A Recurrent Kernel Panic [w/report]
I hate to start another topic on this issue but I can't seem to turn up anything helpful via google.
1. I get this kernel panic on a regular (2-3 times a day) basis
2. I get it when using safari (Doesn't matter which version 2, 3-- all the same)
3. I keep all my software updated- had the same issue in 10.3 all the way up.
4. I Don't have anything plugged in except keyboard and mouse.
5. I use an older LCD with the dvi converter that came with my comp.
6. It's NOT the RAM-- it did the same thing with the old RAM that it shipped with.
Thanks in advance! Any help is appreciated!
*For Some reason i cant post all of the kernel info here. so here is a link to read the full report: http://journal.eternallightstudios.com/?page_id=266 *

Man! When I came across this post, I thought I hit a goldmine of information that would help me figure out why my new Intel iMac was having so many kernel panic attacks!
My kernel panic attacks are more random and I haven't been able to track any program pattern that would lead me to believe it was application based.
Here's the basic symptoms:
1. Kernel panics close to starting up or restarts
2. My software is updated often (currently 10.4.10)
3. Only have Logitech wireless keyword/mouse plugged in.
4. Have tried zapping PRAM this week. Not much luck.
5. Just checked RAM using AHT extended tests. No problems found.
6. Kernel panics happen at random events like clicking on icon in dock, reading email (Entourage 2004), even reading Apple support files using Firefox 2.0.0.6, and occasionally when I come back from lunch and my screen is black. I've read enough to say the screensaver issue others have doesn't seem to be my issue.
Here's my system setup:
2.16 GHz Intel Core 2 Due - 24" iMac
3 GB 667 MHz DDR2 SDRAM - Apple installed at shipping
Mac OS X (10.4.10)
Funny thing, though, after a restart I get that "OS X unexpectedly quit" window. But when I click on report, nothing ever happens.
Here's the last 2 log files I see though in the panic.log:

I would also consider Download and install AppleJack - CNet Downloads or MacUpdate. Read the documentation then use the software according to its instructions. AppleJack will repair permissions, the hard drive, and remove some caches.

Try booting into Safe Mode and see if the panics stop. This will disable your third-party extensions such as:
com.bresink.driver.BRESINKx86Monitoring 8.0
com.Cycling74.driver.Soundflower 1.5.3
com.rogueamoeba.InstantOnCore 6.0.1
com.rogueamoeba.InstantOn 6.0.1
If the panics stop in safe mode then uninstall the software that installed the above extensions. Be sure to restart the computer after uninstalling the extensions. I would also disconnect all third-party peripherals while in safe mode. -
Macbook Retina Freezing and Kernel Panic
Hi,
I've read many reports at Apple forums but no one seems to have a solution for my problem.
I own a new MacBook Pro Retina Display 2.6GHZ, with a LED Cinema Display as the first extenal monitor.
1) When I add a second external monitor through the MiniDisplayPort to VGA Adapter, MBP keeps throwing Kernel Panics sending reports to Apple. The log is below.
2) Every time the screen saver enters and I stay away for approx one hour, it freezes and makes me power off and turn on again. The curious, the mouse keeps working but does not click anywhere, and the keyboard is dead. The screen saver freezes but the last image keeps showing.

