Acrobat 9 Standard - Using Network Drives

Three technical writers here at work use Acrobat 9.1.1 Standard. We all work/edit/save/publish on network drives. We are all experiencing unexplainable crashes, including error messages such as, "This document has been corrupted and cannot be repaired" (or something to that effect). We are beginning to wonder if we should have purchased Professional instead of Standard. Is there any evidence to support the suspicion that Professional is more "network-compatible" than Standard?

Many folks have had problems with network drives. When they work they seem to do fine, but some seem to be broken. As I recall, it may be related to a specific network. The simplest what is to save locally and then copy the files to the network.

  • Using network drive with time machine.  IS IT POSSIBLE?

There are lots of discussion on using network drives with time machine. I have not been able to make them work. Could somebody tell me if this is possible

Time Machine does not back up to network drives, except Time Capsules or USB drives connected to an Airport Extreme, or a drive on a Mac running Leopard.
    Here's the official word: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1733
You may find some "hacks" that might make it work, in some cases, to a degree. But use them at your own risk.
First, since this is *unsupported by Apple,* there's nowhere to go when there's trouble.
Second, you're risking a future update preventing it from working, and perhaps rendering your backups useless.
If you still think this is a good idea, do yourself a favor before you bet your backups on it: be sure it really works, at least for now:
    1. Get a copy of CarbonCopyCloner or SuperDuper! or the like, and make a full bootable clone of your internal HD, on an external disk. Test it by booting from it. Then reboot from your internal HD.
    2. Let TM do it's first, full, initial backup.
    3. Attempt a full system restore (like you'll need when, not if, your internal HD fails), via the instructions in item 14 of the of the Frequently Asked Questions post at the top of this forum.
Again, even if it works today, tomorrow is another day . . .

  • Finder is very slow, particularly when using network drive

I have a mid-2011 Macbook Air, OSX 10.9.4, and Finder is extremely slow, particularly when I am navigating my Time Capsule.  First, a little history.
I have tried the fixes listed in these three threads:
    (1) https://discussions.apple.com/thread/3358265?searchText=finder%20slow
    (2) https://discussions.apple.com/thread/1324280?searchText=Finder%20is%20slow
    (3) https://discussions.apple.com/thread/5495797?start=30&tstart=0
Second, my Time Capsule is new.  I bought it to replace a WD MyBook that used to work really well, and then something changed.  Unfortunately, I assumed that it was some problem on WD's side, so after a year or two of waiting to see if either WD or Apple issued an update to fix it, I assumed it was some kind of file system incompatibility (or other interoperability problem) that wasn't likely to go away, and just sprung for the Time Capsule.  However, after getting all the files on the Time Capsule, the problem remains.  So here's a rundown of what I experience:
When I navigate the directories on my Time Capsule, if I haven't been in a particular folder, it takes a very long time to load the contents.  On average, it will be 30 seconds, but it is not uncommon for it to be over a minute.  This can happen even if a folder is empty or has just a few files in it.  In addition, adding a subfolder and trying to rename it takes a very long time.  After renaming a new folder, it can then take another full minute or more for the folder to actually show the newly assigned name and bounce into line in alphabetical order.
Here are some other observations.  First, my connection is very fast, as I'm directly connected to the Time Capsule (albeit via wireless).  Second, there is clearly something extra going on in Finder that is contributing to this issue, because I navigated to different directories using Terminal and did an "ls" command, and as you would expect, the list fired out virtually instantaneously.  Yet, right after that, if I clicked on that same folder with Finder, it would take a minute or more to display the same file names.
Could it be that the Finder is doing other things at the same time as it is giving me a list of what is in the directory?  For example, could the Finder be loading ALL metadata for each of the files into some database or index being built on the fly every time I pop into a new folder, even if I'm not using a view mode where I am asking to see those other bits of metadata?  If so, that might make sense as I generally am using the network drive to navigate directories of my photographs, and they have a lot more categories of metadata associated with them than do Word docs and PDFs (e.g., date of picture, time of picture, aperture, shutter speed, exposure, etc.).  Or, perhaps is Finder trying to load previews of ALL of the files whenever a directory request is made, so that bouncing through the previews takes less time?  I sort of doubt that, because even after a directory listing finally comes up, it seems to churn a bit on each photo before the preview comes up, which I take as an indication that it's creating each preview only after a request is made for that particular file.  Either way, I will say that in old WinXP and even in the newer Windows 7, if you want to view files in a Detailed setting where you can see other metadata (called "Attributes"), it definitely prioritizes giving you a directory listing, and then continues filling in the various selected Attributes one-by-one after that.  Thus, if you want to sort by the date a photograph was taken (as opposed to its modified or created date, which seem to be default attributes that load as quickly (or nearly as quickly) as the filename), or by the photo's dimensions, it might take a few minutes to load in those attributes for a folder of a couple thousand pictures.  But, critically, if you are not planning on using those attributes, but rather, merely want to see how many files you have in that folder, or select them all and load them into a photo viewer, you won't have to wait for the file system to load the file attributes before you get a listing of the folder's contents.  It seems to me like the Finder, however, might actually be forcing you to wait until it has loaded all of those attributes.
Does the foregoing sound like a plausible explanation of the problem to those out there with knowledge of how Finder actually works?  And if so, does that bring to mind any potential settings that could be turned off or any other work-arounds (since those I've tried have not fixed the issue)?
If anyone has other ideas, I am all ears.  I am pretty annoyed that I sunk time into switching over to a Time Capsule on the assumption that Apple couldn't have had a bug this bad, only to find out that I was wrong.  The biggest irony is that my old WinXP computer used to rip through the folder structures with ease on the MyBook, but my fully updated Air is practically crippled by the same task.

