2009 MacBook Pro battery charger

I'm moving house and have inadvertently packed my MacBook Pro charger so am going to buy a new one to get me buy. It was brought new in 2009 so need to get the relevant charger however having looked online it looks like a bit of a minefield!
My question is: will any MacBook charger work or do I need a particular one?
I'm going to get a genuine apple one but am hoping to get one on the cheap as I think they are £65.00 in the apple store!
I'm grateful for any advice x

Buy the genuine one, only genuine one from Apple.
Third party chargers seem to create problems.
Best.

  • How long should my macbook pro battery charge last before needing to be recharged

My macbook pro goes from 100% fully charged to zero in one day of light use.  Is that normal?  It seems to hold a charge for less time now than in the past.  Do I need a new battery?  Thanks, Gina

Watching video depletes the battery faster than typing a letter. My MBP battery will go down from 100% to about 65% (sometimes down to 50%)  in about 3 - 4 hours if I do nothing but browse this site and possibly watch a short video. It also depends on the screen brightness settings and a host of other things. If you only use it for 2 hours, then there is a problem and I'd take it to your nearest Genius Bar for a diagnosis.

  • 2009 MacBook Pro - Battery at only 87% capacity after 5 months?

    Hello,
I purchased my MacBook Pro in November. System Profiler and CoconutBattery report my battery capacity at 4756 mAh, or 87% of the initial 5450 mAh capacity. I've followed the steps to calibrate my battery twice over the past two weeks, which brought it up one percent from 86% to 87%. I've done, apparently, 82 charge cycles.
Is there a problem with my battery? I don't have AppleCare, but am assuming that a battery replacement is the kind of thing covered under warranty without it.

It is definitely on the low side for a battery in an MBP13, nusilver. These batteries are rated to 1000 cycles at 80% of original capacity (compared to SU's older model which is rated for 300 cycles at 80% capacity). My own MBP 13 , after just over 100 cycles since August last year, is still sitting on over 98%.
They may not be prepared to change it until it drops below the "official" figure of 80%, but I'd certainly take it in for testing to an Apple Store or AASP. A battery that has lost capacity at this sort of rate is likely to fail a "stress test" in which case I suspect they will replace it immediately anyway.
    Cheers

  • MacBook Pro Battery/Charging Issues

I have an early 2008 15'' MBP with 2.4 ghz Intel Core 2 Duo processor and 2gb of RAM that I bought in August of 2008.
In late 2011, I bought a brand new battery for it because the battery would only last for around an hour.  For a month or so, the new battery worked fine, but then I started to see that it said "not charging".  I took it to the store and they replaced the battery because it was still within warranty.  Again, the computer worked for a month or so, but again has started saying "not charging" again.  At this point, I'm not sure what to do.  Unless by a fluke I have two bad batteries in a row, it seems as though the computer might be the problem.  Thoughts?
    Also, FYI:
-I've reset the SMC and that did nothing
-I cleaned out both the mag safe area and the connector area on the battery
-I've tried shoving the battery in harder
-I'm not sure if this is relevant, but in 2010, Apple took it and repaired something on the logic board (i think).  I can't remember what exacly they did, but they did tell me that whatever they fixed was a known problem with my model.
    -The charger is brand new
Thanks in advance for the help!!

Don't be bashful, go to the Apple store with your receipt and have the battery checked out.  You may very well have won/lost the bad battery lottery.
    Ciao.

  • Mid 2009 macbook pro battery is dead and fan is constantly ramped up (not due to heat). Would installing a new battery fix the fan problem?

Battery icon has an "x" over it and I need to have my laptop plugged in to be on. I've ordered a new battery to install, but I was wondering if it's possible that something else might be causing the fan to be on over drive constantly. I've tried resenting the SMC and the PRAM, but nothing has stopped the fans from running at higher than normal speeds.

If you've updated to Mavericks, you'll either need to use the original install DVD containing the AHT, or download the right one from Apple's servers, then replace the hidden /System/Library/CoreServices.diagnostics   folder.
I think that replacing the battery is likely to stop the fan problem anyway.

  • Mid 2009 17" MacBook Pro battery shutdown issue when waking from sleep.

