Address Book index

The address book in the cloud has an index on the right side of the page but the index doesn't show up on the address book application on my imac?  Any ideas about a fix would be appreciated.  Using Lion.  Thanks.

That index hasn't made it to the Mac software yet.  Maybe some future release..

  • Spotlight Address Book Indexing Issue

Hi community - anyone have any idea when I use Spotlight to search contacts that some names appear 2, 3, 4 times or more? I know what is happening actually, Spotlight is indexing contacts that are attached in emails I have sent out. For example, when I search my name in Address Book it appears like 5 times because I have included my vCard in an email of the past.
I guess my question is - is there a setting to turn off Spotlight from finding contacts within a Mail attachment? This is so messy… and annoys the crap out of me.
I did figure out a way - System Preferences -> Spotlight -> Privacy -> Add the Mail folder from in Library (but then I can't search emails in Mail app or Spotlight) so, not really a fix.
    Any thoughts?
    Thanks.

I have the same problem.  It is a real nuisance, because often the top hit is a contact in email, not the address book contact.  If you then select that top hit, the address book will open and try to import the contact.  I.e., it will not show you the contact in address book but instead take you down a bad path, possibly encouraging you to update a contact with old information.
In addition, the desired contact is often not the first in the list of contacts that appear below the top hit.  I have set spotlight preferences to show contacts before email, but this does not affect the ordering.
I do not want to turn off all searching of email attachments, though I'd be willing to consider it just to make this problem go away.  Better would be to disable indexing of contacts in email.  Best would be to always give precedence (top hit, ordering in spotlight list) to the address book version of the contact.

  • Wrong name in email address and damaged index in address book

I have experienced this problem for months now. I have a Mac Pro at the office and MacBook Pro at home. The address book is synced with .mac. At random I will receive emails and the mail program will attach the wrong name with the address ( John doe [email protected] will be displayed as mary smith [email protected] ) this also happens in mail I have sent and copied myself on. The incorrect name is usually one that exist in my address book. The second part of the problem which may be related is the index for both address books will get damaged. Every few days I have to discard the address book index file ( AddressBook-v22.abcddb ) which fixes the index issue for a few days. The computers nor the applications ever crash. I wonder if the .mac syncing could be key to both computers having index issues. Rebuilding the address index does not fix the wrong name issue. Both computers are 10.5.2. I feel there is some deeper corruption issue that rebuilding that one index file does not correct. I have also rebuilt all the mail boxes.

SOLUTION: my ultimate solution to the address book confusing contact info in ichat, mail, etc. was to go to ~/Library/Application Support/AddressBook/ and delete the AddressBook-v22.abcddb file. back up your contacts first!!! but after you delete and relaunch, Address Book will rebuild using the info from the Metadata folder. worked like a charm.

  • Contacts and Mac OS Address Book won't sync anymore

I have an iPod touch, 2nd generation, with iOS 4.2.1, which has worked perfectly well for years.
Since I got an iPad 2 with iOS 5.0.1, and iTunes 10.5.1, and set up iCloud, and synced the iPad to my Mac, now my iPod touch will no longer sync any address book entries between iOS Contacts and Mac OS X 10.7.2 Lion's Address Book.
I've tried restoring the iPod touch to its factory-fresh setting and syncing with the Mac. I've tried rebuilding the Mac OS Address Book index, and repairing permissions on Mac OS X. Nothing seems to help.
Another clue is that the iPod touch Contacts stopped syncing at 512 Contact entries, while the Mac's Address Book had 521 entries. I think 512 is a suspicious number; is it an upper limit on entries that sync with iTunes and Address Book?
    Any help would be appreciated.

The messaget is correct, that is, your iCloud calendar will no longer be on your Mac as long as you are signed out of iCloud.  Your calendars will still be on you iPhone and on iCloud.  After syncing your contacts to your iTouch, you then sign back into iCloud on your Mac and everything will be back as it was before you signed out.  I did it on my Mac and have all my calendars and contacts as well as my wife's iTouch has all calendars and contacts.
You seem to be concerned about losing data, which is a valid concern.  Do you back up your Mac using Time Machine?  It is a great resource installed on the Mac to assure that if you commit any errors that resutls in the loss of data, then you can easlily restore it via Time Machine.  If you have not been backing up your Mac then consider doing it.  The Apple Store sales personnel recommended to me the LaCie Storage devices since they easily interconnect with the Mac.  A Google search will find them at competitive prices as compard to what Apple charges.  I am so paranoid about losing data that I have three separate 1TB LaCie drives backing up my Mac.  I will be installing a forth as a network backup drive for my wife's Mac and my MacBook Air.

