10.4.5 killed display?

Since I installed the 10.4.5 update my computer boots into a blank - completely black - screen. I hear the startup chime, the spinning of the hard disk, and all the other sounds I'm accustomed to hearing at startup, but there is no video, just a completely dark screen.
I've tried booting into safe mode, and booting from the Tiger install DVD and from my Disk Warrior CD. Each time I get the same results - startup chime, hard disk and DVD drive sounds, and no pictures.
I've tried resetting PRAM, and I've tried resetting the power management unit, but no luck.
I suppose it is possible that my display, completely coincidentally, decided to fail the day after I installed the 10.4.5 update. (After all, my Powerbook G3 Firewire is now five years old.) But I hadn't noticed any problems with the display, and I have seen (while surfing on my wife's old iBook clamshell) several reports of 10.4.5 giving people odd problems.
So I guess I have two questions:
1. Has anyone else experienced a similar problem with 10.4.5 interfering with built-in displays?
2. Does anyone have diagnoses or suggestions for resolving this problem that I might have overlooked?
I appreciate any advice anybody can offer. (And I can't wait till my MBP arrives....)
Thanks.

I took the machine apart and put it back together. Apparently a cable had become loose inside.

  • My Shuffle kills displaying anything on my monitor when connected

I have faced an insane problem on connecting my Shuffle to PC. When I put my iPod on its dock, the signal on my display disappears, and my display looks like it is turned off, black screen and nothing more (for use it actually remains working). I can do nothing when it happens because I can see no mouse cursor, no iTunes window, no desktop, nothing except the black screen. Sometimes it happens when I connect my iPod, cometimes not. I cannot uderstand what is the reason and will my monitor be affected with iPod connection every next time or not. I am an experienced PC-user and have seen many troubles, but this one shocks me. I cannot understand at all, what is the connection between iPod and my videocard whick sends videosignal to my display via DVI-D interface.
    Could someone help?

argh apple make this whole place confusing i cant make a thread or somethign w/e ok my screen cracked i fell down the stairs and i have been trying to contact apple FOREVER!!!! i am so frustrated someone help crying

  • HELP! Macbook Pro Display won't work!

I have a 15-inch Macbook Pro from Late 2007; it worked fine yesterday, but as of this morning the display will not work! It makes the Chime when you power it up, but no screen display; I know it's on because you can adjust the volume buttons and hear the volume beeps. The screen brightener and dimmer does nothing, as well as the keys brightener and dimmer. The apple help text said to first try restarting it, did it no change-> then unplug it and disconnect battery for 1 minute, did it no change-> reset the PRAM which I did no change, and then if that didn't work to reset the SMC which I did and got no change in my problem.
And now the part that boggles my mind is I have the cables to hook up the MBP to my TV so i figured I'd atleast be able see it on the TV if the display has crapped out on the MBP but its doesn't transmit the image to there either. So anyone got any ideas? Is it possible I caught a virus that kills displaying ability? Please help!

    I'm having the same issue
it started with distorted horizontal lines across my screen, then yesterday black just like yours. I reset the pram and the power. not working, doesnt work with external monitor either. that article seems to be the answer from CMCSK's link
i'll let you know soon how it works out for me

  • Extensive (very very very extensive) memory usage of host application with CS extension

    Hi!
I tried this only under Photoshop CS5 and InDesign CS5 under Windows 7.
When you open and close CS extension panel, the memory taken by Photoshop (InDesign) increases by 6-30MB!
In case of the simple HelloPhotoshop (HelloInDesign) panel from the examples, compiled in release mode, when you open it and close, - it's about 6-10MB each time you do it. And in case of a more complex panel, which uses AIR, etc. it's about 30MB per one panel close/open.
When I use some panels in 5-10 minutes Photoshop (InDesign) increases its memory pool from 600MB up to 1,2 GB. And more. And this memory is never freed, only until Photoshop (InDesign) shutdown.
I tried freeing all my arrays, killing display objects, etc. - nothing helped. Even a simple HelloPhotoshop (HelloInDesign) that does nothing eats memory.
By the way, InDesign eats memory a lot faster .

