1080p vs iMovie?

I want to buy a FullHD 1080p videocam, but the shopkeeper told me, it's not possible to edit 1080p with iMovie, also some "standard Canon format" is not supported in even FinalCut either. Which FHD cameras (video formats) work with Mac? If not iMovie, I'm ready to go for FinalCut, or else. Any advice?

Indeed for Full HD 1080P files, 50/60 fps in frame rate in progressvie mode is not acceptable by iMovie or FCP. Find an app to help change 50/60 fps to 24/25/30 fps in frame rate. Or use a conversion software to transcode Full HD MTS to Apple Prores with 50/60 fps in progressive mode. I used final mate. You can have a try or use other similar app.

  • Why can't I export my movies at 1080p on iMovie?

Hi. I'm currently using iMovie version 10.0.5 and I can't find a way to export my videos at 1080 pixels, the resolution I want it to be. It seems to be dead set on 720 and I can't find a way to change it, not even when I look in the help menu. Could someone help me please? Thanks.

    Hello there, charliewittke.

  • IMovie 09' Export 1080p Only Viewable In 360p

    Hi,
I am so annoyed right now because of the fact, i've uploaded this video to youtube, and it is only viewable in 360p when I know I exported it to 1080p. I filmed it with my full HD camera, and it was set to full HD when I recorded it, and I exported it to my desktop with the format of 1080p through iMovie. It took ages to upload because of the great quality of the movie on my mbp hence the large file size (1.34GB)
I really want to fix this as soon as possible, I need this in HD.
    Thanks,
    Chris

I had this problem too, after initially being successful with a 1min HD movie.
There is no problem - it's just a delay...
When I shared my video from iMovie (10) as HD it uploads to YouTube but when you first view it, it's in 360p, and there's no option for the resolution above that. But have faith, in the background YouTube is still processing the video for the higher resolutions (assuming your video is in HD).
After a few minutes, revisit YouTube and your video will be there in HD.

  • Imovie won't export 1080p...

Hi Folks, I understand this topic has been discussed before but all previous solutions have not worked for me so, want to see if anyone in 2015 has any new insights. This is a long one, My apologies upfront.
I have footage shot from 3 different cameras: a Canon 5mkII, GoPro Hero 4 Black, and a Sony VG-30. All set to 1080p 24fps....cool?....cool.
The Sony VG30 records in AVCHD which is a friggin nightmare file format. I had a lot of trouble getting a solid conversion to .mov that said I did successfully convert them to usable .mov. I have double checked the files in quicktime to verify that they are all 1080p files. HOWEVER The formats appear to be different. Would this create an issue for a final export?? Here are the specs for each camera:
    - Gopro: GoPro AVC ENcoder, 1920x1080 AAC, 48000 Hz, Stereo (L R)
    - Canon 5dkII: H.264, 1920x1080 Linear PCM, 16 bit little-endian sign... (that's all quicktime shows)
Ok so the Sony VG30, Like i said I had a **** of a time getting a solid conversion, it seemed the longer clips needed a different conversation than the shorter ones, I had to do 3 different conversions to get all the footage into something usable here are the 3 formats:
Sony VG30 AVCHD/MTS Converted  to .mp4 with Adobe Lightroom: AVC Coding, 1920x1080 AAC, 48000 Hz Stereo (L R)
Sony VG30 AVCHD/MTS Converted  to aac.mov with "Free AVCHD to MOV" (from app store): H.264, 1920x1080 AAC, 48000 Hz, Stereo (L R)
Sony VG30 AVCHD/MTS Converted  to prores.mov with "Free AVCHD to MOV" (from app store): Apple ProRes 422, 1920x1080 Linear PCM, 32 bit little-endian floati...(that's all quicktime shows)
Ok so we are on the same page. We have verified that all the files are 1080p.
in iMovie I have a created a black 1920x1080 background as the first clip to start the video. As I understand it, iMovie uses the first clip to determine the movies resolution. additionally the 2nd clip comes from the Canon, which I've never had issues with. So we can rule that out too.
The last thing I did was duplicate the movie and remove all clips from the Sony and GoPro camera. This is where it gets strange. I removed clips one at time, and in between each clip removal I checked the export setting to see if 1080p became available. After removing ALL the sony and Gopro clips, 1080p WAS Available!!!!!
    BUT!!!!!
As this point the only clips in the movie were from the Canon, This is my primary camera and never have an issue like this. Thinking the problem was solved I started adding clips from just the Canon, after adding a few clips i check the export settings again and 1080p is GRAYED OUT!!!! ***!!! only 720p is available.
So this is where I'm at. I have no clue why this thing is stuck at 720p. It defies logic and I'm really stressing out. Any help or insight is greatly appreciated. I'm at a point where I starting from scratch is practically not an option. I'm assuming the formats has something to do with it, If someone could tell me which is the incompatible format, swapping out the clips isn't that bad, but right now, I'd spend hours in trial and error to figure out which clips are the wrong format. It would be a huge help. Thank you in advance!
    --RC

