27" 2010 iMac - loss of sound in youtube after Lion 10.7.1 upgrade

Hello
This is very weird but when I go to youtube with Safari under Lion I will sometimes (not always) have no sound when the videos play.
Some are perfect but some are silent.
I am a Mac newbie and don't know how to proceed.
Could it be Flash related?
Any help will be appreciated.
TIA
Mark

Can anyone help??

No sound in garageband after Lion install, can anybody help please?

12 hours ago my midi played through Garageband with no problems. Today it does not play. The Garageband window shows that the keys are being played.
In the moments following I turned on iTunes and all was fine so I burned a disc in my usual factory installed burner, late 2008 iMac, and the message was "no disc burner found". I turned iTunes on and off and same message. Ran Disc Utility and no flags. I am using the Disc Utility that is on my desktop. Is there a hidden Lion disc utility? Nothing worked unless there is a hidden function.
I was able to burn using Toast. This would indicate that the problems is with iTunes 10, OS 10.7.1

  • Help! 2010 imac 27" - Display doesn't work after long sleep

I just recently started having this problem. I've had this iMac since 2010 with zero issues, but it seems like ever since I downloaded Yosemite, the screen won't work after the computer has been sleeping for a while. I have to hold the power button and do a hard restart to get it to work again. If the computer has only been sleeping for a while, it wakes just fine. It's only after it's been sleeping all night and I go to use it agsin. I've checked power connections and all is good. Any ideas??

    Hi Punisher8522,
Welcome to the Support Communities!  The resource below offers some troubleshooting steps to try when your computer won't wake from sleep.
OS X: When your Mac doesn't sleep or wake - Apple Support
    http://support.apple.com/en-us/TS5357
Your computer cannot wake from sleep
Make sure your computer isn't powered off by pressing the power key for one second.
If you're using an external display, make sure your display is not powered off or unplugged.
If you are using a Mac desktop:
Make sure the AC power cord is connected securely to the computer and outlet.
Make sure the AC power outlet it is connected to is working properly.
If your computer is plugged into a power strip, make sure the power strip is not turned off. Check to make sure other items connected to the power strip are receiving power.
Your computer is slow to wake from sleep
If you see a progress bar when you wake your computer from sleep, this is normal. The computer is waking from safe sleep.
    OS X Recovery and sleep
The system software your computer uses when started from OS X Recovery allows display sleep. Your computer does not go to sleep on idle while started from Recovery unless you are using a Mac notebook that is not connected to AC power.
    Additional troubleshooting
If the steps above do not resolve your sleep-related issue, try these additional recommendations.
    Reset SMC
The System Management Controller (SMC) is involved in managing power on your computer. Reset the SMC on your Mac if you are having difficulty sleeping or waking your computer.
    Reset NVRAM/PRAM
Nonvolatile RAM (NVRAM)/Parameter RAM (PRAM) stores some power-related settings.Try resetting NVRAM/PRAM if you are having difficulty sleeping or waking your computer.
    Test with external devices disconnected
Some external devices can prevent your computer from sleeping. Try disconnecting items other than your Apple keyboard or mouse from the built-in USB, Thunderbolt and Firewire ports on your Mac. If this resolves the issue, try reconnecting your external devices one at a time until you find the device preventing sleep or wake. Check the documentation that came with the device, or contact the device manufacturer for more information.
    Try Safe Mode
Check to see if the issue still occurs when the computer is started in Safe Mode. If this resolves the issue, it could be related to a third party software item such as:
    a login item
    a startup item
    a third party kernel extension
    Try another user account
Try creating another user account, or log in as guest. See if your computer sleeps and wakes properly from the additional user account. If it does, your issue may be related to one of the following:
    a login item
an app open in the original user account
You can disable login items from the Accounts pane of System Preferences. Try opening only one app at a time in the original user account to determine which app is preventing sleep. If you isolate the issue to a particular app or login item, check its documentation, or contact the developer of that software for more information.

  • No sound on Youtube after 2.1

Problem resolved spontaneously when I went to an Apple store.

