Access/SQL connection being lost

Hello,
Here is the situation: Windows Server 2012 Standard Edition, SQLServer 2012 Standard edition, MSAccess 2013 using ODBC 11. Sometime Access users get a message that they do not have permission to access SQLServer or that is doesn't exist. I checked the SQLServer
logs and could not find any errors. But, on the Windows NT Security Log, I found a lot of messages (all at the same time) that say An account was successfully logged on, then immediately: An account was logged off (with the user's login name). There were about
50 of these messages in the space of a few minutes.
The only way that user could restore their connection to SQLServer was to reboot their machine.
I do notice a lot of logon - logoff messages for some of the users. Is this typical?
I believe we have enough client access licenses to Server 2012. I may need to check this. One problem may be that we have only 10 CALs to SQL Server, but we have 11 machines connecting through Access to SQL Server. I didn't think this would be a problem
because we only have 7 employees and they are normally only at one desk/logon.
Any help greatly appreciated!
Thank you,
Albert

SQLOLEDB is not an ODBC driver, it is an OLE DB provider. But since OLE DB has been deprecated for connection to SQL Server, maybe you should use ODBC instead. And, yes, it would be better to use SQL Server Native client:
Public Const CONNECTSTRING = "Driver={SQL Server Native Client 11.0};User ID=myID; pwd=myPassword; Data Source=192.168.1.141; Initial Catalog=myDatabase; Integrated Security=SSPI;"
You may have to change other parts of the connection string, as ODBC and OLE DB do not have exactly same keywords for the connection strings.
However, the cause for your lost connections are likely to be elsewhere. The error message means that you were not able to read SQL Server at all. You mentioned entries about log in and out in the Windows event log. Were these messages from SQL Server or
where were this account logging in and out from?

    I can't beleive my luck! I was taking the online exam: Introduction To Oracle9i yesterday (Friday, Feb. 6th 4:30PM EST) when my internet connection was lost! My ISP figured that doing a server upgrade at 4:30PM on a Friday was an ok time! Now I am probably going to get screwed for the $90USD I paid and fail the exam. I was at question# 43 of 57 when this happened. Also I will have to wait 30 days to re-test on top of it since that is the protocol! Anyways so I call Oracle Online Education support and the test I took is not even managed by Oracle...it's a Prometric company...even though Oracle logos were plastered all over the web pages while doing the test? So now they are not even open till Monday and I just know they are going to say "there is nothing we can do" and my ISP is probably going to say the same thing! I am hoping I can be able to re-test without charge even though it is my ISP's fault.

    Well after explaining my situation in full detail to the Oracle Testing Staff in an email I received a cut and paste reply rite off one of the webpages which has nothing to do with what I was explaining in my email. I am really surprised that this is the way the Oracle responds to people whom are learning and promoting their products!
    Dear Rick,
    You need to have certain internet connection requirements in order to take the online test. These are described in http://www.oracle.com/education/certification/index.html?onlinetest.html
    You can take the exam from anywhere with an internet connection with the below requirements. If you do not have access to an internet connection with these requirements, you may take the exam at an Oracle University Training Center or Authorized Prometric Testing Center.

    Do you have any other browsers on your iPad? If you don't have one, why don't you try downloading one of these free browsers - they will all be "lite" versions (not full featured)  - but if you can access these websites with one of those - then I assume that we can point to Safari as being the culprit. That will not solve the Safari problem, but it will give us another point from which to work.

  • Access SQL Query - INSERT Help!

    Hi,
    I'm trying to do a simple INSERT statement in an Access Database.
    My code is:
    public SQLConnect() {
              // SQL Connection Part
              try {
                   Class.forName("sun.jdbc.odbc.JdbcOdbcDriver"); //have tried with .newInstance() as well but same effect
                   String filename = "C://Maxi//maxi.mdb";
                   String database = "jdbc:odbc:Driver={Microsoft Access Driver (*.mdb)};DBQ=";
                   database += filename.trim() + ";DriverID=22;READONLY=true}";
                   Connection con = DriverManager.getConnection(database, "", "");
                   PreparedStatement ps = con.prepareStatement("INSERT INTO Student (ID,FamilyName,FirstName,OtherName,Email,Phone,DOB,CourseType,Sex) VALUES (?, ?, ?, ?, ?, ?, ?, ?, ?)");
                   ps.setString(1, "071111114");
                   ps.setString(2, "Crane");
                   ps.setString(3, "Frasier");
                   ps.setString(4, "Winslow");
                   ps.setString(5, "[email protected]");
                   ps.setString(6, "012345");
                   ps.setString(7, "01/01/2008");
                   ps.setString(8, "M");
                   ps.setString(9, "M");
                   ps.executeUpdate();
                   //Statement t = con.createStatement();
                   //t.execute("SELECT * FROM STUDENT");
                   //con.close();
              } catch (Exception e) {
                   System.out.println("ERROR!");
                   e.printStackTrace();
         }I am experiencing weird behaviour with the INSERT command being carried out successfully.
    The code as above will not INSERT the data in the PreparedStatement.
    However if I use any of the two methods in the commented out code, the INSERT will be carried out. Why is this happening? Surely it should just INSERT the data with the line ps.executeUpdate() without having to wait for any further commands.
    The reason I don't want to close the connection is that I am attempting to make a class so I can do simple INSERT, UPDATE and SELECT queries without having to go through the initial connection steps each time. I have read that opening and closing a connection for each query takes a lot of overhead, but it seems to be the only way this will properly execute.
    I am welcome to any suggestions.
    Cheers.

