4:2:2 and image sequence resolution question.

As I understand it, 4:2:2 is the best res to work with when compositing. If I pull a image sequence say from something other than 4:2:2, say DV, does the image sequence still maintain the res? Or since I am dealing with an image, .tiff, the res does not make a difference as long as the image is not compressed. Any insight would be helpful.
Thanks,
Ed

Wolf359,
"4:2:2" denotes the luma/chroma channel compression.
Compression (image sampling quality) is independent of resolution (picture size). Those two variables together determine file size.

  • Time-lapse and Image Sequence issue (Possibly also Frame-Rate)

So I'm in the process of making a time-lapse, and have batch edited and exported (in jpeg) 627 images.  My sequence settings are 23.976fps 1920x1080 (1080p).  Doing some quick math, 627 images at 24 frames a second should give me a little over 26 seconds.  However, I'm only getting a 20 second clip.  The settings on the clip are 29.97fps and 5184x3456 (I scale it down and use some keyframes to add some motion.)  So my question is is there a way to import an image sequence as 24 fps, rather than the default 30 that the clip is imported in?  Even when I put it the clip on the timeline and click "Keep sequence settings" it cuts it down to 501 frames, and I still only get 20 seconds worth of clip.   Thank you for your answers!

I am in PAL land so I not that familiar with ntsc but I think the difference has to do with the 23.97.
If you make a custom sequence you can set that to 24 fps exact.
Import the jpegs as an image sequence. this means select the first image, check image sequence at the bottom of the window and hit OK.
Also in the preferences under Media set the Indeterminate Media Timebase to 24.

  • Support for RAW Video and Image Sequences

Being a stills photographer who moved into video some years back, I'm very interested in the direction Lightroom is going with regards to video support. I haven't tried it yet but I wondered if LR4 supports Red R3D files? And would it perhaps support other future RAW video formats from the likes of Canon and Sony? It would seem like the perfect application, perhaps intergrating with Premiere in a similar way to RedCine with FCP. Be great to be able to log footage, orginize it into bins and do basic colour correction in LR, edit the project in Premiere and re-touch in After Effects.
Another task LR would seem ideally suited to is combining image sequences into timelapse video. Shooting timelapse as an image sequence on a DSLR is pretty much standard practice these days; and I've used LR to colour correct, crop and scale my sequences (before fitting them together in Quicktime) for years now. It would be fantastic to be able to preview the clip and export the video (as DPX, ProRes or DNxHD) from within Lightroom.
These are obviously fairly long term wishes. In the short term though, the video features are pretty much useless to me without support for exporting ProRes and DNxHD files. With this LR becomes a powerful asset manager that could be used to collect together footage from multiple sources/codecs and transcode it all for editing. As mentioned in a previous thred, XML support would make it even more useful in this context. There is definitly a gap in the market for an application than can handle this kind of task well.
With other manufactures floundering or neglecting their professional user base, Adobe would seem poised to take the video post crown. I wonder if Lightroom could be part of the takeover?

As I understand it Andy, its intention is to remain a photographers program, not a videographers program.  The basic video features are available for lightweight management of videos coming from digital cameras, but it's not going too much further than that at this point in time.  Of course that may change in the future, but we'll all have to wait and see on that one.

  • Render error with h.264 and Image sequence

    Hi,
I have simple animation I want to render out. Problem is when I export it as h.264, error happens on one frame like you can see here.
Whith image sequence, Motion will render skipping frames here and there so some part are just fine, but some part are not.
Also some frame has same green error just like with h.264. I'm rendering as PNG.
I also tested rendering as Prores HQ and that one came just fine. Weird isn't it?!?
Any idea what might cause this?
I need h.264 for preview purpose and final result as image sequence...
    Thanks

    Hi,
Thanks for response. Sorry, but I can not share project file since it's client work.
Anyway, I think latest 5.0.3 update might be issue. My Mac setup is OSX 10.7.3 on Macbook Pro (2010) with i7 and GeForce GT 330M.
I have also older Macbook (I think it's 2008 model with only version of unibody Macbook) which has also same OSX 10.7.3, but Motion 5.0.2. Tested with very same project and rendered out without any problem!
So, is there any way to reinstall one step older version of Motion after installing 5.0.3???

  • Edge and image sequences

Can you set a edge element (div) on the stage to play a image sequence? for example a frame animation rendered from AE or other source  If so how?
If not can you play a video you host on your own site and can it be an element (layer) that you can animate, group, or mask like any other graphic ?
    Thanks

    Mylenium is correct.

  • FCS and image sequences (TGA...) : how works the proxy creation?

