2010 Mini random freezes

My wife upgraded to a 2010 Mini (2.4GHz) early this month and she has started have random freezes where everything stops and you have to power cycle the mini to get it running. You don't even get a beachball, it just stops. It started late last week as an occasional thing and by Wed. evening it was every 30 minutes. I spent spent Wed and Thursday evenings doing all the normal stuff:
1. Disconnected the external hard drive (my suspected cause due to some TM backup warnings)
2. Zapped the Pram
3. Started from system disc & repaired permissions (4 times)
4. Ran diagnostics which said no problems.
5. Did the SMC reset.
6. Ran Onyx with almost all the options turned on.
Running Onyx seems to do the most good and I thought we were past the problem. This morning, another crash. My wife had iChat and Firefox open and while on the web everything froze again and after 10 minutes she use the power button to turn the Mini off and on.
We did swap out the 2x1GB for 2x2GB from OWC but that seems to be testing fine. There is a USB hub attached but I swapped the hubs from my rig to hers and the one from hers is working fine with my 2009 Mini.
At this point, I'm stumped.

Upgraded from a Core Duo Mini. She does have a few things (mostly older games) that might use Rosetta. However, the problem doesn't seem to be confined to those items. That has been one of the puzzling things, there doesn't seem to be rhyme or reason to the freezes. No one piece of software (except maybe iChat) is running when this happens, she doesn't keep a lot of browser windows or different programs open in the background, and she didn't have this problem with the old machine.
Her typical configuration is to have Firefox, mail and iChat on in the background and either a game or Preview and/or OpenOffice in front. The games are Plants vs Zombies, Luxor, World of Goo, or similar stuff.
I did notice when I did the permissions repair that the majority of the corrections seemed to be in things relating to Java.

  • Mac Mini randomly freezing

My Mac Mini (late 2012) is less than two months old and has started to randomly freeze for no reason.
The sequence of events is always the same - namely as I am moving between documents, photos or web pages I get the freeze then about 10 seconds later the mouse will freeze leaving me in that unenviable position of having to switch the Mac Mini off and then back on.
I know that it has to something with the Mac Mini as I have reduced my hardware configuration to:
    Mac Mini
    27" LED Cinema Display
    Apple USB keyboard
    Apple Type A1152 Mouse
    Time Capsule
Linksys WAG160N ADSL Modem/Router (configured in bridge mode to allow Time Capsule to act as main router)
Even with this minimal hardware configuration I still get random freezing.
I have already tried taking the Time Capsule out of the configuration and plug the Modem straight into the Mac Mini which worked for the better part of a day befor the freezing returned.
One other thing I have noticed is that once I reboot the Mac Mini it just carries out a normal boot up sequence in that I do not get any popup windows asking me to report a crash to Apple, although Firefox or Safari both report that this has happened.
Any help from those with far more technical ability than I would be greatly appreciated
    Thanks in advance
    Les

Thanks for the remind Linc - spent an hour on the phone with a support tech who in the end made an appointment for me with the Genius Bar in my local Apple Store.
I played along although I was baffled at this turn of events.
Crux was when I turned up for the appointment there was no mucking about - they took my Mac Mini and ten minutes later presented me with a brand new one with all of my software transferred. Fingers crossed it hasn't gone wrong yet.
Once again thanks to all for the suggestions - the help I received explains why this community is so good.

  • Mid-2010 iMac randomly freezing after last Windows 7 update.  Help!  I am a teacher and have 50 computers all behaving the same way.

I am a teacher and have 50 mid-2010 iMacs running Windows 7 in my classroom.  The computers did a Windows 7 automatic update on or around April 15, 2014.  After that, each computer randomly freezes.  Some are worse than others.  Most of the computers freeze when a USB drive is plugged in and also when a pop-up shows up on the screen - especially the Java update.  I have installed the most current Bootcamp drivers and run several anti-virus program searches.  I've also tried the Microsoft Fix-it program and almost everything.  Uninstalling the updates did not help.  Can anyone help me out?

based on what you wrote this  doesn't make sense
use system restore to rollback the machine prior to this update

  • My mac mini will randomly freeze up and my scrren will get multi-colored rectangle boxes

my mac mini will randomly freeze up and my scrren will get multi-colored rectangle boxes all across the screen. the only option i have left to do is reboot my whole system by the power button. has anyone ever encountered this problem?

