5.1 Audio for Encore

First of all, let me start with the fact that I'm a switcher from Final Cut Studio to Production Suite, so I'm not sure if I'm just not looking at this problem correctly. I have a finished film, and have received 5.1 audio stems (5 surround channels plus a LFE channel).  I'm trying to get these stems into a format I can use for Encore for a standard def DVD (not BluRay). I seem to be able to create a 6 channel QuickTime or .wav file, but Encore won't read it.  Am I missing something obvious?
Thanks in advance!

MusicContductor - I couldn't agree more.  It makes zero sense to re-enter picture edit when you have a completed sound mix - and pay $300 bucks for the privelege (yes, I know licenses cost money - I'm in the business, and I don't expect tools to be free).  I guess what astounds me is that even Media Encoder can't do the job - while Apple Compressor (for $50) can do that and just about any other codec you can license into QuickTime.  I am testing Production Suite as a potential replacement for our Final Cut Studio seats, but despite a few advantages (menu and button creation in Photoshop), the apps still don't appear to be ready for real professional post production on their own.

  • Wish list for Encore

I don't see a wish list category here so maybe we could start one.
My number one irritant in Encore 2.0 is the default ON of "Sync Button Text and Name." This in on by default and it should be off or unchecked in my opinion.
I do all my menus in Photoshop and import them into Encore. My buttons are all set. Then when I start assigning buttons to timelines I forget to uncheck this and it screws up my PS buttons by changing them to whatever I called my timelines. I really hate this. Thank goodness for undo, but when a default is never what you use, then the reverse should be the default. At least that's my two cents worth.
    Thanks,
    [email protected]

posted this earlier in another thread until i found out that this is where i should have posted.
    so here is my list:
    1. The ability to import power point slide shows into encore as a slide show. This would make it really handy to import some ones previously created slide show and turn it into a DVD slide show. It doesn't have to do all the fancy animations or transitions, just import the slide shows. Yes I know I can export from power point to jpgs. Have you really looked at the results? Crap is all I have to say. Of course I could recreate them in Photoshop or some other program that lets picture and titling be created. You know how much extra time that step costs?
    2. Could you make a project manager for encore that is similar to the one in premier? I would like to be able to trim the project and remove "temporary files". I especially hate the number of temporary menus that accumulate in the menus folder. I want to be able to back up the necessary files only, not all the junk. it would also be nice if it would grab the video(I) that make up the project and compile them in to the folder that I designate as the new project folder, just like premier does.
    3. its not really to hard to now, but it would be nice if there was some method for telling encore that you are creating an Easter egg. Currently there are a few steps to doing it and it is all manual. It would be nice if you could designate a button as being an Easter egg and then tell encore which choice of ways you want it to handle it. For instance is it just a simple Easter egg where you go on the right direction on a button and viola, you found it. Or is it a button that you go to and it goes to a duplicate menu and then you need to hit the right button a couple of times and then viola, you found it. Any thing to make my DVD creation to have a few less steps.
    6. Another thing that I think encore needs has to do with the flowchart. Give me some zoom on that baby. I like it, but it would be nice if I could zoom out to look at the overall structure.
    7. The ability to normalize the audio across the entire DVD. My wife made a disc and some parts were loud and others were so quiet. It would be nice to not have to do this for each clip before in premier, but leave it till the final stage of DVD production so that it only has to be done once.
    more to come :)

  • Where is the Wish list for Encore 2?

    Hello
I have a few things that I would like to wish for in the next patch / version.

    2. Could you please put a tab in the project pane for a list of slide shows, play lists and assets? I actually like the tabs better than organizing by folders.
    3. Could you make a project manager for encore that is similar to the one in premier? I would like to be able to trim the project and remove "temporary files". 4. Can you make a key that would allow me to select multiple files when using the pick whip? Or could we just drag and drop files to a play list or to the box where the end action and such are? The pick whip looks cool, but it is so slow to get things done with it.
    5. its not really to hard to now, but it would be nice if there was some method for telling encore that you are creating an Easter egg. As time goes on and I think of more I will add to this list. If you have an idea put it here, maybe it will end up in the next patch / version.

