My 2008 Macbook Pro logic board failed...am I still able to copy that hard drive onto my 2011 Macbook Pro hard drive?
What you can do is to extract the hard drive from your old computer, put it in an enclosure and connect it to your newer computer, so you can restore your data.
It's not too difficult to do it yourself, but if you think you will do something wrong, take it to a store where you can get your data restored -

Please log the session then we can see how it went

Logical drive 1 status = Ready for recovery ml350 g5
Hi,
I have a problem with a HP Proliant ML350 G5, 2 weeks ago the server did shutdown unexpectedly i looked in the ACU and saw that the controller had a battery problem. I replaced the battery but the server keeps once or twice a day shutting down. I made a report from the ACU but i don't know what this all means.
Here is a part of the report, i hope someone can lead me to the right solution,
Thanks in advance.

How to remove a disk from a logical-drive in a 3510
Hello SUN masters,
I have a 3510 with 4 logical drives and 2 global spares. Logical drive 0 (ld0) has 14 disks and i want to assign 2 of those as global spares and leave ld0 with 12 drives. the other logical-drives have just 2 HDD so I won't touch them.
Drives are 78 GB and ld0 is supposed to have 476 GB, so space is enough with 12 HDD to have RAID1.
What is the procedure to remove a disk from a logical drive. when i telnet to the 3510 there is no option to remove a disk from a ld, only to add disks to logical-drives.
when i use sccli to access the 3510, i can't see an option in the menu.
Does anyone know the steps?
I copy below the configuration of this 3510.
Thanks a lot,
OM

- Backup the data.
- Remove the LD.
- Recreate the LD with 12 drives.
- Restore the data.
Although you can add physical drives into a LD, you cannot remove them from a LD, unless you go through a backup/restore. -

any idea?....thanksIf you are using lun mapping to create your partitions, (done by using telnet to the array and then selecting "View and Edit Host Luns") you have to tell the array the maximum numbers of luns you can create. Some systems will only let you create one by default and you can't make any changes to the size of the lun you are trying to present to your host. There is an option when you telnet to the box in the controller area for the maximum number of luns you can create. Luns in this case are partitions.
If you are not trying to partition your logical drive by using lun mapping, I don't know what your problem is.

Dynamic Smart Array B220i RAID Controller keeps loosing Logical Drive after power shutdown.
Hi, I own two HP Microservers Gen8. I added SSD drive on the DVD SATA port in both. I created Raid 0 over the SSD Drive that I can boot from it, but everytime I shutdown the box (power outage), the logical drive is lost. Note that the logical drive is not lost on reboot. Only when the box is is shutdown. Any ideas why is this happening? Here are repro steps: Enter Smart Storage Administrator
Select onDynamic Smart Array B220i RAID CtrollerClick on "Unassigned Drive" Screen shows me:SATA HDD:
- 3TB Port1:Bay1
- 3TB Port2:Bay2 SATA SSD
- 120GB Port5:Bay5 I selected Sata SSD drive in Port5:Bay5I clicked on "Create Array"
On a next screen I select the following:
I selected RAID 0, 256 KiB Stripe Size, 32 Sectors, Maximum Size
I click on "Create Logical Drive" On a next screen:
A message: Logical Drive was successfully created.
I click on Finish
I exit the Smart Storage Manager and reboot the system. The server boots from the Raid0 Array (Sata SSD Drive in Port5:Bay5) -> No problem If I just reboot the server, it boots from the Raid0 Array. - No problemIf I shut down the server (or during Power outage), the Smart Array tells me that there is no logical array during the boot. The boot fails. -> Qualifies for a problem.
Please can you explain why is the logical drive lost after power loss? Why the controller does not remember the setting? Other details:- Dynamic Smart Array B220i RAID Controller (v3.54.0)- When I boot to Smart Storage Administrator after power failure, I can recreate the Raid 0 over the SSD drive and boot again - this a work around the issue. Thank you for your advise.JiriHi QUANT,

