1440 footage in 1920 timeline

hi, have started an edit that is primarily 7d 1920x1080 progressive footage. and 1920x1080 sequence ( i am uk)
I have a small amount of footage that is hdv interlaced converted to prores 1440x1080
its in the sequence but needs rendering all the time.
whats best option to speed up my workflow and get best end result?
do i continue working and add deinterlace filter and render in the 1920 sequence or convert the footage in compressor, resizing to 1920 ( do i need to use frame controls if i do this?) and deinterlacing in compressor also or just resize in compressor and deinterlace in fcp with natress ?
final project is to dvd and most likely blueray to.
many thanks
ade

I'd convert it to 1920 progressive in Compressor. Yes, use frame controls. If you resize in Compressor the interlacing is getting messed up anyway so you should make it progressive there. Rather than reinterlacing in Compressor and deinterlacing it in FCP.

  • Rendering HD footage in the timeline

I'm editing some TV spots shot on a Panosonic HD Varicam in 720p24. I selected the "Easy Setup" for both 720p30 and 720p24, but when i drag footage to the timeline, it has to be rendered. I remember this happening to me before, but I forget how I fixed it. It might have been something to do with the pulldown. However that was in 4.5 and in FCP 5 I can't find any pulldown options. No matter what combination's of capture/sequence/easy setup options I try, I still have to render all footage in the timeline. Any suggestions?
    Thanks

I've sort of figured it out but am still a little confused.
The EASY SETUP I used was 720p30. Therefore the capture frame rate was 30, the sequence frame rate was 30, the compressor was DVCPRO HD 720p60, and the playback output video fram rate was 60. Therefore all the default EASY SETUP 730p30 settings were in order. Then I noticed in the Browser window the "Vid Rate" for my captured video was 59.94, even though I had used EASY SETUP 740p30. When I changed the sequence frame rate to 59.94, voila no rendering needed. However I can't play more than a few seconds without getting the Dropped Frames warning.
So why when I selected EASY SETUP 720p30 did it capture as 59.94 (720p60?)
Why am I getting the dropped frames if it is the correct frame rate.
I know the camera might be involved. It's one of those Panasonic $75000 Varicams but the camera operator said the video was shot in 720p24 and the producer told me to cut in 720p30.
    Any info?
    Cheers

Why do I loose rendered footage from my timeline in Premiere Elements 10, after saving my project on exit! When I reopen the project, the timeline needs rendering again! Can anyone help me with this problem, it's driving me mad!
Is there a fix, or is it a problem with settings in the program! Any help, greatly appreciated! Mike's Media.

    Mike,
    Welcome to the forum.
Along with the answers to Steve's questions, please tell us about your computer's I/O sub-system, i.e. your computer's HDD's, and especially where the Project, the media and the PrE Scratch Disks are stored. For instance, if everything is on C:\, or perhaps the Project, media and Scratch Disks are all on an external USB 2.0 HDD.

  • 1080 footage in 720 timeline

    Hi,
If I drop my 1080 footage into 720 timeline, will that give me an option of scaling the footage up a bit without sacrificing too much of a quality?

cool.  If I already edited it in 1080 timeline can I now copy everything in the timeline and drop it into a new 720 timeline or do I need to start from scratch?

  • HDV 1440 x 1080 on timeline to dvd compliant MPEG-2?

Gents, I need your help, suggestions and advice once more.
About 2 months ago, I belatedly and finally entered the HDV world by purchasing a Canon XH-A1s which all in all I’m very pleased with. Due to time constraints, limited processing resources and the complexity of the project involved, it was only earlier this month that I submitted an HDV program to be aired on local access cable.
Well, it turns out that I was under the false impression that their fairly new server that feeds their broadcast system could handle MPEG-2 files with HDV content! Instead, it’s very picky & not the case. Their head tech guru wrote me an e-mail stating that all they got was a black screen (which is embarrassing to all concerned) and that from now on I either submit a NTSC dvd spec 720 by 480 file or my program is off the air.
My Premier Pro project (only v3.2) concerned (currently on the timeline) is 1440 by 1080 shot in 60i with an FPS of 29.97. So now I’m required to downgrade it to SD & do my best to ensure that quality doesn’t take a tremendous hit. The mission is to take this project direct from the timeline (it’s finalized + fully edited) and make an MPEG-2 dvd spec file. Bottom-line, how is this best achieved & by what process/methodology or workflow?
    My twin goals are to:
    a)      Preserve the aspect ratio since I take very tight shots, so a crop and resize probably would do more harm than good. What kind of an option is SD 16:9 over 4:3? What are the pros & cons of each? I don’t want to unintentionally crop off part of a body part for example.
    b)      To the extent possible, maintain image/footage quality so that it remains watchable. I’m looking for a workflow that will retain quality within reason.
What approach and solution would you take if you were in my shoes?
Am sure others have traveled this route before and would appreciate all input and pointers to mull over and try to apply them not only to this project, but those in the future as well.
    Thanks so much.