    Ha it always seems to fix itself as soon as you post about it.
    It would look as if when creating the connection if you do:
    con.setAutoCommit(false);and then after the ps.executeUpdate(); if you commit with:
    con.commit();this actually works.
    If you omit to set the AutoCommit then this does not work. I am still stumped as to why I have to do this. Any explanations?

  • How to access Sql Server Express installed on Virtual PC from Host?

    I have SQL Server Express 2008 R2 installed on Virtual PC. and on my Host machine i have SQL Server 2008 R2 ( Enterprise Version) installed.
    Since Management studio that comes with SQL express does not support SQL profiler, i want to access SQL Server Express from the Host machine’s management studio which has SQL profiler.
    But I could access it using VM’s ip address & instance name

    Hi lax,
    Follow below steps in your Virtual Machine:
    1. Allow remote connections to this server
    The first thing you want to check is if Remote Connections are enabled on your SQL Server database. In SQL Server 2008 you do this by opening SQL Server 2008 Management Studio, connect to the server in question, right click the server and open the Server Properties.
    Navigate to Connections and ensure that Allow remote connections to this server is checked.
    2.  Protocols for MSSQLServer
    The next good thing to check is the SQL Server Network Configuration. Open the SQL Server Configuration Manager, unfold the node SQL Server Network Configuration and select Protocols for MSSQLServer (or whatever the name of your SQL Server instance is). Make
    sure that TCP/IP is enabled.
    3. The Firewall
    If there is still no communication happening between your computer and the remote SQL Server you most likely need to configure your firewall settings.
    A good first step is to figure out which port is being used by TCP/IP (and which you need to open in your firewall). You can do this by right clicking TCP/IP and selecting Properties. Click on the tab IP Addresses .
    That was easy enough and all there is left to do is to allow inbound TCP/IP traffic on Port 1433 in your firewall. In Windows 7 this works something like this. Open the Control Panel and navigate to Windows Firewall. Click on Advanced Settings on the left hand
    side and you should see the Windows Firewall with Advanced Security. Select the Inboud Rules on the left hand side and click on New Rule on the right hand side. This opens the New Inbound Rule Wizard which you can use to allow inbound traffic on Port 1433
    for TCP/IP.
    For more information, please refer to
    http://blogs.msdn.com/b/walzenbach/archive/2010/04/14/how-to-enable-remote-connections-in-sql-server-2008.aspx.
    In host machine:
    After you have done steps above, you could use the SQL Server Management Studio in the host machine to connect the SQL Server Express R2 in Virtual PC. If you installed a default instance in Virtual PC, you could use VirtualComputerName to login the SQL
    Server database engine. If you installed a named instance in Virtual PC, you could use VirtualComputerName\InstanceName to login the SQL Server database engine.
    Thanks,
    Maggie

  • SQL Connections remain open after Crystal Report closes

    I am wirting an interface to use the crystal report viewer to print reports, connecting to a Progress Open Edge 10.1B database.  From our application we declare the application, report, exportoptions and connectionproperties objects and pass these to the crystal reports viewer.  Once the report is printed we release the objects and set their variables for null.  However we are finding that the SQL connection to the database is remaining connected and we can only release the connection by manually going in a disconnecting.
    I have read in forums that people use .dispose or .close to release the connection, however we do not have access to these methods as we do not use .NET.  Are there any methods we can use to disconnect these sql connections?

    Hi Dean,
    Moved to the Legacy Application forums. Likely using the RDC as your report engine.
    You should still be able to close and dispose of the report objects. They are not specific to .NET.
    In VB it would look something like these lines::
        crReport.Close
        Set CrystalActiveXReportViewer1.ReportSource = Nothing
        Set crReport = Nothing
    Once the report is closed it should disconnect from the DB. If you close the application does that disconnect?
    Have you looked on 4GL's site for info on how to?
    Thank you
    Don

    There are some other solutions possible.
    1. Get another driver. The only one known is java only so it wont crash. But is not not free.
    2. Use a proxy driver. That means that another app actually does the database work. If it crashes you just start it again (which you can do in your main code.) That way it won't take down your server. There are commercial jdbc drivers that claim MS Access but are are really just proxy implementations as an option in this area.

