24" Cinema - Geforce versus Radeon

So I'm ready to go get my 24" LED cinema screen next week. After reading numerous posts here I am confident the Geforce GT120 card will work in my early 2008 Mac Pro, even though Apple says it will not.
Question is this: I will be trading in my Radeon X1900 in favor of the Geforce GT120, is that like taking a step backward??

I can attest to the combination of the GEForce 120 + 24" LED Cinema Display + Early 2008 Mac Pro. It just works. The guys at my local Apple store expressed puzzlement at why it isn't certified since they know of many people who have upgraded to this combination. I've tested every function on the monitor with every function I know of on the computer and video card. They all work as designed. Perhaps Apple will eventually certify the combination but I assure you it works.

  • GeForce vs Radeon Benchmarks HL2

Is it true the Radeon 9600 Pro has higher frame rates then the FX5900 GeForce? In the Half Life 2 game coming out?
Wondering if any one has more info on this?

I don't know about HL2 specifics, but that aside: no, an ATI 9600pro is not nearly as powerful as an nvidia 5900xt. Right now, I wouldn't buy either, however, unless you plan to run last year's games (or future games but at very very low resolutions). If you can afford to spend a little extra, I recommend the ATI 9800pro. Or, if you can wait, AGP versions of ATI's X700 and nvidia's 6600GT promise to significantly elevate what you can achieve at the $200 price point. Problem is, first versions of both cards are pci-express only, not AGP. Pretty silly, considering most pci-express systems right now are high end ones.
Anyway, it sounds like you should hit http://www.tomshardware.com or http://www.anandtech.com and dig through their archives for graphics card performance comparison articles...

We need a little more info than that if you want anything remotely helpful from anyone here.
Take a look at some of the thread in here and notice the signature that most users have you can edit it in your profile information.
Then provide some info on what you did or the process in wich you installed the drivers and the utilities.
If you have a dual boot setup did you use the latest drivers for each OS?

  • Catalyst versus Radeon

ATI users, gamers, and 3D hobbyists, be all ears!
As you may have experienced, the official 'catalyst' driver has an unbelievable amount of bugs and poor Unix integration.
    * Poor Xorg support.
    * Poor use of Linux's DRI/DRM interfaces, no KMS.
    * Wine gaming is a real pain (poor performances, crashes, glitches).
In my opinion, Catalyst is really holding back graphics development (e.g. gaming) in the Unix world. But there may be light at the end of the tunnel.
You may have heard of it: the free 'radeon' driver did tremendous improvements recently, to such extent that high performance with 3D applications can be taken back into consideration. Every new update is a huge performance boost. Yes, we can actually play a lot of games with the free radeon driver now.
This driver is really a gift to Unix, since it means that 3D would finally be available unrestricted for free (speaking of the software). But if you want this to happen, we need to endorse the development, at least by using it and reporting bugs, if not contributing to the source code directly.
I think a benchmark page can help: by showing where radeon performs equally if not better, it would encourage users and especially newcomers to give it a try.
I've started a benchmarking reference on the following wiki page:
    https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Ta … sus_Radeon
We need more games and a wider range of hardware. Everyone is welcome to contribute!

AMD user here, because Ati is long dead.
Wine gaming is a pain compared to Nvidia, because Wine devs use the "special" Nvidia shaders, when the "normal" OpenGL shaders are failing or so. And because Nvidia don't see the bugs (because it is working for them), Nvidia gets this special treatment in Wine. And because this is going on for a while, the "normal" (Nvidia-)gamer will say, that AMD drivers suck. Well, they do, but in this scenario, not everything is wrong on AMDs side. I guess, this hurts open drivers as well, but because they are, performancewise, too weak, no one cares atm.
A, benchmarks. I'll contribute to it:
Unigine Valley Benchmark: Doesn't run with radeon driver.

  • 30 Inch Cinema Display and Radeon ATI 9650

I have a problem with the above combination of kit. I have the resolution set to its highest but but am still getting fuzzy text and also pixelly icons in the dock. When I look in the system profiler it says that I have a Radeon ATI 9600. Anyone got any ideas?

Just received new 30" ACD with Radeon ATI 9650, and having same problem (max resolution at 1280x800) like above...
Is that a maximum resolution I get? or did I do something wrong?
    Everything is huge and fuzzy...
    need help~~~
BTW, my system profiler says that I have a Radeon ATI 9650... no problem there.
...but nothing I can do in the 'system preperence' box...

