42HL196 causing IR remote interference

My 42HL196 appears to be emitting modulated IR light which is causing interference with the IR remote of one of the set top devices I use with this TV.  I know the problem is coming from the TV backlight, since the problem arises immediately when I turn the tv ON, and goes away when the TV is turned off or when I hold a towel or blanket in front of the screen.  I didn't think this was technically possible from CCFL backlighting, until a quick web search of "LCD IR Interference" turned up a surprizing number of pages of links describing the problem with various LCD and plasma TVs from a number of manufacturers.  After reading some of these, further experimenting revealed that the problem with my set occurs for a few minutes right after it is turned ON, after which the set top box starts correctly receiving IR remote commands again.
It was suggested in many of the search links that one simply wait a few minutes for the TV to "warm up" before trying to use the affected remotes, others suggested disabling auto brightness/backlight settings of the TV, or placing tape or thin paper over the front IR window of the affected device.  Still others recommend replacing the TV with a model that uses LED backlighting, which, so far, haven't been reported with this problem (I've confirmed the absence of the problem with my other set , an LED-backlit Sharp Aquos).
These are all unacceptable solutions to me, so I opted instead to minimize the amount of TV panel light reaching the front of the device without diminishing its sensitivity to the remote.  The device couldn't be relocated from its position on the TV stand, so I glued a small, 3/4inch long 3/8inch diameter black plastic pipe right onto the IR window of the device, having the open pipe end facing the sofa.  This seems to work well as long as there is nothing close to the TV unit that can reflect panel light back into the added "telescope hood".  The remote range doesn't seem to be affected as long as I use it  directly in front of the TV stand, so I can live with this solution.  The added wart on the front of the set top device is a bit clunky looking, but certainly no worse than the piece of masking tape suggested by some.  I suspect the pipe length could be shortened but I didn't experiment any further.
I note that there are a few Toshiba owners on this forum with similar complaints, albeit not specifically about the 42HL196. I discovered in my search one manufacturer (not Toshiba) actually admitted on their support website to a design flaw in certain series LCD TV models, offering a free circuit board replacement in those sets where the problem was experienced.  I have not seen any similar response from Toshiba, at least not to the few complaints on this forum regarding IR remote interference.

called toshiba today, neither they nor the engineer's manager were aware that the engineer failed to turn up.... personally i've had enough.
i can't see a way forward other than legal action. i've lost two days due to Toshiba messing up, and their typical reponce seems to be try updating a random driver or change a random part... i cannot afford to carry on with guess work. i asked for them to replace the laptop and was led on a wild goosechase... had to speak to 5 departments, eventually, one of the managers told me the case was escalated and i had no option but to wait another 48 hours.... how can i trust them to get back to me after they've repeatedly messed up? and to add insult to injury, the manager gave me a contact number i could try calling his department on should i need to... i know i wrote the number down correctly because the entire conversation was recorded... and guess what? he gave the wrong number to his own department. i found the right number online, tried calling, was told he just returned to his desk, was put on hold, 5 mins later was told he was in a meeting and will call back... did i get a call back? nope.
i will wait until wednesday afternoon, their 48 hours... after that it's a letter to their head office, 7 days to resolve the problem, should they fail to do it, i am taking them to small claims court for replacement laptop or refund, + expences for lost time and expences.
well done toshiba.
i've had enough. will not be updating this forum anymore.... i'll now let the courts decide.

    Hi,
I suspect that this application conflicts with Terminal printer redirection, whether all applications using "Start the following program at logon" option have this

  • Vulnerability Scanner causes Flash Remoting Status Description to return null

I'm having an issue with Flash Remoting that we have been able to track down as being cause by our vulnerability scanner.  About 2 minutes into the scan process it causes flash remoting to fail and it does not recover until the ColdFusion Application Service is restarted.  What's worse is that I'm not seeing any errors in the log to identify that there is a problem and it's a error the end user is seeing and reporting to notify me of the issue.
Any thoughts of what might be causing this?  Is there any logging I can enable to help troubleshoot / identify when I have a problem?

