Acquiring DNS server
I am trying to replace a gen 1 time capsule with a gen 2 time capsule. Initially it wouldn't obtain dns server numbers from the cable modem. It reported no internet connection. I then copied the DNS server ID from the porfile of the older time capsule and entered it on the new one. After that the time capsule reports an internet connection, but won't actually resolve any urls. Reconnecting the old time capsule then allowed me to restore connectivity (with the new capsule unplugged.
I think this is in part a cable modem problem, but sould be appreciative of any suggestions.
thanks
How are your DNS addresses served from your ISP? Dynamic or static? I would try resetting the TC and setting it up as new - if you can get an internet connection from your modem directly to your Mac then there should be no issues in assigning DNS to the new TC?

Does DNS server cache forwarded request responses?
Hi,
Please excuse my ignorance. I am new to OSX Server and DNS. I setup OSX Server on my Mountain Lion system and configured the DNS server. It forwards requests which it cannot resolve to my service provider's DNS.
I am wondering if the responses to those forwarded requests are cached by the OSX Server so that the next time a request comes through they can be handled locally?
If they are, is there a way I can see what the DNS server has cached?
Thanks.There are caches all over.
OS X client caches DNS responses.
See the command-line dscacheutil tool for poking around with that.
OS X Server DNS server also caches responses.
The BIND9 rndc tool is used for poking around in the ISC BIND9 DNS server, as is included with OS X Server.
sudo rndc -p 54 dumpdb -all
TCP port 54 is the management port used by default in the OS X Server version I've checked, where other installations of BIND9 will use TCP port 953 for that. To confirm the port, go have a look at the named.conf file for the "control" declaration. That file is usually either in /etc/named.conf, or it can be stored in /library/server/named in some OS X Server versions. Once the rndc command completes, go look in the directory where named.conf resides for the file named named_dump.db. That's a text file with the dump.
If you want to learn the innards of DNS as implemented by recent ISC BIND servers, acquire a copy of Cricket Liu's DNS and BIND book. The 5th edition was current, when last I checked.
Barring cases where the upstream provider offers DNS-based filtering or such, forwarding requests is usually an extra hop in the DNS translations that — unless you're hitting the same domains as other folks on your server — might not pay off. If the translation isn't in the ISP's DNS caches, then the usual series of queries of other root and authoritative DNS servers will ensue; you've added a hop.
If you do want to use a gonzo-scale DNS server as a forwarding server — I'd expect higher-scale and larger caches and likely also higher-availability than what most any other ISP is likely running — then Google DNS servers are available at 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4.
Or just eliminate the forwarding servers. -
Moving from Exchange 2007 to 2013 (leaving the DNS Server for it's own dedicated server)
Hello! I am quite new to Exchange and Server management in general. I will do my best to explain my situation.
I am looking to move my Exchange server off of our DNS server. When we installed them on the same server, we did not have the funds to buy 2 separate servers. I am told that it is best to separate the two. I have followed the Microsoft instructions for installing
the prerequisites for Exchange 2013 on a 2012 R2 server, and i am at the point where it wants me to configure AD LDS. As I have active directory running on the current server, I was a little hesitant to just install it without understanding what i am doing.
After the AD LDS is configured, I believe i can move forward with installing Exchange 2013 (all 3 roles will be hosted on the new server), export the mailboxes from 2007 server and import them into the new Exchange 2013 server. After 2013 is up and stable,
I plan on removing 2007 from the old server (DNS server).
What are my next steps after importing the mailboxes? Am i missing important details that I need to change or migrate?
My biggest fear is that nothing works after the installation and moving the mailboxes over. For that case, it makes sense to keep 2007 installed as a fallback for when my installation fails and all i have lost is just my time :)
Current Server:
Windows Server 2008 Standard (64 bit)
1. Roles: Active Directory, DNS, IIS
2. Software: Exchange 2007
New Server:
Windows 2012 R2 Server
1. Roles: ???
1. Software to install: Exchange 2013
Thank you for any help you can provide! These are good resources, but i am still caught up with the active directory issue. Am I able to keep the old Domain/DNS/Active directory on it's current server and move Exchange 2007 off onto a new server (with Exchange 2013)?