  • Choppy playback of AVCHD footage. 1920 x 1080 60p. Imported as optimized media.

So I have some stuff shot on different days, same card, same camera, same settings.  1920 x 1080 AVCHD 60fps progressive, imported as optimized media.  I know my computer and external drive are able to handle this kind of footage. What is puzzling is that some clips with the same specs, play back very choppy (like unrendered media) and others play back wonderful.  What gives, I must be missing something obvious. Why would some clips play ok and others really badly?  I have double checked that everything (codec, frame rate, optimized vs. proxy) is the same by viewing stats in the events browser. Dropping these clips into the timeline does not show they need rendering, but if I output the clip as a master file, it plays fine. I have clips in other events that play great, with the same specs.  I am at a real loss. thanks gentlemen.

Sorry, but I can't think of anything during import that would introduce errors that would cause  choppy playback. A momemttary loss of connection would be a problem but would typically corrupt the file and it most likely not play at all.
If you hadn't said that some clips played (or previewed) perfectly smoothly, I'd suspect a hardware problem.
Maybe someone else will have some better ideas.
    Russ

  • Combining 1080i and 1080p HDV footage on single timeline, for SD output?

    Hi All
Help! I'm a cameraperson/director who was has just shot a largeish doccie project on a Sony HVR-V1E. My technical background is in stills, so I hope you'll forgive some ignorance here.
BACKGROUND: The vast majority of the footage was shot HDV using the 25fps prog scan mode on the camera. I really don't like interlace jaggies and I was advised that this was the obvious way of getting away from them, and made for very useable footage when output as standard def interlaced PAL. However, some footage for the project was also shot on a small Sony HDR-HC9 (PAL) camera. The HC9 has no progressive scan mode, i.e. this footage is 1080i50.
The primary broadcaster for this doccie requires delivery on Beta SP, standard def PAL. Because of the 16:9 aspect ratio of the HDV format, the film will be delivered letterboxed, black above and below.
THE MAIN QUESTION: We'll be editing in FCP 6.0 . My editor is more of an Avid person, and is concerned that without proper setup we'l end up with issues later on when we downsize to SD, especially because we'll be combining prog-scanned footage with interlace-scanned footage. We need to know whether to set the sequence presets as HDV 1080i50 or HDV 1080p25.
We're planning to edit as an HDV project and downscale to SD using Compressor. I know this downscaling is likely to take a long time, however we've been advised that editing in HDV is less intensive than going the ProRes route, and the quality of the Compressor downscale is better than that of the other 'within FCP' options.
I've been advised to set the sequence preset to i50, but I'm not sure if Compressor has a harder time resizing interlaced footage than progressive footage. Common sense tell me it'll be easier to resize a progressive frame and then split it into two interlaced fields without artifacts, than resizing and regenerating interlaced fields from 1080 down to PAL dimensions. However, if the sequence preset is p25, will FCP deal with the bits of i50 footage in the project OK?
Also, I've been told but cannot confirm that the Sony HVR-V1E camera scans progressively in 25fps prog scan mode, but encodes each progressively-scanned image as two interlaced fields on the tape, i.e. as 1080i50 images. Is this true? If so, it would surely mean that the sequence preset should be 1080i50 with progressive-scanned imagery emanating from this model of camera.
    I hope this makes sense!
    Regards
    Adam Welz, Cape Town

    Hi,
FCP is open format timeline based, so it will transcode the footage according to the first clip on the timeline. so it will not be a problem for two different formats. i've used DVCAM, HDV formats together it has done for me nicely.
but check the result before proceding further ahed in edit in both preset format.
and using Compressor is not a good idea for broadcast I believe, it is ok if there is no other option is with you. It is better to do it with the hardware rather than software.
I use realtime Blackmagic hardware for down converting HD to SD with letterbox directly to tape.

  • 60fps footage in 30fps timeline plays with artifacts problem

I have to types of footage for a project: 720P 60fps shot in avchd and 1080P 30 shot with an HDV camera.
I am trying to combine the clips in the Premiere pro CS 4.1 AVHD 720P30 sequence preset. I do have to resize the 1080P footage but that is fine. The 60P footage plays at the correct speed, but it is filled with artifacts during playback in the timeline.
When I view the 60fps footage in the AVCHD 720P60 sequence preset, it playse back smoothy with no artifacts.
Am I missing a setting (such as frame blend maybe) or should I just try to edit everything in a 72060fps sequence and hope the hdv footage will be okay?
    Thanks!