James, thank you for the very fast answer! I did various tests on the weekend on my computer and computer of my friend.
And I can say, that Debug flag doesn't affect memory consumption.   They still eat memory. My steps to reproduce are as follows:
    (Windows 7 32 bit)
    Photoshop CS5:
    1) set HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Adobe\CSXS2Preferences\PlayerDebugMode to 0
2*) check HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Adobe\CSXS2Preferences (just in case)
    3) Compile HelloPhotoshop example to ZXP and install via  Extension manager
    4) restart computer
    5) Run Photoshop CS5 - Memory consumption: 100 096 KB
    6) Open HelloPhotoshop and close it 10 times
    7) Memory consumption: 155 840 - 5,574 MB per one close/open
Maybe a garbage collector is expected to run and free this memory, but it never happened in my case. The memory pool was increasing to 1 GB when I was working with one of my panels - with no documents open in Photoshop
In InDesign I tried the same thing with HelloInDesign ( I had to close the panel completely and then open with Window | Extensions | HelloInDesign)
Memory consumption on start: 118 516
    Memory consumption after 10 open/close cycles: 197 516
    It's 7,9 MB per one close/open
It's the simpliest panel test. When I'm using AIR libraries the memory usage is increasing a lot faster.

  • Using Imac to view cable tv

I have space for one display in my space challenged abode.  I love the 27" imac and would like to connect it to my cable TV so I can take advantage of the killer display quality on the Imac.  How do I do that?

A usb tuner is the most common way to do this.  Take a look at the products offered by Elgato.

  • How to use VNC for Solaris 10

Hello, I am completely green when it comes to Unix / Solaris. I am trying to use VNC from the Solaris 10 Companion DVD. I have it installed. I followed the easy to use steps from this site : http://www.salixtraining.co.uk/index_files/vncsol10.htm
But the problem is I don't know how to use it now that I have it installed.
What I am tring to do is install an e-ticketing software program on my test Solaris server and I am stuck on getting PHP to work correctly and I am trying get the company, whose product I am trying to use, to connect to my server to investigate. I want them to be able to remote connect to and be able to see and access the server to see if they can help.
Can anyone help? I really need step by step instructions. Assume that I don't know anything!
    Thanks in advance,
    Aaron

Hello, here are the instructions I follow to install VNC on my systems running Solaris Express, you may use this to your own install, I dont use the one included on the companion CD, I download the one from RealVNC instead, I hope this helps:
    VNC
INSTALL VNC (RealVNC) 4.1.2 - Solaris Express 11 b71 Sparc
    a)
    File to use: vnc-4_1_2-sparc_solaris.tar.gz
    #gunzip vnc-4_1_2-sparc_solaris.tar.gz
    #tar xvf vnc-4_1_2-sparc_solaris.tar
    #cd vnc-4_1_2-sparc_solaris
    b)
    Install it by running:
    # ./vncinstall /usr/bin /usr/share/man
Note: this will also install man pages into /usr/share/man/man1
If you want to use the Java VNC viewer (Open browser and type pc_name:display#):
Copy the files from the java directory to some suitable installation directory
such as /usr/local/vnc/classes (vncserver will read this path!- dont change it):
    # mkdir -p /usr/local/vnc/classes
    # cp java/* /usr/local/vnc/classes
    c)
Add these 2 lines to .profile (under the user)- (This will make it to connect always with screen 1):
    vncserver -kill :1
vncserver -depth 24 -geometry 1024x768 (or any other combination you want like 1280x1024,etc)
note: dont use it if you want to have a different screen to connect everytime.
    d)
Create a /.vnc directory first, we will create the xstartup file inside:
    file /.vnc/xstartup:
    #!/bin/sh
    # xrdb $HOME/.Xresources      < This line Not really needed!! >
    xsetroot -solid grey
gnome-session          <add selection for KDE or CDE if needed see bellow notes>
** Here is How to Create the xstartup file:
    echo "#!/bin/sh
    xrdb $HOME/.Xresources
    xsetroot -solid grey
#/usr/dt/bin/dtsession CDE < CDE, gnome or sessions: >
    #gnome-session Gnome < comment with '#' the one you don't >
    < want to use. >
    " > xstartup
    # chmod 744 xstartup To make it executable!.
*** Sample used for the user: (use the same file for the other users) it will be created
the first time using it, just change it/add to the following sample:
First time to login will ask to create a password or
Run /export/home/name/.vnc/passwd (to add password to login)
You may need to change ownership on the following 3 if you create them under different user:
    /.vnc folder
    /.vnc/xstartup
    /.vnc/passwd
using #chown -name- .vnc (xstartup and passwd)
To check process for VNC running:
    # ps -ef | grep Xvnc
    To stop the process:
    # kill pid# (stop it hard way)
    kill display:
    #vncserver -kill :#
to connect from another system just type the hostIP:screen#, e.g. 192.168.1.20:1

