2 questions regarding output to offset printing

I am using CS4 to work on pictures I have taken and will be used for postcards. The sizes can be 105*148 or 120*170 mm. some cards will have more then one picture in which case there may be samller inserts, maybe as small as 25*25mm
In relation to this work I have basically 2 questions:
1) I will be using Indesign to size the pictures down to final size and also for the small inserts. My question is regarding sharpening. Do I need to size the photos in Photoshop and possibly adjust the sharpening there, or do I not need to worry about this?
2) Should I convert my photos to CMYK in Photoshop, or can I leave this to Indesign? I will be sending the pictures to the printers as PDF.
Much appreciate any help and comments on this,
Tolli Birgisson

You can use InDesign to resize the images. When you select an image you can go to Window>Info and it shows you two things
Actual PPI
Effective PPI
Actual PPI shows what resolution the image is itself.
Effective PPI shows you what resolution the image is at it's current scaled size. The larger you make the picture the lower the ppi (or the bigger you make the picture the further the pixels separate and therefore the less PPI (pixels per inch). The same is applied when making the image smaller. The further you reduce the picture, the closer the pixels get to each other, therefore you have more pixels per inch, which is a higher PPI.
The advantage of doing this in InDesign is that you have no second party software to rely on. You just resize.
The disadvantage is that InDesign doesn't apply any sharpening or other filters to the image, it uses Bicubic Smoother (I think?) to resample the image.
When you export to PDF you can choose what way you want to resample images and to what resolution you want images above say 450 ppi to be resampled to 300 ppi.
It would be better to use photoshop to make them the images the correct size at the correct resolution and place the image at 100%. You can then apply sharpening etc. to the image in photoshop. You can turn off resampling the images in Export to PDF in InDesign and turn off compression.
If you are going to resample the images in Photoshop then you should be aware of file types. If they're all jpgs then you don't want to resave your images as JPG, you'd be better of resampling and resizing and then saving the image as a tiff, as it's a lossless format.
You can use CS4 to relink to another folder
Now for question 2
You can convert your images to CMYK in photoshop, why not? Well make sure your Color Settings are set up similar to that of InDesign. If your images are going to be for print only then you can Assign Profile of whatever profile you want. You should check with your printers what profile they use. It could be:
Coated or Uncoated Fogra
US Sheetfed
Euroscale (coated or uncoated)
US Web Press
etc.
You need to check that with prepress.
Of course you can convert your images to a profile when exporting to PDF straight from InDesign. In which case don't convert to CMYK in photoshop - sort of. It's a rather complex answer.
But if you choose the profile Colour Conversion of Convert to "Destionation Preserve Numbers"
Select your Destination (profile, which will be Coated or Uncoated Fogra or US SHEETFED or US WEB Press or whatever was recommend by your prepress in what they use).
As I said it's a rather complex answer so perhaps this will clear up anything else for you, if not just ask http://www.peachpit.com/articles/article.aspx?p=1324238

  • Question regarding outputing results of query to pdf file

Is there a way in which we can output the results of the query to a PDF file in PLSQL?
    Thanks much,

I have a situation where there needs to be emails sent to the customers on a daily basis.Right now there is scheduled bat file on a particular machine which calls the Form which has the logic to generate the pdf file using Oracle Reports for each of the customer, which is then mailed using Outlook(OLE in form). But now this is kind of a problem as they are constant network problems which hinder the timely sending of the reports.
I am trying to look for a solution so that we can do everything on database end instead of relying on the newtork.
Thank you for any suggestions you have regarding implementing this.

  • Questions regarding PO output in SRM 4.0

    Hi All
I have several questions regarding the settings for PO output in SRM 4.0 ( Ext. classic)
Would really appreciate if someone provides me the rationale and business reasons behind some config settings:
I am referring to BBP_PO_ACTION_DEF transaction in IMG
    1) What is the difference between Processing when saving document & immediate processing. SHouldn't the PO output be always processed after the PO is changed and saved?
    2) In the Determination technology what is the significance of the term ' Transportable conditions'. Why would it be different if the conditions were manual and not transportable?
    3) In the Rule type what is the signifcance of Workflow conditions? How workflow controls the output?
    4) What is the meaning of ' Action merging' in layman's terms and what do each of the choices like "Max. 1 Unprocessed Action for Each Processing Type" signify.
    5) What powers do the 'changeable in dialog' & 'executable in dialog' indicators assign to the user processing the PO. What happens if these indicators are not set.
    6) What does ' Archive mode' in processing type signify. Are the PO outputs archived and stored?
    Regards
    Kedar

