A2dp on tiger solved

I just can't stand the crap sound quality of Tiger's bluetooth protocols. My HT820s just sat on the shelf wasted. Not anymore! Here's the fix.
http://david.connolly.name/blog/hub/mac/2007/02/23/Stereo-Bluetooth-Profile-A2DP -on-Mac-OS-X-Tiger.html?page=comments
I couldn't get esound to install with darwinports; used fink instead. The reliability is a bit dodgy, and my phone kills the connectivity requiring a restart of a2dp.sh . But my god, the sound quality is orders of magnitude better. The controls on the headphones still don't work. Guess I might end up dropping the cash for Leopard after all.
By the way (in case anyone from Apple read these things), this is my first mac. The a2dp nonsense is one more strike against the dubious "it just works" mantra. If you all are looking to keep the Windows defectors that came over because of bootcamp and Parallels like virtualization, these details matter. So, come on! Let's get a2dp and avrcp for 10.4.9.5!

Geez, I think the ad2p is one tof the best and underated innovations in consumer technology in some time. I have just got a new MacBook, and I cant belive e that the current OS doesnt support this BT stack. Surely a software patch will work. It does for Windows Mobile devices.

    2. My husband & I have owned probably 20 Macintoshes over the years and we have many sets of original disks on the shelves. Perhaps my lost ones are mingled in there. But how do I tell which ones go with the iMac Flatscreen? Neither the disks nor the packaging indicates what computer they go with. Is there some sort of code I can refer to?

    Hello "O":
    Welcome to Apple discussions.
I have lost the original disks for my iMac
Flatscreen. Now I need to re-install the system so
that I can get the computer to start up again.
    1. Will brand new Tiger disks solve my need for the
    original disks?
A retail version of OS X (10.4) will install the operating system without problem. If you go that route, I suggest wiping the HD first - although an erase and install will do that as well (overkill, I suppose).

I have a G4 (flat panel). My original software came on two DVDs - gray in color and labeled iMac Software install (1 of 2 and 2 of 2). My G5 software install DVD has "G5" on it.

OS X 10.4 (Tiger) will certainly run non-Intel applications. I have not run OS 9 for years, but I understand that OS 9 applications will run under OS X 10.4 (see this knowledge base article):

P.S. The next version of the operating system (code named Leopard) is due for release later this year.

  • QT from Mac to PC via ROM

Was gonna try to transport a same as source QT via a DVD and have been trying to follow the manual to execute. Not even sure if this method will work. Most of my segments are a gig or so.
Sharing a drive is niggily though I'm thinking of trying a weibetch pocket drive, having the PC work with it first, then dump my stuff on and see if they can read it.
I'm also going to try a DVD with the usual MPEG-2 but not sure if the other end can interface. It might be a problem for a projection presentation off a PC. Sometimes I get weird artifacts with my MPEG-2s even when luminance and color are to spec and creating through Compressor (DVD:Best Quality). I usually prefer the same as source QTs right into DVD Studio Pro.
The immediate problem with my ROM test is that when I go to choose my QT under the content section of DVD-ROM Data, under gnl format tab, it's grey.
You'all never let me, small fry, down. I appreciate any direction as always.

  • Dual Boot - Heat Problem

What I like about this Mac, is that I can boot into OS9.2.2 "Natively", rather than using Classic when in OS X. The reason for this is there is an OS9.2.2 application I need to use in my office that just dosen't work right in Classic. However, when in "native" OS9, the CPU HEATS UP TO 147 degrees! But the fan dosen't speed up to cool it down while in this mode. I have learned to not stay in this mode too long for fear of cooking my CPU, and I restart back in OS X, at which time the fan speeds up and cools the CPU back down to about 138 degrees, which seems to be normal for this machine.
The firmware boot rom in this Mac is 4.4.7f1. I know that there is a firmware update 4.4.8, which I have but have not installed, because the doc file that comes with it says "improves fan control behavior and reduces high speed fan cycling when running in Mac OS 9".
What I need is for the fan TO SPEED UP when in OS 9 "native" mode, to keep the CPU heat down.
That's why I never installed the 4.4.8 firmware update, as I think it might worsen the problem.
Has anyone done this update and does it make the fan hopefully speed up in OS 9 "native" mode?
As an alternative, I'm still running this Mac under OS 10.3.9. Would upgrading to Tiger solve this problem?