  • Can AE location/placement cause Home Theater interference?

Right now, due to the Internet access point in my home, my AE (upstairs in one corner) is about as far away from my home theater as it can get (downstairs in the other corner). Since my HT is where my Apple TV and PS3 are -- as well as where my wife and I do most of our wireless laptop work, it makes a lot of sense to have Cox Cable come out and relocate the Internet access point to downstairs. In doing so, that would mean my modem and AE would all be housed in my HT Entertainment Cabinet -- where all my other equipment is (TV, PS3, receiver, speakers, Satellite receiver, etc.). What would be nice about this set-up, is I could run Ethernet from my AE to my PS3 and Apple TV. But, will the AE dual band wireless signals be at all degregated by all the other equipment in the same area? Will this cause any sort of 'noise' across my other components -- or visa-versa? Please advise. Thanks!

    Welcome to the discussions, ChillOne!
It's a great idea to relocate the AirPort Extreme near the equipment so that you can use much faster and more reliable ethernet connections.
A simple modem could probably go into the cabinet if you keep it several feet away from other electronics, (check with your ISP for their recommendations on this) but the AirPort Extreme should be placed where it can provide a good wireless signal for your home. That means it must not be in any enclosed areas. Think of the AirPort Extreme as a water sprinkler and you want to get the room as wet as possible. Maybe the AirPort Extreme could go on top of the cabinet?
Unfortunately, it's not possible to predict wireless interference issues in advance of any installation. I think you are wise to realize that it will really help to keep the AirPort Extreme at least 3-4 feet away from other electronics or further if possible, even if it means running longer ethernet cables than you might have originally planned.

  • Magic Trackpad causing Bluetooth audio interference

Was having intermittent bluetooth audio connection problems; on/off; and realized the cause was the new Magic Trackpad I had just set up. When it's bluetooth connected; it will interfere with my other bluetooth audio reception.
Is there a fix for this?
Update: Disconnecting my Magic Mouse ended the interference; I wonder if the two are not able to run together?

Crosspost from the thread specified above:
I am experiencing a problem like this one.
I have a Motorola DC800 A2DP gateway and a Magic Mouse. Music sounds perfectly until I connect the mouse through BT: at this point, audio will only sound for 1 second and then it will stop and remain silent.
I have tried resetting preferences, etc. and now I know there is a conflict between these devices: as soon as I disconnect the mouse, music starts coming through again.
This is very very annoying...if anyone knows of a workaround so I can use them both simultaneously I would really appreciate if it is posted here.

  • IPhone causes computer speaker interference

So, I purchased a nice $250 Bose Companion 3 speaker set for my G5. Always kepts getting weird noises from the speakers just all day long. Little dobops and beeps and static. Just was odd. I thought maybe it was the G5 causing it as I heard G5 Power Supplies that may cause weird noises. Anyway, ends up being my darned iPhone <grin>. The last couple of days I have not had the noises and I thought it was great and I finally got things wired up the way it should be. Different electrical jacks, no wires overlapping, all that jazz.
So tonight I was charging my iPhone over near my big screen TV and grabbed my phone and it was maybe a foot from the front of the TV and I got the same weird noises from it.
So, somehow the iPhone must have something going on that if within a certain distance from other devices, may cause interference. Normally my iPhone was at least a foot from my speakers but I guess that was close enough.
Anyway, so there you go. hehehe
    tj

This isn't a problem specific to the iPhone. My iPhone does the same, as well as my last Sony Ericsson Z525a (no data plan, wifi, etc.), and my wife's Blackberry. I tried changing speaker arrangements, wiring methods and paths, and ferrite rings. Nothing stops it. Shielded or un-shielded speakers, built in amps or not, the phones just cause noise. Putting the iphone in airplane mode stops the noise, but...