    Hello,
I would like to know how work FCS with image sequences (TGA, TIFF sequences...) for proxy creation.
For example, the image sequences are created by 3D workstation at the speed of one frame per second.
Does FCS create a proxy each time the folder is checked? The old proxy is delated?
    Thank you for your answer

Jim is right. You can't replace a clip with an image sequence.
If you are rendering your comps from one system, follow Jim's sage advice.
But, in the cases when I do a multi-system network 3d render, there is
no way for all systems to write to the same Uncompressed AVI file...
so rendering to an image sequence is the only option.
    You say:
...for speed reasons -  converting them to lower res quicktime files
and using those to edit in Premiere Pro.
You might consider converting your sequences to both a low-res proxy for editing,
and also convert to full-res lossless codec AVI files at the same time for swapping out later.

  • Image size/resolution question

I’m starting to get to know Keynote (3.0.2) for the first time.
My Document Slide Size is set to 1024x768. I’m building slides by dragging and dropping up to four jpegs on to one slide.
Q1: Is a resolution of 72dpi sufficient for these images? I’m utilizing original images at anything from 72dpi to 300dpi – if I downsize them all to 72dpi before dropping them in is that OK?
Q2: Is it OK, when an image is to be used on a slide at 500px375px for the original image to be that size? Or is advisable to use Keynote to resize down from a larger image?
I’m just looking for the best quality on the screen.
Lots of good advice on this forum.
Thank you, in advance, for any help.

Basically, don't worry about dpi (dots per inch), only worry about dots. That is, your 500x375 pixel image has a certain number of dots per side, but its dpi could be almost anything, but the dpi is irrelevant for Keynote. (A 500x375 image at 300dpi is exactly the same file size as 500x375 at 72dpi - the total number of pixels in the image is exactly the same, all that's changed is how it translates into inch dimensions - the 300dpi one will be ~4x smaller in inch dimensions). All that matters is the outer dimension and how that compares to the nominal dimension setting of your presentation.
Larger images take up more memory and make the file bigger. Having files significantly larger than the size you plan to project at (usually 1024x768) doesn't help much in terms of visuals. Keynote does a good job of scaling images up and down if the display device output is different than the nominal size of the presentation. Keynote is much faster at dealing with large images that PPT is on a Mac, so the penalty is not there if you use large images.
As a general rule, unless I'm really trying to minimize file size or the image is gigantic in kb, I don't bother with resizing ahead of time, it's just not worth the hassle to me. I try not to drop in multiple mb jpegs, for example, but anything around an mb or less is not worth downrezzing. My company regularly produces 30-50mb decks, so we're just used to it.
Uprezzing small files significantly should be avoided, as it obviously leads to pixelation and artefacts that are distracting. Having said that, Keynote does as good a job as you can expect in this area.
Unless I'm missing something (I'm not a Keynote power user), Keynote lacks the file compression tools of Powerpoint (esp on PC, which allows images to be down-rezzed and cropped portions of images to be discarded, which has dramatic effect on reducing file size). So if you need to keep Keynote file size small, you need to do the legwork to reduce the image file (as opposed to just dpi) sizes before importing them.

  • Desktop dimension and image of art question

    hello photoshopers.
ive done a canvas, and have made a border.when i set my artwork as my desktop background its not adjusting right.only the right side of my frame
can be seen, the bottom and top frames are cut off.how can i figure out the appropriate canvas size so i may adjust my artwork to my desktop.
i have a 24inch monitor, has that also got to do with how my desktop displays images?thank you

    hello scott.
    ok i solved that one out.checked my monitors resolution 1920 x 1080
    all is good now.
    2011/6/7 <[email protected]>:
What's you monitor resolution? 1900x1480? 1650x??? Whatever that is - those are the dimensions you need to use.

  • Hierarchical keywords and Image Info Toolkit question

I presently use Image Info Toolkit with a controlled vocabulary for keywording and I'm trying to find a way of doing the same thing in Aperture. Here's my present keyword setup:
IIT works by having a cascading set of keyword windows. You can drill down to the desired level of detail, then apply the entire 'tree' to an image by drag and drop eg.
Europe > UK > England > North Yorkshire > Whitby.
All of the words are applied to the IPTC, plus you can assign synonyms EG Europe, EU, EEC.
I've seen in my demo version of Aperture the ability to create the cascading set of keywords, but it doesn't seem to apply all of the branch, just the bottom word. I see the others are greyed out. Does this mean they are not embedded, or would they be applied on any exported images, say for stock library submissions?
I'm pretty impressed with my demo version so far and if I can get a workflow I like, I can see me scrapping IIT and Bridge.
    AAny suggestions very welcome.

  • FCP 7 and iChat Theater resolution question?