I'm on an older Macbook Pro (ultimo 2008), right on the edge of what Yosemite can run on, and I'm having recurrent kernel panics when using Exposé, mostly in Safari (because that's the program in which I most commonly have multiple windows open).
The issue seems to be getting worse; I've had three just today - by contrast, I might have had three panics *alltogether*, if that, on this machine before Yose, including Mavericks (which sucked in so many other ways that Yosemite actually seems to have mostly fixed).
Of course I can just stop using Exposé, though since that was the last really great feature introduced on OS X for actual computers before it became an afterthought behind the mobile version, and I find it super-useful, I'd like to have use of it.
As a side note, I actually suspect this may have something to do with the later OS'es having been designed for the kind of graphics handling that happens on an iPad or iPhone, and is ill suited for the very different and much more demanding screen work happening on a real computer - this suspicion predates these kernel panics (which only started happening these last few weeks, and I've been running Yose since it came out) and is based on my experience that many things involving the windowserver process (that would be most things, actually) seem buggy and unstable.
As another side note, this shouldn't have much to do with the fact that my machine is old - sure, that might cause everything to slow down, or even not work, but as far as I know a kernel panic is a pretty bad thing that goes beyond simply having performance issues.
Anyone else seeing this problem, or - pray tell - have any idea how one might alleviate it?Hey Joe,
Thanks - I actually already read that article and find it unhelpful, mostly because it puts the crux of the problem on the user. Basically, it says "nothing could be wrong with our software so you probably installed something you shouldn't have, and also here's 40 hours of tech homework for you (that probably won't help)".
Also, it refers to Mavericks, which I mention for two reasons: One, that "help with the specific application causing trouble" thing has apparently been removed again as of Yosemite (so that's no help) and two, the issue I describe didn't actually happen in Mavs, for all its other glaring shortcomings.
If I'm being honest I didn't expect anyone to hand me a solution - though hope springs eternal! - but rather to bring the issue to attention; after all, anything at all that might cause a kernel panic by using a central part of the system (a function which, by the way, has worked flawlessly since it was introduced) deserves to be mentioned, be it eversomuch "the fault of a 3rd party app/plugin/kext".

About 10 kernel panics in the past 3 months - looking for cause
Hello,
I have tried searching extensively in the discussions.apple.com and in Google but cannot answer the question myself. I've had quite a number of kernel panics in the past 3 months on a MacBook Pro 13" purchased new in July 2010.
I'll post two reports below but the cause looks to be the following, which I cannot interpret:
panic(cpu 0 caller 0x226b57): "thread_invoke: preemption_level -1, possible cause: unlocking an unlocked mutex or spinlock"@/SourceCache/xnu/xnu-1504.9.37/osfmk/kern/sched_prim.c:1471
Can anyone explain that?
Unfortunately I cannot say anything about what was happening at the time of the kernel panic. There appears to be nothing systematic from my end. It doesn't happen all the time but frequently enough now that it is frustrating if a lot of work / apps are open.
I have read the following http://www.thexlab.com/faqs/kernelpanics.html but it did not help me out. I did perform a hardware test at boot up by holding down D. Hardware test passed twice without problems.
Thanks
TT Mac
Here are the details of two kernel panics:

Kernel Panic(s) after installing Final Cut Studio
So I've been using this Mac Pro for 10+ months.
10G Ram, 3 internal hard drives, OSX 10.5.8.
Been running Logic Pro and Aperture and other small apps with zero problems.
Recently, the only change to my computer is I installed Final Cut Studio and Logic Studio Upgrade.
Past 3 days I've gotten 2 kernel panics. (Report said something about FBD Memory?)
(1st one, I was using Mpeg Streamclip to transcode footage.
2nd one, I was only running Safari.)
I repaired disk permissions, used diskwarrior, did the hardware diagnostic test thing, nothing came up.
I asked Apple Genius but they just said reduce everything to 'base config' and troubleshoot from there.
I wanna ask you guys, do you know of any obvious existing conflicts between the software that might be going on? Am I missing something obvious?Have a look at System Profiler and if you have ECC errrors on the third slot (after rendering some time), you might have the same problem like me and it's not solved yet. But you can take out the third dimm or run smcFanControl and raise the speed a little. Both helps in my case as a workaround.

