A Problem for the Ages...

OK. I'm incredibly frustrated right now, and am facing the damndest computer problem I have ever seen in my entire life. Some people thrive when confronted by incredibly difficult problems, I just get really pissed off because my computer ought to behave, and it isn't. So here is my LONG story, and I hope there  people here who thrive on solving bizarre, inexplicable PC problems:
Two weeks ago, my computer turned itself off in the middle of the night. It was on and fine when I went into bed; when I woke up it was off. I turned it on, and just before it reaches the "Windows XP" loading banner, it restarts itself. This is repeated every time.
When I try using Safe Mode (I tried all Safe Modes, normal, last known good, networking, command prompt, etc) the same damn thing happens. It starts loading device drivers, gets to "/DRIVERS/MUP.SYS" and restarts. (I later copied MUP.SYS from my dad's XP Pro computer to my hard drive, but problem persists)
I tried booting off the Windows XP boot cd. It hangs when it's at the blue screen that reads "Setup is starting Windows..." every time.
So I then began removing peripherals. I tried just one hard drive, my PCI video card (recently sold my AGP card and was working with an old PCI Voodoo3), and my one stick of PC3200 RAM. Same thing.
I changed the RAM, using a PC2700 stick. Same thing. I removed the hard drive so that only my CD-ROM was connected to the motherboard. I booted off the CD, it STILL freezes at that screen (see above).
I took my hard drive and placed it in another computer. It booted fine, up to the Windows Log-in screen (I did not log in because I did not want Windows to start modifying itself according to the other computer's hardware).
So I tried different video cards, AGP and PCI. Same deal. One strange thing that happens is that sometimes, when I try to start the computer, it gives me one long beep, pauses a few seconds, and repeats the beep again and again. There is no POST code consisting of one repeated, long beep, not according to Phoenix AwardBIOS' website (they make my BIOS). I have to turn the machine on and off a few times, and then it starts up fine. Sometimes this doesn't happen at all and it boots up fine.
Finally I RMA'd my motherboard. The new motherboard came in today. I hooked her all up, and guess what? SAME PROBLEM!!! Obviously the motherboard is not at issue here.
Again, the motherboard in it right now is A NEW ONE that has just been RMA'd from MSI. It shows some wear so it clearly is refurbished, but the BIOS has just been flashed with the latest revision, etc., and they have tested it and everything so I think the possibility of a BIOS reflash being the solution is even more remote than overheating.
I tried a second PSU. No dice.
One more thing of note: my C:\ is an NTFS drive. A normal bootdisk can't access it, so it certainly can't FDISK or CHKDSK or anything else to it. I have tried to find a way to create an NTFS-compatible bootdisk (even followed instructions on Microsoft's site) and they don't allow me commandprompt-level access to the NTFS drive.
In that vein I will also point out that I don;t think it's the hard drive. I booted my hard drive in another machine and it was fine; I then took another machine's hard drive and put it in mine, and had the same problem.
I'm completely at my wit's end here. Again the other damning thing, which I mentioned above, is the spontaneous tendency of the motherboard to beep. A single, long, loud beep, repeated consistently on boot, and no video being shown on the monitor. I reboot a few times, same thing, reboot again, it works fine. Why? ? This has happened on BOTH motherboards, my original and this new, RMA'd motherboard (same model of course).
At this point I am at my wit's end. Anyone got any ideas???

Ok.  Relax.  Take a deep breath and avoid beeing near any mace; who knows it could be found in your case by "accident".
What I'm about to say is REALLY really basic.  Even dumb.
Next time you have such a problem, try to go for the obvious first;  Check your CPU fan.  Saved me a few hours of scratching alot of times.  Test your ram with memtest86+ http://www.memtest.org without any HD in.
Next, check for the latest BIOS in.  Now if everything is cool there, it MUST be your software that has a problem.   XP often boot differently when on another system, be careful.
I'd look into a nice backup/format XP thing.  Takes some time, but might erraticate the suffering.  Anyways, keep me posted.

