Access Privileges problem when restoring

Hi,
I accidentally deleted my entire music library this morning, but no worries, went into Time Machine to restore the files. I go back to the most recent backup that has the files (2 hours ago) and click backup. It then tells me that I do not have sufficient privileges to copy files to do the restore.
I am the only user, an admin, and have been using my backup drive with this computer for some time.
Cheers!

hi j.block!
hmmmmmmmmmmm. one other thing that might be worth a try if all else fails. i have once seen something like this turn out to be caused by a really kinky version of this issue:
iTunes: "privileges" or "permissions" issue when importing audio CD or adding music to library
... where the permissions were odd on the ipod itself ... but i've only seen that happen once. it's probably worth checking on only if nothing else seems to be working for you.

  • File access privilege problem when copying from 9.2.2 to 10.5.6

    Hello,
I have two Macs (one running MacOS 9.2.2, the other running 10.5.6) connected with an ethernet crossover cable. FileSharing over TCP/IP is enabled on both machines. When copying files from the 9.2.2 machine to the OS X one (initiated from the OS X side), after some files have been copied, I get an (OS X) error message to the effect of "insufficient file privileges for file "AppleShare PDS"", followed by a message "insufficient privileges for "Macintosh HD"" ("Macintosh HD" is the volume's name the data is copied from), after which copying terminates.
The FileSharing connection to the 9.2.2 machine is established using the only user on that machine, who has read/write rights on the entire source volume.
Both volumes have been checked with the respective OS's disk utilities and reported OK.
Any ideas how to solve this?

    Hi, chap -
You might try restarting, then immediately hold the mouse button down, keep it held down until booting has finished. That's a hardware-based command to the Mac to eject all removable media.
You can download any needed firmware update for your iMac from these Apple Kbase articles -

As eww suggests, reposting to the iMac CRT forum may be of benefit; there are sometimes model-specific peculiarities when it comes to migrating from OS 9 to OSX.

  • Access privilege problems after transferring user to computer

    Hi
I gave my flat screen iMac (lamp-shade version) to my parents when I bought a new Intel Core Duo. They had an older iMac. Both their old computer and the one I gave them are running 10.2.8. I connected the computers with a firewire, created a new user (with admin status) and transferred their user info onto my old computer. It all seemed fine, except now when I log on as them all of the applications have access privilege problems. Is there a global way for me to give them read and write access to everything?
    Thanks
Intel Core Duo   Mac OS X (10.4.4)

You may need to post this in one of the older iMac forums iMac (CRT) or iMac (Flat panel) where someone may still be running OSX which is that old. As you may realize with your new iMac and 10.4, much has changed.
Are you sure that when you sign in as the administrator and go to System Prefs/Accounts and view your access to the account that you created for them there are no access limitations?

  • Access priviliges problem when installing ICC profile

    Hi
I have a Mac Pro and recently I did a clean install of Lion. The previous OS was 10.6.8.
What I did was I formatted the hard disk where the 10.6.8. was and installed Lion. I also have three other hard disks on my Mac Pro: A mirrored RAID set of 2x750GB drives and a third 750GB drive.
When I did to install a Epson paper ICC profile today, I failed and got the answer "You do not have enough access privileges for this installation."
Furthermore on my Mackintosh HD sharing & permissions it says "You can only read." System user has read & write permissions, a mysterious "wheel" has read only permissions as have the user "everyone" No admin at all mentioned. The other two disks are identical with the exception of this mysterious "wheel" user.
I compared sharing & permissions with my MacBook Pro with 10.6.8. and which works normally. MacBook Pro´s Mackintosh read & write permissions are:
    system: read & write
    admin: read & write
    everyone: read only
I normally made me an account with password when installing the Lion to my Mac Pro. When I cehck users & gropus of the Mac Pro, I am the admin and the only visible other user is guest user.
I would very much appreciate help. This is my first real problem with Macs and I´m getting clueless.

