10.7 users disappeared

... from a osx server mac mini machine.
No network accounts available.
Rubbish performance.
Had to set up a new local account (same name as my usual disappeared account).
Lost all of my settings. Constantly 'Keychain not found' windows.
Now this is like the 3rd time I have serious trouble with osx lion server in 6 months. Server software costs only 45$, constantly fixing it costs days and weeks of time.
My good old Leopard G5 was way more stable, and even not that much slower! Too bad I bought a thunderbolt display, otherwise I definitely hooked it up my G5.
Now my question:
How can I do a clean Mountain Lion install, preferably without losing my user settings from my first network account, and without the Server addition? Also without spending more money and time?
I'm really sorry to be very angry at this. I feel like buying a new mac mini server was the stupidest thing I ever did... Apple computers aren't as stable as they used to be.
If I could fix this with a new clean mountain lion install without server and without any track of the server software, I buy a decent non-os-dependent nas for filesharing, as they are meant to do that.
Thanks in advance?

I have the same question.

  • All OD Users disappear

    OK,
There must be something wrong, in the last 3 weeks many of our customers have all their users disappear from open directory.
    Systems affected were...
    Lion, Mountain Lion and Mavericks...
I have found all systems come back after running this... with server app closed and WG manager...
Not sure why this is happening all of a sudden...
    open terminal type sudo -s
    put your password in...
paste this (the sudo commands are not strictly required after sudo -s )
    sudo launchctl unload /System/LIbrary/LaunchDaemons/org.openldap.slapd.plist
    diskutil repairPermissions /
    sudo db_recover -cv -h /var/db/openldap/openldap-data/
    sudo /usr/libexec/slapd -Tt
    sudo db_recover -cv -h /var/db/openldap/authdata/
    sudo /usr/libexec/slapd -Tt
    sudo launchctl load /System/LIbrary/LaunchDaemons/org.openldap.slapd.plist
    then launch server app...
check OD and then your users should pop back in...

I was wondering the same thing.
I read in the manual that this feature only works if you are using the Basic Server set up.
    But i might be wrong.
If you use Bonjour it seems to populate the list with everyone.
I would also like to know if it is possible to automatically add everyone to the list.
Maybe this can be acheived by a prefrence roll out?
Hopefuly someone here with more knowlege than me in OS X server will be able to help

  • Mac User Disappearing

Hi there, i have an odd question: I experience an massive drop of mac user traffic to my sites over the last 18 mounth, especially the last 3/4 mounth. Up to 85% been lost since mid 2011 with an avrage of 13/15.000 a day to about 1500 !!! Mac user must be disappearing in there 1000s a week/day for what reason ??? iOS hype? All my development and sites are in good practice, clean coded, and world wide reconiced( included sevel number 1s on apple.com Dashboard download site...) - I generated more then 10mil of downloads over the years and now it is completly dead - What happen?

First, sort out all of your files from the trash. And take them out of the trash. Then make sure you don't need anything thats in the trash and empty and trash. Maybe the items appear in the trash because you accidently deleted them.

  • Users Disappeared from Workgroup Manager

All I see is the admin user. All Users and Groups are gone.
Strange thing is that I can still view the LDAP tree from another machine and see all the users and groups. Command line access to the Kerberos system also shows the users existing there as well. LDAP and login authentication is working just fine. Searches against the Directory also work from AddressBook on client machines on the network...
If I add a new user via WGM, that user will appear as expected. I also see that new user in LDAP and Kerberos.
I cannot create a user in WGM with one of the existing usernames either. I have also tried an Archive and Restore of the Open Directory data. Still only admin showing.
Any ideas? I'd like to get these users back and viewable so they are selectable in setting permissions/access for other services...

Update. From the backup I just made, I can see all of the users in the backup.ldif file. Is there a way I can import them back into Open Directory?
One other strange thing. If I go to the Settings tab in Server Admin, and into Access, I can see some of the users listed as their apple-generateduid value - not as their usernames.
This leads me to believe there was a linking thread that was broken somewhere. Strange. Very strange.

  • Shared Services Users Disappear from Groups

We have Native Groups in Shared Services that we added users from our MSAD directory to. Yesterday we found that the groups no longer have these users in them and IT did say they did some moves in the directory over the weekend. But I'm wondering if that would really cause SS to drop all the users from the groups like this.
Basically, no one is able to log in although we are testing adding users back to the groups and think that's working.
I just don't want to have to re-create our groups anytime our MSAD is updated.
I'd appreciate any help in understanding this better,
    Paul

Our MSAD administrators moved some OU's around one day and it caused a lot of problems for us since our Shared Services MSAD configuration setting for "User DN" had all the OU's hard coded or what have you. I had to change them to the same that the AD folks had changed them to, then restart everything.
So on the native side I can see how if they moved OU's around that could throw off what you had done. There's a utility which I've been too scared to use (probably harmless but I can't afford any mishaps) which tells Shared Services to search for MSAD changes and to force them through Shared Services, which is probably a nice thing to do once in a while especially when MSAD OU's are moved around. SS does not automatically poll for that type of change but you should be able to automate this.
There's an updatenativedir utility that you can read up on which might help. Don't forget to do backups first of all the security-related databases & files, etc. first.
Perhaps someone reading this is comfortable running UPDATENATIVEDIR and can help provide better guidance, if that's the issue here.