    > My wish is they get the bloody software to work properly in the first place. There are many inadequacies in the software that I would like to see added, but frankly, this is the WORST product I have ever seen Adobe relese. I cannot produce a single DVD project without it crashing, bugging out, and generally being a pain in the butt. If you see the forums on here, and across the net, you will see I am not the only person voicing this, and I have used $20 software that fares way better than this.
    Hmmm.
I think I will probably be wasting my time here, but things are not as bad as you are making out by a long, long way.
I have personally created many hundred successful DVD projects with Encore, and whilst I have indeed experienced difficulties from time to time, I can assure you the first - and only - time I went across to the Dark Side and used DVDSP, things were considerably worse. Never has Encore taken my Audio files, and muxed them almost to the end & then replaced the audio with complete digital silence! So before you seriously go elsewhere, I would take a long hard look at all the complaints in the Apple forums as well.
As I have pointed out far too many times, the grass may look greener.....but in my experience it seldom - if ever - is. There ois no such thing as bug free software, it's impossible to achieve.
    >but from what I can tell, Encore was a "bought in" product that they absorbed when taking over another company. It seems that maybe it wasn't such a good move after all.
It wasn't a move at all - EncoreDVD is
    i licensed
from Sonic Solutions, and Adobe have not bought Sonic Solutions.
    >My concern is that software companies should not release faulty software. With regard to my hardware, I am a professional graphic and video designer with two high end, quad core workstations that I rebuild with operating systems and upgrade new hardware regularly. They are not used for anything else besides professional software. All files are saved across to a server.
I can see one of the possible problems right away.
Quad core? AFAIK, these systems simply did not exist when Encore was coded. It's quite possible you have a hardware setup that is completely untested. I may be off the mark here though.
    >I am well aware that people use hardware and situations that the developers never envisaged, but that is what Beta testing is all about.
    Twaddle.
Beta testers simply have no chance of being able to test on every possible software/hardware combination. It's not reasonable to try & achieve this - the Beta cycles are (usually) all about making sure the software works properly on the largest number of systems that can be assembled. This is not going to stop people constantly attempting to install & run it on untested combinations though - and to be brutally blunt with you, no professional company would even consider being right on the bleeding edge of current technology without having an older system set up that actually conforms to the system requirements as laid out in the product documentation. For EncoreDVD 2, this is as follows:
Intel Pentium 4 1.4GHz for DV
Intel Pentium 4 3.4GHz or Dual Intel Xeon 2.8GHz for HDV
AMD must have SSE2 instruction sets.
There is no mention at all of Dual Core, or Quad Core CPU here - therefore this has to be considered as untested, and whilst it may work, it will not be guaranteed to work.
There is also NO mention of guaranteed functionality to a server. The specs actually say:
i Dedicated 7200 rpm drive for DV and HDV editing. Striped array (RAID 0) for HD
(This is my personal opinion, not official word from Adobe, I have to add. I do not work for Adobe in any way)

  • Converting 2 channel audio from AVCHD to 5.1 audio for bluray

    Hello,
I am looking to put AVCHD video files (*.MTS) containing 5.1 audio and 2-channel (stereo) audio onto bluray.  I would like to convert the 2 channel audio to 5.1 audio, so that all of the files can be encoded onto bluray with 5.1 audio in Encore. I am using Premiere Pro CS6 version 6.0.3.  I have tried to bring the MTS files into Premiere Pro, and convert stereo audio to 5.1 using Audition.  However when the file is exported to Encore, upon transcoding there is no audio.    Please let me know what is the best way to resolve this.  Also, would I require something like Surcode plugin, or are there other ways to get around this?  Thanks.

