  • Questions about keyword hierarchy

I'm in the process of designing and building a keyword hierarchy for LR3.5, and I'm at a loss to understand a couple of things.
In the process of deciding how to build this, I've looked at a number of hierarchies people have posted to the web. One thing I've noted is that people sometimes have the same word in multiple hierarchies, and sometimes the same word as both a regular entry and as a synonym.  For example:
    Architecture
          Building
              Church
                      {Cathedral}
              Cathedral
              Skyscraper.....
    Cities
          Building
          Cathedral....
So what happens if I use the keyword building?
I *think* what will happen is that LR gives me a choice of selecting Building>Architecture OR Building>Cities.  Is that correct?   Is there a way to get Building, Cities AND Architecture? What happens if I select Cities?  Do I get ONLY cities, and none of the lower level keywords?
And I'm at a total loss about synonyms. If, while applying keywords to an image, I select the synonym {Cathedral}, under Architecture, what keyword(s) get assigned to the image?  What if I select Church?  And what if I select Cathedral under Cities?
    Many thanks.

    Thanks web-weaver.
I posted basically the same question in a couple of other places, and got conflicting answers. And the information I found on web searches tended to explain HOW to set up a hierarchy, but not how it really worked, and information on synonyms is especially limited, and often conflicting. So I did some tests.  So as to not use any words that were already in my keyword list, I built a simple hierarchy of words not currently in use:
    Colors
        Blue
            {Cyan}
            {Azure}
        Red
            Pink
                            Salmon
            Rose
        Green
            {BRG}
            {Emerald}
        Cyan
        Orange
    Fruit
        Orange
        Apple
(I actually had a couple of other trees, but this is enough to demonstrate how they actually work.)
And it turns out synonyms don't work quite like I expected them to, and are, honestly, so limited I question their value.
Test1:  Tag a photo with the keyword Cyan. Only Cyan gets applied to the metadata, not any of the words associated with it (Blue, Colors, Azure). Searching, I can find the image by searching on Cyan, or Colors. But NOT by searching on Blue.
Test2: Tag a photo with the keyword Blue. Only Blue gets applied to the metadata, not Cyan, or Azure. When searching, I can find it by searching on Blue, or any of it's synonyms (Cyan, Azure), or Colors.
(I had expected synonyms to work the other way, I think. So that if I searched on Blue I'd get all images tagged with Blue, but also those tagged with Azure and Cyan. )
Test3:  Tag one photo with Cyan, and another with Blue. Searching with Cyan gets me both images, as does searching with Colors. Searching on Blue gets me only the image tagged with Blue.
Test 4: Tag a photo with the word Colors (and nothing else). I find it by searching ONLY on colors, not Blue, Cyan, or Azure.
Test 5:  Tag a photo with the word Red (and nothing else). I find it by searching on Red, or Colors, but not Pink or Rose.
Test 6:  Tag a photo with the word Pink (and nothing else). I find it by searching on Pink, Red or Colors, but not Salmon.
Test 7: Tag one photo with Orange->Color, and a second image with Orange->Fruit (this nomenclature seems backwards to me, btw.  It's really Fruit-Orange and Color-Orange, but whatever...) Searching on Orange finds both images. Searching on Color finds only one, searching on Fruit finds only the other.
Synonyms affect only search, and not tagging (assignment). Searching on a term that is a synonym will find images tagged with the main word. (e.g., search on Azure and you'll find Blue, but not Colors).
On another site someone replied that when you search you'll find "any image which bears that keyword or any keyword BELOW it in the hierarchy." That's backwards, at least as I understand the word "above.". You'll actually find images using the keyword, it's alias, or any word ABOVE it in the hierarchy. So if an image is tagged with Red, you can find it by searching on Red or Colors, but not Pink. If the image is tagged with pink, you can find it with Colors, Red or Pink, but not Salmon.
The worst limitation of using synonyms is that when you're tagging an image, LR3 isn't smart enough to know the synonyms exist. So if I tag an image with the word Azure, LR3 doesn't substitute Blue, or use the synonym where it already exists in the hierarchy.  Instead, creates a new, top level entry named Azure, not tied in any way to the alias or the "Colors" tree.
It seems like it would be useful to be able to enter Blue as a search term and find any images tagged with Azure and Cyan. Or enter Red as a search term and find Pink and Rose, too. The way it's implemented now forces you to enter the term you're most likely to use (Blue, for example) at the bottom of the hierarchy, and the least used words above. Or to use synonyms, and hope you never get confused an enter a synonym as a keyword instead of the word it refers to.
It seems to me it's more useful to just use Azure as another keyword beneath (or maybe above) Blue in the hierarchy. At least that way if I tag an image with Azure, I'm not creating a new entry in the Keyword list. I'm not sure I see much value in synonyms as they're currently implemented, but if someone has some examples of how synonyms benefit them I'd be delighted to see them.
Hopefully this information will be of use to someone.

