A great big thank you!

Hey everyone,
I just received the 50th order of the Arch Linux Handbook, a print version of the Beginner's Guide in the wiki.  That's 50 copies in less than a month! I was hoping to sell 20 copies in six months, so I am shocked at the purchases and wanted to give everyone a great big thank you for supporting Arch. You all are truly the best community any distro could ask for.
Dusty

I'll be placing my order for a copy next month Dusty.
I would have placed it this month but there are a few schwag items I just can't live without first !
I do think a copy of the book should be a requirement for any true Archer.

    OR use this method
    1. Press-hold the Home button (big circle below the screen)and the Sleep/Wake button (on top of the iPhone) simultaneously.
    2. Continue holding both buttons (Ignore the"Slide to power off") until the iPhone shuts off and begins to restart.
3.You may let go when you see the silver Applelogo.

  • A big THANK YOU to B. NOIR! because...

I just experienced my first "iTunes has encountered an error and needs to close" warning!, when I booted up my machine this morning and tried to launch iTunes. I tried and tried to coax iTunes to open but I wasn't successful! Next, I decided to back up my iTunes library--it' been about two weeks since I last did this and I've purchased a number of new tunes in the meantime, plus I endured the iTunes Plus upgrade in the interim. All of this was worth trying to save!
Then, I tried a few times to launch iTunes, but dang it--iTunes refused to open. Thanks to reading the many helpful posts by b. noir I knew right away Quick Time was probably the culprit. Sure enough--I tried to open Quicktime independently and it caused an error.
I solved my problem by opening my Add/Remove Programs folder and "changing" (i.e. repairing) Quicktime. (I first tried to do this with my Norton program active and the fixes failed! The next time I tried, I turned off my virus protection and my firewall, then things seemed to work correctly.)
However, please know that I did have to reboot my computer before the corrections took effect!
Now, all is well and iTunes works fine again!
Anyway, this is a big shoutout to b. noir for helping me find the solution from all of his forum posts. I didn't even have to ask a question in the forums, I already knew what the answer would be! And, it was the correct answer!
Thank you "b. noir" and all of the other helpful volunteers on this site! I would not have known how to solve this problem so quickly otherwise. In fact, I'm sure I would have spent the bulk of this day trying to get iTunes to open.
    --Samdogmom

I'm sorry to hear you are having the same problem. Here's one of b. noir's posts about how to fix it:
Re: "iTunes has encountered an error and has to close"
Posted: Jan 23, 2006 8:06 AM in response to: MAJR
    well done MAJR!
just a note on the error message "itunes has encountered a problem and needs to close".
there are actually at least three different contexts in which people get this message, and the treatments will differ depending on the context. here's some info on the three most common contexts.
"itunes has encountered a problem ..." when LAUNCHING ITUNES
this is the most common time to see the message. in my experience, 90% of the time this is caused by a broken QuickTime 7.0.x. So the first thing people should check for is whether their Quicktime will launch, or whether it gives them an error message when they try to launch it.
if you get an error message when you try to launch Quicktime, the standard treatment is to swap out your QuickTime. there's actually an Apple KB doc on the problem, although the silly sausages have given the error message incorrectly in the doc (as of the 23 December 2005 revision), which makes it more difficult to find the message when you're searching for it:
iTunes 6 for Windows unexpectedly quits when opened
... that method is pretty servicable in the majority of cases, but it leaves you open to a known complication of a broken Quicktime where people can't uninstall their QT and get an error message citing their QuickTime "uninstall.log". so i usually suggest to people that they try a careful standalone QT 7.0.4 reinstall instead (which gets past the "uninstall.log" error):
download and save a copy of the QT 7.0.4 installer to your hard drive. (run the install from there rather than online.) switch off all antivirus and antispyware applications prior to the install.
    Quicktime 7.0.4 Standalone Installer
known complications of QuickTime reinstalls: the most common (for QT versions 7.0.2 and 7.0.3 and iTunes versions 5.0.0.35 through 6.0.1.3, at least) is an error message citing "Error 0x80040707". in this context (again, the treatments for this error message are context dependent too), the most common cause of the Error 0x80040707 is a snarlup in the QT installation registry entries.
what typically fixes it is the Windows Installer CleanUp utility:
Description of the Windows Installer CleanUp Utility
use the utility to clear the existing Quicktime entries. then try the careful standalone QT 7.0.4 reinstall again.
other known causes of "itunes has encountered a problem ..." on launch: probably the most common of the rarer causes (if you'll pardon the oxymoron) is a rare weird problem to do with the registry and user accounts on XP machines.
to check for that, first head into your "User Accounts" control panel and create a new user account with full administrative privileges. (there's help documentation on how to do that at the left of the control panel screen.) while you're in that control panel, switch off "Fast User Switching" in your logging-on preferences.
now, log out of the old account and log into the new account. can you get itunes to launch inside the new account?
if itunes does launch inside the new account, then try an experiment (this rules out an ultra-rare "false positive diagnosis" of the registry/user-account thing). use the following technique to share the music from your old account to the new account:
iTunes: How to share music between different accounts on a single computer
if itunes still launches from the new account once you've shared the music from the old account to the new account, then you've got the registry/user-account thing.
fixing the old account might be tricky. we've had mixed success with combinations of complete uninstalls of itunes using the following technique:
Da Gopha: Stepwise clean uninstallation of iTunes
... followed by application of a Registry repair program such as RegCleaner or Registry Fix. failing that, it might be worth just "moving house" to the new account.
(there are other even rarer causes of this message on launch ... if you believe you've got one of those, best to start your own thread and explicitly explain as best as you can what the behavior is and what steps you've already taken to try to resolve the issue.
"itunes has encountered a problem ..." when IMPORTING A CD
in iTunes versions 4.9 through 6.0.1.3 this was most commonly caused by a hyperthreading problem on PCs with dual cores and dual processors. on those versions of iTunes, the workaround was to set the itunes affinity to a single core/processor. (Otto42 is our authority on that topic.) but the bug has been fixed in iTunes 6.0.2:
iTunes for Windows quits unexpectedly importing CDs on a dual-processor or dual-core computer
"itunes has encountered a problem ..." when PLUGGING IN AN IPOD
the most mysterious of the three main classes. there doesn't seem to be a common cause of this one (or at least it hasn't been clearly identified yet).
probably the first things to check up on are:
iTunes for Windows may unexpectedly quit when syncing folders of pictures with iPod
... but if no joy there, this is probably the best next port of call:
Troubleshooting an unexpected quit or restart of Windows, iTunes, or QuickTime

