Access Connections Location profiler

This really confuses me.
I think it is a brilliant idea, that a location profile could choose your printer, your default homepage etc.
But I have a suspicion, that location is identified by the network MEDIA present, not the infrastructure.
I cannot be the only user who has wired as well as wifi at work AND at home !?
The network at work and at home should be identified by IP address, not media type.
Nevertheles my T410i gets the two locations mixed up.
If I exclusively connect by cable at work and by wifi at home, it seems to work.
Any ideas?
Søren

I found the solution on a similar issue from another post...
REMEMBER: Even after you make the following changes, you have to reboot the laptop in order to have the changes effective. I also delete all the existing Location Profiles so it starts from scratch.
For Access Connections to recognize the IP subnet in the Location Prpfiles, you have to make sure that "Include Ethernet connections in automatic switching and prompt me to save Ethernet ports" open is checked.
- open AC->Tools->Location Switching, you will see the option at the top of the window. You can also check the saved ports record by click on the "Edit Saved Ports.." button at the bottom of the window.
Hope this help!

  • Access connections previous profile loaction?

    Hello All,
this has likely been posted before, but i'm new to the community. I am about to reimage a t400, and the user that machine belongs to has about 6 or 7 wireless profiles configured in access connections..
My question is before I image I would like to save all these profiles and copy them to an external drive, however I dont know where to look for these ohter custom wireless profiles. Any ideas?

    Hi,
sorry I kind of was late with the respond, and accually it was such an easy one.
I assume, that you have used the export function of Access Connection.
Pelase let me know, what methjod did you used.

  • T23 Access Connection "Create Profile" problem !

    Greetings All,
I'm attempting to setup the profile section. The "Find Network" button is unresponsive. I even manually entered the SSID and none of the other fields are fillable. Version is 5.85. Have "allow all users" checked to create profiles. I also do believe I have all other software required installed. Any expertise appreciated.

    Mornsgrans,
Thanks for the help. I guess I won't be able to use AC on this T23 as the only device I have is the Ethernet card "Intel PRO/100 VE Network Connection" which is for the RJ-45 port. The only wireless device is our Linksys cardbus 54g card. I have a PSREF sheet for the T23's and it says some have a Mini PCI 11b Wi-fi wireless card, I guess this one(2647-2TU) is without.
If I've missed something, advice appreciated.

  • Access Connections 5 and up issues

    Hi,
For years our organization has been using Access Connections 4.52 flawlessly.  Recently we purchased a boat load of R500 notebooks.  At this point, we were forced to upgrade to version 5.20 as 4.52 will not recognize the wireless card.
With 4.52, when a client would boot up wireless and attempt to login to our network , Access Connections would pop up, then attempt the login only AFTER it has connected to the network.  With 5.20, 5.33 and 5.50, this function seems to work ok until I sysprep the image.
After I sysprep our image, this is what happens:  User boots up wireless and attempts to login to our network....gets and error stating "OURDOMAIN is not available"....15 seconds later Access Connections wakes up and connects to the wireless network.  Now, here is the really dumb part.  I can resolve the issue on my image by opening Access Connections > Location Profiles > Select Profile > Edit > OK.   Access Connections will now behave properly, until I sysprep.
Is there any solution out there for this?  Or even better, is there a way I can make 4.52 work on a newer model.  4.52 did not have this issue.
    Thanks
    Rosy

    Hi,
I cannot see it being fair, to blaim Access Connection for situation, that is clearly not caused by Access Connection.
In the past I was working with multiple corporate images, which I of course had to create, which included syspreping the image. And I can tell you, that sysprepping a 100% working image is always, and I really mean ALLWAYS screwing up some part of the image. If you have been doing images for longer time, then surelly you will be agreed with me.
If you are not, then you have not created enough images manually (I mean starting with the times of RIS, going through WDS, IUB, SCCM .... ).
So much for understanding, where to look when you are looking for the root cause.
So Access Connection is a tool, that depends on other applications and driver. Almost the same as by all other TVT applicaitons. For Access Connection it's highly important, that it's installed in following order together with other tools/drivers:
    1) Power Managerment driver
    2) Power Manager
    3) System Interface driver
    4) Hotkey utility/driver
    5) LAN Driver
    6) WLAN driver
    7) WWAN driver
    8) Access Connection
It's highly important, that this order is kept.
So back to the imaging, here is what might happen, when you sysprep the image:
    - you sysprep it, where some parts (usually ini files) are remoted from the dirver installed on the machine.
    - of course you configure the sysprep to load up all the drivers depending on the HW, or some input from the client
    - this will load everything back and inclusiv all the drivers
    ISSUE:
    - WLAN, driver is installed/inicialized after Access Conenction was present in the image
    - by syspreping some of the above menitoned applications from Lenovo are taken as drivers and therefore, they are re-installed only after sysprep kicks-in
I'm pretty sure, that you know, how you install you image and by some points you might not be agreed with what I'm writing, but I was working with the informations, that I could find in your description.
I think more description on the sysprep, or the imaging tool and structure might help me imagine, what is goin on.
BTW: I just remembered, that by olders versions of AC 2.x and 3.x when such issue was present, like also LAN was not detected and all this happened after I installed a corporate image, then my fix for the image was quite simple:
Reinstall all the above drivers + apps in the order as you can see it in here .
    Cheers

