2 Devices 1 Libary

I have an iPhone and now an iPod Classic. My iPhone holds some of my music libary but i want my iPod Classic to hold EVERYTHING. (music, movies, movie trailers, music videos, photos, ect.) How do I sync everything to the ipod classic without syncing everything to the iPhone? Thanks
-Jesse-

iTunes knows the difference between different iPod devices, so you can set up each one to sync any way you want and in different ways from each other. You are not required to sync all devices the same way. So the new Classic you can sync everything onto and the iPhone you can continue to sync it how ever you currently sync it.

    Your post is confusing.
I have a G4 that crashed backup data on a firewire drive.
Okay. Good thing it was only the backup. Replace the drive and back up the original data again. But this has nothing to do with iTunes.
I want to access my iTunes playlist from an iMac
Does this mean you have iTunes on the G4 computer and you want to access this library from the iMac?
Turn on Home Sharing on both computers

I'm with you verm71; it's not entirely clear how Apple is expecting you to manage this.  I'm going on vacation soon and want to clean up my phone so that it's nice and empty for the new pictures.  There doesn't seem to be a way to do this without losing your pictures in the new Photos as well.  If imported, it's impossible to see which is the Cloud version and which is the Local version.  It's very annoying.
I've also noticed in iPhoto you used to have the ability to locate the original of the picture inside the photo database.  That option is not provided in Photos, making finding the original extremely difficult.
It seems to be a great, well-oiled system.  But I would love to know how Apple envisions the typical workflow for archiving...

  • CD/device --== itunes (libary"music")

i am trying to take music from CD's and put it on my i pod nano... I am able to take the CD and get it into iTunes with out any issues... Everything shows up fine with out an issues...- the problem i am having is -
when i try to move Songs from a CD that show up under device --- and move them to -- music folder -- the TIME/LENGTH of song doesn't show up - and therefore wont copy correctly - and cant play..
    any ideas... please help...

OK, disconnect the iPod from the computer and put it in a drawer. We aren't ready for that step yet.
With iTunes running, insert the CD in the drive. When it displays, you should see its track listing. Click the "Import CD" button at the lower right. Let it import, which will take a few minutes. Do not do anything else on the computer while it is importing.
When that is done, remive the CD. Find the songs in your iTunes library and make sure they play properly. If they play correctly, get the iPod and sync it.

  • Sharing itunes libary of different users on multiple devices

How can you share itunes library of individuals on different accounts.  We want to combine our libraries on IPOD that we use to play music at home

iTunes: How to share music between different accounts on a single computer describes two methods.
    Each method has it's (dis)advantages.
Fast user switching enables listening to each others music, but iTunes of the acount you're listening to, has to be active.
By using this method, you can't mess up each others library.
Putting the music in a shared folder (second method) gives each user full access. If one user adds or deletes files, the others have to do the same.
    Hope this helps.

  • IPhone and iPad can no longer connect to iTunes Libary via Remote

Up until a couple of hours ago, I had no problems controlling iTunes on my MacBook Pro via my iPhone or iPad. Now, on both devices, I get an error saying it can't connect to my Library.
All devices are connected to the same network. I get the error whether my firewall is on or off. I have tried re-adding the Library. When I do so the relevant device shows up in iTunes and the pairing process SEEMS to work. It tells me that my iPhone can now control my library, but it still can't connect.
    I've tried rebooting the router.
All devices show the same ip address for the router and all are on the same subnet.
I've just upgraded iTunes to 10.2.1 and everything on the iPhone and iPad has the latest upgrades.
Also when I go to the iPod app on my iPhone and go to More -> Shared -> and then my library, I get an error saying "Cannot Connect to Media Libary"
I've seen this advice, "You must also have the iTunes preference "Look for iPod touch, iPhone and iPad Remotes" enabled. " I cannot find this preference anywhere. It's not something I've ever looked for before so possibly the name of it has changed in a recent iTunes release. Can anyone tell me if I'm looking for the right thing and where I might find it?
    Any other ideas?
Anyone else with a similar problem that has cropped up recently?

