6880 in VSS Mode and OSPF maximum paths

Hi Folks,
I have an issue observed in testing.  We have implemented a VSS solution on the 6880-X-LE.  We have two MEC L3 PO's upstream and thus two OSPF path's for our default route.  After creating an event in the lab to put the boxes in Active - Active (pulled VSL links off SW1) and then go through the process of restoring the VSS (put VSL links back in) I noticed my additional path did not restore.
From the restoration perspective, it went as follows:
Sw1 - Active SW2-standby - pull VSL links
VSL PO goes down
SW1 - Active SW2 - Active (sub second traffic impact)
SW1 - enters recovery mode SW2 - Active
VSL links back in  - VSL PO up
SW1 - reboots and comes up standby SW2 - Active
Routing table now only shows entry for PO200 and no routes can go out PO100.

Hi Reza,
I can't post the configuration. However, I can tell you that I have a TAC case open with Cisco and they agree with me that this behavior requires further investigation.  So the "PO" in question disappears seems to match when I get the error related to the a port-member not being compatible:
Jan 26 15:18:17 est: %EC-SW2_STBY-5-CANNOT_BUNDLE2: Te2/3/14 is not compatible with Te1/5/14 and will be suspended (speed of Te2/3/14 is 10G, Te1/5/14 is 1000M)
So what happens is that in PO100 you'll see only one bundled port and the other is suspended.  This causes OSPF to withdraw the PO from the routing table (hypothesis but reproducible).
In our trial production launch, I performed the same test above redundancy force-switchover and you'll see both entries in the routing-table. Once the other modules come up and I get a suspended port-member that particular PO disappears from the routing table.
If you shut/no shut that PO, the PO returns as an available path in the routing table.  In production we are not using GLC-T (as in the lab) but are using GLC-SX-MM.  The bug that puts this member into a suspended state falls under the this bug id:
CSCur17071
What I missed initially is the fact, that the routing table removes that PO from being an available path even though it still has an active port-member.
Cheers,
Rash

  • Issues with deploying 6880-X in VSS Mode

    Hi Everyone,
I wanted to query the support community to see if folks are encountering issues in deploying the 6880-X in VSS mode.  We first looked at this soluition when it was running 15.1(2) SY2 as the recommened GA code.  We ran into several issues:
    1) VSL Link Timeout - Workaround:modify LMP timer or upgrade to 15.1(2)SY4
    2) Port-member goes into suspendstate when using 1000BASE-SX - shut/no shut suspended interface
We ran into this and some other issues even with the eFSU upgrade process.  So my question is have you run into similiar difficulties in running the 6880 in VSS mode.  Did you go ahead and deploy?  If so did you deploy with 15.1(2)SY4 (new Cisco GA code) or did you live with the state you are in?
Were there ways that you mitigated these issues?
    Thanks,
    Patnaik

    Hi Reza,
Here you go.  Just so you know I resolved the suspended port-member by OIR the optic that was displayed as a 10G interface.

  • FWSM Active/Standby in VSS mode

    hello,
i do have two 6500 in VSS mode , and one FWSM module on each 6500, i want to configure these modules as Active/Standby, how do i start , should i  follow this (not in VSS mode):
    http://www.cisco.com/en/US/docs/security/fwsm/fwsm32/configuration/guide/fail_f.html
or are there other things should i do to make it work,
    thanks

    up!

