ADSL Broadband Settings for Netgear DG834GT (no In...

A few weeks ago my DG834GT had been working with BT ADSL (not Infinity) for a year before it died, so I bought another GT with the latest firmware, but I can't get Internet access.
I am currently using a HomeHub 2.0 which works fine, so I know my line is OK.
I reset to factory settings and everything works on the GT except Internet: wireless works, ethernet, admin panel etc.
With the DSL cable plugged in, no DSL/Internet light is illuminated, only the power, wireless and ethernet number. The router status page of the admin panel always shows "Connecting", with no IP and 0kbps Downstream and 0 Upstream. Obviously no web pages work either (can't connect to server message).
The ADSL settings that I've tried:
Multiplexing: VC-BASED
VPC/VCI: 0/38
Network Type: PPPoA
Login: [email protected]
Password: BT
I signed in to the HomeHub admin panel to see what settings it uses, which is PPPoA with 0/38. The email address is [email protected] and the password shows as ********
Have also tried various email addresses and passwords:
- [email protected]
- my own personal @btinternet email and password
- my name as in [email protected] and @btinternet.com
- password left blank
- password 0 (suggested by post on the forum)
Also tried PPPoE instead of PPPoA with the same various login details.
Also tried LLC-BASED instead of VC-BASED.
Also tried going through the wizard, which says it can't find the connection.
If anyone has a GT, or any Netgear router, could you please post your ADSL settings? Any other assistance would be appreciated too. My GT is Sky branded but I have flashed the firmware so it's now the same as an unlocked non-Sky one.
Thanks

Perhaps the firmware image was for the wrong ADSL chip set, as its the front end hardware that is failing.
Remember that firmware also has a large part in defining the parameters of the physical hardware inside. Also, are you sure the router was working on Sky beforehand, especially as you bought it from someone else?
Its possible that it was damaged in some way?
I assume you have tried a different ADSL line cable, perhaps the one from your other Netgear?

  • ADSL Broadband With Time capsule

Hello could someone please help me?
I currently have ASDL Broadband using a netgear modem router that i want to remove and use the Time capsule, can this be done by pluging the phone line in or do i need to get a modem for the time capsule?
    cheers steve

You can use either an Ethernet ADSL Modem or a combined ADSL Modem/Router.
The best option is an Ethernet modem such as the X-Modem or similar as the Time Capsule is already a router and it works well with things like iChat AV without any extra configuration.
Alternatively you could use virtually any ADSL Router and configure the Time Capsule as a bridge. The downside to this sort of set-up is rather than using the TC as a router you are having to use the ADSL router to do things like sharing and hand out DHCP addresses. This means you may have to make additional configuration settings on the router such as port forwarding or modifying firewall rules for things like iChat AV to work.
Either way will get you on-line with the TC.

  • Flashing Orange Broadband light for days at a time...

    Hi Guys,
Been having a problem with broadband connection for past couple of months.Seems to be fine for a few days and then orange light starts flashing on hub.Usually turns blue again within a couple of hours but sometimes is out for several days.I have a very long 9km phoneline and the speed is only 0.5Mb at best but it has been consistent for 4 years.I'm worried that maybe the line has deteriorated a little more and thats the reason for the drop outs. The hub is currently connected in the test socket with all upstairs phone extensions disconnected.I've have 2 hubs and have tried both with different filters and get the same problem so i think it must be a line issue.Any help and advice would be appreciated.
Currently writing this via a mobile broadband connection because the hub as been out for 2 days.

The issue for me isn't the speed although it is snail speed by todays standards. The range of speeds i usually get is between 0.25 and 0.5 Mbps,it's always faster in cooler weather in the winter and seems to slow during periods of hot weather.Maybe the line expands a little when it's warmer,i'm not sure. The 288Kbps is normal for my connection.I've noticed that sometimes just before the connection drops, the downstream noise margin drops to around 1db which then drops out the connection.
It's been connected for around 4 hours now and stats seem pretty stable.

  • At the end of my tether with ADSL broadband! Advic...

