Access to iPod content?

OK... I think this falls into the category of "nice idea but not supported now":
I'd like to be able to access content on an iPod via my Apple TV.
While most/all of the content on MY iPod(s) are also in an iTunes library -- and therefore accesible from aTV, what about when a friend comes over to my house with his/her iPod? I'd like to be able to connect that iPod to my Mac (or HEY, even better yet, a iPod dock connected to the USB port on the back the aTV!!!) and see that content as a "source" on the aTV.
Am I missing something that would allow this now?... or am I waiting for r2+?
MacBook Pro   Mac OS X (10.4.9)

Actually, you can play the content from your iPod in iTunes. I do it all the time.
At home, my iPod is synced with my desktop Mini. But on my MacBook at work, I don't need a copy of all those songs crowding my hard drive. If you hook up the iPod to a second machine -- the one it's not synced to -- all you have to do is click "Manually Manage Music and Videos" and it will allow you to play back that iPod's content through iTunes.
Works fine, and all you have to do is un-check that selection when you connect it to the original source syncing machine (the preference for that checkbox lives on the iPod, not on each machine).

  • How can I export my iPod contents to another library?

My iPod's contents were all exported from my desktop iTunes library. Now I want to download that music to an empty library on my laptop.
I have connected the Pod to the laptop and looked for ways to do this, but I get a screen asking if I want to replace the iPod's contents with those of the new (empty) library, and of course, I do not want to do that because such action would erase all of my iPod's contents. (Wouldn't it?)
    IBM Thinkpad laptop   Windows XP

When you connect your iPod and get the message that your it is linked to a different library and asking if you want to link to this one and replace all your songs etc, press *No*. Pressing "Yes" will irretrievably remove all songs from your iPod. Your iPod should appear in the iTunes source list from where you can change the update setting to manual. If you are using the iPod in manual update mode it is safe from being accidentally erased when you connect to an empty iTunes: Using iPod with Multiple computers
You can also use a keyboard command to prevent your iPod auto-syncing with iTunes. While connecting the iPod to the computer on Windows hold down the Shift + Ctrl keys (on a Mac hold down the Option and Command (⌥ and ⌘) keys). This will stop the iPod from auto-syncing with iTunes and the iPod will appear in the source list. Wait until you are sure the iPod has mounted, and that it will not auto sync and then you can let the keys go. This may take between 20 to 30 seconds depending on your computer. Then go to Preferences>iPod and check the "Manually manage songs and playlists" box: Managing Your Songs Manually
You can't sync or drag your music back directly from an iPod to iTunes, the transfer of music is designed by default to be one way from iTunes to iPod. However there is a manual method of accessing the iPod's hard drive and copying songs but not playlists back to iTunes on Windows posted in this thread: MacMuse - iPod to iTunes
If you prefer something more automated then there are a number of third party utilities that you can use to retrieve the music files and playlists from your iPod, this is just a selection. Have a look at the web pages and documentation for these, they are generally quite straightforward.

  • I cant access my ipod from itunes

ok, ive looked all over itunes to fix this problem. i just bought an ipod video and i just finished downloading my music from my itunes, the only problem is that i cant access my ipod!! there is a icon that looks like a lock near the free space end of my ipod
THIS IS WHAT IT LOOKS LIKE
Used: 7.79 GB [ ] Free: 20.03 GB (and heres the icon)
so... i can put music onto my ipod, i just cant take it off... or change it...

Grey text when you look at the content and lock symbol at the bottom of the screen simply shows that your iPod is set to "automatically update songs and playlists". . If you want to access your iPod directly, play it through your iTunes, connect it to a second computer etc. you just need to change the update method to "Manually manage songs and Playlists" in the iPod preferences. For more detail see this tutorial: Managing Your Songs Manually
One thing to be aware of with manually updating is that the iPod also has to be manually ejected before the "Do Not Disconnect" message will go away. Safely disconnect iPod

The iPod offers three ways to transfer music from your computer. You can select one of the following update modes from the iPod Preferences menu in iTunes (Edit=>Preferences=>'iPod' tab):
    1) Automatically update all songs and playlists. This is the default mode, in which your entire music library, including playlists, is automatically synced to your iPod. If the music library on your computer exceeds the iPod storage capacity, you are prompted to select a different update method.
    2) Automatically update selected playlists only. With this option, iTunes automatically copies the playlists you have selected to the iPod when you connect it to the computer.
    3) Manually manage songs and playlists. You can also choose to transfer music to the iPod manually. This allows you to drag and drop individual songs and playlists from iTunes to the iPod.

