10.5.2 combo update - auto sleep no longer works

Since performing this upgrade yesterday, auto sleep no longer functions. The screen saver blanks the screen at the correct time but that's as far as it goes.
I've repaired permissions, tried resetting the Energ Saver defaults, resetting the SMC and deleting the com.apple.PowerManagement.plist file and am no further forward.
Is anyone else experiencing auto sleep issues after the 10.5.2 upgrade?

Okay. I think I've solved auto-sleep. At least for my system. It requires going into to terminal and changing the minutes of 'disksleep'. It's very easy and non-invasive. First check your pmset settings in termnal by typing: pmset -g
You should see something like this:
Active Profiles:
Battery Power -1
AC Power -1*
Currently in use:
sleep 10
sms 1
displaysleep 5
hibernatefile /var/vm/sleepimage
halfdim 1
lidwake 1
ttyskeepawake 1
acwake 0
autorestart 0
hibernatemode 3
Hibernate Free Ratio 5
womp 0
disksleep 12
First, you want to be sure your hibernatemode is set at 3 (the default in Leopard). If it isn't you can change it by typing: sudo pmset -a hibernatemode 3
This is the command that you will now use to change what I think fixes auto-sleep. If you notice 'sleep' and 'displaysleep' are set at the minutes you have set them at in your Energy Preferences (5 and 10 in my example above). You can just leave these settings. 'Disksleep' is the command that should tell your computer to hibernate (auto-sleep) and it is by default set at whatever your 'sleep' setting is. What I did was change 'disksleep' to 12 (again the command in terminal for this would be: sudo pmset -a disksleep 12).
My theory is that by seperating the 'disksleep' setting from the 'sleep' setting by a couple of minutes, the command to hibernate is somehow stronger or clearer. At any rate it worked for me when nothing else would. If for some reason the computer doesn't hibernate at exactly 12 minutes, give it an hour and see if it does sleep in that time. You can test this with AC power and then with battery. Sometimes the AC is easier to get auto-sleep working for some reason.
If you want to save your pmset settings just copy your pmset -g query in a text file and you can revert to whatever your default was by then using the sudo pmset -a command.
The first step before you change the pmset settings is to make sure that no third party software is keeping your system awake. Console activity should display that, whether it's a program or a widget. Obviously you need to either uninstall or deactivate the offending program or widget before moving forward. Also make sure you've completely followed all the previous suggestions for troubleshooting lack of auto-sleep (pmu, pram, safe mode resetting... de-selecting preferences (for example: uncheck all boxes in advanced settings for Bluetooth if you use bluetooth devices or uncheck Wake for Ethernet network administrator access in Energy Preferences Adaptor Options).
Hope this helps someone else. I've been struggling with this issue since leopard came out. And through trial and error worked my way up to this. Let me know if it works for you.

  • Since the update my password no longer works only on apple tv

    Since the update my password no longer works  on apple tv

    Cute.  I redid my apple password last nite and made it real simple.  It worked fine signing in to the forum just now.  When I use it to sign in on Apple TV  I keep getting message.  ' server not available'. I had gotten it to sign in earlier but netflix wouldn't play the movie.  Just the previews.   So I reset everything and tried to start over and I can't log on at all.  So if you have any helpful suggestions I would be interested in hearing them. Thank you

