508 Question

I understand that Captivate is 508 compliant with screen
readers. I know that the 508 compliant checkbox must be select in
the movie preferences, and you have to add the text to the bubbles
through: right click, properties, slide, accessibility, add text.
however, once I do that, and start the screen reader, and
play the movie, non of the bubbles are read by the screen reader.
Am I mis-understanding how to use the screen reader or am I doing
something wrong within Captivate???
Any help will be greatly appreciated!!!

Hi craftsmynedu,
I have a bit of reputation as being "testy" with those who
complain without reason. But your complaint is
not without reason! Although it's possible that a lack of
success with JAWS, etc. might be my own lack of understanding those
applications, I completely agree that Adobe needs to make certain
that things like "508 compliance" are treated separately in the
included (or on-line) Help system and/or otherwise explained in
detail in some public forum.
It
shouldn't
be the job of the Captivate developer to learn how to setup
and use these tools, without help from the Captivate development
staff or others connected to the company. Thanks for pointing out
this oversight! I'll try to help by passing your thoughts along
through channels available to the AdobeCommunityExperts program as
well . . .

  • Urgent 508 Question!

The only thing i need to do is add a title or label attribute to some of the controls.
One of the ones to begin with that i am fixing is the ADF tag af:selectBooleanRadio. When i add some text to the shortDesc field of the control, the html is produces doesn't have the title attribute.
So i tried to use the corresponding trinidad control tr:selectBooleanRadio, and add some text to the same shortDesc field for the control, and in this case it does add a title attribute in the html that it produces.
Everything else in the code works fine as well when i add the trinidad control, except for one thing. I have a ValueChangeListener that gets called when you click on another tr:selectBooleanRadio. Within that valueChangeListener event handler function, i have a bunch of code which in the end displays a af:popup. The problem i am having when using the trinidad control is that it somehow is not allowing the display of the popup even though it is going through the code that executes display of the popup. When i click on another link or button that is supposed to display a different popup as well, then the popup associated with the tr:selectBooleanRadio also displays at that time, but not originally when the value changed by selecting a different tr:selectBooleanRadio.
So, my question is, are there any other successful ways of adding a title attribute to the these controls. If its the af:selectBooleanRadio how do we make it so that the html it generates has the title attribute, or if its the tr:selectBooleanRadio, what might be happening during the event handling that it is not allowing the af:popup to display?
A quick response to this appreciated since this is very urgent! Thanks very much for your help!

    JDev version is 11.1.1.5
ok, i will go one step at a time so that it is easy to understand. So i will only mention the first thing right now and then we can try other things later.
i have a af:selectBooleanRadio. After running the page/application, when the user does View Source in the browser for the page that has the radio button, it is in the form of an HTML tag <input> of type for radio button. What i want to do is to have a "title" attribute for the <input> tag for this radio button. I can use the tr:selectRadioButton trinidad control to do that, but then i have other issues with that, and we can talk about those later.
Let me know if it is still not clear.
Thanks very much for your help!

  • 508 Compliancy Question

    Hi,
I am developing some modules in Captivate that require that
they be 508 compliant. I have been doing some research and have a
question about voiceover/captions/screen readers. From my
understanding, the text in captions needs to be added to the
Accessibility tab for each slide so that a screen reader, such as
Jaws, will read it to a viewer. In my modules, the voiceover
content is different than the text in the captions. My question
is... will the voiceover conflict with the screen reader while the
person is viewing the module? Will the viewer hear my voiceover
saying one thing and the screen reader saying another at the same
time? Does the voiceover have to match the screen caption text so
that the viewer can turn off the audio in Captivate if desired?
Thanks for your help and time,
    Michele

Ok, I think I answered my own question... from my testing
with JAWS 8.0, the user needs to press the down arrow on their
keyboard to begin the screen reader. So, after the voiceover is
read, the user can press the down arrow and the screen caption
(that was added to the Accessibility dialog box) will be read. So,
    they won't conflict.