Hi Everyone, I found a solution to this problem with no "Look for iPod..." option.
Check "Allow iTunes Audio Control from Speakers"
    Then, RESTART iTunes.
Heres a picture of what to check off:

  • Bought Pac-Man, Downloads but will not show up in my libary. Charged 3 time

Ok, I went to the music store, then went to games and I signed in and purchased Pac-Man. Everything is cool, it downloads pretty quickly, I belive it was 8.28 mb or something like that and once its finished downloading it simply vanishes, it did not go in to my libary, or my playlist, I couldnt find it anywhere. So I checked my paypal account to see if the charge went through and when I bought movies from itunes before it charged me instantly, this time there was no charge. So I thought maybe it didnt purchase it so I try it one more time, the exact same thing happens, downloads and its no where to be found, then I check paypal still nothing, I tried one more time and it did the exact same thing. I checked my paypal the other day and it say -$15 from itunes, so i checked my invoice and it said pac-man x3 each one being $5 bucks. Its one thing to charged 3 times for the same thing but I dont even have the game to show for it. Yes I have a 5th gen ipod, yes I have the most current version of itunes and yes I had my itunes check for purchases, it says all my purchases have successfully downloaded. Does anyone know where my 3 pac-man games are, or what I need to do to get them?
    Thanks.
Tl;dr bought pac-man, downloads successfully but does not save/stay in my libary/itunes.

I had this exact same problem when I updated to iOS 7 , so I contacted iBooks there information to me was to completely reboot my iPad and iPhone 5s , and then when it's rebooted ( sorry delete the app before rebooting , my mistake ) after it's rebooted download app again , and ask for previous purchases to be restored , was done in seconds , and I lost 7 books , all on my devices now , if I don't read for a while they just automatically get put into the cloud , and just download to read , hope this helps . And please delete app before rebooting , john.

  • Synching apps with 2 user accounts, 3 devices and one computer only

    I have a question that I can't find a clear answer.
I previous had one iPod touch and one iPad that I synched with my iTunes library. No problem. But now the wife has finally purchased a verizon iPhone and I want to be able to use my vast app collection for her phone.
Scenario is we each have separate user accounts (so we can maintain our own calendars and contacts, ect.). We each have our own ITunes accounts and our own iTunes libraries by default. She will not be purchasing much on her account though.
How do I, without creating a can of worms, create one library to sync to so I can put apps and music on her phone without erasing any of her separate information. I have read a lot on the subject and there does not seem to be a clear answer anywhere. Yes, I have read ht1495 but that does not seem to be exactly on point
Basically, I have 3 devices, 2 user accounts and 2 iTunes accounts but one computer only. I want to be able to have all iTunes stuff available on both user accounts and be able to have both people be able to read and write to the same library. I am sure there are plenty of people running into this issue with more and more people getting iPhones with verizon. It seems that it is easier to do with multiple computers than one computer.
So, I am looking for help or advice on the easiest way to accomplish this task.

In a way, each iTunes libary is considered to be a different account. Your daughter's iTunes account doesn't have access to your wife's data which has all the verification data.
One option would not only to place the library in a Shared area, but also the verification data. I poked around and am not sure where it's stored. It's a good discussion to have with an Apple store Genius if you have one nearby.

  • How to sync two separate iphone's to one computer without wiping and replacing libary?

my brother has an iphone 4 but needs updating, how can i plug his iphone into my computer where i have my own itunes libary without wiping his music, apps etc. with mine?

You can also *Transfer purchases from device* to copy all your purchased content into the new library. If you've got media on the phone that wasn't backed up from the old machine then you should probably take a look at this post from Zevoneer for options on moving your data back to a computer.

  • Need to get all the files, well music and video, from my ipod touch 5th gen to my itunes libary.