  • Odd question about a replacement keyboard for HP pavilion G71326DX

I have a G7 1326DX that needs a replacement keyboard. However A frind of mine recently purchased a G72233cl and I noticed that the keyboards were basically the same, however his had a design that I like much better (Key types). My question is, Can I purchase a Replacement keyboard for the G72233cl and install that keyboard into my G71326DX. I have looked into the connection interface, as well as lined up the notches around the edges of the keyboard with pictures of the replacement keyboards, However I want to make sure it will work correctly before I make my Purchase. Any help would be very much appreciated. Thanks.
    Marvin Parnell

    Hello MPnarnell,
The keyboard on your G7-1326dx needs to be replaced, but you want to use a keyboard for a G7-2233cl, is that correct? I will try to help you .
Comparing the keyboard section of the manuals the part number for the keyboard you want to you use doesn’t show in the G7-1326dx list of compatible keyboards. The reason being probably is because it has never been fully tested.
Now both computers are G7’s but they are 2 totally different series of G7’s so the motherboards are probably different as well. This is one of those issues where you would have to  test it out and see, I don’t believe it will work but I could be wrong. Here is the part number for the keyboard that came on the G7-2233cl. (699146-001)
If you decided to go ahead and try to change it be sure to check for a BIOS update before doing so.
Please respond back at your earliest convenience.

  • Question about battery replacement please

I have a B575 laptop.  I'm looking to replace the battery.  The question I have, the battery that came with the computer is rated at 10.8v.  The replacements I've seen are rated at 11.1v.  Will the voltage difference be harmful to my computer or shorten the life of the new battery, or is it a marketing gimmick where all batteries have an actual rating that varies slightly.
    Please advise ASAP.
    Thanks.

    hi JustMeee,
    Welcome to the Lenovo Forums.
In replacing the battery, it is ideal that you get a:
    - battery with the same rated voltage (this is the specific voltage measurement at which the laptop can start functioning)
    - battery with a lenovo FRU on it (this is to prevent any "unauthorized battery" error)
    From this item,
There are two Voltage definitions: rated Voltage and maximum Voltage. The rated Voltage is the number of Volts required by the appliance in which the appliance is used. The maximum Voltage is the number of Volts provided by the battery when fully charged.
It's possible that the 11.1v replacement batteries that you saw is the maxmum voltage - which is ok and will not harm the battery nor the system but if this is the rated voltage, I recommend you stay away as it may do the opposite.

  • A question about keyword tags

Is it possible in settings... or somewhere, to set it so that when you open (PrE9's) organizer instead of starting with keyword hierarchy list - it could open on keyword cloud view? I am not so keen on the hierrarchy method...
    Thanks.
    brush

I did some experimenting in the Elements 9 Organizer.
1-- yes, when you close the Organizer then it does always seem to come up next time with the Thumbnail grid AND the Tags panel on the right is set to Hierarchy view. Then you must click on the icon for Cloud view.
2-- my conclusion is that if I click on the Cloud icon after starting the Organizer, then it was staying as Cloud in the Keyword Tags panel to the right of the Thumbnails for the duration that the Organizer is open.
3-- Note that if you use Full Screen for viewing your photos, then for the "Quick Organize" panel that drags out from the left side of the screen near the bottom, the default for Keyword Tags is Cloud. This is a different method of working which you may or may not like: however since it does set Cloud I decided to mention it.
FYI - to get to Full Screen you can use the pull down menu for the Display icon (that is next to the House icon on the top bar of the main Organizer screen). Choose the option "View, Edit, Organize in Full Screen".  FYI - I usually select the thumbnails of the photos which I want to Organize before I go in to Full Screen.