My unibody 17" MacBook Pro occasionally shuts down on waking from sleep when it isn't plugged in.
When I open the lid to wake it I can hear the hard drive and fans starting to spool, and then the next second it's off and silent. The laptop doesn't mind being turned on again after it does this and might go a week without doing it again, equally it might do it next time I try and wake it from sleep. It does this regardless of battery charge level.
coconutBattery says the battery still has 86% of its designed capacity, and I haven't noticed anything else untoward regarding battery charging or performance when in use.
So my question is two fold:
    1) Does it sound like the battery's internal processor is malfunctioning, or could it be something else?
    2) If it is the battery's internal processor, will replacing the battery replace the processor, or are they fitted separately (in defference to the 'internal' part of its name)?
    Cheers,
    James
nb. just in case it makes any difference, the laptop is a 17" Mid-2009 MacBook Pro, 2.8GHz Core 2 Duo with 4Gb Ram running OSX 10.7.3

    James
I have had issues when i press the space bar from sleep, sometimes it wakes but others i'm forced to power it on with the power button.
Is this similar to anything you've experianced?
Its so inconsistantly these days, but i'm also connected to an external screen.

  • Macbook Pro battery not charging after getting new charger

Dog ate through my Macbook pro's charger, so I went to the apple store and bought a new charger.  The big one, that states it is for Macbook Pros.  85w, I think?
Anyway.  The Pro runs on the charger, but its battery is not charging.
I suppose it is possible the battery just up and died, but that would be a heck of a coincidence that it happened the moment I got a new adapter.
Do all adapters labelled for macbook pros charge all macbook pro batteries?

I had recently the same issue : my battery didn't want to charge anymore. I bought a new charger. Same problem. The battery didn't want to charge (a message near the battery icon at top right of the screen : "battery is not charging").
I tried the SMC thing. Ever the same problem.
I checked I got the latest firmware for my MacBook Pro Unibody mid-2009 (with the non-removable battery). I got it.
My battery was less than 2 years old and got only 138 cycles.
And the green light on the charger was not so shining as usual.
Before going to an Apple Store, I just tried to clean my MacBook Pro power connecter.
    And... It works !
The Power connector was just dirty.
Now my battery is charging again.

The firmware update corrects an error that may occur, however the techs would have checked the condition of the battery prior to installing a new one.  If the battery was questionable, the firmware update was really not too important.
You can check the battery condition by going to the apple, left side of the menu bar, About This Mac, More Info, System Report, Hardware, Power and see what it says about Cycle Count, Condition, Capacity: Condition anything but Normal needs to be checked and may need to be replaced.
The cycle count of 1,000 charge cycles is the typical life of a Lithium-Ion battery, the point at which the capacity drops to 80% of the as built capacity.

  • HT204347 Do you connect the charger in the MacBook Pro battery damage if using device ?

Do you connect the charger in the MacBook Pro battery damage if using device ?
i am sorry i not good speak english

Provided you are using the correct charger for your Mac (13" have a 65 watt charger, 15" and 17", an 85 watt charger), it has enough capacity to power the computer for normal tasks, and the leftover power can charge the battery at the same time. If you are doing something very intensive, there may not be leftover power, but the Mac will take power from the battery if needed. Once the battery is fully charged, the pilot light in the charger plug will change from orange to green and no further charge will be applied to the battery.
You can use your Mac plugged to the charger with no damage to the battery or the computer.

  • My macbook pro battery will not hold charge

My macbook pro battery will not charge. The laptop will only turn on after it has been plugged in to charge, and when unplugged it automatically dies. When plugged in the battery indicator is green and the top right corner of the screen says "Not charging". I left town for a week with the laptop off and I came back in town and it won't charge. What can I do to fix this?

If you are under warranty call Apple and get a case number.

  • My MacBook Pro battery is empty and won't charge, but charger is fine

My MacBook Pro battery is empty and won't charge. I did the PRAM reset when there was still some power left in the battery. The charger indicator light doesn't come on when I connect it to MacBook Pro, BUT it works just fine with my old white Mac book. This happened a few times before, and unplugging and plugging the adapter into the MacBook pro helped. Now nothing happens no matter how many times I reset the charger. Is there anything else I can do?

More than likely you need a new battery.

It's clear that the battery has got enough capacity to work correctly, so something happens with the MagSafe port or its charger. If you have another charger, try it, and if not, take the MacBook and the charger to an Apple Store or reseller. It's better to do this as we don't know if the problem is in the charger or in the MacBook Pro

As you are aware, batteries (no matter what manufacturer) are consumable devices and is only covered for one year (barring any type of abuse).  With your purchase date being in 2007, this would not be covered under your AppleCare extended service plan.
Suggest you make an appointment for your local Apple Genius Bar and they can perform a Battery & Adapter test.  You can always start the process by contacting AppleCare (1.800.APL.CARE) and log down your case number after you have completed your discussions with them, so when you get to the Genius Bar, it will save you time.  At that point they will be able to determine if the battery is defective and commence the replacement process.  Include your case number in the notes section of your Genius Bar appointment form.  This tests will check your MagSafe adapter and battery at the same time and takes about a couple of minutes if that. Hope this helps guide you through the process.
    Cheers,
    Pete