  • Disappearing user permission

    Hi
Yesterday I was called by one our sharepoint user and he told me that he does not have access to a folder from library. The day before he had access to this folder. To find out what happed with user permission I ran Security Audit Report on Sharepoint and
did not find some security modification for this folder. That folder has broken permission .  Could you tell me what could cause user disappearing from folder permision ??
    We use Sharepoint 2010 SP2.
    Thanks

    You may have:
1- An automated agent reseting permissions (a software, a script...)
    2- A corrupted NTFS object
3- Another administrator on your company (maybe he's created a thread to report misteriously permissions appearing)
Either way, auditing permission changes will do the trick. Proceed as follows:
1- Enable auditing for oject access (secpol.msc or via policy)
2- In the folder's security tab click on advanced, auditing.
3- Click on Add, type Everyone and click OK.
4- In Apply onto, select "this folder only"
5- Check "change permissions" for successful and failed.
    6- OK
Permission changes will appear in security event log.

  • Not all users are displayed for log on after a reboot or startup...

Problem summary: Not all users are displayed for log on after a reboot or startup...
This problem only occurs after a fresh start-up or restart. The only users displayed are the initial (admin user) and "Guest". Two other (non-admin) users are not shown for log on.
To work around this problem and get them to log on we have to log on as the admin user, then we can see the other users in the Fast User Switching menu (top right-hand corner of the screen), listed under the current logged on user. After selecting the non-admin user we can log in and use the laptop as normal.
If we lock the screen, use fast user switching or log out all users; all users are available for log in, until a reboot is done; at which point the non-admin users disappear again and we have to log in as the admin user and use fast user switching again.
The laptops are both brand new MacBook Airs. The initial configuration of Mac OS X Yosemite was done using the Apple ID of the purchaser (parent) and then the OS was patched, immediately, through the App store (no further updates available as of the date of this posting). After this Family Sharing was activated and new users set up for the two children who will be using these laptops.
Has anybody else experienced this problem with Yosemite?
    Cheers,
    David.

    David,
Users not enabled for FileVault unlock are only able to log into the computer after an unlock-enabled user has started or unlocked the drive. Once unlocked, the drive remains unlocked and available to all users, until the computer is restarted.
    FileVault has to be On.
To Enable the users to be able to unlock FileVault Go to:
System Preferences > Security & Privacy > FileVault ( Tab ) > Click the Lock in the bottom left > Put in your administrator password > Should see an option to Enable Users > Enable User.
    Hope that helps,

  • Need to know how to better manage revolving users in a group

I have a new Beehive Online group set up for a external partner collaboration. Members of the group are only from Oracle or that external partner. While the BHO group is new, the collaboration has been in place for a long time (since 2007). Initially at Sun Microsystems, and now Oracle.
In my description here... when I say "collaboration" you can translate that to roughly equivalent to "BHO Group"....
The nature of the collaboration is that both companies move people to/from the collaboration, depending on the work in progress. I'm not saying there are changes daily, but there can be changes every month or so. It also happens that people working on the collaboration may be moved from it for many months or longer, and then get moved back to the collaboration at a later time. Ie, the may revolve in and out of the collaboration. Trouble is, when they are moved from the collaboration there is no guarantee that they ever get moved back to it. When a person is not part of the collaboration, their access to collaboration info is taken away.
So my problem is understanding how to manage this better in BHO.
I need to allow a user to be removed from a group, with the possibility (but not certainty) of adding them again.
-- my understanding that delete user would then require SysAd intervention to add them back.
-- I also am not clear on whether deleting the user affects their other group memberships.
I tried to find out more about locking a user
-- but it seems like that affects more then the group.
Whats the recommended way to deal with this?
    Thx!

I tried deleting the "verified" user using the group creation/manage tool.
    - click "View members"
    - select the checkbox next to the user
    - click the button "Delete (non-Verified Users)"
Doing that, the user is not removed AND I get an error message in red at the top of the page that says:
'Only selected non-"Verified" member(s) have been deleted. Go to https://beehiveonline.oracle.com/BOLAdmin.html to delete "Verified" users'
So I went to the Admin tool:
    - selected my group,
    - selected the user from the list
    - clicked the "Delete User" button above the list.
Got the warning pop-up about the user needing to be added back by SysAd, ignored it and clicked "OK".
Got a success pop-up with all kinds of internal response tracking stuff in it. Clicked "OK"
And the user is gone from the group in the Admin tool. HOWEVER, the user still shows up in the group list in the group create/manage tool.
Will the user disappear from that list? If not, the list would be misleading.
    Thx!