  • Upgrading 6509 in VSS mode

    Hi guys,
we have two 6509 running in VSS mode and we encountered the bug described here
    https://tools.cisco.com/Support/BugToolKit/search/getBugDetails.do?method=fetchBugDetails&bugId=CSCtc41114
so basically we can't ssh into the chassis.
So we're planing on upgrading the chassis to fix it, which I couldn't practice in lab...
The current image is "sup-bootdisk:s72033-ipservicesk9_wan-mz.122-33.SXI3.bin" and we wou'd like to upgrade to s72033-ipservicesk9_wan-mz.122-33.SXI8.
I read the guidelines for upgrading here http://www.cisco.com/en/US/docs/switches/lan/catalyst6500/ios/12.2SX/configuration/guide/vss.html#wp1172503
but I noticed something I'm not familiar with :
eFSU Upgrade on an Installed Modular Image Example
This example shows how to perform an an eFSU upgrade on an installed modular image:
    Router# copy ftp://172.18.108.26/s72033-advipservicesk9_wan-vz.122-33.SXI2 sup-bootdisk:s72033-advipservicesk9_wan-vz.122-33.SXI2.bin
    Router# copy ftp://172.18.108.26/s72033-advipservicesk9_wan-vz.122-33.SXI2 slavesup-bootdisk:s72033-advipservicesk9_wan-vz.122-33.SXI2.bin
    Router# install file sup-bootdisk:s72033-advipservicesk9_wan-vz.122-33.SXI2.bin sup-bootdisk:/newsys
    Router# install file slavesup-bootdisk:s72033-advipservicesk9_wan-vz.122-33.SXI2.bin slavesup-bootdisk:/newsys
The thing is, the install command is not available on my switch :
    ecore#ins?
    % Unrecognized command
So I guess I'm not running a modular IOS.
I read a bunch of things about monolithic and modular IOS but I'm kinda lost here...
Could you tell me how can I tell the difference between a modular and a monolithic image?
And in my case, what should I do after copying the image on the sup-bootdisks?
Is there any other impact on the upgrade process?
    Thank you for your answers!!

  • Load Balancing with OSPF and maximum-paths command

    Hello,
Just a quick query really, we have a disribution layer 3 switch, in its routing table it has 3 default routes all with the same metric from the core router, this is because the core router is setup with the comamnd "default-information originate always metric 50" which obviously proagates the default route around the area and the metric never changes from 50.
So i have a routing table that looks like this:
    O*E2 0.0.0.0/0 [110/50] via 77.95.176.9, 06:44:51, GigabitEthernet4/9
                   [110/50] via 77.95.176.17, 06:44:51, Vlan903
                   [110/50] via 91.203.72.5, 06:44:51, Vlan262
Three default routes with the same metric, does this mean that the router IOS will load balance traffic over all three routes evenly?  I mean i have been reading up on it and appartemtly i dont have the command "maximum-paths 3" under my ospf process?
I have been doing some traceroutes from this switch to the internet (various sites) and all the traffic seems to be going out over the first  route in the table that next hop is 77.95.176.9
My question is how can i verify that load balancing is taking place, or if its not then i need to add this "maximum-paths 3" command to the ospf on the local switch?  I would say load balancing is not taking place but im sure i have seen traffic from one customer being routes over all 3 paths due to matching spikes on the SNMP sensors?
    Many Thanks.
    Matt

Yes, your traffic should use all three paths, as Rick notes, OSPF, on Cisco, normally defaults to using up to 4 equal cost paths.
As Rick also notes mentioning CEF, how actual traffic is forwarded across ECMP can vary.  Often, the device will keep all traffic for the same flow on the same egress port, and attributes selected for actual egress port selection might be deterministic.  I.e. it's possible same traffic flow will always be sent to the same egress port.  (This means even with ECMP, you may not see an equal load distribution.)

  • FlexVPN and OSPF issue

I have an issue with OSPF rountig on routers configured in hub and spoke topology.
An issue is on a routes which OSPF do not advertise from hub to spokes.
Subnets created on a hub router are not seen on spokes but new added subnet on spoke is seen in hub routing table.
Adding ip ospf network brodcast command on a hub virtual-template interface causes OSPF adjacency to down.
By the way, EIGRP works fine.
Has anyone encountered this issue with OSPF.

A few comments - do not "redistribute connected" not all of them - you can introduce recursive routing (i.e. introduce tunnel endpoint through the tunnel).

    Q. What are the different types of feature sets?
    A. There are three types of software licenses: LAN Base, IP Base, and IP Services. LAN Base is only supported on the Cisco Catalyst 3750-X, 3650-X, and Cisco Catalyst 2K switches.
    ● LAN Base: Enables basic Layer 2 forwarding and IPv4/IPv6 switch management.
    ● IP Base: Enables Layer 2 forwarding, IPv6 management, and basic Layer 3 routing, including Enhanced Interior Gateway Routing Protocol (EIGRP) stub and Protocol Independent Multicast (PIM) stub mode.
    ● IP Services: Includes IP Base and enables advanced IPv4/IPv6 Layer 3 routing such as EIGRP, Open Shortest Path First (OSPF), WCCP, VRF-lite, PBR, and IPv4 multicast routing.