That's strange--the Source monitor is, as far as I'm aware, frame rate and format-agnostic, and should playback whatever is in it at its native frame rate. Unlike a sequence (and therefore, the Program monitor), it bends to the will of the material it contains, regardless of what it is. I'm indeed bewildered by this, and I'm sorry to say I don't have any idea what the problem might be. Did you change the interpretation of the footage after you imported it, or is it "as-is"? What is the playback quality setting for the source monitor?
EDIT: By way of example, the screen shot below shows a 29.97P clip in the source monitor, and then the same clip and frame in a 23.976 sequence. Frame Blending is on for the clip in the sequence, resulting in the smear, but that's not a problem in the source monitor:

  • Orange render bar on native DV or DVCPRO HD footage in matching timelines

Okay, I've searching and calling people to figure this one out. I've captured DV footage, removed the pulldowns correctly to make it 24p, and I've used easy setup and checked my timeline settings. All correct and matching. So, why are the raw clips dropped onto the timeline presenting me with an orange render bar. This is happening with DVCPRO HD footage too. I don't remember this being an issue until updating to 5.1.3. I upgraded, so I have to downgrade to test my theory.
I have 5.0.4 still installed, so I tried it. Used XML to reopen project in 5.0.4, I have no such problems, no orange render line. What's the deal? Is 5.1.3-5.1.4 have to use core video or something that my graphic card in my old G4 tower can't handle?
Please somebody tell me this is happening to them too. It doesn't occur on my MacBook Pro, just my tower.
    PPC G4 1.4Ghz, 1.5Gig RAM   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

Sorry, I didn't mention all that I tried. I did dump the prefs, still no use. I'm trying to find 5.1.2 right now, see if it did it. I don't remember an issue under 5.1.1 either.
This is very frustrating because it's supposed to be running natively on the media that FCP runs natively. Even the old versions work better at this. Not a problem if you're on an Intel box with the new stuff. Seems like it's purposely crippled.

  • Need to edit 24 footage in 30 timeline. Best way??

    Here's the deal.
The producer just gave me a terabyte HD with 20 mini DV tapes logged onto it.
5 of those tapes were shot in 24PA mode, and the rest 30P.
So... I have the footage already logged with pulldown NOT removed.
    I could either:
use nattress standards conversion's "G advanced pulldown converter" which will convert the clips. But I'd have to cut up the tape at every start/stop recording, find the double frame, apply filter. What does this do? how does it smooth out the footage?
Or I could remove pulldown on all the clips using compressor or cinema tools, then use nattress's "add pulldown" to get back up to 29.97. How exactly does this work? what does it add? a duplicate frame?
Which would give me better results? anyone use these before?
any other ideas much appreciated. No... getting the tapes from the producer, and re-logging, is not an option at this point.

I'd remove the cadence and add the simple 3.2 cadence. I think CT will add it for you, but if not just lay it on a sequence and lay it back to tape. FCP will add the 3.2 cadence by default. Else check the RT settings on the timeline to make sure.
Won't add frames... will COMBINE frames. Look up pulldown cadence (adam wilt (sp) site will have a really good explanation of it).
    Good luck,

  • Need to edit 1080 24p 7D footage and 50i SD XL2 footage in same timeline.

Any help would be appreciated. Editing using latest Final Cut Studio on a Mac Pro and a Mac Book Pro.
I have Canon 7D 1080 24p footage and 50i SD 16:9 Canon XL2 footage to edit together in the same timeline.
Outputting as an SD DVD. I'm working with PAL all the time. I was under the impression that 24p was PAL, but have been told that 24p is NTSC.
I convert the 7D footage to Pro Res LT. Then what do you suggest?
Do I use Compressor or Cinema Tools to "conform" the 24p to 25p? And then work in an SD timeline suited for the 50i footage? Would I be automatically making the 7D footage SD if I move it into the SD timeline? Thanks.

In case any one needs the answer to this in the future, I think I've stumbled upon the solution elsewhere.
Change the 7D footage to Pro Res LT. Using Cinema Tools, convert it to 25p. Drop the 25p footage into a Final Cut timeline that is set up for the 50i footage. I haven't tried it yet, but will.

I am looking to upgrade to a Mac, it been a few years but am finally coming back. i want to know if Imovie or Final cut express 4 will play and edit my HD AVCHD H.264 Footage filmed in 1920 x 1080p at 60fields/sec 16Mbps from an SD Card.
Will it be able to edited, with titles transitions and music with a few extra goodies and be able to be exported onto a DVD for and hour and a halfs viewing on a normal bog standard DVD player in the front room.
This is going to be an easy answer for some of you out there but i have had no end of problems with this footage and before i jump to spend £2000 on an i5 mac i would like someone to tell me the problems i will encounter.