If this doesn't help you, try to search the forums for other helpful advice--check out the Quicktime forums too. Otherwise, try to ask b. noir directly for help. He's very responsive!

    Hi,
AcidSearch is causing the problems for you (and would most likely have been the cause of the problems with Safari 3 as well):
    0x20eb000 - 0x20edfff net.culater.SIMBL 0.8.2 (8) /Library/InputManagers/SIMBL/SIMBL.bundle/Contents/MacOS/SIMBL
    0x2528000 - 0x255cfff com.pozytron.AcidSearch ??? (0.7b4) /Library/Application Support/SIMBL/Plugins/AcidSearch.bundle/Contents/MacOS/AcidSearch
Delete the 2 folders highlighted above and then retry Safari.
    Hope that helps.

  • A Big Thank You too Apple, and Advance Electronics.

This is a thank you first to Apple, for designing such a great laptop, and secondly to the tech's at my local Apple Tech Shop, Advance Electronics, especially Scott.
About a week ago, an Apple Laptop users worst nightmare happened to me.
And it was my own fault.
I split a FULL cup of three cream, three sugar coffee on the top of my MacBook Pro. I won't go into how; I know I am a GIANT IDIOT for ever allowing this to happen, and I literally felt physically ill after doing this.
So, I spill this Extra Large cup of Tim Horton's finest directly on the keyboard of my MBP. The screen automatically goes blank. It has powered down. I leap into action.
I flip the MBP upside down, allowing most of the liquid to drain, while yanking the Magsafe (did I mention I love this connector?) and popping the battery.
Keeping the MBP upside down, I look for a tool small enough to open the RAM door; no luck.
I call the local tech shop. They have no Mac Techs there on the weekend, but they do have some other talented techs. I have no choice, I need immediate action or my poor MBP is doomed.
I bring it to the Tech shop. They make no promises, warn me that by having a non-Apple Certified tech work on it, my warranty is void; I am not deterred; spilling coffee on it has already voided the warranty, and I have nothing to lose at this point.
One week later I have my MBP back. They had to replace the keyboard (can you imagine trying to clean that sucker out?) and the topcase. That's it. everything else is in working order.
No doubt my own fast action had something to do with this, but without the design and build quality from Apple, and the skill of the first tech to work on my MBP, Scott, I would have a very expensive hunk of scrap right now, instead of my beloved MBP.
    Thanks Scott and Apple.

  • Big Thank You

I just wanted to say without this forum I would not have a working computer. I have worked in the computer field for 7 years and built countless systems. Imagine my surprise when I recently built a system based on a Prescott and learned that building a PC is not as straightforward as I though. I had three seperate issues that you guys helped me with, and I can confirm some issues with the prescott. My PC is built on the 880 Neo
1st issue-PC would not boot, so after browsing the forums I found that my power supply was way inadequate (250 watt CompUSA power suppy). After reading about PSU I went to a Antec true power 430, no worries. At least now my PC would boot to hang after Post
2nd issue-Would not boot off of floppy or CD. Prescott CPU would not allow me to boot, so I took machine to work and swapped out a P4 Northwood and flashed Bios to 1.4. After flash I was finally able to install OS
3rd issue- After looking on here I learned to get rid of CoreCenter and get speedfan. At that point I learned my PC was going to like 52-55 C at idle. I then applied another layer of Artic Paste, and then just to be sure I added a case fan. Now my machine idles ate 44 C and maxes to 61 C under load.
Thanks to you guys I got all of my issues sorted out and machine is working, and I must say I am very satisfied with my prescott. Thank you for all of you help, and for those that have problems it is possible to get answers here without even posting a question, just use the search function.
And I can confirm that 1.4 Bios or better is needed to run a Prescott. Here are my specs. very powerful machine
    Antec case
    Antec Tru Power 430 PSU
    2.8 GHZ Prescott
    880 Neo MB
280 GB Seagate HD space (80 Gig, 200 Gig)
    1 GB Kingston memory

