Adding Interaction in IBooks Author

The only way I'm aware of to do this is to add an interactive widget which I have done using  Hype, Purple and Motion Composer. All of these apps give me the same result. The widget is placed on the page and when it is activated it opens to a larger area and then displays.
This does not solve my problem, if you loook at the interactive IBook Yellow Submarine you will see EXACTLY what I mean.
Any help here as I have a client that wants an Interactive I Author Book and I need to know how I can accomplish this.
RD

If you notice, the book Yellow Submarine works on both iPhone/touch and iPad....this means it was not done using iBooks Author, which only targets iPad.
Pages from Apple along with calibre, as an example, will create an industry standard version e-pub file. iBooks Authore creates a hybrid e-pub that Apple has created.

  • Adding animation to iBook Author

I hope someone can help me.
I am creating a children's picture book in iBook Author.  I want to add animation which I created in Hype 2.5.1 and converted it into a widget.  I can add the widget OK and the animation works but the background is white so my page layout does not show.
    1.  Is there anyway to make the background transparent?
    2.  Do I have to create the entire page in Hype and import the whole thing into iBooks Author as a widget?
    3.  Is there a way I can add the animation as an animated .gif.
This animation part is new to me and I am having difficulty sorting it out.  I know it can be done because I've purchased some other books to see how other people are handling it and their animation works without the white background.  I just don't know how to do it.
    Please - any suggestions???

Widgets are displayed in their own view so transparency is not possible (to the best of my experiential knowledge). I suspect what you thought was transparency was a screenshot of that page used as the widget's background image. (Painful to update, sure, but it works!) Alternatively, a "page" could be simulated by the HTML widget. A recent title I was reading skinned the widget to look like the book so the widget's simulation felt like it was inline.
Many folks have successfully used Hype to create HTML widgets for iBooks Author titles, so I don't see why you couldn't use Hype for what you need.
Finally, recommended image types are JPEG and PNG. I don't know why GIF wouldn't work, but a simple experiment would tell you whether it would work for you.

  • IBooks Author ( interactive image )

    Hi to everyone,
I have a problem with an interactive image in iBooks Author. i've added the image in .jpg format and all the interactive "buttons" with own interactivity zoom for each one. When I test it on the working area, it works correctly even it's quite slow, but once I preview it on mac book pro or ipad, it doesn't work as shown in the working area. when i click on bottom to see the details, it becomes white. Who can help me?
    Thanks
    Alberto

Have you solved your issue? If not, can you provide us with some screen shots of what it looks like in iBooks author and as preview in iBooks on your mac?

I would like to embed interactive widgets in iBooks using iBookAuthor. The widgets in question started life in Java but GWT has allowed them to be converted to javascript and to run on web pages (for example, http://softoption.us/content/node/437 scroll to the bottom). In theory, iBookAuthor can bring in most html5, and much javascript. The technique is to wrap the html in a folder, with 2 extra files, a plist and a default png and then change the extension of the folder to ‘.wdgt’. This is the technique for making Dashboard widgets for the Mac, and Apple even have the Dashcode software to do it. So what you really do is to make a Dashboard widget, then iBookAuthor can import it.  So far, so good. And some  folk have been doing this, for example http://www.prweb.com/releases/2012/2/prweb9242432.htm http://www.panophoto.org/forums/viewtopic.php?f=64&t=10417&p=158330#p158423 However, if you start with GWT and create a single page with one button and a Hello World, compile it, and get the WAR file (I use Eclipse here)… the Safari browser and others will run it properly (even on an iPad). Then if you wrap it, a proper Dashboard widget is created, which runs properly on a Mac. Then if you go to iBookAuthor and put a custom widget in the Text, then drag it in. It is accepted by the text and shown as being there. However, if you use Preview to look at it on an iPad, it is gone (or was never there in the first place). Anyone any ideas on this? [And iBook Author seems to give no warnings.] The widget is at https://dl.dropbox.com/u/46713473/Test6.wdgt.zip I have bells and whistles that I’d like to get into an iBook!
    Thanks for any insights.