  • Indexing problem in address book

When I access address book from .Mac Mail
the list of names in the address book is not indexed
although in .Mac Mail preferences I have the
entries in address book to be displayed as:
    Default sort order: first name
Display order : first name and surname.
Anyone has encountered this problem? Any
    help appreciated. Thank you.

    Hi AA, try this:
Navigate to ~(yourHome)/Library/Preferences/com.apple.AddressBook.plist and delete that file. Then relaunch AddressBook.

  • When I compose an E-mail my address book will not open when I click on TO or CC, but it does work on other computers and also if I use explorer.

My address book will not show when I click on the TO or CC button, a mozilla page does open but there is no content. My E-mail accounts work fine on other computers. It also works fine on this computer if I use Explorer instead.

    Hello,
I been trying change several prefixes on my Address Book with no luck.
I tried exporting them as Bussines Cards and editing them with Text Edit and I was unsuccesful. Due that the find tool wont "find" what I am looking for.
At the end of the day is only replacing the following in a bunch of contacts:

Hello, I think you'll have to Export them & use another Application...
How to Export Your Mac OS X Mail Address Book Contacts to a CSV File...
Export Your Mac OS X Mail Address Book Contacts to a CSV File
To save your contacts from the Mac OS X Address Book to a CSV (comma-separated values) file, which lets you import the data to many other address books:
    Download and install AB2CSV.
    Open AB2CSV.
Select Mode | CSV from the menu.To configure which fields will be exported, you can select AB2CSV | Preferences… from the menu and go to the CSV tab.
Now select File | Export from the menu.
    Go to your Documents folder.
    Click Choose.
The exported address book contacts are saved to a file called "everyone.csv" in your Documents folder.

    Might look into NeoOffice...

  • How do I automatically or manually add incoming e-mail addresses to my address book?

How do I automatically or manually add incoming e-mail addresses to my address book?

Automatically? Really?? All addresses of all senders just sucked into the address book, spammers, advertisers and all?
Where an address appears in the panel above the message text, there is a star alongside it. Click this star to add the address to your Address Book. Once you have done that, you can click the star again to edit the address book entry.
Note that if the star is empty/grey (silver?) the contact is unknown. If the star is filled/yellow (gold?), the Contact is already in your address book. (This is very like the way bookmarks are managed in Firefox.)
If you really want all senders' addresses entered indiscriminately into your address book, this add-on may be of interest.

  • Address Book Issues

I just this week finally upgraded from 10.4.11 Tiger to the latest Snow Leopard through the Mac Box Set. I had some minor issues with a few things, but my biggest problems were with my contacts in Address Book.
After the installation, I looked at my contacts in Snow Leopard and only 40 of 225 had migrated over to the new system! Fortunately, I had, of course, backed up my main drive as it existed under Tiger just prior to the system upgrade, so I restarted with drive 2, opened Address Book, exported my contacts file to drive 1, restarted again with drive 1, and imported the exported vCards file into Address Book in Snow Leopard. This seemed to work well enough, as all of my 225 contacts were back.
But then I decided I didn't like the picture I had attached to one of my contacts and decided to replace it with a newer one. I tried every approach I could think of but I could NOT get rid of the old picture. I deleted the old one several different ways and chose the new picture to replace it and then save the entry, but no matter what I did, if I went to another contact and back to this one, or stayed on this contact, closed Address Book and reopened it, every time I returned to the contact with the picture the old one was back. Argghhh! One of the things I thought was interesting is that every time I clicked to choose a new picture, the "new" one was there and I could "set" it, but it would not stay set when the contact was reopened. Finally, I had to resort to deleting that card and re-entering the information from scratch with the new picture, and that worked.
I suppose I'll never know why only 40 of 225 contacts migrated over when I went directly from Tiger to Snow Leopard. Some would probably say that's what I get for waiting, and maybe they're right, but does anyone know whether imported vCards are typically less editable than entries that are entered by hand?

Thanks for responding Herbert. I have not tried that. I'll be on-site on Thursday and give it a try.