  • THE DATABASE CONNECTION IS LOST :;; WIERD  ORA-01012 NOT LOGGED ON ERROR

    ERROR: ORA-01012 NOT LOGGED ON ERROR
    I AM USING A JAVA SWING INTERFACE (JDK 1.1.8), WHICH USES JNI TO CALL C PROGRAMS WHICH IN TURN CONNECTS TO THE DATABASE, ORACLE 8.1.6.
    A DATABASE CONNECTION IS ESTABLISED IN THE MAIN CLASS BY CALLING A FUNCTION FROM THE CONSTRUCTOR.
    FOR ALL OTHER FUNCTION CALLS WHICH ARE MADE FROM WITHIN THIS CONSTRUCTOR, THE CONNECTION STAYS.
    BUT AFTER THE CONTRUCTOR CALL IS COMPLETE, DATABASE CONNECTION IS STRANGELY LOST. THUS ALL OTHER FUNCTION CALLS FAIL BECAUSE OF CONNECTION ISSUES GIVING ORA-01012. THOUGH IF I CHECK UP IN THE DATABASE, THE CONNECTION DOES FIND AN ENTRY.
    SO IT APPEARS THAT SOMEHOW THE JAVA INTERFACE LOOSES TRACK OF CONNECTION. BUT STRANGELY ALL THE FUNCTIONS WORK IF CALLED FROM THE CONSTRUCTOR......... BUT THATS NOT THE IDEA.
    PLEASE HELP, THIS PROBLEM IS BUGGING ME FOR WEEKS NOW.
    THANKS
    AMIT

    apologise for the caps lock.
    i am working on a previous system with java swing front end which alread uses jni, and connects to database using pro *c.
    My problem is that the connection is lost as soon as the constructor of the main class is run, giving an
    ORA-1012 NOT LOGGED ON ERROR.
    But if i place the same calls in the contructor all the database call work.
    It somehow appears that the java interface looses the connection context. Though the session does find entry in the oracle dynamic tables as long as i dont close the front end main window, thereby meaning that its the jave interface which looses the context.
    part of the code of the main class eiquser.
    //constructor
    public EiqUser() {
         super();
         initMRI();
    private void initMRI() {
         try {
              /* initialize geoManager environment */
              int rccc = new EiqCfuncs().eiqInitEnv();
    //eiqinitenv is a c function which connects to database using pro *C
              EiqCfuncs cfuncs = new EiqCfuncs();
              //EiqCfuncs has the prototypes of c functions used bye the java interface
              this.ivjFileMenu.setText(cfuncs.eiqGetText(resNum.getTEXT_FILE_MENU())); // sets the menu name
    and so on.........
    public void eiqUser_WindowClosed(java.awt.event.WindowEvent windowEvent) {
         new EiqCfuncs().eiqTermEnv(); // gives ora-1012 error
    //eiqtermenv is supposed to disconnect from data base, but returns an ora-1012 not logged on erro
         return;
    //eiqtermenv closes the connection with the data base. But fails in this case. if i place the same call ( eiqtermenv) in the initMRI function or the contructor it succeeds.
    Plus if i dont use the java interace and use a c stub for executing the same sequence of functions, then i dont face any problems.
    the proc calls exectuted ultimately by...
    :::eiqinitenv
    exec sql connect using :sqlid identified by sqlpw; // succeeds giving sqlerr.sqlcode=0;
    ::::eiqterm env
    exec sql commit work; //fails giving 0ra-1012 error
    exec sql rollback work;
    Why is the java interface loosing track of the connection once done with the constructor of the main class?? The session still finds an entry in the oracle dynamic tables.
    Please help
    Thx
    Amit

  • Unable to load the necessary SQL connectivity library

    I am installing an older (non-Microsoft) program (32bit) that manages mail online and it requires an access to SQL Server to create database to complete installation. I am installing it on Windows Server 2003 standard. This program
    I am installing recommends SQL Server 2000. We are now running SQL Server 2005 on a separate server. For connectivity, I installed SQL server 2005 tools (full install) on the same 2003 server as the program so that this program could manage to locate
    SQL server 2005 and connect to it in order to create necessary tables and complete the installation. I already manually created the database for this program on SQL Server 2005. I created ODBC SQL Server connection string (User DSN). However, during
    installation, I am getting the following error message:
    ERROR: Setup is unable to load the necessary SQL connectivity library. This indicates that the proper client-side SQL utilities are not installed on your system. Setup cannot continue.
    Could this error be SQL Server version specific and the program only likes SQL 2000 client tools and not 2005? Are there major differences between libraries versions? Should there be something else configured? What am I missing? Thanks in advance.

    ERROR: Setup is unable to load the necessary SQL connectivity library. This indicates that the proper client-side SQL utilities are not installed on your system. Setup cannot continue.

    Tools are tools, not a connectivity library and by the error message the right connectivity library is missing. Ask the software vendor which one is required or look it up on the other machine, where the application works.