  • CS-MANAGER: Catalyst 6500 in VSS mode not supported????

We have recently moved from CSM 3.2 to CSM 3.3.1 Service Pack 3.
We are now trying to add a Cisco Catalyst 6513 configured in VSS mode using 12.2(33)SXI5 software. When we try to add th device from network, it starts Discovering the configurations, and when it reaches the 15%, we got the message "Discovery Failed - Invalid Device: Catalyst in VSS mode is not Supported"
I´ve attached to this post the screenshot showing the error
Any idea of what can i do to manage this device on CSM??

  • How to control Color Mode and Resolution for brochure creation?

    Hello guys,
I am trying to find some settings within Pages, where I could set CMYK color mode and 300 dpi resolution for my pdf file.
I am creating brochure from scratch, using blank document, because non of brochure templates work for what I need. But I can't find any controls for color mode and resolution set up.
Is there any solution for this?

There has been a lot of discussion in the Pages forum about resolution and some on CMYK.
Much of the discussion has been incorrect.
For the colour handling there is the colour palette
The Apple Colour Palette is the user interface for colour managing vector objects created in Apple Pages such as rules and panels and for colour managing one class of vector objects not created in Apple Pages, namely typographic objects.
Imported objects maintain their colourant model and colour space, if there is one. If there is none, a colour space is assigned and the assigned colour space is saved out into the PDF, opposite e.g. Adobe Photoshop which will colour manage the object in the open editing session, but will then save out the object to disk without the assigned ICC profile if 'Colour Management: Off' is configured.
Therefore, if the imported object is data space CMYK and the colour space device CMYK, the system will assign the Generic CMYK Profile which is equivalent to ANSI CGATS TR001 colourimetry (US SWOP); if the imported object is data space RGB and the colour space is device RGB, the system will assign the Generic RGB Profile which is equivalent to sRGB colourimetry in OS X 10.5 and higher.
In general, always capture and then convert for correction in one of two data spaces with three channels, either ICC colour managed RGB or ICC CIELa*b D50. Then convert to CMYK1, CMYK2, CMYK3, CMYKn from the ICC colour space chosen for correction and archiving. This colour space should be large enough to hold any colours that the output colour spaces can hold.
The Apple ColorSync Utility has a gamut comparison dialogue which is 3D (point, press, and turn the 3D gamut comparison). Use this facility to pick an ICC colour space of reasonable size and shape for correction and conversion into final output. Don't pick sRGB as a quick look will show that it can't hold as input what ISO reference offset can hold as output for pure cyan, let alone hold what a big inkjet can hold in greens, blues, reds and yellows.
The ICC architecture lets the ICC profile for the printed output match out of gamut colours to in gamut colours using the Perceptual rendering intent, as intended in the original architecture from 1995. Adobe internally introduced an inhouse conversion for compatibility with PostScript and as default for PDF, Relative Colorimetric with Adobe Black Point Compension. Relative Colorimetric is in fact a proofing transform, without gamut mapping. Black Point Compensation is a simple linear scaling of the lightness to compensate for the fact that the shadows will be clipped in a Relative Colorimetric conversion.
The other problem is transparency, introduced in the QuickDraw Graphics Extension for Mac OS 7.5. Transparency is not supported in any version of Adobe PostScript (level 1, level 2 or level 3). Transparency is also not supported in any version of Adobe PDF prior to version 1.4 and higher. Therefore, unless the RIP Raster Image Processor is able to accept PDF 1.4 and higher, transparency has to be rendered / flattened which is done in the PDF/X-3 filter of the Apple ColorSync Utility.
The idea in the PDF/X-3 filter (for Adobe PDF 1.3) is that the everyday enduser, after placing ICC colour managed RGB or CIE La*b D50 objects, and after choosing an ICC colour space for objects created in Pages, chooses the ICC colour space for the output condition. The filter accepts both ICC profiles of type MNTR Monitor with data space RGB, ICC profiles of type PRTR Printer with data space RGB, and ICC profiles of type PRTR Printer with data sapce CMYK.
The colourant conversion (RGB to CMYK) and the gamut mapping (out of gamut colours in input colour spaces mapped to in gamut colours in output colour space) is then calculated as per the ICC profile for the output condition. An output condition is the combination of factors that affect how colour is formed: the colour lightness and colour tint of the paper, the colours of the colourants, and the tone value increase. Think of gamut mapping in a good ICC profile as Format 1 kerning in a TrueType font (where your font has state-based kerning for up to 8 glyphs simultaneously).
Below a link to a discussion of how to change the default PDF/X-3 filter the Apple ColorSync Utility. "Wegen diverser Fehler im Mac OS X empfiehlt es sich, wo immer möglich, die PDFs ohne Transparenzreduktion (also auf normalem Weg) über den Befehl Als PDF sichern zu erstellen und das Flattening der Druckerei zu überlassen," that is, pick the plain save as PDF path and leave the transparency flattening to the prepress technician.