  • Updated to Access Connections 5.02 and location profiles disappeared

After updating Access Connections from 4.52 to 5.02 all the wireless location profiles are gone, including WEP keys, etc.  The old version of AC worked fine on my X61S.
    1) How can one upgrade to AC 5 without losing these?
    2) I have complete system backups.  In what file or registry entry can I find the saved location profiles from 4.52?

Same thing happened to me. Most frustrating...
I was able to find a listing of the now-missing profiles in "HKLM\SOFTWARE\Lenovo\Access Connections\Locations". Using regedit, I removed the following DWORD key, "m_bHideInList", from each entry and all of my location profiles now appear in Access Connections again as they were before. Looks like there also are a variety of other (rather straightforward) configuration parameters in the registry key(s) listed above, so hopefully something in there is the magic bullet.
    Anyway, hope this helps.
C'mon Lenovo -- this seems to be sloppy coding, pure and simple. You're better than this!

  • Unable to edit or delete profile in Access Connection 5

    Hi Everybody!
I'm unable to edit or delete profiles in Access Connection on my T41 running latest Access Connection v5.
The edit and delete buttons on the Access Connection Profile menu are shown only in light grey color and it's not possible to click them. I have administrator rights on my machine. These profiles were initially migrated from a very old v3 (automatically during system update) and I guess that this is one of the root causes of my problem.
I have also tried to use the QCTRAY.EXE /DEL command, but that's also not working. The profiles just remain there unchanged.
I would be very pleased if somebody could give me a hint on how to overcome this boring problem.
    Best regards,
    Helmut
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

v3 profiles are not compatible with v5.
The best solution in your case would be to uninstall Access Connections with profiles and then reinstall and create new profiles.

  • Access Connections Admin Enabler

    Hi,
A couple questions about Admin Enabler.  Is there a way to create a distribution package to delete existing profiles?  I have a profile on a bunch of systems I want to replace.  I have tried creating a distribution package which includes a profile with the exact same name.  The result is that the existing profile is just renamed ProfileName(1)  and the new profile is created in addition.
Alternatively, is there a way to create a distribution package that can simply modify an existing profile?  Specifically, we need to remove the "override proxy configuration" check box in all of our profiles as it removes the proxy settings we push out with group policy.
It would be nice in future versions if  "override proxy configuration" wasn't checked by default when creating a profile.  We spent days trying to figure out why group policy wasn't applying our proxy settings on certain computers, only to find that Group Policy in fact was applying the proxy settings, and Access Connections was removing them as its default setting is to override the Proxy Settings....just my 2 cents.
    Thanks
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

    Hi,
unfortunately there is no option to create a distribution package, that will delete a network profile.
You can do it using the command line option, or if you delete it manually from the registry.
I assume, as you are using multiple systems, you will go with the command line option, which I of course preffer when I have to perform such task on multiple machines. This is easy to do, as you just created a simple script/batch file which will execute this command.
In case you want to change only this one setting, then you can do it also form the registry:
    - go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Lenovo\Access Connections\Locations\Alcatel\AdptList\Adpt00
    - delete the following key: m_bSetBrowserPxySettings
After you delete this key, the "Override proxy configuration" check box will be unchecked/deactivated.
In fact, there is an option, on how to prohibit this option while a new AC profile gets created.
For this purpose you need to apply the ADM file for Access connection, which can be downloaded here:
    XP:
    http://download.lenovo.com/ibmdl/pub/pc/pccbbs/mobiles/acplgin45.exe
    Vista and Win7:
    http://download.lenovo.com/ibmdl/pub/pc/pccbbs/mobiles/acplgin50.exe
    - once you apply this ADM file, you can configure this on following place in the GPO:
    Computer Configuration\Administrative Templates\Lenovo ThinkVantage Components\Access Connections
    - in this "folder" you will see the option "Override proxy configuration during new profile cration" and once you set it to "Disable", then this option will be always dissabled, when a user will create a new AC profile.
In case you are not really ok with the ADM file option, then (as I assume you already know) you can import this key into every client system, which will kind of simulate the same, as you performed using GPO:
    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Lenovo\AccessConnection]
    "DefaultOverrideProxyConfig"=dword:00000000
I hope, this should help you out.
In case you have any additional questions, then please let me know. I'll try to help also with other questions.
Otherwise, please feel free to mark this thread as fixed.
    Cheers

