A moral dilema

I'm getting an iPod tomorrow. I am totally geeked! I anticipate zero problems plugging it in and syncing my library. However, my little brother just bought a pc with Vista and he's having a helluva time with his music. I was over there last week and tried to burn a cd from the HP music library or Media Player or whatever he has, and wound up walking away in frustration. Today I got the idea that it would be a great thing if, when I visit on Sunday, I download iTunes for him, plug in my iPod and give him my library. He'll be thrilled. (Most of my library is from my cd's, but I can always authorize his computer for the few iTunes store-bought tracks.) Not knowing much at all about how Vista works, such as whether or not there will be a seperate iTunes library folder, how to make iTunes the default media player, etc. I started looking around online. The number one thing I'm keyed on right now is the idea that my brand new iPod could get corrupted after I've had it less than 24 hours! Should I just walk away from this idea and be content with my good intentions? Any feedback would be much appreciated.

dmchord, My suggestion: forget it. Uploading songs from an iPod to a computer can be done with the aid of 3rd party programs, but does not happen just by plugging in.
If you want to give your brother any songs, photos, etc, and you are clear that you are not violating copyright by doing so, use a flash drive and copy them from your computer to his.

  • I Tunes downloads onto my PC but won't open. Can someone assist  with this dilema?

I have downloaded I Tunes to my PC numerous times. The download goes fine. When I hit the icon to open I Tunes up, nothing happens. I have removed I Tunes from my system and reloaded, and still it won't open. Can anyone help with this dilema?

Thanks for this mha007 - I can now open FF with a new profile. Can I copy my settings from the old profile or will this bring over the same problem, maybe a corrupt file. If it would bring the same problem, is there any way I can check which file is corrupt, apart from taking them over one by one?

i have not set up time machine either but i do back up to a site called backupblaze...

    Step 1
    Remove "MacKeeper" as follows.
"MacKeeper" has only one useful feature: it deletes itself.
Note: These instructions apply to the version of the product that I downloaded and tested in early 2012. I can't be sure that they apply to other versions.
IMPORTANT: "MacKeeper" has what the developer calls an “encryption” feature. In my tests, I didn't try to verify what this feature really does. If you used it to “encrypt” any of your files, “decrypt” them before you uninstall, or (preferably) restore the files from backups made before they were “encrypted.” As the developer is not trustworthy, you should assume that the "decrypted" files are corrupt unless proven otherwise.
    In the Finder, select
    Go ▹ Applications
from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-A. The "MacKeeper" application is in the folder that opens. Quit it if it's running, then drag it to the Trash. You'll be prompted for your login password. Click the Uninstall MacKeeper button in the dialog that appears. All the functional components of the software will be deleted. Reboot.
Failure to remove MacKeeper will result from neglecting any one of these points:
Quit MacKeeper before dragging it to the Trash.
Don't empty the Trash after dragging the application to it. Let MacKeeper delete itself.
Don't try to drag the MacKeeper icon in the Dock to the Trash.
Here are some general suggestions. If you want your computer to be usable, don't install crapware, such as “themes,” "haxies," “add-ons,” “toolbars,” “enhancers," “optimizers,” “accelerators,” "boosters," “extenders,” “cleaners,” "doctors," "tune-ups," “defragmenters,” “firewalls,” "barriers," “guardians,” “defenders,” “protectors,” most “plugins,” commercial "virus scanners,” "disk tools," or "utilities." With very few exceptions, this stuff is useless, or worse than useless.
The more actively promoted the product, the more likely it is to be garbage. The most extreme example is the “MacKeeper” scam.
The only software you should install is that which directly enables you to do the things you use a computer for — such as creating, communicating, and playing — and does not modify the way other software works. Never install any third-party software unless you know how to uninstall it.
    Step 2
Restore from the last backup that predates the unwanted changes.

  • Bit of a B.T Dilema ?

Hi All..I,m  kind of in a dilema  & puzzled It says on Open Reach website that my Exchanhe ( sg6 4pr ) is now Accepting Orders for FTTC  but  on the B.T Checker it says i,m not   due until March 31st , well i posted on here and was told it might be end of June until they connect the cabinet ,what i,m wondering is it worth calling B.T to ask what this means ? seems strange one website tells you one thing and another tells you something else

  • Upgrade Dilema.....

