A Moral Wrong

Last Sunday, my Droid DNA phone would not charge and ran out of power. I took it to my local Verizon store in Sycamore, IL, and asked what I could do to either get another phone or get my current one fixed. The clerk there told me that, because I was six months short of my contract renewal period, a new phone would cost full retail value, and that none of the smart phones in the store were less than $400. He said I could add an additional line to my current account, which would cost $40 a month, and I could get a new phone at a discount.
Neither of these options would work for me. I asked if there was anything else they could do. Could I get another phone and pay for it over a period of time? No. He said if I had an old phone, I could activate it and use it, but that wasn't an option as I traded my old phone in when I got the Droid. He then warned me that if I switched carriers, Verizon would keep my old phone number. This turned out to be wrong.
I was forced to switch carriers and went over to T-Mobile because they will pay my early termination fees from Verizon. A new phone was included in this plan, which I will pay for over the life of the plan. Unfortunately, because my old phone didn't work, they couldn't transfer over my contacts. I knew I'd saved my contacts to the Verizon Cloud, so I figured I could get them from there.
But I was wrong. Verizon immediately deleted everything I had stored on their Cloud system when I switched over to T-mobile. I lost all my photos, videos, and contacts.
First, if I had been given more serviceable options, such as a payment plan for a new phone, or the chance to buy a used phone, or a loaner phone until my Droid could be fixed, I would have stayed with Verizon. Until this point, the service quality and network coverage Verizon provides left me a very satisfied customer.
Second, Verizon shouldn't immediately eliminate someone's personal data from the Cloud. This seems like rude and vindictive behavior. Even former customers should have access to data stored there and given a grace period -- even as little as a day or two -- to retrieve their data from the Cloud.
Because of these actions, I have lost family photos and videos that can never be retrieved. I was lucky enough to post many of the photos online, but almost all the videos are lost. This is a cruel disservice to someone who was a loyal customer for years. Verizon should realize that former customers could be returning customers again in the future. After all, I was once a T-Mobile customer, and now I'm back with them again. But I will never, ever, go back to Verizon. They stole precious memories away from me.

  • Lack of support for mpeg2 is moraly wrong !

I feel it is morally wrong for this application to not support the native format of the end product.
Dvd is mpeg2 -- mpeg2 is dvd. How can you possibly sell a product that does not support the native format of the product.
I have seen comment that apple are leaving space for the pro apps. Crap !!!! there is nothing pro about mpeg2. It is a domestic standard.
bluray - dvdhd are new formats does that make them pro. NO.
I do not expect the next 'update' top include suport for mpeg2, perhaps apple cant afford the licencing ??
I am just really aggrivated that I cannot use the mpeg2 video from my camera directly in a DVD application.
Apple should be ashamed to deliver this product with this missing feature.
    Cheers,
    Gerrit.

    "Morally" wrong?
Just because you chose a video camera that saves footage in an inferior format that is really meant to be the final, viewable version and not to be edited or further processed in other application, no need to get all up in a tiff that Apple is somehow to blame for your poor purchasing decision.
Part of the issue with supporting MPEG2 in iDVD is that you are missing one key point. Not all MPEG2 files are created equal. MPEG2 files can be compressed/encoded in a wide range of settings, bit rates, etc. In order to fit all your content you want onto a Video DVD, iDVD has to determine the bit rate and compression settings in order to make it all fit. It is very unlikely that some random MPEG2 file you drop into iDVD is going to have the correct compression method needed for that particular iDVD project and therefore iDVD would first have to expand the MPEG2 file back out to a standard DV video format then re-encode it back into MPEG2 at the correct settings to make it work with the rest of the DVD content. This would make for a very LONG process in an already long process and take up a TON more drive space to work.

  • IPhone 3Gs Connection Problems IOS 5.1.1

I have an iPhone 3Gs on IOS 5.1.1 and when it loses connection to my carrier, also wifi is not connected.  It worked before on ios 5.0.  Is there a way to fix this?
    Thanks!