  • Loss of sound iPad 2 after IOS7

I've had enough of seeing "reset your iPad" as the answer to this issue. I have spent hours on the phone with Apple support and have been through every form of backup and restore known to mankind. Fact is, I have an otherwise fully functional iPad 2 that went dumb after IOS7. The volume slider doesn't even show in Control Center. I have been told by Apple support that it looks like a software issue, if only because if I go to Settings and slide my volume control, it gives me perfectly good sample sounds.
FIX THIS APPLE or at least acknowledge it's an issue that's going to be fixed. I can wait, but you have taken my sound away with IOS7 and you need to give it back. No sound anywhere. No it's not the mute/screen lock setting, no, it's not my hardware, because it makes sample sounds. THIS IS AN ISSUE.

I've had enough of seeing "reset your iPad" as the answer to this issue
Which resets have you tried that didn't work?

  • MacBook Pro 13" Audio Output sound quality terrible after Lion upgrade

    Hi guys,
I have recently upgraded my 2011 MBP 13 to Lion, and ever since have had terrible audio out sound quality, i.e. it is 'grainy' and full of feedback - very unpleasant to listen to.
Is anyone else in the same boat and does anyone have the solution to my problem?
    Thanks,
    Sam

Sorry for the late reply, yes mine does does recover but I still think it is the same issue with different levels of severity.  This is a guess but possibly my higher spec Retina MacBook Pro can work its way through the issue where your 13" MBP can't or can't in a reasonable amount of time.
I have also thought that it is related to window server and was wondering if someone else would bring it up as semi-confirmation since 2 people would have to came to the same conclusion, yes I am weird you don't have to tell me.  I am thinking it is possibly related to the lower priority for background apps; it gets caught thinking every window is in the background, chokes, and does not know what to do which is why the cursor will still move since it never gets "backgrounded".  As for the caps lock, it is pretty much hardware based which is why we can have a virtual machine not read the caps lock on someimes if it is turned on when the VM is started.
I wish Apple would have more testers so things like this would not slip through.  I see more complaints like this when there are external displays on MacBooks than single display iMacs/Minis.  Something that may not be tested enough since it requires more specific circumstances.
Sorry, I don't know how to restart window server without the terminal.  I would have loved to test the theory since that would answer the question of what is at fault quickly.

  • IMac 8,1 won't boot after Lion Install.

    Hey guys,
I have an iMac8,1 with a 2.4GHz Intel Core 2 Duo that I just installed Lion on.
It previously had Leopard on it, but after shutting it down to boot from the USB stick that I had made on my MacBook, I pressed alt to show the device selection menu. There were no options except EFI boot with an orange drive, which I took for the Lion stick that I had made. Installing Lion went without a hitch. I formatted the drive that Leopard was on and did a clean install. After it was finished, I set up Lion and set up a Boot Camp partition so that I could install Windows 7 side by side with it. I booted into the device selection menu (holding down alt/option while booting) and it showed me a completely blank screen. No Macintosh HD, no EFI boot, no Windows DVD, nothing.
I put the flash drive back into the machine, and kept restarting it and seeing the same result, until all of a sudden it decided to finally start, and I saw the Apple logo. After a while, though, it became apparent that it was not booting into OS X Lion on the hard drive, but rather the Lion Install.
I have no idea what to do with this machine. It was running extremely slowly before I started trying to fix it, and it didn't make sense to me that a machine with fairly capable specs (I have the same processor and 2GB of RAM on my MacBook and it runs great) would run so catastrophically slowly.
Also, I'm now in Disk Utility running from the Lion USB and it a) sees both partitions and mounts them fine, b) says that "The volume "Macintosh HD" appears to be OK", after Repair Disk c) is unable to fix or verify disk permissions.
I'm at a loss as to what to do. Can anyone help?

If you have backups of all OS X and WIndows data on the internal drive, I suggest you partition it with the default options (GUID partition table, one data partition) while booted from the USB device. Install OS X and test. If you can boot in that configuration, restore your OS X data and then run Boot Camp Assistant, if you wish.
If the above procedure is unsuccessful, the machine has a hardware fault.

  • Macbook Pro mid 2010 hard drive beep, click, freeze BACK after Lion?