  • Add Attendees (name AND phone no.) from Address Book to iCal for iPhone use

Hello scripting gurus and newbs alike.
I've looked through the forums, but can't find a COMPLETE solution to what I believe should be a fairly straightforward problem. I'll start by asking the question as concisely as I can, then bring in more information about what I have tried, and learned, so far. I'll also outline my broad (mini) project aims at the end, in case anyone is interested.
    * Q: How can I add attendees, from my Address Book, to an iCal event, so that **ALL** the attendee details are included?
Note: It is VITAL to me that attendees' phone number(s) are available through iCal, not just {display name, email, participation status}. This is because I want MobileMe to synch the event with my iPhone, so I can call attendees directly from iCal. (or at least have iCal open the attendee's Contacts record so I can call from there!)
WHY DO I THINK IT SHOULD BE POSSIBLE?
Manually, I can simply dbl-click on the event, click into the attendees field, start typing the attendee name, and hit enter. When I do this, it works. MobileMe synchs it to the iPhone, I open iCal, select the event, tap the attendee, and I'm calling.
    WHAT I'VE TRIED USING APPLESCRIPT
When I try the following script, I've only managed to set Sheila's name/email/participation status. I can retrieve her phone number from Address Book using the above approach, but unsure how to make it stick in iCal * such that I am able to use it to call directly from iCal on the iPhone *
    ++++++++++++++++++++++
    tell application "Address Book"
set anAttendee to name of (first person whose name contains "Sheila")
    end tell
    tell application "iCal"
set newEvent to make new event at end with properties ¬
    {summary:"Meeting Info.", location:"ZIP", description:"More yak", start date:SD, end date:SD + 120 * minutes}
    make new attendee at end of attendees of newEvent with properties {display name:anAttendee}
    end tell
    ++++++++++++++++++++++
WHERE I'VE LOOKED FOR SIMILAR EXAMPLES
Thanks to Rob (et al) for providing script examples used to create the above, see here: http://macscripter.net/viewtopic.php?id=5692
I've also looked at the following article, which makes me think I somehow need to use the PERSON ID in the event attendee list. Unfortunately, I have only managed to retrieve the ID, but had no joy trying to set it.
    http://www.mactech.com/articles/mactech … index.html
    THE PROJECT
I'm a surveyor, and using dialog(s) to enter relevant info., I'm looking to streamline my preparation for surveys when I make each new appointment.
My mini-project presently enables me to print survey forms (based on a Pages template) with details relating to the specific property (address/contact name&no./appointment date&time etc.) It also uses the appointment date&time to create the appropriate event in iCal.
I'm also confident I can add the contact details, such as agent/owner name(s) and phone number(s) in Address Book.
IF I COULD ONLY ADD THESE AS ATTENDEE(S), AS IF ADDED MANUALLY, I WOULD ALSO BE ABLE TO PHONE THE PROPERTY OWNERS WITH A COURTEOUS REMINDER WHEN I'M ON THE WAY!!
Can anyone help me achieve this?
    Here's hoping.
    Phil (wiimixer)

    Phil
Referencing the attendee in iCal will only directly record the properties you mention - because that's how it's designed to work and there's no way around the restriction unless iCal is changed.
You could set the phone number elsewhere in the iCal event - e.g. notes, location, ... - and that would probably allow you to call from iCal (I don't have an iPhone so I can't be sure), but I am not sure I see the advantage over using the link to iPhone's Address Book which is set up by adding an attendee to the event. This might be because I am being dense, so if this is the case please elaborate.
    EDIT:
I have read your original post in more detail since I wrote the above. It seems to me that you are saying that when you add the person to the iCal event via AppleScript that you do not get the link to the iPhone's Address Book when you sync via MobileMe. You imply, however, that it does work when you type the name manually. Are these both correct statements?

  • Address Book fails to search

OK, I have reviewed other threads on Address Book problems and the solutions there have not helped. Here is the situation, and I can reproduce the results.
I am running OS X 10.7.2 on a MacBook and all was well. My address book has 935 contacts in it and yesterday it worked fine when I needed it. It is synced with iCloud. There have been no known changes in the environment in any recent weeks or days. Yesterday I installed FileMaker Pro - this has been the only change on this Mac in the past week or more.
Now when I try to use the search bar in the address book, the search returns nothing and the list view "freezes" on to one contact. The contact is highlighted but I am unable to select any other contact. I can use the up and down arrow to scroll the list, but only the one contact appears on the right pane.
If I delete the temp file in the Library files, then restart, some functionality might be restores - that is, i can scroll through the list, see different cards, etc. However, as soon as I use the search function, the "freeze" returns. Help!