  • Exception Handling for errors caused by Remote tables

    Hello
I am trying to run a process that retrieves data from a remote table. Unfortunately occasionally the process fails because I exceed the number of simultaneous sessions allowed for the relevant table. I want to be able to handle this by directing the user to an errors page that I have built.
Unfortunately I cannot seem to be able to handle the exception. I have included an EXCEPTION WHEN OTHERS section but this does not seem to work.
Is it possible to handle these sort of errors? If it is possible I want to transfer this process into an asynchronous process so that the query can run in the background.

  • Error connecting Jdev with ESB and BPEL - caused by remote HTTP Server

Hi everyone, hopefully someone can help me with my problem.
I have 3 servers in my cluster, one straight web server, one SOA server and one J2EE server. I am trying to configure Jdev for developing SOA applications.
I was able to create the application server connection without a problem, but when I try to create the Integration server connection, I get:
    Application Server: OK
    BPEL Process Manager Server: FAILED
    ESB Server: FAILED
With the details for the failed connections:
    BPEL: java.net.ConnectException:Connection refused: connect
ESB: ESB Server connection could not be established.
    Connection refused: connect
So, I know why this is happening. The ESB server doesn't have an HTTP server on it; The web server is the server for the BPELControl and the ESBControl.
So, I add the Web Server machine as an AS (it has no oc4j instance) and if I use that AS as the Integration Server, I get OK for BPEL and ESB but a failure for the Application server.
Now I know this topology must be more common than it seems, so hopefully one of you knows how I can work these problems out.
    Thanks,
    Jamie McLaughlin

    Hello Jamie,
We are in a similar situation, as we have web-server and app-server separate. and soa suite is running on the app-server.
I got the exact same errors as you described in your note.
i am able to deploy services from jdeveloper (per your second posting) even though as & is connection entries raised those errors.
Could you let us know what approach your team is now using with respect to defining connections in jdeveloepr & deploying services? Did you get any suggestions from oracle support, or others, which helped you resolve this situation ? (even though we are able to deploy the services, the connection entry test errors are kind of annoying)
    Thanks

After that warning,my sound is off (ipod, youtube, cam) my ipohone doesnt have sound, just in headset and in ringtones.

  • Microsoft keyboard causing might mouse interference.

I have a Microsoft 7000 bluetooth keyboard paired with my Mac Mini. My bluetooth mighty mouse works fine until I use they keyboard. Once the keyboard awakes from sleeping the mouse is jumpy. If I turn the mouse on and off it solves the problem.
Both will work fine if the keyboard has been active and the mouse reset. As soon as the keyboard sleeps and is reconnected the mouse needs to be turned on and off otherwise it jumps.
Any suggestions? I'd like to try to fix this instead of spending $80 on an Apple keyboard.

I haven't seen this addressed anywhere, and I have the same problem. My BT mighty mouse and keyboard (the aluminum one), both lag significantly while I perform any sort of file transfer. This includes downloading from the web, or transferring through my LAN to other computers. Nothing else is affected other than bluetooth. That means that my MB keyboard and trackpad still work normally, even though the BT devices are going crazy.
I'd love to see this addressed, since it really does get annoying.

  • Firewire Issues Caused By Apple Isight!