  • Access Connections - Autostart Programs - Always Twice

    Hi,
I'm using AC for automatically starting programs (Outlook, Firefox) in my work environment. It's done by a cmd file that works great.
But: It really often happens (maybe always), that the cmd file is beeing executed twice, so I'm seeing two windows for each started program. This is a Bug, right?
    Can anybody help?
    Thx in advance
    Axl
    AC: 5.72
    Win 7 32 Bit

I believe I have found the cause.
I noticed the same thing happening when I switched to a Profile...each of my "Start applications automatically" commands was being executed twice.
I used RegEdit to explore the Registry (careful, changing Registry values can be hazardous to your computer's health), by navigating to key \HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Lenovo\Access Connections\Locations\ProfileNameGoesHere\AdptList, where I saw two Adapters (Adpt00 and Adpt01) - one for the WAN Adapter and one for the WLAN Adapter.
Each Adapter has the same set of keys...
    AvayaProfileSettings
    BrowserPxySettings
    StartupAppList
    VpnSettings
(except the WLAN Adapter also has a "SsidList" key).
Our commands are stored under StartupAppList. Each custom command has its own key, called App00, App01, etc. Within the AppNN key are several keys; you will recognize your command as the value to the key called "m_szAppName".
Even though the Access Connections app only lets you configure commands at the Profile level, it stores the commands in the Registry at the Adapter level (and there can be multiple Adapters per Profile). So if you have two adapters for the Profile (WAN & WLAN), the commands are stored twice. And therefore (incorrectly) executed twice when you switch to that Profile.
You can use the following steps to see if your Access Connections behaves the same as mine. Carefully using RegEdit, navigate to
    \HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Lenovo\Access Connections\Locations\,
then choose the name of a Profile that is giving you problems,
    then navigate to AdptList.
You'll see 2 Adapters (Adpt00 & Adpt01). Navigate to Adpt00 then to StartupAppList. You'll see an AppNN entry for each of your commands for this Profile.
Now navigate to the same key path, except make it Adpt01 instead of Adpt00. You'll see the same number of AppNN keys.
Now, using the Access Connections app, edit that same Profile. Add an additional dummy application to run...something safe like Notepad.exe (navigate through the folders/menus to select it). Save your changes.
Now go back to RegEdit. Hit [F5] to refresh your Registry display. You will now see a new AppNN entry, for the Notepad command. Go into it, and look at the value for key "m_szAppName". It will have a path ending in "\notepad.exe" - the app that you just chose.
Assuming you were just looking at the "Adpt01" key, navigate to the equivalent key path under "Adpt00", and you will see the same new AppNN key, the same new "m_szAppName" entry, with the same value (a path ending in "\notepad.exe").
If you "connect" using this Profile, Notepad will start twice.
    So...the solution?
My problems probably started when I wanted to "do the right thing" and convert a Profiles from being simply a WLAN-type profile to a "Best Available Network" Profile, which allows it to use the LAN adapter as well. Doing so enables both the WAN adapter and the WLAN adapter...each of them has a check mark by it when you edit the Profile in the Access Connections app.
My solution was to go through all my Access Connections Profiles (if you see Profiles with Type "Multi" instead of "WAN", "WLAN", "Modem", etc., the "Multi"s are the ones you want to select), edit them, and un-check the Adapter that I don't need for that Profile. If I only connect using WiFi, not with Ethernet cable, then I deselect WAN.
If you have a Profile where you actually do use multiple Adapters to connect to the network, and you run special commands when connecting to that network, and you want the same settings to apply regardless of which Adapter you are using, you still might consider making a 2nd copy of your exiting Profile. Turn one into a WAN-only Profile, and the other into a WLAN-only Profile. Of course, if you ever edit something (like change the default printer, for example), you'll have to make the same edit to each of the Profiles in the set.
Hope this helps. I don't think this was intended behavior by the Access Connections Developers, but being a Developer myself, I know how easy it is for small design problems to sneak into some well-intentioned software.
    Thanks
    Steve

  • Restrict SSID in Access Connections?

