A cautionary tale; Apple tried to screw my systen!

Having upgraded to 10.6 I installed iTunes 9, silly me. It appeared to work but with that awful white background, however it quit for no apparent reason. When I tried to restart I got an error message to say that the music disc was locked and I did not have permission to access it.
However, I know from experience that this forum usually has answers to such problems, and yes others were having similar problems. So, as advised, I trashed the preferences and iTunes ran. But I had to switch the location of my music files back to the external hard disc where they are kept.
I now got an error message telling me that Time Machine did not have enough space on the 1TB hard drive even though there was 466GB of free space. It appears that TM saw my music disc as a new disc even though it was already backed up, so I excluded it fromTM and ran a back-up. I then re-included the music disc and ran back-up again, whereuponTM deleted the backed-up music files and set about re-backing up 465GB of files.
Who knows what further horrors lie in wait just around the corner?
Surely Apple must realise that any new software should be run an an established working system before being released upon their unsuspecting customers?

Apple did do extensive testing before it was released.
Actually Time Machine exactly what it was supposed to do.
The move of the music meant that they were technically new files.

  • A cautionary tale - being a long time VZW customer in good standing gets you nowhere

Here is a cautionary tale about how being a long time VZW customer in good standing counts for nothing.
My wife and I have been VZW customers for many years.  We each have upgraded phones at least two times over our initial models.  Several years ago, we added a third phone to our account: nothing fancy, just a crappy Coupe flip phone.  At the time, this third phone was a $10 add-on in the family plan, and was handed to my mother in law to use.    After my mother in law passed away, my father in law kept the phone, and we kept up the payments for it.  His health failed, and when he passed away, the phone moved to my brother in law, and we again kept up the payments on the phone ourselves.
Now in the meantime, back in 2011, my wife wanted to upgrade her phone.  Either because her prior phone wasn't up for an upgrade or due to us just not paying attention, we somehow apparently "transferred" the upgrade that available for our in-laws' definitely-not-smart flip phone to my wife's phone.  Now, since it was the upgrade of the $10 per-month flip phone we used to upgrade the Droid, it was the contract of the $10-per-month flip phone that got renewed into another 2-year cycle - not the Droid.
Also in the meantime, I upgraded my Samsung Rogue to a Galaxy S3.  At the same time, I modified our plan to the Share Everything plan.  Because of the nature of this plan, the 3rd phone, the crappy Coupe flip phone, that used to be $10 per month increased to $30 per month.  When I signed my own new contract, I specifically asked at the VZW store whether it would be simple to drop the Coupe from the plan, because I was not sure how much longer our brother in law would need it.  They said sure, it would not be a problem.  Drop it whenever you need to, and your bill will go down $30 per month!
Now we come to the end of 2012 when my brother in law does not need this phone anymore, and in fact returned it to us.  It is sitting here collecting dust.  I called VZW today to remove it from our account.  Can you see where this is going?  Because we triggered the new contract for this phone by upgrading my wife's OTHER phone back in 2011, the Coupe is still under contract.  So our choice is apparently keep paying $30 per month until June for a phone that used to only cost $10 per month and that no one is using, or pay a $150 termination fee.
I understand how this works contractually.  But the big picture is that we have been good customers for many years, have been paying for 3 phones on our account for several of those years, and one of those phones is no longer being used (the usage is literally 0).  But can we drop that phone from our contract now that we have been paying on it for multiple years?  Nooooo.  I was misled by VZW agents when I upgraded our plan to one that increased the cost of this phone from $10 per month to $30 per month that removing it would not be a problem.   A cheap flip-phone phone, which is probably physically worth $5 in hardware, if that, and which itself has never been upgraded since it was purchased several years ago, cannot be removed from our account. When it's all said and done we will end up paying vastly more than the phone and its usage is actually worth because VZW "got us" with the contract shenanigans. Congratulations, Verizon Wireless, well played.
Ironically, the Droid - which gets lots of usage - is beyond its upgrade date and is no longer under contract.  So I guess we could drop that phone with no problem.  But we don't want to, we want to drop the cheap phone that no one uses.  And we can't.  As I said to the agent on the phone today who was not interested in helping a long time customer solve a problem, this is exactly why people hate cell phone companies.

