10.4.8 & Belkin UPS

I've searched the discussions and found some info but nothing that matches what I'm about to ask here. I believe this is OS related rather than hardware hence I've posted here....
I have used a Belkin 650VA Battery Backup UPS for about 8 months now. This device used to work perfectly until I noticed a few weeks back that it was not providing any UPS functionality.
Within Energy Saver, the UPS is seen by the OS but registered between being 261% full and 4% full within a few seconds of switching between the preferences.
I contacted Belkin and they have sent a replacement unit saying that the battery has probably died.
Problem is, the brand new unit has arrived and is showing the same issue - 261% full or 4% charge.
This and some other searching has lead me to believe this could now be an OS issue rather than hardware.
I have shortlisted the things that have changed since I first started using the UPS:
1. I added a RAID card and 2 extra HDD to the case.
2. I have upgraded to 10.4.8, previously running 10.4.6.
I have tonight completely removed the RAID from the computer and this has made no difference so I think this is an OS issue.
I've tried installing the Belkin Bulldog software but that constantly reports a UPS disconnect.
I've also installed SlimBatteryMonitor and have no joy - that reports "Charging with 0% capacity"
Please can anyone here help. Can this be resolved easily or do I have to reinstall the OS and avoid the 10.4.7/10.4.8 updates?
Any ideas?

Hello Beau:
Try a couple of "standard" things"
Run permission repair.
Run repair disk (not the same thing) from your software install DVD.
If those two do not correct your problems, I would try an archive and install:

For future reference, you should have a good backup/retreat strategy in place. In my case, I make bootable clones of my iMacs on an external firewire drive prior to any software updates using a little program called SuperDuper ($28 US at www.shirt-pocket.com).

  • Belkin UPS on Windows 7 System

I have a nice Windows XP/Pro machine configured to meet my needs (quad core processor, 4GB RAM, to video adapters driving three LCD displays). I'm ready to upgrade from XP/Pro to Win7/Pro.  The system is supported by a Belkin F6C1500-TW-RK Uninterrupted Power Supply rated at 1500VA. The UPS is now monitored by the Belkin Bulldog Plus monitor software on the XP machine.
My problem is that the monitor software was never released for Windows 7, and that appears to be my only roadblock to upgrading from XP/Pro to Win7/Pro.
Belkin's response: "We regret to inform you that due to recent events Belkin has consolidated its operations and has decided to exit from the UPS business. The drivers for the Win 7 operating system is not available and also unfortunately there will be no drivers updated for Win 7 operating system."
Since Windows 7 has an XP mode (which is supported by my Q6600 processor), can I run the Bulldog monitoring software under it?

Here How you do this thing with Belkin 4.0.2    The software runs script (bat) file at shutdown.  Get old clunker and load XP32 and Bulldog software.  Mine is remote accessable from a radmin server set up so use laptop to log on
and access.  No monitor or keys. Just an old XP box with Bulldog loaded and USB cable to Belkin UPS ( mine the 1200VA that like a brick) and network connecting.  Set up XP box as telnet client. Set up The NEW W7 64 or 32 (whatever) as a telnet server.
Power fails XP box goes into shutdown but runs bat file before it does that calls up a VB script that runs up the telnet login for W7 box and has commands to shut it down.
You can also use the same procedure to shut down a NASlite server as NASlite has telnet Server built in to its Linux setup.
Essentially with a little work you can over the network shut down later op system machines and Naslite servers over the network using Telnet clients a batch file and VBS scripts for each machine to be shutdown.  Remeber that Network switch, Router etc
need to be on a small UPS so network avaliable when power fails.
This means only one box (XP with belkin loaded) ever needs to be monitoring power and all other machines can just be power connected to their own UPS without talking Via network or USB as one box sends commands using telnet function to shutdown all when
    power fails.
    Hope this helps

  • Belkin UPS does not show up when connected to MacPro via USB

I have just replaced my aging DP G4 machine with a MacPro. I added a UPS with a USB connection. It was advertised as being Mac compatible.
After many tries to get the horrible Belkin software to work, I gave up. The worst part is that The UPS will not show up even in the Energy Saver preference pane.
I checked if the USB connection is working OK on the UPS and it seems to work, although it reports itself as "Cypress Semiconductor Serial to USB" in the System profiler.
Any ideas of what I could try to get this to work? As of now, it I am not around to shut down the machine, the battery backup is useless...