Here at my company we have two wireless networks available in the building.
"guest": allows access to internet outside the DMZ
    "internal": allows access to intranet
We want to restrict access to "guest" for our internal users. ls there a way to restrict access to the "guest" wireless network in AC?
    Any help would be great.
    Thanks!

    Hi,
in case you already have this profile in the lit of all AC profiles, and you want to remove it from the list of roamed Wifi profiles, then you can remote this particular profile from the roaming list manually or in registry:HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Lenovo\Access Connections\Locations\%pofileName%\m_bSelectedForRoaming => change to "0" zero
Otherwise, I don't know of any otehr option, how to hide, or restrict a wifi profile for the users.
However, there might be an option how to do it.
Here is what I'm thinking of:
    - use the Access Connection ADM file and restrict the clients to connect to any profile
    - insert all Wifi profiles to the AC location list
    - use the above description, or the ADM file to block this particular profile, so that the users will not be able to connect to it
Maybe a bit workaround more then a solution, but this should lead to the situation, that you want to happen.
Let me knwo, if this is not what you are looking for.

  • Access Connections 5.20 -- Can't Specify Preferred Access Points in Location Profile

Aside from the crappy new harder-to-read graphic display of the network neighborhood -- reminiscent of Microsoft changing things to make them "cuter" while often less functional...   I have a real problem.
I am running an 802.11g wireless home network which includes both a router and a repeater.  This requires that both devices use the same SSID and encryption key.  The only way to distinguish the devices is by their MAC ID.
I want to create two Location Profiles to facilitate connection to one or the other of these two devices -- e.g., MyRouter and MyRepeater.  When setting up these two profiles, the one distringuishing feature would be that there is a different  Preferred Access Point MAC Address  set on the   Wireless Settings --  5. Advanced Configuration Settings  page.  However, this function is not enabled -- I can't enter any data on that page;  all I can do is change the  Power Save Mode  to one of the three defined options.
What is the matter here  --  how can I enter the data I want in each of these profiles.??
Also....,  if I did get to enter the data, would it work properly.??

-- Both 802.11b and g adapters on various network components

    Hi,
in this case go to Global Settings and make sure, that the option "Allow wireless connection at Windows logon (requires system restart)" is selected. This will make sure, that there will be a connectino established while you start Windows.
And of course make sure, that you have the Location switching activated.
    This should do the trick.
Let me know, if this will work for you.

  • ThinkVantage Access Connections cannot export .loc profile

    Hello,
I've tried to export one of the location profiles in Thinkvantage AC. The function however is disabled in the profile maintenance window/menu. Access connection thus only allows importing, but no exports possible.
I've already tried using the Deployment tool for creating .loa files. But as this is binary gibberish, it's not much more useful to me than a registry export.
So, does anybody alternatively have a *.loc file at hand for public viewing? Couldn't find a single example on the web. (Much less in Lenovos documentation or web site...)
    Thanks!

Here's an update to my situation:
     ThinkVantage Access Connections Issue
I just gave up on this and uninstalled it so no conflicts on this now.  (Not critical to me unless someone more knowledgeable thinks it should be!)
Rescue and Recovery: I tried reinstalling both the  Thinkvantage version 4.21 and Rapid Restore 4.0 after disabling all virus protection and uninstalling whichever one was on at that time.
Thinkvantage version 4.21:  Gave me tons of errors in the  pre windows R&R environment so I gave up after rebooting a couple of times  It told me there was a problem with factory.exe and the following files were "corrupt and unreadable":
    netdgdxb.PNF
    nettcpip.PNF
    netvt86.PNF
    netw940.PNF
    net557.PNF
    netand2.PNF
    netbrdgm.PNF
    netce2.PNF
    NetSetup.Log
Rapid Restore 4.0: Reinstalled from c:\ibmtools\apps.
Ran both "Create Rescue Media" and Rapid Restore 4.0.   "Create Rescue Media"seemed to work ok and burned a CD for me.  Rapid Restore had a problem and closed on it's own, but then proceeded to prompt me through 17 CDs for a backup!?!  Can I rely on these?  Is there a way to check their integrity?  Of course, a fix for the program seeming to end--but not really --would be great.  Also, the program to create the factory product recovery disks is no longer in Start-Programs menu.  The pre Windows R&R environment seems to load ok--no obvious error messages.
Finally,  since I reinstalled the software is the backup to factory info gone from my computer?  Is there a way to check?  What is the relationship between this and Windows System Restore which is reserving 9Gb on my HD--do I need both?
    Thanks in advance!