Sorry. We can't help you. It's no longer an iPhone. Apple won't touch it.
Take it to whoever replaced the screen and see if they can help you.
iPhones are not user servicable and Apple does not sell iPhone parts at all. I'd be surprised if you were actually able to back it up at this point. It sounds like it's completely borked.

Wow, Karan Taneja, you've just embarrassed yourself on a worldwide support forum.  Not only is your post ridiculous and completely inappropriate for a technical support forum, but it also shows your ignorance as to whom you think the audience is.  Apple is not here.  It's users, like you.
If you would have spent half the time actually reading the Terms of Use of this forum that YOU agreed to by signing up to post, as you did composing that usesless, inappropriate post, you (and the rest of us on this forum) would have been much better off.

  • Apple Outreach for the Aging Community?

    Hello,
My mother in law is an intellectually active 80 year old who is, although sharp and an avid reader, extremely intimidated by technology.
My wife and I are concerned that she is becoming increasingly isolated by her age, the demands of caring for her husband, an the challenges
    of getting around.
We think that getting her on line might significantly enrich and improve the quality of her life, as well as the life of her husband, but she has rebuffed our efforts to get her on line because the interfaces scare her, and I suspect that she doesn't want to be made to feel foolish.
Apple certainly was successful with their college and high school outreach program to get young people accustomed to the Apple environment, and has been successful at marketing Apple products as being more intuitive than their competitors.
My mother in law and her husband live by themselves a considerable distance from any family, so I was wondering whether Apple or any of the Apple Communities have ever mounted a geriatric outreach effort to introduce aging people to the Apple internet and communications environment.  If so, I would appreciate any information that anyone could offer in this regard.  I would appreciate any information that anyone might be able to offer regarding any similar internet/computer outreach programs for the aging or geriatric communities offered by educational or research institutions, or social service organizations.
I submit this query to the iPad support community, as I thought that iPad might be a logical hardware platform for aging people due to its light weight, but I am open to other suggestions.
    Thanking you in advance,
    Charlie

Those are big questions, from the specific to  univeral.
    1. Trying to hook someone up to technology who is 80 and is [still] intimidated by consumer computer technology... remember that the technology has been around since that person was in her 40s so there was never sufficient motivation to get her started.
You might take an activity she enjoys daily,  solitaire or crosswords can be done in a different and perhaps more convenient form.   If she is a reader, show her a Kindle or iPad reader app. Then feed her other stuff. Everyone here will have different  suggestions to hook someone.
The trick is getting her motivated to adopt it herself: "what's in it for me?" * is her unspoken question and will be your guiding light.
    2. Regarding geriatric outreach, try searching for government or university sites regarding access to senior citizens. e.g.
"senior citizens"  "internet access"  ipad site:gov or
"senior citizens"  "internet access"  health site:gov
"senior citizens"  "internet access"  Kindle readers site:gov
Or do same for state or county or government library programs. Libraries have preached and practiced community outreach for years.  Best wishes.
"what's in it for me?" is also the question on the part of tech industry and your "geriatrics" audience.
Answer that and you will have built a better mousetrap.

  • Somehow I have clicked on an install app-and I don't want it-it has started to download-is there a chance of a refund or credit? as it isn't even suitable for the age of my children.

I recently purchased an app and clicked on another to have alook and it appears I have bought it....it is $20.99 and I don't want it as its not age appropriate for my kids. I have stopped the download for now...but is it possible not to purchase it or at least change it for an age appropriate game.

    Hello Beck1717
All sales are final for as you know, there is no way to return them.   However, on
the receipt you will find an invitation to report a problem.   Report the situation as your problem and hope for a sympathetic hearing.   They are understanding for genuine errors.