I have been experiencing problems with my ADSL broadband for a year. I am less than 1km from my BT exchange. I currently use an independent ISP (Zen) and my own modem (Billion BiPAC 7800N).
Symptom 1: Intermittent audible noise on voice line which is accompanied by ADSL modem randomly losing sync. The noise on the voice line sounds like crackling or someone rustling cellophane, or sometimes squeaking. If I turn off the modem or unplug it from the microfilter, the noise on the voice line generally gets quieter or stops.
Symptom 2. Intermittent modem sync loss a few seconds after picking up or putting down phone receiver.
I have tried everything I can think of: brand new modem, turning router off/on, new microfilters (x3), plugging permanently into test socket, ditched Siemens cordless phone and using BT branded corded, changed ISP, disconnecting all other household appliances when the probelm occurs. I have only the master socket, no extensions.
BT have sent engineers on 3 occasions, but the problem never occurs when they are here. They have replaced the master socket, and wiring inside my house terminating in a new black sausage connector at my fascia board. They have fiddled around on the telephone pole across the street, and in the green cabinet down the road. They have put meters on the line. But they say the line is absolutely fine. They are quite happy to close the ticket every time, even though I have not agreed the problem is resolved. Sometimes the problem recurs within hours of the engineer leaving. Yet sometimes the problem goes away for days or weeks, but has always returned.
Can anyone give any advice on getting this resolved? It is driving me, almost quite literally, insane.
I am just about to throw in the towel, cancel the BT line rental and the ISP contract, and try switching to cable, which I feel now I should have done a long time ago. BT just do not seem willing to put the effort in to get to the bottom of this problem. It would seem like common sense to agree to send an engineer out on a day when the problem is occuring, but this seems completely out of the question to such a sophisticated company.
    Thanks
    Rob

you can't seriously expect and engineer on standby to drive to your home immediately you phone
I am not for one moment suggesting I have a personal engineer on standby as you seem to be implying.
BT is a very large company with very many customers, and a measurable number of these have intermittent problems. Apart from myself, I have personally met quite a few in this category, and there seem to be a fair number voicing their problems on this forum.
It does not seem unreasonable to me for BT to adopt a different business process to such problems than currently. A proportion of the engineers could be in teams that respond specifically to intermitent faults and customers with such faults could expect, after a number of failed visits, to get hold of one on the day the problems are occurring. The current approach, whereby an engineer turns up many days after a customer has gone through a day of hell, with inaudible voice line and non-existent broadband, only to shrug, say no fault found, and close the ticket, is quite lamentable. It is deeply frustrating and insulting to customers in equal measure. Still, I suppose it keeps the senior management happy by minimizing outstanding fault numbers, so keeping performance bonuses intact, etc. However, it does nothing for elevating the status of BT in the eyes of customers.

    Hi
This is on behalf of my mum.
She had BT total broadband and telephone line installed on the 22/3/2011 she moved from virginmedia and took her number with her.
The broadband worked for half a day and has not worked since.
The Internet light is constantly flashing orange and purple and never connects.
For the first 4 days when calling bt she was advised there was a problem in the area each time she rang for northern england, northern ireland and scotland.
However a problem this big where no one in those areas could connect would make the news!!
My mum has asked several neighbours and friends if their bt broadband is not working and theirs are working fine.
She has now also called bt broadband support for the last 2 days and has been promised callbacks which do not arrive and also when calling back herself is advised she will get a callback in 24 hours which never happens.....
I live approx 200 miles away and have tried to diagnose the best I can and have ascertained there seems to be an ADSL connection but it doesnt then connect
Am I right in thinking that a homehub (3) authenticates via telephone number to connect to the internet?
If that is so then is it possible that the bt line was installed with a temporary number and then the virginmedia number was ported in and then the broadband stopped authenticating if the temp number was the allowed number and hasnt been updated?
Any help would be greatly appreciated and she has tried all the usual reset, take the front of the bt linebox, changed the filter etc etc but nothing works and bt are providing her with no customer support whatsoever.
    many thanks

  • IChat AV 3.0.1 Set-Up For Netgear RP614 v2 router

I have been having constant intermittent problems with iChatAV 3.0.1 (OS 10.4.2) on my PB G4. The error I get is "Insufficient Bandwith" when I try to connect with a PC (using Trillian Pro) or MAC (using iChatAV). I have the cable modem plugged into the Netgear. I then plug a PC, X-Box, Laser printer and an Airport Extreme (configured as a remote repeater) into the Netgear. I use the Airport Extreme wirelessly with my PB G4 17" and an Airport Express in my stereo for iTunes. The Netgear was configured to have all blocking turned off, manually set IP addresses for all computers and X-Box. And the UPnP enabled along with the maximum open port settings for iChatAV (TCP & UDP @ 1024-65535) for use with AOL/Trillian programs. If anyone has the Netgear RP614 v2 router working perfectly with the iChatAV 3.0.1, please post the settings ASAP. I talked with Apple service yesterday and they illuted that they have a problem with the bandwith errors. They said they are working on it !

