Acpi-cpufreq, pm-suspend, CPU1 set to high performance mode

Basically, the background of the problem is that ACPI is unable to set my second core, CPU1, to the proper frequency. it gets some sort of AE_NOT_FOUND error or something in a psyloop. subsequently, the cpu0 is set by cpufreq while the second CPU, since it is not controlled by kernel at all, ends up overriding the CPU0 settings and setting the entire thing to High Performance mode. the acpi-cpufreq module then crashes and is unable to set any rules, so it defaults to 2.2 ghz and performance mode.
I found that the only way to undo this after a resume from pm-suspend without restarting altogether is to first unload the acpi-cpufreq module (force option must be used otehrwise a "currently in use" error occurs), then reload it, then restart cpufreq daemon to make it restore the settings i have.
$> sudo rmmod -f acpi-cpufreq
$> sudo modprobe acpi-cpufreq
$> sudo /etc/rc.d/cpufreq restart
my question is, is there any way to REload the module and restart the daemon after resuming? i know that you can set acpi-cpufreq to unload on suspend, but that doesnt work because of the acpi-cpufreq module being used by another program, and i do not know how to make it forcibly unload. nor am i sure if unloading it would require me to restart the daemon still or not.

  • K8N Neo - High Performance Mode Killed System?

I'm slightly frazzled at the moment, so forgive me for any mistakes. I installed the K8N Neo Platinum on Tuesday night, with a brand new Athlon64 3200+ with 1mb L2.
Video Card: VisionTek Xtasy Geforce4 Ti4400
    Memory: 2x Kingston 512MB 400MHz DDR PC3200
    Power Supply: Antec True550
    +3.3V @ 32A
    +5V @ 40A
    +12V @ 24A
I installed the various MSI applications tonight, including CoreCenter. Attempted to adjust the FSB with it, but with just a 2.5% increase, the temperature of the CPU was getting higher than I cared to see during stressful applications. So I set it back to default, and later on read up on the BIOS settings in the manual... I read the description of "High Performance Mode", and figured I would try setting it to Optimized.
Seemed like a good idea, let the board I had read was great for overclocking do it's stuff automatically. So after I set it to optimized (Didn't change anything else), I hit F10 and let it reboot. It never did. When it rebooted, the power stayed on, Hard Drive light showed it was being accessed... Only problem was absolutely no video was being sent. Monitor was as black as black could be.
Turned the power off, tried again and again. Same deal. Power comes on, HD shows it is being accessed constantly for about 20 seconds, then just stops. But no video is being output, which leads me to think the system is just dead in the water for the most part.
During this state, the LED's on the back are as follows: Top two are red, bottom two are green. I saw in another thread someone was going on about there being an explanation for them, but I don't have it in my manual nor could I find an explanation of them.
At this point I'm just shaking my head, because there is absolutely nothing to be done as far as I can tell. If anyone has any ideas as to a possible solution or at the very least, whether the MB just went nuts or something worse happened, I'd greatly appreciate it. I'm at a loss and afraid to even think what might be the problem.

While the "high performance settings" can surely make the pc unstable, it should hardly ccause hardware-damage.
Turn the computer off (to be safe, remove the power-cord)
Clear cmos with the jumper (instructions can be found in your manual)
    Wait 30 seconds
Put the jumper back to its original position.
Power on the system, and see if it works ?
    EDIT: Info from manual:
    Quote
    Clear CMOS Jumper: JBAT1
There is a CMOS RAM on board that has a power supply from external battery
to keep the system configuration data. With the CMOS RAM, the system can automatically
boot OS every time it is turned on. If you want to clear the system configuration,
use the JBAT1 (Clear CMOS Jumper ) to clear data. Follow the instructions below to
    clear the data:
    MSI Reminds You...
You can clear CMOS by shorting 2-3 pin while the system is off.
Then return to 1-2 pin position. Avoid clearing the CMOS while the
system is on; it will damage the mainboard.