    Hello,
Have a look at note 564826. It has some information.
As far as I know, processing time 'Immediate Processing' is not allowed. I really don't know the reason.
"Processing Time" should be defined as "Process using Selection Report" when an output should be processed by a report, such as RSPPFPROCESS, for example.
If you set this as "Process when Saving document", then the output will be sent immediately, otherwise you have to process it with transaction BBP_PPF.
I hope I could help you a little.
    Kind regards,

  • Offset Printing Question

    Hello,
I need an advise on how to print a very deep blue color on offset printing. I am doing a catalog for an artist who uses very nice deep blue color. His technique of applying the color is very special, so when seen with human eye it is very illuminating. Professional photo can capture the effect decently, but numerous trials on different publications show that offset printing can't get anywhere close to the original color by the artist. Sometimes it gets muddy grayish blue, but sometimes it gets more to the purple side with a lot of magenta in it.
If you are curious what kind of art I am talking about, you may visit www.chimeddorj.com
The reason is that cyan, magenta and a bit of black can't really create a pure Cobalt Blue. So I was thinking if there was a way to add an additional printing separation for a pure blue color from Pantone. That way the Spot Pantone blue that is closest to the artist's color will act as a base and CMYK color will add necessary shades depending on the situation.
Does it sound reasonable? Does any one think it will work?  I need your opinions or expertises.
Also, do you know any other web sites with forums specifically dedicated to commercial print topics?

    Dear John Danek,
I hope everything is well with you. I know that you are one of the most active participants of the adobe forums. I would like to ask your help on a pretty complicated Photoshop problem. I thought you may have some experience printing in Solid colors and separating them into channels.
I am trying to print a book using two solid colors in addition to the 4 process colors. But the solid colors will not be applied just plainly. The photographic images will have certain areas printed in solid colors that will diffuse smoothly with other 4 colors. If you would like to get a better understanding of my problem, you could visit my previous post on adobe forums under these links. You have added your entry on the second link almost a year ago.

I found a printer who made me a test print with my channel separated files. Although the saturation and overall color quality has improved a lot, the test came out quite bad because I didn’t separate the channels right. I want the solid color to diffuse smoothly with other 4 colors. So I need to learn to make the separations in a right way.
If you are willing to take a look at my sample print and the color separated PS files, I can send them to you in a link. I have a high expectancy that this is going to work eventually. For now it is just a matter of separating the colors in a right way.

  • How to send background program output to a printer

    Hi !
I created a background report, running via a job in background. I need to display the output of the background report via two channels : a printer and an e
mail. I created the output of the report by using the command Write, and the output is printed to screen. However this solution is good for an online report and not for background report ? and my question is how to send the background report output to a printer in background .
    Thanks
    Moshe

    Hi,
If you are using JOB_OPEN, JOB_SUBMIT & JOB_CLOSE to execute the program in background, then in the FM JOB_SUBMIT you have a parameter PRIPARAMS for which you need to pass a value.
Before that get all the Print Parameters using FM GET_PRINT_PARAMETERS. Then pass the same to PRIPARAMS.
    This would solve the problem.

  • Using Photoshop for offset printing projects (packaging) - simple or complex?

    Hi,
I'm about to start a new project. It's a product package (box).
Normally, I would do this in Illustrator. However, I was wondering if I could do it all in Photoshop by saving the final output as a PDF.
I've only ever used Photoshop in 4-color process scenarios and numeric printing. In other words, "sky's the limit" scenarios, where all I need to care about is how it looks on the screen. I'm not sure how to attack this from the perspective of offset printing.
I've checked with the printer, and he says a CMYK PDF is fine. But that the basic rules of offset still apply.
First, is it realistic of me to envision doing this box in Photoshop? It would really save me a lot of time not having to switch back and forth from PS to AI the way I usually do in projects like these.
How would I go about telling a text layer to use a specific offset pantone, or pure black, for instance?
Am I making too big a deal out of something simple, or am I being unreasonably simplistic regarding something more complex?

