10.8.4 installation made computer unusable, please offer help.
Hello guys,
could you please help me on what to do as Im lost here ;(
I was installing 10.8.4 and went to use the toilet. When I got back to the installation I noticed that I had my computer off. So I wasnt sure if the installation was completed or not.
Now the computer keeps restarting.
Ive resetted SMC and PRAM but it didnt help and the computer still keeps restarting.
Is my only option to reinstall the system from recovery disk? I have my time machine back up in another country so that is not an option.
If i do reinstall the system, will it keep the settings?
I do have another disc here with time machine backup but its about 3 months old. Is there a way just to take the system out of it whilst keeping everything untouched and my stuff will remain there? (applications etc)
Or any other suggestions, please? Thank you
Boot into the Recovery disk and run disk utility to repair the disk and permissions. See if that will get you over the boot hump.

I dropped my external HD on my hard tile floor and now the drive is not working properly. I have tried a repair in Disc Ultilies with First Aid with no such luck. It started to work then I got a message "Filesystem verify or repair failed" about 3-4 minutes into the first aid repair disk. Its a simple tech pro drive 1TB.Unfortunately, a drive that has been mechanically damaged by a drop and can't be repaired using Disk Utility probably can't be fixed any other way either. The best you can hope for is to salvage as much data from the drive as possible using one of the data recovery utilities linked below, and then replace the drive.

"Cannot unmount harddrive" Can you please offer help/advice?

I run Tiger 10.4.11 on a first generation MacBook (Core 2 Duo) with a 160 GB HD split into 2 partitions. Using SuperDuper I made a bootable clone of my main partition on an external LaCie HD.
While booted from the clone on the external LaCie HD I tried to repartition the laptop's harddrive so that it will contain only one partition. The process failed several times due to this error: "unable to unmount partition 1".
I used DiskWarrior 4 to verify, repair and replace directories on both partitions of the laptop and everything seems to be fine according to DiskWarrior. Nevertheless, while booted from the external HD, one of the 2 partitions on the laptop still cannot be unmounted.
Can anyone offer any advice/suggestion?

As promised, here is the update:
1. tried to switch off Spotlight...no effect.
2. tried to umount using terminal.... "could't unmount disk0...- error 49153
3. tried to unmount using original OS X disk1-->Disk Ulitily--> erased the partition--result: OK
Now, with the MacBook Hard Drive erased and partitioned to only one partition, I booted from the Clone on the external HD and copied this clone back to the MacBook harddrive.
So far so good... everything on the laptop works, etc.
Now, when I assign the Clone on the external HD ( let's call it: MacBook Clone) as startup disk and boot from it, the MacBook HD is again "unmountable" (which is expected since is a clone of the previous system).
The question therefore is: what is it that keeps MacBook HD "in use". How do I find out what are the active programs (perhaps hidden?) that contribute to this situation? I strongly believe this is the underlying problem since I have been cloning back and forth for years and never encountered anything similar.
Do you or anybody reading this post know where should I look or point me in the right direction?

First, restart the Time Capsule by disconnecting the power adapter and reconnecting it. If other devices on the network can see it, you can skip this step.

Click the lock icon in the lower left corner of the window and authenticate to unlock the settings, if necessary. Click the Advanced button, then select the TCP/IP tab in the sheet that drops down. Click Renew DHCP lease.
Try again to back up.
If you still can't, open the Time Machine preference pane and delete the TC from the list of backup destinations. You may have to unlock the settings by clicking the lock icon in order to do this. Then add it back. -

There is a fix; I finally discovered how to clear the Windows 7 xx64 Device Manager's warning of a missing Bluetooth Peripheral device.
Thinking Boot Camp 4.0 would correct thid, I installed it ititially today only to have the warning remain.
The Bluetooth company called Broadcom (you notice the reference during the installation of Boot Camp) offers a BlueTooth "device finder" (my phraseology) that detects all BlueTooth devices in your Apple or PC but withing a Windows operating system; included are Windows 7 , Vista, XP and even 2000 operating systems.
So download the 3 MB file, from Broadcom.com. While your Bluetooth equipment is plugged in to the computer, run the program. The program searches for any BlueTooth peripheral activated equipment and BlueTooth devices that makeup your MacBook Pro, or other Apple or a plain PC computer having a Windows operating system installed. It then downloads the appropriate software required.

In my case, I ran the program, rebooted my MacBook Pro (in Windows 7 x64 and with the new Boot Camp 4.0 installed) and the missing BlueTooth peripheral device indication was eliminated. It took 10 minutes to complete. -

Starting up into Safe Mode does several things:
1 It forces a directory check of the startup volume.
2 It loads only required kernel extensions (some of the items in /System/Library/Extensions).
3 In Mac OS X v10.3.9 or earlier, Safe Mode runs only Apple-installed startup items (such items may be installed either in /Library/StartupItems or in /System/Library/StartupItems; these are different than user-selected account login items).
4 It disables all fonts other than those in /System/Library/Fonts (Mac OS X v10.4 or later).
5 It moves to the Trash all font caches normally stored in /Library/Caches/com.apple.ATS/(uid)/ , where (uid) is a user ID number such as 501 (Mac OS X v10.4 or later).

