A spider in my screen?

When I first bought my MBP last June, I noticed on my screen that I had a small dead pixel--not large enough to be a full dead pixel, but perhaps a dead or stuck sub-pixel. It was for all intents and purposes invisible, and unless you look for it, you can't see it. Most of the time I didn't even know it was there, it's literally the size of a speck of dust.
Recently I got a camera that could take very close macro photos, and decided to see this dead pixel up close. What a surprise when I found out there was no dead pixel at all. It looked like a tiny spider! Perhaps a mite of some sort, that had gotten embedded in the panel during manufacture. It's possible it's a piece of dust or debris that looks like a spider, but it's hard to dismiss the resemblance.
Here's a link to the photo.
Anyone experience anything remotely like this? Am I nuts?

Well, realistically speaking, what would they do about it? I doubt they would replace the screen. They have a certain measure for the number of dead pixels that are acceptable on a screen, and this isn't even a pixel (though, arguably, it is both 'dead' and 'stuck'...)
Truthfully speaking, the speck itself doesn't pose much of a problem...it's the thought of knowing I will always have a bug embedded in my screen. Even though it's just a speck to the naked eye, I will always know that it's a dead bug.
Aren't screens manufactured in super-sterile clean rooms? How did a bug even manage to get in there?

  • Dropped my iPhone, screen got big spider-crack. Can I walk out with a fresh unit?

OK, so I accidentally dropped my iPhone on the sidewalk and it had the absolute misfortune to land screen-first flat on the ground.  I pick it up and it's cracked to the point it's unreadable.  I do have a Protection Plan on my unit I bought from you.  Is it possible I can just have the sales rep replace my phone then and there and I can not worry about having to wait several weeks without my phone, which is my main point of contact?

iPhones are a Rapid Exchange Process.  What this means is that a refurbished replacement iPhone is shipped to the store at the same time the store is sending your unit out to the service center.  You will have your replacement phone within 3-5 business days.
You can obtain a loaner phone from the store for this time period if you so choose.  It won't be an iPhone but should be adequate to last you the short time you will be without a phone!

  • I have an ipad2 and the screen shattered. It still works but is there a way to safely fix it without having to buy a new one?

We were on April vacation this past week and my ipad fell onto the road and shattered the screen. I can still get onto it and maneuver around my apps but the screen is spider webbed and shattered. I have heard their are screen kits you can but to replace yourself, but the reviews are mixed. They also say to be careful of the wi fi wires because you can severly screw it up. This was a huge purchase for me and I can't afford to get another one. What can I do? Best Buy says they aren't allowed to replace the screens from Apple products and I have heard Apple just sells you a new one at a lower cost. Is there a way for me to replace the screen myself?

Back it up befor you go to the Apple store for a replacement or sending it out for rapair.

  • How can I deactivate an Ipod touch without using it? (Broken screen)

I was given the new Ipod Touch 4th gen for Christmas and my 2yr old daughter threw it in the dogs water dish. It was completely covered with water, and the screen would no longer light up but I could see it was still working.. So I left it out to dry for a few days but my husband decided he wanted to try and "fix" it by opening it up and that is when the screen cracked.. So now it lights up again but its all white with a spider web in the one corner. I can still hit the button twice and then guess where the play button would be on the screen and tap it and it will play music.. so I know it still "works" but there is no screen.. and since my husband opened it up I dont even want to try to take it in and get it fixed. The metal backing is all bent away from the glass and you can just tell that someone opened it up.. So instead, I went and bought myself a new one.
It doesnt bother me that I have two of them activated and listed on my computer. That is not why I want to deactivate it. What happened it, I tried to use the face time on my new Ipod and nothing happened. (Yes I made sure that I set it up before I tried to use it) My brother in law tried to call me (we were sitting in the same room) and it was going through on his end, waiting for me to pick up, but nothing was happening on my end. So I am thinking that because it was set up on the broken one first, its sending the call to that one instead of going to my new one.
So I am trying to figure out how I can deactivate/permanently shut off the broken Ipod without being able to go on it or use it. So is there a way to plug it in and deactivate it through Itunes on my computer? -OR- If you can explain why else my face time would not be working after setting it up on the new Ipod?
    Thanks..