Hi. My G4 dual mdd 1,42 has the 4.4.8f2 firmware. When I boot into OS9 the CPU is normally cooled, more than OS X. Infact the fan starts earlier, and it's a little bit noisy, but CPU temp is lower than OS X
mode. The machine runs flawlessy with this firmware, bot 9 and X

  • [Solved] Bluetooth A2DP source to pulseaudio OR ALSA

    Edit
So, I'm happy to say that I have it working to some degree!
I wasn't happy with the default bluez tools, but I managed to find a useful set of tools which seemed to work better: http://gitorious.org/bluez-tools/bluez-tools/
I compiled and make'd them, then created the following startup script to set up everything in the order it is needed for the next part to work: https://gist.github.com/c990e397388bd4399a15
I made a file called bluetoothPin in the home directory with the following in it:
    <My phone's MAC (without the angle brackets)> <A Pin Number>
The bt-agent command in the startup.sh script uses that file to authorise connections. I aim to modify it to allow any connection to connect with the same pin, I'll get into that later.
For the actual streaming, I installed qt so I could get the qdbus binary, then I followed the instructions here: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php? … st10492742
That code worked, so I modified it a little so that it would wait for a connection, then make the connection, then wait for a new connection on disconnect: https://gist.github.com/8e32a9cf786995c00f2f
It's not perfect; things get a bit iffy when you try to pair and then connect a device without rebooting the pi: It disconnects gracefully, and it pairs correctly, but pulse doesn't seem to re-add it to its list, so it's no longer identified by my script. Also I haven't figured out how to pair any device against the same pin code yet. Any help with that would be awesome!
    Hi there,
I'm trying to build a bluetooth audio receiver server for my car! I have a raspberry pi with arch installed on it, bluez set up and configured (I can pair my phone with it through the bluez-simple-agent, although I think I'll have to write my own pairing daemon to auto-pair anything that attempts to connect).
Baby steps though: I've got bluez all set up as I mentioned earlier, but pulse doesn't seem to "see" the bluetooth connection. I'm not sure exactly what information you guys need to help me, but I've tried to add everything I could think of:

    About my project in general:
I want to be able to do the following:
    - Give pulseaudio access to the bluetooth device, and use the A2DP protocol to receive the audio. From my research, it is possible, but I'm not sure how.
    - Open up bluez so that I can pair any device by connecting with "1234" for the auth, then it will automatically check for A2DP and give that information to pulse
The idea being that any bluetooth device can pair without any interaction from the raspberry pi, and then pulse will have access to all of the devices which are playing music.
    1] Is this even possible?
2] Can I use alsa instead as it seems it'd be easier/lighter to manage?
3] Are there any documents other than arch's bluetooth and pulse wikis that I can read to help me figure this out?

Actually I've solved it myself by looking at the wiki page I posted.
I am not sure about what you said but PulseAudio doesn't require ALSA (alsa-lib, alsa-utils, sort of) to play sound except when with those applications that do not have direct support (now even Flash have that). But maybe the drivers for sound cards in Linux kernel could be said as a part of ALSA, then I am not sure about those stuff.

  • Bluetooth A2DP profile for Tiger?

I am looking to get a wireless headset to game with for my MacBook Pro - with Bluetooth built in, I figure this is the way to go.
My research so far has shown that bluetooth stereo headsets with microphones are available, but they require the A2DP Bluetooth protocol. Most sites mention OS X doens't support it, but they are also backdated several months.
Can anyone confirm if the latest version of Tiger supports A2DP, and / or if support for it will be included in future releases or updates of OS X?
    Thank you!
MacBook Pro   Mac OS X (10.4.7)

Joseph, thanks for the post. I'm a Joseph too, must have been fate I found your post. I was very stoked about the iTouch being able to use for Skype. Skype has a section at their site about how it's doable. I have the 3.0 ver on my Touch. I just tried to pair my jawbone to the touch, but no luck. yet, I was at the Apple store yesterday and in a group, including staff, discussing using Skype on the Touch. The staff was telling us the Jawbone & their $79 Platronics would work. I already have a jawbone for my cell phone, but the Touch, when Bluetooth is on, doesn't even find the jawbone device. So, I'm not sure what's next. I'll try the headset you noted.
    Thanks for your post.