    Fellow aperture users,
I have been using aperture since its initial release on my G4 powerbook 1.33ghz 1.5gb and although at times it is sluggish, I persevere. I should mention, I shoot with a Nikon D70 in RAW format, so my files are only approx 5mb each.
I am considering upgrading my system, but am in a dilema as to what to go for, either the new mac book pro, or a Power Mac G5 DC 2.0GHz /512MB /160GB /SD /GF6600LE.
I would appreciate any feedback as to which performs better using aperture, as well as generally.
i tend to feel I would be better with the mac book, as I like to have my files when I travel, and that way could get away with just one machine, rather than 2. However, I use photoshop also. How are people gettign around this without the intel version? Does it work ok for the meantime? can you still open a file direct from aperture?
    thanks in advance,
    Svendo

The MacBook Pro will be faster than that particular G5.
If you want a faster G5, you need a couple things:
    1) 512 MB of RAM won't work at all. 2 GB is a practical minimum.
    2) You need the 7800 GT graphics card and not the GF6600LE. Video card is VERY important. VERY.
Photoshop will be a bit slow on the MacBook. How much are you using it? Adobe's saying it's around 9 months before a UB version of it ships, so do keep that in mind. From a rough guess let's say Photoshop on a MacBook is about the same speed as on a 667 Powerbook G4.

  • Dilema over Plant / Organization Structure

    Hi,
We are a Service Provider Company based in Orissa.
We receive Contracts from other Companies & execute them across India (different Project Sites). We have different Project Site across India.
In SAP, do we need to create all the Project Locations as PLANT.
Or, we can simply create a SINGLE PLANT & treat all the Project Sites Storage Locations.
As of now I have treated all the Site Locations as Plant.
For example, in Jharkhand, we have got two offices, one in Ranchi & another in Dhanbad. The Ranchi Site is taking care of three different projects running near by & Dhanbad Site is taking care of two different rojects. We have created both  Ranchi & Dhanbad as Plants.
But while discussing the Organization Structure with our seniors, some one suggested that there is no need to create Project Sites a Plant; the same can be managed using Storage Locations only. They have proposed to create Jharkhand as a Plant; Ranchi & Dhanbad as Storage Locations. The problem with me is that there are different people handling purchase & stock both in Ranchi & Dhanbad.
Also there is some Stock Transfer from Ranchi to some other States (for example, Guwahati & Silchar in Assam).
If we create Jharkhand & Assam as Plants and  Ranchi ,Dhanbad, Guwahati & Silchar  as Storage Locations, will be logically true.
I am in a dilema as I am not aware of how the Project Systems people map the Plants in SAP. Here in our case, the Project Systems guy is thinking of STATE as Plants while I personally think that Office Locations from where purchase & stock keeing is done as Plants.
I am confused about the process for transfering Materials among the locations (withinn and outside State)
    Pls. guide.
    Regards
    Aditi..

Discuss with your client , How they are handling the procurement in Legacy..
IF you they are using de-centralized Procurement then you need to define the respective procurement centres as Plants.. (Which will allow you to address the taxes & Valuation of Material )
If they are using the sites only for monitoring the stocks & goods movements, then you need to define them as Sto Locations..
It all depends upon the inputs from the client & the Legacy business scenario..
Prepare a Presentation detailings the advantages & dis-advantages  of defining as a Plant or Sto location..
First Discuss the same with your colleagues and  then with the client..

  • IPod Touch restoring dilema

I'm trying to restore my iPod touch and all that I see, is the screen with the iTunes icon disc and usb cable. When it starts to restore, it gets stucked in the part where it says "+waiting for ipod+".I can see the Apple logo and a continuous loading bar. It just stays like that even after the whole night. I even tried it on a different computer, but the problem occurs as well. When I disconnect the usb cable it says: The IPOD "iPod" could not be restored. An unknown error occurred (9) Please help me, I've done everything that I've read, I even went to a local store, but they couldn't help me, it seems that the only thing they do it's sell, not help. The problem is that I live in Puerto Rico, and there aren't any Apple store, or at least in the area where I live. And to worsen my dilema, the product replacement option excludes Puerto Rico, I don't know why, because it's name is shown on the states list. All the help and support, would be appreciated, Thank you.

Disable all antivirus (do you also use Window defender?) and disable the computer's security software.
Next try the manual install included here:

  • Morally what is right?

