide some sample code that could be used for the above requirements?
Please provide your inputs on these. We have been using IText, but facing some limitations in that recently.

The answer looks quite clear, and the conclusion is essentially simple: Don't use LiveCycle Designer.
Keep in mind that LiveCycle Designer originated as design tool for the according servers (that's way back in JetForms's days). For reasons I still can follow, Adobe decided to thow this design tool after any Acrobat Pro for Windows buyer. And the forms industry is now suffering from the mess that created.
Also, keep in mind that the term "Server" is used here as "service providing application".
Rants aside, was there a specific feature making you chose XFA (aka LiveCycle Designer)? Knowing these reasons can help us finding suitable workarounds.

  • Signature in XFA PDF

I need the help with signing Shell PDF.
I have the XFA Form  and XML Data.
XFA Form we have given from Czech goverment. We can't change it.
In template of XFA Form is the signature widget, that generates PDF signature, and any javascripts for checking values.
I used "FormsServiceClient.renderPDFForm" for generate PDF with data.
Next I tried to sign by "SignatureServiceClient.sign" and response from ES2 is:
ALC-DSS-300-008 The operation sign is not supported for Shell PDFs. A Shell PDF is a special type of static or dynamic XFA Form PDF, which contains XFA streams that are not in synchronization with the rendering available in the PDF version. See Signatures Service Documentation for more details. (in the operation : validateSignInputs)
Than I tried to convert to non-interactive PDF by "OutputClient.generatePDFOutput2".  Result PDF I can sign, but I CAN'T export data from PDF.
How can I to solve this problem?
    Thx Petr

  • Batch shrinking of pdf filesize for a lot of files

I have several million pdf files, each about 1MB in size, and need to compress them to save disk space and shorten the download time when viewed through the web.
I've tried many different third party products to compress/shrink/resize them in a batch job without changing the looks (just lowering the visible quality), but most products only reduce the filesize about 15-25% and the few that actually could compress 70-90% took a "long" time for each file (even just a few seconds for each file makes a process time of approximately a year in total running on a normal PC).
Removing all the embedded fonts changes the size from 1MB to about 60kB, but I need the compressed files to look similar to the original files (a certain degree of visual quality degradation is accetable though).
When studying the Adobe SDK it seems like there are methods that could be of use to me, but that they are only accessible through adobe plugin functionality and not externally available using the API.
After searching both these forums and on google I've realized the issue with compression and font embedding isn't a trivial problem, and therefore need some help understanding all this. Any help, code snippets or ideas is greatly appreciated.

There is a script called PDF Processor you can try.
The last one listed is the one you want (most up to date)
    http://ps-scripts.com/bb/viewtopic.php?f=10&t=1882&sid=4756172e6aed44b1195bbee6ce4b9367
Put the script in your photoshop>presets>scripts folder and the script should then
    be under File>Scripts>Pdf Processor.

  • Huge PDF filesizes

When creating the same PDF from indesign CS4 on two different Macs with the same spec, same version of ID and same PDF job options I get vastly different filesizes (one could be under a mb on one mac but in excess of 7mb on the other. Anyone know why this could be happening.
    keith

    Hi,
Thanks for the replies. I've checked the export options etc.
After looking further it would seem that one mac produces the pdf with a massive amount of raw data in the xmp (you can see this in the file info) but the other mac doesn't.
Does anyone know a) why one would embedd some much data but the other wouldn't and b) if there an option somewhere to enable me to choose whether the raw data is embedded in xmp or not?

  • Saving a PDF - Filesize Massive

    Hi,
Whenever I save a file as a PDF using the "Save As PDF" on the print dialog box the resulting PDF file is massive. For example I have a 49kb Word docx document that when saved as a PDF is 8.4Mb, however if I pass it to a college to save as a pdf from Word on a Windows PC the resulting PDF is only 484kb. This seems to happen with any document I save a PDF using the built in PDF generator.
Anyone got any ideas of how to "fix" this issue.
    Kind regards,
    Andrew.

While the document may be OK, the process appears to be somewhat flawed.
And I was wondering if you could use a different app to convert the document,
and see if it will make a .PDF in less capacity than this enormous file monster.
Also, I'm curious if any system maintenance could help the OS X system do
the correct thing and make a reasonably smaller file .PDF from the Word doc.
As well it should. With older OS X versions, there has been no such problem.
(I've had most OS X systems from 10.0 beta to 10.5.8; and OS 6.0 to 9.2.2.)
Since the creation of .PDFs and the viewing of them is an internal OS X function,
there should be a chance that the usual and someone curious steps performing
ritualistic maintenance on the system may help it render .PDFs correctly.
Since you appear to be running Snow Leopard 10.6 (you posted here) it may
be a matter of finding the which questionable file(s) may be responsible for
the .PDF and discover the correct means of making the OS create a new plist
for that integrated system app's function. Preview displays PDFs, but the
element of their creation appears corrupted, so there's a fault in that part of it.
However, since it's about 3:14AM and I should not be keyboarding asleep,
I will leave now and hope someone knows how to troubleshoot the exact
item causing this pain, and can better explain it here...
    Good luck & happy computing!