  • IMac (i3 2010) random freezing and now with 3 beeps

Hi I have a 21" iMac i3 base model with 8Gb of Ram (see below).
Ever since I got the mac about 10 months ago it has been randomly freezing up, becoming completely unresponsive to any input (keyboard mice etc), and can only be fixed by a hard reboot (holding down power button).
It can happen while I am away at lunch and I come back to find it frozen on the screen saver. Other times I'm just browsing the web (nb has happens with safari, firefox, and chrome). While others times I have been using the system to its fullest. There never seems to be a reproducible way of triggering it. I can go for a week without issue, and then it can happen 6+ times a day, and they go back to being fine again for awhile. Although it has been getting progressively worse over time and more constant.
I have tried repairing permissions (disk utility and onyx). Defraged the drive (drive genius), run TechTools pro and it passed all the tests. I don't have access to the orginal disks (work iMac) so running the AHT is not possible, as is a clean instal.
I updated to 10.6.8 this week, and now when it freezes, it is now accopained by 3 loud beeps...pause...3 beeps etc etc.
This suggests that it could be a memory problem, but I have never had a problem during the boot up process, and as I said it has passed the memory test on both TechTools6 and Rember, I'm not sure if this is the case.
Because the system completely frezzes, there is no log or error reports created, meaning that pin-pointing the issue or even having proof for the tech-guys/Apple is difficult.
Has anyone got any suggestions on a fix, or how I might be able to get an error report, or how I could induce the problem on que.
    Thanks heaps

Ok so it definitely appears to be the RAM. I have found a way to reproduce the crashing....Running Prime95. Its normally takes about 15-30min on the stresstest to get the system to lock up.
But here is the strange thing. It only seems to work if I have the full 8Gb installed.
I have run each 2Gb stick by itself without issues.
And then run 6Gb, changing the empty slot each time, and again no crashing.
I found the following thread also has similar issues, with the RAM the most likely cause.
    https://discussions.apple.com/message/15610565#15610565
I can discount USB,wifi, bluetooth as I tried this and still managed to get a crash.
But I did have screen sharing on so I am now testing if I can run the 8Gb with this disabled.
Will report back with my findings.

  • Random freezes with kernel 2.6.34 and xorg 1.8

The other day I upgraded the kernel to version 2.6.34 and at the same time xorg-server to 1.8 (along with input drivers and video drivers). From that moment, I suffer from random freezes, the system is completely locked up; the screen doesn't blank, though. The system appears to be perfectly fine, but after some minutes it will freeze.
As far as I can remember, the freezes only occur when using a webbrowser. Chromium is my default browser, but also Firefox and Konqueror caused the system to freeze completely when I want to open a webpage. Other network programs such as irssi can run for hours and they didn't seem to cause any havoc.
At first I thought this might be caused by some instability in the latest xf86-video-ati driver, so I downgraded back to xorg-server 1.7. Still the same symptoms, so I am pretty sure now there's something in the kernel. So I went back to xorg-server 1.8 and downgraded the kernel to 2.6.33. So far, the system hasn't let me down, yet. Also, I uninstalled the madwifi packages on my system so I'm using the ath5 drivers shipped with the kernel. That change doesn't seem to make a difference.
I am not exactly sure what exactly could cause this, there's no trace in any log file to be found. My suspicion is that it's network related.
The hardware is a Thinkpad T42 with an ATI Radeon Mobility 9600 (r300) chip and an Atheros wireless card.
Anyone else with similar experiences with this hardware? I can't think of a way how to properly debug this. I know I can bisect, but that's time consuming and perhaps it's quicker to ask around first before I walk down that road. Any suggestions are welcome on how to track this down.

The last time I used arch was to do the updates, just got back to using it and crash!
Mine boots up to the point of the UDev events, but when I change the boot line to use /dev/sdxx instead of the /dev/disk/by-id/ xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx I go to the next step where the video mode changes, then it freezes.  Half the other time it would stop at udev and either blank out totally or just stop.  I don't even get a full bootup (standard or fallback).  My other archs boot just fine.
Downgraded the kernel to the immediate previous kernel before .34 and booted upto the point of the window manager, so I think it's a problem with either the video driver or the xorg, because they were both updated at the same time, but the kernel may be a bit buggy also. (Of course, using the chroot and the arch install CD appropriate for my arch).  Also, it only shows up on one screen on the dual headed setup, which makes obvious which one isn't working.
When the kernel calls the videomode (same one that can be called from kernel command line), that's when it is dying.  The only machine I'm having trouble with is the same one that will be the only one to do any updates, maybe this will fix the problem.
The updates didn't make any difference.  It still hangs at the videomode change.  Was able to get a read out one time that one of the video cards had wrong ROM contents?
Have had to use the top level ftp.archlinux.org just to get the most recent updates, without having to fish through mirrors.
My presumption is that the kernel/video hardware is just not working in console mode or the graphics mode.
Strangely enough both of my hardwares, one is a mobile intel 945 and the other is a desktop 945.  The mobile works without a hitch, and the desktop freezes.