Thanks so much for you quick reply Ralph.
Is there possibly a thread here where this procedure has been alreay explained? Could you link it to me please? I just dont know how to use the sudo command. Additionally, does the admin password you mention mean the password I made up when installing Lion or some other, superuser password?
Thanks for your time and effort.

  • Access Privileges Message When Installing Cubase Se Software

    Hello,
I recently switched to using a Mac for media purposes, namely music production.
when trying to install CUBASE SE on my Mac,it goes all the way through the install and in the last few percent,it stops, give me a "cannot create folder error" and then tells me i do not have sufficient access privileges to perform the installation.
    I AM THE ONLY USER
    I HAVE ADMINISTRATOR RIGHTS
I've installed like 10 pieces of software this week, all working fine, never had a problem before, and now this?
    Can anyone help me?!
    Its driving me insane!
    Thanks in advance.
    Simon

    Hi
I know there was an issue with the installer for Cubase SE, and that in order to use it on 10.4 I had to send the disc back to cubase in Hemel Hempstead. A new disc came back 2 days later all fine.
You can find out whether your disc is one of the old ones by checking a number printed on the disc (somewhere)
    If this doesn't work try

  • ITunes Access Privileges Problem

I've just purchased a new imac and tried to load itunes for the first time on this machine. I'm running OSX 10.6.7 and iTunes version 10.2.1
The application loads and i get to see the welcome screen, then a pop up box appears and says i dont have sufficient access privileges for this operation and the application then crashes. I've tried uninstalling itunes and downloading another version. I've tried creating another admin account and installing under a new profile. Each time the same problem.
Anyone have any ideas that might help?
    J

I've had the same problem with the sync. I've tried all sorts of changing permissions with no success. It appears to be some communication problem between iTunes and Vista. I haven't heard any fixes for this. I guess all we can do is wait for another iTunes update.
Also, when syncing, some songs will go onto the ipod others wont, anyone have this happen? Seems strange that some songs would make it onto the ipod and others wouldn't when they all have the same permissions. Thanks.

  • Privileges problem when transferring large files

This just happened, and I don't know what changed. I cannot transfer large files from my Macbook Pro to my MacPro desktop, neither on the network nor by a USB hard drive. I get the infamous "You do not have sufficient privileges" message. The files start copying, and after about 1gb or so, the message pops up. Small files no problem, there's no restriction on those. It does not matter which disk I am trying to copy it to.
I thought it was just a problem with iMovie files and folders (these get big fast), but it seems to be an issue with any large file. I have repaired permissions on both disks, I have made sure that the unlock key is unlocked and that all the boxes are checked "Read & Write".
And this problem just arose today. Nothing has changed, so far as I know.

I assume I am always logged in as administrator because I have never logged in as anything else. It also does not matter from what folder, or even disk drive, I am trying to transfer from. If the file is above a certain size, it stops transferring and I get the error.
What interests me is not that I immediately get the "insufficient privileges" error when I try and transfer a forbidden folder or file. I've seen that. This happens after about a gig of data has transferred over already, then that error pops up.