...or am I being unreasonably simplistic regarding something more complex?
Probably yes (no offense). Just a few random thoughts:
    - you can't do die, glue and fold lines in PS as you can't do specific other custom print marks required for stamping, foil coating, varnishing or whatever
    - process colors in PS are limited to multichannel/ duotones/ tritones and since they will be raster, they will never print sharp, especially when printing on something like uncoated C or G flute
    - similarly, barcodes and other required markings may not print correctly
So no, there is possibly no way you can do this in just PS. In particular the cutting part will require a complementary EPS/ PDF based on genuine vector data and it really doesn't hurt to have proper alignement crosshairs, either.

  • I have some questions regarding setting up a software RAID 0 on a Mac Pro

I have some questions regarding setting up a software RAID 0 on a Mac pro (early 2009).
These questions might seem stupid to many of you, but, as my last, in fact my one and only, computer before the Mac Pro was a IICX/4/80 running System 7.5, I am a complete novice regarding this particular matter.
A few days ago I installed a WD3000HLFS VelociRaptor 300GB in bay 1, and moved the original 640GB HD to bay 2. I now have 2 bootable internal drives, and currently I am using the VR300 as my startup disk. Instead of cloning from the original drive, I have reinstalled the Mac OS, and all my applications & software onto the VR300. Everything is backed up onto a WD SE II 2TB external drive, using Time Machine. The original 640GB has an eDrive partition, which was created some time ago using TechTool Pro 5.
The system will be used primarily for photo editing, digital imaging, and to produce colour prints up to A2 size. Some of the image files, from scanned imports of film negatives & transparencies, will be 40MB or larger. Next year I hope to buy a high resolution full frame digital SLR, which will also generate large files.
Currently I am using Apple's bundled iPhoto, Aperture 2, Photoshop Elements 8, Silverfast Ai, ColorMunki Photo, EZcolor and other applications/software. I will also be using Photoshop CS5, when it becomes available, and I will probably change over to Lightroom 3, which is currently in Beta, because I have had problems with Aperture, which, until recent upgrades (HD, RAM & graphics card) to my system, would not even load images for print. All I had was a blank preview page, and a constant, frozen "loading" message - the symbol underneath remained static, instead of revolving!
It is now possible to print images from within Aperture 2, but I am not happy with the colour fidelity, whereas it is possible to produce excellent, natural colour prints using its "minnow" sibling, iPhoto!
My intention is to buy another 3 VR300s to form a 4 drive Raid 0 array for optimum performance, and to store the original 640GB drive as an emergency bootable back-up. I would have ordered the additional VR300s already, but for the fact that there appears to have been a run on them, and currently they are out of stock at all, but the more expensive, UK resellers.
I should be most grateful to receive advice regarding the following questions:
    QUESTION 1:
I have had a look at the RAID setting up facility in Disk Utility and it states: "To create a RAID set, drag disks or partitions into the list below".
If I install another 3 VR300s, can I drag all 4 of them into the "list below" box, without any risk of losing everything I have already installed on the existing VR300?
Or would I have to reinstall the OS, applications and software again?
I mention this, because one of the applications, Personal accountz, has a label on its CD wallet stating that the Licence Key can only be used once, and I have already used it when I installed it on the existing VR300.
    QUESTION 2:
I understand that the failure of just one drive will result in all the data in a Raid 0 array being lost.
Does this mean that I would not be able to boot up from the 4 drive array in that scenario?
Even so, it would be worth the risk to gain the optimum performance provide by Raid 0 over the other RAID setup options, and, in addition to the SE II, I will probably back up all my image files onto a portable drive as an additional precaution.
    QUESTION 3:
Is it possible to create an eDrive partition, using TechTool Pro 5, on the VR300 in bay !?
Or would this not be of any use anyway, in the event of a single drive failure?
    QUESTION 4:
Would there be a significant increase in performance using a 4 x VR300 drive RAID 0 array, compared to only 2 or 3 drives?
    QUESTION 5:
If I used a 3 x VR300 RAID 0 array, and installed either a cloned VR300 or the original 640GB HD in bay 4, and I left the Startup Disk in System Preferences unlocked, would the system boot up automatically from the 4th. drive in the event of a single drive failure in the 3 drive RAID 0 array which had been selected for startup?
Apologies if these seem stupid questions, but I am trying to determine the best option without foregoing optimum performance.