  • 13" Macbook pro random freezing after upgrading hard drive.

    i have a 2010 mbp 13" 2.4
I upgraded the hhd from the 250 to a 320 5400 RPM drive i cleared the cache did a clean install of osx 10.6 grabbed all the updates and then rolled my time machine to restore all my files.
But now it randomly freezes for about 4-7 seconds. It's extremely annoying and i can't figure out why. Short of a clean install any ideas on what might fix this?
    Thanks

The AHT does test the graphics chips. Run the extended version and see if anything shows up in the form of an error code. Also, there may be a crash log in Console. Try to run something processor intensive so the Mac freezes, and then run the AHT. Heat could be a factor.
Do you have access to an Apple Store? If so, make an appointment at the Genius Bar and bring in your Mac for evaluation. They would probably have a more comprehensive hardware test they could run. If you get any error codes, bring those along.
It sounds like you could have some sort of hardware problem here. Since you are under warranty, it might be time to let Apple diagnose and fix it. It sounds like you may have had video issues during the first week of ownership with the original hard drive, and these may actually be independent of the hard drive.
    Good luck!
    Good luck!

  • MSI P35 Neo-F (MS-7360): Computer randomly freezes while playing games

    Hi there,
I have reached the end of my technical knowledge right now and I'm not even sure if this area of the forum is appropriate. The problem:
While playing higher-end games like Crysis 2, Anno 1404, Mass Effect 2 etc. my computer randomly freezes and the last few milliseconds of sound are being looped on my speakers (kind of like a buzzing sound).
By "freezing" I mean that my computer becomes unresponsive to any action other than pressing the Reset-Button or holding down the Power-Up-Button (no reaction to Ctrl+Alt+Del, Alt+F4, Alt+Tab, no mouse movement... you get it).
There's no exact timing as to when these freezes occur. The fastest freeze happened after less than a minute of playing a game, slowes one (just today after switching to my newer case with better cooling) took about 2 hours.
This freeze only occurs while my System is under load. No freezes while browsing the web, using office programs, listening to music or watching videos.
    System Specs:
        Mainboard: MSI P35 Neo-F (MSI-7360)
        CPU: Intel Core2Quad Q6600 @2.4GHz
        RAM: 4x 1GB DDR2-800 Corsair XMS2
Graphics: Gainward GeForce GTX 560 Ti, 1GB GDDR5 VRAM
PSU: Antec High Current Gamer 620W (upgraded from Xilence XP600, 600W)
New CPU Cooler: Arctic Freezer 13 Pro (upgraded from OEM Intel Boxed Cooler)
New Case: Zalman Z9 Plus w/ 4x 120 mm Fans (Upgraded from a Case with only 1x 250mm side Fan)
        2 Western Digital HDD (1x 2TB, 1x320 GB)
1 DVD Reader/Burner (unimportant for that error I guess)
        OS: Windows 7 Ultimate 64-Bit
        2 Screens: 1x 24" Asus VS248H and 1x 21" LG Flatron Wide W2240T
Since this error is bugging me for quite a while now and since this is not the first forum I'm trying to get help from, here's a list of steps i already took to get rid of it, obviously to no good use:
reinstalled games where the freeze occurred
updated all Drivers (including cleaning old versions in safe mode; also tried older drivers)
        updated BIOS to v1.A0
        Reinstalled Windows
bought new Case and CPU Cooler to improve Air Flow/Cooling
checked Seating of all components (took out, cleaned, reapplied thermal grease where neccessary, re-inserted)
cleaned old case of dust (obviously no problem in the new case, which is 2 days "old")
ran 7 sequences of Memtes86+ without any errors
ran Prime95 without any errors for about 45 Minutes
ran Furmark for 15 Minutes under full load (burn-in test) without any problems, even though my graphics card hit the 100°C frequency-cut level
ran Furmark and Prime95 simultaneously without any problems
took records of component temperatures and system voltages without noticing anything unusual (at least not after i switched to the newer PSU, which is about 1 Month old - yet didn't resolve the problem)
tested with cyclic removal of 1 RAM device to further rule out RAM malfunction
tested with only 2 RAM devices in dual channel mode (Slots 1 and 3)
tried to reduce RAM clock (800 MHz --> 667 MHz) to no avail
checked S.M.A.R.T. values of HDDs, no issues reported
        tested without any background programs
raised/lowered voltages to RAM, CPU and Chipset in BIOS to increase logic circuit stability/decrease heat production
I need to mention: After I transferred my system to the new case, i was able to play longer than average compared to my old case. So I am guessing that improper cooling was part of the problem, yet improving cooling obviously didn't resolve it.
Since these freezes are really annoying and nobody could help me resolve this so far, I'm hoping to find some new ways of narrowing down the problem or even getting rid of it here.
    Regards
    Sebb

