A horrible Norton mistake

I run my Titanium G4 Powerbook in 9.2.2 sometimes and in OS X 10.3.9 sometimes. Probably about equal time in both. My hard drive has been horribly fragmented and slow. I hadn't run any defragmentation software because, allegedly, OS X defragments the hard drive routinely. Apparently that is not true, since my drive was ridiculously fragmented to the point that the computer was slowing way down. It's a 27-gig hard drive and there are over 6 gigs free, so it's not that I didn't have enough space for defragmentation to occur.
Anyway, I made a mistake and ran Norton Utilities Speed Disk (version 6) in OS 9. Now the computer will not boot in OS X, and disk tools cannot fix the problem. I cannot reinstall OS X because my install disks are 10.3, and I get an error saying, that the version of the operating system on my hard drive is newer than the version on the install disk. Of course it is. I have been using Software Update to keep my OS up to date. But it won't give me the option of archive and install either.
I also tried fsck in single-user mode. It fails. In verbose mode, I get an error repeated infinitely.
Disk First Aid in OS 9 gives me, "Invalid Sibling Link."
So what can I do to get the system running again?

You have adequate free space on your hard drive. We recommend 5-6 GBs or 15 percent of the drive's capacity be free, whichever is greater. However, if you routinely burn DVDs, then you really need more free space because DVD burning will use nearly 6 GBs of space for temp file.
Your best solution is a larger hard drive. As for fragmentation I think you're making a mountain out of a molehill. I haven't defragged a drive since 10.3 was released, and I have not noticed any problems associated with fragmentation. You are fretting over fragmentation 4.5 GBs out of your 6 GBs of free space (that, BTW, is the 75 percent fragmentation you had reported by Norton Utilities.)
Perhaps a better solution for you is to download a good maintenance program and use it. I highly recommend TinkerTool System. However, if you don't wish to spend money on a top shareware program, then you could use CacheOutX or Onyx, both of which are freeware (all available at www.versiontracker.com or www.macupdate.com.) • BT Xtreme Experience ... A Rant / Complaint to BT