I can't offer any real help here other than to say that the Belkin UPS does work with a Mac Pro. I was running one on my G5 and when I replaced that last week with a Mac Pro I simply plugged it in and it worked.
I have never tried to use the Belkin software; I read somewhere on these forums I think that it's rubbish and because OS X supports UPS out of the box I have always relied on that.
I am connected via USB. The Energy Saver UPS panel simply shows the UPS name as "UPS", and in System Profiler itsimply says "Belkin".
BTW, I also have a Belkin UPS on my wife's iMac and it does exactly the same.
I know they work because we have had power outs here and the UPS devices have kicked in just fine.
I am guessing—but this is only a guess—that you may have some remnants of the Belkin software still on your system and that this may be interfering with Energy Saver. I would maybe try to do a finder search (apple+F from the desktop) for "Belkin" and see if that shows anything. Maybe ask Belkin what gets installed so you could check it's all gone?

  • Using a Belkin UPS with Tiger 10.4.7

I bought a Belkin UPS to protect the mac from power outages but their Bulldog Plus software doesn't detect the USB connection after the mac goes to sleep.
So every day I have to restart the mac to keep the Bulldog's <UPS disconnect!> error message from interupting my work every minute. (And to communicate with the UPS in the event of a power failure)
Does anyone here use the System Preferences>Energy Saver>UPS option to control the shutdown process in the event of power failure? Does it work?
Belkin support for macs is sketchy at best. Is all this restarting bad for the iMac?
    iMAC G4 1 GHz 1024mb   Mac OS X (10.4.7)

There are some good threads on UPS over in the G5 Forum, and a couple people who use Belkin.
You should be able to use Energy Saver AND Bulldog software (latest version?)
Found that one Quad on APS RS1500 really needed to use PowerChute (1.3.3) along with native support built into Tiger to work in all situations.
I don't need PowerChute for my MDD to recognize that it is on a UPS. Because I have more backup power than needed (have an extra battery power pack add-on that offers 2-3 hrs runtime) I've never gotten to the point where it was forced into shutdown.

  • Belkin UPS

ive been using a Belkin UPS for over a year under tiger with their Bulldog plus software,
from what i can glean from the web it would seem Leopard breaks this software as my Mac Pro no longer sees the UPS via USB. Anyone else have the same issue?
    jas

    Wingrove,
I have the same issue. I don't use the Bulldog software as it isn't support for Leopard but just the Mac power manangmement. It wouldn't recognize it. I tried it on machines a iMac G5 and a brand new intel iMac. I went out and bought an APC UPS and that shows up fine. I still use the Belkin but if it is an extended power outage it won't shut down by itself. At least it is there for brownouts etc.

  • Belkin has no Leopard support for its UPS

For those who are contemplating a Belkin UPS as protection for their iMacs, I purchased the F6C900-UNV after being told by the Belkin support personnel that it supports all MAC operating systems. After the purchase, and seemingly strange behavior by the unit, I spoke to several representatives of Belkin only to find out that NO, it does not support Leopard OS. Looking at their website, they support only earlier versions of the MAC OS. They have said that they will have the support sometime in the future, but could not give any answer as to an estimated date.

Thanks for everyones help. I just spent about an hour with the AppleCare tech going through many scenarios with this.
    1) I deleted all of the software and just plugged in the UPS. The UPS tab did not show up in the Energy Saver. But more important, opening the Apple menu/About This Mac/More info.... and clicking on the Power option, it showed: "UPS Installed: No".
    2) The same thing as above occurred when I installed the UPS software. With the software installed, I could activate the "Agent" portion of the software program and the Monitor showed that the UPS was installed with the appropriate Load and everything looked as though it should when there is a connection between the Mac and the UPS.
The Apple tech felt that the UPS with the Belkin software installed showed that the UPS was connected to the UPS. He said that the Mac may not be recognizing this particular UPS model since the upgrade for Leopard OS is not available yet from Belkin. This may be the reason that they feel the need to upgrade to another version. He did not feel that there was anything intrinsically wrong with the UPS hardware. Based on my recent contacts with Belkin, they would probably not accept a return based on the fact that it will still protect the Mac, but without the Automatic Power Software Management until their upgrade for Leopard is available.
I was wondering if there is any other suggestion that anyone might have as to any type of configuration or any overlooked condition that I might try on the Mac to bring back the ability to see the UPS in the Energy Saver?
I would feel more comfortable if the UPS was recognized by the MAC so that any configuration would assure me of correct output information.

  • Neo4 & Belkin F6C1500 UPS a no go (..or um, I mean post)

    Hey All,
Wonder if any of y'all having any problems posting using a Neo4 (1.5 bios) and belkin UPS (USB connection)?  MB just hangs after identifying CPU.  If I plug in the USB after Windows XP  is all loaded, it works fine.  I did try using a USB 2.0 add-in card connected to the UPS during boot, and that worked fine, so I tend to think its the mb.  Any advice would be appreciated.
    Thanks!