Lets be realistic. A system with a 560TI is recommended to have a around 31Amps under full load, a CX500 would be sufficient.
Have you monitored your CPU and memory utilisation ?
As suggested before, test the GPU in another computer to see if the behaviour is the same.
Whew, I thought for a second there that my common sense had left me when I saw that 60-Amp-Post ^^
Yes, I monitored CPU and RAM usage, there is no recognizeable pattern to be seen and it almost never happens under full load.
I will see if a friend of mine can test my GPU on his computer, and I will test it underclocked right away.
Though one more question regarding that: Should I only underclock GPU Core Clock or both Core and RAM clock?

  • IPod randomly freezes when playing tunes

My Ipod 30gb randomly freezes during a song. Sometimes it freezes for a few seconds and sometimes it can freeze for a couple of minutes. It then just carries on playing.
It is not always the same song and can include songs purchased from Itunes as well as CD's downloaded - i.e. it is totally random.
All of the songs play perfectly on Itunes. I have only about half filled the iPid so am not really in the market to upgrade.
It has only started doing this about for the last two months.
Could some dust or something have got into the IPod or could it be a battery issue ( although I try to keep it at full ).
I have downloaded the lastest updates of software ( 1.3 ) and always click on the update software buttom when am synching. I have also done a restore and all the other troubleshooting bits to no avail...
    Help....

    Hi,
Well my friend got me an ipod 20gb 4th gen from ebay. It randomly froze and unfroze the eventually crashed and the HDD had errors, i couldnt connect it to pc it kept falling and showinfg errors but it sometimes loads and plays songs and frezzes but anyway i maneged to get it so it plays songs and restore it now i need to borrow a friends wall charger to finish its restore.... Listen to the hdd it should just be a smooth wirr if it wirs up and down like mine did (e.g. spin up and then off) its a HDD issues and u need to fix it soon. if under warranty take it to apple or pay to fix it. i have no idea how to solve it but this might help. try this..put it into diagnostic mode by resetting it, and then holding select and the back arrow select all test and it will tell you if has issues.
diognosis test and what they mean
    A. 5 IN 1: This runs the following 5 tests at once (J through N as listed below): LCM, SDRAM, RTC, FLASH/CHECKSUM, and FIREWIRE/FW ID. If you have a 3G iPod, at the end of the test, your buttons will now play a series of sound effects.YOU MUST PRESS ALL BUTTONS WHOTH IN % SECS SO IT CAN CHECK THEM
    B. RESET: Can your iPod reset? Run this test and find out.
    C. KEY: After you start this test, you need to press all the buttons on your iPod within 5 seconds. If you don't do it fast enough, it will fail.
    D. AUDIO: Plug in headphones, but don't expect an electronic rendition of Pink Floyd's Dark Side of the Moon. This test checks the audio subsystem. You will see a message that says "0X00000000 DONE" if your iPod passed the test.
    E. REMOTE:
This will test your iPod's Remote if you have one. Plug it in or the test result will be "RMT FAIL".
F.FIREWARE: Checks your iPod's FireWire port. A successful completion of the test will return "FW PASS".
    G. SLEEP: Will put your iPod to sleep. You will need to reset your iPod to wake it back up.
    H. A 2 D: Tests the iPod's power. Your results should look something like this: "3.7V 0X000000E2 CHG OK FW 1 BAT 1". The results will be different depending if your iPod is plugged into your computer, a wall outlet or is just running off battery power.
    I. OTPO CNT: Tests your scroll wheel. Results are returned in hexadecimal.
    J. LCM: The LCM is your iPod's screen. Keep pressing the "Select" button to toggle through several pattern tests.
    K. RTC: Tests the iPod's built-in "Real Time Clock".
    L. SDRAM: The RAM memory test. Hopefully it will tell you "PASS"
    M. FLASH: Your iPod has built-in Flash memory that stores firmware information. This test will tell you what Firmware version you have installed.
    N. OTPO or
Wheel A2D: Tests the A2D (analog to digital) input of your iPod's scroll, touch or click-wheel. You need to reset your iPod to exit this test.
    O. HDD SCAN: Scans your iPod's hard drive. This is a great way to see if you have a healthy iPod. This test will take a few minutes so be patient.
    P. RUN IN: Tests your iPod's chip sets continuously.
Try all test and try another hard rest and resotre even though you have if game andd no how open ipod dissconnect battery to hdd lead and leavee for 20 mins or discharge ipod and charge then see if it fixes it or clean ipod out being carfull not to break or touch anything
    hope this helps....

