Adding a Cluster Hyper-V 2012 into SCVMM 2012 SP1 causes a Crash in VMMService.exe

I'm trying to register a 5 node Cluster into SCVMM 2012 SP1 host, but when the registration job is running the SCVMMService crashes and then registration becomes inconsistent.
this is the error log from App Event Viewer:

  • SCOM 2012 RC - SCVMM 2012 RC - Virtual machine manager management group is not getting monitored

    Hi All,
I have integrated SCOM 2012 with SCVMM 2012 environment. I could see two strange behaviors. All these instance are running on Windows 2008 R2 + Sp1 OS along with SQL 2008 R2 for database.
    1) I could see two instance of VirtualmanagerDB
in the Database State view under the Microsoft SQL Server, out of that
one is showing as monitored and another one is
showing as not monitored. Why it is showing two instance of the same database? How can I remove the not monitored one?
    2) In the distributed apps- Virtual machine manager management group is not showing as a monitored item. However the SCVMM server is getting monitored.
I'd appreciate if someone could help me out in understanding and resolving this.
    Regards,

    Hi
I opened up a connect ticket on this on 17th Jan so sorry for not noticing your post earlier. The response was:
Health State dashboard view is targeted to two state views. "Agent Watcher State" and "Agent State". "Agent State" view (view with duplicate entry) is targeted to an abstract class "VMM Agent" which has below child classes.
        VMM Library Agent
        VMM Host Agent
        Guest Agent
For the Dashboard view, we need to taget the view to "Host Agent" not "VMM Agent". When we install VMM, it adds itself as a Library server and that is the reason for duplicate entry (VMM Library Agent).
    Cheers

    Hi Guillaume Pincon,
Please first update both server to latest update and turn off the Windows firewall for narrow down this issue then try build the cluster again, one of the cluster create condition is all the servers should have the same software updates (patches) and service
packs. If all above steps not work please post the second validation error information.

  • Isolated Lab on Hyper-V (Prod) with SCVMM 2012 R2

    Hello,
I currently would like to make littla test lab on my Hyper-V 2012 R2 with SCVMM 2012 R2 at work.
Knowing that there is DC in prod on this Hyper-V, I would like to isolate the lab from the prod without loosing internet access.
I did try with a server gateway but no connectivity and a lot of errors.
It is so easy to do witout VMM that I can't understand why it is so difficult now.
    Please let me know.
    Ollie

You should create a new virtual switch of the type "internal" where the VMs can communicate with the hosts through this switch, and vice versa. Then it will be isolated from the production DC.

  • Hyper-V / NVGRE Gateways / SCVMM 2012 R2

I am currently investigating the roll out of network virtualisation using Hyper-V, Windows Server gateway and SCVMM 2012 R2
I have tested deploying a single WSG in a single datacentre and I can get VMs working with Network Virtualisation.
I have a requirement to deploy network virtualisation in multiple datacentres so that I am able to amongst other things live migrate VMs between datacentres with next to no downtime.
My question is what do I need to deploy to make this work?
For example do I need a WSG in each datacentre and if so are they completely independent of one another or are they aware of one another?
I understand that each datacentre will have its own provider address space but I'm assuming the customer VM network will be the same at each datacentre - this would mean the customer VM network gateway IP would be in two locations but does this matter
if the provider addresses are different?
Is there anyone who has experience configuring WSG / NVGRE at multiple sites who could give some useful tips?
    Thanks
    John.

    Hi Kristian
Thanks for getting back to me.
BTW the NVGRE white paper is excellent so a big thank you!
    To answer your points:
Will the PA network be routable - Yes, I'm assuming I would configure at least one routable PA network per Datacentre - I don't really want to be stretching networks across Datacentres?
Will the hosts in the other datacenter be able to reach the hosts in the primary datacenter where the WSG servers are running -
    Yes
I have now destroyed my lab environment and this might seem like a stupid question but the PA gateway address is located on my router and not the NVGW?
Forgetting HA for a moment would you recommend deploying a NV Gateway per datacentre or is this over complicating things? For example if I live migrated a NV VM from DC1 to DC2 would it use DC2's NVGW for external access or will it still use
    DC1's?
In my head it seems more straight forward to deploy a HA NVGW at one DC which is used by all other DCs and as you suggested use something like Hyper-V Replica. Do you know if this is supported
    Many Thanks
    John.