Kernel Panic on MacPro 1,1. Need help deciphering crash report.
Hi folks!
Been having a ton of issues lately with the MacPro 1,1. Frequent slow-downs, pinwheels, sluggish video and scrolling, especially in Safari.
Recently, I reinstalled Lion which put me back on version 5 of Safari and I've yet to update. This didn't solve any of my problems either.Kernel
Anyway, just had a Kernel Panic and it forced me to restart. Here's the report. Can someone help explain what caused the panic?

zalloc is the actual routine that detected the error. It is a memory allocation program which has been tested to death. It is vanishingly unlikely that you have discovered a problem in zalloc.
PluginProcess is what was running when it panic-ed. I expect that has to do with Safari plug-ins. ¿Are all the Plugins you are running now the correct versions to be running in this version of Safari?
You have many add-ons to the Mac OS X kernel:
com.techsmith.TACC 1.0.2
com.Cycling74.driver.Soundflower 1.6.6
com.blackmagic-design.desktopvideo.iokit.driver 9.7.1
com.blackmagic-design.desktopvideo.iokit.framebufferdriver 9.7.
com.blackmagic-design.desktopvideo.iokit.decklinkhddriver 1.0.0
again, you should be certain that each is the right version for the Mac OS X you are running. If still no joy, you may need to remove them all and test with no third-party add-ons.
NOT related to your symptoms, you are running all 4GB DIMMs on the B riser, and only one pair of 2GB DIMMs on the other Riser. Optimum performance is achieved with larger modules in the lowest-numbered slots, balanced between the two risers.
That would be a pair of 4GB DIMMs in the first two slots on each riser, a pair of 2GB DIMMs in the second slots on one, and the others empty. If you can fill all slots, you get a slight boost in speed as well. -
My MBP is Kernel Panicing, and I see the Crash Report is at 107% CPU
My fans are spinning quickly, and the whole thing sounds like a Jet Plane, even when no programs are open. I have been to the Genius bar 3 times this week.
They keep looking at it, doing disk checks, repairing permissions, then I left it with them for 3 days. They ran "diagnostic tests", but still came back with nothing.
They finally agreed to wipe my Hard Drive. Since I got it back Friday night, I had one more kernel panic, and I've managed to update Mountain Lion...but the Crash Report thing is still going on.
It's pretty obvious that the Genius bar here in London doesn't have a clue how to fix this, so what should I do?Here's the one from last night.

Help deciphering Mac Pro kernel panic report
Hi all,
my Mac Pro (early 2009, quad core 2.93GHz, NVIDIA GeForce GTX 285) has experienced some kernel panics with automated restarts (8 in total) over the past couple weeks. All panic logs show hardware errors of the "Read ECC" kind, though the affected cores vary (3x CPU 0, 2x CPU 2, 1x each CPU 4, 6 and 7). I am hoping that it's only one of the DIMMs gone bad (I was thinking about upgrading the RAM anyway), but I fear it might be the mem controller, one of the caches or the CPU itself.
There seem to be quite a few knowlegable people around, so can you please have a look at the panic log and give me a hint towards the culprit? Would be much appreciated.
Best regards, Armin

0xffffff80d08e5f30 : 0xffffff80034bThe Mac Pro's Xeon Processors feature Hardware Error Correction, and use Error Correcting Code memory.
Eight additional check bits (called Syndrome bits) are stored with each word in RAM memory. When Read out, the data and the syndrome are used together to detect and correct errors.
Single-bit errors are corrected on-the-fly with essentially no slowdown is processing speed.
Uncorrectable errors such as most double-bit errors cause a Kernel panic by design, to halt the machine and keep errors from propagating into your data.
Your kernel panic does indeed show the characteristics of an uncorrectable RAM memory error. The likelihood that the problem is caused by any of the other failures you listed is vanishingly small.

How to Determine which DIMM to Replace Given Kernel Panic Report
I have a dual cpu, mid-2010 Mac Pro with 32GB of Kingston RAM (8 4gb modules). Once a week or so, it suffers a kernel panic that appears to be caused by a RAM problem. Here is a typical one:

They all point to DIMM 0, Channel 1, and indicate addresses like 0x00000004xxxxxxxx. My question is: If I am interested in replacing the suspect DIMM, which one is it?
In the User Guide, it indicates I have 8 memory slots, organized in two chunks, each chunk adjacent to a cpu. The diagram says that Slots 1-4 are adjacent to one CPU, and Slots 5-8 are adjacent to the other. I, of course, filled all of them myself. System Profiler tells me about DIMMs 1-8. The kernel panic report seems to tell me that DIMM 0 is to blame, perhaps DIMM 0 in Channel 1. Here is a representation of the slot layout in the User Guide:
slot 5 CPU
slot 6 slot 4
slot 7 slot 3
slot 8 slot 2
CPU slot 1
latch latch
where the bottom of the diagram is toward the side of the tray that has the latches that release the tray. The form of answer I'd like to see is something like: Replace the DIMM in Slot 1. Or perhaps: Replace the DIMMs in slot 1 and slot 5.Perhaps I wasn't clear. The Genius *did* look it up - it took him about 5 actual minutes - and he said that all he could tell was that it was a memory error of some sort. I was asking him specifically what the 4 and 66 meant as well as the hex number. And with a ton of google I was unable find much about it.
I know quite a lot about how to eventually find the bad DIMM, if there is one. The machine in question is used heavily for Photoshop, InDesign, audio editing, some video editing, and programming, and if the memory failures (or memory controller errors) were more frequent, I would engage in classical isolation techniques - and I probably will have to. It simply seemed to me that the information I need is in the kernel panic logs. -
What does this Kernel Panic report mean? What can I do?
Hi,
I've had my MacBook (Late 2013 Retina 15" MacBook Pro) crash a few times, resulting in a kernel panic. I know a fair share about software, programming, website but I know absolutely nothing about crashing, etc.. All I know is that it crashed very suddenly, resulting in a grey screen talling me a Kernel Panic had occurred.
I was hoping someone could make anything out from this? I saw current thread was 'Skype' but I wasn't using it at the time, it was just in the background. This has happened before and I may not have been using it then. (It's not set to open at boot.) I was using a weather app ("Living Earth") at the moment it crashed but I only installed that yesterday and it's crashed before then.
Here's the Kernel Panic Report from /Library/Logs/DiagnosticReports.

As I say, it's happened a few times before (twice recently but also a while ago).
I'd be really thankful if anyone could share some light on this.I have noticed this. One time it crashed when using a video app such as VLC, and another time when changing desktops between an app playing a video and say Skype or Google Chrome (I can't be sure which).
Here's some more information about my Mac if it helps:
Operating System: OS X 10.9.2 (Mavericks) 13C64
Model: Apple Late 2013 Retina MacBook Pro 15"
Processor: 2.3 GHz Intel Core i7
Memory: 16GB 1600MHz DDR3
Graphics: Intel Iris Pro 1024MB
I've noticed that my case is similar to some people's in this thread. -
Mac Pro Freeze constantly - no kernel panic, no crash reports. Any ideas?
Dear all,
My good ol' Mac Pro (4.1-2009) which has been utterly reliable for years is now driving me cazy.
It freezes from time to time (let's say twice a day but sometimes not at all for 2 days in a row) - only possible option is hard reboot.
The screen just freezes, no kernel panic, no crash reports.
It has started after a ram replacement but then reverting to the original settings didn't change anything.
Tried all what possible: reverting to original ram (the Apple one), clean install on a new hard drive (10.8.4), replacing graphic card (4870 to 5770), Zap PRAM, resetting SMC, safe mode, clean new account, booting only with keyboard and mouse, Techtool Pro hardware tests-all passed (but not AHT as I can't find the original DVDs anymore), smc fan control, voodoo.
Some apps seem more enthusiastic at crashing than others especially Cinema 4D (when rendering), World of Warcraft (when playing), Photoshop CC (in OGL mode) but sometimes just dropping down a menu causes a freeze.
My eyes are full of tears.
Any idea? Someone had a similar experience?
I might start drinking.
Thanks.
Mac pro 4.1 - 2009 - 2x2.26 quad xeon.

ATI 5770Got a freeze but this time I also got a report! For some reason it makes me happy.
as I said, starting with just the keyboard and the mouse is enough to make this ****' machine freeze.