    Well said.
    Steps to set up RAID
Setting up a RAID array in Mac OS X is part of the installation process. This procedure assumes that you have already installed Mac OS 10.1 and the hard drive subsystem (two hard drives and a PCI controller card, for example) that RAID will be implemented on. Follow these steps:
    1. Open Disk Utility (/Applications/Utilities).
    2. When the disks appear in the pane on the left, select the disks you wish to be in the array and drag them to the disk panel.
    3. Choose Stripe or Mirror from the RAID Scheme pop-up menu.
    4. Name the RAID set.
    5. Choose a volume format. The size of the array will be automatically determined based on what you selected.
    6. Click Create.
Recovering from a hard drive failure on a mirrored array
    1. Open Disk Utility in (/Applications/Utilities).
    2. Click the RAID tab. If an issue has occurred, a dialog box will appear that describes it.
    3. If an issue with the disk is indicated, click Rebuild.
    4. If Rebuild does not work, shut down the computer and replace the damaged hard disk.
    5. Repeat steps 1 and 2.
    6. Drag the icon of the new disk on top of that of the removed disk.
    7. Click Rebuild.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2559
    Drive A + B = VOLUME ONE
    Drive C + D = VOLUME TWO
What you put on those volumes is of course up to you and easy to do.
A system really only needs to be backed up "as needed" like before you add or update or install anything.
/Users can be backed up hourly, daily, weekly schedule
    Media files as needed.
    Things that hurt performance:
    Page outs
Spotlight - disable this for boot drive and 'scratch'
SCRATCH: Temporary space; erased between projects and steps.
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/StandardRAIDlevels
(normally I'd link to Wikipedia but I can't load right now)
Disk drives are the slowest component, so tackling that has always made sense. Easy way to make a difference. More RAM only if it will be of value and used. Same with more/faster processors, or graphic card.

  • BIP and szending output to a printer

    Hi,
I am perusing the BIP documentation looking for how to print my report directly to a printer. The only reference I am seeing is to IPP. I must be missing something, because all I need to do is send my output to printers already defined on my server.
Please trell me how I can simply print to my already defined printer without setting up IPP.
    thx,
    Gary

    This would be a start:
    http://www.scantips.com/basics01.html
When you're talking about 300dpi art, in reality it should be 300ppi (pixels per inch). Below is a quote from that Scan Tips site:
Printer ink dots and image pixels are very different concepts, but both use the term dpi in their own way (dots per inch).
Inkjet printer dpi ratings refer to printer ink dots (the four colors of ink), which is NOT AT ALL the same thing as image pixels. These are such different concepts that some people think we should reserve the term dpi for those inkjet ink dots, and reserve use of ppi only for image pixels. Not a bad plan, except that this view fails to recognize real world usage.
In the quote above, when they say "Inkjet printer dpi ratings", it applies also to offset printing presses.

  • How to send output of a print  to a single pool in smartforms

    Hi,
when iam taking a an out put from the invoice all the output has to be send to a single pool .means if we give an invoice number in vf03 and issue the output and if we choose print then it will directly got to spool.but requirement is to store all the spool numbers on application server and finall we have to convert all these into single pdf and then we have to print that.
can any body tell me where to store these spool numbers and how we can send at a time to print
    help me pleases
    sasi

    Hi Sasi,
    Check the following:
Exporting the Contents of a Spool Request as a PDF File
    Use
You want to export the contents of a spool request as a PDF file to a directory of your choice, and print the file as required. The PDF file contains the print data in the format in which it would be output by the printer.
The following procedure is irrelevant for the PDF-based form printing integrated as of SAP Web Application Server 6.40, since a PDF file is already returned. See also Displaying and Printing PDF-Based Forms.
    Procedure
The PDF file is generated as follows with report RSTXPDFT4:
    1. Generate a spool request from the document to be printed.
    2. In transaction SE38, start report rstxpdft4.
    3. In the displayed window, enter the spool request number and the directory in which the PDF file is to be stored.
Leave the Download PDF File option selected.
    Choose Execute.
    4. In the next window, you can confirm or change the path in which the file is be stored.
    Save your entries.
    5. The system displays a log from which you can see whether the report was successfully performed.
You can then open the file from the directory and print it as required.
Constraints·        The PDF conversion only supports true bar codes for Smart Forms, which were generated with the new bar code technology. In all other cases, the bar code is only simulated.
    ·        PDF conversion, especially of ABAP lists, is slower and is therefore not suitable for mass printing. However, you can speed up the conversion to PDF using the FASTLISTCONV option in report RSTXPDF3.
    ·        The font selection for ABAP lists is predefined in the PDF converter and cannot be changed.
For more information about constraints, see SAP Note 323736 in the SAP Service Marketplace.

  • How to get black text in Aperture for offset printing?

