Add a Partition to External HD with data

Hello all,
I'm trying to move my iTunes library from my external HD to my work PC(laptop). The library was on my MacBook Pro originally, however when I rec'd Snow Leopard I needed to back everything up on my external to wipe my laptop to do a fresh install. Stupidly, I formatted the external for Mac only (not Fat32) so it won't directly read on my PC to pull off my music. I'm wondering how I can go about adding a new partition to the external on my MacBook without losing the current data on it so I can format that partition for Fat32 to be able to use it for both laptops.
Thank you,
Jason

It sounds like your drive has the Apple Partition Map scheme; MS-DOS (FAT) and ExFAT formats are not available on such disks. See #8 in that link.
You'd have to copy everything somewhere, reformat it with the GUID Partition Map Scheme, and the formats you'd like. Those two can be read and written by Macs and PCs without 3rd party programs.
There are some 3rd-party programs that will let PCs use Mac OS Extended partitions. I don't do Windoze myself, and don't recall the names offhand, but you should be able to find them via Google or the +Windows Compatibility+ forums here.

  • Cloning TC backups to external HD with data on it already - should i partition the HD? How to do this safely?

hi. i found a discussion directing how to clone backups onto a HD for proper backup transfer. what it didn't anwer for me, was something else. i have data on the HD i am trying to use as a temp destination for my TC backups. Should i partition the destination drive and have my old data on one volume - TC backup on the other? please help if you could with instructions on how to do it safely without distroying my data! THANKS A BUNCH!
OS mountain lion, 1st gen TC, 500gb, destination HD - WD passport for mac, 1tb.

Yes. Time Machine works better if it is in total control of its storage space.
Of course partitioning the drive in a Time Capsule is only possible by removing it and doing the partitioning on another computer.
If this were mine I would get another external drive and connect that to the Time Capsule. Move your data to the new external and allow Time Machine to use the whole internal drive in the Time Capsule instead.

  • Putting mac partition on external HD with a FAT32 partition

Hi there, I have a mac and a pc. I have partitioned my new external hard drive with the pc putting on a 32 gig partition. That leaves 280 gigs not used on the drive. Seeing as the pc isn't letting me put any more FAT32 partitions on it (does anyone know how to get more on it?) I thought I could partition the rest of it in the mac format. I read before that someone else had done that. Is it possible? How do I do it?
    Thanks,
    Wayne Adams

Actually, Mac OSX can partition larger FAT32 Partitions, as well as Window's 98se2, ME, or an APP called "Partition Magic"... upto almost 2 TB, but with FAT32 you'll always be stuck with a Filesize limit of under 4GB.

  • TC - using an existing external HD with Data on it

I just got a TC and I'd like to attach an External HD to it so I can share the files on the HD across the network. (Basically, a NAS).
The files already on the HD don't show up via sharing when connected to the TC.
Files I added to the HD while connected to the TC don't show up when the HD is attached to my Mac directly via USB.
Is there some way to make the same files available regardless of where I attach the drive?

Yes. Time Machine works better if it is in total control of its storage space.

  • Creating Partitions in Existing tables with Data

    Hello everyone,
I want to know what the best way of creating partitions, in tables having data, is .. ???
    thanks
    Rossy Rocs

    There are two ways :
1a Create a new Partitioned Table
1b Copy data from the existing table to the new table
    1c Create Indexes
    1d Rename old table
    1e Rename new table
    OR
    2 Use DBMS_REDEFINITION

  • OSX 10.8.2: cannot add a birthday to a contact with data on MS Exchange server

In "Contacts" (OSX 10.8.2) it is not possible to add a birthday to a contact when the data are stored on a MS Exchange server. This can be done from an iOS device (6.1.2). Why is this? The data field clearly exists in Exchange. A step backward?

For anyone viewing this thread, this issue is specific to "Contacts" in OSX 10.8.2 (now 10.8.3). One can still add a birthday to an Exchange database in "Address Book" in OSX 10.7.5 as suggested by Eric Root. It can also be done using an iOS device (iOS 6.1.3 in my case) and it will appear in "Contacts" in OSX 10.8.2 correctly as noted by Ralph Landry1. What I cannot understnad is why this functionality was taken away in OSX 10.8.2 when it existed in OSX 10.7.5. I have sent my comments to Apple as suggested by Ralph Landry1.

  • OK to repartition external drive w/data using Disk Utility (split in two)?

My Time Machine backup folder on my 500GB external drive just kept growing and growing, nearly filling the drive (which I use for other things). I read that one way to limit Time Machine's appetite is to point it to a partition that is only so big. (Apple: There should be a setttig for this in Control Panel.)
So, I've made 150GB of space on the external drive by deleting the old Time Machine backup folder (this is just for a few minutes, what are the odds the my MBP drive will die? I would like to create a new partition on the drive of, say, 125GB (for the the 100GB drive in my MBP). Then point Time Machine at it...
But I'm a little nervous to do this, since partitioning drives has historically led to significant pain and suffering. I've read that Disk Utility can repartition external drives, with data on them, safely. Is this true? Anyone have experience in this? Thanks.
    ...Rene

    Rene,
No, you cannot dynamically re-partition that one, without first destroying all the data on it by making an initial partition of the entire drive (actually, a new partition map will often be written with a simple format of the drive, but that still destroys all data). In fact, the "Master Boot Record" (MBR) is a Windows thing, and prevents a few Mac functions.

