ABAP objects - basic ques

Hi all,
I need to display the fields of the structure USR_ROLE_Z by using the method DESCRIBE_BY_NAME of the class CL_ABAP_TYPEDESCR and then get the attribute COMPONENTS of the instanciated object of the class CL_ABAP_STRUCTDESCR.
The method DESCRIBE_BY_NAME of the class CL_ABAP_TYPEDESCR has the following parameters:
P_NAME          importing     typed           ANY
P_DESCR_REF     returning     typed ref to     CL_ABAP_TYPEDESCR
The class CL_ABAP_STRUCTDESCR is inherited from the class CL_ABAP_TYPEDESCR.
The class CL_ABAP_STRUCTDESCR has an attribute COMPONENTS typed ABAP_COMPDESCR_TAB (internal table)
The ABAP_COMPDESCR_TAB has the structure ABAP_COMPDESCR.
The structure ABAP_COMPDESCR contains the following fields:
     LENGTH               typed           I
     DECIMALS               typed           I
     TYPE_KIND(1)          typed          C
     TYPE_NAME(30)          typed          C
How do i write the above programatically?

I am not sure about what you mean by "... display fields of structure ..." yet the basic coding to extract metadata from you structure looks like this:
" Describe structure
go_sdescr ?= cl_abap_structdescr=>describe_by_name( 'USR_ROLE_Z' ).
LOOP AT go_sdescr->components INTO gs_component.
" Here you have basic technical data about the structure fields
ENDLOOP.

I have a report that is written right now using procedural abap and a logical database. The report is structured follows (high level):

end-of-selection.
call function 'reuse_alv_grid_display'

So basically I'm going through a bunch of personnel numbers, getting a few infotypes and outputting to ALV. I don't see where ABAP Objects is going to help me for this particular program.
Can somebody show me where OO ABAP would make this easier? Does it even make sense to use OO when you're processing with a logical database? (Not just PNP, but any logical database in general).

The class CL_PT_EMPLOYEE provides us already with very easy access to so-called master infotypes (000, 0001, 0002, 0007 and 0008). All other infotypes can be read using method GET_INFOTYPES.
Using these classes we have a very convenient and standardized way of accessing all kinds of infotypes.

How to implement Strategy pattern in ABAP Objects?

Hello,
I have a problem where I need to implement different algorithms, depending on the type of input. Example: I have to calculate a Present Value, sometimes with payments in advance, sometimes payment in arrear.
From documentation and to enhance my ABAP Objects skills, I would like to implement the strategy pattern. It sounds the right solution for the problem.
Hence I need some help in implementing this pattern in OO. I have some basic OO skills, but still learning.
Has somebody already implemented this pattern in ABAP OO and can give me some input. Or is there any documentation how to implement it?

Hi Krish and Sudhansu,
Design patterns are solutions which are already verified and known by many developers. That is why it is worth to use them. There is no need to reinvent the wheel in many cases.
I would recommend book which is placed in the ABAP world:

Although Java language has intuitive syntax, there are some special things in ABAP development so it is better to check solutions adjusted for ABAP editor.
The most common usage of factory pattern is to simplify object creation.
- By one method call you provide required parameters and do all initializations, including dependent objects.
- Class can have many factory methods, if you want to provide more ways of initialization.
- Factory method is usually static in the class and they return initialized instance of object for this class.
- There is naming convention to start factory method name with "create" - easy to recognize pattern.
- If you set property of class to "private instantiation" then you force to use factory method for object creation. In this way it is really simple to find all places where object are created with given set of input parameters - find references of factory method.
Factory pattern becomes even more powerful if we add inheritance. Factory method returns basic object (like ZCL_VEHICLE) but its implementation can return different subclass instance, depending on input parameter (ZCL_CAR, ZCL_TRAIN etc). Each instance can implement differently behavior (methods implementation), but these are object oriented techniques.

ABAP Objects with Workflows / Classes and Instances

Hello,
I am currently designing a workflow using an ABAP-Objects. So far I have been been able to get my Workflow to run with my class, but I have a couple of problems:
- I am using the Function 'SAP_WAPI_START_WORKFLOW' to start other subflows, which enables me to decide which subflow to start at runtime. All of the subflows have standart importing-parameters in their containers, such as the key of my class. In each workflow I instantiate my class using a self-written method, which checks the table T_INSTANCES in my object, and then either returns the object reference to an existing instance or creates a new one. Obviously all of the subflows that I call from my main workflow should be able to find the instance. As far as I can see in their protocolls, this happens without any problems. The problem starts when I make changes to the instance. For example the changing of attributes (with setter methods) seems not to work. After the subflows are finished, in my main workflow, I do not see (with getter methods) any changes that has been made to the object. Is local persistence really limited to one workflow ?
- My second problem is basically about the workflow container in workflow protocoll. In the same workflow, I can change the attributes of my object. Nevertheless, the protocoll always show the initial attribute, even though, my task with the getter-method returns the new value of the attribute.