    "Hi seaspray07,
    "Hope this clarifies."
sorry it doesn't -  it confuses me and I don't get why you want to do it this complicated way ;-)
    1. If you have problems try to simplify your workflow. Why do you try to work with dynamic link in Encore? This isn't the classic route and I don't see why you need it in this case.
    2. In a classical workflow you load  final encoded audio and video files in Encore - in this case a .m4v and a .ac3 file encoded in Adobe Media Encoder.
    3. To get this files you create a Premiere timeline with 5.1 master audio and load your clips onto it.
For all 5.1 clips Premiere will create a 5.1 audio track. For all stereo clips Premiere will create a stereo audio rack.
--> Keep in Mind you can't export a premiere audio track. That isn't possible even though this would be handy in a lot of situations. You alway only export the master audio track of a timeline. That master audio track get's it input from all audio tracks of a timeline. If there is a 5.1 audio track 6 channes are mixed to the master audio - if it's only a stereo track only L, R get's mixed up to the 5.1 master.
The master audio track is what you can hear if you play back a timeline.
    4. Why do you want to convert stereo audio tracks into 5.1 audio tracks in the timeline? It needs much more filesize/ ram slows down your playback and gives you a unhandy viewing with lots of emty audio channels... Why dont store and view a stereo track as a stereo track?
    5. If you have placed your stereo and 5.1 audio tracks on the timeline you can export the final mix via Adobe Media Encoder with the Surcode plugin as Dolby Digital 5.1 .ac3
"I sent the audio to Audition because I wanted to modify the audio file from stereo to 5.1, and bring it back into PrPro to combine with the video clip from the corresponding MTS file..."
That doesn't make any sense... because Premiere does it automatically for you without Audition. You simply have to do nothing - just place your stereo clip on the timeline and ready.
If you want to use Audition you have to have a real reason for it - for example do extensive audio work and mastering Tasks - conform it to R128 loudness or something like that.
Does this make sense to you? ;-)

  • Encore 1.5 projects not playing audio in Encore 2.0

So far, four out of five transcoded projects I created in Encore 1.5 will not play audio in Encore 2.0. I can open the projects up in 1.5 and get audio with video. I close 1.5, start up 2.0 and load the project. Previewing it results in a silent movie. No audio whatsoever.
Other projects have converted fine. I notice that no Audio Conforming goes on for the non-audio projects, while I see Audio Conforming for the lone 3min 30sec project that does have functional video. Am I missing something here?

Okay, stupid me. Not enough disk space on the drive where the project is located. Once I cleared off some space, the Audio Conforming bar went ahead and I have my audio.
By the way, I was looking at the Windows Task Manager, not the Progress panel.
I grumble just a little bit because there is no error message or notification of insufficient disk space. Only a mute Encore.

  • There Is No Audio For WRNN & For Movie Trailers

WRNN channel 6 in new jersey and new york has no audio for any of the shows that are on that channel where what you hear is a sound that is similar to what you would hear if you had no television at all when you are looking to try to set up a tv connection but can not do so. Another thing that is wrong is when you go to the search menu and put in the name of a movie the trailer for that movie is there but there is no sound. If you were to go to the search menu to put in "the departed" for example which is a martin scorcese movie with matt damon and jack nicholson you will see the trailer play but with no audio at all. Some other audio issues that exist are channel 363 encore espanol which has an all english audio when it should be in spanish and boomerang espanol 1724 which should be in spanish but it is in english. Channels 461 azteca america and 480 latv claim to have an hd version of them when you go there but when you try to watch them in hd you are redirected to telemundo hd 512. Channel 466 mega tv which was dropped on july 31 by WRNN because they were going to add al jazeera english now has its logo back which is odd because that usually means that a channel is about to be added when a logo is added where it has been reported everywhere that channel 466 should become al jazeera english at some point but now that WRNN has dropped the al jazeera new hour that was on from 5pm-6pm monday through friday that deal might not happen. Some other bizarre things that are happening is that nothing on channel 1664 ritmoson matches and you guys still have channels 394 sd and 894 hd there even though those channels got moved to 234 sd and 734 where it seems like a waste of space on the guide to keep 394 & 894.

I'm curious if anyone can verify if this issue has been fixed or still remains? Also, I'm curious as to which stores are being used, as this is important in knowing where the corrupted index lays.

  • Audio in Encore is too short

When I export multiplexed audio it causes short audio in Encore. It works fine when not multiplexing as two separate files but I prefer to have it come in as one file as it is simpler for beginning students. Mpeg DVD multiplexing has worked without a hitch for years but somehow, sometimes (but not always) the audio comes in a couple seconds short on CS6. I have seen another thread on this subject, but it didn't have a solution other than not multiplexing. Since multiplexing is still an option, it should work.