Just an update, on the duplicate movie i made, I deleted all clips EXCEPT the 1920x1080 background image in the first clip position, and the export option is still stuck at 720p!
    unbelievable....
It's clear that the movies inaccessible metadata or preferences are locked up at 720p. Why on earth did they take away "export using quicktime"??? ARGH! so frustrating.

  • If my camcorder records in 1080i, will i have any problems exporting my movie in imovie as 1080p? I read something about interlacing or deinterlacing?

If my camcorder records in 1080i, will i have any problems exporting my movie in imovie as 1080p? I read something about interlacing or deinterlacing?
I also have another question. I can't find an external blu-ray burner for a mac anywhere. How to I simply watch my exported 1080p movie edited in imovie on my hd tv? Apple tv only supports 720p correct? I read that the simplest way to watch it would be to save it on a flash drive then use a playstation 3 to watch the movie. Does anyone else have any other ideas? Thanks in advance

For 1080p via iMovie '11, just remember to optimize video for “Full – Original Size”.
The latest Apple TV supports HD.
I've seen low cost Blu-Ray DVD players for less than USD$100.00. I've also seen reasonably priced external BR for Mac...try OWC, as one example.

  • Idvd / imovie movie quality is very poor on my hd tv

I have a sony cx700 hd camera, which will shoot in 1080p, but in order to import into imovie 11 I had to change it to 720p on the camera.  I just finished my movie, added transitions, music and stills, burned it with idvd and the quality when played on my hd tv is terrible.  Is there any way to import 1080p into imovie 11, would that solve my problem of poor quality on my tv?  I am doing my video editing on a mac book pro that was upgraded to lion.
    Thanks,
    Tricia

    Hi
Yes there are several layers to this question.
    • HD TV and Your Mac Screen has very high resolution
    • iDVD (and other DVD Authoring programs) can only do DVD Standard -
and it is interlaced SD-Video in PAL (25fps) or NTSC (29.97fps)
    • Using a Video editor that can not deliver this but just 50% (every second line in the picture) will not help at all
and they are iMovie'08 or 09 or 11. I use iMovie HD6 or FinalCut as they deliver 100%
    • Using "Share to iDVD" in any version of iMovie has a BAD effect on my movies so I do instead
    a. iMovie'08 to 11 - Share to Media Browser - and as LARGE - not HD or other resolutions as this too makes result suffer. In iDVD I import these movies from Media button/Movies down to the right.
    b. Movie HD6 - Just close it and drop the Movie icon into iDVD
Now iMovie can not render - and iDVD does this so much better.
In iDVD - Save as a DiskImage and test this first to see if result got any better.
If You need HD - then Roxio Toast™ including BD-component can be a way but You need a Blu-Ray Player to be able to view.
+ BD on standard DVDs (max 20-30 minutes) - Still un-playable on standard DVD-players
+ Blu-Ray Disk and BD-Burner (also extra cost)
I play back my BD-DVDs on a PlayStation 3 - They look as good as it can be.

