24p Advanced- Highest Quality Output

Hi,
I shot DV footage with a DVX-100 using the 24p advanced mode. I was wondering how to extract the highest possible quality out of that footage for eventual HDcam uprez or even film output. I realize that all tape formats have some sort of compression, but on hard drives what is the best workflow to extract the highest possibly quality? Is it possible to do a hardware SDI uprez? Because I believe that SDI does not properly understand the flags for advanced pulldown removal which results in timecode ****. Only firewire can recognize those flags. Any info would be much appreciated!
Thanks,
Alexander

Rule: You cannot do better than capture it natively. Whatever format it is.
You'll want to remove that pulldown during capture if you are really printing it to film.
If you want to work in better than what you shot for graphics reasons etc... put it in a pro res sequence setting. you'll upconvert all to 4:2:2.
Capturing it as uncompressed, you could do that without much or any harm, however I won't look any better than what I've just suggested. You'll eventually have to render it all in the end. And a faster mac helps there.
Uncompressed files will be larger of course. Hardware conversion though may be best if you're really pernickity. However few if any will see much difference. Color correction is far more important.
I'd work in native DV until the end then copy/paste the clips into a pro res sequence once graphics and CC or Grading correction begins.

  • Dual Angles - How do I create highest quality output?

    Hey all,
         Football coach doing his best to use FCP to edit football videos for this season.  I've made some progress, currently I'm at a place where I've twisted things up a little bit and want to be able to get to the optimal output settings for my setup.  I have a MacBook teachers laptop, and 2 video cameras, a Sony HDR-CX110 and a Sanyo VPC-WH1 (with an Xacti card), which gives MPEG4 output.  I'm looking for optimal settings for the Sony camera, it was working well at first with Log and Transfer, but I've changed the settings more than once and can't remember what the best setting would be, I guess using the Easy Setup options?  The Sanyo I guess needs to be converted by MPEG Streamclip, using ProRes 422 setting, which I have some familiarity with since I use it for DVDs.  As we are in-season now, I don't have the time/energy to research all this stuff thoroughly enough, and the tech guy at school has been minimally helpful.  I'm not coming in totally blind, I have done research the last couple months, but I'm looking for someone to help me cut through the nonsense and get a routine I can get familiar with.  What I'm doing is taking video from each camera (2 different angles during the game) and intercutting the 2 angles.  What settings should I use to import this footage, and what do I need to be doing to produce output that plays well on Quicktime?  I've been able to get an intercut output through trial and error, but the output is sloppy, and this is making life miserable when I have 50 teenagers in a meeting room and I'm trying to rewind and fast forward plays quickly and sharply.
         Even though I'm sure I come across as not having more than a rudimentary understanding of FCP, I can assure you, I know less than you think.   I don't have a good understanding of output settings, EasySetup options, or input as far as what HDV is as opposed to Apple Intermediate Codec, etc.  I just know the steps I've been told to take, but I don't UNDERSTAND it.  I apologize for the rambling, I could use some help.  Thanks all for your time,

    Thanks Jim.  I checked out those tutorials, I'm still swimming a little bit though.  Does it make sense to go the multicam sequence route in my circumstances?  Right now, the typical work flow for a football game is for each camera operator to start and stop recording after each play to create individual files for each play.  For multicam it seems that it would need to have each camera running continuously instead?  Not sure battery life would enable that, but perhaps it would.  As these are 2 different brands of cameras, and they will be located 75 yards or so apart with different filmers, it's not realistic to have perfect sync.  I don't understand timecode that well, will the cameras be able to be synced within FCP if they are both running from start to finish without any pauses?  I.e. just find a sync point near the beginning and go from there?  We don't use audio for the shoots, does this make that more difficult/impossible?
         Separate question, can I still use log and transfer for the Sony cam, or do I need to do something differently (such as using MPeg streamclip instead of log and transfer?) in order to have both cameras imported using ProRes 422?  If I use MPeg Streamclip, I don't believe I have the ability to log clips in log and transfer or log and capture, do I have that right?  Thanks again for your time,

  • Highest Quality Output settings for creating a DCP

    I am editing something in Premiere and After Effects in CS4.  My footage is 720p and 23.976fps.  What are the optimal output and codec settings so that my movie can be turned into a DCP either by Open DCP or a Post House?  I found a tutorial about importing ProRes 422 codecs into Adobe CS6, but unfortunately it didn't work for CS4.  What is the best uncompressed codec setting for my project?  Thanks

  • HD output process for best / highest quality?