OK, so the story is simples....
I have been with BT all my life from at the age of about 19 I first needed to have my own phone line, I am now 48. I have been offered all sorts of different deals by competitors, but stuck with BT because of very high reliability and expert engineering when the few faults I have had were rectified quickly and efficiently.
I have been on Broadband for a while and invested in Infinity and BT vision as decided to move away from Sky, though had serious considerations to make change to Sky as BT was same cost for less TV.
I have a rare fault and no phone or broadband. I also have 2 friends asking me about BT Infinity.
i have been in contact with the call centre since the 3 days and have been in my view misled, lied too and not really considered. The operative at the call centre was apologetic, assured me of care and escalation but I have never had one call back. Every day I have rung up and been told call was not loaded, they were digging holes, lots of people affected, an engineer has been allocated etc etc.
So today chasing up I was told due to high demand in the area they are pushing back the call to Wednesday...... Well the first operative has left me a VM as it has been apparently escalated, that was at 11 this morning and still no call, so I am about to ring them back and see when the engineer will arrive. Not much to ask is it?
What I resent is the **bleep** and bull and deliberate misleading, that has really got me cross. I work in a service industry and we don't always get it right but I give the honest answer and expectations, not what people want but they can plan their alternatives. In fact whilst writing this Andy from BT has just been on to say this is being escalated to Open Reach and he will call me back within a working 8 hours...... So the saga persists, but his manager will ring me within 2 hours. I cannot speak to anyone in open reach as he can't it is down to email..
So morally then should I reccomend BT to my friends? On this basis can I say the previously superlative support is worth such a risk?
I have effectively been forced to be at home for several days when I could and indeed should have been at other places on the offchance BT turn up and need access........
Well, when all sorted what sort of compensation should I get, more than the loss of service I venture.
The only plus side is the few telephone canvassers but my elderly parents are feeling a bit unloved.
What really galls me is the misleading statements..........
So much I thought I would post here to see if others have had similar and what happened or they did about it.

So if OpenReach are responsible, then the kind of customer care, interest and support is the same for any other supplier, what advantage does that give BT over the competition........ None I venture, thus my reasoning for staying with BT, the proposal that if things go wrong they can sort out quickly and efficiently are no longer valid, thus I ought not use those assumptions in comparing other providers.
I have just had a very honest conversation with my call handlers boss, he has provided an expectation level that I really don't like but it is honest and sets the level so that at least I can deal with that, which means a call back from them telling me if Open Reach have decided to escalate the resolution and get here earlier than Wednesday.
I truly suspect that the date of Wednesday, the 3rd date provided by them is likely to be the case, showing in truth that no escalation took place and that in real terms they have put the call back twice. This is all despite being told the call has been escalated on 5 occasions, holes were being dug, engineers have been tasked, someone is on the case etc etc.
It still says on the website today at 17:00.
Shoddy, appalling and unlikely to resolve me keeping the account for much longer if the competition gets more boxes ticked in terms of price and provision. I daresay from a contractual point of view that I could walk away without penalties as a judge is hardly going to say that I was being provided with an appropriate service.
Open Reach left a manhole cover off which I hit on the way home from shift at 3 in the morning too, BT coffed up for that, it feels like I am heading towards it again with some sense of inevitability........
But I can hardly reccomend the service now can I, though I can say that the likely response to faults would be no worse with BT than anyother provider, but it wont be better......... will it?

  • A dilema!

I know that this is a shot in the dark.  It's highly unlikely that anyone reading these forums has had intimate use of BOTH of the following laptops.  I.E. - has used both and can form an opinion on the tradeoffs given the hardware differences.
A505-S6025 has a Core i3 330M processor (i5 chipset).  Discrete video is the Geforce 300M with 512MB onboard memory.  I purchased this laptop, 12 days ago and love it's performance.  It is a bit marginal, in gaming, but obviously it is not designed as a primary gaming laptop.  Paid $799.
Now... A505-S6986 has a Core2Duo T6600 processor.  Not sure on the chipset, but my last gaming rig I built with the desktop version of that processor.  Think the chipset was 975 or something like that...right before the 'i' motherboards were released.  Video is the GT 230M with 1GB onboard memory.
So this is my dilema.  Clearly, the i3 processor is nice and probably will whip the c2d on processing/multitasking.
Also what is clear is that the GeForce GT 230M would stomp the mainstream 300M.  So, what I need to know is how does this level out in the end?
Is the performance loss in processing power (cpu) versus the gain in gpu power mutual?  ie...  Does the gain make up for the loss...over all.
Couple things need to be thought about here:  different motherboards/chipsets will affect things.  Might also be differences in power consumption/cooling as well.  c2d is a bit old.  My gaming desktop is now 3yrs old with a c2d.  So, that is another concern.
Any thoughts or suggestions are welcomed.  They just put the S6986 on sale for $599 at Office Depot.  This is why I'm in a dilema.  I still have 3 days before I'm literally stuck with this laptop.
Only other caveat is that the latter laptop comes with Home version of Windows 7.  I always use pro versions as I like control over my operating system and group policy without using registry hacks.  Only costs $89 to upgrade to pro, from what I understand.