As I don’t know much about the technical aspects of computers, I don’t really understand the first answer, and it sounds like following it might produce unwanted changes.
But I understand your questions, so I’ll try to answer them;
"loading from any Project" means that I encounter the problem when I’m using a project, possibly after/because I’ve left the Mac on overnight, and/or I’ve made a lot of adjustments, and, once the problem is there, it happens in any other project which I open – the images load then disappear.
I can see images in the Browser, so it only happens in the Viewer(s).
I’m afraid I don’t understand what you mean by: “If you select "Photos" from near the top of the Library tab of the Inspector, does it show you all of your Images?”. I am a newcomer to Aperture, so I don’t know what some of the buttons are for yet, but when I want to look at and adjust my pictures, I import them, as referenced images, then Aperture creates a folder/project in the Library. When I click on that Project (when it’s working properly), all the images appear in the Browser or the Viewers – without me needing to “select Photos from near the top of the Library tab of the Inspector”. I selected it and looked at all the items in the dropdown menu, but none of them seems to offer the option to ‘show all the images’. So I’m not sure how to answer your question except to say that – yes, I can see all the pictures in the Browser or the Viewers (when it’s working properly), but I don’t seem to need to use the Photos button to achieve this.
Did Aperture work before?
Yes it worked ok for a while, but I only purchased it on 24th May.
If I understand correctly, the difference between thumbnail and preview is that the thumbnail is what I see when the “Loading” wheel is turning, and the disappearance of this wheel after a few seconds means that I am now looking at the preview (also, the thumbnail cannot be adjusted).
So I think the problem occurs when the thumbnail has finished loading; the viewer going blank/grey might mean that it is not showing the preview.
But I have not changed the default Preview settings in Aperture Preferences.

I have noticed another problem: I cannot apply the same rating to multiple images: following the instructions, I select a group of contiguous (or non- contiguous) images, choose a selection eg “5stars” using the keyboard, but the stars only appear in the last selected image – even though all the images are still showing as selected.”

That is most likely being caused by a recently discovered problem where SSL security certificates from an issuer in the Netherlands were found to be invalid. Try your download again and hopefully you will be directed to one of the other download mirrors around the planet.

Computer freezes -- PLEASE HELP
Each time a new song starts on my iTunes, about 10 seconds into the song my memory usage for iTunes will shoot up from 53,000K to 85,000K and will cause everything I am doing on my computer to freeze up for about 5-10 seconds. Like I said, this happens for each successive song. I have a 13,000+ song library and did not have this problem with iTunes 4.9 -- I recently updated to 5.0.1 and started experiencing this. So, I tried uninstalling 5.0.1 and reinstalling 4.9, but the same problem was now happening there as well. This is NOT a problem with my hardware, it is more than sufficient to support this usage, and happens even when iTunes is the only program running on the computer. PLEASE HELP, it is very annoying to have to stop what I'm doing and wait for 5 seconds each time a new song starts.
Boot from your original Tiger cd and run Disk Utility Repair Disk from there - it can repair directory problems which can't be fixed from normal Disk Utility.
If that doesn't work, an archive and reinstall of Tiger might be best - it's pretty simple and can save weeks of trying to track down and fix an obscure problem. Just make sure you thoroughly backup first. Check Apple's website for instructions http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=107120. Disconnect all peripherals while you reinstall.
Once Tiger's reinstalled, download the combo update from here http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/ (Note - don't use Software update for this). Re-attach peripherals one-by-one to see if anything is still upsetting Tiger.
I would then recommend you install third party software Macaroni, http://www.atomicbird.com/ to automate the necessary admin tasks needed to keep OSX in tip-top shape.

Oh my gosh I had the EXACT same problem, and for ages I couldn't figure out how to fix it until today. Here's what I did:
First I went onto my computer, opened itunes, and un-installed tumblr, vine and kik. These were the apps I was having problems with (it said I had them on my phone but, like you, they didn't show).
Then I went to the itunes store, searched for each one, and it said I could update them so I did (just FYI: for tumblr a window popped up saying "please click ok to confirm you are 17 years or older", so I did that also)
When I went back to my phone and tried installing them again (still on my computer), it worked!

Unfortunately, I could not work around this and MS said it was by design. I even tried some clever stuff with symbolic link s but to no avail. I simply ended up informing my users to ignore the message and continue. i don't want anyone to be able to browse
the C: drive so I'm leaving the NoViewOnDrives registry key in place. However, there is one possible workaround but for me , it didn't suit:

Is there a way to run a 2005 PreSonus Firebox(with the firewire) to a mid-2011 iMac 0SX 10.7.2? It says its no longer supporting Power PC? Anything I can do without spending more money on new equipment or a new computer? Please help me.
Nevermind, I got it working.
I ended up extracting the new vob within MPEG Streamclip, which gave me an m2v and an aiff audio. I multiplexed those two back together in FFMpegX which gave me a complete VIDEO_TS folder with BUP and IFO files I needed.