  • Need Guidance on Section 508 Compliance (This is a "When" question - not a "How")

Hi, I've been doing a lot of research on Section 508 compliance and I am totally clear on how it is handled in Captivate.  I am just not sure when it needs to be implemented.
I have a software demo I am working on that is basically, self-running.  The user sits, watches, and listens.  There are a few times when there is some user interaction (They have to click on something to go to another section or something), and I totally get implementing the accessibility features for those elements.  What I don't get is, am I supposed to add accessibility to all of the other objects that appear on the stage during the self-running part of the demo?  For example, if a visually impaired person were listening to my demo (the entire demo is narrated) would they really want their screen reader reading off elements on the screen at the same time?
Anyone who could shed some light on the types of accessibility features that should be enabled during narrated, self-running demos would be greatly appreciated! (Closed Captioning aside)
    Thanks!
    Vicky

Basically, the only need yo're addressing is for visually impaired users here, correct? Most visually disabled learners are going to turn off the audio on a presentation because it interferes with the screen reader.
The simplest way to test if the demo is accessible is to listen to the narration or read it without the visual cues. If you find there are elements that are not expressed in the narration that are necessary to the demo, you may want to create an accessible text equivalent that describes what is happening on the screen in addition to the narration, insert it in the slide notes for your project and create directions that highlight this option for those learners.

  • Adobe Section 508 compliance check question

I've run the Adobe Section 508 compliance check on a document.  The only errors I receive now are 5 tables without designated table headers.  I click on the link to these tables, but nothing happens.  It doesn't point me to the tables with the errors.  Any help would be greatly appreciated.  I'm using Adobe Pro v9.2.0.

I work at a college and have to create complex Section 508-compliant PDFs throughout the year. Though you've probably upgraded to CS6 or higher, I thought I'd share info on an ID plug-in that is very helpful with determining and setting the reading order from within ID. It is called "FrameMaker," by Rorohiko, and it puts a tiny label on each frame of a page. For example, if I select a frame, the reading order "number" will show on the top right of the frame. So I'll know immediately that I need to fix the order before creating a pdf.
Very inexpensive. Definitely worth the money.

  • 508 Compliance Questions

    Hello RH Community Experts:
I have reviewed past 508 Compliance posts, but wanted to see if anyone else knew anything specific about the following areas.
Is there any way to create "relative" font sizes (small, medium large) in RH? Using style sheets forces a fixed size on fonts, which is not 508 Compliant for the visually impaired
How do I add "titles/descriptions" to the various frames within RH? The frames can be tabbed in between with Jaws/Screen Readers, but they lack proper descriptions.
Has anyone else had noted problems with the 508 Compliant Version of RH not being fully compliant? Any workarounds you have implemented to help achieve this?
Any and all help you can provide in this arena is appreciated!
    FTBGuy

    Hi Syncrasy,
I got your PM and will offer what advise I can here. This is
an issue that we struggle with as well.
You do indeed have to insert the accesibility text for every
slide - which inserts all of the captions and makes them available
at one time (depending on the settings of the screen reader -
should be when slide loads, though settings may require user to
    request text to play).
Your concern about timing can be overcome by breaking your
slides apart. In other words, if you need a caption to be read in
conjucntion with the timing of some other event, break that event
(and the corresponding caption) off into a separate slide. This
way, as your slides progress, the screen reader has the associated
    text at the appropriate time.
NB: 508 issues are a huge interest for me and I will continue
to work on best practices for creating Captivate training objects
that meet at least the letter of the law, and hopefully the spirit.
One way I plan to facilitate that is by creating a global Captivate
user's group. I hope to have the site for this online within the
    week at
    http://www.captivateusers.org
I hope this helps. Please feel free to respond here, or start
a new thread if you need more advice.

  • 508 Accessibility question

Processing documents with a large number of figures (graphs, charts, etc.). Would like to
insert Alt. text and have screen reader NOT read any renderable text that appears
on the figure, but read the Alt. text instead. Any thoughts on how
    to accomplish this?

Have you tried Replacement (Actual) text?
If used, keep in mind that this precludes access to any child elements of the element to which Actual Text is provided.
Also, the intent is more along the lines of providing a text replacement to something like a drop cap or a short string of text that is part of an image and non-renderable.
But, you may want to do some trials.
Provide Actual text the the Figure element.
Have tags associated with/holding content containers of the renderable text as child elements of the Figure element.
Sort of 'dirty' but may work.
Thing is, *any* renderable text in the PDF page content is going to be processed by AT.
Even "hidden text" such as font color = page background color, or text hidden by some object (say a graphics image that overlaps the text).
Also OCR output. As well, AT configuration preferences are controlled by the user.
Maybe the graphs & charts can be processed out as images and then brought into PDF? Then the Figure element would have no child element(s)
associated with containers holding renderable text.
    Be well...

