3 hubs & 4 engineers in 5 weeks and hours on the p...

I've been using computers since the VIC-20 and the internet for about 15 years. I have been building PCs and repairing hardware & software issues since Win95. I think I have a fairly good grasp on computing & internet problems, though it's by no means extensive and I know when I'm moving into a grey area!
My mother has been a BT home broadband user for a couple of years now, with the curvey black, non-phone type of router. Until about 5 weeks ago she had no problems even though she lives on the 'limit' regarding distance from her exchange (o2 wouldn't connect her because of this, but BT did).
The computer connects to the hub via the Cat5 cable supplied with the router.
I live 70 miles away and can only visit on weekends but about 3 weeks ago I popped in to see if I could diagnose the problem of broadband dropping where the router's 'b' light flashes yellow and won't stay blue long enough to get the home page up.
With the computer off, the router's broadband status is OK - 'b' lit up in blue.
When the computer gets into Windows the 'b' light starts flashing orange and the broadband connection is lost.
A check on the computer's network socket shows solid LED for connection and flashing LED for communication.
Connection status shows that the router has assigned a proper internal IP (192.x.x.x as opposed to 169.x.x.x) and Windows considers the connection good.
Pull out the network cable and the router gets broadand back... reconnecting the cable results in broadband dropping again.
Wireless connections do not cause issue and the broadband only drops when the computer is connected through a cable.
I phoned the Indian crib-sheet readers and spent half an hour explaining my findings and only got passed up a level after I complained bitterly that to ask me to check wireless internet connectivity was pointless at a time when the broadband light showed no connection!
The 'manager', as he announced himself, didn't have much of a clue but eventually agreed that if the previous 3 engineers had established there werre no faults at the exchange, on the house wiring or the telephone line, then the fact that the router is happy to give the computer an IP but cannot maintain broadband connection, the issue must lie with the router.
Since my mother's original contract period had expired, she eventually agreed to sign up again to receive a free hub, which arrived two days later and exhibited exactly the same problems.
Earlier this week, a 4th engineer came out, installed new in-home phone cabling & more new filters, plugged in the new type3 hub that didn't work at all, and announced that the problem was with the computer's network socket. She phoned me and I spoke to the guy, expressing doubt that this was the case since it was getting an IP, but I agreed that this weekend I would fit another 10/100 internal network card and take a wireless dongle just to get it up again.
I could easily fit a wireless dongle or card but they are occasionally prone to driver issues (especially of the Windows Update kind) so would prefer not to, in order to save my petrol bills and sanity.
This evening, mum phoned again, to report the latest...
The engineer that originally came out (the very first time) appeared today (after some more hassling from mum!), checked the all-new wiring and - wonder of wonders - brought in his own laptop.
Imagine his surprise when he connected wirelessly but then the router dropped broadband almost as soon as the network cable was used!
He phoned some BT broadband/networking bigwigs somewhere in Wales and no-one has any idea what's going on.
So there we have it; unless mum is the unluckiest person on BT's books and has had two faulty replacement routers, there's a problem at the exchange that doesn't like her computer... I'm left wondering if there's some sort of account block on her PC!
Has anyone here heard of something similar? Any suggestions to try? Any help would be greatly appreciated - mum's Farmville won't harvest itself, you know!

Could it be that you are on the very limit of having a decent copper connection to the exchange? As soon as you start sending packets, the errors are so great that one end or the other terminates the connection(?).
If possible, it would be good to see the ADSL statistics from the router:
http://192.168.1.254, click on A-Z in the top right, then ADSL settings, enter password.

    I currently am using Entourage version 12.1.5. In the last month anytime I receive a meeting invitation and accept it in Entourage, it shows up an hour later on my iPhone calender. This also occurs when I create a meeting in Entourage it also shows up an hour later.
    If I accept the meeting on my iPhone, it does not sync with my Entourage calender.
    In Entourage preferences under sync services I do not have Calenders or Address book checked since this caused multiple entries of contacts or events.
    Anyone have this issue or know how to correct it? Thanks.

    From my own experience I can say that your final question can be answered with "Yes"!
    I have never known a compnay so bad at dealing with queries, issues, demonstrable faults etc. BT are useless as far as customer service is concerned.
    My experience includes nealrly a year of them denying problems with my phone and broadband including, therefore, a charged visit that found nothing (after the most cursory check. A year later with no improvement the second engineer finally arrived after two no shows when i had taken leave to cover them - and no call of course, apparantly "The exchange cancelled the call as there is no fault" and found the wires on the telegraph pole feeding the lines to several houses had been trapped when a previous engineer had accessed it and was frayed making for an on-off signal.
    This on top of hours and hours on the phone with this and with the mistimed/misquoted Infinity install and then isues with the speed and connection quality. Took weeks to sort and needed the speed to be throttled in order to give a more secure connection.
    In all I estimate I have wasted perhaps 20 hours on phone calls, two days wasted leave, an unnecessary £100 ish call out fee etc. etc.
    Did I mention that BT are useless? I'm off to Sky...