  • Modifying the size of an SMB 3.0 registered file share in SCVMM 2012 SP1

    Hi -
We are leveraging the Netapp SMI-S 5.0 provider with SCVMM 2012 SP1 to register and use SMB 3.0 file shares on our HV clusters.  Working great after a few early problems.  One thing that we've yet to find is a solution to this problem.
On the netapp side, let's say a volume with size 1TB is created.  Then through SCVMM/SMI-S, a new file share is created within this volume for use with HV clusters/VMs.  Let's say, for example when creating this share through the SCVMM GUI that
you define the file share size as 500gb.  This leaves 500gb free in the parent volume.
How in the world do you modify that file share size from the SCVMM perspective - if you start running low on space within the share.  The free space is definitely there, but we can't seem to find a way from within SCVMM to modify the file share 'size'
(which is a parameter you have to define during file share creation) from original size to something larger (yet still smaller than parent volume size).
Anyone else seen this scenario and/or found a solution?  I apologize if this is already answered elsewhere - just not seeing much on searches.  Thanks in advance -

Ok so we just ran into a similar issue with our netapp. And after digging around my colleagues and I found this document ( https://communities.netapp.com/community/netapp-blogs/msenviro/blog/2014/02/19/data-ontap-smi-s-agent-51--use-netapp-smi-s-provider-to-provision-a-cifs-share-for-smb-30-environments-windows-server-2012-using-scvmm-2012-r2
) had a key passage: "SMIS create/manage shares created on qtree with quota assigned to it."
So taking that the SMI-S agent uses quotas on the volume to determine the 'file share' size you can adjust the space available to Hyper-V by adjusting the quota on the volume, even increasing it to beyond the space available in the volume. We are actually
doing this because of dedupe savings on our hyper-v store.
IMPORTANT - the SMI-S agent only scans every 5 minutes, so when you make a quota change it may take up to 5 minutes for it to be detected... so wait
6 minutes and then refresh the storage provider.  We were working with SCVMM 2012 R2 but this should be reflected with SCVMM 2012 SP1 if im not mistaken.

  • I can't find failover cluster management after creating hyper-v cluster on SCVMM 2012 R2

I've created a hyper-v cluster on scvmm 2012 r2 but I can't find the failover cluster manager to move storage resources. all hosts are showing to have hyperv role and failover clustering feature installed. disk Witness in Quorum is good, same as for the
other CSV lun. Please help me Microsoft. Thank you.

The management consoles are not getting installed while building the cluster through SCVMM. However, its not mandatory to have the management tools on the server. You can have it on a different machine with this management tools installed and connect to
    this cluster remotely.

  • After host crash - cluster no longer working correctly in SCVMM 2012

    Hi
one of our nodes in our cluster crashed. It came back. All the VMs on this host were running on other hosts so failover worked fine BUT for 2 VMs. One of those 2 VMs is - according to VMM - running on the crashed host. The other VM is - according to VMM
    - running on another host node which did not fail.
I have a lot of job errors saying that VMM library object virtuals disk is missing of those two VMs. So I looked into the FailoverManager. There I was able to see that the VMs are running on totaly different host nodes then what VMM tells me. In addition
those VMs work just fine. I connected to both of them over Hpyer-V and they are just fine and the application also work without a problem. Please not those VMs are not shown twice or missing in VMM.
Live Migration to the Host node that crashed is no longer possible. But when looking into the status on VMM - it tells me that everything is fine. From Hpyer-V Manager I am able to do live migration to this host. But no longer from VMM console.
I rebooted the host node with no change. I refreshed the host nodes (all) in FailoverManager and in SCVMM, I refreshed the cluster... nothing. So I wanted to remove the cluster from SCVMM and re-add it. Doesn't work... It started with the first host and
after that my cluster was somewhat broken (I thought that removing cluster - NOT "uncluster" - wouldn't have an effect on the cluster itself - well I was wrong). Anyway I repaired the cluster it is back into VMM but I still have the issues with the VMs. There
are only warning on the VMM server that the library object (vhd) is missing but on the cluster nodes itself there are no errors.
Any ideas what I could do. I have no clue what to do about the VM which is supposed to be on this host but in FailoverManager it is on a totally different server. Any ideas?