  • ADA 508 Compliance Workflow Overview (tab key for navigation / WebAim Toolbar)

    Hi,
I've been assigned to update interactive training for a State agency..... with of course, an emphasis on ADA / 508 compliance.
So, before I pinpoint my two questions/scenarios, here is a basic, initial attempt at providing an overview of ADA compliance workflow in Captivate and beyond.
PS - useful Captivate forum urls are at the end of this post. I'm using Captivate v.6
    ADA Compliance Workflow Overview:
    1. All assets need an alt tag and conceivably a description > highlight the asset, like a pic, and click the Accessibility button under Properties.
    2. Create slide notes for each slide > load slide, highlight no assets and click the Accessibility tab under Properties. Copy and paste your notes > for screen readers.
    3. Need closed captioning for video/audio content > I use Camtasia for CC and will use the JW player for screen reader of video content.
    4. Interactivity needs to be accessible via the tab and enter keys.
    What else am I missing?
    Question 1
My question targets how to get the enter key to initiate after a successful tab. To be clearer.... I hit tab and I can navigate through all the buttons in the correct order, but hitting enter provides no action. I am gettining the yellow highlights around buttons when I tab through. Everything works very well when using the mouse, but blind users don't use mice.
I did create my own animation buttons in Flash and imported them in as animations. I then placed a Click Box behind the button animation to engage the rollover action. Could this be causing problems? The prebuilt (and clunky looking) buttons on the quizzes do work (ie) tabbing to them and hitting enter provides effective navigation.
I'm opting not to use the playback control skin, only my Flash nav bar.
    Question 2 (Scenario 2)
I have downloaded the WebAim Toolbar feature designed for FireFox, used to check ADA compliance issues.
I am getting this error message:
A frame does not have a title attribute or value. Okay... I bet I can fix this via the .html file or via the standard.js file??
    and these warnings:
Alert: Javascript in head - A javascript element is present in the page head section.
Alert: Flash - A Flash object is present.
Does anyone know if these alerts are worth fixing?
Obviously Captivate is going to pump out, or rather publish... javascript elements, but is this bad in the page head section?
And..... of course a Flash object is present...Captivate produces Flash / Shockwave files.
I'll obviously ask the programmers at WebAim for guidance as well. As always any help would be appreciated and Tanks in advance.

    Hi,
Attached is my zipped project file. I did create my own buttons in Flash - this might be the problem. I have only been problem solving with navigation on the first four slides.
To clarify, hitting the Enter key does engage navigation, however I’m having difficulty controlling the navigation so that it goes to the correct location.
I’m using Captivate v.6 / publishing SCORM 1.2 / Using IE to deliver via the SyberWorks LMS.
    Here is question 1:

    1.     What database types/ sources can the BI pull from?OBIEE supports many popular databases out there including flat file, xml's as sources.
    2.     Is the license portable from one server to another? No. As far as I know you have to buy the license based on number of servers you are doing the installation on.
    3.     Are pages, graphs, reports, etc. 508 compliant?OBIEE is 508 compliant application.
    4.     Is the license portable from one server to another?Refer to answer for Question # 2.
    5.     Are pages, graphs, reports, etc. 508 compliant?Refer to answer to Question # 3.
    6.     How large a dataset can the BI handle?Depends. You can do performance tuning both on BI server side as well as database to boost up the performance. Caching plays a major role here.
    7.     How easily does the BI tool integrate new data to it's database? Not sure what you are asking here.
    8.     What precautions do the BI use to back up data?OBIEE does not store any data. It only stores the metadata of the tables you are using.
    9.     Level of Effort/ Steps involved to install, upgrade, or maintain BIPretty good documentation out there and many blog posts that should help you ease you through the installation process.
    10.     Can the BI be used to create/moderate forums (wordpress or other)No. OBIEE is not a CMS.
    11.     Can user comments be routed to different mailboxes based on predefined conditions (for example, url or user actions on the page)?Yes.
    12.     Does dashboard support embedding flash?Yes.
    13.     Are cross-tab capabilities supported in business view, dashboard, and ad hoc queries?Yes.
    14.     What type of charts can be created with the BI?Many different kinds. Some of them are:
    Bar
    Line
    Area
    Pie
    Line-Bar
    Time Series Line
    Pareto
    Scatter
    Bubble
    Radar