Need to get all the files, (well music and video), from my ipod touch 5th gen to my itunes libary. (So basically sync the other way to normal)
Laptop hard drive broke so had to buy a new one and obviously now need to sort out my itunes.
Did try downloading all my purchased stuff onto itunes but it has missed some things off, and there are some files I did not purchase from itunes so need a way of getting them back on there.
Sure this question has been asked a million times but can't find anything to help me on here so thought I'd ask.
-Did have a look at going onto the start menu and opening the hidden items thing but couldn't see any reference to ipod or device on it so wasn't sure how to do it that way.
-On itunes under my device when its connected, the section about manually restoring and backing up, would that help me? Because that says it will manually back up my ipod to my computer then could restore that back up, obviously I don't want to accidnetally get rid of everything on my ipod so didn't want to try that just in case without checking.
(And yes I have disabled auto sync to device when conncected!)
Can anyone help me please? Sorry if i've overcomplicated this!
    Thanks:)
    Chris

Backing up an iOS device will copy some data to a backup file within iTunes, but this excludes all media.  You can also transfer iTunes Store purchases from the iDevice to iTunes but, without using a third-party tool, nothing else.  As long as you do not sync the iPod with your new library, the media that's on it will remain ... for as long as it keeps functioning, is not lost, stolen, eaten by the dog, ...
You may also have an option to recover your previous library from your old laptop; as long as its hard drive isn't fried, a computer repair store or technician may be able to extract the drive, mount it in an external enclosure, and copy your data to another PC.  Whatever you choose, there is no real alternative to having all your media on your computer, managed by iTunes, and regularly backed up to another device/location.

  • ITunes Home Sharing - iOS Devices & Apple TV

    Greetings All
For the first time since iOS 5 (yes... iOS 5), I have successfully conquered the conundrum with using home sharing from my iTunes library to my iPhone 6 Plus running iOS 8.2. It has been YEARS since I've been able to successfully share my library to my iPhone.
First might I add that I have a fairly "large" iTunes library, consisting of close to 30,000 songs of which 25k are encoded using Apple Lossless, resulting in songs with a larger file size than ordinary by comparison to a library with songs encoded with the default iTunes Plus format. I also have my iTunes library on an external hard drive which is connected via USB. I do believe that the size of the library.
As you can imagine, I've seen the many, many updates of iTunes along the way as well as the iOS updates to match. I have not successfully been able to connect to my library since I had my iPhone 4 using the first update introducing Home Sharing until around the iOS 5 mark. The issues I've endured prohibiting me from using this feature include:
    - Shared library appears in 'Shared' on the Music app however it doesn't connect successfully; i.e. loads only a half circle, fails to load at all, unable to load home sharing.
    - Unable to see the shared library at all, which is usually due to a minor omission such as failing to ensure the device is on the same network as the shared library, incorrect password etc.
Many have suggested that this feature fails to work due to network settings, however I have tried home sharing on completely different networks, routers and even COUNTRIES. Yes, once in Australia and now in the United States, all of which failed.
Here are some steps for my workaround:
    1. I renamed my computer: System Preferences > Sharing and then restarted my computer (Mac Pro mid-2010). This problems seems to help with Apple TVs.
    2. I reset my network settings on my iDevice: Settings > General > Reset > Reset Network Settings
    3. I also (at some stage) logged in and out of Home Sharing in iTunes: File > Home Sharing
I'm not sure if any of these steps were able to clear the issue, however the following steps were what solved my issue:
    1. I turned 'Auto-Lock' to 'Never' on my iDevice
    2. I then attempted to connect to my shared library in the Music app: More (bottom right) > Shared > Shared Library
    3. I patiently allowed the circle to load which took around 30 minutes (yes slow... like watching paint dry) and completely avoided touching my iPhone to exit the app. Turning off the Auto-Lock feature also prohibited the iPhone from locking while this was loading.
    4. The trick here is to be PATIENT. Once it showed that it was connected to my shared library, I went to send and gently scrolled down to allow all the artwork to populate to my phone.
Avoid playing any songs until this has been done. Again it takes a very long time but the trick is to allow your iPhone to successfully load your iTunes library as it tends to take a while to gather all the necessary information. Attempting to play a song will most likely mean that the song will just skip to the next, and the next, and the next... and the next.
With some patience and if you're still alive by this point, you'll find that you're able to scroll through playlists and songs without a glitch.
Again, it does take a very long time but it ultimately does end up working.
    Good luck!

After playing around one more time i was able to restart homesharing and get the apple tv to see my movies and music from the itunes on the imac (where itunes reads from the media server and manages the libary).  The question now is ...
does the media get routed over the router over multiple hops from media server --> router --> imac/itunes --> router --> appletv or is home sharing intelligent enough to read the file from the media server?

