10.5.7 fixes USB drive formatting bug

Despite all of the issues people are having with the 10.5.7 upgrade, one good thing has happened with this latest release...Apple has finally fixed a bug that would not allow you to format an external USB drive using Mac OS X Extended Journaled. See:
Apple Discussions Search: format USB input output error
http://bit.ly/zRAM0
You could previously format a drive via FireWire. I successfully formatted an external USB drive this past weekend with 10.5.7 installed. Then, I rolled back to 10.5.6.

Hi Carolyn,
I can't seem to post a new topic to that forum. Despite being logged in to Apple Discussions, every time I click on the "Post new topic" link, I get redirected to an Apple Discussion User Login page with a Cancel and Login button. It's a never-ending loop. I tried clearing my cache and cookies in three different browsers and still cannot post to tat forum. Odd.

I have recently deleted several old backups from a portable usb drive (formated NTFS-3g(MacFUSE). The macmini can´t see it anymore but my imac does? The usb ports of the mac mini can still see my other drives formated with FAT32.

Thanks, it is working now, after I have installed NTFS3G.
I did not format the drive. I was using it as purchased to do backups for a while. After the corporate backup system was working correctly again I was using the disk at home for my homevideos. Since the corporate backup was running correctly for ten days in a row, I have decided to delete those backupfiles on the usb drive. Each backup was a folder consisting of almost 30GB data, mirroring the servers harddrive which is running on windows xp. After I have deleted those folders, only the video files remaind and I could not open the drive on the macmini anymore.

  • TV firmware requires USB drive formatted FAT or FAT16, but neither of my computers can do that!

I reported my problem with my recently bought  26C100U1 which does not respond to my computer's monitor sleep signal.  Since I received no replies to my question, I thought updating the firmware might help, but neither of my computers can format a USB drive with FAT or FAT16.  Their only options are FAT32 or exFAT.  What am I supposed to do next?!!!

I do not know what's up with your HP desktop, running Win7 (64-bit). But, on my Win 7 64bit system, if put in a USB flash drive in my system, then click on 'Computer', right click on my USB flash drive, click on 'Format', click on the drop down menu arrow under 'File system', my choices are NTFS, FAT (default), FAT32, exFAT. See the attached image.
But, I have not actually tried to format my drive with FAT. You may have to create a smaller partition because of the size limitations of FAT (really FAT16).
Maximum Partition Size Using FAT16 File System
So, assuming your Win 7-64 offers the same choices, if necessary create a smaller partition, then just pick the 'FAT' and format your USB flash drive with that.
    Good luck.

  • Created document on Mac Air Pages, saved it to USB drive formatted to ExPat but on Windows 8.1 desktop, this file came up as a JPEG image.  Any ideas please?

I created a document on new Mac Air 11.6 Pages and saved it to a USB flash drive, formatted with ExFat.  However, on Windows 8.1 desktop, this shows and opens as a JPEG file rather than in MS Word.  When I try to open it with Word, it cannot be edited.  Any ideas please?

Of course Windows (Office) can't open a pages document.... you have to save as word or export to word.
I took it for granted you knew this (that's my fault). Each word processor has it's own language (programing). Saving the pages file to a disk and putting it in a windows machine then opening it is like someone mailing you a newspaper  or magazine in a foreign language you do not read and wondering why you only looked at the pictures.
Not only are you new to Apple it's now apparent you are unknowledgeable about using and understanding technology.
This is basic stuff... Some classes or books on how to transfer/exchange files from one application and operating system to another will help you... or ... just stick with one operating system and applications.

  • Files Copied to USB Drive Disappear

I attached a WD USB drive formatted as FAT32 to my new Airport Extreme but cannot seem to get it to work correctly. I try to copy a file to it, it appears to copy fine (copy finishes, the file shows up in the drive) then a few seconds later the file disappears. I then hooked the drive directly to my Mac and, sure enough, the file is not there. I hooked it back to the AEBS and tried copying a file to it from a PC. Same as before, all appears to go well but the file doesn't actually get copied. Any idea what might cause this and how to fix it?

This morning I was playing around some more and found that some of the files I tried to copy to the drive now show up when the drive is connected to my Mac but are still not visible when connected to the Airport Extreme. I have a different drive that works fine but it is smaller (500GB vs 750GB).

  • How do I make a backup recovery using my portable usb drive?