I came across this post as my iPhone 3Gs had gone into recovery mode on its own accord.   I had hundreds of photos unsaved and was gutted when I saw this post, I felt even worse as it was not the information (gdgmacguy) I wanted to read.
Unfortunately, the above post is simply wrong! A system cannot destroy information in a blink of an eye.   If it were that easy, the forensic teams across the world would have a hard time.  A criminal could simply force a phone into recovery to remove all the data.  Please!
I managed not only to take the phone out of recovery mode but also, salvaged all the data held on it.
To be fair, I am a little annoyed at Apple for not offering a salvage option on the device for such a situation.  And it may be that they will not like me sharing this information, in which case I believe this view to be morally wrong because photos are so important.  We all make mistakes, in terms of forgetting to backup from time to time.
What I used was the Redsn0w software, running as an administrator in XP compatibility mode.  In the ‘Extras’ section it as a Recovery Fix option.  It simply runs some software that takes the device out of recovery mode.  I had to run it twice for some reason but the second time (out of desperation) worked a treat.  The phone is now exactly as it was before it went into recovery mode.  More to the point, it allowed me to backup all the photos and videos that I had failed to do before hand.  And let’s face it, photos and videos are usually the most valuable stuff we keep on our phones.
I hope this help anyone in the same situation. I really hope someone from apple reads it and is able to convince the bosses that a recovery option is very important.  And to take note that YES it is possible to recover data on a phone stuck in recovery mode.  And more than likely it would be easier for apple, compared to other non-apple professionals.
    Good luck.

  • I have 2 Apple IDs. How can I move all my purchased (paid-for) apps under only 1 of my Apple IDs?

Long ago I bought several, relatively expensive, apps under a old Apple ID.
I then purchased many more paid-for apps under a new Apple ID.
I was unaware that the purchased apps are tied to the Apple ID which I happen to be logged in with, at the time of the purchase: I thought they'd be tied to my authorised PC(s).
Now I'm absolutely sick of having to constantly switch between IDs, even just to CHECK for updates.
What I want to do is move all the paid-for apps which I bought under the old Apple ID to the new Apple ID. Both ID demonstrably belong to me.
Having all my apps under 1 only Apple ID would allow me to update them easily, and no longer be FORCED to switch IDs all the time.
In short I want to use only 1 Apple ID for the future.
If the Apple Store locks the apps to the Apple ID (as it does) instead than to the authorised PC (as it should do), then it should also PREVENT a user from creating a second Apple ID (at least, from the same iTunes installation on the same PC!), or at the very least display a HUGE warning that any paid-for apps purchased under another, older Apple ID will be unavailable under the new Apple ID! The apple Store, and iTunes, do neither thing,
Then the Apple Store and iTunes should at the very least allow a user to put all apps under the same Apple ID!
After all, the Apple Store and iTunes on my PC and iTunes on my Iphone can all "see" that I own TWO legitimate Apple IDs (with purchases and updates): it must be possible to move these apps from one ID to the another ID, at least once! They're MY OWN purchases, paid: can I manage them a bit easier?
    Marco