  • Question about keyword hierarchies

Hi, I'm relatively new to Lightroom. I'm seeing an "interesting" behavior with respect to hierarchical keywords and I'd like to understand if it is correct.
To start with, I've got an example keyword hierarchy for aircraft:
So far so good. Now, I have brought some images into Lightroom that have all of those keywords (aircraft, boeing, b-17 flying fortress, texas raiders) in the image. These keywords were inserted by another application, prior to me switching to Lightroom and importing into Lightroom. After importing into Lightroom, I arranged these in a hierarchy. So, when I select one of those images, the keyword panel looks like this, indicating that all four of those keywords are explicitly assigned to the selected image:
Now, I find that if I export a version of this image with "Write Keywords as Lightroom Hierarchy", then the actual Keyword metadata field in the file contains this:
air show, aircraft, airshow, b-17 flying fortress, boeing, monochrome, texas raiders, aircraft | boeing, aircraft | boeing | b-17 flying fortress, aircraft | boeing | b-17 flying fortress | texas raiders
I understand that this is the actual keywords, followed by the hierarchical keyword paths. However, I notice that parts of the hierarchical path are repeated. In other words, the above includes all of the following:
         aircraft | boeing
         aircraft | boeing | b-17 flying fortress
aircraft | boeing | b-17 flying fortress | texas raiders
Is this because the "boeing" and "b-17 flying fortress" keywords have been explicitly assigned to the image, in addition to these keywords being inherited from the lower level keywords which are also explcitly assigned?
What I would like to see in the exported file is the list of keywords plus just the one long hierarchical path from bottom-to-top, without the "pieces", like this:
aircraft | boeing | b-17 flying fortress | texas raiders
I notice I can get that if only if I unassign all keywords except for the lowest-level keyword, like this:
Is this expected behavior? I assume that it is.
The problem I am having is this. In my pre-Lightroom days, I had all these keywords assigned directly to the images without any hierarchy whatsoever. I imported them into Lightroom, and then arranged the keyword hierarchy inside Lightroom's Keyword List panel. Now, as a result of all keywords in the hierarchy being explicitly assigned, I'm seeing parts of the hierarchy repeated when I export (as shown above), and it is "messy".
Is there any way to clean this up without it being a totally manual process?
Does it harm anything to leave it as-is (i.e. with repeated parts of hierarchy)?
    Thank you
    Chris

Thank you John, KeywordConsolidator has a "Remove Parents" function which (if I understand the description correctly) will do what I'm looking for.

  • [Question]General Question about iphone replace

hi all, sorry for the post but cant find any answer in apple support page.
i live in israel, my family bought me iphone 3G, my wi-fi isnt working..
if i`ll give the phone to my family can they walk into apple store and replace the phone?
since day 1 phone isnt working,
i dont have recipt or at&t contract for this phone
    i do have warrenty
my family have 2 3g iphones at&t contract...
    Message was edited by: shachar

When an iPhone 3G is purchased new in the U.S., activation with AT&T and signing a two year contact with AT&T is required at the time of purchase.
If this iPhone was purchased new at an Apple Store or at an AT&T corporate store by whoever purchased this iPhone for you, this means they were required to activate the iPhone 3G and sign a two year contract with AT&T at that time.
If this iPhone that was purchased new in the U.S. is no longer activated with AT&T, the warranty will not be honored unless the iPhone is activated with AT&T. If the iPhone is activated with AT&T, you must return the iPhone to someone you know in the U.S. and have the person you know take it to an Apple Store for inspection and testing for a possible exchange under warranty.
If you have hacked this iPhone to be unlocked for use with another provider's SIM card besides AT&T, doing so is against Apple's license agreement for the iPhone, is not supported by Apple, and voids the warranty.
This iPhone must be activated with AT&T, not hacked for use with another provider's SIM card, and it must be returned to the U.S. in order for Apple to honor the warranty if the problem cannot be resolved by any other means besides an exchange under warranty.