  • Creating 508 Adobe Acrobat Accessible Docs from various sources and formats

Note: I have no 508 training, except for perusing of documents on the web.
I need to create searchable 508 Compliance report documents for Adobe Acrobat (not for the web at this time) from merged PDF files.
To create these reports, I do not have originals, all I have been given are PDFs, some of which have been created from Word and others scanned (some with OCR and some not).  Some of the reports are converted directly from Word but may also be a combination of electronic and scanned pages (signature pages, graphics, appendices, etc.)  Often the scanned pages have not been scanned to actual letter size (8.5 x. 11), but are smaller.  Sometimes they are larger or A4.
In preparing the final report, I take all of the PDFs and merge them into one document.
I add watermarks and headers/footers to the whole document.
In order to get all of the watermarks and headers/footers to align on the page with ease, I need all of the pages to be the standard letter size of 8.5 x 11 without losing any information.
The only way I can figure out how to achieve this is to take the pages (usually scanned pages) that need to be enlarged (sometimes reduced) and Print to a PDF.
This will create a new PDF of the existing PDF; making it the standard letter size of 8.5 x 11, without cropping.
I can then replace the odd-sized pages with the new PDF pages, creating a document where all of the pages are now the standard letter size of 8.5 x 11.
Once my document is all the same size, I can add my watermarks and header/footers.
I still need to make the whole document a searchable 508 Adobe Acrobat compliant document.
I believe I need to run the OCR Text Recognition to convert/capture scanned pages and pictures to make this document a searchable 508 Adobe Acrobat compliant document.
I tried running the OCR text recognition on the current merged (160 pages) PDF document (before adding my watermarks, headers/footers) to capture the scanned text, and I receive the following errors:
            This page contains renderable text.
This page has graphics other than images or text on it. It cannot be captured.
When I ran the Adobe Acrobat Accessibility checker, I get the following errors:
The first page is a scanned signature page: the error says
1 image with no alternate text
1 element(s) that are not contained within the structure tree.
    1.     Inaccessible page content
Most of the remaining detailed report errors are:
    Inaccessible page content
1 element(s) that are not contained within the structure tree.
I tested one page and used the Touch Up Reading Order tool and added alternate text to a signature block, ran the accessibility checker again, but still came back with alternate text errors.
I am open to suggestions.  Feel free to advise me from beginning to end in regards to what I’m trying to accomplish.
    THANK YOU!

You do have a boat load of work.
         This page contains renderable text.
This page has graphics other than images or text on it. It cannot be captured.
This isn't an "error". Acrobat's OCR cannot process  PDF page content that is not exclusively an image.
1 image with no alternate text
When properly tagged, an image or graphic in a PDF is identified by the PDF element "Figure"
    (<Figure>).
All Figures shall have an Alternate Text Description.
You may have images/graphics that are tagged as Figures but should be Artifacts.
OCR - The hidden layer of OCR output provided by Searchable Image or Searchable Image (Exact)
is, for practicable purposes, not something one can effectively created Tagged PDF from.
Prior to Acrobat 9 one would use Formatted Text and Graphics. With Acrobat 9 one would use
ClearScan. Alternatively, one might just re-key the content in an authoring application and output Tagged, accessible PDF.
    Watermarks & Header/Footers -
Oh boy; well, once you have everything else in a "green board" line up you'd add these and manually
"fold" them into the structure tree via proper tagging.
So, the first step is to gain at least a fundamental understanding of what an Accessible PDF is and
how to create it. Then you'd want to become familiar with Section 508 1194.22.
As each of the paragraphs are correlated to WCAG 1.0, you'll want to review it to understand what
the correlation is and how it relates to PDF.
However, Section 508 will be changing.

  • Table 508 Acessibility in InDesign?