  • IPod is stuck in recovery mode and retoring does not fix - What can?

I've installed a new computer and transfered itunes just fine but when I connected my sons iPod it stated "itunes has detected an iPod in recovery mode. You must restore this iPod before it can be used with iTunes." I've now restored it more times than I care to remember (it appears restored back to factory settings) but the same message ".... detected an iPod in recovery mode. You must restore..." persists and thus will not download music library. What else can be done?
    Dell precision 390   Windows XP

This repetitive "ipod found in recovery mode" message is most likely caused by drive letter confusion on your computer.
In that case, you'll need to try assigning your iPod a different drive letter.
Log off of any other users on your computer.
Then, put your iPod into Disk Mode and see these steps:
1 - Don't plug in your iPod yet.
2 - Go to "START -> Control Panel -> Admin Tools (if you don't see this, click on "classic view" button on the left panel) -> Computer Management."
3 - Click on the "Disk Management" button in the left panel area.
4 - Now, with "Computer Management" and Control Panel windows opened, connect your iPod to the computer.
5 - Right-click on your iPod's listing there (after a few moments when it gets recognized in this drive window), and click on "Change Drive letter and Paths". Then the "Change..." button.
Here's what it should look like:
Assign your iPod the letter "M" "N", "O" or the like (further along in the alphabet).
For more details, see this Support article:
Windows confuses iPod with network drive or hard drive and may keep iPod from mounting
    I hope that helps you.

but we found active 6509 shutdown all it's MEC interfaces , and standby 6509 remain in rommon status,so we run into a totoally out of work situation untill we reload standby box on the morning.
customer lost communication for almost 8 hours, because fail happened at middle night.
is there any mechanism like VPC auto recovery to config on VSS.
this is ridiculous , because we have one full function 6509 but lost all communication in this failure.
how can i avoid this , we config VSL and fast hello dual-active detection. but can't recovery automactilly from this fail
another question: cisco support community change it's web page i can't find my post.
         thank you!
      Tom

    HiHi
      Thank you
two 6509 VSS, has one interface each box connect a layer 3 swtichA through portchannel. I found two interface on switchA also down and nerver come on until we reload standby 6509, and ospf neighbor to this switchA was also down.
we config two tengigabit eth interface on diifferen line card as VSL, and two gigabit interface as fast hello dual-active detect interface.
found log as below from active 6509
but custmer didn't check active 6509 status and reboot standby 6509 directly to recovery.
I think active 6509 shutdown it's interface and standby 6509 remain in rommon status, two 6509 all were out of services , so everything were lost for 8 hours.
I think during standby 6509 crash( i can find crash file to to memory parity error), there is little time , active 6509 still can detect dual active through fast hello, so active 6509 shutdown it's interfaces, but unfortrunately standby 6509 reamin in rommon status, two box were out of work at same time.
if standby 6509 are totally down(or crash,or power down) ,  does actice 6509 shutdown interfaces?( I think this is not correct behavior, active 6509 should keep working?)
if active 6509 are totally down( or crash), does standby 6509 take over,
If my thoughts is correct, this is rididuculous, because  i can't avoid whole standby 6509 crash or power down.
but if standby 6509 is down, how can active 6509 know standby 6509 is down or VSL and dual-active detect interface are all down to avoid dual active.
is there any possible to find a way: if standby 6509 is down or crash , active 6509 can detect this is not a dual active, and remain working.
if VSL and dual active detect interface are all down, two 6509s can detect this dual active and active 6509 shutdown it's interface
    thank you!