BT are incredibly renowned for their atrocious customer service and pernicious greed. I have been with them for over 14 years. Now I am leaving. And the relief is so huge i just had to write. More than relief. Its like I've finally cut ties with a force so relentlessly demanding and utterly sociopathic that its left me many times feeling like smashing the house up. Or something. I don't usually get so worked up about things. (I didn't smash the house up!) Nor do I usually write with so many descriptive terms. I'm usually a bit grumpy and fired up in the mornings, so that is the time I would choose to call BT whenever there was a problem. Fueled by adrenilin I would get the confidence to be firm and to explain myself clearly and stand my ground. Any other time of the day and I would be too tired to plan the call. Imagine having to get up the nerve and the confidence to phone someone up - that you are paying - whenever there is a problem. So many times I wimped out. Or got so far with the advisor(s), after so much time on one call, that I would give up. Or just hang up.
I was with BT for about 11 years until my phone was cut off. I had missed a couple of payments as I had been in rehab. (I'm out now and doing well). When I got out of rehab in Nov 2010, I phoned O2 up to get a package with them. I did not want to go with BT after horrible billing mistakes etc in the past. And many long hours on the phone to them. But O2 would take about a month to put the line in. I was kind of desperate to get a line in so I called BT and they said they could do it sooner (wierd as its BT that does the work either way). Here is my experience that I want to share. I know some people have had WAY worse.
Nov 10 approx - called BT. Line arranged to be installed Nov 26 2010.
Nov 26 - No dial tone. I call BT and they assure me my line is connected. They get me to troubleshoot etc. i phone them on and off for the next few days. Eventually they tell me an engineer will come out in about a week (a couple of delays on this). They don't know what's wrong. Blame my house.
Dec 6 approx - It is found that the line was installed in a place I had lived in 2 years earlier. And I had had a BT line for 2 years at my new place after living there. So the old addresss should have been long gone in their records.
    Dec 9 - Line installed.
Then come all the bills. On Dec 12 I recieved a first reminder of a bill for 4.50 after recieving my first bill (line rental and payment processing fee) 14.79. The 4.50 I disputed with them. They couldn't explain it.
Dec 16 - I recieve a check for 1 pence. i have it and a picture of it . No explanation. Dear Sir/madam. Please find enclosed cheque as agreed. Yours faithfully. British Telecom PLC. And I was locked in with these guys now for 12 months.
Dec 29 -  I had a final payment demand for the mysterious 4.50 threatening to limit my service and warning me there would be a charge to get the service back to normal. I disputed it. I had talked to them so much since first ordering. I had used a lot of money to call them on my mobile when all the problems were happening. I thought they owed me something. They offered to pay my mobile calls as long as I got an official itemised list somehow and sent it to them. Oh lordy. I didn't do this. I couldn't imagine what getting something like this may entail.
    Jan 12 - I pay the 14.79. i get the 4.50 written off.
Jan 31 - I get my bill. 7.50 late fees added for the 14.79
I pay it. Because I am tired.
Feb 6 - One off bill of 127.99 for engineering work carried out between Nov 26th (when the line was put into the wrong house) and Feb 13. Asked to pay by Feb 13th on the bill. They said it was for engineering work carried out on the 10th of December. As I remember, this was when the engineer came out the day after it was connected at the right address, because the line was very crackly and wasn't working well.
Another long couple of phone calls and they say it was written off... I get a letter confirming it a week later.
Since then one call out as the line went dead for a few days.
Upshot : Its not over yet. I have finally switched to O2 and am due to be connected on March 3 2012. I am writing all his mainly to get the BT experience off my chest BUT ALSO because I am quite nervous about what kind of charges they will think up to put on the final bill. I am dreading it. I was on a 12 month contract so they can't really charge me as thats finished. And its the dread of having to talk to them again. And the worry that they may make me pay some extortionate fee in order to switch to O2.
Analysis of what I've actually paid to BT in 14 months. (I've made 4 late payments - late by maximum of 28 days)
    387.00 Total payments I've made
    122.37 on calls
    208.79 on line rental
0 on call package (weekend plan)
    30.00 on late fees
    26.67 on payment processing fees
British telecom have essentially charged me 56.67 for the inconvenience to them of paying late and not paying by direct debit (even when I changed to paperless billing, printed out my own invoice, went to my local shop to pay it - it was still 1.89 a month!) I do understand these charges were in the contract and I did know about them (didn't realize the late payment fee was so high though at first). But if there are these expectations of me and all other BT customers, why can't we have any expectations from them. Why is it so hard to get anything from them.
And I have recieved in compensation 1p. That I have to go out and cash because its a check. Yay. I read of this happening to someone before as well, a check for 1p. All I can think is that it must be deliberate. A chance to get back at angry demanding customers.
I really wanted to share my experience as its been building up for so long.
On a final note, the whole organization was epitomized to me when, after finally getting them to write off the mysterious 4.50, and asking for some kind of compensation, the operator said to me.
“I just wrote off the 4.50. You have your line now. What more do you expect?” Then he asked me on a scale of 1-10 how happy was I with my call to BT today. Or something like that.
It makes me think that BT consider the 127.99 and 4.50 that they wrote off (after so many long agonizing phone calls from me) is a big favour to me. As if they were giving me the money by not making me pay it. Something quite twisted going on there to be sure.
Thanks for allowing me to share my experiences. Even if no-one reads it, I’m glad to get it out there.

Thanks for the replies. I see what you mean but the one clear advantage is that if there are problems, O2 has to sort it with openreach and i don't. I don't have to talk directly to anyone from BT again! I've actually never had a frustrating phone call to O2. Ever. I feel easy phoning them. Phoning BT is just dread - and this generally turns out to be justified dread.
Also why the empahisis on the fact that I am not leaving BT altogether. I know this. It is in my post.
This is a wierd forum - it is very hard to know who to trust.
And I really have to assume that BT call centre people etc are trained to be the way they are. It must be acceptable practice in BT for the simple reason that its been the same for years and if it was unacceptable it would have been changed. And people would have been fired for their behavior. But calls to BT are recorded. So the people I talk to on the phone are not afraid to be rude, oblique, blaming of the customer, patronizing. So it MUST be acceptable practice. And rarely getting a straight answer or relevant reply.
Its already happened on this thread.