    Hi,
version is SCVMM 2012 RC - yes there were errors with live migration but unfortunately I receive so many warning messages now (about missing library objects for vhd files) that the errors from tuesday are already gone. I guess they might be in database ...
The log files you asked for are from 2011 when the cluster was created - no entries after that.
No the cluster is not in Maintenance or Pause mode - i checked that. Remove and re-join the cluster with VMM 2012 RC was already tried. As described above: that failed - the first cluster node was removed and after that the job failed in VMM. I found the
error message quite ironic because it said that "cluster node 1" is no longer reachable. Nooo really... it just had been removed a second before the "remove cluster" job failed. Unfortunately this job played havoc with my cluster. It took me 4 hours to bring
    it back online (mostly VMs).
The good thing is, my cluster is somewhat working again - meaning after I repaired it and was able to re-add the missing cluster node back into VMM live migration now works both from Hyper-V and from SCVMM. The VERY bad part is that now several more VMs
are - according to VMM - runing on "cluster node 1" while the Failover Manager says they are runing on "cluster node 2 or 3...". In addition I get many more warning messages. This error is the one I am trying to eleminate. As said I haven't found anything
which helped me narrow done a solution. Everything I tried so far didn't have any response or - like the cluster - it made things quite bad (temporary). I checked the Event logs on the cluster nodes and VMM itself. Currently there are no error messages there.
    Warning messages in VMM:
Warning (23234) VM Refresher encountered an error while creating or updating <vm name> with id XXXXX. VMM cannot find VirutalHardDisk object XXX. Ensure the library object is valid, and then try the operation again.
Warning (10647) The virtual network adapter for the virtual machine <vm name> is connected to a virtual network switch <swtich name> that is not valid.
Does anyone know how to change the time interval of the "VM Refresher"? I get those warning messages for each VM every 2 min. As there are several VMs affected by now I have several thousend messages each day...

  • Live Migration between two WS2012 R2 Clusters with SCVMM 2012 R2 creates multiple objects on Cluster

    Hi,
I'm seeing an issue when migrating VM's between two 2012 R2 Hyper-V Clusters, using VMM 2012 R2, that have their Storage provided by a 4 Node Scale Out File Server Cluster that the two clusters share.
A migration between the two clusters is successful and the VM is operation but I'm left with two roles added to the cluster the VM has moved to instead of the expected one.
For example: Say I have a VM that was created on cluster A with SCVMM, resulting in a name of : "SCVMM Test-01 Resources"
I then do a live migration to Cluster B which has access to the same storage and then I end up with two new roles instead of one.
    "SCVMM abw-app-fl-01 Resources" and "abw-app-fl-01"
The "SCVMM abw-app-fl-01 Resources" is left in an unknown state and "abw-app-fl-01" is operational.
I can safely delete "SCVMM abw-app-fl-01 Resources" and everything still works but it looks like something is failing during the process.
    Has anyone else seen this?
I'll probably have one of my guys open a support ticket in the new year but was wondering if anyone else is seeing this.
    Kind regards,
    Jas :)

In my case the VMs where created in VMM in my one and only Hyper-V cluster (that's been created and is managed by VMM).
All Higly Available VM:s have a FCM role named "SCVMM vmname" where vmname is the name if the VM in VMM. On top of that a lot
of VM:s, but not all,  have a second role name named vmname. Lots of name in that sentence.
All VMs that have duplicates are using the role named vmname.
I thought it had to do with whether a VM had been migrated so I took one that never had been migrated and did. It did not get a duplicate.
Is there any progress on this?

  • Hyper-V 2012 VM Placement by SCVMM 2012 SP1

    Hi,
I'd like to understand the logic behind VM placement in SCVMM 2012 SP1 and a 8 Node Hyper-v 2012 cluster. Each Node has 32GB RAM and each is a completely identical HP DL360.
Here is the current placement as performed by SCVMM
    Node 1: 1 VM
    Node 2: 2 VM's
    Node 3: 6 VM's
    Node 4: 1 VM
    Node 5: 2 VM's
    Node 6: 7 VM's
    Node 7: 1 VM
    Node 8: 1 VM
There are 2 x 16GB VM's, the rest of between 2GB and 8GB. Each of the overloaded hosts has a 16GB VM running on it.
I have a cluster reserve set to 1 Node failure. Why has it decided to favour Node 3 and 6? I appreciate the Maths to work out Node suitability are very complex but this seems rather odd.
    Thanks in advance.
    Eddie