  • Default selection on current month, week and date

    We are on Dashboard 4.1 sp3 the same version as BI.
    The dashboard report is using LiveOffice connection. We are now facing an issue with default selection on current month, week and date.
    The dashboard report drilled down from month, to week, then to date. The dashboard feed -live office report is on month/week/date ascending order - becuase we have running average calcualtion on LO report, it seems have to be in ascending order to get the correnct runnning average.
    I tried to on Insertion to change default seletion, it works on month, but it doesnt working on week and daily.
    but when LO report is on ascending order, on dashboard column chart the default selection is not on the current month, week and date.
    Is there a way to solve the issue. Could anyone please help.

  • Forecast weekly and daily data using BPS

    Hi, we forecast cash on a weekly basis for 16 weeks and also do the current month daily forecast (daily forecast data gets rolled up to the current month weekly forecast numbers, so technically we do 12-13 weeks forecast on a weekly basis)...How can I set up such a scenario where both daily and monthly forecasting can be done...
    Also, I have only one characteristic(line of business) other than time characteristics (Day, week, month, year).

    Hi Srinath, users can enter both Daily and Weekly forecasting. They do daily forecast for current month and also do 16 week forecast (which includes the current month). How can I integrate the current month daily with Weekly forecast. Any time they change the daily forecast, they want the weekly forecast for the current month to get updated based on the new data. I created a layout for daily with week as a selection variable. that way when they enter daily data, week infoObject info gets loaded. But how can I update the daily infoobject when they enter the weekly data.
    I created two levels for Daily and Weekly before but it creates duplicates for weekly data...

    Hi RB,
       As you may be aware Billing plan can be either periodic or milestone billing. Billing plan is a schedule of individual billing dates for a single line item in an order. This is used mostly in Service , Maintenance or projects.
    If you want to bill a customer on a certain date for the specified quantities, I suppose you should use Scheduling Agreements to fulfill your requirement.

    If you want to get the time along with the creation date then use the tables CDHDR and CDPOS, but be careful while passing the data need to pass the entire primary fields data else it will fail in the performance test.

    Step 1
    Quit Calendar. Triple-click the line below to select it:
    ~/Library/Calendars/Calendar Cache
    Right-click or control-click the highlighted line and select
    Services ▹ Reveal
    from the contextual menu. A Finder window should open with a file named "Calendar Cache" selected.
    Move the selected file to the Trash. There may be one or two other files in the same folder with names that begin in "Calendar Cache". If so, delete those files too.
    Step 2
    Empty the Trash if you haven't already done so. If you use iPhoto, empty its internal Trash as well:
    iPhoto ▹ Empty Trash
    Then reboot. That will temporarily free up some space.
    According to Apple documentation, you need at least 9 GB of available space on the startup volume (as shown in the Finder Info window) for normal operation. You also need enough space left over to allow for growth of your data. There is little or no performance advantage to having more available space than the minimum Apple recommends. Available storage space that you'll never use is wasted space.
    To locate large files, you can use Spotlight. That method may not find large folders that contain a lot of small files.
    You can more effectively use a tool such as OmniDiskSweeper (ODS) to explore your volume and find out what's taking up the space. You can also delete files with it, but don't do that unless you're sure that you know what you're deleting and that all data is safely backed up. That means you have multiple backups, not just one.
    Deleting files inside an iPhoto or Aperture library will corrupt the library. Any changes to a photo library must be made from within the application that created it. The same goes for Mail files.
    Proceed further only if the problem isn't solved by the above steps.
    ODS can't see the whole filesystem when you run it just by double-clicking; it only sees files that you have permission to read. To see everything, you have to run it as root.
    Back up all data now.
    Install ODS in the Applications folder as usual. Quit it if it's running.
    Triple-click the line of text below to select it, then copy the selected text to the Clipboard (command-C):
    sudo /Applications/OmniDiskSweeper.app/Contents/MacOS/OmniDiskSweeper
    Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways:
    ☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
    ☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
    ☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
    Paste into the Terminal window (command-V). You'll be prompted for your login password, which won't be displayed when you type it. You may get a one-time warning not to screw up. If you see a message that your username "is not in the sudoers file," then you're not logged in as an administrator.
    The application window will open, eventually showing all files in all folders. It may take some minutes for ODS to list all the files.
    I don't recommend that you make a habit of doing this. Don't delete anything while running ODS as root. If something needs to be deleted, make sure you know what it is and how it got there, and then delete it by other, safer, means. When in doubt, leave it alone or ask for guidance.
    When you're done with ODS, quit it and also quit Terminal.