  • Frequent access privileges error when trying to duplicate an alias file

I am trying to create a set of applescripts to manage a symbolic link that points to an application's database folder. (aside: The application is not bright enough to let us select one of several databases, but a symbolic link named what the application is expecting works just fine - and was the solution suggested by the apps author.)
So I need to have a symbolic link named "app DB" in my Application Support folder. I have two symbolic links that point to the two database folders I use - one link named "app DB CD" and the other "app DB DVD" but their names don't matter. To switch which database I use with the application, I quit it, discard the "app DB" symbolic link, copy one of the other symbolic links into Application Support, change its name to "app DB" and fire up the application again. Works just fine, but I'd like to make all that an AppleScript, or at least two AppleScripts - one to swap in each database I use.
I tried to have ScriptEditor record my actions in the Finder but it did not record any of what I did except the renaming of the file. Unix's capability to copy a file and rename it at the same time would be perfect here but I don't have the Unix chops to try it yet.
I assembled a simple pair of AppleScripts that worked perfectly about a half dozen times. I was so delighted that I had gotten it to work that I just kept switching the symbolic link back & forth and launching the application for several minutes.
Sadly, like a kid playing with a toy too much it then just stopped working.
Now most of the time (but not all of the time) when the AppleScript tries to duplicate one of the symbolic links I get the following error:
    "AppleScript Error
Finder got an error: The operation could not be completed because you do not have enough access privileges."
The first time I got this I checked the privileges for the files and folders. I had "read and write" for every one. On a lark I made the Group that bore my name "read and write" instead of just "read only". The AppleScript worked again - once. Then I got the same error over and over again. I went back and added "read and write" for Others (I know - not a good thing to do) and it worked again - once.
In the past day, the AppleScripts have again worked a couple of times along with 20 or 30 failures. I have not been changing the AppleScripts or the symbolic link files during this time. Through testing, it appears to throw this error at the command "duplicate" or "move":
duplicate alias file "Application Support:DB bits:app db CD"
I have found that if I try to use as a troubleshooting tool the AppleScript:
    set foobar to (choose file)
and try to select the symbolic link file, it is not selectable - it is greyed out in the file list.
    If I try:
    set foobar to (choose folder)
I can choose the symbolic link file, but if I try to do anything with it like duplicate it, it duplicates the folder not the symbolic link file - as expected if I had thought about it.
Can anyone suggest how to reliably duplicate an alias/symbolic link file in MacOS 10.3.9? Should I instead be trying to write a Unix script and call it from AppleScript?
This is the first time in over five years that I have tried to use AppleScript, so please keep any explanations at a neophyte level. grn
    G5 2x2 Mac OS X (10.3.9)

It's difficult to pinpoint your issue without actually seeing the code you've put together. Instead I wrote a script that sets up a situation roughly similar to yours, and then debugged that. What I found is that there are a lot of ways to do this wrong, and only one way to do it right. I could get shell scripts to work half the time, but then they stopped working altogether and I couldn't figure out why. So finally I thought it'd be best to delete the alias and tell Finder to make a fresh alias in its place as necessary.
The following demo script will work as-is with no configuration or set up. I'm hoping that you can read through the code, figure out how it works, then apply the knowledge to your script. If you need help, feel free to post your code for suggestions.

  • Access Privileges problem

I am having trouble installing Adobe Flash Player 9 UB on my iMac it says I dont have enough access privileges, I am logged on as a Administrator,I have repaired permissions in disk utility and done terminal command ( sudo chmod 1775 /Volumes/"Volume Name" ) also done root command (chown -R userid /Volumes/XXXX ) all to no avail. Any help would be appreciated.
    G4 Cube 20" iMac   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

These problems come from a bug with Adobe installers.
If you have a previous version of Flash (or other Adobe apps), and you wish to upgrade it, it must be installed from the same admin account used to install the previous version. If you no longer have access to the original admin account, follow the instructions on this page:
    http://www.adobe.com/cfusion/knowledgebase/index.cfm?id=8d46f4f8
If you are seeing this problem with other non-Adobe apps, try trashing the old version of the app first before installing the new one.

  • Unusual iTunes problem when restoring iOS firmware(s).