    HI John,
From this page http://portforward.com/english/routers/port_forwarding/Netgear/RP614/default.htm I can see that you must have a newer firmware then the pics show as UPnP is not on there.
Static Addreses do seem to do better in some cases.
The PC applications should be able to use UPnP but I am not sure about the X-Box.
You should not need to port forward all ports and do UPnP at the same time. I would turn off the Port Forwarding you have and use it only for the X-Box, if needed, on the ports it needs.
The error mesages and Connection Doctor details are not as good in iChat 3 as they were in iChat 2 (and those took some working out).

  • HELP! send but cant receive on new broadband connection via netgear router?

I have posted a recent question as I cant receive mail but I can send it both through outlook express on classic9 and mail. I have recently got tiscali broadband and a netgear router, I have a pc and emac connected through the router which can accommodate 10 computers. I have re-set the passwords and user ID/names so I think they all match (unless I have something hidden somewhere). I did not have any trouble on my NTL dial up connection with either mail or outlook. I noticed from one of the top guys on the forums he suggested-Go to Apple Menu > System Preferences > Network, choose Network Port Configurations from the Show popup menu, and make sure that the configuration used to connect to Internet appears at the top of the list......I would like to know if this means built-in-ethernet or tiscali, as I have it set on automatic....is this right or wrong?? Also there was something said about a router having a firewall, which I can access on the PC but have never seen it on the emac or set it up I dont think (maybe unknowingly), where would I find it if the emacs cable goes to the router. Tiscali do not support Apple Macs by the way, so they are more than reluctant to get involved either by e-mail or on the phone. I can access my mail if I go to the tiscali web site because I can connect to the internet with intenet explorer no problem. I really just want to find the problem so as I can receive my mail in either outlook or mail....please help.

    > I would like to know if this
    means built-in-ethernet or tiscali,

    wrong??
I don’t understand the question. If you choose
    Network Port Configurations from the
Show popup menu in System Preferences >
Network, there is no such thing as an “automatic”
setting there, only the list of available port
    configurations (network interfaces)...
*In network preferences the 'network' box displays with 'Location'- which in mine there is a choice of 5 options, the chosen one is Automatic....is this correct?
where would I find it if the emacs cable goes to
    the router
I don’t understand this either. You can see where the
cable goes by looking at it. What do you mean?
*Yes I can see the cable, but is there an Icon floating around that I have not found which will give me the status of said router.?
Actually, what’s the problem exactly? Is it that Mail
doesn’t check for mail on this account, or that it
checks but retrieves nothing, or what?
*Yes it checks for mail, the spinning wheel goes round in the right hand corner then it displays a box:::: 'Enter password for Account G&L....The POP server "pop.tiscali.co.uk" rejected the password for user G&L....Please re-enter password or cancel, save as keychain
What type of mail account is this (POP, IMAP, .Mac)?
*Mail type is PoP & Smtp
Could it be that Mail or this particular account is
in an “offline” state? Is the Mailbox > Go
    Online command enabled or disabled?
*I can send Mail without a problem, so I dont think this particular mailbox is offline, but If it is applicable I will check it anyway.
Go to Preferences > Accounts > Advanced. Is
Include when automatically checking for new
    mail ON or OFF?
    *Again I will check this.
What’s the time interval chosen in Preferences >
General > Check for New Mail?
*I will check and let you know but I think it is all password box related for some reason as my password has not changed at all.
Open Window > Activity Viewer and tell Mail to
check for mail on this account. What do you see there?
*The Activity veiwer has a red octabon in the top right hand corner and a blue&white barbers pole in motion and the text says fetching new mail and sending password, then I get the box asking for password as its been rejected.
*I have configured as DHCP in the TCP/IP menu
There is no PPPoE connection box ticked ...is this wrong?
    built in Ethernet configures Automatically.
I hope you can help me as its driving me NUTS!!
    Thanks in hope.

