  • Yamagi quake 2 client crash

I'm not sure where to start with this...so i guess I'll start with the obvious part:
"Couldn't init SDL video: No available video device"
is what I see when I try to run the quake 2 executable, mixed in with a few hundred other iterations of the same thing before the executable causes a segfault and dumps.
I *JUST* set up X for the first time and managed to get a file manager working in twm - and these things seem to be working as expected.
I compiled the quake 2 client from source and as far as I can tell, it had no errors compiling, though it didn't have any fanfare when it finished either, not so much as a "done" message.  Regardless, I think it was a successful build because the quake 2 dedicate server seems to work fine, or at least it opens and runs.  The key there being it clearly doesn't call any 3d acceleration.
I've installed what I believed was the intel 3d drivers, though I'm not sure of anyway to test for their presence beyond having pacman synchronize the packages again...
I've installed SDL and SDL2, though I didn't see anything about configuring any of them anywhere.
This is a big can of worms for me, so I'm not sure how to really approach dissecting the problem, but I'm thinking I screwed something up with the video drivers, I'm just not sure how to effectively troubleshoot that.
I've tried executing quake 2's client from command line and from within twm, same result in both places so that atleast leads me to believe it's a driver issue and not something with X
    Edit:
I suspect that SDL infact, does touch X and if it can't get window/display data from it, it may wig out.   Pretty sure my X.conf is messed up..

    Jayaraman,
What is the service pack level of NT? I think we only support NT service pack 6 and higher.

  • Quake 3 Arena - where is the console key?

    hello,
i have posted this in some quake forums, but there are only windows quakers...noone could answer this:
i have a macbookpro with german language keyboard layout.
to enter the console in the game, i had to press the tilde key.
nothing happens when i do that.
can anybody please tell me how to manage that?
do i have to set my mbp to english keyboard layout, or do i have to set my tilde key to another key?
    thx

Go to System Preferences>Language & Text and change your input source to Italian:
Maybe that will work for you?

  • Punkbuster Crashing Quake 4

    Anyone else having this problem?
When I enable punkbuster in Quake 4, it crashes the game - every time. I tried upgrading punkbuster, and I have the latest Quake patch installed (1.2).
I also re-installed Q4 (including the 1.2 patch and PB) from scratch, and ran all basic maintenance tasks on my system.
Very strange. Hoping for a solution or some feedback from any other Q4 players out there. Thanks-

I have no idea how Quake 4 uses PB (I still play Quake3 :)) but if it is anything like in Quake 3 it sometimes worked when manually upgrading PunkBuster.
You might want to contact Aspyr Support or ask your question on a forum that is more games related, Inside Mac Games for instance.

  • Quake 3 /dev/dsp error

I've done some digging trying to search out a solution to this problem, but I am coming up empty.
Fresh install of Quake 3 Arena. On startup, the console reports:
    ------- sound initialization -------
    /dev/dsp: Device or resource busy
    Could not open /dev/dsp
    So I have no sound.

I've got system sounds aplenty, and sounds playing DVDs and such. My user is a member of audio. Let me output more info than is probably useful.

    echo "quake3.x86 0 0 disable" > /proc/asound/card0/pcm0c/oss

  • Quake 1 Original Release

Hey I Picked up Macintosh Full Retail Quake Video Game and been having problems with it starting up and was wondering if possible it might be patching issues which has not been done yet trying to find older files to patch it with if anyone remembers playing this game or had similar issues with this game in past would love some help and advice will post specs below thank you for all your time
    Sincerly Nate
    Powerbook 1400/c 166Mhz
    48 MB Memory Installed
    64 MB Virtual Memory Running
    10 GB 4500 Hard Drive
    12X Stock CD-ROM
    Mac OS 9.1 Installed
    Apple Posted Specs
    http://support.apple.com/kb/SP170