  • Can't import profiles in Access Connections 5.02

I exported location profiles in Access Connections 5.02. When I exported, it prompted me for a password, which I entered. However, when I tried to re-import the profiles, it did NOT prompt me for a password and failed with an error saying "Unable to import file. Incorrect passphrase or corrupted file." Well, how can I enter a passphrase when it doesn't prompt me for one on import?!!
This is on a Thinkpad T61p.

    Hi bravedave,
should your update say something meaningfull, or just a sticky note?
BTW: for the above situation, you will be prompted for the passphrase, once you open AC GUI and import this .loc file manually.
BTW2: I would more advice to use the LOA export file, as this is more extended and you can do more, then just import and export AC profies. However, for this second option you need to download the Admin pack for AC.

  • One Wireless Profile in ACCESS CONNECTIONS interferes with another?

I have a profile on my T61 laptop for my secured home wireless connection. It's worked fine (now that I've figured out all the idiosyncracies of ACCESS CONNECTIONS) up to today.
Last night, I connected to a Boingo wireless system at the airport, and saved the profile in ACCESS CONNECTIONS.
Today, when I tried to connect to my home system via my home wireless profile, I continually was told by ACCESS CONNECTIONS that the router was out of range or unavailable. I checked my profile and all settings were correct for my home wireless. All profiles are turned off for automotic location switching.
Long story short -- after other failed steps, I finally deleted the Boingo airport profile from ACCESS CONNECTIONS, and suddenly ACCESS CONNECTIONS was able to connect to my home wireless system again.
Why would one wireless profile interfere and seeming superimpose its connection settings onto my home wireless profile? I believe I now have found another idiosyncracy, it seems?
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

Here is the solution to the problem.
GoBoingo has a software program that is set to run during Startup (MSCONFIG in Windows XP); this program alerts the laptop user to the presence of a nearby BOINGO wireless hot spot. This program apparently is interfering with ACCESS CONNECTIONS in the sense that it seems to point the laptop's wireless to a BOINGO access point, regardless of whether one is nearby or not. Then, when I try to use ACCESS CONNECTIONS to connect to the home wireless profile, I'm told that the wireless router is out of range -- and, of course, it is, except that it's a BOINGO wireless router, not my home wireless router.
The solution is to remove the GoBoingo software from running in the Startup window, and instead manually start up the software if one wants to check for a nearby BOINGO wireless hot spot. After unchecking GoBoingo from Startup list, and rebooting the computer, I was able to connect to my home wireless router without any problems.

  • Location Switching and Access Connections 5.62

Under Location Switching, I enable the "Include Ethernet connections..." option.  I then see my profiles for LAN connections at the bottom of the list and I can checkmark them.  I can't however select them and change the order in the list.  Is there a reason for this?

    Hi,
in your situation, could you please make sure, that following Windows Services are started:
    - Windows Zero Configuration
    - Windows Presentation Foundation
    - Terminal Services

Also please make sure, that you are using the latest version of following apps/drivers, which are also needed for AC to work correctly:

  • Location Switching - Access Connections 5.02

Okay here's my problem, I have 4 profiles set up in Access Connections because I travel between these 4 locations daily.  For some reason, A/C will not automatically switch to the correct profile.  It will start up with the last profile I used and try to associate to an access point that is not there.  I've tried many of the options including Location Switchng.  Am I doing something wrong?  I also have an x60 that has has the same issue (running XP Pro).  Any help will be appreciated.
    Thinkpad T400 6474-R2U
    Windows 7 Ultimate x64

Yes, one of my main complaints with Access Connections is that it does not appear to recognize when a location is no longer active.    The recommendation from the help desk was to disconnect before you leave a location, but I'm usually in too much of a hurry to disconnect.    Ended up shutting off the Location Switching feature, because even when I connected manually it would disconnect and attempt to connect at the previous location.    I've never had this issue with my older ThinkPad (T42), which would automatically recognize that I switched locations and connect successfully.