Thank you for your answer. I think we are misunderstanding each other. The problem occurs (I think) because my class is not a singleton class. Or am I mistaken ?
When I directly start a subflow from my main workflow, then the instance that I have created in my main workflow is also visible to the subflow. As well as the static table which actually keeps track of the instances. So, in this case the subflows finds the instance and then can use the object as is.
When I start a subflow from my main workflow using the function I mentioned above, then even though the same object key is used, there is a new instance. And the static table (I assume that you mean a static variable from type table, when you say "class table") is completely empty. In this case, my "new" instance is created which overwrites every attribute that I have set in the main workflow, before I started the subflow. More interestingly, my main workflow instantiates another new object, as soon as the subflow has finished. (I am using an event to wait for the subflow to finish.)
On the other hand, I am not quite sure that I understood your approach with refresh and how it could help me. This method is not well documented anywhere, and all of the examples that I have found are about "leave it empty"
As far as I understood, this method is called by the workflow between the steps, when an object is used. I slowly start to think that I need advanced information about Workflows and Memory Management.

Methods in ABAP Objects - Example
The following example shows how to declare, implement, and use methods in ABAP Objects.
Overview
This example uses three classes called C_TEAM, C_BIKER, and C_BICYCLE. A user (a program) can create objects of the class C_TEAM. On a selection screen, the class C_TEAM asks for the number of members of each team.
Each object in the class C_TEAM can create as many instances of the class C_BIKER as there are members in the team. Each instance of the class C_BIKER creates an instances of the class C_BICYCLE.
Each instance of the class C_TEAM can communicate with the program user through an interactive list. The program user can choose individual team members for actions. The instances of the class C_BIKER allow the program user to choose the action on a further selection screen.
Constraints
The ABAP statements used for list processing are not yet fully available in ABAP Objects. However, to produce a simple test output, you can use the following statements:

The references to the newly-created instances are inserted into the private internal table BIKER_TAB. After the method has been executed, each line of the internal table contains a reference to an instance of the class C_BIKER. These references are only visible within the class C_TEAM. External users cannot address the objects of class C_BIKER.
CREATE_TEAM also calls the method STATUS_LINE for each newly-created object, and uses the work area STATUS_LINE to append its output parameter LINE to the private internal table STATUS_LIST.

The program contains three class reference variables that refer to the class C_TEAM. It creates three objects from the class, to which the references in the reference variables then point. In each object, it calls the method CREATE_TEAM. The method CLASS_CONSTRUCTOR of class C_TEAM is executed before the first of the objects is created. The status TEAMLIST for the basic list allows the user to choose one of four functions:
When the user chooses a function, the event AT USER-COMMAND is triggered and public methods are called in one of the three instances of C_TEAM, depending on the users choice. The user can change the state of an object by selecting the corresponding line in the status list.

ABAP Objects - real example

Hello everybody,
can someone please navigate me to some "real example" of using abap objects?
I went through demos in sap (I am using SAP R/3 4.6C) in transaction ABAPDOCU, I have a book Horst Keller: Abap Objects (where partially the object orientation is written), I am reading articles in SAP professional journal or on web www.erpsapgenie.com, etc.
This is all nice, but no real example can I find.
What I mean with real example:
For example report, where I select data from database ("select *.." or "get ..." etc.), put this data to internal table, maintenance these data, output these data.
Or: in dialog programming write simple dialog, get data from PBO/PAI, put to into it, write data to database table, etc.
I have tryed the first case: simple, but meaningfull report, and I start to struggle with problems - if I will have internal table it should be variable of given class, and the table will be in interfase? Or it should be in some "global class main" - but - it is recomended to have as possible protected/private data - so if I will have global data it is worse programming behaviour the to use old procedural approach...
So generally, WHERE are some examples, where all standard behaviour of procedural programming is shown? - like
- put data to internal table/get if from it,
- communication with dialog modules/calling selection screen,
- open text file in present. server, 
- preparing data for batch input processing, 
- exist abap objects equivalent of logical databases or (we, application programmers) have to write it by ourselves? 
- where are some real programs in R/3 4.6C, which are written fully object oriented? (but please not in HR module )
- etc.
Are these things available to use in version R/3 4.6C?

SmartForms and ABAP Objects

Hi all,
I'm trying to use ABAP Objects with smartforms. The thing is that whenever I need to display an object attribute, I have to call a getter method (say object->getSomeAttribute for example), assign the return to a global variable in the smartform, then assign that variable to the text node. I would like to know if there is a way to avoid this and do like we usually would do for field in a structure, i.e. assign sommeStrucutre-someField directly to a text node without using a global variable. Thank you in advance.

Design Pattern and ABAP Objects

I would like to know, if ABAP Objects can be used to do pattern oriented programming ?
For example GANG of four has provided almost more then 30 design pattern ( MVC, singelton, Obserable, FACADE,,,etc) can we implement patterns using ABAP ??

Take a look at the following site:

It has all the basic patterns from the GOF and a lot more. I can recommend the ones from Martin Fowler but be sure you start with the ones from the GOF.
All patterns are described by using UML so it's very easy to translate them into ABAP OO code.
Regarding your other question. For the observer pattern I used an interface which the SAP had already created if_cm_observer and created my own abstract observable class. The observable class is nearly a 100% copy of the java.util. one

There are a couple of examples programs, You can start by checking out transaction DWDM for some of the basic ABAP oo controls. You can also check out any program which begins with BCALV* for examlple of ALV grids, trees, and lists.