I have an 8gb usb flash drive, and I tried to backup my system onto it, and couldn't. It said "Please insert a usb flash greater than 7.6gb". So I inserted another portable usb drive that had over 180gb of free space, and it still keeps repeating the same message even though the drive clearly has more than 7.6gb on it, it has 180gb. So how do I correct the problem so that I can backup my recovery system? My laptop is brand new, I just bought it a few days ago, I haven't even had it a week.  Here is the computer stats
    Toshiba Satellite L455D-S5976
OP: Windows 7 Home Premium 32-bit
    AMD Sempron SI-42
    2GB DDR2 RAM, 250GB HDD

Duplicating your post on the same Category won't help you much and it makes it difficult by
    keeping track.
The problem you are having is related to the fact that your USB Drive format is FAT or FAT 32.
This type of format doesn't allow for a single file to be greater than 2GB and 4GB respectively,
and the single backup file you are trying to copy is greater than that so it doesn't allow it.
What you can do is format your USB Drive to be NTFS, which has no limit on what size a file can be
except the size of capacity the USB can store, but I'm not sure that's a good idea because of
    the disadvantages of the format.
Also you can burn it to DVD's, which is recommended, or buy an external Hard Drive.
When you insert the USB go to My Computer and left click on the USB icon and go to properties
and there you will see what format it is.

  • IPhoto Library on USB drive - fails to start

I recently moved my iPhoto library to a USB drive (formatted as HFS+) and have been using it just fine.
This morning I realized I am unable to open iPhoto. I keep getting the spinning beach ball and after some time I have to force quit.
I used Disk Utility to repair the USB disk and it did repair some items, but even after that, no-go.
Any idea what may be happening?
I can browse the mounted disk just fine. It has only one item, and that is the iPhoto Library.

if the iPhoto library is not on a Mac formatted disk - Mac OS Extended (journaled) - you will have unpredictable results
If you drag it back to the internal drive will it work? Can you reformat the USB drive Mac OS Extended (journaled)? - this will erase everything so be sure you have a backup first. Once the iPhoto library i son the correctly formated drive it will work fine

  • How to create a system recovery USB drive?

My U845-S406 crashes every 15 minutes with a BSOD referencing iastor.sys.
Multiple diagnostics say it is all good.
Multiple virus softwares say it is clean.
It crashes even quicker in safe mode.
I have the latest Toshiba raid drivers, but updated to a more recent Intel set.  The error changes to iastora.sys, and goes back to iastor.sys when I switch back to the Toshiba drivers.
I booted holding down 0, and told it to restore; but it promptly crashes.
I made a W7 disk and tried to load it, but it promptly crashes.
As a last resort before throwing the computer out,  I want to create a system recovery USB drive, format the harddrive and try recovering from the USB; but I don't have the Toshiba Recovery Media Creator (or any Toshiba software at all...)  I downloaded a copy and ran it, but it says I don't have a HDD Recovery Area.
I know I have one because 1) I can access it by hold down 0, and 2)Partition Wizard showes it.
So, how can I create a system recover USB drive (or make Recovery Media Creator find the HDD recovery Area...)
Interestingly, the other day it spent 90 minutes installing a W7 update without a problem, but crashed immediately when done.  Maybe that means something.

  • USB drive spontaneously switches to read only

This has happened to me twice now. I have inserted a USB drive (formatted for FAT32) into Macbook. The USB drive has been fine for a while on both my Macbook and my Windows 7 computer. Then suddenly and spontaneously switched to read only while inserted into Macbook, without any action on my part. I have OS 10.8.5 installed on my Macbook Air. Anyone else have this problem?

Does your USB drive have a lock switch like SD cards? I have found that sometimes my SD cards will show the same behavior, it is because the lock switch got moved during insertion.
Also usally just ejecting and plugging in resolves the problem.
What is the brand and model of your flash drive?

  • Usb drives disconnecting

My wifes late 2010 macbook pro has been having a serious issue with ejecting just about any usb drive connected.  Shes a graphic designer and is constantly plugging and unplugging portable drives and mini flash drives, but always sure to properly eject them before pulling them.  Recently (and becoming more and more frequent), the drives with just disconnect on its own and will give the warning that the drive was not properly ejected.  it then immediately tries to mount again and disconnectes again.  this happen no matter which drive or flash unit we use on either usb port.  every drive she has had problems with works perfectly fine with no eject problems on my 2011 macbook pro, so that rules out bad cables or drives.  We've also tried usb hubs and zapping the pram, but with no success.  as of 5 mins ago, i just tried to connect a usb microSD adapter with a 8gb microSD card inside and it ejected in less than 30 secs and goes on an endless loop of mounting and improperly ejecting.  the same usb is now in my macbook pro and is fine as i write this.
if anyone has had this issue or knows what the problem may be, please enlighten us.  im leaning more towards the ports are shot....but ive been know to be wrong.  any help is appreciated.  thanks in advance.

I am having the exact same problem under 10.6.1 with a WD MyBook USB drive, formatted as Mac OS Extended Journaled. The drive worked fine under Leopard, but since upgrading, I cannot copy anything to it without the drive ejecting (while copying files) and then remounting on its own. Within 3 minutes, it will eject, remount, eject, etc., about 5 times.
I have repaired permissions, checked the USB drive with disk utility, checked cables, switched USB ports, all to no avail.
And I am not using a USB hub; the drive is plugged directly into the back of my iMac.
It feels like this problem is related to Snow Leopard and the "auto-sleep" features of these drives. In my gutt, I believe these drives would work if they had a proper on/off switch, instead of auto-sleep, etc.
One other thing I've noticed (sorry to ramble on): I can eject the drive, but it will remount to the desktop after about 30 seconds.