I remember having trouble getting Quake to run on my 200MHz UMAX SUPERmac c500 -- this was like 1997, `98. I think it was due to low RAM (16MB) and VRAM. Try these things:
    1. copy the application to the Hard Disk and run it (don't run it from CD)
    2. turn off Virtual Memory
    3. do Command+I on the Quake program (on the HD) and allocate as much memory to it as possible without causing the Finder to crash.
    4. also try running it at 320x240, or dropping your monitor's resolution to 640x480@60Hz(and thousands of colors) and rutry to run it; see if anything changes.
It could very well be your amount of VRAM. I don't know how much VRAM your 1400c has, but if it's like 2MB you'll probably be hurting to run Quake without a crash. That's how my SUPERmac c500 was. Occasionally I run the classic version of Quake just fine under Mac OS 9.2.2 on a 350MHz B&W G3 with an ATi Radeon [Mac] video card (32MB RAM).

  • Using the quake III universal binary

I don't know if this is the right area to ask this question but I downloaded the quake III arena universal binary from apples website so that I could use my (PC) quake III arena disc on my mac but I don't under stand what it means by selecting the retail Installation. It would be greatly appreciated if anyone can offer me a walk through of what to do.

Same thing is happening to me with the UB (1.32c) and copying over the baseq3 directory from the cd. /Applications/Quake3/{Quake3.app|baseq3/}. I get a qhite screen but it's not locked up! I found it's actually the menu screen. So if you hit ESC and then Y then Return, you exit the game.
So it seems to me that either the graphic lib is effed up or im missing pak's that contain all the graphics, thus leaving me with a white backdrop.
My cd (which works on Windows and Linux) only has pak0.pk3 and pak1.pk3.
    Any ideas anyone?

  • Quake 3 Sources were RELASED

    Hi,
Quake 3 Arena Sources was relased. To download sources try this :
    ftp://ftp.idsoftware.com/idstuff/source … source.zip
I would like to apply developers. Can you make package of package of this piece fantastic game ? Thanks a lot.

iBertus wrote:Lets face it, the Q3 engine is past it's prime. The procedure of opening the source code took ages due to legal issues and now the engine is little more than a programming example. ET uses this engine (a modified version) and it's pushing the limits of what this is capable of. No new open source super games will come from this code release until some major enhancements are made.
I have to disagree here, i used to be a game lover, left it with windows (although from time to time i go to the dark side to try some) and you cant compare Q3A to today games in Windows, but in Linux the only game similar to this engine capabilities is CUBE, if you are talking about Wolfenstein Enemy Territory, its closed source, so it doesnt matters if its reaching the engine limits, as thats no where near from what free software is! I mean, Cube is alright, but its not that known and i dont think is as stable and tried as its Q3A engine. Ofcourse that there are much better game engines, like Doom 3's, but you are not seeing its source code in a long time.
Anyway, i think it opens a lot of posibilities to those willing to improve or modify code, but dont have the time to create something from scratch... again, i think its something real good for companies to do, it keeps the game alive, and the free software community happy.

  • Only one sound at a time work

    Hi
Installed arch linux a couple of days ago and got most stuff up and running. Altho one problem I just noticed it that I can only play one sound at a time. For example, if I have music playing from mpd I don't get any sound from youtube or from urban terror only the sound from mpd will be played. I've googled some, but don't really know what to search for
If you do have a explanation please keep the reply simple as I am still learning
    Thanks in advance

this might be obvious but are you using intel? the youtube and urban terror/any mmap based game is normal.see http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/All … nd_at_once. also from the urban terror webpage: "Urban Terror 4.1 can run on Quake 3 Arena or on the free ioUrbanTerror." if you switch to iourbanterror the alsa issue is fixed. or else you have to start any urban terror with et-sdl-sound which only works on i686.
edit: if you check the wiki first for stuff like this you usually get a faster response and you get to use your brain as a bonus to
I actually googled my a* of and searched the wiki, but was unable to find that site. And I do have intel, however after reading
In Linux, only one program can play a sound at a time unless you have a soundcard that supports hardware mixing (all/most onboard soundchips don't.)
I decided to use my pci card (a creative audigy 2 ZS). I have been having trouble before getting it to work so I thought I would use my onboard card instead. But it was fairly easy this time
(had to disable the onboard card in the bios and change the module to snd-emu10k1) and woops it worked
    Thanks for all the help

  • Playing an old game on a new Mac

I just bought Quake 3 Arena for my MacBook Pro and when I try to install the game it says the classic environment is not supported and won't allow me to install it. Is there anyway I can install it or will a 12 year old game not play on a new mac?