  • Cannot resolve import statements

I recently decided to start messing around with some Java3d. I tried to get an example program to try to dissect but I can't even get past compilation. The main problem is the fact that the import statements cannot be resolved. I thought maybe I was using an outdated example program but upon further inspection of Oracle's own Java3d tutorials I saw the same import statements. I downloaded java3d 1.5.1 because I thought perhaps it wasn't included in the java core classes. This did not help me at all. So maybe it is a problem with the IDE (eclipse) not recognizing them. However, I have had no such success with Google thus far. I realize that this is more than likely a horribly simple mistake that anyone over a novice understanding of Java would be able to spot. But if anyone could help me figure out why I can't compile it would be much appreciated.
    Regards,
    Corey

  • Garbage in - Avoidance

Results are often or even always no better than the quality of what is available for original video. My weak points, besides lacking a lifetime of video experience, include basic needs discovered through trial and error, including:
    1. Jerky footage taken from hand-held or cheap still camera tripod. I have read past posts here and ordered a DV7000 fluid filled head tripod to help smooth out panning. I hope this helps. I know adding weight and tripod handle length is also a way to increase smoothness in panning, short of getting expensive motor driven hardware.
    2. Too much zooming. It's just too compelling to use the zoom on these cool video cameras. But x25 zoom is too much for this operator to handle without some way of keeping moving targets (kids and dogs) in frame. I'm thinking: zoom first, then shoot and use fades between scenes rather than the 'raw' and 'amateur' look of jerky or 'too quick' zooming.
I'm striving for exhibited care and a semblance of professionalism in my video work. I would appreciate some comments on how to get past the horrible beginner mistakes that show up so often these days. At least, with my background in Art Direction of still photo shoots, I know at this point to not move the camera around hap-hazardly but to stay focused on the subject and setting and mood for conveyance of purpose to the audience in each scene.
    TIA,
    Ken

A lot of good advice has already been given. All amateur filmmakers should take notes.
People tend to know amateur filmmaking when they see it, but they don't always know why. We're so used to seeing work that is so perfect, and so polished that anything with a little roughness to it just looks wrong. At the same time, it is not always easy to know where the line between amateur and professional technique is. So always look at things with a critical eye.
There are definately some things that just about everyone tends to do naturally when they get a camera in their hands for the first few times.
Remember, the camera is not the physical extension of your eyeball. The mental process for making sense from our vision is wholly different from the one for making sense from film. If you look at things with a camera the way you look at them with your eyes, your audience won't be able to make sense of it. This is why the concept of framing is so important.
Resist the urge to pan and zoom when you simply want to change the frame. Every movement of the camera should have an absolute purpose that will contribute to the narrative feel of the piece. If you do need to move in on the subject, move the camera itself. I'm not saying zooms can't be effective, but it's easy to abuse them. Handholding your camera is fine, but try holding it at chest level (hard without an LCD, but try). It will help you think of the camera as its own entity, and not part of your eye. Take time to compose your frame, and think about how it fits into the big picture.
Also, be in control of your frame. Make sure the shot you have is the shot you want (admittedly tough to do with animals and children). Don't be afraid to boss people around (in a nice way) and if you have the luxury of time, use it to make sure everything is how you want it. This is what makes a director a director.
Keep your editor in mind. Make sure you're getting footage that is going to cut together right. Shooting is always a disjointed experience for me, but watching something come together in an editing room is pure magic. (and this is where you edit out all your zooms and pans).
Lighting is important. Sound is important. Let me repeat myself. Lighting is important. Sound is important. Okay, moving on...
Finally, when shooting, let go of that voice in the back of your head telling you everything has to be perfect. That voice is handy in the planning stage (and you should definately do a lot of planning), but when you finally start shooting, let the process be intuitive. If you're stressing out over not screwing up, you're going to miss the happy accidents that make good shots great shots. Don't be afraid to experiment, because that's how you learn. Remember this is art, and there's nothing written in stone that says art has to look a certain way.

  • Netbook, must save space on 4GiB SSD!