No, it seems you don't (want to) understand. I see 2 things very wrong with your explanation.
    1. The move would only need to happen between "accounts" demonstrably and legitimately belonging to the same user. In fact, I'm still using both the old one (for updates only, no new purchases) and the new one (updates and purchases -- actually no morep urchases until Apple solves this). And unless I'm mistaken, I can already have my apps on more than one iDevice at the time: eg. on 1 iPhone and1 iPad. I don't ask for apps to be moved between unrelated accounts: only between accounts belonging to the same "person". And I do not see how changing what is effectively just a "label" embedded in the binary files residing on my hard disk (or in the cloud), which can be verified as legitimately belonging to me thru two ID registered on the same authorised PC could possibly allow anyone to cheat the system. The apps' files have embedded an old label before, and a new label after the operation, both belonging to me, associated to my payment details. That's not rocket science.
In fact, both my Apple ID were at some point linked to the same credit card. And in fact, I only created a second one because at some point I managed to forget my Hotmail EMAIL password, not my Apple STORE password!
The two passwords needn't be the same, adding to the confusion. For months I used that account to buy apps, and never checked the email, since I was not interested in marketing from Apple, and I could see the payments from my credit card statements: that's how I forgot my Hotmail EMAIL password for that Hotmail email address.
Since Microsoft wouldn't allow me to access my Hotmail account anymore (and rightly so, becuase I managed to exhaust all possibilities, and even forgot the security question), and so I could not check my Apple Store emails, I then decided to create a new account, this time with a Live! email address, and this time I used the same password for both the Live! EMAIL and the Apple STORE authentication.
For more than TWO years I used the old Hotmail Apple ID to get updates, without during all that time being able to read the email or access that Hotmail account: this should tell you how stupid this system is! And for the same time, and until last month (I no longer buy anything), I used the new ID for both NEW purchases and their updates.
Now after getting both a new iPhone (only because the old one was unfortunately stolen on my holiday) and a new PC, i NO longer want to be forced to use both IDs, which forces me to constantly switch between them, and also carries the risk that I inadvertently purchase something with the old one, to which EMAIL address I no longer have access: so I can't even check invoices. But most of all, I don't want to be inconvenienced like this by Apple.
Since the Apple ID is such an important concept, forever ID tied to your purchases, it should NOT be an email address, which are disposable by their own nature. When creating it, one is naturally driven to think it'll only be needed to check Apple Store's emails and newsletters and the such. Why should people be forced to FOREVER use an email address, perhaps linked to a job or relationship they had years earlier, to update their purchases?
The thing is, Apple made the Apple IDs as email addresses simply to ensure that as many people as possible can at any time buy as many apps and songs as possible: just create a new Apple ID: after all, it is (seems) just an email address! and you're done. But they DON'T telly you they'll tie FOREVER your purchases to it. So you're reasonably entitled to think they'll tie them to your payments details, until you discover otherwise the hard way.
And since most Apple users feel humbled by Apple (the "genial" idea of calling "Genius" the support guys at the stores, wo usually don't have a clue on anyhting less than trivial, is part of this) and fear of feeling "stupid" for getting wrong soemthing with what are supposed to be the most user-friendly company and products, they will simply buy the apps again under the new ID, bringing more profits to Apple. This also can't be casual.
My apps are available, under both Apple IDs at the same time, to iTunes: be it on my PC on in the iCloud. The same mechanism that physically "embeds" that Apple ID in the app file when I first buy it, can surely be used to change it afterwards. It's just a matter of willing to do so. This content (apps, songs, etc) may be digital (that is, files) rather than traditional (eg. books), but I assure you that the disk blocks taken by the app or song files in the iTunes directory on my PC or in the iCloud are as physical as a book or a mp3 player: they CAN be changed in a perfectly safe and trackable way, without risk of cheating. Ever heard of MAC addresses? Or other unique info that can easily be gathered from the PC's operating system or BIOS? or credit card details, already available?
    2. The policy of inconveniencing (punishing) the huge majority of users (citizens) to prevent a tiny minority from misbehaving can be good for sheep, but not for rational people. It's typical of unimaginative, monopolistic companies (oppressive governments), not of progressive, modern and innovative ones. The cost of protecting their proficts from those who would steal from them is theirs (the company's), not ours (the users'). They should be more creative and inventive, in finding solutions to stop 10 people who would misuse their system, rather than annoying the 10 million who won't. I would never do so (mostly because I thing it's morally wrong, but also because I can't be bothered), but I understand why people invent ways to circumvent this gratuituos, bullish constraints.
Also, CAN'T you REALLY see the difference between these TWO options:
    - allowing a user to change an app's associated account ONCE IN A LIFETIME, even only ONCE per app
    - FORCING a user to switch Apple IDs EVERY TIME (DAY, OR WEEK) FOREVER, to check and/or update
??? Am I talking to a person, or to a robot, or to a undercover Apple employee here?
Both things are possible. The second is more convenient financially for Apple, that's all.
But it's also so clearly unfair to their customers. No more, thanks.
To finish, many if not almost all of the issues in threads like https://discussions.apple.com/message/18954743#18954743 (like husband and wife sharing a PC with two iPhones, or kids' gifts, etc) really boil down to this issue, despite being often complicated by sloppy explanation (when they say "password" , do they mean the Apple ID's or the Email account's?, and so on) and unreasonable requests (like having the same app, only paid once, available under two IDs, even if on the same PC: this is not what I ask, and it's unreasonable) -- and could be solved by the concept of a "master" ID and "secondary" ID: if you read well, the real issue is almost always for everybody having to switch between "old" (or "wife's", "kids'") and new (or "husband's", "dad's") Apple IDs: and this must be done on BOTH the iTunes application on the PC or Mac, and on the devices themselves.

  • ITunes 11.1.2 (integral to Mavericks) no longer allows contacts syncing via USB