  • Empty mailboxes after importing from panther to tiger - can't solve

    Dear all,
I have been happily using my ibook G3 300mhz for seven years now, running system nine first then jaguar then panther (currently 10.3.9).
I have nearly all my emails from 98 onwards, which I first imported from eudora to eudora (8600 to ibook) and then from eudora on ibook to mail on ibook. I have a pop account and a mac account with an alias (.mac and IMAP therefore). I probably have about 10.000 emails scattered in many folders and subfolders. Some of my mac mails are even saved in folders belonging to my pop account (thus located on my mac).
I've been waiting for the new macbook for a couple of months, had it for FOUR days now and seem unable to transfer my mail from my ibook to my macbook. I have tried both copying the whole mail folder and importing mailboxes from within mail.
With the first option when I open mail it says it needs to import my messages and is then stuck on message 659. May be a corrupt message but I have no way of knowing which one it is and delete it from the library. With the second options it imports all boxes alright, even displaying a numebr of messages whcih appears realistic, but I get the usual "You need to take this account online in order to download it" message. The only messages I can actually see are those in my inbox for my .mac account and those still on the server for my pop account. Any and all messages in any of the other mailboxes (even the .mac ones which are definitely on the server) seem to have disappeared.
I have even tried backing up from the ibook with mac backup and then restoring to the macbook (has worked for preferences, itunes playlist etc) the result is the same: boxes are there but appear empty.
I think I have read all threads concerning similar problems but don't seem to find a suitable solution. I was so looking forward to getting my new computer and being able to use mail 2 and now I've been stuck for days, with a huge waste of time. Why can't my intel core duo with tiger do what my little ibook with panther did so successfully and faithfully, albeit admittetly really slowly?
Needless to say I need to have all my messages exactly in the same mailboxes as I have them on my old comp, I certainly can't throw them into one huge box and sort them from there!
Any help will be greatly appreciated. I am even willing to spend a few bucks on any conversion program that can do the job (although after just purchasing the macbook I shouldn't have to spend anything more) just to avoid this incredible waste of time.
A faithful apple user who is getting kind of frustrated
    Diana

    Hello, Diana.
I think I have read all threads concerning similar problems
Have you read this in particular?
Help! "You need to take this account online in order to download it."
You won't find the solution to your problem there, but it should let you better understand it. In particular, if using Mail on the iBook under Mac OS X 10.3.9 is still an option, you may want to try to clean up your mailboxes there first, using the following article as a guidance:
    Overstuffed mailbox is unexpectedly empty
Before start troubleshooting this, you should make a backup copy of the ~/Library/Mail folder, just in case.
    Post back with your observations.

  • Need help solving listener and Oracle problems with Mac OS X 10.4 "Tiger"

I have Oracle 10g working on Mac OS X 10.4 "Tiger" except for the listener and Oracle net 8 configuration. I have not been able to get the Oracle listener to work with my built in Mac Airport wireless network card or built in ethernet card. I keep getting the errors
connection refused cannot start listener. Can anyone offer help?
    Thanks

    Hi Ben,
how does your listener.ora look like ?
    Mine is:
    LISTENER =
    (DESCRIPTION_LIST =
    (DESCRIPTION =
    (ADDRESS_LIST =
    (ADDRESS = (PROTOCOL = TCP)(HOST = ronald-g4-eth)(PORT = 1521))
    (ADDRESS = (PROTOCOL = TCP)(HOST = ronald-g4-wifi)(PORT = 1521))
and listens to the ethernet and airport address.
When do you get the problems ?

  • OK, I fed my mac a cup of coffee yesterday on Southwest Airlines yesterday and you know the rest of the story.  What should I do ?  It's an older pro with Tiger OS and this is my first attempt at using a forum to solve problems.

Spilled a cup of coffee on my Macbook Pro.  Sure don't want to lose my stuff.  Any suggestions? It's an old Tiger OS

Turn off the machine, remove the battery.
Extract the hard drive and use a IDE/SATA to USB adapter, connect it to your new Mac setup with the same user named account and transfer your files off.
    http://eshop.macsales.com/installvideos/
10.4 era issued machines have little value, not worth fixing, so dump it. Congrats on getting a nice long life out of it, it's rare to see that around here anymore.
I don't think Migration or Setup Assistant is going to work for such a older machine, 10.4 to 10.7 leap is rather large, I wouldn't risk it, none of the 10.4 software will work in 10.7 anyway.
So copy off files manually and do the best you can.