I have an Asus Eee 901 with a 4GiB Master SSD, and I try as hard as I can to keep it as open as possible space-wise.
I noticed earlier that /var/cache/pacman/pkg was at more than a half a gig in size!
I ran pacman -Scc to clear it all out, because my netbook appears to be quite stable at the moment and I don't fiddle with critical files and such.
Have I made some horrible, terrible mistake?
Are there any other things I can do to save space on my little drive? (though at the time the largest directories are /lib and /usr).

Mecharuva wrote:Duly noted, karol. I opened GTKPacman to check out descriptions of all these things, and they're all labeled "Installed as a dependency for another package."
Pacman lists them as orphans, so then the package they depended on has already been removed, unless pacman is reporting the status of these packages erroneously? Could that be a possibility?
I don't want to break my system somehow by removing them.
Of course I could create a list somewhere and then reinstall them if I run into issues, no?
Skanky, I had tried putting /usr on my second hard drive once before, on another distro long ago, but I noticed some terribly sluggish performance, even for that distro. I was told it's because the slave SSD in the Eee 901 is not nearly as fast as the master.
I like fast, so I think I'll leave /usr on the master. I don't know if I'll compress it. That's a good amount of space, jakobm, but I don't want to put more on the CPU than there is already.
Those packages were needed by some other package, not the other way round.
A is a dependency for B. You first install A, then B. You first remove ('pacman -R') B, then A. You don't have to remove A, and if you run 'pacman -R B' only B will be removed, A will be left with the description that it was installed as a dependency for another package. If you 'pacman -Rs B' and A is not needed by other packages, both B and A will be removed.

  • Magsafe2 Power Cord constantly disconnects from MBA

What's the deal with this new power cord? There's a horrible seal from the charger to the computer and it's constantly disconnecting. This seems like a horrible engineering mistake. Is it just my cord or is this hapenning to everyone? They seriously need to fix this ASAP. ***?

Mind has done the same since new, it was a real pain at times. This AM I took a screen wipe and cleaned both halves of the connector. Just got a little black on the wipe but it made all the difference, it holds very tightly.
If I had to do it again I think I would just clean one half then try it. To me it seems like it holds too well for such a light computer; I can easily pull it straight across a flat surface with the cord now.

  • We got back on I-Tunes Store!!!!!!! Possible solution!

For anyone who lost I-Tunes store when they updated to I-Tunes 8.....
This worked for us, after many weeks of stress, so give it ago.
This was a suggestion by user Polydorus (thankyou):
If you have had Norton on your computer at anytime, and no longer using it, remnants of the software could be blocking I-Tunes Store, you need to use the official Norton Removal Tool - link below:
    http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/tsgeninfo.nsf/docid/2005033108162039?Open&d ocid=2007080716240739&nsf=tsgeninfo.nsf&view=docid
Select the appropriate software, save it to your desktop, double click on it, and then follow on screen instructions.
When our computer restarted, we could get on I-Tunes store straight away! Great!
Hope this helps at least a few of you!

Oh my gosh! I could kiss you! Ha ha ha. I haven't been able to get any of my programs to connect to the internet. I had a feeling it was that horrible Norton Anti- Virus 360. I tried uninstalling it several times but it never worked. I used the link you provided for the removal tool and it worked like a charm! I can now connect to iTunes, I can also connect my TomTom GPS and get updates as well. Thank you, thank you, thank you!

  • Switching from a PC to a Mac was a horrible mistake :(

I am being far more UNproductive than I should be on a Mac. Too many problems on a Mac.
I just switched to a Mac from a PC. Lots and lots of problems. I am power user and I think I really made a horrible mistake. I have wasted so much work time this past week, I feel like suing Apple for promoting an ease-of-use product that falls on its face, wastes my time, and wastes my money. Everything from obvious software and hardware security foibles to now I have NO permissions to delete things on my computer are happening on this Macbook.
Apple -- you seem just as simple and behind-the-times as when I used you last many years ago.
My main problem now (oh, I have many...) is that my permissions are now changed on my ENTIRE Macbook. AHHHHHHHH. How do I delete something on my desktop? It now says I have no permissions to delete a txt file on my desktop. Why? How/ What the heck did I do?
I really made a horrible mistake and now I can't suggest that anyone in my company switch. We're sticking to PCs, though I will try to stay with this Mac for at least one more week before relegating it to a big plastic paperweight my techies use for testing.
This is all very very very frustrating. Very frustrating.