  • Auto-sleep won't work when web pages auto-refresh

    Dear Apple,
    Around 4 years ago, I noticed that my computer stopped going to sleep. I first noticed it shortly after adopting Gmail for my email platform and was subsequently able to isolate the issue down to Gmail and other websites, such as Huffington Post, which auto-refresh. Apparently, any website that auto-refreshes at shorter intervals than the auto-sleep is set to kick in, prevent the computer's auto-sleep function from activating.
    I have spoken at length with AppleCare about this issue and understand that this is "by design." For instance, we wouldn't want the computer to constantly go to sleep while watching a movie or downloading and conversely, if we are actively working at our computers it's nice that Gmail auto-refreshes and keeps us appraised of incoming mail. However, since the vast majority of users now leave their browsers with multiple tabs open and due to the fact that more and more websites now auto-refresh, the auto-sleep function has become outdated and non-functional. While users can always manually put their computers to sleep, everyone at some time or another forgets to do so. This is exactly why computers are supposed to auto-sleep in the first place. Aggregated across millions of users, this results in a huge waste of electricity.
    I've been writing/calling Apple (through AppleCare and the online feedback form) about this issue for 4 years now. I keep hoping that with each operating system release, some sort of "smart auto-sleep" function will be incorporated that will recognize when websites auto-refresh and still allow auto-sleep to kick in. Unfortunately, this does not appear to be the case in Lion.
    I work in the energy efficiency field, specifically in lighting, and care deeply about this issue. I consider Apple to be an industry leader on this issue as well. I'm not familiar with the technical side of this issue, but I assume that with the right type of programming, the operating system could override a webpage's auto-update feature and activate auto-sleep, while not interfering with functions where a user would not want the computer to go to sleep, such as watching a movie. With Lion, Apple has focused its energy on making the computer adjust to the user,rather than the user adjusting to the computer. Yet, in this case, it appears to be the other way around.
    It is time for Apple to update the auto-sleep function so that it takes into account websites that auto-refresh. When I set my computer to auto-sleep after so many minutes, I want it to do so, regardless of whether I have a browser with auto-updating websites open. Apple must take this issue seriously, as the wasted electricity is too important to ignore any longer.
    Sincerely,
    An Energy-Conscious User

    I am obviously talking to Apple AND I posted this letter here, because a lot users seem confused about why their computers won't sleep. Even most AppleCare reps are confused. In the past, I couldn't find much in the way of explanations pointing to this issue, so I thought I post it here in case other people are looking for an explanation.
    The auto-sleep function was built before websites auto-updated and needs to be updated to accomodate them. For the average user, it doesn't make sense for the computer not to sleep just because Gmail is open. Just because some website auto-refreshes in my browser, doesn't mean I never want my computer to sleep. By the same token, if I wanted to turn off auto-sleep I could easily do so from within Energy Saver Preferences. The two should be independent, so the user has the choice.
    Why should I have to close my browser every time I walk away from my computer in order for it to sleep? I've acknowledged that in certain circumstance it makes sense for the computer not to auto-sleep: watching a movie, uploading, etc, but Apple has already accounted for those instances because the computer does not auto-sleep when those programs are running. All I'm suggesting is making the auto-sleep mechanism more sophisticated so that it isn't overridden by websites auto-refreshing.
    Why the negative attitude, dwb? Based on the amount of time you spend in these discussion forums, you obviously never turn your computer off, so this doesn't really affect you. Maybe it's time to step outside and get some fresh air?

  • Mythtv, auto shutdown no longer working, scheduler.cpp ?

    Following a recent update the automatic shutdown of my backend is no longer working (well, at least not reliably).
    I have 3 scripts set up in the relevant sections of the mythtv-setup to check if myth is ok to shut down, set the new wakeup time and perform the actual shutdown. These scripts still work alright, but the backend is not initiating the shutdown any more in some cases.
    Lots of trial and error makes me think that this is somehow related to scheduler.cpp, but I am not sure if this is the case or how to fix it.
    I think I have established a pattern:
    Scenario 1:
    - Boot backend
    - do nothing else (e.g. start remote frontend or mythfrontend on the backend)
    - automatic shutdown does not work
    Scenario 2:
    - Boot backend
    - start remote frontend
    - shut down frontend
    - automatic shutdown does not work
    - restart backend service (without reboot)
    - automatic shutdown works
    I also notice that in scenario 2 (when automatic shutdown works) there are a whole heap of these kind of messages right until shutdown occurs:
    2013-04-29 19:18:07.592125 N [660/738] Expire autoexpire.cpp:641 (SendDeleteMessages) - Expiring 156 MB for 1073 at 2013-04-13T11:50:20Z => Hulk