  • System lock-ups after upgrading to Tiger

This topic was previously posted in 'Installation & Setup'.
After 3 days (and 18 views) I got no replies.
Maybe that forum was not appropriate, so I decided to try it in this forum.
About 4 months ago I exchanged my 80 GB Hd in favor of an 200 GB Maxtor 6L200P0. One day later I upgraded OS X 10.3.9 to Tiger (retail DVD).
At that time I experienced a frequent (several times a day) lock-up of my system.
No messages, nothing, not even after powering down and restarting.
After some time I figured out that the lock-ups occurred on Internet access. Clicking on a link in Safari, posting messages on Discussions. Even Mail locked the system a few times. Also Corripio (artwork and lyrics finder for iTunes) caused the system to lock.
After that, I decided to perform an Archive & Install (first time after almost 4 years of using this Mac). Except from having to re-install a number of 3rd party apps. the system seemed to perform well. No lock-ups were experienced for a few weeks.
    Problem solved, I thought.
Although far less frequent than before, I do experience those annoying lock-ups a few times a week.
    Here are my questions:
What could be the cause of the lock-up?
Is is advisable to perform a Clean Install? What advantage do I have of, it opposite to performing an A&I. I'm reluctant to perform a clean install at the moment, because I haven't found a few serials of commercial and shareware applications yet ( I know, I should have written them down :-/ )
Any hints/tips to track down the exact cause?
    TIA
    M
P.S. ( I do have a bootable complete backup of my HD on an Maxtor Onetouch II )

    Hi, M.
    1. You wrote: "What could be the cause of the lock-up?"The number of potential causes range from disk corruption or bad applications to serious hardware problems, such as a defective logic board.
    2. You wrote: "Any hints/tips to track down the exact cause?"I suggest treating the "lock up" problem — better described as a "freezes and hangs" problem — similar to a kernel panic as the basic troubleshooting and hardware testing steps are virtually the same. See my "Resolving Kernel Panics" FAQ.
It provides a comprehensive roadmap which you should follow from beginning to end, in the order specified in the FAQ.
    2. You wrote: "Is is advisable to perform a Clean Install? What advantage do I have of, it opposite to performing an A&I."The term "Clean Install" does not apply in Mac OS X. That is obsolete Mac OS 9 terminology. The closest Mac OS X equivalent to a "Clean Install" is an Archive and Install with the Preserve User and Network Settings option, which it sounds like you've already tried once previously, but you may want to try again as part of the troubleshooting process I outlined above. See my "General advice on performing an Archive and Install" FAQ for some important tips on this process.
    The other options are:
    • Archive and Install without the Preserve User and Network Settings option: This reinstalls the OS and wipes out both your accounts and your network configuration, but preserves the previous System folder.
    • Erase and Install: Erases the hard drive, i.e. Macintosh HD, and reinstalls the OS from scratch, preserving nothing: your accounts, network settings, and everything else on the drive are deleted.
Of those two, and since you have a bootable backup, the second (Erase and Install) would be the second-to-last thing you would try, the last being taking the machine in for service.
    Good luck!

  • Going back to Tiger...

Is there anyone out there who can give me a good reason not to downgrade back to Tiger when I have the following issues:
    1. Photoshop 7 no longer works. Upgrade price is £700
    2. iCal 3 is dreadful compared to iCal in Tiger.
    3. Spotlight is absolutely dreadful compared to Tiger (specifically in terms of the layout and its ability to decide for you where it's searching).
    4. Illustrator 10 is unhappy.
    5. Finding networked computers is hit and miss... sometimes it finds them, sometimes it doesn't.
    6. Mail will only download files opened within Mail to the Mail Download folder.
    7....
The list goes on and on...
Someone (preferably from Apple) please reassure me that at least some of these issues are being sorted out... at least for the Mac apps like Mail, iCal, Spotlight (!!) and Finder...
Please! I'm an avid Mac fan but I'm currently so disappointed...
    Edward