I'm not *too* worried about VZW's feelings since they in effect have changed up the original contract when they forced my monthly fee for the phone to go from $10 per month to $30 per month because I upgraded a totally different phone that required a whole new calling plan, as the older plan had conveniently been phased out.  (Interesting how action on one phone has an effect on totally different phones that are on a totally different contract.)  Anyway, this isn't us trying to bilk VZW out of legitimate income.  It's trying to do what makes sense.
Perhaps I muddied the water with all the history of the third phone.  The distilled version is this: We have 3 phones on our account, two smart phones and one ancient flip phone.  Only two of the three are still under contract, so there is one we are free to drop at any time.  And we would indeed like to drop one phone from the account.  It would be in VZWs best interest to have the phone we drop be the one they make the least amount of money from.  That would be the flip phone.  It is in our best interest to drop the phone that is no longer in use.  That is the flip phone.  Seems like a win-win situation to me!
But because of the the way contracts are structured,  if we are to drop a phone, it needs to be the Droid, because that's the one now beyond the contract period.  So we would drop the phone that VZW makes more money from, and that we still use.  This is in the best interest of neither of us.
Yes, I'm trying to terminate early the contract we have on the flip phone.  But on the other hand, we are willing to continue making monthly payments on a more expensive phone that is NOT under contract anymore.  It seems like there's an easy fix: let us drop the flip phone, and heck, go ahead and put the Droid back onto contract for what would have been the duration of the flip phone contract. The inflexibility and inability to do something like this is what's irritating.
Contracts are great until there is a reason for both parties to make a change that is beneficial to everyone involved.  I think that's what we have here.  Contracts can be updated.  Ask any professional athlete

To change your iCloud ID, go to Settings>iCloud, tap Delete Account, then sign back in with the new ID.  This deletes the account and your iCloud data from your device, but not from iCloud.  Provided you are signing back into the same account, your iCloud data will reappear on your device when you sign back in.
To avoid losing photo stream photos, save them to your camera roll (if not already there) before deleting the account.  To do this, open your my photo stream album, tap Edit, tap the photos, tap Share, then tap Save to Camera Roll.

  • Are apple trying to resolve battery life issue ?

    Hi,
Since updating my iPhone 4 to iOS 5.1 my battery life has significantly decreased.
Like myself several other users are having the same problem with terrible battery life.
I am just wondering are apple trying to resolve this issue and if so by doing what ??

There is no way to knw what Apple is trying or what they are doing, unless they announce -which is very rare.
Most have no issue.  They released 5.1 to help resolve ths issue.  Try doing a forum search to see if you can get some help extending your iphones battery life.

Sounds like you bought the iPad secondhand and the previous owner did not remove it from his/her iCloud account.
If you are unable to contact the original owner, the iPad is (unfortunately) useless to you.

  • A cautionary tale- hopefully sky will be better!

Our phone line was faulty over 2 months ago, and after doing all the checks advised, we got an engineer out. We were told it would be unlikely we would be charged, but could be. I watched the engineer fix the central white box. So over 2months later on Wednesday I got a shock when I opened my bill thro email and the £129.99 is coming out of my account on Monday. The engineers report says that he worked on internal wiring, I thought that the central white box was not part of this, so I wouldn't be charged. Alas, I was wrong. I have been chastised for complaining at all-could of checked my bill online 3 days earlier and had more warning, should of known that I could be charged up to 6 months after engineer visit - who new!!! Certainly not me!!!!! Have spoken to 3 different departments and all 3 staff have been so busy telling me why I have no right to be upset a few weeks before Xmas that an extra £129.99 is coming out my account, that no one once said sorry that I am unhappy. I am so glad that I have funds to cover it. But a cautionary tale and has made me get my finger out and change to Sky which is £11 a month cheaper for me and the same broadband speed. So farewell to BT, I will not miss you.

I realise your moving to Sky but I am a bit puzzled by your comment-----quote="after doing all the checks advised". I take it you were told to remove the front cover of the master socket and plug a phone in there .If so what was the outcome of that? Because that would eliminate all the internal wiring and extensions. So if the engineer found a fault in the XTN wiring and you were charged[quite rightly] as that wiring belong to you. Why werent you told that the line was okay to the master socket ?? If you had been told that the you would have realised that the fault was in the internal wiring and you would NOT be surprised to be charged for fixing it.STRANGE??