    Hi,
Please check “Preferred Owners” settings for each clustered resource.
There are some scenarios to help you understand failover process:
Scenario 1: If a node or resource fails and the Preferred Owner List has been defined, the Cluster Service fails the Group to the next available node in the Node List. The Node List is composed of the Preferred Owners List followed by the remaining nodes
arranged by their Node ID. The Node ID is defined when a node is joined to a cluster or if a node is evicted or and re-added.
Scenario 2A: If a resource fails and the Preferred Owner List is not set, the Group follows a Node List much like it did in Scenario 1. The Node List is built only from the Node ID. Upon a node or resource failure, resources follow a downward path failing
to the subsequent node in the Node List. When it reaches the last listed node in the Node List, it starts with the first node in the Node List.
Scenario 2B: If a node fails and the Preferred Owner List is not set for a group on that node, then an available node will be selected randomly for the group to be moved to. This will distribute the groups among the available nodes.
Scenario 3: If a Cluster administrator manually chooses Move group and selects Best Possible and the Preferred Owner List is configured, the Group will always start at the top of the Node List. As in Scenario 1, the Node List is composed of the Preferred
Owner List and the installation order.
Scenario 4: If, as Cluster administrator, you manually choose Move group and you select Best Possible and the Preferred Owner List is not configured, an active node is chosen randomly to host the group. Without the Preferred Owner List configured, it is
possible that a Group may move to a Node that is already running several other Groups.
We recommend that you configure the Preferred Owner list on a large node cluster if the load between nodes is significantly different or if the nodes are not homogeneous.

  • Errors Performing V2V Conversions from ESX 5.5 to Hyper-V 2012 R2 using SCVMM 2012 R2

I've successfully added my vSphere server and 2 ESXi 5.5 hosts to my SCVMM 2012 R2 server.
    I have also added my 2 Hyper-V 2012 R2 hosts as well.
When I attempt to do a V2V conversion of a VM from 1 of my ESX hosts to Hyper-V, I receive - "Error (2901) The operation did not complete successfully because of a parameter or call sequence that is not valid. The parameter is incorrect."
When I go into the details of the job in VMM it shows "1.4 Convert VMDK to virtual hard disk - Failed" and "1.4.1 Deploy file (using HTTP) - Failed"
Any help resolving this would be appreciated.
Also, I can do V2V conversions using the same ESX and Hyper-V hosts without any issues using Microsoft Virtual Machine Converter 2.0, but my manager wants me to use VMM.
    Thanks!

Quite honestly, building fresh on the platform and migrating the apps / services is always the best way to go
PlateSpin was the last product I knew that had a Linux conversion utility.   Even found this:
    http://blogs.technet.com/b/enterprise_admin/archive/2010/04/26/hyper-v-linux-p2v-with-platespin.aspx
No idea the current status of PlateSpin.  They were the gold standard back in 2008.
But honestly, it can be painful.  It all depends on the hardware now.
With Hyper-V the end boot device is IDE - so if the machine now runs on SCSI, the boot loader pointers need to be modified (if you can find a tool to bring the disk forward).
Now, that said.  Hyper-V can convert a physical disk to VHD.  That is a stealth feature that has been there from the beginning.  I can't recall if it is block by block, or if the file system must be known for the copy to succeed.
You mount the disk on the Hyper-V Server and create a new VHD from a physical disk.
The biggest issue with the conversion utilities is that Windows does not know the Linux file systems.  So you need some Linux tool to do it.
I know that VMware had a converter that handled Linux - but again, you have to manually fixup the hardware in the boot menu.

  • Installing SCVMM 2012 r2 in a VM on Hyper-V 2012 and windows failover cluseter

    Hi,
I am planning to configure scvmm 2012 r2 that will be managing 30 hyper-v host servers, please guide me will it be ok if i install and configure both scvmm 2012 r2 and sql server 2012 on same VM running on Hyper-V Failover Cluster ?
    Regards,
    Afzal
    [email protected]