    A Brody:
Thanks for your response! Just to cover your points:
    1. Adobe told me that they could not guarantee that Photoshop Elements would be compatible with the other Adobe products I have (which "basically" work with Leopard (i.e. Illustrator, InDesign etc.) Hence, they said my "only option" is to upgrade to CS3. I know I'm probably being a bit tight but £700 on 4-5 computers in my office is a lot of money...
    2. iCal: Go to the iCal user forum (e.g. here http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=6253569&#6253569) to see some of the gripes! Mainly it's about usability and lack of the sidebar (a function which has been removed) - the lack of sidebar makes it much more cumbersome to use. The user interface has taken a step backwards on a number of counts...
    3. Spotlight: my index is fine. Spotlight (and more importantly the 'search' box which appears when you select 'view all' "works" in that it finds everything... but the layout is now dreadful. It's gone from a neatly laid out arrangement delineated by images, documents, presentations etc. to one long list. Have a look here: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=6435106&#6435106 - this shows how the neat look of Spotlight has been replaced by mess! I know I can sort by kind but this will then categorise, say images as 'jpg', in one place, 'adobe jpeg' in another etc. And the image icons are tiny (as opposed to sensibly big in Tiger). I could use the coverflow facility to look but that gives me all the files to see as thumbnails not just images (say). Moreover, it's possible to limit the type of files you're searching for in the spotlight pull down menu (top right) but when you then say "show all" you then can't limit the files you then see... it shows everything! Simply, Tiger was much better.
    4. I appreciate that Adobe say Illustrator 10 was only "compatible" with 10.1 but it worked fine with absolutely no issues up to 10.4. It's now not so happy. As with the Photoshop issues, I know it's probably just time to upgrade but it's frustrating nonetheless that Leopard has caused it!
    6. Mail: when I say download I mean attachments - the thread I put a link on explains that when you open (doubleclick) an attachment from within Mail it saves that attachment to the Mail Downloads folder. This cannot be changed. If you press 'save' from within mail, you can decide where it saves it, but then you need to open it from wherever that is... which is an extra step! Grrr.
Hope that explains some of the points. My hope really is just to know that Apple are aware of the problems and that they are doing something about it. These forums are great if you have a problem that someone can help solve. But when you read 'that's a function that's no longer available' or similar, I then want to know if Apple are aware people are having issues. It would then be nice if they responded with either 'the reason it's changed is X' (where X is a good reason!) or 'we're working to rectify the situation'.
    Sigh!

  • Screen goes black when playing "Tiger Woods PGA Tour 08"

No need to mention that I am very happy with my new iMac. It replaces my G4 MDD PowerMac. The iMac is huge, quiet and fast on my graphic design jobs. I even won´t want to miss the glossy screen.
Yesterday I received the brand new "Tiger Woods PGA Tour 08". Keen on trying the game I installed and successfully created a player and got first practice shots but as soon as I try to actually start a game scenario, it appears that the scenario just only loads about 90 % and then screen goes black. From there I can only shut down my iMac with the power switch.
Now I found a support note on the EA Games Site. Title: "Why does "Tiger Woods PGA Tour 08" lock up with a black screen when playing on an iMac 7.1?" Answer: "This is caused by a driver issue with the video card that will be adressed by next system update by apple later this month."
Question: is this indeed so? Can I expect a system update soon? Anybody there with the same problem?
P.S.: I checked if I could run the game with a new user. Same problem.
    Thanks for help.

Thank you for replying. There are more postings in this forum about that issue. I.e. gamers trying to play Unreal Tournament suffer from the same freezing on the new 24" iMac. Have a look as well at the reviews in the US apple store on this game.
Solution is near. Installing 10.5 Leopard should solve the problem. As I do not want to install Leoprad yet, because some of my graphic apps will not run smoothly on leopard I have to wait for the next update for Tiger 10.4.11
Obviously EA Games is to blame and failed to test the game good enough before hand.

  • Going from iPhone 3GS to iPhone 5 and Mac OSX Tiger

    Hello,
I currently have one of the first Intel Mac Book Pro's running OSX Tiger.  I also have a 3GS running ios 4.1 which I'm about to upgrade to the iPhone 5.
What is the best way to back-up/transfer my contacts/txt's/etc from my 3GS to my 5?  I can't run the latest version of iTunes and eventually this year I will upgrade to a new iMac which would solve the problem...but for now I would like to transfer all my data over.
    Thanks,
    Mike

The problem with that is my current iphone is running ios 4.1 and my laptop is running tiger so I don't have icloud.  Without upgrading to snow leopard and then to lion/mountian lion to get icloud is there any other option?