In the first example, he is moving everything (domain controller, exchange, users, etc) onto a different server and decommissioning it.I've been told that it would be better practice to keep the domain and exchange on 2 different servers. Is this true?
I go to run commands like:
.\setup /PrepareAD /OrganizationName: orgname /IAcceptExchangeServerLicenseTerms
on the new exchange server, as a prerequisite and it doesnt recognize the command - even after following the steps before. Is this because the new server is not a domain controller? does it have to be? What are the best practices for setting up a server(s)
with exchange + domain controller?
Thanks for responding. -
I originally posted this question to the community section and was advised to post it here. Please bear with me as this will be a long post. I'm including the scenarios involving this reoccurring issue, the trouble shooting steps I've already
taken and the results of several diagnostic tools and logs.
I have a Sony VAIOS VPCEBB33FM lap top since 2011. I have had this issue on an off for a long time. I'm at my wit's end. Any new insights or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
Scenario Details
1) Some times it's on and off through out the day, sometimes it won't work all day, and once in a while it will work fine for the entire day.
2) I've had this issue across several wireless services, Clear Network accessed with WiMax, Library Wi-fi, Comcast cable internet using wireless router and Wi-fi, and Comcast Xfinity Wi-Fi, to name a few examples.
3) Other devices in the household or library will work with no problems such as my smart phone or my roommates' laptops or desktop computers.
4) Once in a while, the built-in wireless adapter is not found and I have to reinstall the driver. Also the diagnostic tool has had to reset my adapter on an increasing basis.
5) I had my hard drive replaced in December 2014 and my system restored from the System Restore disks that came with it when I bought the laptop. Even though I've been online on an infrequent basis it worked just fine for a while. Now that
I've been online a bit more I'm having the same issues again.
Below are my attempts at trouble shooting so far but I still have not been able to consistently resolve my DNS issues
1) Restarting my adapter
2) Turning off my laptop and removing the power supply for 5-10 minutes before turning it back on.
3) Using the IP Config in Command Prompt
ipconfig /flushdns
ipconfig /registerdns
ipconfig /release
ipconfig /renew
4) Using the NetSh reset in Command Prompt and restarting my laptop
netsh int ip reset c:\resetlog.txt
netsh winsock reset
ipconfig /flushdns
[restart laptop]
5) Configuring the TCP/IP in several settings
Select Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4), and then click Properties.
I have used the following settings:
a) Obtain an DNS server address automatically
b) OpenDNS
208 67 222 222
208 67 220 220
c) Google DNS
8 8 8 8
8 8 4 4
6) Updating the driver for my Intel Centrino(R) Advanced-N 6250 AGN and Intel Centrino(R) WIMAX 6250 from the Intel website previous having my laptop wiped clean in 2014. It still did not resolve the issue. My laptop
manufacturer as not come up with an driver update for my adapter since 2010. I haven't tried to update the adapter driver from Intel's website since having my laptop repaired due to the fact that Intel strongly recommending using the manufacturer's updates
instead and frankly it didn't make much of a difference when I did it the first time.
7) The last one I've tried as of today is going into Services and changing the start up type to automatic for the following:
Computer Browser [changed from manual to automatic]
DHCP Client [already set to automatic]
DNS Client [already set to automatic]
Network Connections [already set to automatic]
Network Location Awareness [changed from manual to automatic]
Remote Procedure Call (RPC) [already set to automatic]
Server [already set to automatic]
TCP/IP Netbios helper [already set to automatic]
Workstation [already set to automatic]
...and I'm still having DNS issues.
My only guessing are that my laptop came with a lemon adapter that needs to be replaced, some advanced setting(s) that I'm not aware off, or my firewall/anti-virus is interfering. I've used Symmantic Anti-virus and Firewall in the past and currently
Avast Anti-Virus with Microsoft Network Firewall. I've had DNS issues with both anti-virus/firewall set ups.