    Howdy!
Well guess what, it works sometimes, and sometimes not; no rhyme or reason - just does what it dang well feels like, when it feels like it, and without any explanation. Hmmm.  Ms. I.  Maybe thats what it "really" stands for...    :o)  Reagrding the serial port - yup it posts fine, but windows XP BSOD's me during load every time.  Seriously, I wonder if the serial port even works - I mean who uses'em any more...  Ooops... off on a tangent again - gotta quit that.  So anyway, I looked into the DVI issue mentioned (and I am using a DVI connection BTW), so I disabled USB/keyboard storage and used the PS/2 connections on my MX Duo wireless (instead of the USB) and guess what????  Yup, it worked!
...but now my mouse doesnt work.  Sigh...    Seems to be a Definite Ms. I bios issue.   But alas, whether Im right or wrong - in the end, it will ultimately be my fault....

  • UPS and iMac with Leopard

I don't know if this is an iMac issue or a Leopard issue. I have a Belkin UPS on my Alum iMac. It was showing up in the Power preference fine. I went to add a USB hub put the UPS on the hub and now I don't see it anymore in the power preference or even in the USB chain. I took off the hub and put the USB cable from the UPS back to the same USB port and I still don't see the UPS. I know the USB port on the iMac is working fine because I plugged my printer into it and it show s up and prints fine. Anyone else have this issue with a UPS. Also I reset my PRAM and no luck. I am also not using any Belkin UPS software as it doesn't support 10.5 anyway. I was using the OS UPS options.
    Thanks!!!

I have 2 APC that I did not need to install the software for and it works perfect in Leopard. I also have a client that has a 1500VA Belkin that works in Leopard. I would plug it in directly to your computer then you need to restart before it will see it in the prefs.

  • New RAM & UPS problem

I just installed 8 GB of RAM from OWC. This gives me a total of 10 GB. Ever since, I get warning beeps from my Belkin UPS when I boot up or do a CPU intensive task such as applying a filter in Photoshop. I called OWC and of course they said it's not the new RAM although this never happened prior to the new RAM and started immediately after the install.
    Any thoughts?

You can find people using smaller VA than what I see as sensible, and I would rather side on safety and not be at even 80%, 1200VA or above is a safe level and price. I went with 1500VA, in part because it was 1000VA or this, and so I could easily add a battery pack for 1 hr run time.

  • Tiger and a UPS

I just installed a Belkin UPS for my 17" iMac Flat Panel. I updated to Tiger a couple of months ago. When I plugged in the USB cable to the UPS last night, the Mac noticed it and put a little battery icon on the menu bar. I installed the Belkin UPS software, that lets me monitor and control the UPS, and it was working fine. Today it appears to have developed a conflict with the built-in USB-based UPS support, and is having communications problems and generally going bonkers. I talked to Belkin, and they said that I should disable the Mac's built-in UPS service. They said the ability to do that was in the control panel, but they had no idea how to do it. I didn't notice any ability to disable the service when I looked there last night.
    1) Can the built-in UPS support handle the Belkin UPS, including the automated shutdown (in which case, I may just leave off the Belkin software)?
    2) How do I disable the built-in UPS service so the Belkin software can function without conflict?

Jim, Welcome to the discussion area!
    1) Can the built-in UPS support handle the Belkin UPS, including the automated shutdown (in which case, I may just leave off the Belkin software)?
I would think that this is a better solution. Try removing/disabling Belkin's software. If the OS X support doesn't provide what you need then try the opposite.

  • Sudden Loss of Power... but computer works fine...

I've had my dual 1.8 for about three years now... it's not in the category of G5's that had the power recall.
I have it hooked to a Belkin UPS backup, but for the last week or so, the computer will abruptly lose power. I haven't installed any new apps or hardware for some time (new RAM about 2-3 months ago... but system profiler says it's all good).
Any thoughts as to what's going on? I've backed up all my work, similar to the peeps that built nuc fallout shelters back in the day. I'm awaiting the big one!

I have the same problem on my G5. Just randomly powers off suddenly. It happens in spurts and then stops for a while. Usually happens when I am working in or loading ProTools software...but not always. I think the power supply can't handle extra power needs or something like that... One time turning off my air conditioner seemed to help... Hard to say though since it happens randomly... FRUSTRATING!!!!! not in the list of G5's for the power supply recall... What do i do???

  • Shutdown a remote iMac using Apple Remote Desktop and Automator action

    Hi,
I have my iMac and my wife's iMac connected to the same UPS. There is only one USB connector for the UPS that notifies my iMac when its time to shutdown due to a power cut out.
Is there a way for my iMac to then send a command to my wife's iMac (which may be asleep; the iMac not my wife!) and instruct it to shutdown (forcefully)?
The Belkin UPS software enables me to launch an automator action before it shuts down my computer.
    Your help would be appreciated,
    Tony

Unless you already have Apple Remote Desktop, it will almost certainly be cheaper to just buy a second UPS for your wife's iMac than it will be to purchase ARD.
If you do have ARD 3 already, then it looks like it would be possible to create an Automator workflow that would select your wife's iMac and then send the Unix command "shutdown" (look at the man page for shutdown for the usage). I haven't tried doing this, though, so I can't say for sure, but it looks like it would work.