  • Question about keyword searches

    Hi,
When I am searching a large collection of pictures by keyword, how should I set Aperture such that if I select 1 keyword, the ONLY OTHER keywords that Aperture shows me and allows me to select are those that already contain the first keyword I had selected?
So for example, if I select the keyword "SAN FRANCISO" then all the remaining keywords that I am able to select should not be my entire collection of keywords, but rather only those that exist within photos that currently also have a tag of SAN FRANCISO on them. By this logic, then, I am unlikely to see the tag "EGYPT" but more likely to see the tag "Coffeeshop".
    Any ideas?

if I understand u correctly, yes.
-- Include if "All" of the following "Match" -- (instead of "Any")
so a search for "San Francisco" will only show San Francisco, if not, you'll get San Diego, San Pedro,...if "All" is not selected, as oppose to "Any"

  • Question about replacing hard drive

Hey everyone. I had a question about replacing a hard drive for a 2012 midyear pro. I have replaced hard drives before on windows machines, but this is the first mac I have owned. It didn't come with a hard drive when I bought it, but I do have mavericks installed on a usb. As far as a new hard drive, will any 2.5 laptop hard drive work? I read it needs to be 9.5mm thick. Is that correct? As far as I am concerned, hardware is hardware and should be the same as replacing a hard drive on a dell laptop but wanted to see if apple has any weird restrictions.
Also, is there anything I need to consider or be aware of when putting in a new hard drive? Or can I just hook up the hard drive and plug in the USB and install the software onto the hard drive. Thanks
Excuse and ny ignorance as I am new to macs.

Yes.  Any SATA drive will do with those specifications.
Also, is there anything I need to consider or be aware of when putting in a new hard drive? Or can I just hook up the hard drive and plug in the USB and install the software onto the hard drive.
Assuming that the installer is functioning correctly, install the HDD in the MBP and engage the installer.  You should come across a 4 option menu.  Select Disk Utility from it.  Open Disk Utility>Erase and format the HDD to Mac OS Extended (Journlaled).  One you finish that, you may install the OSX.
    Ciao.

  • A lot of questions about my MacBook Air

I am really new to re-using Apple computers. The last time I used an Apple computer was back in 1987 when the school and my family had Apple IIGS computers. I have been using PC's which reqiure Microsoft. I a lot of have questions (10 questions) about my MacBook Air and I hope you good people can and will help me.
    Product: MacBook Air
Operating System: Mac OS X Version 10.7.4
    1) I Downloaded MacKeeper because I was fooled. I had a bad feeling just before I Downloaded it and I should have listened to my heart. However, I didn't buy it or fully Install it. It was like a test run and then they wanted me to pay almost $100 for it. Thankfully, I didn't because I read it is Malware. I spoke with an Apple Tech at Apple Care and he helped me get rid of it (or so we think). I don't see it anymore on my computer. I read it can slow down your computer. How can you tell if it's really off of the computer?
    2) When I open "Finder" and I see that there are people Sharing my computer with me. I went into AirDrop and it reads, "Other people can see your Mac as (my name) MacBook Air when their computer is nearby." I bought a HotSpot and while it's turned on and I selected it as my WI-FI connection I thought it would  get rid of these people, protect what I type, me, my items, computer, etc. But it didn't.
I didn't know that I have to buy a exteral CD and/or DVD Player in order to connect to the brand new Modem and Router in one by NetGear. I am so used to PCs and the CD/DVD Players being built inside.
The people at Apple Store told me that there is an internal modem inside, but I don't know how to find it and what to do then.  Should I use a Firewall?, An AntiVirus, AntiMalware, AntiSpyware, etc. Apple Care tech told me I don't need to get an AntiVirus.
    3) Is there a new kind of Wireless Modem and Router that doesn't require a CD-ROM?
    4) When I travel or fly and I am not close to home I was told by Best Buy and Sprint that I had to buy a mobile HotSpot to use the computer (WI-FI) safely. As I typed, I have one. But it's pretty expensive and only gives me 1 hour and 15 minutes per day to Stream. What can I do to use this computer safely Online when I am out of range from a Modem and Router? What do people do when they travel on airplanes?
    5) This compter won't let me use "Raid." I think you have to have a newer version. I hard about Raid on the radio from Leo (can't recall his last name) who's a Tech expert.
    6) Should I buy a ZipDrive? Apple Store Tech told me that I didn't need a ZipDrive. I just remember the episode of HBO's "Sex and The City" when Carrie looses everything because her copy crashed. Now, of course, I know that's a fictional show, but with PC's and Microsoft I have lost everything when it crashed, frooze up, etc. I know there's iClouds. I heard about Carbonite, but I have read the Pros and Cons about it. Mostly they are Cons about it. I just don't want to do anything wrong and mess up this computer.
    7) Should I buy a new Printer/Copier/Scanner because mine is an HP. It's not new, but it works. I even have a CD-ROM for Macs. What about the new product called, "Neat"?
    8) Is there a special product that I should buy to do Online Banking and/or other important stuff?
    9) I saw and read about iWork in the Apps Store and it sounds cool. I still have alot of friends and colleagues who still use Microsoft. Is iWork good to use? Should I Download it from the Apple Apps Store or can a buy it at Apple? Is there another Word Processing Program that is great and user friendly and will work with Macs and PCs?
    10) Should I Update the OS with OS X Mountian Lion Pro from the Apple Apps Store or buy it at Apple Store?
In advance, I wish to thank you in this Apple Support Communites for your help.  Have a safe and happy holiday weekend!