In researching the purchase of my *(upcoming) new Mac Mini, I found these two articles on the GPU processors now used in the Mac Mini lineup 2011.
    Intel HD 3000
    http://www.notebookcheck.net/Intel-HD-Graphics-3000.37948.0.html

    http://www.notebookcheck.net/AMD-Radeon-HD-6630M.43963.0.html
    (general benchmarks averages: 12,511 points)
For gaming, they list many different 3D games' performances at various screen resolutions.
Overall, it appears the 6630M is nearly twice the performance of the Intel HD 3000.

  • Dual Cinema Displays - Worth it?

    Greetings to all!
I just wanted to ask about the general opinion of the Apple Cinema Displays versus some other various Widescreen LCD's out there at the moment.
I'd like to run a pair of 20 Inch units off a Quad G5, however, I'm looking at the specs for the Cinema Display, and they don't appear to be too impressive (14ms Response time?) for a $999 Monitor.
For reference, I'm also considering the Viewsonic VX2505WM and the Acer AL2016W.
I'm not sure what I'm missing- but specs wise, ether of these units appear to be better then the Cinema Display, for less-then-half of the price ($350/Unit, versus $999/Unit). Better Contrast Ratio, lower Response Times, higher brightness, etc.
Am I missing something (other then the Aluminum enclosure- and the fact that it's an Apple product), or are there truely better monitors out there then the Apple Cinema 20" unit?
    Thanks!
    SC

I needed more real estate for a project recently, so I pulled the 20" acd from each of my minis and combined them on a G5 instead of the 23" - wow can't believe I didn’t do this sooner- the display’s DPI has always been crisper to my eye on the 20's and together they make a great space for design and digital imaging. I was going to buy another 23" but given the dual 20" scratched that for a few bucks more I’ll get 2 20” acd’s. To those that use "cheaper" monitors you must not do any critical color work or use them in an environment without an apple display- I just sold my Dell 2405 24" because (in my subjective opinion) I couldn't stand looking at it anymore compared to the rest of my apple display based systems -and yes it was calibrated and used on the same dual 2.7 G5 configurations with the same getrag eye I use on the rest of my monitors. Dells and such are fine for basic computing, but cheap is cheap. If you buy anything except a high-end lacie eizo or sony don't run it next to an apple display, you’ll be disappointed and of course always have a 21” apple studio display crt to put them all to shame….

Honestly I wouldn't spend too much trying to upgrade your computer. It has an aging dual core Athlon processor, and only 2GB of RAM. Even with the highest top of the line card, with that CPU/RAM setup, your computer is probably going to struggle to run it.
Hate to be the bearer of bad news.
If you like my post, or solution to your issue/question, go ahead and click on the little star by my name and/or accept the post as the Solution. It makes me happy.
I'm NOT an employee of Best Buy, or Geek Squad, though I did work as an Agent for a year 5 years ago. None of my posts are to be taken as the official stance that Best Buy will take on your situation. My advice is just that, advice.
Unfortunately, that's the bad luck of any electronic, there's going to be bad Apples... wait that's a horrible pun.

  • HELP! - X3 Terran Conflict problems (I am using an I5 27")

I couldn't find a gaming section so here we go:
I have installed the game, it has detected the latest patches, but the performance is mystifyingly horrendous.
The game detect the graphics card etc and set to the recommended settings, resolution is as the best setting, graphics and shading is on high, AA and something else if mid.
I get game crashing, frame rate problems as so bad it's unplayable, juddering, freezing, screen tear. I reduce the setting right down on this resolution, the game crashes less but the rest is still poor.
I have also reduced the resolution and the setting down and it's still a bag of spanners.
    X3 Terran Conflict requires
    intel cpu 2.16 or higher ----------------------- I have the 2.8 I5
    1GB RAM ----------------------------------- I have 4GB RAM
geforce 8600, radeon x16000 or newer 256MB------- I have ATI Radeon HD 5750 VRAM (Total): 1024 MB
    Surely this should run great?
Has anyone else got this, game what are you running it on and how is it performing?

Installed 10.6.3 from retail disk to FW external HD. Migrated everything from 10.5.8 internal boot drive. 10.6.3 ran fine until I shut down overnight. Power up the following morning gave login screen, then blue screen. Rebooted to safe mode; is now running fine. Repaired permissions more than once. (Log shows exactly the same items found and "repaired.")
Would appreciate a systematic way to determine what's keeping the normal boot from completing.