    Hi,
As Danny said........ And thank you taking time to reply/post here.
OK upgrade BIOS too 1.7......... You will not be disappointed.......better POST and faster USB hardware detect times.....
Oh and write down BIOS settings before you update......then you can just set again as in 1.4 bios......

  • Thank You, App #1 Complete

This is a big THANK YOU to Ray Newbie, etresoft, K T, Q Lazarus, Tech Guru and the others who have been so helpful in this forum, and others who asked the same questions I have had, and gotten answers found in these forums.
In a little less than two months, from inception to completion, and just over one month for this particular project, I received answers to using Arrays, using NSNotifications, UIWebViews and delegates, help with tracking down "EXCBADACCESS”, sound file formats, PNG conversions, UIView/device orientation, character set selectors, and advice on button symbols. I also spent a few days working with Photoshop and AudioShop/SoundMachine and ResEdit on my older systems. (Actually the guts of the app took less than a week to code. All the rest was setting up the UI and doing battle with delegates and more UI.)
My first app is finished and working. It uses a Utility template, with 2 extra views off the flipside view controller, a data picker, and a web view. The game plays, now has 92 levels/scenes, uses the settings bundle, includes unlimited undo capability. Scores, state and the scene library are all stored in the Documents directory with initial blank copies or templates in the app bundle. It also saves its state and restores to where the player left off upon restart.
This includes the current state of the pieces, and the entire undo chain. It plays sounds when pieces are moved, and animates transitions via modal view controller methods. The info button fades in and out, currently every 10 seconds, but touches on the game board reset the timer to stay hidden. A touch in the status area causes the info button to immediately fade in. It uses touches and swipes (or flicks) for moving the pieces.
On October 1st, I submitted my request for the $99 developer's program so I can get a certificate to sign my code and do testing on-device instead of just the simulator. I was expecting it to take a day or two more to finish. Now, it's time to polish the instructions and verify that I didn't break anything in drawing the scenes, or creating the persistence code. Then, I'm ready to submit it to the App Store.
Thank You so much for your help. I'm sure I wouldn't have made as much progress without your help, nor as quickly. Of course, I've also been learning the ins and outs of Objective-C, since I don't count the 4 or 5 example programs I wrote 3 or 4 years ago while starting in on the Hilgress Cocoa book.
I'll gladly accept any advice on marketing for a puzzle-style game.
I'd also like to know what anyone has done as far as beta testers, since either physical access to a device or downloads from the App Store seem to be the only release channels, and I'd like to have someone other than myself test it out before I put it in the App Store.
    Thanks!
    -Carl

    Thanks everyone.
I've noted the leads you've included. Some pretty good stuff.
The MeetUp group in SF sounds interesting, I'll have to check it out.
I'm also open to distributing a packaged binary, or making one available.
Probably safer to know what's been sent out, and send it via eMail rather than
providing a link to a server based download. App in simulator is 6.5MB, and it
compresses to 1.4MB in zip form. I'll add a link to a web contact page so no
email addresses need to be posted anywhere for anyone interested.
Now that all the hard work is done, I want to release the same app as a Dashboard
Widget, and for Mac OSX, although the market there is nowhere as large as the
    iPhone and iPod market.
Feel free to add additional links or comments. It's great to have you guys and girls
out there for support. As a one-person operation it can get pretty tawdry figuring
out what to look for in the docs. Many days of "I know there has to be a way to do this!"
I'm happy and willing to learn what else is out there.

  • Not a problem, not a question, just a thank you!

I have been using Captivate for a couple of years now, and taught myself rather than receiving any training.
I have posted a few time with queries and always received courteous helpful answers very quickly, but frequently find what I need to know in other posts.
I would just to say a big thank you to you all on the Forum for the help and advice you give.  It is very much appreciated.

I'd like to echo those comments: this is a great resource that makes a key difference to Cp's effectiveness.
Thank you to all those who contribute.

Any Help or Direction would be Greatly Appreciated ,,, Thank You,,, Brian  : )

If the memory is low, double click the home button to bring up the multitask bar, tap on one of the apps shown until they start to shake, then hit the little red minus to close them. After all apps are closed that way, press the home button again and see if it works now.
Maybe you'll reset the device as well by pressing the home and sleep button for about 10sec, until the Apple logo comes back again. You will not lose data doing this, but it can clear some glitches as well.