    1) Here are instructions for removing MacKeeper. Since it mostly consists of manually looking for folders and specific files, if you follow the instructions you either fail to find what you are told to find (because your AppleCare guide gave you complete instructions which you followed) or you'll find some additional files that need to be replaced.
2 & 3) I assume you are looking at the sidebar of a Finder window and seeing Shared and computers under it. Those are computers that you can potentionally share. To do so you'd need an account on their computer and a password. They are not sharing your computer.
AirDrop allows you to create an adhoc network for filesharing and it only functions when you have selected the AirDop item in the SideBar. Actually doing that merely announces to computers in the same network node that your computer is available for a file to be sent to. Even then you have to explicitly allow the file to be downloaded to your computer. Similarly you'd be able to see other computers with AirDrop selected and be able to send them a file - which they'd have to accept.
The only reason your NetGear Router comes with a CD is to install and run their 'easy' step by step configuration program. It can also be done manually with a browser. Read the manual to find the IP address you must enter to access the router's configuration menu. Apple's WiFi routers don't require a CD to install the software because the configuration software is already on your computer.
I do have my firewall turned on. AntiVirus software isn't a bad idea - I use Sophos having tested it for a review for our local User Group and I found I liked it better than ClamAVx which is what I'd been using before. Both are free.
    4) I think you were scammed by Sprint and BestBuy. I use hotel, coffee shop, and restaurant WiFi spots and have for years. However, because they can be unsecured, I do not shop online or bank when I'm using them. I also use 1Password and don't reuse passwords so even if a sniffer should grab an account and password that's all it would get - one account.
    5) Raid doesn't really make sense with a MacBook Air - a RAID involves 2 or more disks being used as if they were one.
    6) Zip drive? No. External hard drive - yes. It isn't a question of if a computer's hard drive will malfunction, it is when. OWC has a nice selection of external drives and the Mac has a built in backup system called TimeMachine. Due to the way TimeMachine works, I've found that your TimeMachine drive should be at least twice as large - and preferably 3-4 times as large as the data you are backing up.
    7) if your printer works and it has Mountain Lion drivers, why replace it?
    8) Online banking is done with a browser - Use Safari or FireFox
    9) If trading files with Windows users is important Mac: Office is your best bet. If not, iWork, Mac:Office, or LibreOffice are all good possibilities.
    10) you can only buy Mt Lion via the App Store.