    In scenario 2 (successful) I see the following in the log just before the above auto expire stuff:
    Scheduler scheduler.cpp:2307 (HandleRunSchedulerStartup) - Scheduler: Seem to be woken up by USER
    then a whole heap of auto expiry stuff and finally:
    Scheduler scheduler.cpp:2862 (CheckShutdownServer) - CheckShutdownServer returned - OK to shutdown
    2013-04-29 19:19:55.276775 N [660/735] Scheduler scheduler.cpp:2947 (ShutdownServer) - Running the command to set the next scheduled wakeup time :-

    sudo /home/laffi/scripts/MythShutdown
    In scenario 1 (unsuccessfull shutdown) I also get
    Scheduler scheduler.cpp:2307 (HandleRunSchedulerStartup) - Scheduler: Seem to be woken up by USER
    and then autoexpiry, but then, once a frontend connects:
    ProcessRequest mainserver.cpp:1385 (HandleAnnounce) - adding: frontend as a client (events: 0)
    I don't get autoexpiry of files and no shutdown, both of which I believe are initiated by scheduler.cpp
    I also noticed the following in the logs when auto shutdown does not work:
    2013-04-29 15:40:36.046359 I [648/848] ProcessRequest mainserver.cpp:1385 (HandleAnnounce) - adding: mythbackend as a client (events: 1)
    which does not seem to appear in the logs when auto shutdown works.
    Any ideas ? I have found very little (next to none) regarding scheduler.cpp when searching.

    The other side of the VPN is a TMG server hosted at our main office.  I can connect to it off site, and others were connected to it remotely as well, but for some reason users at that remote site can no longer connect to the VPN.
    I talked to my ISP wondering if there was something that was blocked due to the change from dhcp to static IP addresses, but they don't see anything.

  • VW WIFI Auto-On No Longer Works

    I updated my Droid Incredible yesterday to GB 2.3.4 and now the VW WIFI Auto-On app is no longer working.  It had actually been working poorly over the last couple of weeks, whereby it wasn't turning the WIFI radio off.  Now it is no longer turning the WIFI radio on or off.  Anyone else having issues?

    Are you still unable to turn the WiFi On or Off after the SW update on your phone?
    I have thoroughly researched this and did not find this to be a reported known issue by other users after the SW update. Have you tried performing a soft reset or hard reset after you updated the SW on your phone? I recommend performing the soft reset first and if you are still unable to turn the WiFi On or Off then performing the hard reset.
    Please post back if you are still unable to turn the WiFi On or Off and I'll be more than happy to further assist you.

  • Automatic Sleep no longer working on my Mac Mini :(

    I just noticed my Mac Mini is no more going to auto-sleep as it should.
    What can I try?
    Resetting both SMC and P/VRAM did not solve the issue. I've also cleaned all system and program caches, plus repaired permissions.
    I've searched the forums, and found quite a lot of topics about similar issues. Most were actually about notebooks. A lot of 'go there and delete this' solutions popped out, but I feel insecure to trash entire system folders.
    Anyone can provide me with a safe & complete list of what I have to delete please?