  • "find" process User =nobody [?], using up to 90% of CPU = G5Quad [??? !]

This one is for the PPC G5 Quad pros:
Had been working for hours on my Mac Pro (different machine, I know) with my networked G5 Quad supposedly idling in the background.
The only open applications on the G5 Quad are Adobe Photoshop CS4 and Adobe Bridge CS4, the main reason for my keeping the G5 at this point, because of vital plug-ins that are not Intel-compatible and are absolutely irreplaceable and mandatory.  (I do have Ps CS5 and CS6 on the Mac Pro.  Both aforementioned applications had no open documents.  I have not actually used then in about six weeks, so the chance of Bridge building or rebuilding caches id very low.
Alerted by a sudden, very substantial increase of fan and liquid pump activity in my essentially idle G5 Quad, I switched the shared monitors inputs to it and was not surprised by the temperatures, almost all showing no more than 49ºC/121º.
Launched the Activity Monitor, which was showing a Process named "find" owned by a User named "nobody" using up to 90º% of the CPU column.
Terminated said process, only to see it become active again a short time (few minutes) later.
While typing this post, with interruptions, (20 minutes or so) the "nobody" user disappeared, as did the "find" process. some 15 minutes later, the fan and pump activity ended, returning to the G5's normal vigorous hum.
It has been running normally for about 30 minutes now, with very quiet sound levels.
Obviously, I'm mystified because all of this is above my pay grade.
I have a bunch of questions:
1.— Why on Earth is/was there a user named "nobody" working my machine so hard?  What  or who can it be?
2.— What is a "find" process, especially on a supposedly idle machine?
2.— Any chance my computer has been hacked and overtaken by a "third party"?
    3.— Should I be worried?   I am.
4.— What steps would you recommend I take at this point?
Thanks in advance to all.  I look forward to hearing from old Apple forum friends. 

  • File Sharing Shared Folder Users

I have added a shared folder of a FireWire drive I have permanently plugged-in. I want to share this with my other computer so I have turned on file sharing. When I add a user I can ad the other computer fine. But it wont stay. Once I exit system preferences the user disappears. The added share folder stays but I can't add users. Does someone have a solution for this?
    Thanks

I think I am having the same problem as you. I share a folder in Sharing Preferences Pane and then click the plus to add a share only user account, type the username and password, click "create account" and the account doesn't show up in the list of accounts with privileges. I am actually having this problem on both my ibook (g4) and imac (intel).
    Have you found a solution?

  • Users randomly losing capabilities through ichat server

Hi, i have iChat server set up, there are 10 users, capabilities for certain users disappear and i cant find out a reason why, when the capabilities go they lose the ability to send a file through iChat, i can move the user out of the group that they are in on the server then back in again, and this will temporarily solve the problem but only sometimes, i can also remove the buddy from the list and then re add and re authorise and this seems to solve the problem temporarily but only sometimes, other times a reboot fixes it, but other times not, it seems to be random who gets the problem, im wondering if anyone else experiences this, ive gone as far as deleting all users and resetting the ichat server up from scratch, but to no avail, can anyone help me?
    Thanks
    Rob

    Now this is very interesting!
I've the same problems, i posted a while ago in the iChat forum. Due to some circumstances and priorities I haven't posted in the server discussions.
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2580592&tstart=0
Now (the reason for searching discussions right now) there is a very odd thing, which I think is related to this problem.
I've stopped the iChat server, but users are still able to connect, off course not able to chat with each other. Server Admin logs when users are connecting, and tell me that there are users connected. iChat however is stopped.
    Here's my serveradmin output:
    jabber:state = "STOPPED"
    jabber:readWriteSettingsVersion = 1
    jabber:logPaths:PROXY_LOG = "/private/var/jabberd/log/proxy65.log"
    jabber:logPaths:MUCSTDLOG = "/var/jabberd/log/mu-conference.log"
    jabber:logPaths:JABBER_LOG = "/var/log/system.log"
    jabber:proxyState = "RUNNING"
    jabber:currentConnections = "35"
    jabber:currentConnectionsPort1 = "32"
    jabber:currentConnectionsPort2 = "3"
    jabber:pluginVersion = "100.1"
    jabber:serviceMode = "NOTIFICATION"
    jabber:domainName = "ichat.mydomain.nl"
    jabber:mucState = "RUNNING"
    jabber:servicePortsAreRestricted = "NO"
    jabber:servicePortsRestrictionInfo = emptyarray
    jabber:hosts:arrayindex:0 = "ichat.mydomain.nl"
    jabber:setStateVersion = 1
    jabber:startedTime = "2011-02-24 10:30:30 +0100"
    jabber:jabberdState = "RUNNING"
A while ago I also noticed this:
We have a receptionist who handles incoming calls, she uses the Jabber list to see if persons are available. She told me that it was inaccurate. Persons who have set there status to Meeting… while here list told Available.
As far as I can see, my configuration looks similar to yours (execpt I have no local firewall running)