    Hi RadarCat16,
Welcome to the Apple Support Communities!
I know it can be frustrating when you are waiting for content to download to your iPhone from the iTunes Store. There are a few steps I would recommend in this situation. Please read over and follow the steps in the attached article.
iTunes: How to resume interrupted iTunes Store downloads
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1725
If your download was interrupted using your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch
From the Home screen, tap the iTunes app.
For iPhone or iPod touch, tap More > Downloads. For iPad, tap Downloads.
Enter your account name and password if prompted.
Tap the blue download arrow to resume.
If you can't complete the download on your iOS device, you can download it in iTunes on your Mac or PC and then sync it to your iOS device. You can also transfer purchases from your iPhone, iPad, or iPod to a computer.
    Have a great day,
    Joe

  • Ipod sync is greyed out after latest update and libary was wiped

i updated the latest update...2 weeks later opened itunes my libary was gone bar itunes purchases...
now when ipod is connected if i go to file/ devices ipod isnt there eg bla blas ipod and the sync is greyed out ..
now before i updated the latest update all was fine..
ive since put my libary back as is stored on external hard drive and reset ipod and added libary back to ipod
but still the same as dicribed above.
now i connected my wifes iphone 4s to itunes went to file/devices hey presto itunes reconised it as eg wifes iphone
    but dosnt do for ipod..
    any ideas cheers.

Normally a greyed out Wifi is a hardware failure, but with some of the problems I've seen with the upgrade to iOS 4 on 3G phones, I'm not convinced the problem/problems aren't related to software. I have two suggestions, neither of which are guaranteed to work: 1. Restore your phone as a "new" device in itunes & not from backup. But first delete any and all .ipsw files on your computer. This will force itunes to re-download the current OS. The .ipsw file can be found here:
    OS X: ~/Library/iTunes/iPhone Software Updates
    XP: C:\Documents and Settingsusername\Application Data\Apple Computer\iTunes\iPhone Software Updates
    7 & Vista: C:\Usersusername\AppData\Roaming\Apple Computer\iTunes\iPhone Software Updates
You may have to turn on "show all hidden files" to find them.
Once done, reboot your computer, launch itunes, connect your phone & restore as "new". When finished, DO NOT SYNC, rather eject your phone & see if all is working properly. If it is, sync your content back to your phone. If not, proceed AT YOUR OWN RISK!
    2. Try and downgrade to 3.1.3 from here:
    http://www.felixbruns.de/iPod/firmware/
Note: Before you try this, bear in mind this is NOT endorsed by Apple & that you run the risk of making your phone inoperable.

  • My computer says its libary is differnt to the one on my ipod

hey thanks for looking my problem began after i updated i think.. now when my ipod trys to snyc it wants to del all my stuff because it says its from a differnt libary? does anyone know how to snyc the comps library not the ipods causing me to loose brought apps and playlists and such

I am having the same problem. I follow directions from apple's website (http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1449) to move my wife's iTunes library to another location, after having found out that one of my kids got the computer they use infected with some viruses. Having followed the instructions to the "T", it is still saying that the iPhone is synched to a different library and has to be erased and resynched.
Now that in itself isn't a huge deal, except my wife has spent hours and hours creating and managing her playlists, and if they get wiped out (I suspect they're already gone), she will not be happy.
The thing I'm mostly wondering is, why is it so difficult to manage music and movies with iTunes? I love Apple devices, and I have an iPad myself, but I dread the thought of having to sort out these kinds of issues. She has over 20GB of music and movies, and having to re-add all of that to iTunes will make her seriously considering getting a Droid phone. I agree that it's way more painful than it needs to be.
On another note, we've had bad luck with a few hard drives in the past, forcing us to reload Windows from time to time. She's now at 5 out of 5 authorizations for her AppleID account, and I have no idea what happens if this drive dies and she can't authorize a new one. Is there some way to posthumously de-authorized a computer that doesn't exist anymore?
What I'd really like to see in iTunes is a configuration option like this:
Move iTunes library to a new location [C:\Users\myname\iTunes] [ Ok ]
You click the button, and after some time, your library has been moved. No muss, no fuss, and no having to buy a ridiculous third-party application (that for all I know has stolen my AppleID and password) to manage this stuff.