  • No realtime playback during RAM preview

Ever since I upgraded to the newest MacPro, AE has been unable to play a RAM Preview in realtime. Even during the most simple of compesitions, RAM preview fluctuates between 20fps and 59.94fps and will never "lock in" to realtime. Resolution is set to full and zoom is set to 100%. We have compared all the settings to other, less powerful, machines in our studio and still cannot make it play realtime.
    Mac Pro 2 x 2.66 Ghz - 6 Core intel Zeon

    ATI Radeon HD 5870
    OSX 10.6.6
    Kona LHe 9.1
    AE 10.5.0.253

I'm guessing the problem is with your Kona card.  AJA has been having issues with CS5.5 and they just released updated drivers and have split the Adobe app plugins into their own installer now on the Windows side.
Unfortunately, you say you're already using the Kona 9.1 drivers so you're in the same boat as me with the poor playback in RAM previews.
Removing the Kona card instantly put my RAM previews back to normal, but it's not a proper solution.
Here are some tips I received from AJA support on this issue a few days ago:
OPTIMUM AE Settings for best performance:
Make sure the AJA video preview setting matches the sequence.
Use a RGBA video preview setting and not RGB 10-bit.
In AE preferences -> video preview set Output Quality to Faster.
Go to Project Settings -> set color settings -> depth and set to 8-bits per channel.
Make sure you are viewing at 100% during playback.
I just put the Kona 3G card in last week and CS5.5 instantly had playback issues in both AE and Premiere.  I got the 9.1 drivers AJA released this week and everything was fine after that! Halfway through a project yesterday, my RAM previews started lagging again. I'm working with AJA to resolve and if I get it figured out, I will post the solution here.

  • Should I get the 17 inch MacBook Pro, Dell Precision M6600, Lenovo Thinkpad W520, or the HP EliteBook 8760 W

I already own an old MacBook Pro running Core 2 Duo processor and have no problems with it. I was told by my friends not to go with the new Snow Leopard Operating system as they crash often and produce very slow performance. I am not sure if they will resolve all these issues in Lion. I do intensive work on Adobe and Autodesk products and I require an extremely fast processor, best display, and graphics card. If I choose MBP, I will take the anti-glare screen as I also do desktop publishing. I also don't understand why Apple doesn't ship their MacBook Pro's with Nvidia Quadro or ATI FireGL pro graphics cards. I was told that they are better cards for working with Pro apps. Are there any benefits of choosing Quadro or FireGL instead of GeForce or Radeon. I also saw the comments at Apple store and almost all have given the least possible rating to Quadro cards for Mac Pro. I don't wanna spend money unnecessarily if there will be problems with compatibility and I am also considering if I should switch to a PC as Snow Leopard is very slow. I also wonder how the gaming performance is in the Pro GPU's.

Your friends don't know what they're talking about.  SL is quite good...  far better than Leopard in my experience.  The issue is that many people have systems that get screwed up a little bit, and then they install some major update, and suddenly a slightly screwed up system becomes badly screwed up.  (Imagine building a second floor on a house with undiscovered structural defects.)  This is often unfairly blamed on system updates...  if you rely on word of mouth, every version of the Mac OS ever has been the worst ever.
Of course, I've got no experience with Autodesk.  Perhaps Autodesk has issues with SL, if your friends are all using it and having problems.  SL did change a lot under the hood, so older software may be incompatible with it.

Still the youtube and other vids are super chopy. Is this because of my video card? I have a ATI 128mb 16gb(i think is gb?) card that is orginal with computer. If so what type of vid card would I need to watch vids online? I would be greatful for any help. Thanks....

    Hello D_E,
Your Digital Audio is a generation or two old, and a little slow by nature. Having said that, it's a competent and capable Mac and would do with a little updating.
Max out the memory: it takes 1.5GHz RAM, or 2 more PC133 512MB non-ECC (non error checking) SDRAM sticks.
Your video card is ancient: try a GeForce 3, GeForce 4, Radeon 8500, Radeon 9800 Pro (flashed or otherwise), or a GeForce 6800 GT (listed in ascending order of desireability and price). Read japamac's posts for an excellent and more comprehensive treatment. Your video will now be much better, although it will be two generations behind. For truly excellent video, you need a new Intel Mac.
Swap your processor for a faster one: a DA 733MHz is a plug'n'play fit; a 933MHz CPU from a 2002 Quicksilver - complete with heatsink, fan, shroud, and jumper wire to the "fourth post" - is a fairly easy and very rewarding upgrade.
Hang on to your pocketbook. You will easily spend more than the DA is worth, and the video will never match a new machine. (I think I said that before.)
But you've got a great Mac! Enjoy!
    Jon