Below are the results from the diagnostics and tests that I've ran.

DNS Server problems with ASA 5505
Hi guys,
we setup a new ASA 5505 which is mainly used as our VPN gateway. The ASA is configured and controlled by our ISP (and this is where the problem starts )) and they somehow cannot manage to get the VPN settings really working.
So, here is our problem.
our machines(Windows 7) are configured to get the network settings through DHCP (Windows 2012 Server).
Before I connect with AnyConnect to our VPN gateway, the DNS Server setting in the network settings for the adapters(IPv4) are set to 'dynamic'
When I now connect, this setting is changes to a statc entry (which is our DNS server).
When disconnecting, it is not reverted back, which means I have to do this always manually.
What I do not understand is the fact, that the DNS server is set for all the adapters, shouldtn't it be only set to the anyconnect adapter?.
The interesting thing is, that when I connect to a different ASA, this does not happen. The ISP is now saying, that the machines are configured exactly the same and that they cannot reproduce, but I can't believe this.
This issue shows up at every machine which connects to our vpn, so it is not only a single machine which might be misconfigured.
Do you have any idea what might cause this issue?
btw, the second ASA (which works) is from our partner company, so we cannot simply copy the config
THanks in advance
PatrickNice to see someone from BT has addressed your issue
I have this exact same problem, seems completely bizarre, I'm pretty sure I had the same problem with the original home hub (i have the latest one now). Can you confirm whether the problem does affect anyone with a bt home hub and not just the one that the dyndns is pointing at? I'll try and confirm by hitting your domain from my home connection. -
How many DNS record need to create in Internal & external DNS server for exchange?
Hi friends,
I recently installed Exchange Server 2010 in my organization for testing purpose and I've register a pubic ip too for exchange server on godaddy.com. How many
internal & External DNS records reqired to configure on external & Internal dns server so my all feature like Auto-discover, Activ -sync,& webmail start working perfectly.
It's my first time configuring exchange for a organization.
Thanks & Regards,
Pradeep ChauguleHi,
Just as what ManU Philip said, you need to create
Autodiscovery.domaincom and mail.domain.com for external dns server.
Generally, you configure your Exchange Servers as DNS clients of your internal DNS server.

Hello I'm having a no dns server problem on my time capsule
Hello I'm having this same problem:
Sammy Stefanki
Apr 11, 2012 2:20 PM
Hi everyone,
I just bought a new AirPort Express and Comcast is my ISP. I ditched my old Belkin wireless router, connected the Comcast modem directly to my AirPort Express, and it appears to be working great. I can access the internet wirelessly and also play music using AirPlay through my stereo speakers.
However, when I open the AirPort Utility, the utility tells me that I have two problems with my AirPort Express:
Apparently I have no internet connection (the utility tells me that "Your AirPort base station does not have a valid IP address."), even though I can access the internet just fine.
I don't appear to have any DNS server addresses (the utility tells me that "This AirPort base station doesn't have any DNS server addresses and might have trouble connecting to the internet.")
Does anyone know if these are serious problems that I need to address, or can they be ignored? I don't want to start tinkering with the AirPort Express's settings until I am better informed, because right now everything is working as far as my access to the internet is concerned.
and I tried to :

Anytime you change networking hardware, it is always a good idea to perform a complete power recycle of your networking components.
I would recommend that you do the following as a minimum:
Power-down the modem, AirPort base station, and computer(s).
Disconnect the AirPort base station from the Internet broadband modem.
While all of the devices are powered-down, perform a "factory default" reset on the base station. This will get it back to its "out-of-the-box" configuration and make setting it up much easier, especially if you use the "Assist me" process within the AirPort Utility. (ref: Resetting an AirPort Base Station or Time Capsule)
After the base station resets, go ahead and power it back down.
Reconnect the AirPort base station to the Internet broadband modem. For the Extreme and Time Capsule, be sure to connect the cable to the base station's WAN (circle-of-dots) port.
Power-up the modem; wait at least 10-15 minutes to allow it adequate time to initialize.