  • Two wism module in vss mode

i have two switches 6509 connected by vss technology
i add two wism module ( one in each switch 6509 )
i need to know if  two wism are operate active - active in vss or active - standby ?

    Hi Mohammad,
Redundancy for the APs is achieved by configuring primary, secondary and tertiary controllers.
There is no redundancy between controllers in a way that one controller is in standby mode and keeps verifying whether another active controller is operational.
In your case, you could for example consider the following options:
    N + N redundancy:
150 APs with primary controller A and secondary controller D for example.
150 APs with primary controller C and secondary controller B for example.
This will allow an easier redundancy configuration.
    (pseudo) N + 1 redundancy:
100 APs with primary controller A; 50 of them with secondary controller C and other 50 with secondary controller D.
100 APs with primary controller B and secondary controller D.
100 APs with primary controller C; 50 of them with secondary controller A and other 50 with secondary controller B.
This is a bit trickier, but it would allow less load per controller and still a fairly robust redundancy in case one of the two Cat6k's goes down.

    Fede

  • [Forum FAQ] Troubleshoot the error "The Remote Desktop Session Host server is in Per User licensing mode and No Redirector Mode"

    Symptom
RD License server is a key component of RDS. It licenses users to access RDS servers.
After purchase the required RDS CALs, we need to activate the RDS License server and install the purchased RDS CALs. However, during the installation or after installation, we may face errors
    about RDS License.
In most cases, the following error may occur.
    Error:
The Remote Desktop Session Host server is in Per User licensing mode and No Redirector Mode, but license server "Server name" does not have any installed licenses with the following
    attributes:
    Product version: Windows Server 2012
    Licensing mode: Per User
    License type: RDS CALs
    Troubleshooting
    1. Check whether the RD License Configuration is configured properly and there are no Warnings in the Event.
    2. The License Server should be part of 'RD Server License' group in Active Directory Domain Services.
    3. Check if the Licensing Mode is correct.
    - To change the Licensing Mode we can use RD Licensing diagnose, PowerShell cmdlet and Group Policy.
    Via PowerShell cmdlet:
To change the licensing mode on RDSH/RDVH:
    $obj = get-wmiobject -namespace "Root/CIMV2/TerminalServices" Win32_TerminalServiceSetting
    $obj.ChangeMode(value)
    # Value can be 2 - per Device, 4 - Per user
    Via Group Policy
Path: Computer Configuration -> Administrative Templates -> Windows Components -> Remote Desktop Services -> Remote Desktop Session Host -> Licensing
Use the specified RD license servers = FQDN of server name
Set the Remote Desktop licensing mode =
    Per User
However, if issue persists, please provide detailed information and post the question in the
Remote Desktop Services (Terminal Services) forum.

    Hi Richard,
You need to uninstall Remote desktop session host feature. After removing it, you will default two connections which does not need to purchase RD CALs'.

  • Pulse generation on PC parallel port and its maximum frequency

Can i generate pulse pattern on any one out of 8 lines of IEEE1284 using Labview? if yes what is minimum period and duty cycle?
    Yours sincerely

I doubt you will get up to 2 MBps and whatever you get you will not have any real control about the timing. If you use VISA LabVIEW sends the data to the COMM port driver and that driver outputs it with whatever handshake speed the remote side answers. Also in order to use anything but the old unidirectional printer mode you need to have a device that is intelligent enough to startup in Nibble mode to negotiate the maximum mode it supports. Without any remote device that does the negotiation and handshaking there won't be any EPP, ECP or whatever other bidirectional mode.
In unidirectional mode you can expect a few kBps at most and again the speed will be whatever the CPU is able to hammer through the parallel port. If you want to have any control of the speed you need to program the parallel port directly on register level. However that will maxout at 1 or 2 kBps at most and you should not expect any fine grained and steady speed control at that level. Windows is not realtime and trying to control anything reliably in software that is less than several 10ths of milliseconds is simply impossible without going into kernel mode and writing the timing critical parts in a kernel driver.
Also direct access to the paralell port registers is out of question for 64 bit Windows.