A dynamic type conflict occurred during reference assignment.
    What happened?
    Error in ABAP application program.
The current ABAP program "CL_EX_DOCUMENT_MAIN02=========CP" had to be
    terminated because one of the
    statements could not be executed.
This is probably due to an error in the ABAP program.
    What can you do?
Print out the error message (using the "Print" function)
and make a note of the actions and input that caused the
    error.
To resolve the problem, contact your SAP system administrator.
You can use transaction ST22 (ABAP Dump Analysis) to view and administer
termination messages, especially those beyond their normal deletion
    date.
is especially useful if you want to keep a particular message.

caught nor passed along using a RAISING clause, in the procedure
    "IF_EX_DOCUMENT_MAIN02~D100_BEFORE_PAI" "(METHOD)"
Since the caller of the procedure could not have expected this exception
to occur, the running program was terminated.
The reason for the exception is:
A 'CAST' operation ('?=' or 'MOVE ?TO') tried to assign an object or
interface variable to a reference variable.
However, the contents of the source variable do not fit in the target.

    How to correct the error
If the error occurred in one of your own programs or in an SAP program
that you modified, try to correct it yourself.
You may able to find an interim solution to the problem
in the SAP note system. If you have access to the note system yourself,
    use the following search criteria:
    "MOVE_CAST_ERROR" CX_SY_MOVE_CAST_ERRORC
    "CL_EX_DOCUMENT_MAIN02=========CP" or "CL_EX_DOCUMENT_MAIN02=========CM007"
    "IF_EX_DOCUMENT_MAIN02~D100_BEFORE_PAI"
If you cannot solve the problem yourself and you wish to send
an error message to SAP, include the following documents:
    1. A printout of the problem description (short dump)
To obtain this, select in the current display "System->List->
    Save->Local File (unconverted)".
    2. A suitable printout of the system log
To obtain this, call the system log through transaction SM21.
Limit the time interval to 10 minutes before and 5 minutes
after the short dump. In the display, then select the function
    "System->List->Save->Local File (unconverted)".
    3. If the programs are your own programs or modified SAP programs,
    supply the source code.
To do this, select the Editor function "Further Utilities->
    Upload/Download->Download".
    4. Details regarding the conditions under which the error occurred
or which actions and input led to the error.
The exception must either be prevented, caught within the procedure
    "IF_EX_DOCUMENT_MAIN02~D100_BEFORE_PAI"
"(METHOD)", or declared in the procedure's RAISING clause.
To prevent the exception, note the following:

  • Page Numbering for the aging report

    Hi,
Does any one know how I can achieve the following:
For the customer ageing report we need to print all customer statements at once. On our print layout we currently use the following CurrentPage()/TotalPages() formula fields to dispaly the page number. The result we get is 1/10, 2/10, 3/10....etc.
We actually need the following, for total 10 pages statement would like to display the page number as follows:
    Customer A: 1/1
    Customer B: 1/3, 2/3, 3/3
    Customer C: 1/1
    Customer D: 1/5, 2/5, 3/5, 4/5, 5/5
Does anyone know how to achieve the above for continuous print?
Your assistance in this matter is highly appreciated.
    BR,
    Jimmy

    Hi,
You are trying to print the detailed aging report. Right?
It seems that there is no way of "splitting" the page numbers within a collection report.
The system could not count the pages for EACH customer. The total number per pages will be per whole document, and cannot be per business partner within the same document when using the formula currentpage().

  • ISE 1.1.3 provisioning problem for the first DOT1x connection

    Hello all,
I am wondering how a wired dot1x client can get the NAC agent downloaded for its very first connection from ISE ?
Should the Agent be installed before the first connection ?
I'have set up ISE 1.1.3 for provisioning (files have been downloaded from cisco website) (upgrade mandatory)
I have an AuthZ rule for a correct posture assessment
    and
another AuthZ rule for an unknown posture assessment that triggers a posture remediation (file download)
    (in that order)
NAC agent is properly configured ( FQDN...), the users gets and nothing happen !
    no NAC upgrade
    no NAC assessment.
    Any idea ?
Does it take a while for the new agent to be downloaded ?
    Best regards.
    V.