Personally, I feel this is morally wrong.  I have no problem with Apple offering the iCloud service, but it's quite another thing to force me to use iCloud for my own info.  Whatever convenience or advantage this is to Apple is easily outweighed by all the downsides.
First and foremost, I have some very sensitive data, like passwords and combinations in some of those contacts and I don't feel comfortable putting that info on Apple's server.  I've heard the counter argument that Apple's server has better protection.  True, but my personal computer isn't nearly as juicy a target as Apple's.  Does nobody remember the instances of hacks into data bases to steal credit card info?
Also, cloud services aren't perfect either.  A friend of mine couldn't find his iPad, so he used the "Find My (iDevice)" service and saw that it was in the neighborhood.  He didn't know it, but his son had left it at a friend's house.  So he sent the command to wipe it.  When he got it back, he synced it with his iCloud data...and lost all his contacts he'd ever collected, not just off his iPad, but off of his iCloud account also!
Finally; I know that the profitability in the hardware hasn't got worse for both PC manufacturers and for Apple also.  So, receiving the revenue from a subscription service must be very apealing.  This feels like a power play to push us one step closer to owning devices that are nothing more than keyboards and screens and to access our OWN data; it will only be housed on the manufacturer's server and will only be available via a subscription service.
I've been so HAPPY with my iMac and our iPhones and was about to upgrade both our phones to the new 5S as well as buying an iPad Air, my first iPad.  I was EXCITED to do so.  Now, I am as demoralized as I was happy to buy those new products.  I'm hoping against hope that Apple will reconsider this move and restore direct syncing of MY data from MY iPhone to MY iMac.  Hoping to have my faith in Apple restored as well.

Correction.  I meant to say the profitability in the hardware HAS got worse for the manufacturers, not 'hasn't'.

  • IPhone 3GS froze during iOS 5.1.1 update - how do I get out of recovery mode without having to restore?

So I tried to update my iPhone 3GS to iOS 5.1.1, like iTunes told me to do, and it froze part way through the installation for a couple of hours.  I tried to "reset" the iPhone by pressing both the home and power buttons simultaneously, but now iTunes tells me my iPhone is in recovery mode.  From my limited knowledge, it seems I need to restore my iPhone, but I don't want to lose anything, like my SMS history.
Is there a way to get out of recovery mode without having to restore?

  • What happened to the concept of customer service?

I have now had two very disturbing experiences with the customer service department.  I have been a loyal customer for years.  I don't appreciate being on hold on and off for over an hour while someone figures out how they can screw me out of services.  My first disappointing call was regarding getting a phone that did not work exchanged or repaired.  I have paid for the insurance on the phone so I didn't think it should be a problem.  Well, after much back in forth with an alleged supervisor the CSR said I could not use the plan I have been paying for.  He said he wanted to help me so he suggested I log onto Verizon where I would find a special going on.  This special was for cell phone coverage, only it was through a company not affiliated with Verizon.  I said that the phone is broken already and there are usually preexisting condition rules with any new plan I may sign up for.  He said that He was the only one that knew the phone was already broken so I just should not even tell them that.  Seriously, I could not believe that a representative of Verizon would suggest I commit an act of fraud.  I still have the broken phone and had to add another plan in order to obtain a phone that works.
Second problem experience happened today.  I noticed that my bill had jumped from $63.96 to a whopping $338.33 for this months bill.  I called customer service.  I'm sick and on a limited income and that is just an outrageous amount for a cell phone.  The CSR went over the bill in detail.  I knew my bill was going up due to adding a new line.  I don't think I should have to pay for a connect fee when I was forced to get a phone that wasn't broken.  Besides all the connect fees and billing me for time that the phone was not even in use, I was also charged for the broken phone that I had suspended the service on until I could get this taken care of or my other plan expired.  I basically feel like I have been taken advantage of by the use of misleading billing methods.  So, one CSR wants me commit fraud, a great family value lesson to teach my son since it was his phone.  The other CSR offered to reduce the bill by $60.00, $20.00 of which was for my inconvenience.  I was on the phone for over an hour.  They don't seem to care about their customers no matter how long you are loyal to them.  Of course, I checked back to see if they even deducted the $60.00 that was promised to me.  Of course not.  I'm more than angry about this.  It's criminal and morally wrong to rip people off for financial gain.  So glad I have recorded these calls since I have had problems with some of their sister companies as well.  If you want to have customers who are happy to support your company, you need to get your heads out of the clouds and reconnect with the people who support your salaries and lavish lifestyles.  I am so disgusted!

  • Unexpected data charges

Last month, after my latest 2-yr contract was up, I spoke with a Verizon Wireless rep (1-800 number) and changed my plan from one with a data package to one that was a basic, 450-minute talk-only plan. I also had my phone number changed. As I liked my old smart phone (Samsung Omnia), I informed the rep I was going to continue using it. He said no problem, changed the number, repeated my wishes to switch to the 450-minute talk plan, quoted me the $39 monthly fee, and said all was good to go. As my contract was up, I was on the month-to-month plan.
However, on my bill today, I noticed that I am being charged for a data plan. As my prevous two-year contract had expired, I was clear with the customer service rep about my intentions, and at no time was informed by him of a potential conflict, I feel this is not only unfair, but perhaps illegal. The rep I talked with today informed me that there is no one who can cancel the charges for the unused and unwanted data plan. I found that highly suspect
I understand the requirement of new smartphones to carry the data plan (their costs are subsidized by the data charges), but never exected there would be a problem using a smart-phone I purchased and paid for, from Verizon two years ago.
Today I deactivated my smartphone and got a cheap, talk-only phone with a revised 2-yr contract, so that fixes future billing issues. However, I am determined to have the previous month's data charges waived as I was not aware they were being assessed. Any idea how I can do this? Thanks.