  • Apple's Syncing Screw up

HOW CAN I GET AROUND THIS OBVIOUS APPLE SCREW UP. None of my downloaded apps are functional now for the second time after syncing. it is only after syncing that this seems to happen and this is the second time. the last time I had to individually delete each app from the device and then RE-download each friggin' one. I REALLY dont wanna have to do this again. How do I get around this!?!?!?!?!? I have tried the soft reset and turning the phone off and on again. also i have been very aware of my service status. Nothing matters or makes any difference in the degree of failure of every app I have downloaded. All the things that came on the phone are fine. If there is no way around this then PLEASE Apple Reps FIX THIS BUG! In short: The syncing of my iPhone renders all apps obtained from the App store inoperable.

Be VERY careful when syncing the phone for the first time when it comes to the back up which you select. Problem still not resolved for me and may require a new device.

  • Have apple tried to make the syncing of 2 iphone on 1 imac as difficult as possible? My nokia is a doddle. I cant back up my wifes 3gs without entourage. I iponed up a seperte log in on my imace and it still says my wifes is prev synced with another itunr

By the looks of it I'm having the same problem as lots of people. Apple seem to have made the system of syncing and backing  up 2 iphones as difficult as possible. I have just bought an iphone4 and synced it to my imac. I now have my wife's apps and content. Now when it try to back up my wife's phone using a seperate log in on my imac and a new itunes install I'm asked " do you want to sync and erase all of the details on my wifes phone or do I want to erase and sync and loose all her data. No option not to!!!!   I thought it was maybe the inset of dementure but lots of people are having the same problem. How hard can it be to back up one phone at a time and only that phone?  Backing up my Nokia was a doddle!   I thought Apple were well know for. making things easy?  I have also tried backing up my wife's to a seperate itunes but you cant export her contacts etc unless I have office and entourage which I don't. I cant back up her phone as it is with all it content and apps and start from scratch as I get only the sync and erase and destroy option.  AAAGGGHHH

    1) authorize iTunes on your wife's user account for her iTunes store account(s)
    2) connect the device and right-click or control-click it in the iTunes Source list, then choose transfer purchases from the shortcut menu that appears.
    3) sync the device
iTunes will wipe the iPhone but, since you transferred her purchases in the previous step, your content will be in her library and you can re-populate the iPhone with it.

  • White MacBook dead or dying. Apple Store store screwing me.

I have had an unfortunate event. Two days ago my white MacBook has started to misbehave. I have turned it on, and it powered itself off after a minute. It probably did that about 4-5 times. Eventually, it booted and stayed on for the rest of the day. This has happened with a fully charged battery and plugged-in. Since it has worked for the rest of the day, I did not think more of it. Weird boots have happened before rarely.
Yesterday, it booted fine, but the keyboard was misbehaving. The option key was stuck in the ON postion without being physically pressed. Some letters worked, others created the option+letter key combination.
So, I have taken it to the Apple Store. I have a got a call an hour later saying that he removed the top case and found a small stain in the bottom-right side of the keyboard, which according to him is evidence of liquid damage. The warranty has been voided. The warranty was actually going to expire today on the 14th.
I find this highly suspicious. I have taken great care of it. Besides a scratch or paint transfer on the bottom case next to the exhaust, which I have no idea how it happened, and yellowing of the touchpad, it looks like new. I have read that the MacBooks turn yellow, mine has in less than a month of use. Maybe, due to heat, it has turned yellow or brown inside.
It's pssible they saw that my warranty was going to expire today and thought to screw me. If it's going to expire in one day, why help him?
They want $230. $130 for the top case. $100 for work. I told him to disassemble it further due to the weird boots. I have not yet received a call back if he has found more damage.
I've seen laptops taking a bath. You could float Noah's ark on them. They have major flooding stains from coke, smoothies, and other beverages. I don't drink that suff, nor have I on the day in question, nor did anyone else use it.
It's my only machine. My only means of communication with the planet is my iPhone. Suggestions?
    Thank you.