  • I give up. Have had a problem with HD Bay 4, and can't solve it

I have had my Mac Pro for a year, through Tiger and now Leopard, and it has been a great machine... except. From the night I un-boxed it, it has refused to run a drive in bay 4. it partitions fine, looks fine, and then when copying something (say a 10G folder), it starts fine for about 500meg, estimates about 10 min. All OK. But then it slows down, never gets past about 1 G, and the highest time estimate I have seen is 80 hours, The drive in bay 3 is not affected, though the machine is noticeably slower whenever moving from one drive to another is involved. Removing the drive restores all to normal. But the drive is semi permanently damaged, in that it has something written on it that is very hard to fix. I have been most successful converting it to USB. This has happened over at least 10 drives ( I have lots of spares from old legal work, all SATA 2). I have let this go for this long because I have Apple care, and I didn't need the space. But as I am winding down my working career, and pursuing my photography hobby more, this space is now an issue. I have been reading of "resetting", but nothing I have tried has worked as described, except for the PRAM, which did help another small problem. Before I call Apple care, do any of you have any suggestions? I just hate to send the machine for service if it is something that can be 'reset with something I don't know about. By the way, I used a little adapter to hook up SATA's 5 and 6, and they act the same. So in effect. 1 and 2 are normal, and 3 is ok if there is no 4. Go figure.
Thanks in advance for any consideration, Art Colley in Baton Rouge.

Really sorry for the long paragraph, not my usual way, but hopefully it really doesn't matter, does it?
I have tried service, but my recently opened Mac store will not give me an appointment because they are booked up forever, and they will not allow me to talk to anyone. Didn't tell that part, because it was pretty shoddy, I thought, and really didn't help. Calling Apple care is next on the agenda.
I waited otherwise for the reasons i described, and because I knew I had plenty of coverage.
But your comment, about the SMC button was helpful, if I knew what that was.
As to the specifics, Bays 1 and 2 form a RAID0, currently with 2 500 GB WD's, but that has not always been the case. I have tried non RAID configs just in case, and posted on this forum several times last summer.
All of the drives have been moved around a lot, and all that have been in Bay 4 have had the issue. Currently there is a "rescued" Seagate 750 in Bay 3. Nothing in Bay4.
I also agree about the external drives, using currently 2 eSATA with a PCIe controller, both Seagate, 1TB and 1 750. Also 1 500 WD my book on FW800, and one Seagate 750 on USB.
Then the drives that I would love to use somewhere if I can solve this issue, as I look at them now, and: Seagate 320, originally came with the machine (3), Maxtor 120G (2) from other machines,Seagate 160G (3) from other machines, and a Samsung 160 from my HP workstation.
Except for when they are in the RAID array (and don't report SMART), all of these drives report fine in DU, including SMART, as long as they are not in Bay 4, or in the bay6 (5 and 6 are both Intel SATA controllers, listed in "about this Mac, but hidden on the motherboard). In bay 4 and 6 they report just fine until they are used the first time.
All have been thoroughly prepped before use, as described, and as I said once one is "contaminated" by bay4, I usually have to do it with a temporary USB connection before going back to the SATA hookup. In SATA they will neither erase, nor partition, nor repair and verify.
So that's the long and short of it.
Please tell me more about the SMC button you refer to. I assume this discussion board is the best place to learn about such items, and I thank you for your advise and help. Just remember, I do not know what you know, or I wouldn't be asking. Even some of the abbreviations, though familiar, escape me.
Hope you find this more helpful, because I really do need help, and I have confidence in these discussion forums, having used them in several other fields (both as the helper and the helpee!).
Regards, Art Colley in Baton Rouge.