    ckimmerle wrote:
Nope, nothing was signed. As the 2-yr contract recently expired, we were month-to-month on, from what we agreed on, a voice-only plan.. I've since signed a new 2-yr contract (yesterday) that does spell it all out, but during the billing cycle in question there was only a verbal agreement.
We've been VZW customers for something like eight years with no other issues of any kind, so it's not like I'm some vindictive cry-baby. But, what's right is right.
Yes, the rep told you something wrong, (maybe he didn't realize that since the phone requires a data plan, the system would put it back on.  In a perfect world, Verizon would give you back the money.  However, you have to consider how much your time is worth, this is I assume $30?  So, apart from the feeling that it is morally wrong, decide how much effort to invest in attempting to fix.   And remember Verizon isn't really trying to steal $30 from you and need to be punished, it's just some CSR didn't understand the issues.

  • Search & Rentals

I am having two issues with my recently purchased  Apple 2 and movie rentals. First, I do not seem to be able to search for movies on the Apple TV. When. I go into the Movies section and Search, I start typing something and I see the little spinning wheel in the search bar, but it does not show any results no matter what I enter into the search field. I tried the same in the YouTube section and it works just fine, showing live results on the rights side on the screen. Any suggestions?
Also, I was under the impression that if I rent a movie on the Apple TV I can start watching it on the Apple TV and finish it for instance on my iPad and vise-versa. Although it does not seem to be the case according to a support article. I wanted to use this apparently non-existent feature to by-pass the search problem by searching for a movie on my iPhone or iPad, renting on the mobile device and watching it on the Apple TV but it seems I can only watch on the same device I pay for it on which is a bit weird as I am paying to watch it and use the same Apple ID on all of my devices. Is this technically right (and morally wrong)?
I am using the 2nd gen Apple TV with 4.4.2 (3160).

The search could be an issue with Apple's servers - I assume it uses some Ajax like technology to give suggested results interactively - if Apple's servers are playing up it may not work.
With regard to renting, only rentals made in itunes can be viewed on ipods/iPhjones/ipads and AppleTV - one device at a time.  Rentals made on AppleTV work there and there alone, and generally not on another AppleTV in the house.

  • Out-of-place upgrade going wrong

Trying to work through an upgrade from 11.2.0.1 to 11.2.0.3 on a dev box, prefereably without major downtime, 64-bit Linux. Since I cannot shutdown existing listeners or database, the approach is perhaps a bit non-standard
    <li>I've got the 11.2.0.3 software unzipped</li>
    <li>I've created directories for a new ORACLE_BASE</li>
    <li>I've exported ORACLE_BASE=/new/directory/structure</li>
<li>I've then launched database/runInstaller from the unzipped location and performed a painless software-only installation</li>
I'm now slightly confused about the next bit, bearing in mind I'm trying to do this without any downtime on the existing 11.2.0.1 database.
What I'd like to do is to get a copy of the existing database opened and running from the 11.2.0.3 home, whilst the existing 11.2.0.1 db continues on as it is.
    <li>So I've set a new ORACLE_SID</li>
<li>I've copied across the orapw and init.ora from the old O_H to the new, renaming them appropriately</li>
<li>I've edited the init.ora so that path-specific parameters all now take the new O_H directory structure</li>
<li>I've then put the entire existing database into hot backup mode and copied it to the new O_H structure</li>
Because so little is being done on the original database I appear to have got away with copying online redo logs, because I was able to startup mount; issue lots of 'alter database rename file...' commands so the new file locations are picked up; recover database; alter database open upgrade.
What I am now struggling with is how to actually upgrade the freshly-opened new database. If I run dbua, it says 'database isn't mounted', whether the new db copy is in mount or open upgrade mode. If I run @catupgrd.sql, it seems to complete without a problem, leaving STATUS of V$INSTANCE at OPEN MIGRATE. But when I run the @utlu112s.sql command, I get this:

I think that (partially, as it turns out) de-installing unlicensed components on the original database may have caused this problem.
I tried doing a data pump export of the original database, and it failed with an error I tracked down in Metalink (I'm sorry, I didn't record the specifics). Turned out there were four tables left behind from OWB and a broken package related to Spatial. I dropped those, and the export worked.
But instead of using that export, I tried my hot copy technique again.. and this time it worked.
So I guess the moral of the story is to ensure your source database is 100% functional before you try messing around with any of this stuff.