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a test, not a solution. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
    Step 1
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is localized to your user account.
Enable guest logins* and log in as Guest. Don't use the Safari-only “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac.”
While logged in as Guest, you won’t have access to any of your documents or settings. Applications will behave as if you were running them for the first time. Don’t be alarmed by this behavior; it’s normal. If you need any passwords or other personal data in order to complete the test, memorize, print, or write them down before you begin.
Test while logged in as Guest. Same problem?
After testing, log out of the guest account and, in your own account, disable it if you wish. Any files you created in the guest account will be deleted automatically when you log out of it.
*Note: If you’ve activated “Find My Mac” or FileVault, then you can’t enable the Guest account. The “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac” is not the same. Create a new account in which to test, and delete it, including its home folder, after testing.
    Step 2
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party system modifications that load automatically at startup or login, by a peripheral device, by a font conflict, or by corruption of the file system or of certain system caches.
Please take this step regardless of the results of Step 1.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards, if applicable. Start up in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. You must hold down the shift key twice: once when you turn on the computer, and again when you log in.
Note: If FileVault is enabled, or if a firmware password is set, or if the startup volume is a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to start up and run than normal, with limited graphics performance, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and Wi-Fi on certain models. The next normal startup may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem?
After testing, restart as usual (not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of Steps 1 and 2.

  • Home Hub 3 - problems using network drive with OS ...

    Hi ,
I have recently switched back to BT and received the HH3 , all wifi connectivity is good . However , I am having problems connecting to the external hard drive I have plugged into it . We have to macbook pros in the household one running Leopard and mine which unfortunately ( it seems ) is running Lion.
The MBP running leopard can see and connect to the network drive (1tb Seagate Expansion Drive FAT32)perfectly. However I am having problems doing the same via Lion . The HH3 is visible in Finder under shared and the usb_disk folder is visible , however when I click on it to access the external hard drive I am presented with this error :
As I said the MBP running Leopard has no issues and connects perfectly :
I have checked the HH3 which is running the latest firmware and checked to see if there was any firmware update to the Seagate , which the isn't !!
ANY advice or suggestions would be greatly appreciated

Ah! that might be the problem, something residual, I did have a machine dual boot W7 and Ubuntu, now it just runs Unbuntu, but I decided to do a clean install.
I dont think the macs have a problem with HH3, yes I picked that post about dual booting, interesting cos the obvious thing to do would be apply different static ip addresses to each O/S, that way the Hub sees them as static addresses for 2 machines, rather than setting them as dynamic by selecting always use the same ip address.
Anyway there's a recent post on here regarding printers and Lion which got resolved, but again I looked at that from a windows pint of view.
I've googled a couple of links which you have probably already found, https://discussions.apple.com/thread/3213886?start=0&tstart=0 https://discussions.apple.com/thread/3213886?start=0&tstart=0 the second one I know relates to ntfs external drives, but what I'm looking at is the solution using sudo mount and the various switches used.
But you may just have to bite the bullet and do a clean install.