  • 24p vs 60p for Editing in iMovie

I am getting ready to purchase a fairly high end Sony handycam that supports 24p up to 60p.  I have heard a lot about 24p being cinematic but many tout 60p.  My question is which will give better results for me if:
I import and edit my movies in 1080p with iMovie
I then put the end result in iTunes and play the movie on my HD TV via a new AppleTV
Will one mode look better than the other considering the above?  Are there advantages or disadvantages?

    Mike Delaney wrote:
    …  I have heard a lot about 24p being cinematic …
that is one of the unstopable legends in the net ......
24p is for celloloid, a compromise of quality vs. costs, created in the 1920s, 18 inch per sec of 35mm film.
what has the frame-rate to do with 'film-look'?
    first hand - nothing.
'film' look is based upon color, contrast, depth of field and motion-blurr - which IS hard to accomplish, when frame-rate is 60fps. you can acomplish a film-look with any frame-rate ....
2nd: video/TV/Youtube are based upon 25/30fps ... so, any 'cinematic' source needs a) slight speed-up or b) a complicated, pulldown, quality lossy process ...
if you don't publish your recordings in the next Cineplex, stay with 25/30.
60p-recording is nice in a 25/30 project, 'cause you can create super smooth slowmos.
not every delivery media or monitor supports 60p ......

  • IMovie not importing full 1080 resolution

I've notices that when I import my 1080 HD videos that i've recorded on my iPhone to iMovie, it converts the video to 720p. I don't see a setting that says tells iMove that I want it to import the full quality. I've go the latest version of iMovie 10.0.2 and am very confused why this is not automatically doing this for me. Any suggestions would be fully appreciated.

The resolution of an iMovie 10 project cannot be set manually but is determined by the first clip to be added to the project.   If your first clip is 1080p then the project should be 1080p.  ( iMovie 10 on the Mac definitiely supports 1080p)
Try creating a new project and putting a single 1080p clip into it.  then select the project and click Info (above the viewer).  It should read 1080p HD.   If it reads 720p then your clip must be 720p.
Assuming it reads 1080p you can then copy all of your project that was set to 720p to this new project and it should remain set at 1080p.  You can remove that first clip if you need.  The shared movie will be 1080p.

  • Panasonic TM700 recording in 1080/50p (PAL) - how do I get onto a MAC?

    Hi
I have just purchased a Panasonic TM700 and recorded a few test shots in 1080/50p.... only to discover that neither I-movie or Final Cut Express can import the recordings.
The Panasonic software provided is only PC friendly (and I'm not going there!) so has anyone got any suggestions as to how I can get them onto my MAC...
    Many thanks
    Steve

There will be several qualifications to my answer, because I work with 60p NTSC, and I'm not sure if PAL is significantly different or not. The main issue I think will be if the native video files are .mts.
When you connect the camera you should be able to navigate to the native files with this path: Camera Mem/AVCHD/BDMV/Stream/.mts. Copy the .mts files.
I use a program called Clipwrap to convert these files to .mov files. A free version limited to 1 minute clips is available for download.
Once you have the .mov files, you can import them to iMovie.
The other way to get the files on to your computer is record a small bit of video with HA 1080i setting. With that small bit, along with your 1080p clips, iMovie will allow the function of "Archive All" which will get the camera memory contents on to your computer, but you still have to convert the mts files with Clipwrap, in order to work on them.

  • How can I export 1080i in best possible quality for internet streaming?

Sorry, I'm not too knowledgeable about this but I have Final Cut 6.0.4 and use/captured in HD-1080i. What's the best possible way to export this in great quality for internet streaming? What dimensions should I use? Any help would be extremely appreciated. Thank you!