  • Excessive Fan Activity - High Performance Mode

    I have a macbook pro 15" 2009 model
It works brilliantly, no complaints I love it.. in battery saving mode!
When its in high performance mode the fan goes nuts!?
I've checked activity monitor etc and nothing is using all the power, theres no reason why the fan should be working harder than it does in battery saving mode.
I always have open.. Adobe Fireworks, Chrome and Finder.. Thats pretty much it. And in battery saving mode everything works great, the fan is quiet. Why when I select high performance for a bit extra speed maybe does the fan speed increase tenfold? Dosnt make sense!
    Anybody come across this?
    Thanks

Reset the SMC, as per > Resetting the System Management Controller
    1. Shut down the computer.
    2. Unplug the computer's power cord.
    3. Wait fifteen seconds.
    4. Attach the computer's power cord.
    5. Wait five seconds, then press the power button to turn on the computer.

  • Grey boxes even though set to high performance display

Hi. I am wondering if there is an incompatability issue. Until today, I have been using CS2 with no problems, on Windows XP. I have now installed CS6 on a laptop with Windows 7 operating system and opened my files. Three problems really...
    1) about 95% of my many images (all exported images from my Sibelius 4 programme) are displaying in grey boxes even though I set 'View', 'DIsplay performance' to 'high'
(don't understand why as all my tiff drawings done in Photoshop are showing fine).
    next problem...
2). A box comes up when I try to open each document saying...
The documents embedded colour profile does not match the current cmyk working space.
…policy is to discard profiles that do not match
    Embedded: Europe iso coated FOGRA27
    Working: U.S web coated (swop)
Is this anything to worry about? I have been very careful about my colour choices and want nothing going wrong!
    Next problem...
    3)  So annoying, that even though all the links appear fine (i.e.to begin with there were only a few '!' warning in the links folder, but now since i've 'relinked' those, crazily enough to the same file name, there are none), I keep getting a warning box popping up saying:  'Error encountered while reading Tiff image. Image may be damaged or incompatible. Resave the image with different settings and try again' . I keep getting the message box randomly sometimes every few seconds so it's impossible to get work done, not that I can anyway since the vast majority of my work is now in grey boxes and can't be deciphered, as already explained, as if something is wrong with the performance display.
Regarding the display performance, could it be a problem that my machine isn't up to it? I.e. The processing speed. It's quite new though, Dell , Inspiron, 5720.i know nothing about this.
    Stuck. Please help!!! Many thanks,
    Zylo
P.S> Also worth adding that the 'edit link' feature for my SIbelius  images is not working (but is for the Tiff drawings - i.e. I right click, edit link, then it takes me to the original file to edit). Hope this all makes sense!

I would like to inform Adobe staff that it IS most definitely a problem/bug in the CS6 software. It has caused me immense frustration and worry especially as over ten years work was at stake! (a series of books I have written, all using Adobe Indesign CS2 in conjunction with Sibelius 4, importing more than a thousand EPS files!). I find it very disappointing that Adobe have not fixed this problem in CS6 and the new CC2014, despite the fact the bug was reported at least twice previously by people using CS5, both of them using EPS files from Sibelius.
Whilst writing this thread, I have also been corresponding with a very helpful person on the Sibelius help forum. They discovered the problem was not with the EPS files at all: the problem was with the InDesign .indd files themselves, and a bug in InDesign.
Whenever an old version of an .indd file is read into a later version of InDesign, the file format is updated to the latest version. But, if the .indd file contains placed graphics originating from Sibelius (maybe only versions up to 6), the update process results in corruption of the .indd file, which becomes unusable and might even crash InDesign.
The work-around is to export the corrupted .indd file into .idml format, and then re-import the .idml file. (This operation strips out all the TIFF previews of placed graphics, which is where the problems reside). The re-imported file is then happy to re-link to all the EPS graphics from Sibelius, and the InDesign project is recovered.
Here are previous reports of this InDesign bug:
    https://forums.adobe.com/thread/966318
    https://forums.adobe.com/thread/1146504
    https://forums.adobe.com/thread/1188433
    An explanation of the work-around:
    http://www.creativeprogression.com/idx-idml-troubleshooting/
In summary; the way around this bug is as follows…
    - on the new PC, open a troublesome InDesign file into Indesign CS6, and
    ignore all the errors;
    - In InDesign, choose File -> Export;
    - In the drop-down at the bottom of the Export dialogue, choose "InDesign
    Markup (IDML)", in the File name box choose a helpful name, and click Save;
    - In InDesign, File -> Close the bad document;
    - In Indesign, File -> Open the .idml document you just created two steps
    above;
    - the document will open with all graphics replaced with grey boxes, but
    hopefully no error messages;
    - you can then re-link all the placed EPS graphics, hopefully in one fell
    swoop for the whole file;
    - now save the document as an InDesign .indd file: but take care not to
overwrite any of your older InDesign files: you might need them again one
    day.
This procedure works because the .IDML export strips out the TIFF previews
of the graphics which are normally embedded in the .INDD file, and it is
those TIFF previews from CS2 which are causing the problem.  Re-linking the
EPS files generates new TIFF previews in CS6.
MEANWHILE, Adobe software people, PLEASE fix this long overdue bug!
Hope this thread is helpful for any others who have also experience the same problem.