Have remembered one of the specifics: Metalink 1328829.1 (OLAP removal leaves behind DBMS_CUBE_EXP in an invalid state). There was one other similar issue, but I still don't remember the details on that.

  • Morally what is right?

OK, so the story is simples....
I have been with BT all my life from at the age of about 19 I first needed to have my own phone line, I am now 48. I have been offered all sorts of different deals by competitors, but stuck with BT because of very high reliability and expert engineering when the few faults I have had were rectified quickly and efficiently.
I have been on Broadband for a while and invested in Infinity and BT vision as decided to move away from Sky, though had serious considerations to make change to Sky as BT was same cost for less TV.
I have a rare fault and no phone or broadband. I also have 2 friends asking me about BT Infinity.
i have been in contact with the call centre since the 3 days and have been in my view misled, lied too and not really considered. The operative at the call centre was apologetic, assured me of care and escalation but I have never had one call back. Every day I have rung up and been told call was not loaded, they were digging holes, lots of people affected, an engineer has been allocated etc etc.
So today chasing up I was told due to high demand in the area they are pushing back the call to Wednesday...... Well the first operative has left me a VM as it has been apparently escalated, that was at 11 this morning and still no call, so I am about to ring them back and see when the engineer will arrive. Not much to ask is it?
What I resent is the **bleep** and bull and deliberate misleading, that has really got me cross. I work in a service industry and we don't always get it right but I give the honest answer and expectations, not what people want but they can plan their alternatives. In fact whilst writing this Andy from BT has just been on to say this is being escalated to Open Reach and he will call me back within a working 8 hours...... So the saga persists, but his manager will ring me within 2 hours. I cannot speak to anyone in open reach as he can't it is down to email..
So morally then should I reccomend BT to my friends? On this basis can I say the previously superlative support is worth such a risk?
I have effectively been forced to be at home for several days when I could and indeed should have been at other places on the offchance BT turn up and need access........
Well, when all sorted what sort of compensation should I get, more than the loss of service I venture.
The only plus side is the few telephone canvassers but my elderly parents are feeling a bit unloved.
What really galls me is the misleading statements..........
So much I thought I would post here to see if others have had similar and what happened or they did about it.

So if OpenReach are responsible, then the kind of customer care, interest and support is the same for any other supplier, what advantage does that give BT over the competition........ None I venture, thus my reasoning for staying with BT, the proposal that if things go wrong they can sort out quickly and efficiently are no longer valid, thus I ought not use those assumptions in comparing other providers.
I have just had a very honest conversation with my call handlers boss, he has provided an expectation level that I really don't like but it is honest and sets the level so that at least I can deal with that, which means a call back from them telling me if Open Reach have decided to escalate the resolution and get here earlier than Wednesday.
I truly suspect that the date of Wednesday, the 3rd date provided by them is likely to be the case, showing in truth that no escalation took place and that in real terms they have put the call back twice. This is all despite being told the call has been escalated on 5 occasions, holes were being dug, engineers have been tasked, someone is on the case etc etc.
It still says on the website today at 17:00.
Shoddy, appalling and unlikely to resolve me keeping the account for much longer if the competition gets more boxes ticked in terms of price and provision. I daresay from a contractual point of view that I could walk away without penalties as a judge is hardly going to say that I was being provided with an appropriate service.
Open Reach left a manhole cover off which I hit on the way home from shift at 3 in the morning too, BT coffed up for that, it feels like I am heading towards it again with some sense of inevitability........
But I can hardly reccomend the service now can I, though I can say that the likely response to faults would be no worse with BT than anyother provider, but it wont be better......... will it?

  • Vim bash syntax wrong?

Vim is wrongly highlighting the closing parenthesis in my shell scripting files.
In other words, it looks like the syntax is wrong (maybe it is).
    A picture would illustrate better.
    http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/56 … error.png/
I only have the default sh.vim that comes with gvim 7.3 default
package in arch. Nothing in ~/.vim/syntax or ~/.vim/after/syntax.
Could someone verify if the same happens in your systems. The system
    is fully up to date.
    Thanks in advance.