Just to repeat: He WILL be able to RUN the game on his Mac as there is a Universal Binary version available (I know because I have it and have used it in the week since I've upgraded to Lion). It's just difficult to INSTALL because one has to manually extract files from the installation CD and then locate and install the UB version from wherever the developer stores it on the net. I gave him a link to the application and a link to the germ of some instructions for installing - from the CD - the other bits needed for the application to run.
Here's a little more, but I'm not interested in spending any more time tracking down every little tidbit of information needed for a self-confessed ignoramus (no offense intended) to whack together a 10-year-old game for a brand-new Mac:
    http://forums.macrumors.com/archive/index.php/t-295870.html
"all you need is the pak0.pk3 from your quake disc. put it into the baseq3 subfolder of the universal binary. the pak0.pk3 file should be about 460mb and has all the textures.
you can use ioquake3 if none of the other universal doohickeys work - it worked for me. http://ioquake3.org/"

  • Icon Text Cutting Off

I have just reinstalled tiger on my laptop and the icons sometimes act strangely in that the icons with a single line of text beneath, usually appear normal, though sometimes the bottom of the text is cut off. When I select the icons, and the coloured background that indicates that it is selected appears behind the text, the bottom of the coloured background/shape is also cut off. On the icons (folders, files) that have two lines of text, I can sometimes see the tops of some of the bottom line letters poking up through the cut off line, again when selected the background is also cut off. Any help would be much appreciated,
    Thanks.

I had a file appear in my root directory as a result of using quake 3 arena 1.32 (or according to various posts in google groups in any case), which I then made invisible again so as to avoid accidentally damaging or deleting it. The file was "botlib.log" which I was informed of as an "empty log file" by the mac os x console utility. Perhaps this is connected to the cutting off problem?

  • Most relevant test score for PPro CS5 to run on notebook?

Hi, I hope I didn't miss this topic anywhere in the forum. Since I am in the market for a new notebook to occasionally edit 3-5min clips of panasonic HMC 150 AVCHD material (most of the time just office work), I was wondering what the best and still affordable notebook (EUR 1500-1800) would be. Apart for a wide discussion of system requirements and recommendations I couldn't find what would be the most relevant test score to assess how well PPro CS5 is going to work. Some say you need to get a notebook for EUR 3000, some say one for EUR 1200 would still work - I guess it depends on how much you are going to edit and how much time you have. I was curious if there was such a score that serves as a guideline. For example, below you find such test scores for a Sony notebook. What would be the most informative as to whether and how well PPro CS5 will work. Any information is greatly appreciated.
btw: I would appreciate recommendations on these two notebooks

thank you very much for your answer. Do you think the following notebook would be suitable for occasional editing of 3-4min clips (we have got a desktop editing machine with i7, 12gb, nvidia gts250, and 4 7200 barracuda hdds)? so basically it should only be able to work as a backup editing machine in case two clips have to be finished at the same time. since there is only one hdd, I could put an sdd into it as well. and I could upgrade to 16gb ram. the reason, why this particular notebook is interesting for me, is that through a student discount I can get it for EUR 1,700 instead of EUR 2,500 (cheapest price on the market for this setup). I am aware that it won't be as fast as my desktop (which works spledidly with avchd!), but it should be faster than a retired snail overtaking during his afternoon nap ;-)
I would really appreciate your opinion on that one or from anybody else that has particular experiences with this notebook and avchd!
    thanks