    We shot our film in DVCPRO HD 720p 24.
    We are done editing and ready to output to DVD for festival submission. What is the best way to output the film for the best / highest quality?
    Should we run this through compressor?
    Your help is greatly appreciated.
    Paul

    David, Do you need to adjust the compressor preset to maintain 24p thru dvd authoring (for better quality at lower bitrate - not to mention that full 24p experience on a properly configured dvd player and plasma screen)?
    I know that DVDSP does not register the m2v file as 24p (even though it is). I use bitvice to do my high quality compression so I'm not sure about compressor.

  • Highest Quality

    Hi guys,
    I have a Sony camera HDR-SR11 and I am shooting on 1920x1080i 60fps at 16Mbps (highest possible quality on that camera).
    How can I keep the highest quality through the whole process of importing/editing/re-compressing?
    I see my videos are already being imported at 1080p 30fps... Is this good? Can I import at 1080i 60fps? Is this better?
    To re-compress, should I use the iMovie hidef export or export via QT? Which one is better? Should choose 16Mbps when exporting? Any benefit going higher?
    Thanx

    Your camera shoots MPEG-4 AVC/H.264. Open up one of those files in QT and see what the frame rate says (command-i)
    iMovie will convert to what it wants/needs on import
    I would shoot video in every format you camera shoots export that footage how you think you are going to be using then, use the one you want that looks best to you. Depending on what you are outputting to as you final destination each type format has an advantages.
    Even though my camera will shoot 1080/60i, 1080/30p, 1080/24p, 720/60p, 720/30p, and 720/24p I shoot 720p30 because the files are smaller easier to work with, exports well to the web, and meets my needs. Also while you can certainly tell the difference between 1080 and 720 I had an old DV 480i camera that shot better footage than one of my cheap 720p cameras and certainly better than ANY 720p phone My point is size and rate is not everything. There are also people out there that will not shoot at ANY rate but 24. Why? Because they like that "film" look. Something iMovie now supports BTW.
    Not sure what you are talking about on "Final Compression" in iMovie you can share out; small medium, large, 720 or 1080 unless you run a custom export.

  • Exporting Final Cut timeline in highest quality Quicktime (self-contained)

    Hi, I am wondering if you can help me. I just finished editing a film in HDV, 24P in Final Cut Studio 2 and need to export it as a stand alone quicktime file to take it to the color correction people and then for downressing in order to write to DigiBeta tapes.
    My question is, do I simply export to Quicktime movie self-contained file using default (current) setting? I also see there are options such as Applre ProRes422 HQ, uncompressed 8bit and 10bit. From what I've heard uncompressed 8 and 10 bit and also apple ProRes422 are higher qualities? Am I wrong?
    But going to Uncompressed 8bit or even to Apple ProRes won't make a difference since I only have HDV quality and that's the highest quality I can get anyway?
    Please advise.
    Thank you

    Exporting a self contained QT Movie, and not recompressing will get you an HDV file that is full quality. But unless the facility you are going to has FCP on the machine they load this, they won't be able to see it. Same with ProRes...which would be the better choice for color correcting (10-bit, I-Frame format instead of GOP). ProRes and HDV (and DVCPRO HD) are codecs that only come with FCP, and any computer, even a mac, that doesn't have FCP installed cannot even view those file formats.