For months, I've been having an intermittent Firewire audio problem, which I initially thought was A) Quad G5 or B) RME Fireface 800!
Testing the RME on another Quad G5 resulted in no errors, though for piece of mind a replacement RME was given! Back home the same intermittent problems occurred, it had to be the Quad G5???
Livid, this time I persisted on Google searching for FW issues, (a few hours later) to my amazement I came across an article on MacFixIt, that pointed the finger to Apple's own iSight FW camera, which I had connected!
The transcript below explains how to resolve this problem, it worked for me!
Mini-Tutorial: Dealing with FireWire problems (drives not mounting, devices unrecognized, etc.)
As an Apple-invented technology, FireWire (IEEE 1394a and IEEE 1394b) should be (and usually is) one of the most solid and efficient means for interfacing with external peripherals. Indeed Apple's "i"-branded devices -- the iPod and iSight -- have, in large part, been made possible by the quick transfer rates, power sourcing, and hot pluggability offered by FireWire.
Occasionally, however, conflicts between FireWire-connected devices arise and can result in a variety of issues including DV cameras dropping frames, FireWire drives not mounting, and erratic behavior from the iPod (disappearing from iTunes, etc.). In the midst of these issues, you might also experience "buffer underrun" errors when trying to burn CDs or DVDs with FireWire-connected recorders.
The iSight is especially notorious for causing issues of this nature, and exhibiting symptoms.
There exist a number of methods for dealing with FireWire device interference, a few of which are explored here.
Switching Ports The first procedure you should try when experiencing a problem that you believe to be caused by device interference is to simply reconfigure the arrangement in which your FireWire peripherals are connected.
Try switching each device to a different port, or temporarily disconnecting one or more of the devices. In particular, if you are a PowerMac G5 owner, trying switching devices from the front to back ports or vice versa.
Adding an external hub In some cases, it appears that FireWire devices are not drawing enough power from the computer. This can cause a sundry of strange issues, including apparent conflicts between devices and unexpected power-offs during device operation. In these instances, adding an externally powered FireWire hub can clear things up.
One of the reasons an "under-powered" situation can occur is that different Mac models have varying power capacities available through their FireWire ports.
PowerBooks and iBooks have the least, generating around 7 watts. The iMac G5 also generates a relatively low amount of FireWire power, sharing 8 watts between its two FireWire 400 ports.
The Power Mac G5 shares 15 watts between its one FireWire 800 port and two FireWire 400 ports.
Place devices on different FireWire busses/Isolate the iSight Similar to the above procedure, adding another FireWire bridge -- via an extra PCI-based FireWire adapter or another means -- can eliminate conflicts from devices that reside on the same bridge.
Power cycling the system Simply cycling the power on your system may be enough to temporarily eliminate a few FireWire conflict issues.
Shut down your Mac, and disconnect all FireWire devices as well as the computer's power cord. Leave the system off for about 10 minutes, then plug it back in. First turn your Mac back on, then re-attach the FireWire devices one at a time and check for the conflict to resurface.
Disconnect the iSight As noted above, the most common cause of interference is Apple's own iSight. In case after case, simply disconnecting this single device has eliminated problems with other FireWire devices.
Disconnecting the iSight has proved particularly successful for an issue where the iPod disappears from the Desktop and from the iTunes playlist, while the iPod status screen cycles from the Apple logo to a "Do not Disconnect" message over and over.
The exact reasons why the iSight causes more than its fair share conflicts with other FireWire devices are many, and sometimes unclear. One potential source of conflict, however, could be the unit's high bandwidth usage.
The iSight captures video at a 640 x 480 pixel resolution, at 30 frames per second in millions of colors. Such throughput uses a significant chunk of the standard FireWire port's 400 Mbps bandwidth. As such, when other devices are connected, the bandwidth requirements for satisfactory performance may not be met.
Apply the latest updates Make sure that your FireWire drives are using the latest firmware (check the manufacturers' Web site) and the most recent iPod update has also been applied.
Of higher importance, if you have an iSight, is the iSight 1.0.2 updater. In a large number of cases it has resolved conflicts caused by the camera.
Re-apply the most recent Mac OS X combo updater In some cases, re-applying the most recent combo updater can resurrect seemingly defunct FireWire ports and allow devices -- drives included -- to be recognized again.
The most recent combo updater is available from Apple's download page.
Clear caches Try using a tool like Tiger Cache Cleaner or Cocktail to remove potentially corrupt system caches. Restart, then check if your FireWire devices are recognized.
Ps. There was no iSight connected when testing the RME on another Quad!

  • Is my Mac Pro the cause of high pitch monitor noise?