Yes, multiplexing is supported, but it has always had sometimes where it did not work as expected. You apparently had better luck than many.
Because Encore (any DVD authoring program) must de-multiplex such streams before it can build the vob containers, it has made sense to me to use the default/recommended method for MPEG2-DVD/MPEG2-Bluray/H264-Bluray - which is separate files for video and audio.
Since some of the time you will get problem results, the choice is to teach mpeg and then how to redo the export to demuxed or to teach demuxed. Either is a legitimate option.

  • No audio for clips in my event library since upgrading to iLife '09

After upgrading to iLife '09, I noticed something odd in the new iMovie. All of my clips (recorded with a Sanyo Xacti HD1A and imported into the previous version of iPhoto DO show up in the event library, but DO NOT play any sound in the event library. If I copy a clip or move it up to the project editor the audio plays there. Does anyone know why I am getting no audio for these clips in the event library or what can be done to correct the issue?
    Thanks,
    -Mike

Finally got some sound on the clips in my iMovie '09 event library. This is what worked here: I went into the Pictures folder and showed the package contents of the "iPhoto Library". I went into the "Data" folder. I went to a "2008" folder. I located the folder of the first video clip I had for the holiday footage... "Dec 14, 2008". Inside that was a QuickTime file "SANY0001" and a JPEG "SANY0001.jpg". I zipped up the "Dec 14, 2008" folder. I dragged the folder to the trash. I dragged the .zip file out to the desktop.
I opened iPhoto '09. It showed an event for Dec 14, 2008 with a dashed-line round rectangle where it would have normally shown the first frame of the video clip. I closed iPhoto '09 and opened iMovie '09. It alerted me that it needed to generate a thumbnail for some video, and after about a minute the clip was in my event library and playing audio. Not only that... ALL clips in my event library now are playing audio. I quit iMovie '09 and went back into the "iPhoto Library". A new "Dec 14, 2008" folder was there with a new "SANY0001" QuickTime file (I wonder where it got this file from... hidden cache or backup somewhere?). I expanded the .zip on the desktop and dragged the original JPEG file from it to the new "Dec 14, 2008" folder.
I opened iPhoto '09 again. Now the thumbnail (obviously the JPEG file) displays fine.
Double checked iMovie '09... Yep, still playing the audio in ALL the clips in the event library.
I'm not really sure why this worked the way it did. The time it took to generate the new thumbnail was ONLY for the one clip... so it seems rather odd that all the subsequent clips in the event library started to work. Perhaps I just got lucky and it is only that first clip that was throwing everything else off in the thumbnails... or maybe iMovie just looks at the first clip in the event library to determine if it is playing sound or not for all of them?
Another oddity? The original SANY0001 file is "17.2 MB". The new one, which appears to be exactly the same in quality, is "10.8 MB". The "More Info" section reveals a bit more that might be of interest. The original is Codecs: Photo - JPEG, Integer (Big Endian). The new one is Codecs: Photo - JPEG, Integer (Little Endian). Total bit rate in the original is 2,570. In the new one it is 1,605.
Ah well. It works!!! Now I can finally have some fun exploring the new features of iMovie '09

  • Major delay in audio for notifications causing no sound.

Major delay in audio for notifications causing no sound. Email text and app notification sounds are so quick thT with the new ios4 update there is now a delay in audio to the Bluetooth so I don't know when I get one. Phone ringer works fine and so does iPod and games. Anyway to fix this? I've tried resetting phone, turning device on befor phone and turning off Bluetooth and back on. Nothing seems to work to kill this delay in audio. Help!
    Ails and texted

This also happens to me. I believe that since notification audio is now pushed to any A2DP-enabled bluetooth headset, and because of the fact that notification sounds are very short, most of the time the sounds fail to transfer to the headset, since the connection initialization takes a couple of seconds, way more than the duration of the sounds themselves.
This could only be dealt with if Apple would include a submenu to each paired bluetooth device that would allow the user to set WHICH kind of audio would go through the headset.

    Hi
I want to know if there is any way I can output videos using HDMI with audio with an Imac bought in februaary 2010? I saw the Moshi cable but apparently it does not support audio for early 2010 macs. Any suggestions or info on this? What could I do?
    Thanks.