Is there any possible way to tweek the output of FCP7 to get a better image out of the box into iChat? I work in DVPROHD 720p 59.97 and the iChat window is pixelated as **** and I cannot even make out the lower 3rds or any of my fullscreens, seems like this feature was an after thought with no controls at all. I wanted to get this upgrade because my sling box got bricked from the last firmware update and I do not want to spend the money Sling wants to get it fixed. I figured if Sling can do this for regular tv, why can't Apple? I guess because they do not have a hardware accelerator box to make things look better over the net, since this is not the primary function of FCP. But my situation demands it, I live in Portland, my boss lives in Alameda, and posting proofs via iWeb takes render time, albeit only about 25mins now that I can use all my cores via compressor now, so it's not that big of a deal, but being able to make changes on the fly is huge.

Problem solved, the laptop I was using in my test bed was an older modle G4 iBook, I guess the whole thing hinges on processor speed, although it's processor caps at 1.42Ghz, not slow but not that fast either, I am getting more memory for it soon, see if that does not perc it up a little. I benched it with my moms MacBook pro 17inch and vouala! Clean, perfect image with tc, looks awesome! Moving onto Snow Leopard!

  • Jumpy playback from image sequences rendered in Apple Prores and then exported to h264

I will start by saying I have been using FCP since 1.0 and am in no way new to this software, but this issue has me going crazy.
    First the Specs:
MacPro 2 x 2.66 Quad cor Intel Xeon
    16 gig Ram
    OS 10.9.2
FCP 7.0.3 (sorry but I am not a fan of FCP10 at all)
In other words, a beast of a system that has played back everything I have ever built on it for years until now. So now for the issue: I work with an amazing 3D Max builder and we have created a building animation exported from that program into and image sequence ( we have tried JPG, TGA and PNG still all with the same effect). I open Quicktime 7 Pro, build the image sequence, save as .mov, import into FCP and drop it into my 1080p30 Apple Prores (HQ ... we also tried SQ) timelines. The timeline renders perfectly and I can play the video perfectly through my system out of Firewire 800 to my Motu V4HD device which then converts the signal to HDMI to my 55" LED TV. The video and playback is perfect.... until:
If I try to play back the same exact time line into an exported video file, the file will play back with random jumpyness in it. I say random since you can play it back 10 times and it will hiccup during playback at different spots in the video. If you review every frame in the file though using Quicktime 10, 7 or VLC viewer, every frame is perfect. So, it must be the data rate right? Wrong. I have exported now to H264 MP4, M4V, MOV , ect, etc at different data rates from 4mb to 40 mb per second. They all have the same randow jumpyness to it. So it must be my computer right? Nope. I have a Macbook pro that is more powerful than this machine and I rebuild the file using the same method (something I have done a thousand times before) and the exported file does the same thing on that machine. I had my friend do it on his machine... same thing. ERRRR....
We have even tried using After Effects and Premier to the same result. Rendered it straight from Quicktime Pro, same. Rendered it to 720p30, same. Render it to 24fps, same. I had another editor render it using whatever methods he wanted to use... same. Tried Compressor, SAME.  Tried Adobe Media Encoder, SAME......We even, god forbid, used a PC running Premier and built the image sequence and rendered to h264 at 30fps, 5mbs.... @#$@#$ SAME!
We just remade the 3D Studio Max export into a 60fps animation since I thought that the individual frames we appearing too far apart and thus causing the jumpyness. That was causing the playback of the upclose objects flying across the screen fast to appear jittery, but not the random playback jumps. The 60fps did smooth out the animation greatly during fast flybys, but the playback jumps are still there in all players, QT, VLC, the web, etc.
I was starting to think this issue is realted to Mavericks, but since the PC did the same thing that is not it either. I have linked a sample of the clip below exported to 720p30, 25mbs... something that is much smaller than the original and should playback smooth very easily on any of my systems.
FYI: I have now opened numerous projects I have edited over the last few years and noticed that all of them are now jumpy, so this isn't just an image sequence issue. While the other projects don't use image sequences and instead are shot footage edited together, there is still the random jump (far less than the image sequence as you will see) but they are now there... ***? I have cleared preferences in FCP which helps for a short period of time, but once exported I get the same glitch.
As I said... I am stumped... ANYONE have ideas for me to try?
Here is a sample file for you all to see and please tell me if anyone does not see the issue after playing it several times in a row.
    www.media3lv.com/switch/NORTH-sample-720p30_25mb-sec.zip
One last thing to note... my main goal for these videos is YouTube or Vimeo playback via our company website. I have a few other animations online right now using YouTube and the problem is also showing there. At first I thought it was just my videos, but I have looked at numerous YouTube videos now showing 3D animation and alot of them are jumpy.
    www.supernap.com/supernap-building-design.html
    www.supernap.com/supernap-tscif-exchange.html
These don't show the issue as bad since the camera fly is much slower, but why is this occuring and is it coming from my source, or is this a known youtube issue? I can program this using out own modules, but YouTube and Vimeo allow for multiple resolutions and a checker script which makes it easier to share over all devices at all quality up to 1080p.
    Advice is welcome and appreciated?