I have a mid-2010 Macbook Pro and I had the same problem that was described here:
    https://discussions.apple.com/message/9817201?messageID=9817201#9817201
    https://discussions.apple.com/message/15055210#15055210
Like many others, mine stopped beeping after the Software Update released by Apple when they admitted there was a problem.  However, since I've upgraded to Lion, the hard drive is back to its old ways of beeping, clicking, and freezing.  Anyone else having this problem again?  Anyone else think this is an odd coincidence?  I called support and, after going through the usual troubleshooting, they escalated to a supervisor who wanted me to go through the same troubleshooting only to tell me that I should take it into an Apple Store where they'll likely send it in for testing.  I haven't done it yet because it's rather inconvenient to have to jump through the same hoops and be without my computer again when the problem seems fairly obvious based on my history with this machine.  I'm actually hoping it's hardware failure at this point so I don't have to wait for them to acknowledge another problem.

    Hi Luke,
The click/beep was happening more and more and was starting to drive me nuts.
I contacted Apple/Seagate but neither were helpful at all.
I went to my local Apple representative but they said they would need to hold on to my laptop for 1-2weeks while they checked out the issue and then replaced the HDD and the same model, this was something I couldn't do as I need my laptop for work everyday.
Apple's online support (+ call) just told me to bring it into my local Apple representative so that went nowhere.
In the end I shelled out my own money to fix Seagate/Apples problem and bought a Seagate Momentus XT 500GB drive which I have had no issue with since I got it, about 6 months.
It also speeds up my Mac with the inbuilt SSD cache. I recommend it.

I also just saw that Seagate now offer a 750GB model.
FYI, I had this click/beep issue in Snow Leopard too.
For anyone doing a google, here is the exact HDD I have now which works well:

  • Brand new iMac 27 2011 won't boot after Lion upgrade

Got a brand new iMac 27 2011 yesterday and did an update to 10.6.8 first before installing OSX Lion over it...
After restarting it just shows then the "prohibitive icon" on screen and shuts down after few seconds...
It won't even boot from an USB stick with the OSX Lion image on it...
Recovery partition works but can't do a reinstall from there....
So going back to 10.6.8 now...

Just so you know I purchased brand new imac in July and did the same upgrade as you. I just installed Lion but did not have any issues. Only one concern overall though, it slowed down my new imac a bit. Not sure if there are settings or not but Leopard was faster than this. AppStore, iTunes are eating lot of memory and CPU util goes up.

  • Windows 7 blue screen on Mid 2010 iMac running 10.8

I had previously had the 64 bit version of Windows 7 Home Premium running on my mid 2010 iMac running 10.7. However, after upgrading to 10.8, my Windows installation would blue screen after booting. I suspect this was due to upgrading to 10.8 as I didn't make any changes to my Windows install because I only use it for gaming.
I've since removed the Windows partition, and tried a clean install via the Boot Camp Assistant. Windows installs just fine and boots cleanly. However, after installing the Apple Boot Camp drivers (freshly downloaded during the Boot Camp Assistant process), Windows blue screens upon booting. I can repair the Windows install using the built in process, but any attempt to install Apple's drivers results in blue screening. I've tried a clean Windows install and redownloading Apple's drivers several times with no luck.
Does anyone else have any suggestions on how to resolve this problem? Thank you for your help!

I do see this. And I suspect Windows updates. Not Apple (though I would be the first to suspect those too).
iMac graphic drivers for Windows seem touchy and common. The April Windows monthly patch updates hit a few iMac users.
One person found that if they only did updates in smaller steps and not all at once they were fine.
Tuesday this week was another Patch Tuesday.
Games, heat, disk blocks, even RAM errors - one person recently we went round and round... bad blocks not heat, new disk drive and they were 100% stable and rock solid but was hard to rule out. Windows though is easier to test RAM and sectors. And Lion was not even aware or sensitive to those bad sectors and read errors OR RAM errors that Memtest clearly showed (run in OS X).
One person had upgraded RAM, low and behold the new DIMMs were just not fully pushed in and seated and making good contacts.
Try to rule out hardware. Maybe you stumbled on bad block being used now. Run chkdsk if nothing else.
And when updating or preparing to, run Registry cleaner in CCleaner first, Go To %TEMP% and remove everything there. Make a system backup image to another disk drive (NTFS) or with WinClone 3 (HFS, $20) or CampTune ($20).
Or it could just be uninstall one driver at a time, start with GPU, look at what was last installed. Windows drivers are not desireable for GPU. Get the one from AMD or Nvidia instead.