In order to troubleshoot the NAC agent problem, we need to check  couples of things.like
1.)Ensure that the discovery host address on the Cisco NAC agent or  Mac OS X agent is pointing to the Cisco ISE FQDN. (Right-click on the  NAC agent icon,
choose Properties, and check the discovery host.)
2.) Ensure that the access switch allows Swiss communication between  Cisco ISE and the end client machine. Limited access ACL applied for the  session should allow Swiss ports:
permit tcp any host 80.0.80.2 eq 8905 --> This is for posture
communication between NAC agent and ISE (Swiss ports)
permit udp any host 80.0.80.2 eq 8905 --> This is for posture
communication between NAC agent and ISE (Swiss ports)
    deny ip any any
3.)If the agent login dialog still does not appear, it could be a  certificate issue. Ensure that the certificate that is used for Swiss  communication on the end client is in the Cisco ISE certificate trusted  list.
4.) Ensure that the default gateway is reachable from the client  machine.
As per your confirmation, I am going to close the case for this specific  inquiry. We strive to provide you with excellent service. Please feel  free to reach out to me or any member of the SAC team if we can be of  any further assistance or if you have any other related questions in the  future. We value your input and look forward to serving you moving  forward.

  • Does any one know about the small Hardrive that "The Power Company" is producing, sponsored by Indiegogo, for small Apple mobile devices (iPhones, iPods, etc,).  Do they work or cause problems for the device or iCloud storage?

Does any one about the small hard drive that "the Power Company" is bringing out as a crowdsourced project by Indiegogo?  Does it work, does it cause problems for IOS, iPOD Touch or iCloud?

I have not heard that mentioned here before. What does the Indiegogo page say?

  • Hard drive beachball problem for the 17"

Ok, so I know that there is already a few posts about this issue, (including the very large 96 page one) but I wanted to start a post for those of us with a 17" MBP that are having the same issues.
I was on the phone to a senior technician at Apple (Australia) today for about 2 hours trying to sort out this problem. Firstly he was a bit hazy about the issue to begin with assuming it was a RAM paging issue. Seriously, this thing has 4gb of ram, I think you would have to running so much stuff at once for it to legitimately run out of ram. I'm a web developer/designer so I can push the machine reasonable hard sometimes but I get the beachballs even when I only have safari and mail open. This is the fastest (stock) laptop Apple have ever produced, surely it can handle a bit of stick.
So I suggested it could be the hard drive/firmware etc and mentioned about the large amount of people on here with the exact same issue. After looking into some internal documentation he noted that there was indeed similar problems happening around the place but he seemed convinced that this only applied to 13" and 15" models and that the 17" never got the 1.7 firmware update.
After looking at the firmware page: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1237 it seems maybe he's right. I can't see my boot ROM version there anywhere (MBP52.008E.B05) The mid 2009 model 17" isn't on that list.
Whilst my friend at Apple is reasonably sure that my issue is software related and wants me to watch the console when Im having the freezing, I'm positive that I'm having the exact same problem as the 13 and 15s.
Can other people with 17" MBP that are having the same issue please post here so that we can begin to build a case for Apple to acknowledge the problem for our model too? Please add whether you have installed a 3rd party hdd or whether you are having the problem despite only having the stock hdd like me.
    Thanks guys.