  • Burning the highest quality in idvd 9

    Hi,
    When burning a disk at the highest quality available in idvd 9, what is the final output resolution? I'd like to get as close to 1080i as possible (knowing that I cannot burn HD without a HD burner and equivalent software). I am curious as to what idvd does to your video and stills. I've been creating HD movies in FCE (1280x720) and using idvd to create slideshows and then burning the project to dvd for playback on my HDTV. My images are HD 1280x720 tifs which I have been importing into idvd for a slideshow. On the final output I notice the images look soft, so was wondering what quality idvd is capable of.

    As stated above already iDvd is limited to standard definition. There are no workarounds that I am aware of within iDvd itself. You'll have to think outside of this app if your intention is to go high def and blu-ray or even high def on a standard dvd-r. Forget about playing it back on most macs since apple doesn't currently support Blu-ray playback through its own dvd player app. Your hands are tied unless you choose a third party or an alternate dvd player application to open the file. For example, Roxio's Toast Video Player can do this.

    Hope this helps but if not just come on back.

  • How to scan highest quality .pdf's with Image Capture?

    Hi,
    I need to scan a pile of official documents and I'm trying to use Image Capture for that. How can I get the highest quality and the files at a reasonable size at the same time? It shouldn't be necessary to end up with 12 MB .pdf files to get a legible quality with some images and colors intact, should it?
    All suggestions are welcome!
    Many thanks in advance!

    As you prepare to print, once you show full detail in the print window, you should see something like this:
    That row under "Orientation" that currently says "Print Settings" may say something else like "Image Capture".  Change it to "Print Settings" as shown above.  Then adjust the "Print Quality" line below it to something like "Economy" or "Fast Economy".

  • Can Flex make a Design Tool with a quality output file?

    Hi there,
    I have a team of developers working on a web-based design tool for a large-format print shop. They built the prototype on a Flex platform and used ImageMagick to handle text and image effects.
    Unfortunately, ImageMagick cannot produce the quality of output file we need for our products (prints up to 3 ft by 6 ft / 1m x 2m). It rasterizes all of the design objects, including text and vector clipart.
    Is it possible for Flex to handle all of these elements (object rotation, scale changes, etc.) and output a final design to high quality PDF or AI files without ImageMagick?
    I'm just not sure if my developers are missing something or if they're just not communicating the technical challenges involved in creating such large, high quality output files for a custom, web-based application.
    Many thanks in advance for any insight!

    I'm still not sure I understand what you need.  Sounds like the image map is the same for all the pages, but the image itself is different, although the images are the same size on each page.  Is that it?
    In that case, you could do this in a number of ways, but the best might be -
    Make the page have a transparent PNG/GIF image the same size as the map that has the 5 mapped areas defined on it.  Make the container for that image have a CSS BACKGROUND image that is the actual map.  Specify this CSS background image's path in an embedded stylesheet in the editable region of the head of the page.
    With this as the template, all you need to do on each page is to respecify the background image - since the embedded stylesheet is in an editable region that's do-able.  In other words the TEMPLATE would be -
    <html>
    <head>
    <!-- TemplateBeginEditable name="head">
    <style type="text/css">
    #foo {
         background-image:url(path_to_map.jpg);
         background-repeat:no-repeat;
    </style>
    <!-- TemplateEndEditable -->
    </head>
    <body>
    <div id="foo">
         <img width="map_width" height="map_height" src="transparent.png" usemap="#foomap">
    <map name="foomap">
    </map>
    </body>
    </html>
    The map image can, itself, be in an uneditable region of the page....

  • Highest quality export

    whats the highest quality export for dvd. I have a client who wants to watch it on computer, tv and projection with best quality.
    Also, is a video_TS file better quality than a fcp quicktime mov file?

    To get the highest quality export for DVD, you will need to buy Compressor 4 and create your own preset -- you will need to calculate the max bps based on the amount of video and the size of the DVD (SL vs DL).
    Video_TS isn't a file, it is a folder and part of the structure of the DVD. DVDs use mpeg2, which is highly compressed and there will be a maximum level of quality you can get based on the length of the video.
    A quicktime mov file by itself can contain most any codec, and thus any level of quality. But generally speaking, it is meant for viewing on computers, unless you have a streaming solution with something to decode it for the TV.
    If your original source is HD, you could consider outputting to blu-ray.

