AirPlay Mirroring doesn't work even with the specified hardware/software

I have a late 2011 (OS X 10.7.5) MBP and a Sep 2012 Apple TV (MD199LL/A) with the updated software 5.1.
AirPlay Mirror icon doesn't appear in the menu bar.
No options/icons or texts related to AirPlay mirroring in System Preferences > Displays either. Checked detect displays, still no.
Updated all the software in both the MBP and the Apple TV on Oct 6th 2012 late evening/night and restarted both a couple of times, still no signs of AirPlay Mirror icon or option.
BTW, AirPlay works with iTunes, so I can hear music from MBP on my TV.
AirPlay Mirroring works with the latest iPad (as of Sep 2012) as well.
I think one or two people have reported this issue on the forum in response to some question/discussion. Thought it deserved starting a new topic in case some Apple folks are listening.
Perhaps their adverstising or guidelines need an update to remove references of AirPlay mirroring working with 2011 or newer MBPs. Perhaps they meant 2012 or newer?pthompson63
To be honest I use mine mainly near power and juice up when I can so I don't test the battery too heavily, so I haven't noticed but would probably not.
If mirror is the only thing you want to do but don't want ML look at third party apps such as airparrot or reflectorapp (I hvae used airparrot and found it OK).

Hello alex103, You might try to boot the system and press the key to run the hardware diagnostic test and see if you can confirm a hardware failure.
My suspicion is the hard drive may have failed.

Frequently after I have been viewing numerous sites on firefox, when I close down the last window and try to reopen firefox, I am told that the program is already running and needs to be shut down. Using Task Manager is not useful, since task manager doesn't show the program as up and running. The only way to get the program to close so it can be used for a different subject is to reboot the computer. This is happening 10 - 12 times a week now, and gradually getting worse. This closes out everything I have open, making it necessary to save all opened files BEFORE I reboot, and then going back to reopen all of them. None of the other questions I've seem point to this particular quirk in the problem.
This is not a cure but will make it easier if Firefox locks up.

I want to install 16 gb ram but I don't think I can change the lack of video card. I wanted this basic machine because it has fairly long battery life. I don't need or want retina at this time. My model is the mid 2012 model. I am running the adobe collection for mac, I want to run the windows versions. Is it possible? What is the most ram I could access using something like fusion 5, assuming I could get fusion 5 to work? would it refuse to run because of the intel chipset and lack of video card?
If I'm wrong and there is a way to add a video card to this model, could some version of fusion and windows 7 access more than 2 gb operating ram?
What cost would I be incurring, and would it be cheaper to buy a windows laptop with more ram than I could access via a virtual machine?

thanks for any suggestions. While many people have told me I can run everything on my macbook, I am concerned about what I think is a limited amount of ram that can be accessed over the virtual machine partition softwares, and I don't know if what I want to attempt is actually possible.
My mbp os is 10.8.2 on a 2.5 GHz intel core i5 4 gb 1600MHz DDR3 with 500 hard drive. the basic 13" mid 2012 machine.

also, off track but, for years I have wanted a small machine that is more easily portable than my 15" machines. I have only had this used machine for a few weeks, but already I have been very satisfied and used it for presentations at clients. I don't want an air because I really want the dvd burner and player. No matter what apple says about wireless, there are decades of legacy work stored on optical discs all over the world, and I don't want to be unable to open something at a client's office because I don't have a dvd drive. Additionally, I have very large files I want to transfer via ethernet or firewire so that the transfer will take less time and be more secure than wifi. I resist apple's trend to make every machine a disposable toy that is viable only a year or so. I have read reviews that label the mbp it a poor value compared to the air. If all you need to do is text and communicate via wifi, many devices will sufice, and an air is certainly the most elegant. But what about the cost of large ssd's and protecting the drive against damage from shock? I want to be able to move this thing around and the small size is much safer inside my padded bag when I sit in narrow airplane seats, crowded trains and other congested spaces. I am much more likely to be able to borrow a large screen in a client's office ( with the use of one of the three adapters I had to buy) than to be able to borrow a dvd drive that has drivers for mac os 10.8.2. I suspect this may be the last generation of machines that have optical drives and ethernet, and that was why I purchased it so that I could continue to do work into the next few years. I am impressed by the retina display, but I need long battery life. And as beautiful as the retina display is, it is even more of a problem when trying to cross platform with the windows world. I wish I could infuence apple to do a trial product flow for a machine designed to work with 80% of the business world that uses windows. How spectacular that would be. With all their expertise and adept hardware design, to create a machine that cross platforms better than a windows machine itself works? Now that would be an accomplishment. Instead of 8 or 9 percent of the total computer sales, why not aim for a higher percentage? Fusion should work on your machine and if you put 16 GB of RAM in (see http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/memory/Apple_MacBook_MacBook_Pro/Upgrade/DDR3_160 0MHz_SDRAM), Fusion can access a good portion of that. Also, in a Virtual Machine, the guest OS is presented with Fusion's video card emulation, not what's in hardware on your Mac. Of course, finding Windows 7 now that Win 8 has been released could take some doing and the Win 8 Pro upgrade price is supposed to jump to $200 the end of the month. Add that to the price of Fusion and the extra RAM and you're beginning to get into the realm of low end real PC's.
As to cross platform, I assume you're aware of BootCamp (http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1461). -

Where is the Apple problem? I have CS4 and CS5 running perfectly fine on my Macbook Pro. Installed 5 after Lion upgrade. Worth every cent. Adobe did have some catching up to do with Lion but with the CS5.5 update all runs fine. But not yours. So it is a problem with the Lion OS? You say you have been with Adobe since 2005. So you would be aware of all the other issues that Adobe had catching up with past Oss in Mac and Windows then. They get it right, but it is up to them. It is not up to Apple, nor Microsoft for that matter, to run around and check that every software developer in the world is running their business properly.
And what has politics got to do with anything. Some people just have to blame Software for their poor Hardware maintainence of failure of the same.

If you purchased CS5.5 then you do not need to uninstall the trial, just use the serial number to activate the trial to full use.

Is there an automatic method of extracting all the presets, settings, etc. from every program in the Adobe Master Collection 5.5?
I am about to regenerate my Operating System Partitions from scratch & do not want to go through setting up each & every program in the master collection by hand.Adobe does have some pages documenting where it keeps preference et. al. files. For example, this one for Photoshop CS5:

I do know that overlaying the contents of the Adobe Photoshop CS5 Settings folder does restore most of the preferences. The Color Settings are in a file called Color Settings.csf in another folder (depending on OS). What I don't know is whether there are paths in those files that will differ depending on how you reinstall your system.
You'll want to reinstall all your plug-ins again, much the same as when you reinstall Photoshop. But you can make a copy of your Plug-ins subfolders from your 32 and 64 bit Photoshop installation areas just for good measure, to make sure you don't forget some of them.
As for other programs in the suite... You'll have to look for that info separately.

...which essentially means it's most likely a volume license and thus not transferable in the first place. The rest is as Steve said - buying software on eBay is risky even on the best of days.