Edit: Setting DRAM Voltage to 1.65V instead of 1.5V seems to help a lot!

    ______ Original post __________
Like others I've been plagued by random freezes in using my newly built system, based on the GD65.
    What happens:
    1/6 times BSOD and restart.
5/6 times a simple freeze, with, if present, (analog) sound output relooping the last second of output or producing a more garbled stream of sound.
    When does it happen:
    - 1/5 times when doing nothing (save for uTorrent running in the background). I.e. returning to my machine, it won't respond to input, or if the screen has stayed on, shows the machine to be in a frozen state.
    - 4/5 times when browsing, and especially when watching flash-based movies (flash 10.1 prerelease). That might be a biased memory, though, as these freezes always produce very _memorable_ sound relooping.
The system can be stable in continuous operation (including uTorrent) from anywhere between 1 hour to 4 days, before the abovementioned occurs.
    The system:
    - MSI P55-GD65 (Foxconn socket, BIOS 1.5)
    - i7 860
    - 2x 2GB Corsair Dominator 1600MHz CAS 8 --> CMD4GX3M2A1600C8 (DIMM1 and DIMM3)
    - Corsair HX850W
    - Intel 80GB Intel X25M 2,5" SATA (IRST 9.5 drivers installed)
    - 2x Samsung 1000GB Samsung HD103SJ
    - Windows 7 64bit Professional (on SSD)
    I've tried the following:
    - Reseating the CPU.
As far as I could see there were scuff marks on all pads and in the socket, no pins were bent or seemed abnormal. I must say that during the reseating I was struck by the very shoddy-feeling latching mechanism.
    - Varying BIOS settings. Many, from the most default to custom OC, to OC Genie based settings. Interestingly, the non OC'd settings seemed to perform the worst.
Looking back into the various BIOS profiles I stored, I see that I haven't tried (d'oh!) the combination of:
    - A higher DRAM voltage
    - Relaxed DRAM timings
    - Standard base clock
I'm going to try this and see if that will make my system run stable. I'll update somewhere later this week.
In the meanwhile, I'm very interested as to what people think concerning the times at which the freezes occur (for me and for quite a few other accounts I found scattered around). From what I can gather:
    - These freezes almost never occur when the machines are stressed.
    - They seem to occur more frequently when users are using their browsers.
    - Vista and Win7 seem to suffer from more freezes than XP installations (there is an account of a dual-booting guy stating this) with XP installations generating more BSODs instead of freezes.
    - Memtesting generally reveals no issues whatsoever, nor does prime95-testing.
I can't get my head around this behaviour. You'd expect that with hardware that is on the edge, when it comes to margins in voltages and timings and what not, stress testing would surely push it over that edge. Are we dealing with voltage fluctuations or certain patterns of memory usage that cause these issues?
Again, very interested what your take is on this.