  • RoboHelp 8 runs slow when using network drive...

I have several users at my business that have upgraded from RoboHelp X5 to RoboHelp 8. They are reporting that when they work on projects which are housed on a network drive, RohoHelp performs very slowly (which never seemed to happen before with X5). I have read on several forums that RoboHelp should only be used with projects that are on the local drive, but I cannot find any official recommendation from Adobe about this, nor have I found any explanation as to why the network drive doesn't work well. Has Adobe every officially commented on this, and does anyone know why network drive performance is so lousy? Is there anything that can be done to allow my users to keep on utilizing their network drive without the poor performance? Thanks in advance for any help you folks can provide, I am stumped.

    Hi, and welcome, Robo_Newbie
You're about to become Robo_Oldie real quick
Your RoboHelp projects MUST live on a local drive. You can archive them on a network, but NEVER actually open and edit while they are on the network.
The two reasons most people incorrectly assume they should be on the network is because you want to share with other authors and you want to back them up in case your hard drive crashes. Those are valid reasons, but it doesn't work because the .CPD (an Access database cache file) typically becomes corrupted - not to mention the perfomance issues related to LAN latency.
So what most of us do is to either use the free RoboSource Control that comes with RoboHelp or to work out a manual routine of copying your current work to a LAN for safekeeping and establishing a routine with the other authors on who will work on what, when.
Sorry to break the bad news. That's the reality.

    Hi David,
Touchsmart 2.0 Music Software is unable to access network drives unless you create WMP music Playlists. If you have a couple of thousand Music files then this would become very tedious quickly...
However Touchsmart 3.0 Music is able to access network shared drives, for example:

  • Having problems download Adobe Acrobat Standard using dell digital delivery.

The dell digital delivery and the dell website are both giving us problems. We have the serial/product key but just need a reliable place to download and activate the application from.  Is there anyway to download a trial version of Adobe Acrobat Standard and then activate the install with the serial key we have?

Tdavis710 you may want to try a different web browser.  What version of Acrobat Standard are you trying to download?

  • Acrobat not using default driver settings (HP4250n)

I have my HP4250n default driver settings set to "duplex," (per the advanced settings under Printers and Faxes) but when I go to print in Acrobat Pro 9, I have to manually set the duplex each time to get it to work.  I am using the HP PCL6 driver for Windows XP.
Does anyone know why only Acrobat fails to see the default settings?
    Thanks, any help is appreciated.

Yes, i have struggled with this too.
I found that there are 2 places where you can set the standard settings for your printer. For some reason if only 1 is used, it wont work.
There is one at the general tab of your printer properties and one in the Advanced tab in the same printer properties.
When i make sure these 2 options have the same settings, it works for me.
Dont ask me why. Printer drivers work in mysterious ways if you ask me.

  • Using network drive with iPhoto and iMovie

I bought a QNAP TS 212 NAS Drive and have it successfully set up on my network. I can see the drive and access its content through finder on my iMac. It is even visible in iTunes and am able to play media stored in it. But am unable to view the attached NAS Drive in iPhoto or iMovie. How can I use this NAS drive for storage of pcitures and video using above softwares?

You would be able to store your original files on the NAS with your Library on the internal drive with Aperture.
Note that this means other devices accessing those files will see no edits, just the files as imported from camera.
also since you seem an expert on iPhoto, is there a way to change default storage set up. I want my pictures to be assorted and saved under "album names" rather than year, month and date.
No. If you use iPhoto then the files are never accessed via the Finder, but only through iPhoto. So, how they are stored on the HD is just back end management for iPhoto.
Is there a way to export all the pictures in various albums and have them arranged under separate folders with matching album names?
If you have the most recent iPhoto 11, then yes, it's an option in the export dialogue. If you don't then
Apps like iPhoto2Disk or PhotoShare will help you export to a Folder tree matching your Events.
I would caution you about both iPhoto and Aperture. Neither of these apps have any cross platform ability. Both use virtualisation for lossless processing. Simply, apps from other OSes will not make any sense of these apps. You would need to export everything from them to have edits available to other OSes.