    really? sorry about that.
    I guess that forum is restricted for people with at least two stars.
    Here is a repost of that link.
    My Mac pro doesn't auto-sleep. I've done an extensive search for possible solutions on apple support and elsewhere but nothing seems to cure it.
    I made a little sleep program of my own which I'd like to recommend to anyone with the same problem. It's a very simple shell script that checks system idle time and if it's bigger than the sleep timer you set in system preferences it puts your computer to sleep. It will work so long as you can manually put your computer to sleep from the apple menu.
    You'll also need to create a launch daemon to periodically run the script.
    here are the steps to do it.
    1. copy and paste the following into TextEdit.
    <pre style="
    font-family: Monaco, 'Courier New', Courier, monospace;
    font-size: 10px;
    margin: 0px;
    padding: 5px;
    border: 1px solid #000000;
    width: 720px;
    color: #000000;
    background-color: #ADD8E6;
    overflow: auto;"
    title="this text can be pasted into the Script Editor">
    #!/bin/bash
    idl=$"`ioreg -c IOHIDSystem | awk '/HIDIdleTime/ {print int($NF/1000000000); exit}'`"
    sleeptimer=$"`defaults read /Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration/com.apple.PowerManagement "Custom Profile" | grep "System Sleep Timer" | awk '{print $5}' | sed -e 's/;//g'`"
    st=`expr $sleeptimer \* 60`
    if [ $idl -gt $st ]; then
    shutdown -s now
    fi
    </pre>
    2. Format it as *plain text* (shiftcommandT in TextEdit) and save it as sleep.sh (don't use the .txt extension) at the top level of your hard drive. (You can save it elsewhere of course but make sure it's accessible to every user and change the path to the script in the commands below).
    3. make it unix executable by entering the following command in terminal.
    *chmod 755 /sleep.sh*
    4. Download and install Lingon .
    5. Open Lingon and create a new Users Daemon
    Call it,say, com.sleep.launchd (the name is not important)
    On line 2. enter /sleep.sh
    and in section 3 set it to run every 30 seconds (that can be varied).
    Click save (you'll have to enter your admin password).
    6. Restart.
    That's it. Once this is done you can forget about it. The sleep settings are still controlled from system preferences. The sleep agent will work with every user and even over the login window.
    To uninstall it, open Lingon , select the launch daemon you made and uncheck the box "Enabled" in the upper right corner. save and restart.

  • After installing latest update Realplayer recording no longer works, I think Mozila is using a library file with the same name

    After installing the latest update to Firefox onto Vista operating system the record part of real player no longer works, I think Mozila and Real are using a library file with the same name and the Mozila update is overwriting a Realplayer library file.

    I was giong to say, "Help me, Adobe Joe Kenobi", but it looks like you're growing a beard waiting for an answer, too.
    The same thing happened to me today. I trusted the "update" message since it was from Adobe, and apprently did so at my own peril. Now I get the "failed to load Core dll" message with a secondary reference to a memory address.
    Just an observation, but what good are these forums when there are no answers? I see this problem as "Caused by Adobe Update", and would expect them to troublshoot and offer up a remedy. Since you've been waiting over two months with no response, I suppose it's time to trek off wasting more of my precious time to fix their problem. If I find the solution, I'll post it back to you.
    May the Force be with you.

  • After iOS 5.0.1 OTA update Siri is no longer working

    Anyone having the same issue? Since I updated to 5.0.1 Siri no longer works. All I get is the typical " I'm really sorry about but I can't take any requests right now. Please try again in a little while ".
    Any ideas? I've powered off the phone, rebooted the phone a couple of times yesterday. Didn't work. I tried this again this morning and it's not working either.

    All was good, My battery and SIRI were working fine, then my bad luck that i updated my phone to iOS 5.0.1 (which is promissing better battery life and Siri funcionality). After updating all went crazy, SIRI is not working any more (it says cant do any thing right now and try later, and i am now trying from 2 days), Battery is not lasting longer then 12 hrs as it was better before. I am seriously thinking to go back to my iPhone 4 and distroy iPhone 4S

  • AC1750 update failed, router no longer works, way to reset it?

    I have an AC1750 that someone tried to update the firmware on, and something happened during the update process so now it no longer works.  Is there a way to reinstall a fresh copy of the firmware to get it working again?

    I believe, they were referring to the power light, that's the Cisco Logo on the top of the router. It should stay solid or stable. If the lights are still flashing, then you may need to flash the firmware.

  • Safari 5.1.4 Lion auto-click no longer works for me

    I have a bookmarks folder on a MacBook Pro that is set to auto-click, it launches in tabs several sites that I look at every morning.
    I upgraded to 5.1.4 Lion last night, and this morning, the auto-click didn't work.
    It works with Safari 5.0.5 on the same machine.
    It works with Safari 5.1.3 on the same machine.
    It works with Safari 5.1.4 Snow Leopard on my iMac.

    Hi Steve,
    Try disabling the Lion "resume" feature...
    Open System Preferences > General
    Deselect:  Restore windows when quitting and re-opening apps
    Now go to ~/Library/Caches/com.apple.Safari/Cache.db
    Move the Cache.db file to the Trash.
    Restart your Mac for changes to take effect then try Safari.