Adaptec 2820SA Logical Device Failed
System: WinXP SP2
Supermicro X6DAE-G2
2 x Xeon CPU 3.40 GHz
8 x Western Digital Caviar RE 400GB SATA
Adaptec 2820SA
Bios: b11564
Driver: b11737
Configuration:
4 RAID 0 Arrays (2 disks in each array)
Problem:
Playing Quicktime files causes a "Logical device failed", independent of the file or which array the file is located on.
Fortunately, the the device can be "Forced online" using Adaptec Storage Manager.
I, naively, thought that this would be a problem Adaptec would be concerned with, unfortunately, Adapetc claims that this is a problem with the Quicktime software. But my RAID just crashed...
I would appreciate any work around to this problem.
Windows XPHi ,
Rerun the BDLS again as this took very little time.
When you try to run again it popsup message saying it already exists just delete that and again put the Logical system name and run it will run that time.
May be while scheduling the job you gave for spool I am not sure why is it looking for Printer which is locked.
Thanks. -
I have a 13" Early 2011 Macbook Pro. Last week the hard drive failed (for the second time), and when I took it to the Apple Store I was told it would cost $177 to replace the hard drive and the cables. I intend on going through with this and getting it fixed, however the man I talked to said I should hold on to it a little longer before giving it to them for repair in case I want to recover my data. When I researched how to recover the data, my answers mostly consisted of taking it to a professional to do so. I found a local authorized service provider who said they could do so, however I was told it would cost at least $400 to recover my data (possibly more depending on how much data there is to recover).
I can afford to pay $177 to fix the hard drive. I cannot, however, afford to pay an additional $400+ to get all of my data back. Yes I realize I should have backed my files up onto an external hard drive (I'm not the most computer-savvy person), but honestly, all I really need is my photos. When my hard drive was in the process of failing, I got a flash drive and put a lot of my files onto it so I would at least have some of them when I got my Macbook fixed. At this point, I can't even turn it on, so I am not able to go into iPhoto and get my pictures.
Is there any way I can do this myself? There is no way I can get this done professionally. I would love to be able to all of my data and files back, but if I can just get some that is better than nothing. Any help would be appreciated!obesity wrote:

I did navigate back several days prior to my Mac dying. Still nothing.
Sounds like it may have been excluded, or perhaps damaged.
Just for future reference, it's always a good idea to keep "secondary" backups. See #27 in Time Machine - Frequently Asked Questions for some suggestions. -
Logical drive partition not showing in Mac OS.
Hi all,
I'm rather new to mac OS and am hoping someone could help me out with this problem.
I've a windows partition (C:) running Vista Ultimate. In it, I had created 'logical drive' which contains a FAT32 (D:)and a NTFS (E:)partition. I'm thinking of using this 'D:' drive to share data between vista and Mac OS. However, when I boot up into Mac OS, both d: and e: drives are not showing (c: showing thought). I went into Terminal and use the 'diskutil list' command, it doesn't show me my D: and E: partition.
Can anyone help?
Thanks,
SimonMacDrive7 allows 32-bit Windows to access r/w to HFS+.
There is a Google kit for NTFS.
I had terrible performance and luck with Paragon Software's NTFS for Mac OS X 6.0 ($30) and would not recommend it.
If you are willing to start over, clone your Vista. Maybe WinClone or Norton Ghost.
Reformat your internal drive with Disk Utility after backing up (Apple Disk Utility Restore).
Don't use BootCamp and create Vista NTFS, FAT32 and Mac OS X. Don't install or restore OS X until AFTER you have Vista installed.
BootCamp only allows for a 2nd partition and I'm not a fan of its methods and limitations. -
I'm concerned that my iMac, purchased 5 years ago, is about the crash and I can't back up my files and programs to an external hard drive via Time Machine because the computer freezes after only a couple hundred MB and gets nowhere near the required amount.
How can I save these files and programs if the computer hard drive fails or has to be replaced without the backup being able to be done? I need to do something quickly, but I'm not sure what I can or should be doing.Get an external hard drive, some good ones that I like are the OWC, http://www.macsales.com Mercury Elite Pro drives...they are very good and reasonably priced.
Get the drive, connect via USB or FireWire, then use Disk Utility to format the new drive as Mac OS X Extended (Journaled), and then use Disk Utility to Restore the current drive to the new drive. Restore actually clones the drive so you will have a bootable backup on the external drive.
After you have formatted and named the external drive, click Restore in the main Disk Utility window, drag the name of the old hard drive to the Source box, and drag the name of the new external drive to the Destination box. DU will make an exact clone of the internal drive on the external drive.
That clone will be a complete backup of the operating system and all of your data.
You can test it by restarting the iMac and hold the Option key. That will give you a grey screen showing all bootable drives. Just click the external drive, then click the upward pointing arrow under it and the iMac will boot from that drive. -
Like the title says. My 1 TB drive failed and unfortunately my computer isn't covered on the replacement program even though my hard drive is the one they are claiming to replace. So that is not a solution just to get that out of the way. So I replaced the hard drive. What I am having trouble with is re-installing my OS. I have 10.6. When I load it and restart it just spits it out and I get the question mark folder. What am I doing wrong is there a step I'm missing? I did do a back up to my Time Machine before the crash. Can I plug it into it and reload format? I'm new to this so any help would be appreciated.
Thanks!Well, let's hope that nothing was jiggled out of place when you were installing the new hard drive. Your optical drive may just be out of alignment or the disc you have is "dirty." Get a lint-free cloth and some rubbing alcohol, then clean the disc as thoroughly as you can starting from the center and working outward in a concentric circlular motion. See if that helps. In particular clean the inner portion well.
If this does not help, then you have a problem. You have opened the computer yourself. That action voids all support from Apple. If you take the computer in for service the store may refuse to service the computer. This is not related to your now expired warranty. -
I have a version Adobe pro 7.1, my old computer hard drive failed, tried to install on my Windows 8.1, will not start up get error message? any solutions? It worked perfectly fine on my old computer which was windows 7.0
Hey,
I am sorry but Acrobat 7 is not at all compatible with Windows 8. For this, you will need to upgrade your Adobe Acrobat version.