  • Username 'disappeared' from System Preferences List

System is a MAC Mini with 8GB of memory and 250GB SSD with a 4TB Pegasus R4 subsystem.  It is running Mavericks 10.9.4 and Server 3.1.2.  A month or so ago one of its non-admin users disappeared from the System Preferences User list and from the server app's Users list. The user is unable to connect  to the server. When I tried to recreate the user I was told that the shortname is already in use. Changing the name of the folder in /Users doesn't change anything.
I need to either regain access to the username or delete the username so I can create it again.
    Can anyone help me?

The following command will output a list of local users. Is the one in question included?
    dscl . -list /Users

  • LWE - Problems to see the service working to the users

    Hi to all,
    I’m trying to implement LWE on ESS1.0, EP7, ERP2005 ECC6.0.
To do that I follow this post: https://www.sdn.sap.com/irj/sdn/wiki?path=/display/profile/initialsettingstobedoneforLifeandWork+events&
I released all the objects, after I went to GP Design View and went to see the instantiation id (LWE Events in ESS). This is different from the backend but I have a problem:
When I change the Resource ID in the backend to be the same like in the portal, the process to the user disappear, If I don’t change the resource ID I get the error “Cannot retrieve process template: No active version of the given development object exists”
In the default roles I inserted the user in the Overseer and my user on the Administrator
If I test directly in the Design View the process work properly.
    I’m missing something!!
    Can anyone help me?

  • PDC showing no users connected

Trying to set up a PDC here, but I've run into a couple of brickwalls.
We've got 1 OD master and one OD rep. We are running a PDC on the master and a BDC on the rep. Both PDC and BDC are configured the same.
    No guest access
    unlimited clients
    authentication NTLMv2 & Kerb/NTLMv1
Registered with WINS server (our primary DNS server)
    enabled virtual homes
I am able to join the domain created by my PDC.
I am able to log into the domain, but in the Server Admin Connections view for the PDC, I see no connections. Occassionally, my user will show up upon initial login or logout, but user disappears from the Connections view after about a minute. When the user does show up, the time connected is always 00:00.
I have also found that there are periods of time that the WinXP host I'm testing off of can't see the domain and I can't authenticate in. Sometimes if I wait 5-10 minutes I can get back in, but sometimes I have to restart the PDC. There's nothing particular in the logs that tell me the PDC is down.
Any ideas as to what's up?

    A little more strangeness...
I have two users that I have no problems logging into the domain with. All other users get an error that the domain is not available.
I look in /var/log/samba/log.smbd and I can see the two users who login, but what I don't see are any entries for those users who get the domain is not available error.

  • Server.app does not authenticate network admin users

Running fresh installation of Lion Server 10.7.3. I'm logged in as the original, local, administrator.
I open Server.app and successfully log in to the local machine with the local administrator creditials. I create a networked user allowed to administer the machine. Close Server.app window.
Attempt to log in as the new networked administrator. I get a message about using the server's self-signed certificate. I click accept, then the log-in shakes it head, won't let network admin log-in. Repeated attempts to log in do not show the certificate warning -- the log-in fails every time, though.
Attempt to log is as local admin, works OK.
    How to fix?

Hi Stefan, I have the Server app problem here on my Xserve 2009 and it happened after about 14 days of working correctly. No users or groups(850 network) show in the panes other than the two local admin users on the server. The +/- buttons are greyed out also. If you enter some letters for a search in Users/Groups it will actually display the network users containing the letters and eventually it populates the window with network users up to the usual 500+ limit but refresh and they all disappear again. Thinking back before it happened I used WGM to add a new user instead of Server and it was shortly after when the users "disappeared" and the+- buttons greyed out. I dont have much confidence in Server app at the moment and im just glad WGM/SA is still in operation. I agree with Danny_Sch that Server app starts to act strangely after using WGM
WGM acts as usual with all my 850 users showing from the OD and Server admin shows all my services running ok. All users can log in and out fortunately at the moment. This happened initially when I migrated to Lion and I had to use my OD archive demoting and promoting to master to get it to work but I dont want to have to rebuild the whole thing again as we have very limited downtime to do it in a big institution etc. I'm trawling the net looking for a fix but no definitive answer. Has anyone reported this as a bug to Apple I wonder?