Hi everyone! Let me contribute in diagnosing the problem.
I've bought P55-GD65 in november'09 (BIOS version 1.0) along with OCZ DDR3-1600 Gold 2*1Gb Kit. Installed Win7 32-bit. Every few hours I was getting BSOD with something like "BUGCODE_USBDRIVER". I thought this was Windows fault, that's why I've tried Vista SP2 (error at first boot) and XP (hang while copying files). In Win7 several times I've seen corrupted screen, Aero switching off and sluggish performance. The error became less frequent when I set memory to 1333Mhz and raised voltage to 1.65v as there was only 1.5v in the SPD. And there wasn't dependency whether one module was used or both two — BSODs were inevitable.
    Later I've tested one Rendition 2Gb DDR3-1333 module. 1T or 2T — infrequent BSODs/freezes.
I've upgraded to BIOS v1.4 and installed two ordinary Hynix 1333Mhz CL9 modules. A new BSOD "IRQ NOT LESS OR EQUAL" began to appear along with these weird freezes roughly twice a week. My PC became more usable and I decided to keep Hynix memory.
Two months with BIOS 1.5 were stable - only 2-3 BSODs, but I think that were application errors or faulty ATI driver. Memory was operating 1333@[email protected].
BIOS 1.6 brought back freezes. 3-6 times a week. The only positive aspect: 3.24 Gb was available for Windows against 2.99Gb in previous BIOS versions. 19.02.2010 I updated to v1.7. So far no freezes, errors.
    Short resume
Freezes and errors are appearing in Win7 32-bit with BIOS 1-1.4 & 1.6. Memory voltage, frequency can affect the periodicity of errors. I haven't tried OC Genie yet because of unstable PC operation in normal mode.
    My observations
Many hardware sites stated that there's no need for any cooling sinks or heatpipes for P55 chipset and any cooling system of tested mainboards were slightly warm. In my case, the heatpipes and sinks are hot most of time. Maybe this is a result of stock Intel cooler (2cm height)?
Also 6 power LEDs are constantly on, slightly blinking when watching HD video.
In 3D games (GTAIV, Mass Effect2, Tropico3, Burnout, Red Alert3) even for many hours playing — no freeze or BSOD.
The computer normally goes to S3 (hibernate) and resumes for several times a day.
The temperature of individual components is within reasonable limits.
I can confirm that after browsing FLASH-rich websites you should expect freeze in 30min. This time shortens while watching fullscreen avi-files afterwards.
    My config
    Windows 7 32-bit Ultimate
    Intel Core i7-860 (stock cooler) /MSI P55-GD65 / Hynix 2×2Gb PC3-10600 / Sapphire Radeon HD4850 512Mb (reference) / Samsung HD501LJ, SP1614C / LG GH20LS15 / K-World TV878RF Pro / Chieftec CFT-560-A12C / CoolerMaster Cosmos S
    HP LP2475w / Logitech MX Revolution / Genius KB21e / Canon Pixma iP4000 / Wacom Bamboo Fun A5
It seems to me that there's some electric power issue in P55-GD65. Maybe it's related to MOSFETs overheating? Or weird Vdroop setting? Or, the worst, critical fault in the board design? Or we've got defective samples...

  • My macbook pro late 2008 randomly freeze

Hi I recently upgrade my macbook pro Late 2008 by adding a 250 go Crucial SSD drive in the main harddrive spot. I also put a 1 To HDD in the place of the super drive.
Since then, my macbook randomly freeze. I can't see any link to any specific usage. It just happen for no reasons. I had to reboot by holding the power button.
    Thanks for your help!

Hi r.w.p & welcome to the forums...
Some or all of the following may be necessary - try in this order:
    1. Try resetting your PRAM/NVRAM ( http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1379?viewlocale=en_US ). If everything isn't fixed, then continue to follow the steps here including resetting your SMC ( http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1411 ) if necessary.
    2. Use Font Book to eliminate all bad and duplicate fonts.
    3. Reinstall (or install for the first time) the .6.1 and .6.2 updates by downloading and installing the combo updater ( http://support.apple.com/kb/DL959 ).
    4. Reinstall 10.6 using your Snow Leopard install DVD by installing Snow over Snow using the upgrade method. Test your system after returning to 10.6. If is good there, then you may not want to re-install the.6.1 & .6.2 updates - if you do, then use the combo updater again ( http://support.apple.com/kb/DL959 ).
Still no joy, take it to an Apple Store and ask staff there for assistance.

  • Random freezes-please, somebody, help me find a solution that works!