I have a lot of text in my Aperture Books.
60 pages is like 300USD plus from Apple store!
Offset printing for 1000 copies is 3 USD each (and I am happy with that lower quality).
This is what my printer says:
The files for offset print generally should be prepared slightly different
    then for digital printing.
    I'm talking about the text.
Each black text (on the cover, inside pages, numbers of pages) should be
prepared in one black colour. Now is separated on 4 colours. Of course we can print it as it is but I'm sure that the final effect will
be not good. The black letters will be "fuzzy".
Is it possible to change some settings? (I get the same in Pages when I create PDF:s)

    Hi, Stefan
I would suggest talking directly with the person you're going to deliver to and ask them exactly how they want it delivered, for example, fonts, pdf type... they usually have a spec sheet you deliver to and then pick the PDF from the print options in Aperture.

  • Resolution of Pages PDF for offset printing

I'm making a brochure for my wife's company. I've already made it in Photoshop (on my PC). I've duplicated it in Pages (tri-fold template). The pdf made in PS is about 25MB. The pdf made by pages is about 1.3MB. The printer wants files that are 350ppi. And now that I think of it, they also want them in the CMYK color space. Pretty sure Pages won't do that. Anyway, anyone made a document that was printed by a service (offset press)?
    Dave
    in Maine

I'd agree with what Peter says but for a possible few points.
    1. As you have calibrated monitors, you presumably have a spectrophotometer and a monitor calibration / monitor characterisation package. The package should autoinstall the ICC profile for the state of the display and set the ColorSync Utility and the Display control panel correctly. However, take care that you don't override these settings manually. The typical mistake is to use the display profile as the profile for colour correction. The reason this is a mistake is that your display typically has a smaller colour space than your offset printing condition, except if you are printing on lowend gray newsprint or lowend gray magazine paper as in US SWOP. For any half-decent printing gamut, use a larger colour correction space such as ECI-RGB or AdobeRGB or if you are digital then PhotoGamutRGB by the pro photographers in Germany. If you can't define a colour in the colour correction space you can't define the colour in the output space - you have to have the colour to be able to print the colour.
    2. In using the PDF/X-3 workflow, check with your printer for the bleed box and trim box. If you don't have to have transparency, try staying away from it in your design. The idea is that PDF is output to a determinate imaging area for the page itself, which you define in Page Setup, but printing processes have different needs of additional space and this additional space is customisable. If you do have transparency, set the transparency flattening appropriately in the PDF/X-3 dialogue. Finally, talk to your printer about the printing condition and determine if there is a house printing condition for which an ICC printing profile is available or if the shop supports ISO 12647 in which case you can get prebuilt ICC profiles at www.eci.org and the measurement data itself to build your own gamut mapping and black generation at www.color.org which is the home of the International Color Consortium.
Probably a bit rambling, sorry about that.

  • Questions regarding *dump_dest parameters and fast_recovery_area

    Hello,
I just installed a fresh new 11.2.0.2 Database on Solaris 10.
Everything straightforward on the parameter side!!! I tried custom install as well as general purpose template. When installing with DBCA, I set every parameters around DB Name in lowercase name.
With this, questions are popping in my mind regarding some parameters after installation.
First, %dump_dest parameters contains in path, two times the db name (ocpdb in my case):

core_dump_dest                 /u01/app/oracle/diag/rdbms/ocpdb/ocpdb/cdumpIs it normal to have ..../rdbms/dbname/dbname/..... as path, with dbname/dbname ??? Why?
Second, the question regarding the directory structure under fast_recovery_area (new term for flash_recovery_area). The directory structure:
    oracle@enalab13:/u01/app/oracle/fast_recovery_area$ ls -l
    total 2
    drwxr-x--- 2 oracle oinstall 512 2010-10-28 19:53 ocpdb
    drwxr----- 5 oracle oinstall 512 2010-10-29 07:44 OCPDB
    oracle@enalab13:/u01/app/oracle/fast_recovery_area$ ls -l ocpdb
    total 9528
    -rw-r----- 1 oracle oinstall 9748480 2010-10-31 21:09 control02.ctl

drwxr----- 3 oracle oinstall 512 2010-10-29 07:43 backupsetWhy am I having a subdir with dbname in uppercase AND in lowercase? Should I specify dbname in uppercase at db creation to have all files under the same directory, or in lowercase? Or, is it normal?
I want to know how to do it well before reinstalling a fresh database.
    Thanks
    Bruno