Ok, you guys are right. I had to go to the store because my computer was in a loop and they said I needed to find another Mac to backup my data first. As I am in Asia, there are very few Macs around (I can't think of any friends that have one and I went out on a limb in my company to buy one first).
So the guy at the Mac store was NOT able to backup everything because there were permission errors on my Mac. So I did lose some fairly important data -- about 1.8GB of it . Yes, I realize I could have reinstalled it myself, but it cost me US$30 to have him do it and I wanted to ensure he was "liable" if anything went wrong. He installed the Chinese version though because he was more familiar with it and said afterwards we could change back to English. In fact afterwards we did change back to English, but only on about 98% of the menus... when I just arrived home I realized that there was still some Chinese artifacts and so I wanted to delete them to ensure a TOTALLY clean English-language install (he also said we could not do an Archive and Install because of the permissions problems, so I too, for the second time, just reinstalled my computer at home and wiped EVERYTHING away).
    Sheeeeez......
So the first software I installed after just reinstalling was Firefox, powered it up, and came to this forum... now I am downloading all the updates and growing numb over the thought of losing so much valuable data.
I really do like the design of the Mac, I like its general feel and ease of use.... but it is like grinding two ungreased gears together these past 2 weeks to get printers working at the office, to get the iSight camera light to turn off, and to realize to my horror that Mac hasn't changed so much in the last 10+ years since I last used her (or is it a him?).
This Mac borders more on a "consumer product" than a "computer", if you know what I mean... o maybe I like fidgeting with things too much?
You can tinker with MacOS X, but you must remember that once you do, you must know what you're doing. On Windows, since there's barely any permissioning system, it's easier to change things (which is also why there's so many security problems). If you also want to really tinker with MacOS X, you must also be prepared by knowing UNIX. UNIX is what MacOS X is built on (well, to be fair for the techies, yes, it's fused with a Mach kernel). So next time if you want to tinker with the system, you must be prepared. I modified how my Mac works, edited a few buttons, but I had to first back things up.

There is no such Trojan or other malware known today that will do that using OS X nor has there ever been one. The most probable explanation is that somebody hacked into your e-mail account on the server, so you should change that password to something stronger right away. If it had come from your Mac then there would almost certainly be copies of those messages in your Sent Mail mailbox.

  • Horrible mistake-mini cd stuck in slot drive

Unfortunately I was unaware that mini discs are NOT to be loaded into slot drives prior to doing this. Now it is stuck and won't eject. Is there anything I can do? Please help!

Hold it with the slot facing down. Gently shake the computer to get the disc into the slot. You can use a 3x5 card (or other heavy stock) to help guide it. When you can see it, grasp it with needle nose pliers or tweezers.

  • Please help me! I'm actually crying. I made a horrible mistake

Oh God.....what do I do? I accidentally erased EVERYTHING on my iPod. I had 1526 songs on it, and they're all gone! I'm in tears. What can I do? Is there an 'undo' function? What I did was I accidentally told it to automatically update this one Playlist, but I didn't realize that it would erase everything and replace it with just that playlist. EVerything is gone!! All my CDs, all my playlists, everything. I feel like someone just died. There's got to be a way I can fix this. Please help me.

    KillerTofu,
As long as you have not reloaded much (or any) new information to the iPod, the following links will direct you to software that has a (small/medium/good) chance of recovering some or all of your iPod’s music files. Several responders indicated that Recover4All worked for them (although it could be as a result of being first on the list below). Most are not shareware or freeware, so you may have to spend a little money.....
This link will give you several 'Erased iPod' recovery resources for both Mac and Windows users:
    http://forums.ipodlounge.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=45619
This PodSalvage software will only work with Macs running OS X. See the PodSalvage page at SubRosaSoft.com: http://www.subrosasoft.com/MacSoftware/index.php?mainpage=product_info&productsid=2
Make sure you read through many of the posts on the iLounge – some folks had good results, others had poor results. There seems to be a split camp on the effectiveness of recovery programs.
Either way, strongly consider a thorough backup strategy after you recover/replace your music: http://discussions.apple.com/click.jspa?searchID=394618&messageID=1263275