  • Elements 9, DSLR H.264 - What codec is best to edit with & highest quality?

    Hello All,
    I have quite a bit of DSLR footage I recently shot using a Canon 5d.  I have Adobe Premiere Elements 9 and it really chokes down the system.  I have a PC with i7 and 8 gigs of RAM.
    What would be the best file format to convert the H.264 footage for editing while maintaining the highest quality possible.  The footage was shot at 24fps.  Please give a detailed description of how to convert it - there are a lot of adjustable settings in the advanced tab of the share section in PrE 9.
    Thanks in Advance,
    Brian

    Bill,
    Is probably right , as he is most times when he is drinking Aussie wine.
    I only have PE 4 and when you bring the H.264 mov in there you get a red line, you are better off rendering the working area as it will run smoother.
    Ps.  You should not be having problems with the audio, I have just finished editing 35 mins jazz from a live performance, if there is a red line from the h.264mov files as Bill said , you should render the lot. Changing the audio should be easy, but save as you go
    Ah, I do not know why there are two track of video in there, you should have one video+ 1 audio track together, unless you have added another video track ?
    Ps. If the playback stops and the music continues you have a problem, It has happened to me.You are running a 32 bit piece of software in a 64 bit operating system, it may help if you download  Running Windows XP Mode with Windows Virtual PC as I used to lose files and windows in PP and PE, but, other experts here will tell you it is not necessary, it is worth a try ?
    I would start a new project , Clean the Media Cache, bring the H.264mov clips in one by one and  have no gaps , do not disconnect the audio from the video.
    Good luck ( you could try Adobe Technical Service, if all else fails ) ?

  • Does exporting "current" provide highest quality/size jpegs?

    What are the default settings of the "current" option in exporting photos from iPhoto? Is it the same as choosing jpeg at highest possible quality, best resolution, etc.? I would like to export my photos in iPhoto to an external drive and would like to preserve the highest quality jpeg size/format as originally imported into iPhoto from my camera. I understand that exporting as "original" would do this. However, I have created duplicates of photos and cropped them, and would like to preserve the cropping upon export. Exporting these cropped photos as "original" removes the cropping. Does exporting as "current" export the fullest size and highest quality jpeg possible (for the smaller/cropped image)?
    Thanks for advance for any clarification on this.

    Export a JPEG and set the quality setting to the highest value

  • Highest quality slideshow saved to movie file is has terrible resolution in PE12, but PDFs look great. What's up?

    I've saved a PE12 slideshow as the highest quality available, but the resolution is low when viewing. When saved as a PDF the resolution is outstanding. Does anyone know how I can get better resolution from the movie file?

    How are you creating the video file? PSE itself can only record in the horrid outdated VCD format. Output your slideshow to a WMV file and then use PRE, if you have that, or whatever burning software you have to finalize the video.

  • Export in the highest quality

    I have made a very complex presentation in Keynote with all kinds of shadows, exact positionings of images, backgrounds, reflections etc. I have noticed that if I export from within Keynote to Powerpoint in order to share this presentation it looks like crap. Images fall off, shadows dissapear etc.
    In order to share this presentation in the highest quality I would like to do this in Pdf format and then create a fullscreen version in Acrobat pro. Any other suggestions when the highest quality of the slides are indispensable? I would like to give the viewer the same booth like experience as Keynote at the best quality.
    Thanks

    Fernando-
    I'm currently, desperately trying to get my polished Keynote presentation exported as a QuickTime movie, and although the process completes and is successful the sound on the first 2 slides of my slideshow will not play in QuickTime. As a test I moved the first 2 slides to the back and sure enough, the same problem still exists (meaning it wasn't just the audio in those first 2 slides).
    Any ideas?
    Thanks in advance,
    Rich