Power-up the AirPort base station; wait at least 5-10 minutes. Note: The AirPort's status light may continue to flash amber after it has intialized. That is because, there may be some additional configuration items necessary, like setting up wireless security, before the overall setup is completed to get a green status.
Power-up your computer(s).
In this basic configuration, the AirPort base station will broadcast an unsecured wireless network with a Network Name (SSID) of Apple Network NNNNNN. Network clients, connected to the base station either by wire or wireless, should now be able to access the Internet through the ISP's modem. Once Internet connectivity has been verified, you can use the AirPort Utility to configure the base station for wireless security and any other desired options. Please post back your results.
BUT NOTHING IT STILL SHOWS NO INTERNET CONNECTON on my capsule and NO DNS SERVER ...
I have tried to HARD RESET it resets ( with a Network Name (SSID) of Apple Network NNNNNN) and it connects to internet, it also says setuo complete in airport utility but once I go back into Airport utily cause Time capsule is still flashing amber it says NO INTERNET CONNECTION and NO DNS SERVER ...
anyone has any suggestions PLEASE and Thank youCheck the Ethernet connection to the AirPort Express. Make sure that the Ethernet connection from the Comcast modem is connected to the WAN port on the back of the AirPort Express. The WAN port is the one with the circle of dots shown over the port.
It sounds like you are connected to the Ethernet LAN port. -
Worked fine for about a couple of weeks after my son -law installed the time capsule. I can access the Internet both from my wife's I phone and from my desktop. I think that I need to get the DNS server numbers and put them in the two blanks; but where do I get them? Thanks, Jim
If the modem is also a router, either use the modem in bridge and run pppoe client on the TC.. that is assuming ADSL or similar eg vdsl. If it is cable service.. and the modem is a router, then bridge the TC.. go to internet page and select connect by ethernet and below that set connection sharing to bridge.
Please tell us more about the modem if the above gives you issues. -
External DNS server not replicating records to secondary after migration from 2003 to 2012
Hi
I have a query relating to 2012 Server and DNS.
Last week we de-commissioned our primary external DNS server (Windows 2003 Server) and moved the role over to a new Windows 2012 server.
Since this point replication to our secondary server (3rd party hosted) does not seem to occur and our DNS records seem to have expired on the secondary server as we cannot look these up via nslookup.
I cannot see any failures in the event log of the server; I have checked our external firewall logs and nothing is being blocked inbound/ outbound as far as I can see. And the server’s local firewall has been disabled.
The server is a standalone server in a workgroup with a standard filebased primary zone, with no AD integration and recursion disabled.
When I created the zone I copied the .dns file from the old server and selected this in the interface during the creation of the zone on the new server. The new server has the same internal and external IP as the old server and the old server is off-line.
I have also manually increased the serial number of the zone and still no joy.
One thing that I have noticed is when I open the zones properties/Name Servers and click edit on the external nameserver I get the infamous "The server with this IP address is not authoritative for the required zone" error.
Any help Would be appreciated, thanks in advanceNice to hear that you are close in finding the problem. So in short:
You have enabled Zone transfers in DNS management console for the applicable zone
You have verified that your DNS is listening to the correct interfaces
You have enabled firewall rules to accept TCP and UDP traffic to port 53
You have checked if "BIND secondaries" option is applicable to your case
You have initiated a zone transfer from the secondary server

Internal DNS server and NAT routing issue.
Hi -- I am not terribly experienced with DNS and I am running into an issue that I can't seem to resolve. My company.com DNS information is hosted by an outside ISP for email, web, etc... but I have configured an A record there to point to the public IP to my mac os x server (server.company.com).
We have a cisco router configured with one to one NAT from the public IP to the internal IP for our server in a 192.168.15.x subnet. The same router is running DHCP and and NAT on that subnet under a different public IP provided by our ISP.
Our server is running DNS with recursion and has a "company.private" zone set up for internal services and machine names. Thus, the server is accessible via "server.company.com" from the outside and "server.company.private" from the private LAN.