  • Cinema Display 20" kills some system preferences

My MacBookPro (Core Duo 2GHz) running OS X 10.4.8 is set to require password entry to exit screen saver or wake from sleep or display sleep. These preferences work fine until I connect to the Cinema Display and run in "clamshell" mode. Then the password requirement is bypassed. This is a recent development (sometime in the last two or three weeks, before which it all worked fine). Another symptom, possibly related, is that System Preferences runs very slowly, with considerable delay, requiring a lot of CPU activity. Any way to explore what might be going on or how to fix? (Permissions o.k., I checked and fixed.)

You may want to install WinACD <http://sourceforge.net/projects/winacd/>.
See if it lets you reduce the brightness. If not, use the brightness buttons on the display.

  • Snow Leopard killed my vga displays!!

This is by far the most weird problem I have ever encountered after upgrading to a new OS.
I run a company where we have something like 15 different Macs. Mostly Intel, but different ages, Mac Pro, Macbook Pro, iMacs, Mac Mini etc.
A couple of days ago I wanted to upgrade one of the Mac Pros to Snow Leopard. It's an early 2008 3.1 with ATI hd 2600 graphics. I wanted to do a clean install, but instead of backing up everything from the system drive, I pulled it out and put in a new clean one. This way I could retrieve the data from the old drive when I need it through a USB docking station or something.
Installation went by fast and without any problems what so ever.
But first thing I noticed when the first bootup was completed was that the resolution of my monitors were suddenly completely wrong. I have two Samsung Syncmaster 2343nw monitors connected through vga, and they have always been detected and automatically been set to the correct resolution in the display preferences dialog by the old Leopard. I have around 9 of these monitors working as dual displays on Leopard machines, and a few working as extra external monitors for a couple of Macbook Pros running both Snow Leopard and Leopard. They are all connected via an dvi to vga converter and they always get detected correctly as "Syncmaster" in Display preferences.
But suddenly now, they just show up as "VGA Monitor" in Display preferences.
After fighting with this for a couple of hours trying all the suggested workarounds I could find, zapping PRAM deleting /Library/Preferences/com.apple.windowserver.plist changing the cables and so on, I finaly gave up. Fortunately I didn't overwrite the old Leopard installation so of cause I could just swap the drives back and everything should be dandy after booting back into the old Leopard install.
But **** no! Now the resolution was equally messed up in Leopard! And none of the two monitors were detected as "Syncmaster" in display pref. Now they only show up as "VGA Monitor" as they did in Snow. ***?? How can an OS mess with a monitors plug 'n' play capabilities?
I then tried the obvious which was to try and reset the monitors, remove power from them, Zap the PRAM again. I even tried a different graphics card (that didn't work in this machine) but what ever I did, the monitors where no longer detectable by the OS.
Next step was to take some identical monitors from a different machine. And yes, they where detected by Leopard on the problem machine. Since I couldn't believe that Snow had actually ruined the other two monitors I booted back into Snow hooping that it would now detect these other identical monitors. But no, same problem. Back to Leopard, and once again now suddenly these couldn't be detected by Leopard either.
I have since tried these monitors on all the other Macs I have in the company, and only one machine with an nVidia card is able to detect them correctly as Syncmaster. But none the less also this machine isn't able to see the monitors native resolution thus making it impossible to select the right setting for the monitor.
So now I have 4 monitors that's virtually unusable after being in contact
I have read a lot about people who who suddenly can't use their secondary monitor after upgrading to Snow Leopard and that Apple is aware of this, and that 10.6.4 should address this problem when we finally get some new graphic drivers. But I haven't heard about anybody who's monitor lost it's plug 'n' play capabilities after being in contact with Snow Leopard.
But maybe someone here has had any similar experience? Maybe somebody else has had luck with upgrading a dual vga monitor system to Snow Leopard? I would love to get some ideas on what happened since these monitors doesn't really work anymore on any computer.
    Thanks!