I have tried at actual, full screen, using 1080p30 size from the original compressed to 4mbs (something my system can handle without blinking), 720p30, etc. etc. etc.  Nothing stops the jumps. Even the activity monitor shows only 5%-15% processing being used by QT and/or FCP.
I plan to pull my old G5 out of the closet, it runs 10.6.8 and is still rock solid for video editing in FCP7.  If it plays smooth on that 8 year old system then I know it's Mavericks. I'll try that tonight. It floors me though why the original 1080p30 will playback perfect via FCP and Motu, but once I turn of external monitoring and just try to play it via the preview monitor it is jumpy as **** and then the exported file does the same thing.  So strange.  I even deleted prefences of FCP and that does help with screen playback initially, but it always gets jumps in it after playing for a while.
I knew I should not have started using Mavericks and I HATE FCP10.

  • Can I create a RAW image Sequence in Photoshop CS6?

    Hello Photoshop Gurus,
I'm posting this because I've tried searching for an answer but I've only found one and it doesn't work for me.  I'm trying to create a RAW image sequence in Photoshop CS6 on a mac.  the box is greyed out.  The only answer I've found is to disable jpeg support in preferences but that didn't work.
Just trying to create a timelapse from an image sequence without having to spend $20/month renting After Effects!
    Thanks!

Do you have the Extended version of photoshop cs6?
(not sure if you need the extended version or not)
    more info:
Photoshop Help | Importing video files and image sequences
It might be that you need to convert the images to another file format such as tif.

  • Why is there no option to render as an image sequence?

I am using After effects cs6 and when i try to choose a format there is no option to save as an image sequence. This goes for any clip I try to render. The picture below is where I am having the problem, under the format tab. There are only about 10 options under the tab and image sequence is not one of them. Any help would be great.

Here's what I see in the Format drop-down list on a Mac.  What do you see?

  • Rendering very high-resolution image sequence

I'm in the process of rendering a very high-resolution image sequence (8k, 2:1 aspect ratio). Yes, in this case it really is necessary to render such a large image.
Not entirely surprisingly, I'm getting an error during rendering. "Unable to allocate space for an 8000x4000 pixel image buffer."
I have a relatively powerful machine (Mac Pro, 8 cores, 16gb ram, plenty of hard drive space)
How should I tune the memory settings for this process? Also, are there any "under the hood" tweaks that I can make in AE to optimize it for rendering these large files.
    Thanks!

We get questions like this often around here and I, too, will be interested by the destination for this rendering.
Such a mosaic cannot be displayed from a single device so it's not necessary at all to render it as a complete frame. If you are going to a digital signage system, there are workarounds for importing the source video that should be provided by the signage driver's mfr. If you're going out to several synced display systems, render them as individual movies.

  • 5K Retina iMac can't open Image Sequence quicktime 7 Pro and 10.10 Yosemite

Brand new and fully loaded iMac 5K crashes every time I attempt to open an image sequence in Quicktime 7 Pro, a feature that is not available in Quicktime X.  I have retried, re-installed, and still issues across the board.
    Someone please fix this...
    System Specs:
    OSX 10.10
    iMac (Retina 5K, 27-inch, Late 2014)
    4 GHz Intel Core i7
    32 GB 1600 MHz DDR3
    AMD Radeon R9 M295X 4096 MB
    Quicktime 7 Pro 7.6.6 (1709)
    Quicktime Player 10.4
To replicate, just open quicktime 7 pro, File>> Open Image Sequence, and then load a camera card full of photos and just wait for it to crash.

If so, please send me a screen shot of your quicktime components folder, maybe you have a codec that I don't.
Also have some legacy codecs turned back on (but Photo-JPEG as used to store image sequence files is not one of them and remains on by default under Yosemite).
Also using JPEG compressed photos from a 24 MP Nikon but restricting resolution to 2560x1920 (4:3), 2560x1707 (3:2), and 2560x1440 (16:9) with max number of photos limited to 2^16-1 (65535).
Also posted a screen capture of my quick test to ensure the QT 7 Pro "Open Image Sequence" option was still working. (Video may be a bit sluggish as I was using QT X to screen capture my use of QT 7 Pro to open an image sequence and forgot that I was also simultaneously still encoding How to Train Your Dragon 2 for my iTunes library.) You may wish to check your QT 7 PLIST file as a corrupted file can sometimes cause the app to crash.