  • DNS Settings for Westell 9100EM Router

I have continuously been experiencing issues with Verizon's preset DNS setting when using DHCP, and therefore plan to use a different set of DNS servers (I hear that 4.2.2.1 - 4.2.2.5 are recommended in the DC area where I live).
I wonder, however, where to change the DNS setting in the router.  The 9100EM has primary and secondary DNS settings both for the LAN (i.e. the internal network) (under My Network - Network Connections - Network (Home/Office)) and for the external WAN network (under My Network - Network Connections - Broadband Connection (Ethernet)).
Are the settings for both networks supposed to be identical, or can I use different settings for the LAN and for the WAN.
Any recommendations which DNS servers I should choose for either network connection?
    Thanks a lot

    ralf18 wrote:
I tried to set the LAN DNS at 192.168.1.1 but receive an error message ("DNS Server cannot have the IP address of Wireless Broadband Router Network").  The same happens when I set the DNS to the external IP address of the router.
If you are trying to do that in the router's UI, no kidding.
If you are trying to do that on a computer behind the router, perhaps the router does not act as a DNS Server relay.

  • Netgear DG834GT with TC

    Hi,
I'm waiting for my new MacBook to be delivered and in the meantime I have been thinking about my internet setup.
At the moment I have my Mac Mini connected directly to my ISPs Netgear DG834GT router as this will obviously give me a faster connection than using the Mini wireless. As I will be getting a MacBook I won't have it connected directly to my router so in theory I'm going to experience much slower internet connection as the router is only WiFi 'g' rated.
Now, would I benefit from getting myself a TC and connecting it to the router and then using the TC as a wireless access point for my MacBook as both are WiFi 'n' rated?
I will be using the MacBook in the same room as the router/TC 99% of the time.
    All advice gratefully received.
    Kind regards,
    Mark.

    Hmm...
Maybe it's just my Mac Mini then as I have done that test in the past as when I first got my Mac Mini I was connecting wirelessly which was OK, but once I switched to having the Mini connected directly to the router via ethernet my internet and download speeds were a lot faster.
I think my worry is that my previous experience using my Mini wirelessly and my internet connection being 'slow', I'm just concerned that I'll have the same issues when I get my new MacBook. I wasn't sure if perhaps it was to do with it only being 'g' certified and the Mini also.
My speed connected on my Mini just now was around 11 Mb/s and wirelessly it was around the same... weird! It was definitely slower wirelessly in the past! My mistake!
On that note then, will having the TC utilising the 'n' grade provide me with any benefits?

Back after a brief absence, things look a little bit different.
I'm trying to take a 16 minute mini dv video and compress it for use on the web. I'm interested in any suggestions you may have on settings for the video and audio tracks. I've tried using Sorenson 3 (15 frames, key frames set to automatic, 320 x 240) for video and IMA 4:1 (mono) for audio. The resulting video looked great but the file size came in at about 255 Mb.

Thank you for the replies.  Everyone was correct about the jack, interface, and phasing problems.  I have been unplugging my motu audio interface and then using headphones at work.  I have not changed any detailed audio output settings in logic.  When I read that the jack might be a problem I tried switching headphones.  This actually helped.  I am using dre-beats headphones and they seem to be having issues with the mac/jack-(the phasing/panning problems.  I can use these headphones with other devices but not the mac.  I have to use ipod ear buds and the phasing seems fixed.  Hopefully this information is helpful to someone else.
If anyone knows how to correct this issue please let me know its difficult to know what my final mixes are going to sound like and I have had to keep bouncing everything into i-tunes- sync to ipod and then listen in my car radio.

  • ITunes looses photo sync settings for Apple TV (1st gen.)

Since the update to the new Photo app on my Mac, iTunes forgets the photo sync settings for my Apple TV (1st. generation, 160 GB HDD).
Every time I open the photo section of the Apple TV sync settings, all the options are turned off. Then I mark a couple of albums and sync the Apple TV >> all album appear on the Apple TV.
But after closing and re-opening iTunes in the photo settings everything is unmarked again. So on every following sync the photos on the Apple TV are easily erased :-( Resync them to the Apple TV takes hours (>30'000 photos!).
All the other sync settings in iTunes remain intact.
    Environment:
    - MacBook Pro Retina 15" with the latest SW (Mac OS, iTunes, Photo App, etc.)
    - Apple TV 1st gen 160 GB HDD

Restarting iTunes resolves the issue in the majority of cases, if it doesn't my second guess would be your security software.
What really seems strange here is that there have been no updates since well before Xmas, so after initially setting it up, the first update would have brought you right up to the most recent (and indeed the very last) .
Agh, how silly of me, I see it's iTunes you have updated.
If that's about all you've changed, you might want to try reinstalling iTunes and bonjour.