  • 2010 IMAC how to test RAM

I want to install some new RAM in my 2010 imac, and test it. On Mountion Lion, the hardware test does not run when pressing ctrl+d or holding down the d key. Also, booting memtest from dvd does not work, it is simply ignored? Is there a way of testing RAM?

See http://https://discussions.apple.com/message/20014699#20014699 for starters. As for memtest, use Rember.

  • Loss of sound on imac

I have a sudden loss of sound coming from my external speakers. I can only get it back if I re boot. This usually happens every day with no rhyme or reason.
The internal speakers are ok. I use the Bose companion 5 series speakers. It cannot be the Bose because if I re boot everything is ok for a while. any Ideas?

I have been there and done that.....makes no difference. Why do you think that the all of a sudden it would change the output in the first place? Things don't change by themselves for no apparent reason. It was still on the bose speakers when I went into sys pref. Amazing that you think that it would change itself everyday....did you really read my post or were you distracted?

  • Loss of sound in all browsers showing youtube Videos?

I don't really know where to start wit this one,
I use both Firefox and Safari (& Camino sometimes) but for some reason none of them play sound for youtube videos. Obviously it isnt the speakers because they work fine with everything else-
    Any Ideas?? Thanx

Some apps change the default sound prefs of OS X which seems to mute the sound in some apps, but not all.
If that is the case, the fix is simple - open Garage Band and play a sample loop. This will reset the sound to the defaults and your sound should return.

  • Mid 2010 iMac Problems

    I have a 21.5" Mid 2010 iMac with 16 GB RAM, running 10.8.5.
    Problem #1
It's recently started doing some odd behavior when waking up from sleep. I have the screen saver set to come on after 5 minutes of inactivity and then the display and computer both sleep at 15 minutes.
When I try to wake the computer up by moving the mouse, it takes anywhere between 5-10 seconds for the password prompt to pop up and then it's another 2-5 seconds before it will let me type in the box. It also seems that when the computer sleeps, the wifi is disconnecting, because the computer won't have received any new email and all my mailboxes have the little exclamation symbol next to them.
After about 5 seconds or so once the computer fully wakes up, it reconnects and pulls all my new mail.
    Problem #2
This usually happens when I just browsing facebook or youtube or something like that, but when I switch over to another application and come back to Safari, I will get the beach ball for a few seconds and then the computer will freeze.  The mouse cursor turns into the little "I" symbol like when you go to type or highlight text.  The only thing I can do at this point is a restart.
    Problem #3
I have spaces set up with Safari, Mail, iCal, and iTunes in spaces 1, 2, 3, and 4.  Most of the time I'm in Safari, but if I move to another space either with the mouse or the keyboard shortcut, to check for new mail, for instance, and go immediately back to Safari, it will on it's own jump back to the space I just left.  It happens with any space no matter what.  I use the option + arrow keys to go between spaces a lot.
Does anyone have any idea why this happens?   Thanks for your help.

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a test, not a solution. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
    Step 1
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is localized to your user account.
Enable guest logins* and log in as Guest. Don't use the Safari-only “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac.”
While logged in as Guest, you won’t have access to any of your personal files or settings. Applications will behave as if you were running them for the first time. Don’t be alarmed by this; it’s normal. If you need any passwords or other personal data in order to complete the test, memorize, print, or write them down before you begin.
Test while logged in as Guest. Same problem?
After testing, log out of the guest account and, in your own account, disable it if you wish. Any files you created in the guest account will be deleted automatically when you log out of it.
*Note: If you’ve activated “Find My Mac” or FileVault, then you can’t enable the Guest account. The “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac” is not the same. Create a new account in which to test, and delete it, including its home folder, after testing.
    Step 2
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party system modifications that load automatically at startup or login, by a peripheral device, or by corruption of certain system caches.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards. Boot in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. Note: If FileVault is enabled on some models, or if a firmware password is set, or if the boot volume is a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and Wi-Fi on certain iMacs.  The next normal boot may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem?
After testing, reboot as usual (i.e., not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of steps 1 and 2.