Hmm... I know that the screens native refresh rate is at 60 Hz and the resolution is 2048 x 1152. I'm unable to check it out now but I'm pretty sure I can't select 60Hz. They only have VGA connectors (the same as D-Sub I guess?) And the closest I can get to the right resolution is 1920x 1280 (or maybe it's 1200, not sure) which looks almost right, but then again not, and a whole lot more fuzzy than it used to be.
On some machines the displays are detected as "Display" and on others "VGA monitor" or "VGA display". It's supposed to detect as "Syncmaster". Nothing changes if I press "Detect". I've only tried on machines running 10.5.8, and one brand new iMac running 10.6.3 through a display port to vga converter.
But thanks for link to the toms article. I'll give it a read

  • Switching to Win 7 kills High Quality Display Performance option?

I recently switched from Windows XP to Windows 7.
I am running CS2. The files I work with contain placed PDF pages in InDesign. I have verified all links are good.
The placed PDF pages contain some pages that are scans, and some containing live text.
I have the default settings for InDesign set to High Quality Display, and also verified with the contextual menu that it is on currently for the document.
Printing is fine, and export quality is fine. (Yep I restarted, an really familiar with this setting, and switched them all around while trying several times, I even cleared the object level display settings.)
When I was on XP I got a nice crisp preview, now there is no difference between "Typical Display" and "High Quality Display", not even a flicker as I switch settings. It definitely changes if I select "fast Display" to they gray boxes.
All my text from the placed pages, even the live text, is really jagged, even if you zoom in.
My graphics driver is up to date, I tried eliminating my page file, and also making it bigger. It is currently system managed at about 8000 MB.
I am on an HP Pro 3130, 2.93GHz, with 8 gigs of ram, and an ATI Radeon HD 4550 video card. I have the same monitors as before, an HP L1906 (dual, identical monitors) set at recommended resolution. I have tried it a 60 Hertz and at 75.
Old files that looked fine before and also new files all share this issue.
I am not sure what else to try.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks in advance!

CS2 is completely unsupported under Windows 7.
Additionally with 8 gigs of RAM I imagine (hope) that you're using the 64 bit versions. This is another fly in the ointment.
Sorry, but it's time to upgrade to CS5. And this is pretty much your last chance at upgrade pricing. CS2 is the earliest version eligible.
I suggest you take advantage of it now before you have to pay full price.
If you have the suite you must upgrade the entire suite. The best deal I know of is on Amazon where you can save $30 and get free shipping: http://amzn.to/byP8go
If you have the stand alone version the upgrade is just about the same price everywhere. $199. Just make sure you by from an authorized retailer.