    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

I think I've already come to a conclusion.  Writing the initial post just helped me think about it.  This is even after comparing both gpu's and cpu's separately.
I'm going to stick with the i3.  It's very snappy.  4 cores (2 virtual) may not seem like a lot, but couple that with the lower power (read: less heat) and the noticeable performance boost while multitasking (i do that, a lot, especially editing photos while doing other things).
My desktop E6600 c2d can barely handle Vista.  I shudder to think what a mobile version of that die process would mean for Win7.  I can live with 'marginal' performance gaming for the laptop.  When I game, I prefer the desktop with the 40" Samsung 1080p hdtv anyway (yes, it's my monitor...not a tv).
Thanks for reading.  Thoughts still welcomed but I think I'm gonna stick with the S6025 after weighing all of the pros/cons.

Hi jamjar62, you know you are the only person who can answer that question.
Why not just leave well alone for a few weeks/months and see how things go. You might save yourself sheds of money.
I just had Infinity installed about three weeks ago and I'm doing the same for now. Down the road if I feel like I need a better modem/router or need to free up a power socket I may consider getting something else.

  • A new dilema, code review for newbie

OK, now my dilema is taking input values from an applet and working them into my methods. I have read several tutorials, but I'm not finding any help. So far, I have written this code which does not complie (as expected). My methods seem solid, but my integration of the methods into an applet is far from decent. I have a feeling that I'm just going in circles here.

    1. I am confusing java application commands with java applet commands (shouldn't they be similar?)
    2. Can applets even allow for pop up dialog boxes?

  • CS5 Graphic card dilema

    Hello,
    i'm building a new PC for use of only Photoshop CS5 extended + Illustrator (OS=Windows 7 64bit).
I have chosen all the components (i5-760, 8 GB DDR3, P55 chipset etc...) except the graphic card.
Main dilema is getting over these two cards:
    1. Sapphire HD 6850 1 GB
    2. MSI GTX 460 Hawk 1 GB
Since ive had a lot of problems with AMD/ATI drivers on HD3850 card (BSOD with catalyst), i was thinking to "switch" over on nVidia (there's many info on the web regarding Adobe support for nVidia CUDA, OpenCL, etc...)-
The only requirements for the graphic card is: SILENCE and STABILITY (drivers).
I would like to know if there is anyone with any experience on usage of these cards (6850 or GTX 460), so the questions are:
    a) Image quality on nVidia (colors etc?) + driver/openGL experience?
    b) any problems with OpenGL functions on HD 6850 (basic, normal, advanced available)?
Any help and comments is appreciated.
    Thank you in advance.

The only thing i have to say about normal updates. Frequent driver updates to me does not say, Ohh they provide good support." It tells me Ohh they found lots of bugs, but thats me, I have a beta tester mind frame.
It's not frequent, it's monthly (as in "on a plan").  Monthly driver updates don't say any such thing.  It says "ATI has a clear policy of supporting their cards with software updates after the sale", and "They have their software development act together".  A company that avoids making updates in today's environment may do so because it's expensive or risky to do so.
    function(){return A.apply(null,[this].concat($A(arguments)))}
But as we know there is no such thing as a perfect video driver set, if there was .. they would not have jobs.
You seem to be fixated on new releases being because of bugs...
Software is never "done", so it cannot be "perfect".  When new functionality is being added, new releases bring that functionality out to users of existing hardware.  Think about that for a moment...  At first blush it doesn't seem to benefit ATI sales to make it possible to play the latest game on a card someone bought a few years ago.  But think how it builds brand loyalty. I suppose I'm a poster child for that.