  • A to Z instructions on using networked drive for TM

I've spent a great deal of time over the course of the last three days trying to get TM working on three laptops backing up to an external HD connected via FW to a Mac Mini. At various times I'm getting "volume can't be mounted", "image can't be mounted", and (if I'm not mistaken) some other errors as well. These don't make sense to me because I can invariably see the backup drive from the laptops giving me these error messages. I just can't figure out what's going on. I also seem to be unable to unmount the backup drive from the Mini...I'm always told that the drive is in use, even if it doesn't appear that anything is going on. Even if I reboot the Mini, as soon as it's back up I can't unmount the drive.
is there someplace I can get A to Z instructions on how to make this setup work? There's nothing about what I'm trying to do that should be so difficult, is there? It would be great if the sought after instructions advised me on how to handle the fact that three of the four computers that will be backing up to the drive are wireless (I'll also back up the Mini to the same HD), including what's advised for the first backup.
This feels like a very "un Apple" like experience. I was sure that it would be a snap, but I feel a bit like I'm back in Windows ****. Thanks much!

Any additional thoughts on what to do here? Should I reformat the drive and try again? Do I need to run some code from Terminal? Give up on TM?
    Thanks!

    Hello Community,

    Hey David,
I checked the drive and share permissions, and the service account for SQL Server, in this case named "sqlsvc" has been granted full permission to both.  I tried the script but it also failed, the code is below:
    DATABASE[TestDb]TO
    DISK=N'\\sqlclus02\SharePointBackup\TestDb.bak'WITHNOFORMAT,NOINIT,
    NAME=N'TestDb-Full
    Database Backup',SKIP,NOREWIND,NOUNLOAD,
    STATS=10
Also, I haven't been able to confirm that the sqlsvc account is a domain account, but I do know the server is clustered.
    Thanks!

  • Save Dialog - network drives

    Hi,
For some time I have had an issues using the Adobe "Save as" Dialog in Photoshop CS3.  If I switch to use this dialog the "save" button is greyed out when I am trying to save to a network drive (a ReadyNAS box).  If I change to the OS dialog it is not greyed out and the save works fine.  Is this a feature or a bug or incorrect configuration?  Not least does it happen to anyone else?

I'm not seeing that behavior with Photoshop CS3.  I just tried it on a Vista x64 test system.
Photoshop in general does not like you to use network drives.  They really want you to save the file locally, then copy it to/from network resources yourself.  The thinking seems to be that if you work from a share and keep your master files there, the chance of you losing your work is MUCH greater than if you're saving to a hard drive.  That said, I've never had a problem saving directly to a share.
Have you tried pressing the button anyway?
Do you have permissions to write files to the folder you're pointing to?

  • Will  Networks Drives are in  the roadmap in Final Cut X? if so, what is the timing for this version?

    Hello,
We have  some customers that desire to keep in the apple strategy with the features of FCP v7.  With the new FCP X they lose the ability to share the media through different workflows. Ingest, Editing, trascoding, MAM and delivery will take long time moving the data from SAN Drives.
Some of them currently use the Scale out architecture as advantage to reduce the time to produce media  faster but it is necesary to deliver this production to a network drive. So, is there  any workaround or timing to deliver the FCP X version to use network drives?  Will it be soon?
    I´ll appreciate any news.
    Julio Ortiz

Speculation about future software is against the terms of use of the forum.
Network drives can currently be used and accessed from FCP. Only one FCP editor can access it at a time.

  • Acrobat Standard help pdf

    Hey all,
After getting terrible support trying to find out why adobe acrobat help function was not working behind our work proxy and finally getting a response "we do not support the use of our apps behind proxies"
I have made the decision to make the help file offline by downloading the help docs and creating a new shortcut in the Help menu to point to it...I have done this in reader with no problems but with Acrobat I am having two issue....
    1. Where can I get a local copy of Acrobat Standard help pdf? I see plenty of support sites pointing to the professional document but none for Acrobat standard.
    2. How do I disable the Acrobat X Help meny item? I have done this in reader with teh following js command -
              app.hideMenuItem("HelpReader");
But in Acrobat it must be different and "HelpAcrobat" doesn't work either...
    Hope someone can help!
    cheers