I installed the new version thinking it would be the same, It was horrible! uninstalled it... Installed the older version and now it won't open and when I try it says it can't because the library can't open because it was used on a newer version. Come on! I just want my music! I don't know whom to thank first-- b noir for telling me about the Lorraine fix or Lorraine for figuring out the fix. THE LORRAINE FIX WORKED FOR ME!!! (I feel a little like I am advertising "Hooked on Phonics" with that last line!)
Thank you doesn't say it strongly enough, but THANK YOU b noir and Lorraine for your help. I was to the boiling point last night and starting to get there tonight. Now I am resting easy and thankful that there is a community of computer users out there who care enough to troubleshoot problems together and work together to figure out a solution--and then to take the time to post and share information.
I would STRONGLY suggest that anyone who is having the iTunes issues where iTunes just plain won't open at all after downloading the newest version and has a pc with Norton Internet Security 2005 try the "Lorraine Method."
I am so happy I think I might sing. Or not--I will let my songs on iTunes do the singing for me now that I can again!!!!!!!
And to those still looking for answers--be patient--I now know how incredibly frustrating this can be and I hope that you all find your solutions very very soon!!

What a horrible way to treat customers. I was due for updates on my phones and thought I should maybe check some other prices but have been with Verizon for 20 yrs so ended up there. I got 2 new IPhones 5s and the wife couldn’t decide what she wanted so she stayed with old phone but this locked me into a new 2 yr contract . Within a wk one of the new iPhones started turning on and of like 10 –15 times a day. Wk 2 it turned off and would not turn on again . It was my sons who was in college at the time so we talked and he took it in to a Verizon store where he was told I need to come in since the account was in my name. He was away from home , Verizon could see on account it was his phone they said it was not abused, they could not even turn it on , they sold me the phone give him another phone maybe even a loaner till he gets another. So now I need to go to store and explain to 3 different people this is my phone and my son has it and I need a new one. what a waste of time after about 2 hrs and talking to different people and yes they said there were notes on his account from other person he had talked to from different store. So I finally walk out with a receipt in hand and being told I would have a new phone in a couple days. As I sat in my vehicle thinking this is stupid I looked at my receipt and noticed it said droid on it so back into Verizon I went. The salesman said that’s what your son has on his account. My son had activated a friends old phone so he has one since VERIZON REFUSED to give him one. Another hr 3 people and yes they can see he had a new iPhone and notes on it from other store. Sometimes sorry just doesn't do it. I was now late for a appointment . Now I walk out and have been told I will get a new iPhone in the mail in about 2 wk Yes 2 wks   again I bought it there just give me a new one and you send old one back. I will also get a new droid that I have to send back because they said they cant cancel it  . In about 3 days I get the Droid and sent it back Verizon mistake and a waste of my time . After waiting over 2 wks and not receiving a new iPhone back to Verizon I went . I am now bitter at Verizon after doing 20 yrs of business with them. 3 people 1 hr later I was told it got delivered to my post office . I got the tracking num called the post office and they say o yes that was the droid. Go back in to Verizon another hr of explaining I walk out being told I will get a new iPhone in a couple of days, We’ll see . Once again I got the phone in your store just give me a new one . Do you realize how much of my time you have wasted ? do you care? O what is Your Policy ? How many Billion did you make last year ? I am Locked into a new 2 yr contract . Why don’t you just release me ? After 20 yrs do you think I will ever renew my contract ?

Simple process. If an iPhone go to the Apple Store and not Verizon
the phone from Verizon will be a refurbished device and not new unless under the 14 day worry free guarantee
    good luck

  • 4.01 is not compatible with Norton toolbar?

I have used Firefox religiously for the last few years and have always been happy with the stability and reliability. But now I have installed the latest version only to find that it did not work with the Norton Toolbar and the Identity Safe in particular. So, I have had to reinstall the 3.6.17 and uninstall the 4.01. Now the earlier version is not functioning correctly. Keeps asking me if I want it to be my default browser, has the home, reload and stop icons relocated in unlikely places and doesn't function with the same predictable reliability. Can I get a fix for this? Or can I get an update notice when the bugs have been worked out of the new version so that I can get the Norton Toolbar back?