  • My experience with Tiger/new Powerbook 15", 1.67 ghz

Apple proclaims "Mac OS X v10.4 Tiger. The world’s most advanced operating system."
Well, that hasn't been the case in my experience.
I bought a new 15 Powerbook HR, 1.67 ghz, 1.5 gb ram, 80gb hd on 11/4/05 (from MacMall). At this point I have about 20gb free.
Problems I have noticed with it/OSX.(Most have been fixed by an archive and install done a few weeks ago.) Here's my trial by fire.
    In chronological order
    - trackpad lags
    - many icons not correct after using Migration Assistant.
    - some icons open up the wrong applications
    - window resize button on Finder, and some app windows, doesn't open window to full screen. Also doesn't open window so that scroll bars disappear.
    - dragging a file up or down a window in list view doesn't always make the window scroll up or down when I go up or down to the top or bottom edges. When they do move, it races. Smooth scrolling has no effect.
    - CDr recorded on a machine with OSX 10.3.9 shows up as a recordable CD!
    - screen dims when I disconnect power supply
-Network option from the Go menu does nothing.
    - Doing a Get Info on a html file has Internet Explorer as the app to open when the files have Mozilla icons
    - icon for some apps have wrong application logo on them
    - screen dims and brightens rapidly, disconcertingly in low light. I turn off the ambient light adjustment on the monitors control panel. This is poorly implemented. Having the keys light up is nice though.
    - can't reset F7 key to take pictures of screen. (I eventually am able to do it.)
    - the clicker gives me a sharp pain in my arm from the second day of use. This has gotten better now but I was worried I might be getting carpal tunnel/repetitive stress injury. (This happened when I got my new Powerbook Firewire too, eventually going away.) The clickers are too stiff when new.
    - I call Applecare. They don't have my registration information I gave them when I signed up on the web. We reset the Power Manger.
    - Quicktime movies have no sound. I later throw out the LAME stuff (Component and Framework) and get sound back.
    - I go to Genius at Apple Store. They tell me I am using a non-native resolution, that is why I am having screen dimming. (Wrong. It was the ambient light control.) They also say whatever software I have installed is likely to be causing most of the other problems.
    - I get Finder freeze #1
    - Preview does not animate gifs. It did with 10.3.9.
-System sounds do not work. Upon reboot they do. Flakey.
    - some finder windows are not opening up with the item count in list view.
    -desktop gets rearranged
-occasionally keyboard turns letters into numbers as if number lock is on. It isn't. The it will stop working altogether. Rebooting cures this. (Happens twice before I call AppleCare.)
    - call AppleCare. They have my old address when I bought the Powerbook! I get registered again.I cannot install GarageBand, which I threw out thinking I didn't need it, because the install DVDs that came with my machine have an error reading the software only package. They will send me a new install disk #1.
    - scrolling is not smooth, races.
    - I notice the memory door has 3 out of the 4 screws loose. I tighten them. The battery door feels a little loose too but that is unfixable.
    - keyboard doesn't respond #3
    - I call AppleCare. They have the wrong address still in their database!
-eject DVD does not work. (It works all other times.)
    - system freeze #2
    - kernal panic #1
    - Call AppleCare. My TechTool Deluxe CD will not boot. I ask for a replacement. (I can't believe they are still using TechTool Deluxe. I remember what a hassle it was trying to get a working disc with my Powerbook Firewire.
    - keyboard types wrong characters #4
-Print preview does not work. (it does all other times.)
-Preference for video capture program (BTV) is not remembered
    - audio is only heard when BTV is running (since fixed.)
    - system freeze #3
    - keyboard stops working #5
    - I call Apple Care. We zap P-ram 3X.
    - file sizes incorrect in list view. Have to open window a second time to get correct info.
    - install DVD #1 arrives. It is defective.
    - system freeze #4
    - I update to 10.4.4. I hope this will cure the problems. Nope.
    - Help doesn't work.
    - Battery firmware update process works but isn't smooth. It crashes "unexpectedly" as I check to make sure it is really done. (It kept telling me I needed to do it.)
    - Help works.
    - boot takes forever after 10.4.4 update.
    - battery firmware update wants to run again.
    - file size is wrong in finder list view windows.
    - keyboard stops working #6
    - fan stops yet processor is still VERY busy as I am calibrating battery. Charge is about 5%.
    - I quit IMovie, It then says it quit "unexpectedly". (This happens with other apps still.)
    - I have to use power key to wake it from sleep, as I calibrate battery.
    - keyboard problem #7
    - system freeze # 5
    - text editing in iDVD is very buggy. Cursor is impossible to see against background with many themes. There is no way to increase cursor size.
    - AppleCare says they have sent TechTool Deluxe CD. I haven't gotten it yet.
    - I receive install disk #1. 2 actually. I install software bundle only. It works! I also reinstall CPU help files. Help still doesn't work.
    - I archive and install. (It installs 10.4.2 so I update to 10.4.4), Help doesn't work.
    - Help works without my having done anything. OK.
    - I repair a gazillion permissions. (funny how when you install the system software the permissions then need to be repaired. You would think the system would know to set the permissions correctly upon installation.
    - I notice the order of the right hand menu items has changed (clock, keyboard setup, OS 9 icon...)
    - file sizes wrong in list view
    - BTV has audio loop at times. (See thread on Topic "New Powerbook Audio Stutter / Looping / Echo problem in Using your PowerBook G4 15-inch Aluminum forum.)
    - keyboard problem #8
    - keyboard problem #9
    - I call AppleCare. TechTool Deluxe CD has still not arrived. We discuss other problems. I get hung up on.
    -keyboard problem #10
    - I go to Apple Store. Talk to the genius. He tells me the system software is "a house of cards", adding other software can cause unpredictable results. He zaps P-ram 3x, does something in open firmware. Recommends a clean install. I think about it and later decide not to.
    - I lose system sounds after I install USBVison video capture driver for Tiger. I eventually get it back.
    - I repair LOTS of permissions.
    - The fan starts to make bad noise.
    - system freeze $6
    - I do a Get Info on a file I making with BTV. The OS tells me it is 11GB. I stop the recording and then I check again. It says it is 1.5 gb.
-iChat won't open. It starts, according to Activity Monitor, runs for about two seconds and then disappears.
    - Network, under the Go menu, does nothing.
    - I call AppleCare.
    - I notice cursor disappears in Firefox.
    - Yahoo IM icon keeps getting moved. All the icons it is next to are spaced about the same but this one keeps getting moved.
    - I Stuff some stuff. The fan keeps running, it is still hot after I am finished. I have to reboot to get things back to normal.
    - Some icons for PING files on my desktop have changed from having Preview icons to Quicktime icons. I use Get Info to change them back from Picture Viewer (OS 9!)
    - the fan comes on with only my normal apps running (Eudora, Firefox, Yahoo IM)
Ok, that is about all up 'til now. I still haven't gotten my TechTool Deluxe CD but need to give that a few more days. I now have 8 install DVDs. (Another install #1 came yesterday, making a total of 6 #1, and 2 #2s) The address on the invoices are finally correct, most had the wrong town but the right zip code which I had corrected many times.
The problems that are still recurring are the keyboard problem, applications still sometimes crash "unexpectedly" even though I am quitting them, the file sizes are not right the first time around in finder list view windows. Most everything else was cured by the archive and install. Little weirdnesses still crop up though. I am not sure if the echo problem has been fixed. (Mac OS) Help is still slow to appear.
Thanks for bearing with me. I do hope things get smoother in the future. I have been using Macs for about 10 years now, starting with a used SE and 7.something, going to a refurbished LC 580 and 7.5.5, a new Powerbook Firewire and 9.2.2. I have also used 10.3.9 which seemed to be a lot more stable than 10.4.
    Cheers,