I've noticed various syntax coloring errors in bash scripts lately.
One of the main ones is that the closing parenthesis of an array is highlighted red, e.g.:
    SUBRANGE=(${RANGE[@]})
Another consistent problem is the coloring of file descriptors.
In my first function, the string >&2 is colored completely yellow, but in subsequent functions the same string has a magenta 2.
Furthermore, some string redirects are colored wrong, the final tac being off-colored, e.g.:
    if $(grep -q "[^[:digit:]:-]" <<< "$1")
There are often errors in quote delimiting too, e.g. after the following line, the entire file is colored as if it is a string literal:
    if $(amixer | grep -A 4 \'$SDEVICE\' | awk {'print $6'} | grep -q "\[off\]")
Also, process substitution looks funny in that the tic is a different color than the parentheses, though that's not specifically incorrect.
I guess the moral of the story is I should try to fix this.
These all work if you use a bash syntax file instead of sh.
    I have
    let g:is_bash=1
    in my vimrc already.

  • Macbook4,1 10.6.8 and firmware update - what went wrong?

Macbook 4,1 2008 2.4Ghz (not unibody). I recently reformatted my hard drive and reinstalled 10.6 from the Retail DVD and all seemed to go well. The MB was working fine up to that point. I then set up the MB (network, date and time, etc.) and repaired permissions.
I then checked Software Update and downloaded and installed the recommended updates to 10.6.8.
Again, all seemed to go fine. System booted and I repaired Permissions again. I went to the Apple web site, a couple of other web sites, and Software Update found another update to install: Firmware. Though I don't remember what version.
I clicked OK and it installed.
Upon reboot, it seemed to install okay.
But then I left the Macbook and it went into Sleep.
I didn't come back to it again until the next day.
When I pressed a key to wake it, I got what I now know is the screen that appears after you wake it from SAFE SLEEP. As per this Apple KB article: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1757.
And this is where the problems started.
After the MB woke to the Safe Sleep screen, which shows the desktop a little "out of focus", the progress bars started filling in from left to right, BUT before they completed, the screen went BLACK.
And it has had a problem with black screen ever since. I can boot the MB from internal or external HD or from DVD, and it seems to boot fine. Boot chime, Apple logo, spinning wheel, then at the point where it pauses, blue screen, then goes to desktop, instead the screen goes black.
It finishes booting, but seems to go into Sleep.
I can wake it by pressing a key, but the screen either comes on and goes black again after 10 seconds, or I get the Safe Sleep wake screen, and then it goes black after 10 seconds.
And at boot or when waking the MB, the front LED flashes 5 times. There are no error beeps.
I've tried changing RAM, but problems remain.
So what's all this? Any ideas?
The display doesn't seem dead, as it works to boot and wake. The MB works fine with external monitor.
It's weird, but I can't think of anything apart from the Firmware update. The problems started right after installing it.
Unfortunately, this model of Macbook doesn't have a Firmware Restoration image to download and burn to CD. It is the ONLY Mac at this point that doesn't have this!
I called Apple support and even bought the 49 Euro Pay Per Incident service, which proved to be the same as throwing 49 Euro out the window. The only "technical" support they provided was to Reset the SMC, which you can find out about FOR FREE at the Apple website. And which I'd done anyway. I'd also reinstalled the MacOS. Don't want to beef too much, but sheesh, you've already got a Macbook that might need costly repairs, and they make you pay 49 Euro BEFORE they even ask you about the problem and what you've done to try to solve it. I'm tempted to say "ripoff". I mean, if all they can offer you is the advice to reset the SMC - which Apple offers for free at their website - then that's pretty poor service for 49 Euro, to say the least.
Apart from the wasted 49 Euro, I'm pretty peeved about the Firmware update (or so it seems) wrecking a perfectly working 2008 Macbook. I don't know how to convince Apple of this, but I'm certainly going to try.

    Thanks for the reply.
Re. the Displays setting, the Macbook display isn't recognized and mirroring isn't an available option.
I've scoured the net and the idea of replacing the PRAM battery may be something to try. I read a post by a guy with a Macbook logic board screwed up by a Firmware update, which he solved by replacing the PRAM battery, as when you disconnect it you reset the logic board.
    Which capacitor?
No luck so far with talking to Apple. I will try to get hold of someone a little more tech savvy and/or in a position of authority, as it seems that the Firmware is the culprit. Obviously a million other things could go wrong with a Macbook, but given the timing here it looks like the Firmware. Firmware updates can and occasionally do screw up a computer, as most manufacturers will warn you before you apply the update: PC makers, printer makers, etc. And they probably warn you that it's all your responsibility if anything goes wrong. But re. the Apple Firmware update:
    1) it came thru Software Update
    2) there was no warning
    3) to make things worse, there's no Firmware Restoration image that I can burn to a CD to reflash the logic board: this is the only Apple computer that doesn't have a Firmware Restoration option
I'll try to get thru to a manager and convince him/her that the firmware may have been the cause.
Do you think an authorized Apple tech might have access to some way to do a firmware restoration? Something not avaiable to mere mortals? Because if not, the only solution looks like a new logic board.