ok i used h.264 main profile with 10 mbps and i am using multipass and size is 1280x720. i tried 24 and 30 key frames. quality is still lower
iv been experimenting on a 1.5 minute video to save time.  I imported the project from imovie into fcpx and changed nothing.  looking at the file that was created by imovie for the same video it is 1280x720 and uses codecs h.264 and aac the file size is 115 mb the extension is .mov and the color profile is HD (1-1-1) and total bitrate is 10,512 kbps. and the quality is the minimum acceptable for me.
The file i created using your settings above in compressor 4 is 118 mb and of lower quality. codecs used are h.264, aac, and Hint (not sure what hint is but noticed it isn't used with the .mov file) color prile is the same as above. total bitrate is 10,405 kbps.
Im not arguing that compressor 4 should be able to surpass imovie but so far i have only been able to do it by making the file size rediculous (>50 gb for 30 minutes).  I created a movie that was recorded with the same camera (25 mbps) 1080p 1920x1080. imovie made this 40 minute video just under 3 gb and with the same quality as the movie i am experimenting with.
There is a differnce between theory and practice. SO FAR THE RESULTS I AM SEEING IS THAT IMOVIE IS SUPERIOR IN QUALITY TO SIZE RATIO. imovie has very few options but the hd setting has surpassed what i have been able to do with fcpx.
i am willing to try any settings that anyone sugests.
personally i think i will try to export the movie at max quality then take the super large file to my windows laptop and convert to avi.  as in the past i have had much success with that format using divx. i realize that that is not the best method but i don't really want to spend hours re editing this video with imovie since the source footage is about 10 hours.
Thanks for trying still_learning but i am afraid you are still learning.

  • Black stage curtain is a mess of macro blocks

I am creating DVDs for my child's elementary school. I shot ceremony in the gym/auditorm with teachers speaking at podium in front of a black stage curtain. On the final DVD the black curtain is a mess of dancing macro blocks.
Shot with GH3 in MOV format, 72Mbps. I'm editing in iMovie. Footage looks fine in iMovie. I have exported as 1080p from iMovie. After creating a DVD with iDVD, the black curtain is basically a big macro block.
I know I'm using consumer tools but I can't understand why these black curtains are getting so crushed. The rest of the frame looks fine--teacher at podium, students, etc.
Is there anything I can do to get a better encode? Would compressor do a better job?

Sorry if I was not clear enough.
DVD is as Standard - ONLY - Interlaced SD-Video Quality
No DVD authoring program can change this
The Final Quality on the Video-DVD - can be this or Worse and that can well depend on authoring program used - but also
    - Some very cheap (free) authoring programs seems to skip the Interlaced bit - BAD BAD final quality
    - And How much You sqees in toa DVD also results in decreased quality e.g. Roxio Toast (a very good tool) - can do " Make it to fit the DVD" and if You try toput in ten hours of Video onto a SL-DVD (Yes it can do this) - the resulting DVD also is so BAD it is barely worth to view.
    - Data rate transfere - High = high quality
    - If Calculation made in several iterations = Higher quality (Pro Quality in iDVD) = also results in a better Video-DVD
    - Brand of DVD used - Memorex, NoName etc cheap media usually do not work as Video-DVDs (Data-DVDs may be) - I use Verbatim
    - Type of DVD used - DVD+/-RW usually do not work or results in Bad to Strange (colored) DVDs, DVD+R only on Newer DVD-players - I use DVD-R
    - AND: Single Layer (SL-DVD) usually work better than DL-DVDs
    - Encoding version used (in iDVD) - Pro Quality (if movie + menu has a total duration of > 45 minutes) are my choise
    - Free Space on Start-up Hard Disk - Never less than 25Gb on my Mac - and if HD-material is used I secure 4 - 5 times more. Yes this too can give quality loss and especially so when running very low.