I am encountering a faint but persistent high pitch noise through my Yamaha HS-50M monitors when my Edirol FA-66 interface is plugged into my computer via firewire ca ble.
I've read all these threads which sound very similar to my issue and have tried all the pertinent recommendations presented so far:
    Monitor buzzing noise NEED HELP!
Help fixing signal hum/mouse coming out of monitors?
Electric shocks and Noise in a home studio
KVR :: View topic - Interference question. Computer and external audio interface
Just to be clear, my problem is similar but not identical to the problems listed in the threads above. Mouse movement or computer activity doesn't effect the monitor noise I'm hearing at all, it is merely a constant sustained high frequency tone that's emitted from my monitors when my FA-66 interface is plugged into my MacPro via firewire cable. My speakers are silent (aside from their own self noise) so long as my FA-66 isn't connected directly to my computer. Even when my FA-66 is powered on via its AC adaptor but not connected to my computer via firewire cable there is no added noise in my monitors. It's just when I make the firewire connection between my interface and my computer that the high pitch noise appears in my monitors.
I used to run my Edirol off of my older MacBook and never had this issue. I just recently upgraded to a new MacPro and am encountering this issue for the first time.
Since the noise is eliminated when I disconnect the firewire cable from my interface, I believe the sound is being caused by interference from my computer, which is then transmitted through my firewire cable into my interface.
    My setup is this:
Grounded Wall Outlet > Furman Power Conditioner > MacPro Desktop Machine > Edirol FA-66 > Monitors
I am using TRS-XLR Mogami Speaker cables to connect my interface to my monitors and am using Mogami cables throughout my system.
All of my audio gear is being powered through my Furman power conditioner: my computer, my FA-66 interface via its AC adaptor (not firewire bus powered), my speaker monitors, and all my other audio equipment.
I don't believe I'm picking up interference from any of my other cables and wiring and this doesn't seem like a grounding issue. Like I mentioned, the noise is gone when I disconnect the firewire cable from my FA-66 interface.
I do have some other hardware in my setup (my computer screen monitor, a USB hub, AC power supplies and cords to power external hard drives, a lamp) that are receiving power from a separate surge protector strip plugged directly into a different wall outlet than the one my Furman conditioner is plugged into. I don't believe any of these other devices are the cause of the interference noise because when I unplug all these items from their respective wall outlet, I still hear the exact same noise when my FA-66 is plugged into my computer via firewire cable.
All signs seem to point to my firewire cable and/or my computer.
Originally I started with a different firewire cable and swapped it out for a newer and higher quality, gold-plated firewire cable meant to cut down on interference. This cable swap did help reduce some of the noise my monitors were picking up, but did not eliminate it entirely.
I then invested in some ferrite core clamps and placed those around each end of my firewire cable (one right by my computer's firewire port & one right by my FA-66's firewire port). This helped a little more but did not eliminate the high pitched sound entirely, just made it even quieter. The hole diameter of the ferrite core clamps is slightly larger than the diameter of my firewire cable, however, and I'm going to order more clamps with a smaller hole diameter that will ensure a snugger fit around my firewire cable. Do you think this may help things more?
I also lifted the grounding pin in my Edirol, tied a copper grounding wire around it and connected the other end to my MacPro's metal case with alligator clamps in an effort to better ground the two suspect pieces in the chain. This seemed to have little to no effect beyond what the ferrite cores were able to clean up. (I got this idea from the GS thread contained in the first link above.) I don't know much about hardware electronics but thought I would try this out just to see if it would help. The fact that it didn't help, to me, seems to reaffirm that the system is grounded properly, because if it weren't I would have possibly noticed an improvement by making a grounded connection between my interface and computer. Please correct me if I'm wrong about this.
I even tried plugging my Furman power conditioner into an entirely different wall outlet, but this didn't change things at all. I do have one more unused wall outlet I can try but don't think this will make much of a difference because I'm 99.99% sure this isn't a grounding problem and that the sockets I'm using are properly grounded. My Furman isn't registering anything abnormal and seems to be functioning properly.
As of right now I've been able to make significant improvement to the noise problem and have eliminated it by 90%. The high pitch noise through my monitors is virtually eliminated but I still notice a faint bit of added noise when interface is powered on and connected to my computer via firewire versus when the firewire cable is disconnected.
Could my MacPro be outputting some kind of interference which is being picked up by my firewire cable and transmitted to interface and monitors? I've read that sometimes a computer's power supply unit can output a large amount of EMI or dirty electrical interference. It seems surprising to me that Mac's professional desktop machine would cause a fundamental issue like this though, especially since it is designed for being able to work in a professional audio recording setup.
Any other ideas people can provide as to what may be causing my added interference and how to treat it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance for your help!