  • Odd... Dell Display kills internet in boot camp

When I hook up my Macbook pro to a dell 2007fp via DVI, in boot camp, the internet seems to get messed up. The computer won't be able to connect to the network, or the network connection stops. If I try to repair the connection, it says that there is limited signal to the router, which is literally 10 feet away. As soon as I disconnect the monitor the connection works perfectly. It doesn't matter if the computer is clamshell or open, the minute i connect the monitor, the internet craps out.
The monitor has worked fine, with zero problems using Vista 64 bit on a pc, the same OS that the mbp runs. I have no clue what is going on. Any suggestions?

Thanks for the advice. Unfortunately this didn’t solve my problem. It did improve slightly.
I stopped by an Apple store today and the MacPro with 30” Cinema display was doing the exact same thing. I don’t remember mine doing this in the past. To make matters even more frustrating, the problem doesn’t exist when I boot to XP. I wonder if some software or firmware updated caused the problem.

  • BootCamp Killed my MBP Display

    Hello,
tl;dr : Bootcamp installation has turned off [destroyed?] my display adapter on my MBP. How do I turn my display back on using only network file access (or ssh if I can somehow turn it on provided systemwide network files access)?
I'm desperate and more than a little scared. I think I may have bricked my MBP. I'll provide a full chain of events below, but this is definately boot-camp related, so bear that in mind.
    My Symptoms:
*At boot the display receives NO power. It is an unpowered black screen.
*I will hear the boot chime (or multiple chimes if clearing PRAM) but nothing to indicate a successful boot after that (exceptions noted below)
*Certain boot sequences do appear to work (Mouse button for CD eject, clearing PRAM gives multiple chimes, etc)
*The sleep light comes on and stays on forever (not breathing but on full time). It appears to be at about half power (not full brightness)
Symptoms indicating it is booting still:
*after some time > 1 min, the cd-eject key will begin to work, but not earlier in the boot--indicative of booting actually occuring?
*I attempted to login (gave username + tab + Pass + enter) while the install cd was in and after the system had been sitting for a bit. After hitting enter the cd drive spun up for a bit and I think I heard some HD activity. ~60 sec later I heard a blip (.wav/mp3 audio of some sort) that I've never heard before. This also happens if I attempt to 'login' without the dvd in the drive. Maybe it's booting and I'm logging in and the blip is some error alert? (I honestly cant remember if there are any auditory cues of a successful login >.<)
*Inserting a CD after 'login' causes the dvd drive to spin up, perhaps mounting it?
*By pressing the power button briefly it seems possible to put the system to sleep (sleep light starts breathing) after some time
*!* I can ping it on the network
*!* I can actually access my files on it over the network, I have admin access. ssh is not enabled though
Chain of events leading to this:
I recently upgraded (clean install from empty drive) to leopard and have spent the past week installing software, configuring it, and occasionally getting some work done. Finally, having finished my configuration of OS X I decided it was time to install windows via bootcamp so I could play some of my games. I started up the bootcamp assistant and successfully partitioned the drive (150 GB to windows, 315 GB to OS X). I then inserted the install media (Retail Windows Vista Ultimate Full Install (not upgrade), 64-bit) and hit continue when prompted by the bootcamp assistant. At first it claimed that there was no install media because it seems I hit continue too quickly after inserting the DVD and it wasnt mounted yet. After waiting for the DVD icon to appear on my desktop I hit continue again, and it paused working for a bit, then logged me out for a moment (blank screen, no dock/finder/toolbar etc just background as if it were shutting down) and then the screen just shutoff.
I'm not sure if I heard the boot chime at that time or not, I actually walked away from the system while I figured it was rebooting to install windows. When I returned the screen was black (unpowered) and nothing was happening, although I could hear the fans and the sleep light was on (not breathing). I was a bit perplexed but just let it go for about half an hour before getting concerned. I rebooted it via hard-shutdown (ten-sec power button) and am now presented with the symptoms above. It was working perfectly before the bootcamp assistant shut the machine down.
    My System:
    Mid '07 15.4" MacBook-Pro 2.4 GHz intel Core 2 Duo
    Aftermarket Crucial 4 GB (2GBx2) DDR2 PC2-5300 Memory Installed 1 month ago
Aftermarket Samsung 500 [465] GB 5400 RPM SATA HD Installed 1 week ago
Leopard 10.5.4 Installed 1 week ago from retail DVD
I mention the installation timelines because I did the installations myself and while I want to be upfront about that I do not suspect they are at fault as the machine has seen HEAVY usage (16-hour days) in the interim without a single issue.
    Attempted Fixes
*Booting from install dvd - spins up for awhile then goes idle, and I cant see anything. No apparent difference between just leaving the dvd in the drive or holding c as it boots
*Reset PRAM and NVRAM - Multiple chimes = success?
*Reset PMU - No idea if successful
*Booting as a target drive - held down t while booting and connected to a Macbook via firewire for about a minute. Did not hear a chime or have the drive recognized by the macbook even after I released t and waited for a bit. Just turned off the system and waited.
*shined a flashlight through the apple to see if the backlight had just died--I didnt see anything to suggest anything was being drawn at all.
*tried booting with an external vga monitor plugged into the dvi port via adaptor, nothing happened but I'm unsure if there's a special key sequence I'm supposed to use to make it work from boot.
    My Request:
If anyone knows how to fix this you can have my first born. I want to get my display up and running again. I have network file access, but ssh is not currently enabled. I suspect ssh could be enabled by manipulating config files directly using my admin access, I just dont know how.