  • How to get my .pdf filesize down (I have tried many things!)

Hi everyone. After about an hour and a half of thoroughly searching the web, seeing others suggestions that don't work for me, or trying online resizers, I am now officially pissed off, especially since I consider myself a somewhat computer savvy person.
Ok...So I am trying to upload a transcript of mine onto an application website for a job. The transcript file size is 242 KB. For some reason, the max upload file size on the website is 200 KB, which is ridiculous I think but it's what I have to work with. There are 4 pages in the .pdf file. I can do without one or two of the pages, but I have tried everything. There is no option under Document...extract pages or whatever it was. I tried "printing" it using a document writer and saving only a couple of the pages but then the quality comes out horrible.I have tried "print screen" then saving it in paint and all that but that doesn't work well either. Now I turn here for help cause I feel I am about to break something!
How can I get this file size down?!? Any help would be greatly appreciated.
I am using windows 7 64 bit and Adobe X reader.
    Thanks,
    David

    Hi,
You may try to download: www.pdfsam.org
Spite and merge pdf files. It's free and open source. Good luck.

  • XFA Pdf form call secure webservice without prompt for password

    Hi,
We are using XFA forms within the company. We have created many (400+) interactive forms with fields to fill manually.
Now the business would like to lookup account details. They want user to be able to enter account number and then lookup details through webservice.
The webservice is created on HOST/CICS and in COBOL. We need security on HTTPS and we cannot accept that the user is prompted for password.
Our security department state that normal practice is to use KERBEROS token that gets authenticated later - is that possible with Adobe Reader??
Have anyone developed this functionality within XFA forms and Adobe Reader?
    Thanks in advance,
    Thomas Groenbaek

Reader can make Web Service calls but the form must be Reader Extended by LiveCycle Server to allow this. It does support secure web service calls but it does uid/pwsd or certificate authentication. Note that the web service can only return simple types. Objects cannot be returned.

  • Exporting XFA PDF from within Portfolio

    Hi,
I have a series of XFA forms (designed in LC DS ES) which are then grouped in an Acrobat Portfolio (Acrobat 9 Pro Ext).
I want to have the ability to "export" any one form from the portfolio by the user clicking a button.
While Acrobat has a menu item to "Save File from Portfolio", I do not want to use this as I want to lock fields after the form has been saved out of the portfolio.
I have tried exportDataObject, but without success. Also tried getting the form open in a new window, but no joy!
In summary, I want to script a button that when the user clicks it, will open that particular form in a new window; lock certain fields and then save the form outside of the portfolio (leaving the original form intact and unaltered).
    Any ideas?
    Thanks,
    Niall

Ok I have figured out what is going on. In a later version there is a list of acceptable execMenuItems that can be used. If the menu command is not on the list then it cannot be used (for security reasons). So our idea of getting the attachment out via this method will not work. I do not see a way to do this until they expose Portfolio commands in the Javascript world. This also explains why some of your commands worked and some did not. Here is the sanctioned list of MenuItems:

  • The pdf filesize is different on another Mac

I saved a pdf from Illustrator on one Mac and the pdf was7.9 Mb
The same file on another Mac in the studio created a Pdf that is 2.5 Mb. Why the difference?
The identical "user created" Acrobat settings are being used. All systems are Mavericks.
    Acrobat XI.

figured it out. Didn't have the instruments downloaded on the other machine....
    doh.

  • Placed jpgs - pdf much bigger then jpgs filesize - why !?

    Hi,
i can't understand what exactly indesign doing, hopefully someone got an idea..
    thanks in advance..
I placed a few jpgs, which are overall about 1.4 mb. The final Pdf, which only includes these jpgs is much bigger, 3.3 mb. I tried different export settings (best quality, smallest filesize, played with image compression ..) but the pdfs filesize always was between 2.8 (bad quality..) and 3.9.
In another test i printed the jpgs directly in a pdf file with Adobe PDF Printer directly from Windows Photo Viewer. Filesize was a few percent smaller than the original jpgs, Quality was pretty the same.
Finaly i placed these Pdfs in indesign and export the whole document as Pdf -> 2.3 mb
    whyy ?!

Exported PDF supports a large number of features not supported in distilled PDF and contains information beyond just the text and images you place on the page, like color management information as one example. Some older versions of ID also tend to export overly large PDF, but that has mostly been corrected in CS5 and later. You can try running the PDF Optimizer in Acrobat Pro to reduce size.

  • Export Dynamic XFA form to PDF

    Greetings,
I am a developer on an ASP.Net web application.  I have the need to export a dynamic XFA PDF to a "flat" PDF or image.  With Acrobat Pro I can export the formt to PostScript and then use Distiller to convert back to PDF.  This is essentially what I want to do.  Is there any way to accomplish this without user interaction server-side.  I know LiveCycle is one option but is cost probhitive for this project.
    Thanks