What kind of sound card are you using exactly? It seems like you're sound card is picking up EMI or RFI from your computer when it's plugged into a wall outlet. Are you using a power conditioner in your setup to help clean up your power supply?
Try googling EMI & RFI, there are many online resources which detail how to troubleshoot and deal with these problems. http://www.arrl.org/radio-frequency-interference-rfi
I finally solved my problem by upgrading to a higher quality audio interface (Focusrite Pro 40). This was able to cut out the high frequency RFI signal being output from my MacPro computer. I get the feeling many of Mac's higher end computers tend to output dirty electrical signals which is why so many people have this similar problem.
Try cleaning up your power supply, then maybe use different, higher quality sound cards or interfaces with your setup to see if the issue gets solved. The problem most likely lies with your computer and if you can get a high quality interface that can cut out the noise, that may be your only solution. It worked for me.
    Good luck!

  • 3GS I Phone Static/Interference - Does anyone else have this problem??

    Hi,
I bought the 3GS on a 24 month contract at the beginning of this month and have noticed that even though my phone is not receiving a call - its interfering being static with my fixed line at work. Its horrible and annoying as my fixed line at work rings and all you can hear is the interference of the I Phone colleagues started complaining - so I turned off the push notifications and wifi connection at work bearing in mind the phone isnt even on my desk!!! but it causing so much interference and this has resorted to me turning my phone OFF!!!!
I have never had this problem with any other phone.
The static/interference happens when in the car and it affects the radio!!!
What is going on? does anyone have any suggestions?
I called O2 and they were like dont know what that could be and we cant do anything!!! So now what???? Im not happy at all .....I dont have insurance on my phone either.
    Kind Regards

Perhaps I should clarify my question.  When I schedule alerts (reminders) in my calendar the phone reverses them.  Example:  Alert 1 - 1 day; Alert 2 - 1 hour.  When I save the reminders the phone reverses them.  Example:  Alert 1 now reads 1 hour and Alert 2 reads 1 day.  So frustrating.  I've even tried putting them in reverse order and saving them and the phone then keeps them in the right order. I think my phone is possessed...JK

  • Opening VI block diagram engaging remote instrument control

This is a phenomena that doesn't seem to cause any major functionality issues - but I'm still curious how opening the block
diagram window of a VI can automatically engage remote control of any
connected instruments that are powered up - even when the VI itself is
not running?  The only problem I have with this is if manual control is needed prior to running the VI.
Has anyone else encountered this issue?

What, exactly, causes the "REMOTE" indicator on your device to come
on?  It looks like if you have any VISA resource objects on your
block diagram and open the block diagram, LabVIEW searches what devices
are out there.  I would be surprised if your instruments reponds
to a simple query by going into remote mode, but that may be what's
happening.  Can you check the manual for your instrument to see
what commands put the device in the remote state?

  • 60005,RF: Interference Profile Failed in radio 2.4GHz, per controller profile settings

Can someone please explain to me what seeing this on WLC Config Analyzer means?
    Thanks...

You are seeing this message (also in the log of the WLC) because the level of interference for the 2.4Ghz radio of the particular access-point is higher than the configured (or recommended) threshold.
You can find this information on the WLC on Monitor -> Access Points -> Radios -> 802.11b/g/n. You can tune those threshold on Wireless -> 802.11b/g/n -> RRM -> General.
The question for now is how high are those values and do you have problems because of this and the answer to that question is; it depends. If you think the values are too high or if you experiencing issues I would go to the location with a spectrum analyzer and see if I find the cause of the interference.