    Hi,
Like most of the time, there is a lot of possible topology to achieve your design.
Installing VMM and the database in a virtual machine on the same cluster that it manage is a supported scenario.
The first question you have to ask is : What is the availability level i need for my VMM infrastructure ?If
you shutdown the SCVMM instance for patching, you are not able to deploy new VM from template, and not able to create and manage Virtual Networks. It don't affect existing VM or Virtual Networks. Does this break your SLA ?
Most of the time, VMM don't need a guest cluster (unless you are a hosting provider with provisionning portal
    available 24/24 7/7).
The main advice i will give you is :
Keep it simple as possible !
Don't build complex infrastructure if you don't need to achieve a very hight level of availability.
Availability, complexity and management cost have a exponential relation.
For large deployment, you can use a dedicated Hyper-V cluster to deploy System Center and infrastructures services (SCVMM, SCOM etc...) But there is nothing wrong in deploying VMM in the same cluster as the VM it manage. The design you have to achieve should
be thinking in terms of availability and serviceability.
I don't think that 30 Hyper-V hosts need a dedicated SQL Guest Cluster.
If you install VMM on one VM and SQL on another, you will not achieve more performances, but your VMM instance
    will be less "portable".
    Cheer.
    Cedric.

    so, how to solve it?
    thanks alot.

    Old thread..
But I got the same problem creating a cluster on SCVMM 2012 R2. To get around it I instead created the cluster using powershell and it worked great:
    $HostName1 = "HOST01"
    $HostName2 = "HOST02"
    $Clustername = "CLUSTER01"
    $ClusterIP = "192.168.1.50"
    $VMMRunAsAccount = "VMM_AdminAccount"
    $credential = Get-SCRunAsAccount -Name $VMMRunAsAccount
    $hostsList = @()
    $hostsList += Get-SCVMHost -Computername $HostName1
    $hostsList += Get-SCVMHost -Computername $HostName2
    Install-SCVMHostCluster -ClusterName $Clustername -VMHost $hostsList -RunAsynchronously -Credential $credential -ClusterIPAddress $ClusterIP

  • VMware ESX Cluster Port Groups not Replicated as Network Sites in SCVMM 2012 Logical Switch

    To whom it may concern,
We have added our ESX 4.1 Update 2 Cluster that's being managed by VMware vCenter to SCVMM 2012 because we want to create a private cloud and use the resources of the ESX cluster. SCVMM is replicating all the vSwitch from the ESX cluster as a logical network
but it's not replicating the port groups on the vSwitch as Network Sites associated to the Logical Network.
May you please advise or confirm that this is the normal behaviour of SCVMM? Or is there any way that SCVMM would be able to recognize the port groups associated to the ESX vSwitch and replicate it a a Networks Sites associated to Logical Switches?
Your prompt response will be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks in advance!

    Hi Graham,
    Thanks for your reply.
I understand that we need to configure the port groups in the vCenter server but SCVMM is only replicating the vSwitch as a Logical Network but not the port groups. It should also replicate the port group as a network site associated to the logical network.
On our VMware environment, we have port groups on different VLANs and being mapped to one physical NIC. When creating a VMware VM in a private cloud with a self-service user role we can't select the option to connect the port group that we've created from
the vCenter server. The only option it gives is the logical network (vSwitch) not the port groups within that logical network (vSwitch). Even if we create network site within the logical network (with assigned VLAN) in SCVMM, it randomly selects the port group
within the VMware vSwitch when we create a VM. We need the users with a self-service role to be able to select the port group from our vSwitch to assign the virtual NIC of the VM to a specific port group. In this way, they don't have to call or email us to
assign the VM to a port group.
I still don't understand why SCVMM does not map the port groups we've created from VMware vCenter server with user that has a self-service role. Is there any other way so that we can map the port group automatically to SCVMM?
    Please advise. Thanks!

  • "Unsupported Cluster Configuration" status for all VM's in SCVMM 2012 R2

I have multiple Hyper-V 2012 R2 clusters that are managed via SCVMM 2012 R2. I want to make all the VM's highly available, but I receive the following errors.
VM status - Unsupported Cluster Configuration
error 13923 - highly available virtual machine is not supported by VMM because its cluster resource group is not configured correctly.
error 13706 - the host network adapter is not associated with any logical networks
I have 2 10Gb NICS teamed on all the Hyper-V Hosts. Then I create virtual switches and virtual NICS in Hyper -V. I then create separate VLANS for each virtual NIC to segment traffic for clustering, live migration, etc.
I found the following article, but it seems to just show how to identify the issue, not resolve it.

    Hi ok8ru12,
    Thanks , it's a good article .
    >>error 13706 - the host network adapter is not associated with any logical networks
According to the error , please check the setting of "Associated logical networks " of cluster nodes :