I feel a little stupid posting a new thread for what seems to be (at the moment) a rather common issue, but almost every related thread I've come across seems to pin the blame on different things, and I want to consolidate all that I know about what's going on in one place.
On January 5 I reinstalled Arch on the family computer in my house, and for the first few days it seemed to be working OK, but as I was getting everything installed and set up correctly, I started experiencing random freezes.  Every package has been up to date since this was a brand new install, and the whole reason I was reinstalling was because the old setup was really messy and on a really old hard drive.  The old setup didn't experience any of these issues, however, which rules out hardware issues (the current hard drive was in the system, it just wasn't used for /).  The computer passes memtest86+ and mprime stress tests.
First, the problem(s): random lockups.  These range from application lockups that still allow mouse movement, but not clicking, with the keyboard remaining accessible, to full X lockups which disable mouse and keyboard functionality.  The former have only occurred a handful of times while the latter occur much more often.  I don't have an ssh server set up on this computer to know whether it would respond to use that way, but my assumption is that, yes, it would.  This seems to be a rather prevalent issue right now, but like I said, a lot of people identify different causes and workarounds/fixes only work for some people.
A few weeks ago I looked around and everything I was finding suggested it was a video driver issue.  I was using xf86-video-ati, so I switched to xf86-video-vesa.  Things worked fine for about a day (which, for the record, is not uncommon; the problem seems to come and go, as for about a week the computer worked fine and then today I had four lockups in a row) but then it started to hang again.  It's not a video issue.  It's not a hardware issue.  It's either a Gnome/GDM issue or an Xorg issue, a combination of both, or something else that is conflicting with either of those three.
I found this thread about X hanging whenever one presses enter.  My issue seems to match the user in this thread (with it's corresponding bug report), because sometimes it hangs when I press enter—but only sometimes.  The majority of the crashes, by my estimation, have nothing to do with whether or not I press enter.  Often I (or someone else in my house) will simply click something and everything will freeze.
Beyond this I cannot really describe much else.  However, here is some additional info which might help diagnose the problem.
    From Xorg.0.log.old:
    Fatal server error:
Caught signal 3 (Quit). Server aborting
.xsession-errors doesn't seem to contain anything worth noting.
When booting X also launches on tty2 instead of tty7.  In the first few days after the install I seem to remember it launching on tty7 initially, but it's possible that my mind is playing tricks on me and this is not the case.  If it is I do not know what accounted for the change.  /etc/inittab is identical to the file on my personal PC which runs GDM and openbox, but which is experiencing no problems whatsoever, and X opens on tty7 on it (and which is also completely up to date).  At post #13 in this thread there is a suggested edit for /etc/gdm/custom.conf, but it does nothing for me; X still opens on tty2.
GDM is the last daemon listed in /etc/rc.conf.  I've tried loading the daemons before it backgrounded (with @) and also regularly (without), and neither makes a difference.  The freeze often occurs when logging in or switching users, but I must emphasize that for the most part the lockups are completely random.
I am really hoping to find a fix, and the sooner the better, because 6 people regularly use this computer and constant freezes are unacceptable to my mind.  I also fear that the exact same error has been occurring on my friends' business computer which I recently updated some packages on, since I've been getting emails about the computer locking up.  Of course with that one I could simply downgrade everything I just updated, even though it'd be tedious to do so.

change to lanuching gdm from your inittab using run-level 5

    both will resolve the issue.
Actually, how will running gdm from inittab help with this issue?
And I didn't understand what you meant by "remove agetty from tty2"
You know, I am pretty sure that the issue has to be with xorg. I was having this issue a lot a month ago, but then, a certain upgrade of xorg fixed the issue. I was fine for a few weeks. My computer never crashed. But, unfortunatly, a package in that same upgrade was broken and I ended up upgrading the system again a few weeks ago. xorg also upgraded at the same time. Now, my computer keeps crashing randomly and in random ways.
I think that the best thing to do is to keep up with the xorg updates, find one that works for your system and have pacman ignore all upgrades to xorg after that.
Actually, if anyone can tell me how to downgrade xorg to its state 3 weeks ago, it would be absolutely awesome.
    Thanks
Because if you use runlevel 5 you dont have agetty on TTY2 so it won't try and kill xorg all the bloody time
The problem is caused because GDM is starting so fast the XORG server it loads up checks for free VT's and finds TTY2 is empty and starts on it. THEN your inittab fires up agetty on TTY2.. which promptly causes hell to arrive in a handbag.
You really need to be less critical of people offering you advice.. and possibly even check what they have posted in the past.. like the threads from months ago dealing with this issue. (search is great you know)

  • Windows7, can't install, random freezes.

    Hey!
Just got a new computer, It worked fine in the beginning, no trouble installing Windows 7 Ultimate (32bit). After ~1 day random freezes started... I tried reformatting and reinstalling Windows 7 but the problem came back.
I tried reinstalling one more time but now I can't even install W7. It freezes at random points all the time, sometimes before the installation begins, sometimes when I chose which hdd to use, sometimes while expanding files.
Now I use Windows XP and it runs fine without any freezes but I would like to use W7...
I've tried a different PSU, GFX, DVD-reader and HDDs without any luck. 1 DDR3 in DIMM1 doesn't help, tried them both single channel.
-::- resetting CMOS and I've updated to BIOS 1.4, the problem is still there... but it works like a charm in XP.
    -::- 3 different Windows 7-versions (2x32bit 1x64bit) and also Vista 64bit doesn't work (haven't tried 32bit, but I'm sure it won't work)
-::- installing Windows 7 via USB-hdd and it doesn't boot (on my other computer it does, so it's bootable and I'm not doing it wrong)
-::- change from IDE to AHCI setting in BIOS, GreenPower Phase Control(From Auto to Disabled), Intel Turbo Boost Disabled
-::- with only PS2 Keyboard plugged in, no other device, I have nothing in the PCI-slots and not the MSi THX Quantum Wave blablabla connected...
-::- different SATA ports both blue and black, tried IDE DVD-reader.
-::- change DRAM voltage to alot of different values, max 1,65V min 1,4V
-::- load fail safe bios settings
NOTHING OF THIS WORKS... please help me:-)