  • Do new dual cores ship with 10.4.3 or........

Finally after 2 years of lurking in this forum, I have ordered a DC 2.0. I am new to Mac and have about 2 weeks to review what to do first...etc. I am wondering if I'll need to do updates to the OS or firmware before doing anything else, such as removing the MS office Test Drive to put the full version on. One thing I'm getting ahead of time is a UPS.
I ordered an internal airport card to connect wirelessly via (hopefully) a Linksys wireless router connected to my husbands PC (cable connection). If I have to upgrade to 10.4.3 or do a firmware upgrade, would it be better to download it ahead of time to a CD before trying the wireless connection - as there may be something in the upgrade to make it more compatible.
Would love to have a smooth setup...have really enjoyed these forums and all the enthusiatic help here.

One thing I'm getting ahead of time is a UPS.
With my Quad received on Dec 1, I'm using a 1000VA Belkin UPS. It is the same UPS I used with my MDD Dual 867 and !9" CRT, plus misc Firewire drives and RX600 printer. I've exchanged the coumputer with the Quad (very quiet) and the monitor with a 20" Cinema. The UPS seems to be holding it's own. I, along with some others posted some links for recommendced UPSs in another thread.
If I have to upgrade to 10.4.3 or do a firmware upgrade,
would it be better to download it ahead of time to a
CD before trying the wireless connection
AS others have described, I just booted up, did the personal install on my Quad, then let it do the appropriate D/Ls and updates. You do elevate to 10.4.3 this way, plus any others that are needed. I cannot remember if wifi and/or bluetooth were updated. It was after all of this that I started addng my programs and files.
Your wireless should work fine for doing all of the D/Ls as this takes place after you insert your service provider settings.

  • Why does it take 30 seconds to sleep after the 10.7.3 update?

After applying the 10.7.3 combo update it now take 30 seconds between the time I select sleep from the menu (or press the power button) on my 2.66GHz Mac Pro. It used to be instant.

    Matthew,
Again, this started when I installed the combo 10.7.3 update. Unlike you, my screen does dot go to black-except-cursor, but remains at the desktop (or whatever app I'm in), but simply takes 30 seconds exactly to sleep. I do have a Belkin UPS attached, and I'll try to unplug the USB cable and see what happens. Also remember that I've tested this in a new unsullied user, so it's probably not anything I'm running. Another possibility is that I have 2 RAID arrays connected via eSATA, but I had those before the update and they did not seem to affect sleep then. Could be that Apple changed the way they handle eSATA.
I'm on a 2006 Mac Pro (details below).
Would be nice if we could get some help from an Apple engineer on this issue (hint, hint...)

  • Internet slow with G5 using Airport Extreme ethernet

I have the reverse of everyone else's Airport issues-I run SLOWER on ethernet! I bought & installed Airport Extreme two days ago. It's running into a DSL modem which is set up as a bridge. Our wireless computers (iMac/Intel and Dell netbook) have no problems. My newest Mac (2.26 GHz Quad Core, OS 10.6, ethernet connected), is fine, but my G5 (pre-Intel Dual 2GHz PowerPC, OS 10.4.11), also connected via ethernet, is taking 40-50 seconds to load a page. The G5 doesn't even have wireless capability, so I never loaded those software updates. Because of this I thought the G5 might be having a problem communicating with Airport, even through ethernet, so last night I updated to the latest Airport Utility package for 10.4.11 (21-20-49.pkg) This didn't seem to help.
I usually use Firefox, but tried Safari and Explorer-same problem. If I reset the DSL modem to standalone mode and connect the computer directly, the G5 downloads at its normal fast speed.
One last thing, and it's really kind of weird. I went to Network Utility and 10-pinged a couple of sites (google & bbc.uk). The average speed on the G5 for google was 23.945. The average speed on the QuadCore was 24.479! Slower!! I may be misunderstanding what this means. A page that takes 60 seconds to load on the G5 will load in 4 seconds on the Quad.
Is it Tiger? Is it because my G5 is pre-Intel? Is it because Airport doesn't like me? Please help!

Changing ports didn't work. But then I thought of running from the G5 to a different ethernet line altogether (got one for clients on the other side of the room) and the downloads were spot on. I went back to the original config-wall jack to a Belkin UPS for isolation, out of the Belkin to the computer. Swapped all the ethernet patch cords with no difference, but taking the Belkin out of the equation solved the problem. Got to find another way to isolate though.
Last thought: I don't know why the Airport and Belkin have this issue.