  • Regular + 3 startup chimes with USB Drive

I want to know if this behavior is normal.
I have a 300GB USB drive (formatted as Mac OS extended (journaled)) connected to my mac mini with its power on all the time. When I start up the mini after the USB drive has spun down I get the regular startup chime plus 3 lower volume startup chimes. The activity light on the USB drive flashes during the 3 chimes. Then the system starts normally with the USB drive icon on the desktop.
If I shutdown the mini and start it up again but now the USB hard drive has not spun down, I get the normal single chime. Also, if the USB drive is disconnected, I get the normal one chime.
Are the subsequent 3 chimes at startup OK and just telling me that there is an external hard drive?

I got my mac mini in March.
I plugged the hard drive into a different USB port...still the same 3 extra chimes at startup.
I plugged in a USB flash drive. It made no additional sounds. It appears it's just the hard drive.
As I said before, I notice no problems with the mini. I just used iMovie to edit a two hour home movie and burned it using iDVD.
Does anyone have an external hard drive connected to a USB port and NOT experience extra chimes at startup?

  • Make USB drive available

At our company, when projects get completed, we move them off the
server to an archive location. Currently this is a USB drive,
formatted to NTFS, connected to a Windows box, and accessible to users
via FTP. I am the only one that needs write access to it when I add
projects. Users just need read only access. FTP has been
problematic. I would like to find another method to make it
accessible to users. Preferably not something that involves making
changes to every PC. Any suggestions? If I need to change the disk
format, I am open to that. Thanks.

Well, I certainly wouldn't call it "best practices"... your post gave me the impression that you were married to USB drive so I gave you a solution based on that. It would be better to put the data on your high-cost RAID arrays, but that's the whole reason you have the archive... to get it off there. There's no reason you can't leave it on the Windows server and access it via SMB/CIFS.
If it's going to be read-only for everyone there's no reason why you can't use a single account for everyone. A command like this in the login script could make the mapping for you.
    #net use m: \\<server>\<share> <password> /user:<user> (you may need to specify a path to net.exe)
    Thanks,

  • I accidently used Disk Utility to fix a partition. I cant boot in with any USB drive. Help.

I accidentally used Disk Utility to fix a partition.  It erased it.  I desperately need to restore it.
I have an imac without a cdrom.  How do I create a bootable usb with testdisk as for some bizarre reason it seems impossible to create a bootable usb drive for osx.  I tried GParted and the ultimate boot disk that both have test disk.
I am stumped.  Why can't I boot into my imac with a usb?  I have a mac air that I just cant seem to create a usb drive with testdrive thats bootable.  I even tried rEFit but no luck.
Anyone have an idea? How do I fix my system ?

I have an imac OSX 10.8.
I tried creating a usb drive of testdisk on my mac air so that I could use it to boot into the iMAC and restore the partition table.
    I created it using:
    hdiutil convert -format UDRW -o target.img ~/Desktop/ubcd530.iso
    dd if=./target.img.dmg of=/dev/rdisk1 bs=1m
It did not work.  It would not boot.  I also tried Gnome Partition tool and that did not boot either.  I need my old system as it has important data
    Any tips? Thanks!

  • IMac and Formatting USB Drive Issues

I have an 8GB USB drive that I formatted to MS-DOS FAT using my iMac with 10.6.4 on it. However I now realise that that was a stupid thing to do as now that drive no longer works on Windows no matter what I format it too. I want the pen to allow me to use it on both WIndows and Mac (hence the FAT format) however Windows sees the drive as an unformatted 200MB drive with 7.16GB of unallocated and corrupted space which cannot be formatted.
Windows cannot even attempt to allow me to format it to gain the 8GB back as it is unable to format the space even when its turned into free (empty) space. Luckily OSx can still use it as normal but it just means I've lost a perfectly work USB drive due to an error in OSx.
Can anyone help to to fix this as I really want it to work and I'm stumped as to how.
    Thanks!

It shouldn't matter as I created the files and folders originally on a FAT formatted drive and copied them to my Mac then back at a later date, at which point an error was encountered and prevented me copying folders to the dive (the contents was fine once removed from folders and sub folders).
I believe Apple has fixed this now, however when I formatted the drive my iMac had this problem so I believe this effected the FAT formatted drive to prevent Windows working with it.
Well I have finally managed to fix the drive. I had to format the drive to free space and then plug it into a Windows 7 PC and then delete the free partition and reallocate it again to FAT 32. Window Vista and XP where an able to do this as they say I didn't have permission to do this and asked for a restart. Strange but atleast it finally works on both machines.