The symptoms don't make much sense, to be honest.  Strange scenario you have there.  If there was a hardware problem, it would show itself in XP as well.  On the other hand:  When the system freezes on the Windows 7 Setup level for no apparant reason, it is hard to even blame driver problems of any sort.
Run Memtest86+ to be sure that there are no obvious memory problems behind this.
Also, disable ALL power saving features in BIOS Setup (C-States, EIST, C1E Support, Greenpower/APS features of the board) and also Spread Spectrum.
Have you tried running any more intense stress test applications under XP (Prime95, 3D Mark, Furmark) to check if you can trigger freezes by stressing the components somewhat more?
Do you have any other components to do some swap-out tests (e.g. different memory modules, PSU, video card, CPU)?
I've already ran Memtest and it showed nothing, forgot to write that above:p
Gonna try all powersaving features disabled now and if that doesn't work I'll do some stress tests with XP.
I have PSU, video card, and some hdds. No memory or CPU with same socket...
BTW:I t started Expanding Windows files and its at 26% atm:D:D:D:D:D::D:D

  • Random freezing on a Macbook Air?

    Hello,
I am encountering random freezing on my Macbook Air, that has started in the last few weeks.
    - Applications will suddenly crash at random points
    - Sometimes Lion will pop a translucent grey screen asking me to hold down a power button.
    - I can no longer relilably install software updates, it often crashes or reports the download corrupted. Sometimes I succeed after 3 or 4 attempts.
    - To try and verify it wasn't malware, I checked with Kapersky AV for Mac (it claims it is clean), and I also manually checked for Flashback (I'm not affected)
    - Web browser frequently randomly crash, and I can't run anything that involves 3D graphics
    - it still happens even if I disable startup apps
    - Sometimes I get the forever beachball and the top bar becomes corrupt or blank
    - There is no pattern to this, except some apps seem to crash more often than others
It feels like a "hardware" issue, due to its intermittency/unpredictability/non-repeatability.
I am wondering if either my RAM or CPU is defective?  Or is this something software?
It is a 2010 Macbook Air 11.6", a little more than a year old.   What are my recourse that would result in minimum wasted time:
Sometimes it goes for an hour with no problems (I can even run 3D) and might not be able to demonstrate in front of Apple.
Unfortunately, I did not have the foresight to get AppleCare, so I'll have to expend some time and/or money.
    What is least painful?
I first backup my personal files (mostly done, as it's mostly on various cloud services)
    1. Assume it's software: Attempt to reinstall OSX, cross fingers it doesn't happen again?    Run a few overnight 3D benchmark tests to 'burn it in' and verify it is not a hardware problem?
    2. or Purchase a new Macbook Air & then bring the old Air in, then resell the Air after it's repaired?  (Minimum downtime method, high cost method)
    3. or Apple Store & try to get it repaired/serviced.   (Lower cost method)
    4. or trade it in for a discounted refurbished 2011 Air?   (If the Apple Store does this sort of stuff)
    Thanks,
    Mark Rejhon

I am able to drag photos from iPhoto to Contacts on my MacBook Air. I resize the iPhoto window to make it smaller, open Contacts, select the Contact in question and click the Edit button at the lower right of the contact. I then drag the photo from iPhoto.
The step that I'm guessing that you might be missing is clicking the Edit button at the lower right of the contact.

  • Failing mid-2010 mini server drive - warranty?

I have a mid-2010 mini server - you know, the one with "server" class hard drives - and it started exhibiting dying behavior - it would freeze, or nearly so, and the logs reported all sorts of I/O errors. I scanned for bad blocks and out of the 500GB drive there were 765 bad blocks. I figure at this point I should just replace it, but that's $200 for the drive (Seagate 750GB hybrid) and $100 to install it because it's so hard to install in the mini.
Apple only provides a one year warranty. Drives often come with a longer warranty, though. So, is there a longer warranty for the drive itself?

765 bad blocks out of almost 1gig blocks is pretty small.
    (a 500 gig drive contains ~1gig, 512 byte blocks).
Suggest save all the data you can from it and
repartiton and erase with the write zeroes option.
This forces the drive to map out bad blocks.  Then
reinstall what ever was on the drive.
I had a similar situation and had found about 500
bad blocks.  Did the above and it has been working fine for
    over a year now.
Do what I have explained and avoid the unnecessary
hassle and cost.  If it doesn't work, then worry.
Sometimes blocks just go bad for any number of reasons
on any type of drive, even "server" grade.
Anyway, as to manufacturer warranty on the drive, not
sure how it works with drives that are OEM.