I do have a little to add, which might help someone. Indeed, opening a blank page and dragging the widget straight in seems good in difficult cases. But, actually, I was also able to insert successfully from the Toolbar especially to blank pages. So, it may have been something to do with the columns and stuff like that. Anyway back then the insertion would show in iBooks Author but not in the Preview on the iPad. I moved on to actual Google Web Toolkit output javascript. Basically I had three at hand to try: a Hello World with a button which went straight it, one of moderate complexity, (for example with a built in Lisp interpreter), which also went straight in, and finally a more complex one that initially was rejected by iBook Author. Author complained that there was an unsupported media file (of course, Author does not tell you which one it is, that would be too easy). [Remember, this was a proper working Dashboard widget which could be installed on a Mac]. Among other things I had read remarks about .gif files. When looking through the GWT war directory at the actual javascript etc files, I noticed there were two gifs there one called ‘clear.cache.gif ‘  and a second one called  ‘0F89659FF3F324AE4116F700257E32BD.cache.gif’. (Now, there is obfuscation so the numbers here may be different from case to case.) The clear.cache.gif did not seem to be anything special. But the other one is an animation. It is three little boxes that twinkle (rather like a waiting spinning cursor).  So, I opened that file and saved it to itself (that picks the top frame of the animation and saves only that, leaving you with an unanimated gif). The resulting widget drags and drops into iBooks Author (and seems to work properly at a quick glance). So, if you are having trouble with ‘unsupported media files’ converting animated gifs into unanimated gifs might help in some cases.

I created a book in iBooks Author using the Photo Book template. When I rotate to portrait orientation, the photo or widget disappears and a table of contents appears with only the interactive media showing.

Thanx for the prompt response, KT. I have indeed seen that thread, only just after I posted the question.
I have spent hours on the phone with what I now know is a call center in Texas on this question.
I think Apple could be a little more "hands on" with iBooks Author users, and it should also be pointed out that landscape photos will not display in portrait mode.
In my case, I used gallery widgets to display vertical photos, since they look better in portrait mode.
But instead of simply rotating, the page disappears and a TOC of interactive media appears. The gallery behaves as expected when tapped. This is not what I expected, but since the gallery works, I can live with it.
Right now I have "tickets" telling me to "fix" this "problem or to disable portrait mode.
I don't want to disable portrait mode.
Will Apple accept the books if I tell them this is not an "error?"

  • IBooks Author or InDesign CS6 for interactive eBook?

I've been asked to create some "marketing collateral" (free, not for purchase) for my company that in addition to text would include some vidoes w/ audio. The material HAS to work on the iPad b/c that's how it will be displayed at the tradeshow.
However, if the materials could reach a larger audience than just iPad users, that would be a bonus. I've just read that iBooks now supports ePub3, and I understand that InDeisgn CS6 can export to ePub3?
My questions is whether I should use iBooks Author or use InDesign? I use InDesign for print & PDFs, but never for interactive. I don't want to use the DPS - we have no intent of selling this material. I have no experience with iBooks.
I have such a short window of time to produce this, that I thought it would be best to ask some experienced designers which direction you would go.
    Thanks in advance.

The idpf links to some epub3 samples hosted on google ( http://code.google.com/p/epub-samples/downloads/list ), and there is one that contains embedded audio & video. I opened it on my 1st generation iPad, and it opened & played the video.  It's rather visually uninteresting, however, and I'm not sure if that's b/c of the epub format or the intent of the author.
There are  other examples of epub3 out there if you google it, and they will show how how others have utilized the format ( http://vimeo.com/24954073 ). It's still not really what I'm looking for visually.
I looked into DPS on the Adobe site, and the example of Univeristy of Ohio app was amazing especially considering the lack of developers involved. This probably won't work for my current project, b/c it looks as though you have to upload the file to the Apple store, and I've been told they don't want to do that. Bummer; but I'm keeping it in mind for future marketing purposes.
It looks like iBook Author is going to be the winning platform.

  • How can I insert an interactive musical notation fragment in iBooks Author?