Test after each of the following steps that you haven’t already tried:
    Step 1
Take all the steps suggested in this support article.
    Step 2
    From the menu bar, select
     ▹ System Preferences ▹ Print & Scan ▹ Open Print Queue
Check all printers for unfinished jobs. Deal with any you find.
    Step 3
System Preferences ▹ Accessibility ▹ Speakable Items: Off
    Step 4
System Preferences ▹ Sharing: Uncheck all boxes.
Reboot and see whether there's any change.
    Step 5
    Reset the SMC.
    Step 6
Boot in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. Note: If FileVault is enabled, or if a firmware password is set, or if the boot volume is a software RAID, you can’t do this. Post for further instructions.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal. Don’t launch any applications at first. If sleep still doesn’t work properly, back up all data and reinstall the OS. After that, if you still have the issue, make a “Genius” appointment at an Apple Store to have the machine tested.
If sleep now works as expected, go on to the next step.
    Step 7
Still in safe mode, launch the usual set of applications that are running when you have the problem, including your login items, one at a time, testing after each one. Some applications may not work; skip them. You might be able to identify the cause of the problem this way.
    Step 8
If sleep is still working after you’ve launched all the usual applications, reboot as usual (not in safe mode) and test again. If sleep still works, you’re done, at least for the moment.
If you still have the sleep issue after booting out of safe mode, post again.

  • Did I kill my PB LCD Display?

I dropped my PB. Not very hard, it slipped in its protective case and hit the floor on its side. Had a little dent in the case by AC power port. The display does not illuminate, but it very faintly shows the desktop contents. The hard drive and all seems fine, as I am using the PB with an external monitor.
Any suggestions on things I can try to bring my display back to life?
    PowerBook G4 - Wireless Card   Mac OS X (10.4.4)

What you should do is take out the battery, unplug the power cord, and let it sit with the lid open for about 24 hours. Something like that may be a permanent damage or could be simply fixed by letting it sit. Sometimes it works, but others require to be repaired/replaced. Also, the other thing you can do is try to turn up the brightness. (Sometimes you have to hold Fn down while you adjust the brightness).
I hope this is helpful and solves this issue you are having with your PowerBook G4.