    Hi,
as far as I know there seems to be two versions of that Moshi adapter.
An earlier one without audio and a later one with audio support.
But I don't know how to distinguish one form the other. Maybe the Moshi website can offer some hints.
Since Apple lists the later one in the document plus sells it in their own Store I assume they tested it with the various Mac mentioned in that document.

  • Airplay Audio for TV Shows and Movies

I just purchased Airport Express for Airplay using my MacBook Pro, iTunes and iHome speakers. My music and radio stations on iTunes stream to the speakers with no problems. The audio for TV shows and movies on iTunes will not stream. Airplay is set for my iHome speakers and the audio only comes through on my computer speakers. I'm watching the movies/tv shows on my computer, not streaming to a TV. Any suggestions?

  • Newbe requests help with audio for slide-show on Premiere Elements 4.

I recently wrote you regarding a problem I was having with a slide show I was making on Premiere Elements 4 importing photo clips and music from PhotoShop Elements 9.  Thank you for your help.
This very large slide show, some 200 clips that I have not resized is completed.  I am now having many problems with the music audio I am adding to various sequences of the slide show.  Specifically:the audio will not stay fixed on the places where I put it and end it.  Working on the Timeline Usually the length of the audio is shorter than the ending of the photo clips where it must go.  I click on the audio and stretch it and end it at the place I designate.  However, the other end has moved also so now I am left with a gap where there is no audio at the beginning of the segment.  Now in addition, the "Delete and Close Gap" does not work most of the time causing me to manually move the photo tiles which sometimes move when this happens.  I have to move each one or two individually to the left to close the gap and many times this causes loss of one or two photo tiles or they are out of order or have increase in number (of the one I am moving).
The program has also shut down for the past 10 days causing me to lose a good deal of work and sometimes photo clips and sometimes I get many duplicates of the photo clips.  All I do is edit mostly the same two segments doing this over and over because I can't proceed to importing any more music because I can't get the first segments correct.  I have chatted with you people, Sony techs, Microsoft Techs and Canon Techs.  The Sony techs suggested the program was at fault and I used the original installation disk and repaired the program.  It has still shut down on me but not as much.
I got error messages on the photo-cap instructions page you suggessted otherwise I would show pictures of the above problems.
I tried to copy and/or cut and paste from the Timeline thinking I would start a new slide show in PhotoShop Elements 9 using the same photos in reverse.  The program would not let me copy or paste.  There is great difficulty in highlighting the photo tiles in Timeline because I have to shift click on each individual tile and there are too many tiles and it would take too long to get a whole segment copied.  Maybe you know another way to do this?
I am at a stand-still now and I am quite despondent because I have been working on this slide-show for 3 months and it was a surprise for my daughter's 25th anniversary that was last Tuesday.
I do hope you have some good suggestions that will lelt me complete this Project and get it on a disk.  I am not that technical so please be specific.
    Thanks in advance.
    Kathy

Here's the basic advice I'd give, based on my experience. Much depends, though, on your goals and the specifics of your computer system:
    1) Resize all of your photos to no larger than 1000x750 pixels in size. This is VITAL if you want the program to maintain stability as you work. Also render often (by pressing the Enter key). When the render, the red lines above the clips on your timeline will turn green and the program will run much more efficiently.
    2) Work on your large slideshow project in shorter segments. You've got over 15 minutes worth of slides. Try working on this slideshow in 5 minute segments, output each segment and then combined the finished videos.
    3) Use only WAV audio as your music and audio for your slideshow.
    4) When you add video, audio or stills to a parallel track on your timeline, hold down the Ctrl key to override the ripple function and your current clips will remain in place.
    5) Maintain your computer by using a tool like the excellent, free, one-click Advanced System Care available at http://www.iobit.com/advancedsystemcareper.html
As for Delete and Close Gap, how it performs depends on whether you've selected Clear or Delete, whether you've pressed the Backspace key or the Delete key and if there is video or audio on a parallel track. (This is all covered in my books, by the way, if you're interested.)
Without knowing the specifics of your project and your situation, it's hard to give out more specific information -- but this advice should get you a long way toward completing your project!