  • Have been using iPhoto for weeks and had it open just an hour ago and when I tried to open again I got a message that I had to upgrade in or to see my library??? after trying to upgrade still getting message. What the heck is going on

    Cannot open iphoto library, getting a message staing I have to upgrade to see my library which I have done four times with no results.  I just had iphoto opened an hour before without a problem and have been using it for weeks before today.  Any ideas as to what is going on?

    Apply the two fixes below in order as needed:
    Fix #1
    1 - launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys held down and rebuild the library.
    iPhoto 8 (09) and earlier- run the options indicated
    iPhoto 9 (11) and later- run  Option #4 to rebuild the database
    Fix #2
    Using iPhoto Library Manager  to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library
    1 - download iPhoto Library Manager (iPhoto 8 or earlier or IPhoto 11 and later) and launch.
    2 - click on the Add Library button and select the library you want to add in the selection window..
    3 - Now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the
    File ➙ Rebuild Library (iPhoto 8 or earlier)
    or
    Library ➙ Rebuild Library (iPhoto 9 or later)
    menu option to rebuild the library.
    4 - In the next  window name the new library and select the location you want it to be placed.
    5 - Click on the Create button.
    Note: This creates a new library based on the LIbraryData.xml file in the library and will recover Events, Albums, keywords, titles and comments.  However, books, calendars, cards and slideshows will be lost. The original library will be left untouched for further attempts at fixing the problem or in case the rebuilt library is not satisfactory.

    You should have turned your MBP off!  Keeping it on sleep w/o use for 3 weeks makes no sense.  As others have already stated, you will need to take your comp to a repair shop.  More than likely you need a new battery.

    As I understands it - This has nothing to do with Your iMac - Any Mac would take the same time.
    May be OS and support on the Window-PC platform handles this better.
    • .avi - is no specific codec (file format) but a container and the codec in this might not be one that iDVD can directly use (encode to .mpeg2 as on DVD disks)
    So either it just can't do it - or -
    iDVD has to back-encode to an usably codec - THIS IS WHAT I THINK HAS HAPPENED
    This back-encoding can take serious time - AND the final result usually is far from Good.

    • find out in what codec the .avi file is (I use QuickTime and in this inspector to read what codec .avi contains) (.mov is also a container)
    • import it into a program that can transcode to a better codec for iDVD - streamingDV or AIC (I GUESS)
    • then use this in iDVD

    Sounds like all the settings that you may have adjusted to save power (screen brightness etc etc) have been defaulted back to factory.
    If you jump into all the settings and turn off what you dont need and turn down what you do need it will be the same as before.

    Hi All, Here is my problem any suggestions or help would be greatly appreciated.... I have Home hub 2 connected to a master socket with built in filter. My Home hub is reporting the following....
    And i have been trying to use the BT speedchecker but it always fails....like this
    So i have been using thinkbroadband check and getting this......
    I have had a total of three (3) BT engineers out to my property to date, one(1) landline and two (2) openreach engineers. All say things are now ok and they will reset the line and wait 24hrs.........i have done this and still have very sow connections.
    I have plugged in direct to the router (home hub) 3 different laptop from a win7, osx and linux all the same result, very slow speed.
    I have changed the home hub for another and also connected a belkin router same results.
    I have called BT again today and they now say again there is a fault on the line and are handing over to BT network engineers to work with the exchange. It seems im going in loops with BT faults, open reach and BT engineers!
    Anyone else had similar problems know what to do next?
    My usual speed is between 2.2 -2.5Mbps download with 488Kbps upload as im not close to the exchange.
    here is the latest hub results and speed test, the hub now states a good download speed but in reality its only .2Kbps (false reading)...

    the first set of hub stats looks like you were stuck in a banded profile (288 and noise margin 26.5) probably due to all the resets as you were trying various things to fix your connection.
    It now seem to have let yout the banding and you have a reasonable speed for your attenuation but it probably that your profile is still low after the banding problem. However without the btspeedtester results you cannot tell what your profile and throughput are.
    your curent stats are ok but your noise margin is still a bit high at 10.9 as normal about 6.  staying connected with no resets your noise margin should come down with a possible small increase in your connection speed.