  • Dear Skype- STOP killing the display pictures

This is more of a suggestion/complaint than anything else and I hope I'm putting this in the right place but, Skype's last update made everything look like iphone messages which also made the display pictures small as hell.
This was annoying as I like to actually LOOK at people's pictures and it's nice to have a quick visual represenation to remind you who you're talking to. I mean sure-- I can click on the image and see a larger version along with their profile info but...why should I do that?
NOW today I log on and skype updates and they're gone COMPLETELY from the chat windows?
WHY? WHAT REASON WAS THERE TO REMOVE THEM? The chat windows look so bland now and the only way to see display pictures is in the actual messager or when they call you, I guess. Removes a lot of the fun and point of having display pictures now.
Why not all the time??? I remeber it allowed you to hide display pictures that you did'nt want to see, but now Skype just does it for you, all the time, forever. At least let us have the CHOICE to hide them like they are now.
My suggestion: Bring back display pictures in the chat LARGE they USED to be before Skype had this iphone-like layout, WITH THE OPTION of making them tiny and round or removing them all together. Thanks.

No, this is not a glitch, but by-design behaviour. If you make the chat window slightly wider, profile pictures will appear.

This is a ridiculous workaround. Why is this even an issue? Display pictures at the top of conversation windows (at the minimum width, mind you), have been there for years, and were perfectly fine prior to the 7.3 update. What was the point of changing this?
I reverted to 7.2 as soon as I learned this was a design choice and somehow kype updated itself to 7.4 despite having automatic updates in Skype and Windows Update turned off. (Probably opened the update notification as I was typing and accidentally allowed it) I tried to reinstall 7.2 but the installer apparently couldn't connect to the server, and linked me to the main download page. Now I somehow have 7.5 on Windows and this picture issue still persists.
Why isn't this being fixed? This is an unnecessary change which might sound petty to be up in arms about, but this really irks me, as it's convenient, consistent with nearly every other messenger out there, and last year there was a problem where older group chats' display pictures would show as default and this was fixed just before they made this change. Do they even know what they're doing?
    Yeah-- I agree.
I'm still annoyed by the fact that I have to choose between ridiculously wide windows (that make the avatars vanish sometimes anyway?) and nice slim windows that have icons missing for no real reason.
It's not a big enough issue for them to really 'fix' it, I suppose since it falls under the 'pet peeves' instead of actual problems category, I guess.
But yeah, bringing the avatars back as they used to be (instead of continuously making them smaller and further away and less present as time goes by) would make me happy, personally. [:

  • The Display Kills Me!!!

    Hi,
There is something about these LAD displays that they make my eyes red and give me tension and headaches etc. only after an hour or more of looking at it.
I found that the only display im OK with is that one you get in public places the touch screen one, such as information points, ticket machines and so on... Not the greatest resoliution but at least no pain!
Does any one know how they are called and where can I get them? Thanks.

Before you go to the expense of finding a different display, try the following:
    1. Apple menu -> System preferences -> General, try testing first Different font smoothing levels at the bottom.
    2. Apple menu -> System Preferences -> Displays, try different resolutions as well as different depths of color. Go under color, and try different color calibrations.
    3. Apple menu -> System Preferences -> Universal Access.  Try black on white.
The new displays by Apple are LED, not LAD, and not LCD.
Some find they are more comfortable with non-glossy LCDs than LEDs, or just non-glossy LEDs. Sony, Samsung, Viewsonic, and NEC are manufacturers who all make different  high qualities of LCD monitors.  If you are doing photography, the only ones that make them do colormatching for the Mac are NEC & Viewsonic.  Get one that at minimum supports 1080p, not just 1080i, and has HDMI input.
I personally don't like any glossy displays as background lighting tends to glare in the display.  Unfortunately the non-glossy Macs are harder to come by, because Apple seems to think everyone will accept glossy by default.  Non-glossy screens are also known as Matte.  If turning off all light in the room is more comfortable, then the problem may just be with having a glossy screen.  Since you are using a 10.6.4 Mac, you might want to consider shopping then for a used or refurbished Mac capable of running 10.6.4 that meets your needs that has a matte/non-glossy display*:
