  • Font licensing and EULA: Adobe Type Basics OpenType Edition

    Hi all,
I'm not necesarilly working with graphic design daily. However, I may have to replicate a design for a publication that uses Adobe Garamond Pro, which is why I got interested in Adobe - Fonts : Adobe Type Basics OpenType Edition.
However, before I shell out the cash, I'd like to ask a few questions about related EULA's and font licensing issues - as the last thing I want to do is buy something, and then end up sued/financially destroyed/imprisoned anyways. (which is why I prefer with open fonts & software - at least no worries about prison, in case of misunderstanding the legalese)
    So, here are the questions:
I am a Linux user, and I primarily intent to use the fonts with xelatex. On the download page, there are two options: "Win" and "Mac". Which one should I choose? Related question: Adobe Forums: Install a Mac font on a PC:Windows can use OpenType, Windows Type1 and Windows TrueType fonts. Windows cannot directly read Mac TrueType or Mac Type1 fonts.
Macintosh can use OpenType, Mac Type1, Mac TrueType, and Win TrueType. Adobe products can read some Windows Type 1 fonts if installed in the correct folder.
Versions - possibly unrelated, but I've found this old comment from 2003 for 'Adobe Type Basics 5.0 Mlp (CD-ROM)':Unfortunately, this product includes fonts in the older PostScript "Type 1" font format instead of the newer OpenType format. Adobe sells an OpenType edition of Adobe Type Basics, but this is a download-only product. I wish Adobe would sell the OpenType Edition on CD.... so just to make sure: I would definitely download the OpenType if I buy from the above  Adobe - Fonts : Adobe Type Basics OpenType Edition link, right?
Re-download - the Adobe Type Basics page doesn't mention the file format of the download, nor its size. With bought fonts, I'd consider installing whatever I need for as long as project lasts, then deleting everything from my computer, since I don't like proprietary stuff sitting on it. Thus, I'd be interested in re-donwloading the Adobe Type Basics package. So is this package a zip file or similar, if so - how big is it? Can I download the file multiple times after purchase? Is the number of times I can redownload limited?
I may have to do (in a role of page layouter for an academic institution) a document for a relatively big academic publisher (Springer); and I have little idea about how font licensing works there. Let's say I prepare a PDF which uses Adobe Garamond Pro, and embeds that font. Is it legal for me to just send that document to the publisher for printing, if I had purchased the Basics OpenType edition? I'm worried because I found in Adobe Forums: Install a Mac font on a PC:As I understand it, print service providers are required by the font EULA to own the font even though the customer provides it.
I suggest you ask your customer to purchase the modern OpenType versions of the fonts. ... but then, Springer are "publishers", not "printers"? How worried should I be about this? Should I ask for confirmation in writing from them, that they own the particular embedded font? Then again, since in this case I'd be working for an academic institution as page layouter, should the academic institution also buy the font? If the academic institution already owns the font, am I legally obliged to own it as a page layouter (even if I'd use that font on the institutions computers with licensed fonts on them)? I'm pretty sure I'd be legally obliged to own it if I intend to prepare the layout on my own computer, is that correct?
The download page mentions for "End User License": 5 computers. Say I install one Adobe Garamond Pro on one computer, use it there for the duration of a project, and then delete it from the computer. Is this computer then still counted towards the number of seats?
Occasionally, I have my personal notes and such typeset in Latex, and here I send them to a printer (as in, "print service provider") to print 2-3 copies in softcover for personal use. As far as I understand it, this does not represent a "published" book (and so there isn't a "publisher" institution as in the Springer example above). So, in this case, again the same situation: let's say I prepare a PDF which uses Adobe Garamond Pro, and embeds that font. Is it legal for me to just send that document to the print house for printing, if I had purchased the Basics OpenType edition? How worried should I be about this?

Well, I believe this is all I have for asking (for now) - thanks in advance for any answers!

If you want Adobe Type Basics OpenType edition, then the fonts support multiple platforms.  OpenType fonts work on Mac, Win and Linux systems.

Yes, the Adobe Type Basics Open Type Edition would provide you with OpenType versions of the fonts.  Sorry that we don’t offer all the different fonts, font families and variations on CD-ROM, but it would be cost-prohibitive to make all those versions, and font software is relatively small compared to application software.  That said, Our font EULA (End User License Agreement) which can be found at: http://www.adobe.com/type/browser/legal/pdfs/wf_EULA071111/EULA5seat_USEnglish07.11.11.htm l states: “2.5 Backup Copy. You may make a reasonable number of backup copies of the Software, provided your backup copies are not installed or used for other than archival purposes.” So you can make your own CD-ROM.
Re-download - the Adobe Type Basics page doesn't mention the file format of the download, nor its size. The file format is OpenType (CFF).  I would recommend making a backup copy of these fonts if you don’t want to keep them on your system.  Our Electronic Software Download service is not meant to be used for storage.

Wow!  Lots of questions here.  First of all, publishers publish.  Printing is just one form of publishing.  Embedding information for Adobe fonts can be found at the following:
    http://www.adobe.com/type/browser/legal/additional_licenses.html
    http://www.adobe.com/type/browser/info/embedding.html
If you send a file to a print service provider and send a copy of the font along as well, then the printer needs to own a valid copy themselves.  If you send the print service provider a PDF version of the file, then you can embed the font in the PDF (but you would not send the a raw version of the font).  In this case, the printer doesn’t need the font, because it is embedded in the document.
The download page mentions for "End User License": 5 computers. Say I install one Adobe Garamond Pro on one computer, use it there for the duration of a project, and then delete it from the computer. Is this computer then still counted towards the number of seats?
If you buy a license for Adobe Garamond Pro, you have up to 5 seats.  So, it can be installed on a maximum of five computers at your company.  It is that simple to be in compliance.  If you were to obtain Adobe Garamond  Pro by purchasing Adobe Type Basics OpenType Edition, then you can install the entire set on up to five computers at your company.  You are licensing the set, and the fonts cannot be split up and used across multiple users at your company.
Yes.  It is legal to send the document to a print service provider with the font embedded in PDF.  You are printing a document, and your interpretation of what it means to “publish” or be a “publisher” is not relevant.  The words don’t even appear in our EULA.

I can see the DIN font in my Dropbox but it is showing up like this:-  ._DIN-bold, no file file extension. what am I doing wrong? is it Mac?

    (1)    Adobe Type Manager (ATM) is not compatible with any version of Windows beyond Windows XP (32-bit, only). Attempting to install ATM on any newer version of Windows may actually disable Window's capability of rendering Type 1 and OpenType CFF fonts, requiring a reinstallation of Windows.
    (2)    There is no need to use ATM to install any fonts under Windows.
    (3)    The file name ._DIN-bold is indicative of a MacOS font. These fonts cannot be installed on Windows systems.

  • Adobe Type Manager problem with Windows 7 and DIN font file extension not showing

I have Windows 7 and for some reason I cannot install Adobe Type Manager onto my Computer.
I need ATM to install the DIN font but am having no luck what so ever.
I can see the DIN font in my Dropbox but it is showing up like this:-  ._DIN-bold, no file file extension. what am I doing wrong? is it Mac?

Adobe Type Manager absolutely cannot be installed on Windows 7. In fact, even attempting to install it may corrupt your operating system installation and its ability to properly render Type 1 and OpenType CFF fonts. The last version of Windows for which ATM was at all compatible was Windows XP, 32-bit only!
Adobe Type Manager is not at all necessary to install fonts, even Type 1 fonts, on Windows 7 systems. Right click on the font file for TrueType of OpenType CFF fonts or the .PFM file for Type 1 fonts and select the Install option.
The font file you are trying to install is for MacOS. It cannot be installed on Windows.

    Hello ozne,
as a first step please have a look at these "General infos about the Adobe Account"
    https://www.adobe.com/account.html and http://helpx.adobe.com/x-productkb/global/find-serial-number.html.
Did you purchase your product from these firms like Amazon? If yes, this is not a serial number, only a code with which you can request a serial number from Adobe. Please have a look at http://helpx.adobe.com/x-productkb/global/find-serial-number.html. (Start here: How did you purchase your product?)
The following part, so I just see at least, ceased to exist on my Adobe website, everything takes place in the link from above. I leave it as an info yet, it might still fit for you. For this purpose, please click your way through to your Adobe Store and find the button "Get Serial Number". Fill in the form and after a while you will get the real serial number.
    Good luck!

    Hi there,
It sounds like there may be an issue with the quality of the PDF. Not all PDFs are created equal, and especially those created from scanned documents can be problematic if the scan quality isn't the best. Is there a dark background on the PDF, or stray marks or smudges?
You can try converting with OCR disabled at outlined in this document: How to disable Optical Character Recognition (O... | Adobe Community. But, while that's a good test to find out where the problem lies, you'll end up with a Word document that isn't editable, so it's not an optimal solution.
Please let us know how it goes.

  • 2 questions on Adobe X (and 1 more on the forums)

Hi can someone who's tinkered with Acrobat X please answer the following:
    1. How easy is it to build a file from pages of existing files? At the moment you can either extract the various pages or dragging between 2 open windows. Neither is very convenient if you have lots of pages in different files.
    2. Is there an easy way to create a pdf file, not a portfolio, from a group of emails?
(And on the forums, does Adobe maintain 2 forum sites, forums.adobe.com and acrobatusers.com? If so, what is the difference between the 2?)
    Many thanks

Thank you. I am a lawyer and Acrobat is indispensable to me when compiling exhibits to witness statements or court bundles. But where I always struggle is when trying to get individual pages from disparate files and then compiling them into a single document.
I am aware of the ability to drag and drop but it is inconvenient as you must arrange both files on screen so it only really works for the odd page. As to the Extract that is useful but it requires extracting, saving, inserting and, to avoid a build up of redundant files, deleting the extract. There is also a problem that if you are working with many pages in different places of a large document you must hold down the control button and click to select. One wrong click and you must start all over again. Surprisingly, copy/cut and paste of pages does not work between files. Your other suggestion of selecting pages in the preview screen of combine files window is also not too convenient as it is a very small screen and it can't be expanded.
My idea which I hope will be implemented one day is to create a holding tray or the ability to tag pages as you move along one or more files. When all the pages have been tagged the 'tray' is then converted into a single file.

  • Some mp3 downloads are coming up as adobe files and wont let me change file type

I am trying to download mp3 files or music files and they are coming up as adobe files when the window pops up and it has no option to change the file type and i have clicked the other options and they dont change anything either (e.g. open, save etc) If you then go ahead and try to download it has finished withina few seconds and you have no music file at the end of it.

.EXE files are not very easy to open on Macs with Mac OS X 10.4.3 or earlier. They typically require an emulation program to run Windows.
    See my FAQ*:
    http://www.macmaps.com/macosxnative.html#WINTEL
Newer Macs are more capable of running Windows, and can do so natively. You can attempt to find a 10.3.9 compatible alternative compatible application as well. Audio and video files don't play very well on emulation, but work fine in Windows native compatible Macs.

  • When using FF 5.0, rollover type ads on Facebook game Lexulous pages are 'enlarged' and block 1/3 of the game board. Using up to date versions of Win 7 Home Premium, Adobe Flash and ActiveX

When using FF 5.0, rollover type ads (i.e. ads for XBOX) on Facebook game Lexulous pages are 'enlarged' and block 1/3 of the game board. Using up to date versions of Win 7 Home Premium, Adobe Flash and ActiveX on an HP Pavillion dv7 laptop. Does NOT happen at all in MS IE 8, but occurs every time in FF 5.0.
Also, Google 'translate this page' links do not work in FF 5.0, but works in MS IE 8. All I get in FF is a blank page, time after time.

    Hi,
I am using a Nvidia 4200M adapter in my Laptop, Driver 266.96, Direct X 11
In my desktop I am using an ATI XFX 6950, latest revision drivers (I am not at home right now so I cant get that info).
The issue I did describe above, but it was a long explanation.
In some flash games the game files load initially and get as far as the "click to start" button. Then the flash area usually goes either all white or all black (usually depending on the falsh game default background color) and then it stays that color. Cant see anything after hitting start (usually most games have an intro video or animation before the game starts, but I cant see any of it.
For the very few games that do start, the flash game or application does not seem to work correctly in that when the rare game starts, it wont save any game files or save files to the pc and so if I exit the game (navigate away to another page or close browser) and then later come back, even though I click the option to save games (and ensure that the flash application slider shows it can save files and lots of space) it does not save and I have to start from the beginning all the time.
    More explanation I gave above.

  • Adobe website and forums navigation

    Hello!
I'm not new in here, but Adobe changes the whole website and navigation from time to time and it's not getting better, unfortunately.
Perhaps someone of the admins can clarify this:
    1) If I go to adobe.com, the page is in english. That's normal. If I log in and my native language is german and Adobe knows that I'm from Germany, then it would actually make sense to switch to german after login. But it does not.
    2) If I log in and select a different language (german in this case), then the website appears in german. But if I go to the forums, it's english again. This is paradox.
    3) If I'm logged in to Adobe, then I'm not automatically logged in to the forums. This is paradox too. At least to me.
    4) If I'm in the forums I need to click "Login/Register" and it asks me for a screen name. I know a lot of english terms, but "screen name" does not makes sense since the rest of the world would call it "nickname". It also does not ask for a password, nor can't I register. I can just set the screen name. Well...
    5) If I set the screen name to something like "Nobody", while my login name at Adobe is my real name, then the top line suddenly says "Welcome Nobody". If I then click on "Your account", it loads the page again and then it shows my real name again. Confusing.
    6) If I'm logged in and chose german as language and then select forums, I won't be taken to the international german forums. This is paradox.
    7) If I go to "Forums" and then below to "International forums -> German", then the page appears in german and says "Foren", which is german for "Forums". But there are no forums, it is only one forum. But for what? For all Adobe products? Confusing.
    8) If I'm on that page from 7) then it's half english, half german.
This is what I could see by just browsing Adobe's pages for a few minutes. I actually don't want to know what will happen if I browse some more...

    Hello Kanguyen,
Early in the morning yesterday, when I still had several hours left before logout, I wrote a long answer to your message, although I didn’t really have the time for it. Unfortunately, when I tried to post it, I found that I had been logged out, and I was absolutely unable to relog for the rest of the day, apparently because the Adobe site (adobe.com) was down. Compared with this, the announced Server Maintenance notice seemed like a bad joke. In any case, I will have to try to remember all that I wrote and was lost.
I must have begun by thanking you for your long and detailed reply to my previous message. With the increasingly deteriorated atmosphere around here, one tends to forget how very nice it is to interact with someone willing to listen to arguments, and to try to understand what one says without resorting to disqualifications. Which unfortunately seem to be replacing arguments in this forum. However, let’s get back to our conversation.
No, I have never asked for more participation of (Spanish speaking) Adobe employees in the forums in Spanish. I come from the traditional Adobe (pre Macromedia fusion) forums, where we were constantly reminded that no Adobe personnel participated officially or regularly in the forums, and that the forums were not a way of addressing Adobe. Therefore, I couldn’t have asked for the forums in Spanish what the original (US English) forums did not have.
What I did ask for, and for several years, was the appointment of at least one Spanish-speaking moderator in those forums, and for more attention from Adobe Spain to them. Sadly, no moderator was ever appointed in those forums, and the now single forum in Spanish still hasn’t got one. On the other hand, a surprising side effect of the new forums format is that the forum in Spanish is now listed in the Adobe Spain site, as in all the other localized forums, under the International Forums label. And I say surprising because for years there was no mention of the forums in Spanish in the Adobe Spain site.
I have just checked, and although the language problem is solved for users who change it checking the Remember... option, it is still there for newcomers seeking help for the first time. I would think that, typically, such a Spanish speaking person in trouble would naturally look for help in www.adobe.com or in www.adobe.com/es. In the first case, s/he would get a page fully in English, with no provision for changing to another language. In the second, the page would be in Spanish, again with no provision for a language change. In either case, going to Support/Soporte > Forums/Foros would take the newcomer to http://forums.adobe.com/index.jspa , fully in English, and then the story would then continue as described in my previous message. As an ignorant in such matters, I cannot help thinking if it is really so terribly difficult to make the forums.adobe.com software to somehow “remember” where the user is coming from and act accordingly. Explicitly: that if the user clicked on the “Foros” menu in the Adobe Spain site, s/he is taken to the index in Spanish. Naturally, with similar solutions for other languages.
I thank you for explaining the user interface/content difference. It is a valid and powerful argument against translating everything; and I certainly wouldn’t expect messages written in other languages to be translated to Spanish. However, there are some things that in my opinion are important enough to deserve the extra effort of specially translating and manually inserting. I am thinking, for example, of the different Announcements (text included) and the titles of the Stickies, plus perhaps some of the FAQs. No doubt, it would be easy to find natives willing to provide the required translations for Adobe personnel to replace in the proper places. I would do it gladly in the case of Spanish, and Pierre would probably be willing to provide the required French versions.
I agree in that the solution that you adopted for the language change problem is probably the best within the existing constrains, although I still think it wasn’t working as today when I performed my previous tests. However, I would like to ask you to consider what I said above about the transition from the Adobe Spain (or whatever) to the Forums index page. (In this paragraph, I have used the plural form of “you”, for which you don’t have in English a separate word as we have in Spanish).
Finally, I want to stress again that grouping all Adobe products (including all the ex Macromedia ones) in just one single forum, as in the Spanish case, makes the use of that forum far from easy. If you couple that with a far from perfect search engine, you end up with a nearly unusable site. This hasn’t happened yet in the forum in Spanish because the number of posters is very low. I hope that this number will grow in spite of the difficulties, but then the problem will become increasingly noticeable.
    Claudio.