The problem is that I would like to be able to access some services simply via "server.company.com" both inside and outside the private network. Now, accessing the "server.company.com" services from the private lan does not work because the name resolves to the external IP and the external IP cannot be used internally due to NAT.
Is there a way to configure my internal DNS server to respond with the appropriate private address when receiving a query only to "server.company.com" and forward requests on for anything else on "company.com"?
I know that I could manually duplicate all entries for our domain from my ISP and host the same entries for internal clients, but it would be much easier to only have our server handle requests for itself. The server is running OS X Server 10.4.11.
ThanksIs there a way to configure my internal DNS server to respond with the appropriate private address when receiving a query only to "server.company.com" and forward requests on for anything else on "company.com"?
Ordinarily, no. Once your server thinks it is responsible for a zone (e.g. company.com) then it will answer all queries for that domain and never pass them upstream. Therefore you'd have to replicate all the zone data, including all the public records, and maintain them both.
The one possible exception to this (I haven't tried) is to create a zone for server.company.com that has your internal address. In theory (like I said, I haven't tried this), the server should respond to 'server.company.com' lookups with its own zone data and defer all other lookups (including other company.com names since they're not in a zone it controls). Might be worth trying. -
How do I close an open DNS Server
I have received an email from my internet provider stating I have an open DNS Server and my network has been used to attack other networks (DOS) Denial of service. I can't figure out how to secure my network. or close the open DNS server.
You should at least update your Mac to 10.6.8 although I am not sure there are any particular security issues that would be there.
Of course running later OS is always better.. as the latest security updates are implemented in the most recent OS.. but I am not sure one follows the other as some weaknesses are introduced as well in later OS. Any security updates should certainly be installed.
The main point is what modem and what router do you have?
There are a number of these notices being sent to users with apple routers which are hard to believe can be involved. It is more likely the ISP equipment. But we cannot really help you with exact details of your network .. or any more precise details the ISP has given you.
Ring up and talk to their technical help dept. and ask for their help. Even if they won't help you fix apple router.. put the modem in router mode or buy a new modem with router mode and change the apple router to bridge.. then the issue is not caused by you and the ISP can remotely adjust their own box. -
How to set up loopback# as source fro NTP and/or built-in DNS server ?
I have created a loopback# interface which I would like to be used as the router source interface for the NTP client and/or built-in DNS server so everything originating whithin the router has only one and unique IP address (such as: logging source-interface Loopback#)
The documentation explains how to create virtual interfaces but I cannot find how to associate them to the mentioned services except logging.
IOS is 12.4.15T.9For DNS, maybe this would do the trick:

I have a domain name(domain.com) DNS hosted at my ISP. I also have 3 sub domains DNS hosted at the same ISP pointing to various external ip addresses (mail.domain.com, vpn.domain.com and ts.domain.com). We want to set up sales.domain.com to point to an
internal 10. IP address. We have AD integrated DNS servers for our 2003 AD domain. The AD domain name is totally different than the hosted domain name in question. I currently edit the host file for a couple of PC's but this isnt practical company wide so
I want to add entries on our internal AD DNS servers to resolve the locally hosted site. If i recall, someone once told me that you cannot just put an A record for one sub domain, I would have to have entries on my 2003 DNS server to resolve anything related
to the domain.com name. Is this accurate? If so, what is the proper way to configure my 2003 AD DNS server to resolve anything domain.com related for my internal users while still allowing my ISP to do the DNS lookup for the internet. On my 2003 AD integrated DNS server...i rightclick forward lookup zone and choose...new zone..primary zone (store zone in AD checkbox checked)..i chose to all DNS servers in the AD domain for replication...zone name sales.domain.com....allow secure updates
option....then i added an A record in that zone...sales.domain.com..pointed that towards my internal 10. IP address...is this correct? It seems to be working correctly for the sales.domain.com DNS record...and i tested the other sub domains...and those look
like they are going to my ISP for DNS resolution...