As the topic says, I am having a very strange issue with iTunes and restoring iOS to not only my iPad, but also to my iPod Touch 2nd Gen. So far the only way I have been able to remedy the problem seems to be manually removing iTunes and all API's and/or Frameworks via Terminal; and then re-installing iTunes. For the last several months I have been using iTunes 10.1.1/2 and when I've had to restore my iPad, I have ran into the following problem:
I put my device info DFU Mode to update and here is what happens, it extracts the software as usual and proceeds to restore. It gets nearly to the end of the restore, approximately 97-98% in iTunes, just before the Verifying Restore phase. And it simply hangs there, I have let the device sit for 10+ minutes and does not move. As I said, the only way I can fix it is to completely remove iTunes and re-install. And here is where things get even stranger yet.
A day after I had previously restored, I had to restore again because the iPad AppStore would not open properly on my iPad, and also on the previous day I had uninstalled/re-installed iTunes. And the hanging problem once again occurred, I am not sure why, _*but it seems like every time I restart*_ my MacBook Pro something in iTunes becomes corrupted for some reason and the only way to resolve the issue is a(n) uninstall/reinstall of iTunes.
If anyone has anything to add to help with, it would be much appreciated. Thank you.

From iTunes: Specific update-and-restore error messages and advanced troubleshooting
    Error 20, 21, 23, 26, 28, 29, 34, 36, 37, and 40
These errors typically occur when security software interferes with the restore and update process. Use the steps to troubleshoot security software issues to resolve this issue. In rare cases, these errors may be a hardware issue. If the errors persist on another computer, the device may need service.
Also, check your hosts file to verify that it's not blocking iTunes from communicating with the update server. See the steps under the heading "Blocked by configuration (Mac OS X / Windows) > Rebuild network information > Mac OS X > The hosts file may also be blocking the iTunes Store." If you have software used to perform unauthorized modifications to the iOS device, uninstall this software prior to editing the hosts file to prevent that software from automatically modifying the hosts file again on restart.

How to restore the backup from tape now.

    Dear Ahamad,
In this command " brrestore -b xxxx.anf -m all -p /oracle/TRG/102_64/dbs/initSRC.sap " you are calling parameter file of source system initSRC.sap in which system is checking parameter/option 'compress_dir'. Please check if its same. Why you have replaced the SSID with TSID its not required at all.
    Please follow these steps....
Place xxxxx.anf file in backup directory. check for parameters in initSID.sap file of TRG system. It should be the same as of SRC system.
Try again and post result if you are getting any error.

  • Problem when restoring PSE7

I have made a backup from my old harddisk which was on c:\.
Now in my new computer I have a new harddisk that is c:\. The old c:\ is now e:\.
When I restore my backup and choses to restore my catalog on a new location on the new c:\ the problems starts.
PSE restores all the pictures on the new c:\ in the folder i have specified (c:\Pictures\).
But when the restore is done all my pictures are linked to my old harddisk which is now the e:\. So PSE have now restored all my picutres on c:\pictures but links the pictures to e:\picture where there are no pictures ofcouse.
So even when PSE restores the pictures right on the new c:\ is does not link them to the new location on my c:\
I have also tried to restore the catalog using the option Original Location and PSE restores the pictures to e:\ even so that the original location was on c:\ before my new computer.
Is there any way to fix this ? Can I get PSE to move all the pictures to c:\pictures some how ?

A bug in PSE created an inconsistency in the volume table (drive table) for the C: drive. It has the correct drive letter (C) but the incorrect volume-serial number (the serial number of what is now the E: drive).
As an aside, its quite annoying that in PSE 6, Adobe changed from using drive letters to serial numbers as an attempt to work around the problems caused by Windows when it sometimes changes drive letters automatically. But Adobe has introduced so many bugs as a result that I think theyve made the situation worse, and they didnt bother fixing any of these in PSE 7.
To fix this, you change the volume serial number of the E: drive. Once you do that, PSE should use the drive letter C: to refer to all the photos in your catalog.
    To change the number:
    1. Download the volumeid utility from Microsoft and place it in a convenient folder:
    http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/bb897436.aspx
    2. Exit all programs.
    3. In the Windows Start menu, find the item for Command Prompt (usually under Accessories), right click it, and select Run As Administrator.
    4. In the command prompt, cd
    folder-from-step-1
    5. In the command prompt, volumeid e: 5879-4F82 (Ive chosen an arbitrary volume id thats one larger than the current one).
    6. Reboot.
    7. In the command prompt, vol e:, to verify it has the new volume id.
    8. Rerun psedbtool to verify that the first volume is using the drive letter C: rather than E:.