  • Poor wireless reception when energy saver set to higher performance

When I set my laptop to "higher performance", I get terrible wifi reception. My internet connection slows to a crawl. If I switch to better battery life, the problem is resolved. I have snow leopard 10.6.8.

You're completely right about the graphic cards.
Yes, I've tried unplugging and plugging the cables (mini display port + usb) serveral times. This triggers the normal blue-ish screen for around a second and then goes back to using only the MBP screen.

    Hi guys!
My 2009 Macbook pro 17 turns off and goes dead when switching to "high performance" graphics in the energy saver controll panel.
This happens also when the battery is 100% charged. i must reconnect powersupply to reboot.
The battery is new, from june this year.

It will not do any harm trying it but you are probably correct in these circumstances.

  • State of Transaction in High Safety mode (Synchronous mode)

    Hello Team,
I have configured Database Mirroring with High Safety mode ( Synchronous Mode). I have started a long transaction (transaction A) which is expected to complete in 10 minutes. However, principal server shuts down due to hardware issue.
What will happen to the transaction A.
Also, what will be state of transaction if i have configured Mirroring with High Performance Mode (Asynchronous Mode).
    Chetan

    1. Transaction is being executed on Principal server and mirroring fails
In this scenario SQL Server would not be able to commit its transaction because it wont be able to send log records to mirror and hence would not be able to get acknowledgement about commit on mirror. Transaction log will grow till it occupies whole space
and then application might stop responding as database would not able to log transactions. DB might also go in unresponsive state
    2. Transaction is completed execution on principal server, it is being executing on mirrored server and mirroring fails
Transaction replay happens almost at same time (with little delay) . The mirror receives and writes the log buffer to disk and records the mirroring_failover_lsn and notifies the principal that the log block has been hardened. If commit has been acknowledged
on mirror and principal both before failover, then after when mirror will come online it will replay transaction. Anything before that would cause rollback on mirror.
    3. Transaction is completed execution on principal server & mirroring server. Before principal server receives confirmation from mirrored server about execution completion, mirroring fails.
Actually this question is bit confusing and in some way incorrect I would like you to read
Table 9: A Safety FULL (Synchronous transfer) example sequence of events.
    in below link
    http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc917680.aspx
The possible answer is rollback on mirror.
Edit: In case of any conflict LSN on both principal and mirror is used to resolve conflict. Remember mirroring does not works in two phase commit like distributed transaction failures to commit on the mirror will not cause a transaction rollback on the principal.

  • Brightness unadjustable for "High Performance" in Switchable Graphics Card Technology

    Hello,
I have just transitioned to Windows 7 Professional on my Thinkpad R400(2787-A31)
However, after installing the Thinkpad Switchable Graphics Card driver, i am unable to adjust my brightness if i am using the High Performance mode. My laptop comes with ATi Radeon 3470 and Intel GMA 4500MHD.
I have already installed most of the drivers, and after some testing i realised that it was the switchable graphics driver that cause this problem. Before installation of this driver, i was on the ATi Radeon all the while and i can change the brightness.
I hope some one can help me with this driver issue. My installation of the drivers was from the support page. All except the PCI Simple Communications Controller has their drivers.
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

    Rosemars,
Thank you very much for solving the problem.
The key solution lies with the BIOS update. For people who cannot get the tool to work(mine keep giving an error message), there's an alternativie BIOS update utility at http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/document.do?lndocid=MIGR-70351
This is for R400 and T400s, for other models please select your model number at the Support page and find the utility.
    Cheers & Thumb Up!

  • High Performance or Energy Saver Mode???

I have had my MBP 17 for over a month and had it on Better Battery mode and I just switched to Higher performance, since I am new with this computer is there really a difference and if so what are they?