  • Questions about using a PDF form online

I have a client who wants to create an online version of a PDF form that they are currently using. I am currently trying to explain to them that this would be best done as an HTML web form, but I may not win this argument. I have only used PDFs for printed forms (either hand-written or using form fields) so I am not familiar with any problems that converting the form for use online would entail.
When the 'Submit' button is pressed on the form, is there a way to redirect to another web page after the data is submitted? (i.e. does the PDF have access to it's outer 'environment'?)
Are there any security issues submitting data using the PDF form as opposed to using a standard web form? (There may be sensitive data being submitted)
I'm not sure how they plan to handle the data that is submitted, but there are several options in the submitForm parameters - I am assuming that using the HTML option would submit the data in the same format as a web form would. Am I correct here?
Can the PDF be prevented from being downloaded or printed? This form should only be used to submit data to their server, not as a printed form.
Are there any other 'gotchas' that I need to look out for? Does anyone have a recommendation for a site which contains any tutorials or guidelines for using PDF forms online?

    Thanks for the information.
Yes, I agree that there is less reason for it to be a PDF form (Actually, no real reason other than the original form already exists in PDF), but I am unfortunately in the position that my input in this project is not necessarily being considered (my company is following direct -and inconsistent- directions from the client, and I have no contact with the client to ask questions about what their actual needs are). I have been told to give the client the 'Tomato' that they are asking for, even though they are describing an 'Apple'.
The reason this form is not meant to be printed is that we have replaced the 'Signature' fields from the original form with checkboxes that the user must check to confirm they have 'signed' the document. If they are to print/fax/whatever the document, they should use the original form, not this one. And I am still trying to explain to them that this would be better served with an HTML web form, but I fear I am losing that battle.
I have brought up the fact that it is not 100% guaranteed that Acrobat will be available in the browser, although I can only guess that it is less than likely that anyone will not have some sort of PDF viewer available to their browser.
I will also mention that issues may arise if the file is not submitted from within the browser.

  • Questions about mac mini iTunes server, streaming to macbook pro, ipads, etc.

I'm thinking about getting a mac mini to work with my NAS as a iTunes server. I have a bunch of questions about this. I will have two iPhones, a few iPads, and a laptop that will be accessing the files. I have iTunes match. This is basically to keep an always on computer for hosting the music/movies. My questions are as follows . . .
#1 Are there any good, comprehensive guides to show you how to do this?
#2 Can the movies be accessed when not at home on the shared network?
#3 Can the iPads or the macbook pro download the shared movies to be stored locally?
#4 Back to #3, how will it work on my macbook pro with listening to music (I have iTunes match)? Say i go to library and I break out my macbook pro and I don't have internet. What happens if I download music while at home onto my macbook pro to listen to it when I go to the library? Will i start a new library on my macbook pro? How will that mesh with the home server when I come back.
#5 Is there a way to mirror files or folders? So something that I have on my macbook pro will also mirror on the home server.
Thanks for your help on this. I'll post any follow up questions.

No. You will have to format the drives in Disk Utility>Erase to Mac OS Extended (Journaled) and then install the OSX by using the original install disks.
3.) I want to replace the ram sticks to max capacity. This is 2 2GB sticks, Correct?
No.  An early 17" 2008 MBP will accept 6GB RAM with the following specifications:  200-pin PC2-5300 (667MHz) DDR2 SO-DIMM.  The best sources of Mac compatible RAM are OWC and Crucial.
    4.) Most difficult...
I want to extend the monitor wirelessly to a projector. I thought about using Apple TV and Airplay. However, support for airplay is for MacBooks 2011 and newer. I thought of using a PS3 and the media server, but I think this brings on a format compatibility issue. (my library is so large I could not afford to convert all my movies to MP4.) So, how would you recommend I put my extended monitor with VLC player onto a projector?
Could I possibly connect the MBP to a Mac Mini as an extension? would this work natively? I would rather use a VGA cord than F with 3rd party app BS.
    Cannot help you there.
5..) I want to Bypass iTunes this time around. I would prefer to use Finder and VLC to manage all of my music. I mostly play all my music on shuffle, so, could I create a playlist on VLC with all of my music and play it randomly? (im sure this is possible but i'd like to organize all my plans with confirmation.)
You are not obligated to use iTunes.
6.) Can i upgrade the keyboard to backlit? i've read that this is possible.
All MBPs have back lighted keyboards.  Your either needs a NVRAM reset or a repair.
    Ciao.