So, I thought that I should give an update. After the initial quote for $230 ($130 for the top case and $100 for work) to fix it due to liquid damage, I decided to wait a few days before going back to the Apple Store to research the issue. After a few days, I went to the store. The tech who quoted me the price was not there. When I asked when he will be there, I was told that they can't give out his schedule. One of the Genius Bar employees gave me a new price: $750. A new white MacBook is $900 with the education discount.
When I heard that price, I told him to keep it. I decided to call Apple customer support. I spoke to a few people until I have eventually been redirected to someone called Jen. I explained to her that the Apple Store won't give me a straight answer nor have they proven to me that liquid damage has occurred. She wrote some notes down and said that she will email me a case number. She also said that I should take it back, try to have another tech look at it by speaking to a manager, try to take it to another store, or ship it to a depot. That email never came. She lied to me.
I decided against talking to a manager. There was another person there with an iPod. They told him that they haven't found anything wrong with it, but if he wants to buy a new one and trade the old one, he'll get a 10% discount. He was very disappointed and expected that answer.
Clearly, I think that due to the ***** economy, they are pressured to sell to keep the store afloat and deny warranty claims. I decided against speaking to the manager. He would be the one pressuring them.
I took the laptop back. It was dirty and had a few new scratches. I bought a top case from eBay. It's a factory second grade B, AKA scratched to ****, and some of the metal inside was bended, but I straighten it as much as I could. My old one hand an yellow touchpad, but no scratches. I found a YouTube video on how to disassemble and remove the top case. It's 19 screws and it takes about 5-10 minutes. For that work they were going to charge $100. Since they do this all the time, it probably takes them 10 minutes to disassembly, replace, reassemble. They charge more than a lawyer. What a ripoff!
Once I removed the top case, I was in for a shock. There was NO stain. Also, none of the Liquid Submersion Indicators (LSI) were triggered. Those LSIs are sensitive. They turn pink to red from humidity. Actual liquid does not have to touch them. They were all white. One might think that he was nice enough to clean up liquid residue if that was the case. I very much doubt that. The laptop had dust and hairs in it. If the tech had taken the time to clean up a stain, he would have spent 10 seconds with an air can to blow the dust and hairs away. This leads me to believe that he may not have disassembled the MacBook in the first place. He may have assumed that there was liquid damage on the right side since parts of the keyboard stopped working.
After installing the new top case, everything works. There are no issues whatsoever. I'm going to write an email to Steve Jobs because I've been cheated.

  • Apple tried to help w/iPad crashes, but it's starting all over again.

I have done multiple resets, wipes, virtually everything suggested for the Safari crashes on this forum. No joy. Getting to a genius bar is physically difficult for me, so I finally contacted Apple via email and to their credit, they called me in less than 24 hours. After sharing my own rants with the first person I spoke with about the problems with ios 5, I was transferred to tech support. The tech person walked me through what I had experienced so far, and his first response was that we needed to determine if I was having a hardware or a software problem. He suggested that there might be a problem with the the original upgrade download file, so he walked me through deleting the "ipsw" file from the Library on my MacBook Pro. I did a complete wipe of my iPad 1, created a new iTunes library on my MacBook, re-downloaded the 5.0.1 update file and set up my iPad as a new iPad. I then tried things out with only the native apps installed, and used Safari for a couple of hours and everything seemed fine. I re-downloaded apps directly from the App store - I did not copy any apps from the old iTunes folder, just in case there were corrupted apps. This all happened almost 2 weeks ago and for awhile everything seemed fine. Then the crashes started up again, and have been accelerating in frequency over the past 3 days. This morning I've had two Safari crashes in one hour with nothing running in the task bar and only two tabs open in Safari. Other crashes have occurred when using the App store, email, and other functions, so it's not just Safari that's crashing. The main point that came out of all this is that IT'S NOT MY IPAD THAT'S THE PROBLEM, which tech support agreed with. I hope this info helps someone else at least determine if their iPad is functioning properly. I did finally turn on the Debug console in Safari and found out that Facebook plugins to different websites create many Safari errors. If anyone else has had experience with replacing the "ipsw" file and then doing a clean restore of their iPad, I'd like know how it worked/did not work for you.