I am using databases on multiple computers to store test results for a production line. The computers share info from thier databases with each other using dsn's made with the ODBC Windows XP Admin Tool (Control Panel). This works well most of the time but occasionally one of the network drives fails - I have to disconnect and then use ODBC to make a new connection (a new dsn). Why are the network drives failing? Should I use somenthing else that is more reliable? datasocket? Shared Variable? [email protected]
Gary MavSysInc,
When you say that your program fails, are you referring to the same thing as your LabVIEW Application that is reterieving data? If so, what do you mean by it fails? Is there an error message? Does it Crash? What happens when it "fails"?

Macbook Pro Hard Drives Failing
Hi all,
I've been having massing problems with my Macbook Pro 15" 2.53 Ghz laptop. I got one brand new with apple care in December of 2008. The hard drive was the standard 320 Gb @ 5400 RPM.
Within approximately two weeks of operation the computer failed (froze and after a hard shutdown wouldn't boot). It turned out the hard drive failed. Two weeks! So I took it back to Apple and they replaced the hard drive (took them one week so I lost a week of productivity).
One week after receiving the laptop back, the hard drive failed again! This time I believe the OS got corrupted somehow as the symptom was that it would not boot.
So back to Apple and they straight out replaced it with a new one. One week later, guess what? Failure. So back again and they replaced it.
I'm now on my 3rd laptop from Apple and this hard drive is failing. Luckily I was able to back everything up. I downloaded a utility called SMART Utility and it tells me 60 some sectors are bad on this disk.
Is anyone else having issues like this? Its absolutely ridiculous. Currently the computer is working despite the failed sectors and horrible sounds coming from the hard drive but I expect failure soon. I'll be taking this back to Apple and showing them the results of the SMART Utility, but I'm at the end of the rope here.
I've owned multiple Macbook Pros before and absolutely loved them. But now I am so disillusioned by this... To Apple's credit they have had great customer service, but now I'm at the point where I need to be able to rely on my machine.
Has anyone heard anything?I would second Michael's comment. While hard drives do fail, the rate at which yours are failing would appear to be well beyond the statistical average. I would generally think the next level would be a problem with the MacBook itself causing the failures, but from what I can tell from your comment is that they have replaced your MacBook twice (and you're on your third?). So that would seem to rule out a problem with the MacBook itself. You mentioned that you've had other MacBooks before and it doesn't sound like you've had problems with them... so I wouldn't expect that you're doing anything unusual that would cause the problem.
You're either had a remarkable run of bad luck, or there's something going on that's out of the ordinary causing these drives to fail. I would imagine that when stores get machines, they're likely shipped from batches that are manufactured at similar times. If they had a batch of faulty drives from the manufacturer, it's possible a single store could have gotten several of them. That would still not really explain why your initially replaced drive failed as it would likely have come from a totally different batch than what would have been used in manufacturing at the time your notebook was put together. I guess it's always possible that they might put in a drive that that wasn't new.