I would like to insert an interactive fragment of musical notation in iBooks Author, just to illustrate a short melody or a few chords.

Keynote cant hyperlink within the same slide to another object. Interactive presentations must use multiple slides.
Create the presentation as described above and use the same background on each slide using the slide master, this will provide the look that you want of staying on the same page.
Create a return button on every slide so you can navigate to a previous slide.

  • IBooks Author and Keynote Interactives

I have many keynote interactives but when I preview my book on the IPad most if not all of the keynote interactives have been duplicated accross several figures.
For example I have Figure 5.1, 5.2 and 5.3. I have associated(both drag and drop and the file chooser) key note presentations Figure 5.1, Figure 5.2 and Figure 5.3 in IBooks Author.
When I go to preview the book, both as a whole as as a section, Figure 5.1 is showing my Figure 5.1, Figure 5.2 is showing Figure 5.1(wrong) and Figure 5.3 is also showing Figure 5.1 (wrong).
I go back into IBooks and everything is associated correctly?
So I have not idea why it is doing this other than my book template is completely screwed up.
    Any ideas?
    Scott L.

Thanks apple support helped me resolve this.
It would seem that IBook Author cannot tell the difference between files that have similar names.
For example it can't tell the different between Interactive 1.1 and Interactive 1.2 the names are too similar.
What the heck, the previous versions of IBook Author were 10 times better than this.

  • Adding a youtube video in iBook Author

I am trying to add a youtube video to my template in iBook Author.  What is the easest way?  Thanks

I don't have a way at the moment to upload. I tried and had a few others try while watching the video and still the same result. When you go to preview the button is present and does launch a blank lightbox without content(youtube video). The youtube video that was drug into the light box displays all the time unless you select the light box trigger and then the light box pops up over the video. I think what is happening is that the video is not inside the container. I have tried several times selecting the container, button as in video and inserting the <iframe embed code but still have the same result.

  • HT4980 Adding Tamil Font to an iBook thats created with iBooks Author ?

I am trying to add Tamil Font ( Used for Indian Regional Language - Tamil ). I Have over 1500 titles on print and would like to digitalize them for iPads.
When I opened iBooks Author, I don't see any Tamil Fonts available. How do I get around this or is there any other steps that I need to take inorder to make this work.
    Thanks in Advance.

Go to system preferences/language & text/input sources and check the box for Show Input Menu in Menu Bar.  Then go to the "flag" menu at the top right of the screen and select Tamil.  Then type.
What you type in iBooks Author is automatically Unicode.    I was referring to the case where you might use some sort of scanning to convert your print titles to digital text.

  • Best workflow practices for iBooks Author re Enhanced Books?