Symantec need to correct a mistake they made with their add-ons. They originally updated their add-ons after quite a delay to work with Firefox 4.0 as shown here - http://community.norton.com/t5/Norton-Internet-Security-Norton/Firefox-4-compatibility-hotfix-is-now-available/td-p/428894
They made an error with the update in only listing it as compatible with Firefox 4.0, so they will not install on Firefox 4.0.1 and subsequent Firefox security updates. Symantec have indicated they will be releasing an update to correct their error soon, for details see http://community.norton.com/t5/Norton-Internet-Security-Norton/Norton-Toolbar-not-compatible-with-FF-4-0-1/td-p/442788/page/12

  • Horrible experience with HP Envy recovery image - Support Feedback

I've recently had a horrible experience trying to get an HP sleekbook to run an af initial recover reimage.
Most of this was because of HP support and them treating me like a criminal.
I purchased the laptop at the start of this week and the only thing I did was requested it to have 8GB of ram rather than 4GB and imediately reimaged using the minized image.
The reimage failed with the error "Detect some error during PININST_BBV"
The log indicated that the intel rapid storage driver had failed to install.
I read on the HP forums that people had reset the bios back to default prior to performing the reimage which had fixed this problem but it made no difference for me.
I then recovered it using the reset machine option from the recovery center. Which worked correctly.
But when I went to use the machine I saw that windows was no longer activated. I check the details and the showed that the product key was blocked. I did quick google on the partial product key and found that it was a key that was released and used for pirated copies of windows 8.
I rang HP and after explaining the situation was told that I had brought a used laptop that the product key had been stolen. I explained that it wasn't used and that I'd brought it brand new. I was told that I'd need to buy a new copy of windows 8 or get the product key from the shop I brought it from.
I explained that the product keys are encrypted in the UEFI and are read during the reimage. HP support told me again that they couldn't help me and that I'd need to buy a new copy of windows 8 or get the product key from the shop where the laptop was purchased.
After trying to explain how product keys work with windows 8 and new laptops and having the same comments copy and pasted to my screen I ended the conversation.
After all this I decided to crack open the laptop and remove the extra 4GB of memory and attempt to perform another minimized reimage. This actually worked fine and the OS got the correct product key and life was good again. I'm guessing that the blocked product key is used by HP to perform the initial OS install prior to reading the product key from the bios.
I am totally disgusted by HP's support and attitude towards me, the fact that they don't know how their laptops work nor care about listening to what a customer has to say.  I won't make the same mistake of buying an HP product again.

    Hey Relent0r....
I hear ya.... I have been doing support for over 20 years and recently HP have lost the meaning of "Customer Service".  All we did was take out the original drive and put in a new SSD (something we do everyday)
I had the same issue.  Product Key Blocked etc.... 0xc004e003 etc but after be told a very similar story to you... Sorry Sir, we cant help...
First issue was the I grabbed to Windows 8 Pro and not the Windows 8 Standard recovery DVD's... not a good first try but once we got the version right... followed the process below.... all done!
    Hope this helps!
Luckily one of our tech's found this procedure...
    Installation
Insert the original Windows 8 Professional 64bit Disc to the DVD drive and launch the boot drive order by pressing F9
In the driver order, select Boot from EFI File and hit enter. A window will open up, showing both the HDD/SSD and DVD drive along with a unique code next to each hardware device (This ID probably has something to do with Secure Boot).
Choose EFI Sector DVD and hit Enter
Then select <EFI> >>> <Boot> >>> Bootx64.EFI. After this system will blank out and then asked to Boot from DVD.
Press any key to boot from DVD. If it's done correctly, you'll see a HP logo starting up
After the DVD has finish initializing, Windows 8 setup screen will appear. click Next
Accept the EULA and then select Custom Install
Create a new partition on the drive you want to install the OS.
Note: Windows will create 3 additional partitions, along with the one for OS installation. This makes the drive as GPT.
    Install Windows 8
After installation and customization of personal settings. Go to Control Panel>System and you'll see Windows 8 is activated.