  • Questions about the future directions of InfoPath and Microsoft Access

Because I have been confused about the future directions of InfoPath and Access, I wrote a short blog post, which I have pasted below.  My question is, can Microsoft provide some more guidance on Access vs InfoPath?  If Access is indeed the
the future direction, can you please provide some pointers to resources that can help us transition.
A Short Review of MS Access,  SharePoint ,InfoPath (2013)
After the November 2012 SharePoint Conference in Las Vegas (#spc12) there were a number of blog posts and people saying that Access 2013 was great and would be replacing InfoPath.
    Marc Anderson and
    Ruven
Gotz have short posts summarizing #SPC12 and touch on the subject of InfoPath and Access.  I also spoke with several individuals shortly after #SPC12 and they were excited about Access 2013.
Since I rely heavily on InfoPath for much of what I do, I wanted to kick the tires and see what everyone was talking about.  First, a few notes about SharePoint 2013 and Office 2013.
Microsoft should rename Access:  If you have tried to
bing the word Access, then you know that the search results are overwhelming,  because the word "access" is used for so many other purposes.
Use the RTM version of Office 2013! I was performing  my investigations by leveraging the Office 365 Beta and the Office Applications that come with it.  Not much was working!  After I uninstalled the Beta
version of Office 2013 and Installed the RTM version everything seemed to work.
Windows 7 and IE 9.0: The drag & drop that is being touted as
"manna from heaven" seems to work well with Firefox, Safari, Chrome, and IE 10, but it does
    not work with IE 9!
Non Microsoft browsers are still second class citizens (except for the drag & drop):  Microsoft has finally done away with the Active X's for datasheet view (that is brilliant!)  One can now see the newly
minted datasheet view in many browsers.  But I still find that one needs to be in IE to do a number of key manual opeartions.  For example pasting numerous rows of data from a spreadsheet into the new sheet view works only in IE.
    Access 2013
Microsoft Access is touted as a non developer tool.  I know a number of people who are on the business side and love Access.  These people will like the renewed energy that Microsoft has applied to Access.   One should note that conceptually
this functionality existed  in SharePoint 2010.  Here is what I see that is new:
+The new version works better:Although I haven't tested it fully, it seems that many more features that work on the Desktop version of Access, now work in the published Web Application which is hosted by SharePoint 2013.
+The new version has fairly robust browser based forms: End users can now fill in data using forms that are rendered in the browser.
+The published version that resides in SharePoint now uses its own SQL server tables.  So the engine appears to be SQL Server, not a modified version of Access built for a server.  This stands to be quite robust, but I imagine
that some quirks will surface due to new model.
    The limitations are:
    - Access is pretty much its own application and does not integrate with SharePoint building blocks.  For example, an Access table is not easy to integrate with a SharePoint workflow.  Further, although  Access forms now are visible
in a browser, they are not nearly as rich as InfoPath forms.  InfoPath forms cannot easily integrate with the Access tables.  In order to integrate SharePoint features and Access, one needs to tie SharePoint list(s) to Access as data sources.
This overcomplicates the model and one may very well run into synchronization issues.
In short, although I believe there will be some people who will be happy with newly minted Access, I do not think that Access will be able to replace InfoPath and Workflow technologies.  I do agree that Microsoft does not seem to have put much energy into
InfoPath.  If they leave a vacuum in this space, then others may very well take over, for instance Nintex Forms.

Although I agree with the comments made by Ruven and Marc after the conference please note that those blog posts are their own personal opinions and that they don't work for Microsoft.  A lot of people have asked Microsoft to clarify the future of InfoPath
and the response up until now has been a deafening silence.  In my opinion speculations about Access replacing InfoPath are premature.
I should also point out that most of your comments about Access 2013 above are actually about Access Services in SharePoint Server 2013.  Access Services are NOT Access they are a shared service offering in SharePoint that convert and publish Access
databases and forms.  As you point out once an Access database is published through Access services it is converted to SQL Server and no longer resides in Access.  Of course I don't work for Microsoft either so these are all just my personal opinion.
Having said that I doubt you will get the confirmation/response that you are hoping for from any official Microsoft channel.