Having identical FaceTime info on the broken iPod and the new one should not effect using FT on the new iPod as long as the broken one is off. However, you can try connecting the broken one to you computer and see if you can restore it to factory defaults/new iPod vi iTunes. See:

  • [SOLVED] Black screen after GRUB

    Hello everyone
I was setting up a machine with E17 and was trying various DM's since none seemed to work. After attempting to use LightDM, I get a black screen after GRUB. I was trying to read the various logs at /var/log/ but I cannot understand them properly. I tried reinstalling entrance and LightDM with no luck. I even tried editing grub's entry appending '1' or 's' and still no dice. Any help would be appreciated.

    Hi tnx for both answers.
I missed something important in Xorg.log. As you can see, fbdev and modesetting aren't loading as usual. I didn't check grub stuff, I don't think it's related, since loading in level 3 (text mode) I get a black screen but I can login as root and turn off the computer blindlessly.

No, I can't get it to work changing DM's. I'm not sure if I pacman -Syu before changing DM's another time. Maybe it wasn't LightDM's fault afterall.

  • My iPad 2 screen cracked, is there a way to get it fixed (I don't want to buy a new one)?

About a few weeks ago my iPad 2 screen cracked.  I don't know how it happened, but we think that someone might have stepped on it.  It wasn't bad at all, but then it spread.  One small crack across the middle & top, with a large "spider web" crack on the right side.  So I was wondering if there is a way to get the screen fixed from Apple.  Right now, buying another iPad isn't really the best option.

I don't know what country that you are in, but in the US the price for repair (i.e. replacement) is for the iPad 2 (from here) $249, and here in the UK £206.44 . If you select your country at the top of that page you might be able to find the price for your country and your service options.

  • MacBook screen is broken

I woke up this morning and took out my MacBook. When I turned it on, I noticed this spider-web crack in the screen (the LED part, not the glass.) What should I do? I'm trying to stay away from Best Buy, as they will rob my wallet and then some.

You're going to pay that anyway, as Apple will not sell you just the display. They only sell the entire display housing...which generally runs ~800.

  • 23" Broken screen.  What should I do?

Well, I posted yesterday I was looking for a power adapter. Found one today for $100 and plugged it in to learn that the HUGE spider web on my screen can only mean one thing: Its done broke.
Good news is that it still on Apple care. Bad news is they don't cover accidental damage. The guy from Ebay who sold it too me is not at fault, he listed it as untested, un-warrentied. I took a chance and, well, lost.
So, my good friends, what do I do? The Ebayer said I could get $600 for it. Im calling Apple tomorrow to find out what they will charge me to repair it. I paid $800 for it, and another $100 for the power adapter. Any ideas out there?
I am not creating a poster here to sell it, just looking for some creative ideas I hadn't thought of. Thanks for reading and have a great day.

If you paid via credit card can you take the issue up with them? Some credit card companies provide warranties for damaged/stolen goods. If the seller didn't act in good faith (trying to knowingly dump a physically broken LCD?) then maybe the credit card company can help to negotiate a partial refund.
If the package it arrived in was damaged (and insured) then maybe you can file a claim with the shipper.
If nothing else we have all learned a valuable lesson, unforatunately at your expense. Sorry to hear how it all ended up.

  • How can I get a free screen replacement from apple?

The other day, I brought my two week old iphone 5c to school and I dropped it on concrete. When I picked it up, I just put it in my pocket and kept on walking. when I took it out again, i saw the phone was smashed! i was so upset, since it was brand new and i hadn't even had  a chance to really go on it! The crack was HUGE! It's a huge spider web crack that spreads from the top way down to the bottom on the front screen. I was really confused cause my old phone was a crappy cheap little HTC and i had dropped it millions of times, and there isnt a single crack in it. My cracked iPhone is really new, and I payed for half of it! That was all my pocket money i had earned, EVER!!! I sent apple an email, but they just sent a stupid email saying, you cant contact us via email, for more information head to our website, blah blah blah! Seriously, don't they have time just to look at our emails?!  Anyway, that you can your screen replaced for free! If anyone knows anything about this, PLEASE comment!!!
    THANKS!

The chances of finding a Apple store to replacde just the screen is not very likely. If you get it done by another place it will void your warranty.
Now if you call Apple Care, just ask for a Senior Advisor, they do have the power to grant you a 1 time excetpion to replace your phone. Just don't be a dick, I am have personally replaced before it really just depens on the advisor and  a few other things.
They wont replace the screen, they will just replace the phone.
Now with that there a few ways to get it taken care of at that point and they will go over those options.
I wish you the best of luck.