I agree completely. I posted my experience in hopes of saving someone else a trip to the genius bar, and also to see if others had tried or been told to try this. I've read a lot of posts about wiping and restoring but no discussion about the original ipsw file download (sorry if I missed it elsewhere). It was clear from my discussions with Customer Service and Tech Support that Apple DOES read these discussions, so that was another factor in my posting. I did call the tech guy and leave him a message as to the latest developments -as per his request - but haven't heard back from him yet. During our original conversation he stated that he hasn't had any crashes on his iPad - good for him, but what does that mean for the rest of us? I pointed out to both reps that I've never seen it take so long to get a serious bug fix out of Apple.....all the stuff others are saying, with no really reassuring response from them that a fix is imminent. I hope each and every person experiencing this calls and calls Apple until something finally happens! The guys I dealt with were very nice, but I still have the same problems!! AND, I'm curious as to why things work o.k. for awhile after the restores, but then the crashes suddenly accelerate - this is my 4th try with the same results.

  • Apple trying to fill up my Windows hard disk

Why do Apple insist on installing hundreds of sub-folders on my system for BOTH iTunes & Quicktime - they all look like "da.lproj" and I think have something to do with language resources for multiple country support.
When the installer is run, you are asked to specify a language/country - so why don't they JUST install the files for that language; instead of blindly installing the whole ruddy lot?
Not only files & folders installed un-neccessarily but the registry is cluttered up with a reference to every single folder in several places.
Anyone would think they are trying to sabotage our WIndows machines to try and "persuade" us that the "Mac" way is better.
    Nigel

Just sloppy programming. I wish it was just confined to apple. I've often thought that apple get away with a lot more than the likes of Miscrosnot as apple users are "creative" and hence do not know, care or understand what lies beneath.

  • Can not open DMG file ... a Cautionary Tale

Recently obtained a CD with a new OS X app.  I double-clicked on it, but nothing happened.  So I double-clicked on it again.  This time I got an error message saying: "Can not open a Windows program." Tried double clicking on it again.  Same message. I was non-plused! Tried several more times.
Before putting a call into Apple Care, I started closing the windows on the screen.  When I closed what I thought was the last window, 1 Dialog Box appeared that had been behind all the other windows.  It stated: "Please enter your Serial Number".
    Two obvious questions:
    1. Why was the dialog box for a current activity, hidden behind all other windows?
    2. Why, when I tried to execute it again, did the dialog box not come to the front?
Perhaps I am the only 27" iMac user with many windows open at a given time?   Don't know ... but please be cautioned.
    Chuck

I have many programs open all the time, Safarie, Finder. Mail, etc., and use 8 different Desktops. If this were the problem, it would have occurred long ago.  The program I was trying to install was from Adobe: Photoshop Lightroom.

You are right.  I shall contact Adobe and, at least, make them aware of this.

  • Saved by TM -- and a cautionary tale

I synchronize my files between multiple computers using sugarsync. I just got to realize this can be dangerous. Something got screwed up on one computer (yes, a vista computer, not a mac!), and through some sequence of events, sugarsync interpreted this so that all files in my document folder had been deleted. It went ahead and deleted first all files online, and then all the files on my document folder on my Mac! This is the danger of online syncing (and I think this is not unique to sugarsync). If something goes wrong and the syncing program interprets this as file delete, it will delete the files everywhere. I thought the syncing gave me an extra layer of defense against data loss, but it actually resulted in the worse case of data loss I every experienced. Those files represent 10 years of work.
Fortunately, I had a TM backup, and I was able to restore everything from there. But not without issues. First, I tried to restore the whole document folder, and it told me I have insufficient privileges. Then I tried to 'select all' in the document folder, but again it came out with insufficient privileges. I had to select each subfolder separately and restore, and it seems that all has been restored. But this 'insufficient privileges' message is quit imprecise (what item?), and makes me a little worried not all has been restored.

My Verizon router is not a router. Bridge only. No WAN ports used on my Actiontec. Who needs support? The only reason I would call is if my service stopped working, or slowed down to a problem. I am not most people. My router is a Linux box with a single core CPU, 512meg of RAM, 80 gig drive, and two network cards. Logs everything for 90 days.

  • Apple has really screwed the pooch on iTunes 7.

    I am venting, ok.
After spending probably 10 hours rebuilding my tunes library (fortunately I saved it on other disks), I now cannot get the iPod to load the files, and it locks up the PC when it tries.
I just don't know where to go now. I think something like a class action, which I have always been opposed to, may be in order. This is really inexcusable!
    J-

I agree. Really bad software. I haven't used my iPod in more than a week because, oh yeah, iTunes 7 wiped it out and turned it into a $200 paperweight. I certainly won't be buying anything from Apple anytime soon.