    Hello,
we need to provide PDFs to a client that are fully 508 accessible. The one area that is always difficult are the tables - most of the tables our clients provide us with are complex (multiple header levels along the top, headers on the left, sometimes headers starting a new section in the table).
I've seen that Adobe Acrobat has a table inspector that can help with this. However, we do not design in Acrobat - we use InDesign. I've read elsewhere that Acrobat will not recognize table tagging done in InDesign (it will recognize a table tag, but not the tagging of individual cells - making them headers or data cells). Is that true?
The ideal would be for InDesign to have some kind of Table Ispector that would allow you to tag the tables in InDesign (data cells, header cells, even the "id"/"header" relationship of the cells if the tables are complex) and for Acrobat to recgonize these. Because right now, it seems you have to do all this kind of tagging in Acrobat, but if the client has a change and we need to output a new PDF, WE LOSE ALL THE WORK WE DID PREVIOUSLY IN ACROBAT.
Anyone facing the same thing that might hav found a work around?

Depends on the size of the magazine. I do a 100 page or so magazine every two months and I don't use a TOC I mark up by hand, which is easy enough to do.
Are you using CS4? Because you can use the cross references for something like this - I think, I don't have CS4 but from tuts I've seen it looks like you can.

I don't know what the answer should be for your original question without seeing the document(s) and/or your workflow

  • Is there a forum for Captivate that specifically addresses Section 508 compliance issues?

I currently use Captivate 5.5 and would like to get ahead of the 508 issues that may arise and be able to go to a forum or site that may have similar questions, and hopefully answers.

No such forum. Shoot your queries here, you might get the required help. There are couple of Section 508 specialists here.

  • Using Acrobat Pro to meet the 508 Refresh

In a burst of enthusiasm at the news that the long awaited and badly needed 508 Refresh will substantially raise the bar for high quality PDF accessibility - aligning 508 with the rigorous and comprehensive standards set by ISO 14289, PDF Universal Accessibility (PDF/UA) - I gathered together all the tips and tricks that I know of for using Acrobat Pro to achieve PDF/UA and posted them at TaggedPDF.com.  Any  feedback you provide will be greatly appreciated.

Or perhaps the real question is...
"What's different between your PDFs and Acrobats?"
I would look at the two PDFs in question and see what is different. Are your PDFs using ASCII filters, but Acrobat uses Flate? Are you wasting whitespace in your output? Are you doing full font embeds vs. subset embeds? etc....

  • ALI 6.5 | CSS folders confusion| Detailed question

    Hi All,
i am using ALI 6.5 portal env deployed on WL10.0. I am pretty much new to this ALI Portal. I am very much confused with the css folders and files residing under PT_HOME folder.
Can anyone please explain about these folders and files. Please find my questions below.
    a))
In 'PT_HOME\ptimages\tools\cssmill\css' folder i can see css files with the following naming convention.
    d_mainstyle##-**.css
    mainstyle##-**.css
    mainstyle-**.css
What is the significance of these file types.
    b))
We have css files in the following locations
    PT_HOME\ptimages\imageserver\plumtree\common\public\css
    PT_HOME\ptimages\imageserver\plumtree\portal\private\css
The first folder has copied files from CSS mill and pretty understandable. The second folder is having only one file 'mainstyle.css'. What is the significance of these CSS files and In which scenarios's styles from these files will be used.
    Thanks in advance,
    Gowtham J

    its all quite simple really...
many years ago, long before the dinosaurs, the plumtree people developed the CSSMILL tool to generate stylesheets so you could basically have different colors for different areas of your portal. (Unfortunately, they didn't use any of the "C" in CSS mill, resulting in huge onerous stylesheets) These stylesheets generated by the cssmill are supposed to be copied over to PT_HOME\ptimages\imageserver\plumtree\common\public\css after you make updates. I think in practice, many people skip this process and just edit the few stylesheets that they need directly.
Fast forward to the present day, when the BEA (formerly plumtree) people are creating adaptive layouts. They have to add the styles for the new adaptive layouts and sexy new look of the 6.5 portal into the existing stylesheet. Instead of using the CSS mill, they put the new styles in its own stylesheet, but decided to name it so it is confusingly similar sounding to the existing stylesheets. This is PT_HOME\ptimages\imageserver\plumtree\portal\private\css\mainstyle.css.
as far as your question here:
    d_mainstyle##-**.css
    mainstyle##-**.css
    mainstyle-**.css
if i understand it correctly.... the mainstyle-**.css are never actually used...they may have been used in the past, but nowadays teh only stylesheets that are used are mainstyle##-**.css. The d_ is for 508 compatability mode.