The solutions above did NOT work for me, but I have a solution that did. The search field did not respond to typed letters that should narrow the contact list (i.e., typing "west" should narrow the entries to ones having "west" in them). Disabling iCloud syncing actually caused System Prefs to hang. Archiving, deleting all contacts, quitting AB, and then deleting the AddressBook-v22.abcddb files, did NOT solve the problem Interestingly, after doing the foregoing steps, I relaunched AB and typed a test contact, and confirmed that the search function worked. But after reimporting the archive, the same old issue recurred.
These steps fixed it: In my case this was not an iCloud problem, and I did not disable synching. Instead of archiving the AB, (1) I exported all the contacts (3,600) as a vCard, (2) deleted all the contacts, (3) quit AB, (4) deleted all three AddressBook-v22.abcddb files (there are several under subfolders in the Application Support>Address Book files), (5) logged out and back in again, and (6) imported the vCard with all my entries.
I think the importing of the vCards (as opposed to bringing back in the Archive, triggered re-indexing of the database. It is possible, however, that the additional step of loggin out and back in made a difference, as the AB database is contained in the user's home folder, and quitting and logging back on can clean up files in the user's folder. Because I did not disable iCloud syching, deleting all the contacts did delete them from the cloud and my devices. But they returned with proper synching after I imported the vCard back in.
Although the individual vCards do seem to have the info on which groups they belong to, this process did depopulate all my groups. So, if you have groups, and you want to keep them, you might try all the above steps but with an archive, rather than a vCard.

  • Address book and Sim Card

Is there a way to completely delete all contacts from my sim card?  Also, how can I add my phone numbers from my address book to the sim card all at once instead of one by one?

    Hi,
SIM Card Contacts can only be deleetd one by one.
Address book entries cannot be copied to the SIM Card except by manually adding them.
The SIM Card has 99 entries MAX, with space for a single 10 digit number and (approx) 10 character name.
The blackberry has Home, Work, Mobile, fax numbers, email addresses, names, pictures, addresses and HEAPS of other details
There simply isnt the space to copy the data across and rather than allow you to copy  name and mobile only (and Loose all the other details) it doesnt allow you to do anything like that.
You KNOW that if they gave people the option they would blame RIM saying :"I thought it would copy EVERYTHING including the pictures to the SIM Card and still allow me to use it in another phone, etc, blah, blah, blah....."

i get an ioexception, must catch or throw, i tried to add catch but it says i must have try, so i added try and it says i cant have catch without try! what am I doing wrong??
am i doing it right also? should this be in my options? i.e if i press save button?
also why isn't my next and previous buttons working??
and one more thing, is there an easier way to show the contents of my file to the jtextfields? (import contacts class)
    thanks

  • Synching Blackberry and Address Book which  just works: impossible dream?

I've got a Blackberry 8200g which synchs well with my office Lotus Notes setup. I'd like to be able to synch the office contacts book (but not email) with my home Mac's Address Book, with synching of Calendar a bonus, but not crucial.
PocketMac Synchmanager kept bringing over only some information, and only in one direction (i.e. not onto the work computer), and seemed to forget some of the information it had brought over previously.
Missing Synch seems to require me to turn off wireless synchronisation every time I want to synch the mac with the blackberry.
Just wondered if it was feasible to find a piece of software that just works - these shouldn't be complex databases to try and mesh - without tweaks etc and without costing the earth.
Any ideas from wiser folks who've been down this road already?

Not sure if this will help with your sync issues or not, but take a look at the link below.

  • Address Book Exporting ... the Case of the Missing Spouse ... ?

… and missing children and missing birthdays, too.
I have had problems customizing address labels, which I discussed in detail in a separate message, entitled Wonky Address Labels. In fact, I gave up on using Apple Address Book and decided to export the database, put it in Excel, and do some column merging to get a one-time solution to my label-printing problem for my Christmas cards.
Yeah, sure I would … when Address Book will not export in anything other than an arcane address book file format.
So it was back to this forum, to review exporting suggestions. Two seemed to be offered and I tried ‘em both; first, Address Book Exporter at:
    gwenhiver.net/applications/addressbookexporter/index.php
and second, some special mail scripts at:
    http://homepage.mac.com/aamann/Mail_Scripts.html
These were both fun to use and worked pretty well, producing tab-delimited text files. But neither will do a complete export of the database; they won’t export spouse names, anniversary dates, children’s names or spouse/children’s birthdays ( which I had put in an ‘Other Date’ field ) … nor, BTW, will they export custom fields.
Well, if I can’t print custom labels with Apple Address Book and can’t export the full database, I guess hand-written Christmas card envelopes have a certain panache.
Or, I suppose I might use my 10-year old Windows software that I run on Virtual PC.
It would be nice if Apple would fix this Address Book exporting problem. Frankly, I don’t like the idea of having data in a database that I cannot export as a simple text file. In fact, if I had known I could not get my data OUT, I would not have put it IN to start with.
Any suggestions for exporting ALL the fields of the Apple Address Book database would be welcome.
    DICK

value = value;Oh, so you have one of those new compilers that reads your mind and knows which value is which in that statement, huh?
    Lucky.
The rest of us are stuck doing this.value = value;so that the compiler can distinguish the member variable from the method parameter.