If it was me I would backup to DVD/ External HD if you have and erase / reinstall OSX.
Update all and once you are finished without the user folder / any of your files on torture the Pbook to see if this happens again.
This likely will be able to give you an idea about hardware or software problems.
If all is well , likely not then copy "COPY" over from the backup you "ONLY COPY" documents, music, Photo's, desktop stuff and also place programs back in Applications folder.
The reason for the above is that in the /user/"you"/library folder it stores the settings for Icon's, prefferences to programs and some other useless stuff + E-mails for either Mac Mail and or Microrubish Entorture "entourage" depending on what you have or used also Itunes prefs.
Once this is copied leave the "/user/you/library" stuff alone and see how it runs.
App's/programs will ask to have it's preferences set again as if /when you have installed it for the first time.
Likely most of the issues if software was in the/becuase of the settings in "/user/you/library".
If this solves a lot of problems the go with care and copy the "E-MAIL +/OR ENTORUTE/ENTOURAGE + ITUNES" to the same place as where they came from but obviously in /user/you/library/ subfolders etc. same subfolders.
For Entorture search for a file called "database" as this holds all the e-mail for entourage and by copying it, when you next open Entorture it will pick-up all emails + adresses etc like it was never moved also in the same spot as it was in the new instalation / subfolders etc..
If all this fails and you as close to what I reccomended here, there is then still some issues then likely it is hardware related.
How do I know this : Had for 5 times in 365 days had my Pbook in for repair so I have had to about 120+ times had to reinstall OSX 10.3.9 and/or Tiger.
I hope this helps as for hardware I am buying Alienware or Extreme as they can upgrade the cpuvideobasically all else except the motherboard " amd opteron 64 dualcore + Nvidia fx quadro 1400 + 1 or 2 hd's + 1/2 dvd's etc. etc. $2500"