    Hi
I have already published one Enhanced iBook in iTunes (The Wandering Gorillas) about my research in Rwanda.  I am now working on several others which will contain much more interactive media - photos and video.
I have vast amounts of unique photos and video - which would be useful for education purposes. So, 'where fools rush in...' I began to creat a new Enhanced iBook with lots of rich media.
However, I immediately started to have serious problems as the fille sizes grew very large - due to the many images and especially because iBooks Author creates versions etc.  Thanks to solutions provided on another post by Pondini & Linc Davis these problems have now been resolved and I have regained my 'lost' 100 GB - which had been gobbled up into the folder DocumentREvisions and private/var - you can read their solutions here
    https://discussions.apple.com/message/22800295#22800295
Now, I wish to avoid the same problems - and try to get the best possible workflow to use when creating Enhanced iBooks - which contain lots of rich media files such as photos and video.
And so I am asking advice form anyone who has created such iBooks using iBooks author - or who is an expert in the finer workings of this software.
First -  Since Apple restrict the final iBook size to 2 Gb (and recommen smaller) I am considering creating my new iBook via separetly published chapters - so that each will be less than the max 2GB.  Obvioulsy these will have to have some 'stand alone' usefulness!
But, is this a good practice? has anyone done this? Is there any way for the separate chapters to be later combined - by the user - in order to have a complete, coherent book?
Second, re image file sizes.  For best quality on their new Retina Display iPads Apple suggest images of (No larger than ) 5000 x 5000.  I used this - and it produced image file sizes of 20 -30 MB.  I did some other trials - using images of 1024 x 1024 max - and on my iPad 2 (non Retina) my failing eyes could not see any difference?  Their file size was reduced to 2- 300 KB
Would the difference be  obvious on a Retina Display though?  Should we use the largest possible resolution (and file size) - but this has serious implications for the eventual overall iBook file size.
    What is the best compromise?
Third,   I have an iMac with an i7 250 Gb Flash drive and a separate 1TB hard drive.  All my 'media assets' are on the 1TB hard drive. The still images are exported from my various Aperture libraries - as jpegs of the size mentioned above (and into a newly created folder) .  Same with video - to Apple's recommendations for video replay on iPads.
So far I have kept and used the actual iBook Author file - for the new book - on the desktop of my 250GB i7 Flash Drive.
But, as I reported in the other post, this soon caused me huge problems as my disk space was rapidly 'eaten up' by duplicate versions etc.
I am now considering using a separate, 1Tb Firewire External drive for the actual iBook Author file (with backup copies onto another 1TB drive) I am certain this will be slower than using my internal flash drive - but is this 'good practice?'  Can it avoid the problems of all 'lost' storage space which caused me such hassles when using my flash drive?  Or, will this be minimised if I create separate iBooks from separate chapters?
And, delete uneccessary versions of course!
I do feel that this is an emerging issue which many will face - as we incorporate more and more rich media into our iBooks.
Any help or suggestions are gratefull received!

Thunderstorm played havoc with box from my ISP - and I am ruuning on a reserve and internet access flaky!
but, here goes with one reply.  Will have to wait later re tests for your other suggestions when weather calmed down
Re   'as Apple suggessted'   I should have said - no larger than 5000 x 5000 pixels (the 3240 was my vertical proportional dimension from choosing 5000 horizintal dimension)
this is from Ibooks Author help
Add and edit photos and other images
You can add a photo or other image (in a supported file type) to a page in your book by dragging the photo from theMedia Browser, the Finder, or another application.
After adding a photo to your book and positioning it on the page, you can use the tools in iBooks Author to mask (crop) the photo; change its brightness, contrast, and other image qualities; or erase its background.
Important:  When you export your book for distribution outside the iBookstore, images are automatically scaled to a width of 2048 pixels, which is optimized for iPad with Retina display. Readers can view these images on other iPad models, but the viewing experience might be slower. You can improve the viewing experience on iPad models without Retina display by using images no wider than 1024 pixels.
    ShowMask (crop) a photo
ShowChange a photo’s brightness, contrast, and other settings
ShowRemove the background or unwanted elements from a photo
Important:  Images can’t be larger than 25 megapixels (5000 x 5000 pixels) or 50 MB.

  • Can't advance Keynote Widget on iBooks Author

Using Keynote 9 (version 5.1.1) and OS X Lion (10.7.2) and experiencing problems with Keynote Widget for iBooks Author.
The drag-and-drop feature works fine; I see the first slide - but the arrow button appears to be grayed out. Can't advance through any of my (pretty basic) transitions.
I don't have an iPad, so I can't see if the iBooks file works on that device, but I figured that the Keynote Widget should show some functionality in iBooks Author since both an Interactive Image Widget and QuickTime movie I added elsewhere appears to work. [That image clicks just fine in iBooks Author.]
Also, when I click "Show transport controls" in the inspector, I see arrows and 1/7 (number of slides) - but clicking still doesn't seem to work.
Do I need to be using an iPad to see this particular functionality? Or is this some sort of silly user-error? (Or both?)
    Any hints are much appreciated.

    Thanks for your prompt reply.
Here is the support page I found to be less than "clear":
iBooks Author: About the Keynote widget (note the first bullet-point: "Adding a presentation to a Keynote widget"): http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5067
I subsequently found the other support doc that is more clear - affirming the correctness of your answer.
Even so, I encourage you to reconsider the use of the word "clearly," which comes across as needlessly condescending.