  • How do partition a hard drive with different partition schemes?

How can you partition an external HD with different partition schemes for different partitions? GUID one one partition and Apple Partition Map on another?
    Thanks.

I am trying to add a second partition to my (1TB) external firewire HD. Apparently it was preformatted as "MS-DOS (FAT)" and I started putting lots of files on there. Now the "partition" option in disk utility shows me the one partition that's on there, but all options are grayed-out - I cannot add another partition, it seems, nor change anything on the existing one. Is there any possible solution other than totally erasing the disk and starting from scratch? I would be hard-pressed to find enough disk space to (even temporarily) store the stuff that's already on that HD.

  • How can I partition an external hard drive with data in it? When I select the drive, the partition option is grayed out.

I am having a problem partitioning an external hard drive with data in it.
When I select the partition, everything is grayed out.  I can't add a a partition for some reason.  When I asked this question to other people, they told me to select my partition "io" to do it from there.
As you can see, I can't seem to partition it form there either.  I ran the Verify Disk utility but the volume came out okay.
Any ideas as to what the problem would be?
    Thanks!
    Luis

Select the main hard drive entry (topmost one.) Click on the Partition tab. Shrink the existing partition by grabbing the sizing gadget in the bottom right corner and pushing up until you free up enough space for your second partition. Be sure you do not shrink to less than the space currently occupied by your files. Click on the Add[+] button to create a new partition in the free space. Click on the Apply button and wait until the partitioning is completed.

  • How do I partition an external HD without formatting it or deleting data on it?

I'm using OSX Lion and have an external HD, which is about 40% full. I'd like to add a partition without reformatting it or deleting data if that's possible.
Anyone know how to do this? I've opened up Disk Utility and clicked on the Partition tab and have tried to use the re-size corner to change the size of the current partition, but it is greyed out and I can't sem to get it to work.
Any thoughts on how do to this? Right now my drive is one big partition. I'd like to divide it into two partitions, again, without deleting data if I can avoid it.
    Thanks!

Very possible. However, requires that the HD's formatted as OS X Extended, has the GUID partitioning scheme, and has journaling enabled. If those conditions are met, Disk Utility will do it.

  • Booting Windows 8.1, blinking underscore problem - with data already on partition.

So I updated my OS X software from the App Store (just a newer version of Yosemite than before) not too long ago.  I wanted to boot into windows because I had certain data and applications on there I needed that have no version for Mac.  So I tried booting, but when I boot the windows partition, nothing goes beyond the blinking underscore.  I tried researching the problem; people have had the issue with the blinking underscore, but that is when they tried installing windows [there was no data on the line].  I however installed windows quite a while back and it is stacked with data that is pretty important for me.  If there was a way for me to transfer the data to an external drive or the Mac partition as backup, I'd gladly just re-install windows.  But there's data, I need the data on that partition.  I know it's 100% possible to get the data, but I'm not sure anyone has found a way yet[?].  I've seen solutions that require things like gdisk, but the problem where that stuff would be required is a little different from mine; their partition wouldn't show as being bootable at all, so I didn't try that method (I'm just being cautious, Macs aren't my specialty ) However, in Disk Utility, the partition is labeled as disk0s4, which is similar to those other problems people have had in the past.  If possible, can somebody point me in the right direction, or maybe even walk me through it?  I'd greatly appreciate it.  And if my problem does get solved, can someone suggest a safe way of updating OS X without it corrupting my data on other partitions?

Well the only update other than Yosemite would be Autodesk Sketchbook from the app store, but I doubt that it would have to do with bootcamp, so no, there were no updates other than a new version of Yosemite.  And have testdisk, but do I need to search for lost partitions?  That's an option I can see here. If I need to look specifically for NTFS headers, then maybe I'd needs steps on how to do that.
EDIT: I started running the process to look for lost partitions, and these are the first things that came up:

  • More then 2 partitions on an external drive with a Fat32 partition...

Hey guys. I'm having some troubles with partitioning an external USB drive in disk utility.
I want to have 4 partitions total, 3x MAC OS Extended (journaled) and 1x FAT 32.
I am able to create the partitions (using GPT) fine in disk utility and as far as the OSX is concerned, all the partitions are viewable and work fine however windows machines do not see the fat32 partition. Windows only sees one large GUID partition that it cannot read.
If I reformat the drive (using GPT) with 1 MAC OS Ext (journaled) partition and 1 FAT32 partition, both windows and the Mac find all the partitions and things work as they should.
I want 4 partitions so I can have a data drive for OSX, a bootable copy of the snow leopard install disc, a bootable copy of a fresh snow leopard installation and a windows data drive for exchanging files.
Is there anyway I can do this or do I need to stick to 2 partitions if I want the fat32 partition to be readable by windows?

I would try NTFS. I know that that would prevent you from doing anything with the partition from your Mac, but that's sort of a small price to pay. To compensate partially, you could run MacDrive (mediafour.com) on the Windows machine(s). MacDrive allows Windows machines to read and write Mac formatted drives.
Is there anyway I can do this or do I need to stick to 2 partitions if I want the fat32 partition to be readable by windows?
Could there be a problem with the way Sno is formatting FAT. I never use FAT so I am not quite sure what is going on here. But, many have reported that the Sno Disk Utility no long refers to FAT32, just to FAT, and having FAT formatted, they have FAT problems--i.e., things don't work like they should under FAT32. Maybe you should try formatting with an Install DVD that clears specifies FAT32.