In Higher Performance mode you are using a different GPU - the 9600 instead of the 9400 - and it's possible for both GPUs to be used together to improve video and graphic performance. There's also a potential difference in memory usage. The 9600 GPU has dedicated video RAM while the 9400 GPU uses shared RAM, that is part of the physically installed RAM. If you switch to Higher Performance then restart the computer you will recapture the 256 MBs of RAM shared with the 9400 GPU.
As eww has said the 9600 GPU has much higher performance capabilities, requires more power, uses additional dedicated RAM, and therefore generates more heat and consumes more power from the battery if you operate off the AC adaptor.

  • Cpufrequtils: Why should I care, and acpi-cpufreq vs. p4_clockmod

I'm a cpufrequtils newbie. In the years I've been running Arch on my laptop, I've never set it up.
I wonder, why should I care about cpufrequtils? What should I know about the technology as a laptop user? Does the fact that I rarely unplug make a difference?
I also wonder what module I should be using for frequency scaling. The cpufrequtils article recommends acpi-cpufreq, but the article for my specific laptop recommends p4_clockmod (for some unspecified reason).
Any insight would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!

Just modprobe both acpi-cpufreq and p4-clockmod, only one of them should be able to load.
    the article wrote:
For older Intel CPUs, the command above may return with:
FATAL: Error inserting acpi_cpufreq ([...]/acpi-cpufreq.ko): No such device
In this case, replace the kernel module acpi-cpufreq with speedstep-centrino, p4-clockmod or speedstep-ich.
CPU frequency scaling saves power and keeps your processor cooler. It's worth using on a desktop or a server, not just a laptop.
If you use the ondemand governor, and add:
    (sleep 5 && echo 11 > /sys/devices/system/cpu/cpufreq/ondemand/up_threshold)
to /etc/rc.local, you'll have basically zero performance loss. Usually it scales up the CPU at 95%, with this it will do it at 11% (you can't go lower atm).
You can load the  "cpufreq_stats" module and see what it's doing with cpufreq-info. You should notice your laptop fan spin down quite a bit once you set it up.
If you have a watt meter, you can take out the battery and see the power use drop from something like 17w to 12w.

    Hi.

The wiki says [1] for older CPUs, I have to expect this error, but my CPU isn't really old:

    What's wrong?
    Thank you.
    [1] http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Cpufreq#Intel

I have partly solved this issue. While cool'n quiet feature is enabled in my BIOS settings; i have overclocked my cpu from BIOS. That's why cpufreq didn't work. Somehow, my BIOS disables cool'n quiet (altough it shows enabled in settings) when cpu is overclocked. Now i set my cpu to standart clocking and cpu frequency scaling begin to work. However, it runs in performance mode but i have configured it as ondemand in /etc/conf.d/cpufreq settings. Any ideas?
    [SOLVED] :
Somehow, min and max freq were uncommented in /etc/conf.d/cpufreq. I comment them and now it works!

  • Issues with "Higher performance" setting on Macbook Pro with external monitor

    Hi all,
I rarely used the "Higher performance" setting in the Energy Saver pane of System Preferences.
I use my MB connected with an external monitor, with its own screen closed. I tried to switch that setting on and the external monitor seems to repeatedly turn off and on. This strange behaviour vanishes if I open the MB's screen, using it in a double monitor configuration.
Did anyone hear about some similar problem?
p.s.: I don't know if this is the exact location for this thread, any suggestions is welcome

It was set to 1080p, 1920x1080 did not show up as an option (even when holding the option key). 1080p should be equivlant. As as experiment I grabbed another monitor that was not being used. It is a 22 inch LG with a maximum display of 1920x1080, and its currently set to 1920x1080. The issue is a little different, was not detected as a TV this time, but the screen still looks blurry. There may be some improvement but not much.

    Solved
I was running Office in a 'RunVirtual' environment. This man explains it best

Essentially Office and Acrobat are installed Natively however all Office Apps are configured to run in a Virtual environment so that Office Addins which are true AppV applications can be linked into Office.
My 'Empty' 'RunVirtual Office package did not have 'Com Integration' enabled
Adobe Acrobat makes use of a Com Addin for Office, so Office was unable to expose that to Adobe Acrobat until the 'Empty' 'RunVirtual Office package was updated accordingly