  • Can I put iPod contents on another computer?

Hi, I have (well, had) a laptop that I synced with my iPod, but now its dead. With it goes my music, purchases, and everything. Unless I can change computers, of course. I have a desktop that I'd like to put my iPod contents on, but I can't mix libraries, so I would end up deleting everything on my iPod (iTunes library is empty). How can I do this?

iTunes will only give you the option to copy your iTunes Store purchases directly from an iPod to the computer, you'll find details in this article: Copying iTunes Store purchases from your iPod or iPhone to a computer
For everything else (music from CDs, other downloads etc) there are a number of third party utilities that you can use to retrieve the music files and playlists from your iPod. • Ipod content is grayed out and I cannot select as source or play on mini

Hi - this just happened and I need to know how to fix. I cannot seem to play any of the music on my ipod mini. I see the songs but the ipod skips right over them. The exception is one song that I downloaded for free. When I log into itunes, I see the ipod and the songs, but they are all grayed out and I cannot select any of them or play from my ipod source. This just happened this week and I wonder if I have somehow removed thelink to the purchased music? I connect the ipod to my other computer and it erased my content (I am new at this) so I reconnected to the orginal and restored my playlist, but nothing will play now. All itunes and ipod are up to date. Can any one help?

Grey text when you look at the content and lock symbol at the bottom of the screen simply shows that your iPod is set to "automatically update songs and playlists". When you connected your iPod to the second computer you will have been presented with a dialogue box saying you were linked to another computer and asking if you wanted to link to this one. I would guess that you clicked "Yes" instead of "No" which is why your iPod was erased. If you want to access your iPod directly, play it through your iTunes, connect it to a second computer etc. you just need to change the update method to "Manually manage songs and Playlists" in the iPod preferences. Also, If you usually change your iPod Options by selecting 'View iPod' from the 'Edit' menu in Windows, you may on occasion find it is also greyed out, however if you right click the iPod icon in iTunes you can select 'iPod Options' and change to manual update from there.

    Hi,
I had to format my computer and lost all data. I thought I would just sync my Ipod from Ipod to computer and be done with it.
Well, it didn't work. For some reason I can't seem to get the songs from my iPod in my iTunes library.
Another thought was to just pull the songs from the Ipod onto my computer and then from there into my Itunes library, but I only see 4 folders (foto's, notes, etc) i can't see the MP3's Any reason why.
Hope anyone can help me with this.

  • I have a 120gb Classic that has no space left on it. i am going to buy a larger gb capacity ipod as soon as i get clearer instruction on how to get the old ipod content to the new ipod. How do you get content from one ipod to the other?

how do you get content from one ipod to the new one? my content is on an external hard drive not on my pc and i have run out of space on my 120gb classic. can you get old ipod content to new? my itunes has only got short cuts, the real content is on an external drive? can this be done?? please help

If the content is on an external drive, but your library knows where to find it, then it should all work. Connect your device, make some selections for what to put on it, and sync. If, on the other hand, your current iPod is the only place holding some of your media then see this user tip: Recover your iTunes library from your iPod or iOS device.

If you previously synced to the computer then you may be able to recover use of the iPod without erasing the iPod by following the instructions here:
    Disabled Recovery-must use syncing computer.
Otherwise y will have to restore and thus erase the iPod
    You can restore from backup
    If not in backup then:

You can redownload most iTunes purchases by:
Downloading past purchases from the App Store, iBookstore, and iTunes Store
If problem what happens or does not happen and when in the instructions? When you successfully get the iPod in recovery mode and connect to computer iTunes should say it found an iPod in recovery mode.