  • A question about grub and USB

    Hi All
I have a quick question about grub and USB that I can't quite find the answer to by searching.   Most of the FAQs discuss booting a full linux dristribution from USB. My situation is this.  I am getting a new computer with two drives, the second will be arch and the first will be Vista (for my wife).  I want the computer to boot the same way that my wife's machine boots at work so I don't want to install grub on the MBR.  So, is there a way to have all of the grub config files and kernels installed on the second drive and simply install to grub boot loader to the MBR of a USB stick?  My goal would be to simply plug the USB stick into the new PC and boot arch from the second drive.
    Thanks
    Kev

    i cant say for hp's
havent worked on any in a while
recent machines have been coupleof dell's , vaio & emachine
which dells do offer it at least the ones i tried , my laptop does(dell)
all home pc's are built by me which do offer to boot individual drives
what hp you getting it may tell in specs
are both discs sata? if so it might not offer this option with 2 drives of same interface
check your power supply alot of these preconfigured machines put cheap under reated power supplies in there
    & will burn your motherboard i just replaced PS(250 watt) & mobo(845gvsr) in an emachines <cheap stuff<
i hope you researched the pc before buying ie : mobo, power supply are the biggest concerns
i find it much more benificial to build my own machine gives me peace at mind. the cost is sometimes more in $ but not always , your biggest expense is time researching hardware
if you live in usa the best places to start looking are bensbargains.net & pricewatch.com
i am not affiliated with either & niether sell the hardware they are just advertisers a place to buy
for costomized machines that i would trust is unitedmicro.com theyll asemble & test before shipping
i have gotten 2 machines so far from them with NO PROBLEMS with hardware (knock knock)
you may want to consider this in your next venture for pc

  • Few questions about difference between Satellite P70 , L70, S70

Hello, i have many questions about the series P70 , L70, S70 that come with a 1920x1080 panel.
    1) What are the differences between the L70 and S70 series? Except of the HDD capacity and RAM, the notebooks look pretty identical.
    2) Do P70 , L70, S70 support a 2nd HDD or is it just the P70 series that support it ?
    3) Do all three (P70, L70, S70 series) come with the same TFT Panels ?
    4) Which of the above series supports mSata ?
    5) Do all of the model of each series come with a mSata support? E.g. Could it be that L70-a-13m supports mSata while the L70-a-146 does not ?
    6) All of the above, come with a S-ATA II or S-ATA III interface ?
    7) Which is the best of those series listed ? I am trying to understand what makes the big difference from S70 to P70 except of the casing for example.
    Thank you in advance.

    >1) What are the differences between the L70 and S70 series? Except of the HDD capacity and RAM, the notebooks look pretty identical.
What Sat L70 and S70 models do you mean exactly? There are different L70-xxx and S70-xxx models on the market which supports different hardware specifications.
    >2) Do P70 , L70, S70 support a 2nd HDD or is it just the P70 series that support it?
As you can see in this [Sat P70 HDD replacement document,|http://aps2.toshiba-tro.de/kb0/CRU3903II0000R01.htm] the P70 series supports 2nd HDD bay BUT even if there is an 2nd HDD bay this does not mean that you could use 2nd HDD. In case the 2nd HDD bay would be equipped with HDD connector, you could use the 2nd HDD
I found also the [Sat L70/S70 HDD replacement |http://aps2.toshiba-tro.de/kb0/CRU3703HG0000R01.htm] document on Toshiba page and there I can see that 2nd HDD bay is not available
    > 3) Do all three (P70, L70, S70 series) come with the same TFT Panels?
See point 1). Different P70, L70, S70 models were equipped with different hardware parts.
    > 4) Which of the above series supports mSata?
As far as I know only some P70 models are equipped with an 256GB mSATA-SSD.
    > 5) Do all of the model of each series come with a mSata support? E.g. Could it be that L70-a-13m supports mSata while the L70-a-146 does not ?
See point 4) not all models supports the same hardware specifications
    > 6) All of the above, come with a S-ATA II or S-ATA III interface ?
I dont think that SATA III is supported. I guess it would be SATA II
    > 7) Which is the best of those series listed ? I am trying to understand what makes the big difference from S70 to P70 except of the casing for example.
Not easy to answer because there are too many models released in Europea.
And not all models are available in each country. So I guess you will need to look for models which were released in your country.