  • Best Buy and Sprint have no sense of morals- I do not recommend either

I would just like to take the time to post about how Sprint and Best Buy have done a really wonderful job of screwing my monthly budget and account. My ex and I still share the same phone plan and he needed to upgrade his phone. He went into a Best Buy Mobile store to complete this upgrade and the sales associate at Best Buy needed me to provide my "Security Code" to open the account and complete the transaction. Well while the associate had my account opened they allowed my ex to open NEW SERVICES ON MY ACCOUNT. When I found out the new services had been open the 14 day return window had passed AND not to mention that the only way I was made aware of such services was by receiving my bill AFTER THE 14 DAY RETURN WINDOW. Completely absurd and a violation in contractual law. I contacted Sprint on several occasions- was left on hold for 45 minutes, hung up on, transferred from one dept to the next, promised return calls- you name the worst customer experience and Sprint has matched it. Apparently Sprint's take on the whole incident was that once you provide your "Security Code" to the representative you are giving access to do anything and everything on your account- it baffles me bc that is almost saying if someone walks into a bank and has my social security number that they should be able to borrow money in my name. I would not recommend Sprint services to anyone. After speaking on the phone with the Asst. Manager of the Best Buy location that allowed such NEW services to be opened under my account they were unwilling to assist me in rectifying this problem. I was told that I could sit on the phone with Sprint while the associate ate his dinner in the back. I sat there for 45 minutes and they were unable to offer me any resolution for their error. I have purchased thousands of dollars in goods at Best Buy but at the end of the day I will NOT be returning to the store with my business. I will be placing a complaint with the NY Attorney General's office against both Sprint and Best Buy for their lack of care when handling accounts on behalf of customers.

    Hello User834811-
It was definite nice of you to allow your ex-boyfriend to remain on your phone plan.  I’m sorry to hear that he may have taken advantage of that generosity by opening some new services which have added to your bill.
Regrettably, by providing that security code to our sales associate and allowing your ex-boyfriend to be on the account, we cannot be responsible for any extra services that he started.  While it is painful to hear, this sounds like something that you need to discuss with him, especially if it’s financially impacting you.  I can also only recommend working with Sprint to see what assistance they can provide to either cancel or refund those services.
I absolutely apologize that you were treated this way by the store.  It’s one thing to advise a customer that the manager is currently unavailable and another to phrase it the way the store did.  I will be documenting this for the store as it sounds like the associate your spoke with could use some additional training on how to handle these situations.
    Sincerely,

  • Wireless Network printing dilema

I have a Photosmart 2525 All in One. I have Apple MacBooks/Ipads at home, and have just upgraded from ADSL broadband to cable broadband.  The printer was previously ethernet cable connected into the ADSL modem, but now the  printer and cable modem are in different parts of the house.  How do I get the printer to connect to the cable modem to enable network printing.  Reading the manual it looks like I need a wired solution, but that is not physically possible.  I have an Apple Airport device I can plug into the printer, but I still cant seem to get the printer to connect to the cable modem.   Help!

    Hello Ralily,
    Welcome to the HP Forums.
I see that you are having some connectivity issues.
I have located a document that shows how to Share Your Printer on a Network with Apple AirPort.
If the troubleshooting does not help resolve your issue, I would then suggest calling HP's Technical Support to see about further options for you. If you are calling within North America, the number is 1-800-474-6836 and for all other regions, click here: click here.

  • Live Recording DISASTER - help, advice, moral support...

I've been using my Powerbook and Firepods to do 16ch live recordings for the past 4 months. The first 20 times or so were for friends' bands or just practice, all for free. Last night was the first paying gig, and it also happened to be the first time the recording didn't come out right. Scattered throughout the tracks for all 3 bands are periods of audio distortion/warping/f*ed up useless garbage. Sometimes its only on 1 track, sometimes all of them. It always happens in a section, there do not seem to be any random momentary blips.
This is very similar to a problem i had momentarily in the studio that i recently posted about. I bought a SPDIF cable to physically connect the two firepods for better syncing, and I'm using the aggregate device for a full 16 channels. I thought i had the problem solved, we finished tracking with no problems. My environment is trimmed down to only the necessary tracks, and as far as I can tell, nothing else was different than all of the previous successful attempts. My 160 gb fw hd was 50% full.
Up to this point, the one night that really counted, I was 100% confident in my rig. now I have no idea what to do, or what to tell the bands. two of them also hired videographers for a DVD with our audio. i've worked hard to get this kind of gig, and then this. and ultimately, its my fault. yeah, so thats that. if you've made it this far, thanks for reading my venting.
    Powerbook G4 1.67   Mac OS X (10.4.4)   2 gigs RAM, 2 Presonus Firepods, LaCie 160 gb FW 800

I do not have final cut pro. i haven't messed around with the files much yet, we had a live sound gig tonight. (tested recording, and it messed up again, something must be wrong still) one thing i tried on a kick drum track was eq'ing out all of the highs, which got rid of most of the mess. but on a few vocal parts, nothing could be done short of overdubbing. i guess this could be my learning experience for salvaging recordings.
we've thrown out the idea of a md or dat board mix before, and we'll definitely do it from now on. are there better ways? i really love doing this, and I know the machine can do it, i just don't know what changed.