Is this the correct procedure? I did this on a test AD domain and not my production...i want to make sure i dont break everything under the domain.com by incorrectly adding 1 sub domain.. -
DNS Server Having Intermittent Issues with Open Directory
I work for a school and we're undertaking the large task of moving from Xserves running 10.6.8 to Mac Minis running 10.9. I have a lot of experience with OS X Server (I held ACSA up until they ditched it, and ACTC through the current OS) but I've hit a fairly large snag in configuring our DNS server. We currently run DNS via an AD server that is being retired at the end of the summer, so this is the first time our DNS will be Mac-based. That said, our network is ridiculously simple as we are a very small school. For the most part it's a flat network using the same IP range for our wired and wireless internal clients (we do have a vlan for guests but that's through Aerohive). I configured the DNS by hand, recreating the entries in our AD server (there were only about a dozen) and then adding in things that should have been there in the first place (e.g. printers and some other devices with static IPs that I'd like FQDNs for). Everything seemed to be working fine...until trying to log into Open Directory accounts.
For some background, the DNS server running 10.9 was the first server we upgraded and it was a completely clean install. We run DHCP on another Mac Server currently running 10.6.8 and it does have the proper OD server listed. All DNS entries for the OD server match our current DNS server. The issue is that it's taking some users 5-6 tries to log in with their network accounts. The errors they receive range from the login window shaking to it stating the user cannot log in at this time. This seems to be worse on client machines running 10.9. but it's appearing on machines running 10.6.8-10.9.3.
In my troubleshooting, I found that if I log in as a local user to one of those machines and do a dig for the OD server the results vary, this is where it gets weird. For example, if I dig ourodserver.ourdomain.org it will sometimes return host not found or it will sometimes resolve. If I ping the same thing it will sometimes work (even after stating it cannot resolve the host) and it will sometimes fail. If I then try a dig for the .local (e.g. ourodserver.local) it also yields the same varied results. However, on every machine that I've tested if I then open a Finder window and navigate to the server via the "Shared" menu and connect I have no trouble connecting and then magically my digs and pings in terminal work. If I revert DNS back to point to our old Windows server the issue goes away. I have meticulously combed through that server many many times now and am not seeing any missed entries. Any idea what could be causing this? You must have a working DNS service, and the server's hostname must match its fully-qualified domain name. To confirm, select the server by name in the sidebar of the Server application window, then select the Overview tab. Click the Edit button on the Host Name line. On the Accessing your Server sheet, Domain Name should be selected. Change the Host Name, if necessary. The server must have at least a three-level name (e.g. "server.yourdomain.com"), and the name must not be in the ".local" top-level domain, which is reserved for Bonjour.
The primary DNS server used by the server must be 127.0.0.1 (that is, itself) unless you're using another server for internal DNS. The only DNS server set on the clients should be the internal one, which they should get from DHCP if applicable. -
DNS Server Errors 4015 and 4010
Hi all,
we have upgraded a 2003 Domain to 2012 R2. All DCs now are 2012 R2. The Domain and Forest Level are 2008. Be checking the Eventlogs of the DNS Server we found that we have DNS Error 4010 and 4015 Events repeatedly.
4015:
The DNS server has encountered a critical error from the Active Directory. Check that the Active Directory is functioning properly. The extended error debug information (which may be empty) is "". The event data contains the error.
4010:
The DNS server was unable to create a resource record for f55ab78a-df8d-4c2c-8420-52dc8b5604e2._msdcs.domain.local. in zone Domain.local. The Active Directory definition of this resource record is corrupt or contains an invalid DNS name. The event data contains
the error.
We found that the Errors are available on oll DCs. The errors occurs only after the DNS Server Service are restartet on the DCs.
We check the dcdiag /e /test:dns with all PASS
We check the netlogon Service are successfully update be a restart the _.msdcs records in the Zone if the record are not present
We check the _msdcs.Domain.local Zone, it is in the forest Root Partition and AD integrated. We move it to the root of the DNS like the KB817470 describe
We check the dns by the Best Practices Analyzer, wihtout a error
We check the AD replication by repadmin without error
Thanks for help