  • User accounts, directory structures and selective access privileges

Bought a new MacBook Pro back in April and only now am I getting down to using it. I was thinking of creating the following user accounts in the hope of creating a scheme that allows selective access to certain folders:
    Root -a super user account
Admin - I don’t think I should be logged in as the administrator all the time
Jai Gill - my main account with all my work files including client information that is organised in a Workflow folder containing a Projects folder and a Clients folder (within which, each of my clients has a folder)
Show Time - a secure Simple Finder type account for when I am running a client specific presentation or workshop to ensure all data for other clients is kept secure and away from prying eyes.
When using the Show Time account, I would like to set it up so that only those files relating to the client in question are available for use. For instance, if I am running a workshop for Client G, I only want the folder for Client G available for use in this account and not any other clients. A few hours or days later, this could change to Client B or F or J etc so I need a way to easily secure the current client’s data and switch over to the other client’s data i.e., put away work and pull up new work.
Would it be possible to create a scheme using aliases placed in Show Time’s Documents folder pointing at a client folder in my documents folder to allow this to happen? Would I have to create a group with the right access privileges to enable this to happen? Or is there an alternative method based on using the Shared files folder and some sort of script or application to create a duplicate of a client folder and use a scheme to synchronise it with the original client folder?
Is this possible in Mac OSX? Any thoughts? Ideas? Applications/utilities that already enable this to happen?
MacBook Pro   Mac OS X (10.4.9)

    Hi Kiraly
I cracked it today. Took a couple of hours to figure out some idiosyncrasy but I'm now set.
    Here's what I did:
    1. Got a copies of Sharepoint, Workgroup Manager and ChronoSync.
    2. Logged into the MacBook Pro as myself, went into System Preferences and used the normal approach to set up an account for a user called Show Time
    3. Using Workgroup Manager, created an addition workgroup called macshow
    4. Made myself and Show Time members of macshow
    5. Attached the MBP to my G5 using my 2gen iPod's FireWire cable and cranked it up in target disk mode
    6. Using ChronoSync, did a 'bi-directional' synchronisation of my Workflow folder into a location in the MBP's Shared folder (going to do this all the time)
    7. Shut down, detached then restarted the MBP and logged on as myself.
    8. Located the Workflow folder in the Shared folder and by getting information, set that folder and all it's contents to be owned by me but accessible and R/W for the group macshow
    9. Went two levels into the Workflow folder [Workflow/4 Delivery/Client T] and using SharePoint, made the folder Client T accessible to the group macshow.
    10. Logged in as Show Time and accessed the Shared folder to find that my scheme had worked and I had access to the folder for Client T and all it's contents.
    11. Logged out and went back in under my ID and now using System Preferences, crippled the Show Time account down to Simple Finder with access limited to just a handful of applications like KeyNote, Word, Excel, Powerpoint and Safari.
    12. Went back in as Show Time and it went into Simple Finder and thereafter, everything works great. Workflow showed up as did the folder for Client T plus all its contents. Opened a few documents and presentations and they wrked great.
    New learning points for me:
    1. I had to log out then log back in to make the access privileges stick when using the Show Time accounts
    2. A number of locked Excel files prevented access privileges being set - had to locate and unlock each
    3. Using both SharePoint and Workgroup Manager may be seem to be overkill but it works as these two applications helped in getting the groups sorted out as well as access to a specific folder.
The best part of the above scheme is that I can at anytime, using SharePoint, change the client folder being shared with the user Show Time through the use of the group macshow i.e., change Client T back to my group and then pick say Client J or any number of other client folders and assign them to the group macshow.
Thanks to you and the others who have posted on this and all other threads on this topic, I have sorted this out in one go.
    Jai
PS in case you're wondering why it took me so long to get down to do it, it is something called client work. And may there be more of it too!