soniktrooth, count me in. I am experiencing the same problem myself - I just recently posted over in the mega forum here: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=10222616#10222616
There is a chance that the hard disk could be at fault I guess, but the symptoms of this problem for me are remarkably similar to what I've read in the 96 page post, and on the macrumors forums. To summarise:
    * the problem usually begins when I'm playing iTunes all day, and then I'll go to save something, say in TextMate, and then iTunes stops playing.
    * Any app you then try to switch to while the freeze is there will then just beachball itself.
    * Like you, I know this is something out of the ordinary, since iTunes rarely stops playing music, and hardly ever did on my 4 year old G5.
    * I can make the problem go away by restarting and zapping the PRAM. All day today my computer has been fine, but I suspect that sometime tomorrow it'll probably start all over again.
    * My drive is a factory Hitachi 5400 RPM drive... what do you have?
    * My boot ROM version is the same as yours too.
    * I have 8GB of RAM in this machine, so I'm pretty **** sure it's NOT a paging issue for me. paging issues never last 20-30 seconds though, that's absurd if anyone claims that is the cause... also, the hard disk doesn't really crank noticeably while the freeze is there.
I'm wondering if there was some sort of revision too for this model that may be causing this. Seems unlikely that Apple would have changed the motherboard between the january model and this one, but I'm not sure if this is absolutely confirmed...

  • Apple, please fix your connectivity problem for the iPad Air 2! Your OS 8.2 did nothing to fix this!! Very frustrating to not be able to connect to wifi some days!

can someone from apple please address the wifi connectivity problems with the iPad Air 2??

thank you for responding. My specific wifi issue is that my connection will disconnect then reconnect in a matter of minutes of each other. After an hour of this back and forth dance of connections it finally stays disconnected. I can go two weeks without  this issue then it will start up again for a day or 2. I have done all the basic troubleshooting.. Including checking and restarting my modem and router. Our iPad mini does not have these issues. None of our laptops/iPhones or xbox have connectivity issues. I have found many other iPad Air 2 users complaining of the same iconnection problems on various blogs. One blog had even discussed the ios update and how they were surprised it did not include a bug fix for this connectivity problem.

  • Spotify is a problem for the Mac OSX update Yosemite 10.10

    Hello,
When i downloaded the new update for the Mac: OSX Yosemite 10.10 - my macbook could'nt be shut down anymore.
I've called the Apple helpdesk and we both tried to figure out what was causing this problem. After some tests it seemed that Spotify was the problem of all this. (Something that is called Spotify manager? was failing with the start up of my Mac).
So i hope this problem can be fixed, because i had to delete Spotify for that my Macbook could work normally again.
And it's ashame, because i can't use Spotify anymore now.
I hope that this will be fixed, so i can enjoy music again.

Same here, tried to install first time on 10.10.4, gets a black screen and can't quit app. Looks like this app is not compatible with OSX 10.10 That's awesome, how do you expect Mac users to stick with your company when there is an alternative for the same price. Even more so when your app does not even run properly on OSX updates. Get it fixed, fast or I'm leaving. I'm a premium user, not a freebee.

  • A problem for the picture control .

    Hello,
There is such a question :
When loading a picture into a picture indicator , I can pop up a dialog and have the user to assign some property values for the picture , the application then saves the values to a file . I believe I can recover graphics information through reading the file , but how to create such a mechanism which can assign or associate a data type (e.g. a Boolean value) as the user specified to a picture ? Of course , in edit status , a control can be customized and replaced by a picture sign , but I need to realize this when the application is running . Thanks .

Here is a VI-in-progress drawig some components of our system.  I will post shape subVI's in subsequent replies.
This VI simply generates random numbers and colors shapes
accordingly.  Therefore, separate shapes in the same picture
indicator are individual indicators.  What I am aiming to do is
use event structures to make individual shapes in the single picture
indicator controls as well as indicators (i.e. On mouse over circle,
open "plotpressure.vi", on mouse click on diamond, send 5 volts to
    channel AO 21, PXI 6528).
I have read some threads indicating the need for tedious locating of
different regions in the picture indicator for event programming, but I
have not gotten that far yet.  I am still designing a picture
    indicator with individual indicators.

The main VI is the "Multiple Shapes Example.vi"
It calls "Draw LE ESA.vi" and "(XY)r to 4s square.vi"  among others.  I will post the others subsequently.

My sister has a G4 350 with a DSL connection. Not the fastest, but I believe it's about 784 or close. She's running Tiger. When she first connects to me, she's got about 15-18 FPS, but within seconds she slows to a screeching halt to 2fps or less. I