  • OEPE causes Eclipse Kepler to start with wrong workspace, overrides Eclipse's workspace configuration

I'm a new OEPE user, and found that after installing it, Eclipse (Kepler) now starts up with the wrong workspace every time. I have to explicitly do File > Switch Workspace... to get Eclipse to restart with the correct workspace. Also, the workspace I want to use is the only one listed in the Workspaces preferences panel (Window > Preferences > General > Startup and Shutdown > Workspaces). So I can't figure out why Eclipse is using the wrong workspace, and why it's even finding this wrong one.
I found that many other users of OEPE with Kepler are having this same problem:
Eclipse Community Forums: Eclipse Platform &amp;raquo; Kepler: On start up, I no longer get prompted for workspace locat…
And this sounds curiously like this old problem reported right here on the OTN Community site:
    https://forums.oracle.com/thread/2191740
Any suggestions for how to get around this? I assume this is a bug, but don't know the correct process for reporting OEPE bugs.

    Hi.
I suspect that some action by the OEPE code somehow modifies the OSGi Cache so that it no longer asks you what workspace you'd like to use (and forces usage of the workspace in top user directory.)  I found that if you put in "-clean" in your eclipse.ini, then you get asked what workspace you'd like to use.  This flag clears out the OSGi cache (hence my theory that it is this cache that is messed up)
That said, there are arguments for not doing this all the time.  See this discussion: java - How to run eclipse in clean mode? and what happens if we do so? - Stack Overflow
Finally, I suspect you have another workspace on your system now.  Presuming you are on a PC, go to your user dir - I'd wager there is a "workspace" dir there now.  That is where OEPE wants to work.
    Good Luck!
OEPE should be able to work with any workspace; it has in the past!  If a specific workspace is required with this release, that is a step backward in my opinion.  That said, if that is the direction of the product, so be it.  I find it hard to believe that is the direction of the product, however!

  • Flash 12.0.0.77 plugin installs to wrong folder

    In Vista x64, using either Firefox 28 or Firefox 24.4 ESR, the plugin installer (one downloaded from Adobe distribution) installs the 32 bit .dll file to \system32\macromedia\flash\ folder;
installs the 64 bit .dll to:  \sysWOW64\macromedia\flash\  folder.  So, they're exacly reversed.
I uninstalled it completely - went well.  Then removed 1 remaining file in one of the above paths, then reinstalled.  Did the same thing.
Before I did all this - I was *very sporadically* seeing the FlashPlayerPlugin_12_0_0_77.exe file, running (kinda "sitting") in background, in task manager.  It never came to foreground w/ a UI, asking for anything.  Couldn't figure out what it was, until started looking in the installation folders.
That's what lead to discovery the files were in wrong folders.
    Anyone heard of this?
BTW, "Nayana" of Adobe Support chat, is a few bricks shy of a load.  Or I am.  I couldn't create an acct for forums.  She kept saying, you don't need an acct - "just post your question.  Other people will answer it."

EDIT:  Seems there's no error in Flash installing to wrong folders, only error in my brain.  Why didn't someone stop me from embarrassing myself?
System32 (in a 64 bit OS / architecture) is for 64 bit drivers, files; SysWOW64 is for 32 bit apps running in 64 bit OS.
    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/WoW64
WoW64 (Windows 32-bit on Windows 64-bit) is a subsystem of the Windows operating system capable of running 32-bit applications and is included on all 64-bit versions of Windows
    Also, http://www.samlogic.net/articles/32-64-bit-windows-folder-x86-syswow64.htm (section on SysWoW64)
    End Edit.
Thanks for info on attaching images.  A bit different than most forums.  There's no "preview post" before submitting?
Screenshots of the 2 flash folder contents.
NOTE:  I attached full FlashInstall.log earlier.  I opened the 1.25 MB (text) file in an editor - copied contents to clipboard > paste to forum reply screen.  Immediately locked up Firefox like a big dog.  Couldn't perform any functions in Fx - not even reload or close browser.  At same time, Fx memory use was continually climbing; to nearly 2 GB when I killed it.  Won't make that mistake again.
Been many yrs since Fx locked up, doing anything.  That aside, Adobe is definitely "different" than most forums.  Almost like a person w/ no $ to use one of the many forum softwares available.