  • 1080p Support from iMovie

    Folks,
I have am the proud owner of a new Sony HD camcoder and after much debate on the forums I am pleased to report that I am easily able to import the files to iMovie and edit them just as I did with my old DV camera.
However, when I go to the 'Share to iTunes' option I am only able to publish a 'Large - 960x540' file to synchrnise with my Apple TV - whihc is the 1st generation model.  Why am I unable to publish a 720p or 1080p file to the same?  The radio button in iMovie presents this for use through a computer only - but I was fully under the impression that Apple TV could support HD content, and I do have an HD TV so not sure what the issue is here?
    Thanks.

    matthewfox1972 wrote:
OK - getting there slowly :-)
I can record at 1080p, 1080i or 720p.  Additionally I appear to have the ability to choose between 50i or 50p - although the latter will not import into iMovie anyway.  Are these settings the equivalent of what you're stating as FPS - i.e. 50i would equal 25fps?
Assuming that the Apple TV technology improves, should I just be shooting at the highest quality level available to me and then re-publishing the movie as and when my Apple TV can cope with the higher definition?
Tricky to know which format to shoot when you have options!
Personally - because you can never go back and shoot it again - I take photos and record video at the best resolution possible.  However that can place demands on storage, hardware and software - especially if software can't handle the format.
If you know you want 720p video for AppleTV it'd be tempting to shoot 720p from the off if imovie can handle an import - but you can't get true 1080p in the future from that footage if you want to.
Presumably this is a solid state camcorder - mine is still video based.
Th problem using Share from iMovie is that it won't offer above 960x540 for AppleTV1 from memory (unless perhaps footage was 24 fps, but it will handle 25fps anecdotally).  For 720p you'd need to custom export.
The i and p refer to interlacing or progressive scan mode.
The 50i setting sounds like 50 fields per sec but as it is interlaced only half the vertical data is captured per frame, so in theory you'd be getting 25fps of full frame data. I would expect the 50p mode to be 50 frames pers sec but check your manual.
My camcorder is older and doesn't sport 50p modes.  I don't think iMovie handles 50p at all, I may be wrong.
One bad thing with iMovie is that it did at one point start discarding alternate fields ofinterlaced material as a shortcut instead of properly deinterlacing - I'm not sure if that's still true.
Winston is the video expert here, hopefully he'll chime in.
I know what the units support and roughly how to get there but Winston does a lot of video regularly.
Also ask on the iMovie forum directly for advice on the shooting modes and compatibility.

  • Yahoo......got my new iMovie 11 today and it support 1080p

Yahoo......got my new iMovie 11 today and it support 1080p export
    ok Apple...where the blu-ray 1080p burner...please....

This is a great comment. 1080P seems to be pretty much the standard now on HD TV sets so it was great to see iMovie finally supporting 1080P. The question now is how to actually get that 1080P resolution on your TV set. You can't burn it onto a DVD of course. You could upload the 1080P video to Youtube but again, how do you view it on your TV? I have an (old) Apple TV and that can connect to Youtube but it won't support 1080P, only 720P.
Supposedly, an XBOX 360, which I also have, will play video in 1080P. Microsoft has their own issues and even though my XBOX has a 250GB hard drive, there is no way to get any home video footage onto that hard drive. Microsoft doesn't support that.
    Thoughts anyone?

  • 1080P movie imported into iMovie at optimised 920x540 but is oddly finalised at 1080p?

    Hi.
I have a video shot in 1080p which I imported into iMovie from my camcorder using the optimised setting (920x540px). I edited the movie and now want to finalise it. But I'm wondering why when I click finalise the project it says it's doing so in 1080p?
I assumed when it imported the project it did so at 920x540px and would have disgarded the additional data 1080p data.
    What's happening?
    Thanks!

Just had a thought. Something AppleMan1958 said in another post.
Is this because iMovie also imports the original 1080p file into the Camera Originals folder? So when I finalise the edited project it does with the original 1080p footage?

  • IMovie HD6 Importing 1080p video as 1080i

I have a Canon Powershot S100 that shoots Full Hd at 1080p with 24 frames as .mov. The only import option in iMovie HD 6 for 1080 is 1080i. So I imported the 1080p as 1080i and exported the finished project as a "Full Quality" .mov file. The exported .mov file shows the frame rate has been changed to 30. The video seems to look fine, but is there something I'm not seeing in the conversion from 24 to 30 frames.

    Hello wendeebee,
When you launch the video camera and pull down the top Menu, what is the aspect ratio showing?
When you play back the videos on your computer after importing, what program are you using to view it?
